Arguably the most hyped artist of the year returns with another single destined to raise eyebrows and soar straight to the top of the charts. Gaga has quickly become the definitive “love her or hate her” kind of artist with her headline grabbing antics revolving around fame, sex and individuality, both in the media and professionally. Although, it is her artistic credibility which gives the 23 year old New Yorker the edge over the critics. On ‘Paparazzi’, Gaga tells an honest story of obsession, effectively using ‘paparazzi’ as a metaphor as she sings such haunting lyrics as “i’ll follow you until you love me” over dark underground dance beats and clacks. In the break, Gaga unfortunately manages to sound a little too similar to Gwen Stefani both vocally and lyrically, and loses points in an otherwise great Pop record. The extravagant film-clip for the track has gained ongoing media interest since it’s debut last week, but it’s not fair to credit it for the success of the song as a single. Instead, I would suggest the video’s take on the link between Paparazzi and fame is simply a pricey and overdone production that is ultimately less effective than what Britney Spears achieved in the clip for ‘Everytime’. That being said, Gaga knows what she is doing, and should deservingly expect continued success on this one.

Mentioning massed aerobics in my post yesterday reminded me of an awesome film clip by Faithless for “I want more”. I have since found out that it is footage from a documentary called A State of Mind, which according to the website is a “film following two young [North Korean] gymnasts and their families for over eight months in the lead up to the Mass Games – involving a cast of thousands in a choreographed socialist realism spectacular – the biggest and most elaborate human performance on earth.”

Anyway, watch this clip. Good tune, and mind-blowing footage. Who needs to feed a nation when you can put on something like this?

Mein kleiner schwarzer Fernseher hat mir in den letzten Jahren gute Dienste geleistet. Doch jede schöne Zeit geht einmal zu Ende und darum haben sich an diesem Wochenende auch die Wege von dem kleinen schwarzen Kasten und mir getrennt. Aber ein echter Showstar wie “Mr. Grundig” weiß, wie er seinen Abschied von der Bildfläche noch zu einem großen Auftritt werden lässt.

Was einst gut war ist heute mitunter schlecht: Das gilt nicht nur für Eier und Tomaten, sondern auch für manch ein Zelluloid-Machwerk – leider. Denn oft gefiel ja das junge Gemüse, doch ein Fehltritt reichte bei einigen Schauspielern aus, um zur Trash-Ikone abgestempelt zu werden. Aber zum Glück gibt es zu jeder Zeit Freunde des “guten” schlechten Geschmacks. Und die lassen ihre “Helden” auf ewig hochleben – egal wie tief sie gesunken sind. Großartig trashig ist beispielsweise dieser Filmclip mit John Travola und Jamie Lee Curtis:
