Incredibly sad to find out today that the really rather lovely Filmstar magazine has gone under, along with its sister magazine Death Ray. I suspected something was wrong when my third consecutive trip to WH Smiths came up empty so did a quick Google search and came across the following online statement from Matt Bielby, the launch editor:

“As some of you may have heard, and others who popped along the shops to pick up the latest issue of Filmstar may have feared, Blackfish’s two magazines, Filmstar and Death Ray, are currently ‘on hold’. What this means is that there will not be another issue of either of them along for a number of weeks – or, likely, months. Indeed, whether there will ever be another issue of either is a moot point, and at this moment in time impossible to answer. But we hope so.

Quite what the future holds for Filmstar, Death Ray – and, indeed, Blackfish – remains unclear, but we hope to have more definite news over the next week or so. Keep watching this space, because as of now quite literally anything (or nothing) could happen.”

Whilst I know it’s hardly the greatest of times to launch a brand new magazine, I can’t help but be utterly depressed that something with a bit of spark and ingenuity to it (such as the brilliant back pages devoted to bonus facts that couldn’t be fit into the main articles themselves) couldn’t make it to six months on the shelves whilst the ever-drearier Empire gets more and more inane. I found it by chance in ASDA at Shipley and was delighted that I had a replacement movie magazine at last.

As I frothed back in August: “Filmstar arrived at just the perfect time to tempt me away from my long standing subscription to Empire magazine, which I’ve read fairly religiously (that is to say with stigmata sat on top of a giant pole for 40 years) since 1996 but began to really bore me in the past few years with its endless dribbling about bloody Blu Ray and forced not especially irreverent irreverence.

I’ve no doubt it’ll go wrong. It always does but if you consider yourself a fan of cinema and fancy a change from re-appropriated press releases and willy waving explosions on why the latest bit of new technology is the best bit of new technology since the last bit of new technology, then you cant go wrong”

And so it joins Neon, Smash Hits, Cult TV, The Box, Amiga Power, Comedy Review, Look-In, Hotdog, Select, Deluxe, Raw, Sky, Deadpan, Vox, Jack, X-Ray, Bang and countless other one word title magazines I’ve wasted my money on over the past fifteen years in periodical heaven.

But we’ll always have Paris….well, the ASDA at Shipley anyway. After all, tomorrow is another day…

Death Ray and Filmstar magazines have closed, as Blackfish Publishing splits from their parent company Rebellion. According to a press release issued by managing director Matt Bielby, the current issues of both magazines (Death Ray issue 21, and Filmstar issue 5) will be their last.

I liked Blackfish’s magazines, and I wrote for Filmstar: even among strong competition, I felt that Filmstar was an impressive title, and it’s more than self-interest that makes me sad to see it go. The editors I worked with were great, and I’m proud of the pieces I wrote for them (I’ll be adding all my film reviews to the Paperhouse archive over the next few weeks).  There are plenty of reasons why a publishing venture might not work out, but for Blackfish, it definitely wasn’t a failure of quality. Filmstar and Death Ray to close

I’ve got some sad news, I’m afraid. Blackfish Publishing is currently in the process of splitting from its parent company, the video game developer and publisher Rebellion, which means that the current issues of Filmstar and Death Ray magazines will, at the very least, be the last for some time.

Filmstar will not continue in its present form beyond issue #5, now on sale, or Death Ray beyond issue #21, also on sale. This is, needless to say, a terrible shame, because both are terrific magazines, with a loyal and growing following, and plenty of potential. However, harsh economic circumstances and assorted unforeseen factors make it impossible for us to continue with them at this time.

I am hopeful that one or both magazines will find homes elsewhere, and that Blackfish itself will continue in some form. It’s a terrific little company, full of dedicated, passionate and talented individuals, and I would like to thank them all for their almost universally excellent work over the last few years: Guy, Jes, Lee, Adam, Joe, Allie and others on Death Ray; Mark, Thom, Keith, Steve, Dave and others on Filmstar; plus Meg, two Ians and, of course, Karl. In addition, I’d like to thank the raft of excellent and insightful writers and other contributors who’ve worked with us over the past three years.

Thank you for your interest in, and support of, our two magazines: they were great while they lasted, and will, with luck, rise again.

The powerful, emotive and available lyrics of Suede’s “Filmstar” there, the 276th single to come from the ten track “Coming Up” album of 1996, which many will remember as the compulsory ‘getting ready to go out’ record of the time – as much of a necessity to a good night as eyeliner, lipgloss and Last Chance Lottery on Channel 4. (Indeed, rumour has it on the “internet” that if you play both the Suede album and the March 22nd, 1997 edition of Last Chance Lottery in sync then absolutely nothing of interest happens.)

Filmstar also happens to be the title of a new movie magazine from Blackfish Publishing, founded by magazine legend Matt Bielby who obsessive magazine purchasers of the last two decades might remember from C&VG, Total Film, SFX and most importantly, the tremendous Amiga Power. Those who don’t recognise the name have probably seen something he’s had his mitts on in print form. And equally for the remaining few who can’t read, his name is an anagram of Baby Elm Tit.

Filmstar is the company’s second title after sci-fi magazine Death Ray arrived to try and steal the SFX crown in May 2007 and whilst that didn’t really interest me, Filmstar arrived at just the perfect time to tempt me away from my long standing subscription to Empire magazine, which I’ve read fairly religiously (that is to say with stigmata sat on top of a giant pole for 40 years) since 1996 but began to really bore me in the past few years with its endless dribbling about bloody Blu Ray and forced not especially irreverent irreverence.

Likewise, Total Film also did nothing to keep the interest up despite me buying it for its first two years – I liked the humour and feature ideas but found the writing a bit bland and lifeless. Other magazines came and went – I still have issue one of Flicks, which Im not sure ever made it to a second one – before Neon politely crept onto the market in late 1996 and managed to mix humour, great writing and great ideas (The Smash Hits style poster mid-section was exceptionally appreciated by myself in particular), plus some incredibly striking covers.

Sadly, the wheels came off and Neon was outlived by its free 1999 calendar by ten months as the axe fell, much like it had on similar “quirky” launches of the same era such as Comedy Review, The Box and Cult TV. Although the fact  they were rubbish didn’t help much either.

Thus it gives me great pleasure to say that the spirit of Neon is very much with Filmstar which so far has been enormously entertaining thanks to its attempts to mesh mainstream and arthouse cinema under one umbrella. Particular credit should be given to Five Easy Pieces, a segment in which individual writers share their interests in specific aspects of film and the back pages in which acres of additional facts and material to many of the main articles is provided.

I’ve no doubt it’ll go wrong. It always does but if you consider yourself a fan of cinema and fancy a change from re-appropriated press releases and willy waving explosions on why the latest bit of new technology is the best bit of new technology since the last bit of new technology, then you cant go wrong with giving Suede’s “Coming Up” a try. Um…I mean Filmstar magazine.

“Claims have been made that I’ve been on a strict workout routine regulated by co-stars, whipped into shape by trainers I’ve never met, eating sprouted grains I can’t pronounce and ultimately losing 14 pounds off my 5′3″ frame,” she writes. “Losing 14 pounds out of necessity in order to live a healthier life is a huge victory.” She continues, “I’m a petite person to begin with, so the idea of my losing this amount of weight is utter lunacy. Sexy and a daredevil – Oh Hugh!!!

We all know that Hugh Jackman is the sexiest man ever and he  proved he as much a daredevil as the characters he plays as he made a spectacular stunt entrance from a helicopter.   The Australian star then swept to the ground on a zipwire and was mobbed by fans as he launched a world promotional tour of his new film.

He stars in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which focuses on the beginnings of Hugh’s clawed superhero, taken from the iconic Marvel comics out on April 29th 2009 in cinemas in England.

He landed on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour, Australia, one of the key locations for the shooting of the movie.

But his grand stunt was marred after a work print of the film was leaked online – oh naughty people!   ‘It’s a serious crime and there’s no doubt it’s very disappointing – I was heartbroken by it,’ Hugh said.   ‘Obviously people are seeing an unfinished film. It’s like a Ferrari without a paint job.’

Hugh, 40, faced further trials several days ago after he wrote on his Twitter page: ‘Having lunch on the harbor across from the Opera Center. Loving life!’   His fellow countrymen were outraged he had called it the Opera Center instead of Opera House, and had used American spellings of harbour and centre.   A spokesman told the Australian newspaper the Sydney Morning Herald it had been caused by a spelling error on his Blackberry. But hours later, Jackman told the paper he had dictated the message over the phone to a staff member.  So which is true?

‘I communicated it over the phone and when that got translated by someone American in my office it came out all wrong..   ‘I do know the Opera House is called the Opera House – I think I had my high school leaving assembly at the Opera House when I was 18 so I should know that one.’   And shortly afterwards, a new tweet appeared on his Twitter page: ‘Jumped from chopper, arrived to work via flying fox and apologised [sic] to AUS media for Opera House slip up….”

But more than 600 fans were undeterred by the calamity and turned up to watch him arrive and see a sneak 20 minutes of the completed footage.

Kate has not had it easy during her teenage years she battled anorexia and weighed in at just 5 stone, it apparently has taken a long time for her to feel comfortable with her self and now she does.

Kate, who stars in the upcoming film Nothing But the Truth, says she now has a much healthier view of her body, which she once described as ‘a twig with a bum and small breasts’.  She went on to say ‘I’m entirely normal. I have my good days and my bad days. I am a lot more body confident now I’m in my thirties, and am in better shape, too.  Being confident and feeling good about our bodies is so very important regardless of size and shape it is the fact of loving ourselves, after all we are all beautiful.  I think she looks hot!

15:55: Under de senaste veckorna har det mesta gått i racerfart här igen, så nu gäller det faktiskt att planera lite så inget krockar framöver.

Så till oktober månad som bokstaveligen kommer att bli en actionfylld månad, jag skall nämligen gå en grundläggande stuntman-kurs under alla helger i oktober, där vi bl a kommer lära oss om fallteknik, filmslagsmål (fight teknik/kamervinkling), drama, vapen, special FX (explosioner, squibs..skotthål, glas etc.), rapelling och säkerhet. Vi kommer även få chansen att medverka i slagfältscener i kommande filmer.. yeah, why not!

Återkommer såklart med bilder etc efter varje helg om jag får lov att fota lite där… Efter kursen får vi även en häftig action-CD på våra prestationer som såklart inte skall ligga och damma på hyllan, men visas här i bloggen.. Möjligheten för att specialisera sig på vissa stunt finns ju också, får vänta och se vad jag duger till.. kommer iallafall bli riktigt kul och spännande!. So stay tuned peop’s!

På fredag skall jag till Stockholm och agera som statist i en TV-serie. Jag har gjort liknande förut och hade det mycket trevlig bland de andra som var med. Och så får man ju också några extra kronor i fickan på köpet.. så helt klart något jag vill fortsätta med!

För några dagar sedan ringde också en tjej från en tidning som tillsammans med en fotograf skall komma hem till mig på torsdag och intervjua mig i samband med mitt lilla företag.. riktigt skönt att de är intresserad av oss som är egenföretagare och som arbetar hemifrån, inte alltid så lätt som många verkar tro det är .. vill ju såklart återkomma med mer om detta senare. Skall också ge blod denna dagen, så jag får nog ta det lite lugnt i svängarna…

När det gäller styrketräningen så har jag med flit haft nestan 3 veckor helt ledig från allt efter tävlingen i Karlstad, återhämtning heter det ja.. men kände såklart att det efterhand började klia i både kropp och vilja.. så i går bar det iväg till gymmet igen för ett lagom benpass, och även promenaderna har så småningom börjat bli sköna och mer verkningsfulla igen.

Hur det kommer bli med tävling på Fitnessfestivalen vet jag inte än, just nu känner jag bara att jag är trött på allt det här med bästaste träningsrutinen, protein/kolhydrats-analyser, och dietnojor.. ibland känner man att det pratas/skrivs om det samma om och om igen överallt ..bläh…..ha..ha..  dags för lite paus från just det. Känner för liiite mer action och använda kroppen på et litet annorlunda sätt nu! Och det får jag ju snart

Dock har jag redan beställd tygprover från Glitzit till ny dräkt, så jag får helt enkelt se hur kropp och form känns i november. Blir det inte Fitnessfestivalen i år så blir det ju att bygga lite och tidigast tävla till nesta års FF ..I guess ..

Vill gärna ha en dietfri sommar för en gångs skull… att bara köra Beach 2009 kommer ju bli rena rama lyxen ju ..hi..hi, och så behöver jag nog lägga på mig lite mer muskelmassa här och där samt bara få njuta av själva träningen och vettig mat en stund.

Skall såklart forsöka uppdatera bloggen lite oftare igen… men i perioder har man ju mycket annat som också skall och vill göras eller hur? Har självklart hunnit baka lite också de senaste veckorna, så flera goa recept är på G!  SeeYouSoon!

It is a sad commentary to the direction of this  former teen star Mackenzie Phillips’ life that at the ripe age of 48 she has been charged with felony possession of drugs after she was allegedly found carrying narcotics at Los Angeles International Airport.

 Phillips has allegedly been charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, heroin and cocaine. She also faces a misdemeanor count of unauthorized possession of a needle or syringe.

   It is my hope that she seeks the help she needs to kick this habit which has haunted her since her teenage years and was the reason she was kicked off of the popular show “One day at a time”.

     Phillips is the daughter of the founder of the group The Mamas and the Papas pop group.

   Girl you’d better get some help before that habit kills you before your time.
