Intro

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is an action role-playing game developed by Square Enix for the PlayStation Portable. The game is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII and is also the sixth installment in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.

Presentation

Where to start… we all know that all Final Fantasy games have spectacular graphics.. so the question is, how are the graphics on a handheld console? Well the cutscenes are absolutely stunning, no surprise there, you’ll be taken away everytime a cutscene appears.

As for the in-game graphics, their obviously a little knocked down from the movie cutscenes, but are just as amazing. They look smooth, crisp and suit the game just perfectly for a PSP.

Gameplay

Well to begin with the gameplay has changed from the usual Final Fantasy fighting gameplay. Instead of the, wait your turn to attack, then it’s your chance to attack style of gameplay that we all come to love. Which is a great change to the previous games. The controls are a bit technical at first, taking some time to get used to but once you get into it the game controls will just come naturally. The controls really give this game a real depth to the fighting style of this Final Fantasy game.

Verdict

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core is a great game, with fantastic visuals and amazing cutscenes for a handheld console. The gameplay also is a great take on what a PSP can do. The different style of fighting hasn’t down-founded anything about this title.

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core is a defiant for your collection and at such a great price you’ll be missing out on a classic game for your PSP.

After hearing “the Price of Freedom” a couple times I decided it was about time I finally gave the full soundtrack a listen through. Before hearing it my initial thoughts still echoed after listening to the soundtrack and reading the plot: are we really still doing this? At ground value, it’s about time they stopped “milking” the Final Fantasy VII cow to death… no really. Uematsu left square already because he didn’t like square’s new facilities, but I wouldn’t hold it against him if he resented the reskinning as much as any intelligent gamer (not that he has a choice since he doesn’t have rights to any FF music).

Now before I get any further I just want to state that I’ll get my ranting out first because I believe that although Crisis Core is one too many, fresh composer Takeharu Ishimoto deserves a fair chance to be considered despite square’s decisions.

Final Fantasy VII – Crisis Core

Since Crisis Core is an installment of FFVII, there are at least 5 remixes of songs from the game, and most of them are pretty tasteless. One BIG problem I have with the entire soundtrack is that it is flavorless on many of the songs. One of the qualities that I’ve noticed becoming bigger and bigger is the use of guitar. You can hear it prominently in Advent Children and Uematsu’s formation of The Black Mages, but it runs into dangerous territory, particularly on this album. Too many times a track comes on that is just a plain heavy guitar/metal song that has no theme, or a really basic one, and if any other instrument besides drums could penetrate the distortion I can’t say I hear it much. A good example is: “Controlling the Iron Beast”

This song has a boring repetitive intro and even the transition gets dull. I like the addition of the guitar over the top at 1:10, but it quickly disappears.

Now there are situations where the distorted guitar is put to good use with drums and backing guitar etc, and that is on “Wandering on a Sunny Afternoon”.

This song has a catchy melody that is not buried under too much noise and it breathes too. I mark it as one of the better original melodies on the album.

It seems that the most catchy original melodies are usually placed under the title “Theme of CRISIS CORE —”. One track like “Wandering on a Sunny Afternoon” is “Theme of CRISIS CORE “Under the Apple Tree”"

This song has the light blend of guitar and drums, but it throws in a second guitar with a more indie pop tones and some strong synth for good measure. This song has happy pop melody to it, but at the back of it is the feeling of gravity and fate that seems to hang heavy with the game’s storyline. I would easily place it as one of the best off the soundtrack.

Another “Theme from CRISIS CORE–” That I found to be exceptional was “Theme from CRISIS CORE “Truth Behind the Project”.

This song has an intense mash up of violin and piano. It makes a very tense and drama filled background and it doesn’t sound like a rehashing of any previous tracks. On the same lines, but much shorter is the track, “Theme from CRISIS CORE “To a New Post”"

Well I lied earlier, there is one arrangement of FFVII music that I find to be excellent. It is “A Flower Blooming in the Slums(from FVII “Aerith’s Theme”)”
The track doesn’t do much to the original except adding guitar and reducing the piano lines so that they both make a nice light atmosphere.

Another original standout track that uses Piano and Violins is “Melody of Resolution” The beginning of the track is scattered and has a dark feel to it, but as the song progress it becomes more anthemic and strengthening.

Another instrument introduction into the FF series that I like is Drums. They have been present in past games of course (ie. Gau’s theme in FF VI) but they haven’t been in the forefront of the music very often. Crisis core features a large amount of drum tracks, and “Night of Seclusion” is easily one of the best.

One of the tracks “A Moment of Courtesy” which seems like a throwaway track is actually a short, fantastic arrangement of “The Price of Freedom” with only strings and counterpoint.

And, of course, since I’ve already mentioned a few times I’ll put up “The Price of Freedom”.

This track is easily one of the top tracks from the album. It has an awesome melody made from two guitars (later 3) and it features great drums and transitions from acoustic to electric guitar. Oh, and of course strings!

Finally, the ending theme must come. There is a small transitional track that closes the soundtrack, but it’s definitely not the staff roll so I won’t mention it any further. The real closer to this game is called “Fulfilled Desire” and it is an arrangement of Final Fantasy VII music by Kazuhiko Toyama.

This track is simply great. It features many songs from FFVII blended together and reorchestrated. I can honestly say that this track is what I expected Crisis Core to be more like. Still, I don’t think less of this soundtrack because it gave Ishimoto a chance to show the world what he can do, and he also introduced new music into the FF series – which is something it definately needs – and I’d say he did it with aplomb.

I decided to write this post after my sister played the ending over and over again for about 3 times

I decided to write this post after my sister played the ending over and over again for about 3 times, showing the CGI cut scene which Zack dies. Then I thought, must all the good bishies with a heart of gold die so early yet so heroically? I swear, after Cloud screamed and the song began, Zack turned around and ‘captured’ my heart. It leaped! I couldn’t believe that it was possible to fall for a computer-generated character so easily!

Never mind, I shall now show you the ending of the game, after you fight the final battle as Zack. This video also includes an extra spoiler on the remake of the original Playstation game, Final Fantasy VII. Details about this being a true remake is not known, but fans are keeping their hopes high with the awesome cut scene graphics!

Then there’s the ending song, Why by Ayaka. The 2nd video enclosed includes the song in the background and english tanslated lyrics, so don’t hesitate to click on it and know the meaning of the japanese song. After I watched it, I kept thinking that this song was as if Zack or Aerith is singing to Cloud. The meanings all fit, especially those who know the full storyline of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) will understand what I mean. So touching, it jerked a tear from me, which is very rare to happen indeed.

For those seeking the song, below is the song download and player on aimini. It’s faster than imeem and with the same clarity, plus endless replay. Enjoy!

I GOT A PSP!!!

So yesterday, I was looking in Wal-Mart, looking at a PSP through the glass panels when my mom walked up. I told her that I was thinking about buying a PSP. I was nothing short of amazed when she asked me if that was what I wanted for my birthday. I thought I was getting a wall scroll and a T-Shirt. I’m still getting the shirt. And I’m buying the wall scroll. Needless to say, I was nothing short of completely and utterly dumbfounded.

Before I go on, you need to understand – I already have a huge array of electronics at my disposal. I have a Nintendo DS Lite, an 80GB iPod, a PlayStation3, a Nintendo Wii [and a GameCube], several computers, a Super Nintendo Entertainment System [SNES], and a huge TV to put it all on. So I could easily and truthfully say I’m technologically dependant enough already, ne?

Yay! *adds to plethora of electronic hardware*

I also got Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. So far, I’m saying that the game is interesting. At times, the game is laughably easy, and the bad guys are anything but convincing – Genesis’ character model is none other than Camui Gackt. In the Japanese version, he also does the voiceover. [Does it say something that I'm willing to buy the Japanese version just to hear the voice coupled with Genesis?] He’s done a lot of work with Final Fantasy in the past, though, so I’m not terribly surprised. But I am happy.

Anyway, the storyline so far is pretty cliche as far as Final Fantasy goes: Good guy has mentor/enemy, mentor/enemy leaves, good guy goes after mentor/enemy, life goes on. I am, however, pleased to announce that the game is insanely fun to play. *nods* I haven’t really set the PSP down unless I’ve had to [for a church function last night, I put it down for about three, four hours. And then I played it until 4 in the morning. Life is good.].

Well.

That’s about it.

Any suggestions for games I should buy next? I’m thinking about buying ‘Need for Speed: Carbon – Rule the Streets’, or ‘Midnight Club DUB Edition’.

When you think of casual games, the first thing that comes to your mind is not Final Fantasy. In fac

When you think of casual games, the first thing that comes to your mind is not Final Fantasy. In fact, usually you’re nowhere near the RPG genre when you’re thinking about casual play. You might consider a shooter or a puzzle game long before you even consider the remote possibility of a casual RPG, and then when you actually stop to contemplate it for a moment, you stop, laugh, and say “Nah, that won’t happen.”

But how little informed we all are!

As a matter of fact, there’s been a few attempts at casual role-playing games in the past. One of the most noteworthy is a PC game by WildTangent (makers of Lumines and Runescape) called Fate. They declare it an “Enthusiast”game (same category as Runescape, an MMO) on their website, but in truth it’s much more a casual game in spirit than a hardcore one. You can play Fate for ten minutes or ten hours, and the result is pretty much still the same experience. And it’s just as addictive as Peggle, so you might end up working it for hours on end and somehow get no sense of accomplishment but all the sense of enjoyment.

There’s been other experiments in the casual/hardcore mix market for RPGs recently in even AAA titles–at least, what I perceive to be triple A. Not only triple A, but the very game we’d never expect to be a casual game. Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (which I have to say I enjoy immensely) is very much a traditional RPG in the sense that it has a long, spanning story mode that has cutscenes and choices and menus and running around collecting lumber to build flower wagons. But Square Enix and the Kingdom Hearts team therein that was responsible for this amalgam of a game decided to put casual elements into gameplay and allow short, playable bursts of fun for two to five minutes at a time like any good portable game should, and I applaud any PSP title for achieving this standard instead of being a ported PS2 title. This effect is achieved through Missions, a mysterious menu option never before seen in any Final Fantasy game.

It works beautifully–you choose a mission from the Missions menu, complete it, and usually you’ll get another mission to do until you run out of them and need to seek out more through the regular story mode. Missions consist of running around a map and seeking a particular enemy while fighting baddies of differing skill levels (depending on the mission) and picking up treasure chests along the way. You can only access Missions while at a save point, making the transition between missions and saving seamless, quick and effective. It takes about two minutes to run one, and they’re addictive, despite their repetitiveness. There’s just something about Crisis Core’s seamless battlesystem that makes those two minutes gloriously fun. It might be the fact that in running them, you level up and acquire enhanced items and materia that beef your character and you can use through regular story mode, making yourself vastly more powerful and advantaged. Even so, the game is still challenging, and you have Hard Mode to run through after you complete it once.

Using these kinds of elements in gameplay, Square Enix has toed in on a very different market in a very different way. Remaking Final Fantasy IV for the DS is lovely, I’ll admit, but the truth is that Final Fantasy was never meant to be a portable game. It’s always been a sit-your-ass-down-and-play-that-thing-for-hours game. Seeing a Final Fantasy that has mixes of both gameplay styles makes me content, especially since I’ve noticed from watching the industry that developers think hardcore games are waning. Both elements in a big title like Final Fantasy show that there’s rooms for both styles in the industry, and there’s no reason developers should stop trusting that the epics will sell to the mainstream audience.

In that light, give both games a try. Fate is a fairly low-hardware-specs game and Crisis Core needs only a PSP to work. They’re good fun and I’ve enjoyed both in their own right. When casual games are disguised as RPGs, some interesting things are probably on the horizon. What will Final Fantasy XIII bring? We can only guess.

Of War:Chains Of Olympus.
E voi che ne pensate? Preferite Zack o Kratos?
