I’ve recently been given the opportunity to really test out a Mac and compare it to my Windows 7 PC and here are a few things I found.

My First Impression:
Wow this is hideous. I’m not one to really care about how an operating system looks as long as it works well, however, over the past few years, I’ve become more and more comfortable with my Windows Vista/Windows 7 look. The transparent windows and stunning Visual effects have really gained on me over time.

Features:

The Dock/Superbar

In past versions of Windows, Mac has certainly one-upped Windows with the Dock,however with the “Superbar” in Windows 7 (which may have been an idea stolen from Mac) Microsoft now has a chance in this race. It wasn’t long ago when I left my Facebook up in an Apple store and was quite surprised to see my status when I got home. I feel that I may have left it up because that window looked like nothing more than another icon on the dock. I imagine that this is something that Mac-users get use to, however, I MUCH prefer the Windows 7 method of organizing open windows and icons. If a window on the taskbar is open, it has a luminescent box around it. If a window is open on a Mac’s dock, it looks just like every other icon.

Finder/Indexing

One of my favorite things in Windows Vista/7 has been the incorporation of indexing into the start menu. This was another thing that was claimed to be stolen from Mac, however, I feel that that is a total lie. I have always been amazed with the search results found in the Windows start menu (like typing scarlet and finding every picture of my mom), however, I was overwhelmed with the search results I found in the search function in the top right corner of a Mac. It started out telling me a definition of the word for which I searched, then split all of the files into different categories by file types (which is also done in Windows). The only real thing that makes Mac’s finder better, is the definition, however, that is one thing that isn’t found in Windows, and small improvements like that really add up.

Dashboard Widgets/ Desktop Gadgets

Another thing claimed to be stolen from Mac (you may here me referring to that a lot in this article) is the incorporation of gadgets in windows. Gadgets are found on the desktop on Windows, and Widgets are found in the Dashboard on Mac. I find that it is much more convenient to have these tools on the desktop so that you can just minimize a window and get to them all. Plus, it’s really convenient to be able to use a window and a gadget hand-in-hand, which can’t be done in a Mac because you have to open the Dashboard, not just drag a winow beside the gadget like you can in Windows. Plus, a recent improvement in Windows 7 allows you to view all of your gadgets without even going to the desktop or opening something new. You do this by just hovering your mouse above the lower left-hand corner of the screen, which allows you to peek at all of your gadgets, which I find really useful, because I have an RSS, Twitter, and Facebook gadget on my desktop, and would like to see if anything catches my interest without minimizing any window. There are, however, less gadgets to choose from and download in Windows Vista/7 than there are in Mac.

One thing that I would never be able to get use to is the lack of third-party application support. I have so many third-party programs on my computer that if I removed them all, it would probably clean up about half of my hard drive. This is one thing that Apple will neverbe able to measure up on. I also would like to be able to replace a piece of hardware with whatever I want. Not necessarily something made by Apple.

As for Viruses, I pretty much have no comment. If there were NEAR as many mac-users as PC users, there would probably be more people to generate viruses (though I don’t have an eye to see into alternate realities). Also, I don’t get viruses, and I use a PC. Microsoft Security Essentials has really come through for me, and it is made by the “dreaded” Microsoft.

I use a Dell Studio 1555 with 4 gb of RAM, 2.1 gHz processor, a high definition graphics card, and 320gb of hard drive space. I’m fairly certain that my PC will run just as fast as any Mac out there once it starts up. If I decide I want to go out and spend a few thousand dollars on a PC, it will more than likely startup just as fast, if not faster, than a Mac, and it will probably zoom through everyday tasks.

As for features, Mac and PC are just about tied in the race, however, one thing that will always keep me on a PC is the simplicity of EVERYTHING. Mac has nice hand gesture capabilities, however with the help of third-party software, I have the same gestures on my computer. Aero features (snap, shake, peak, and flip 3-d) are now a necessity for my daily computing. I now use them on a daily basis. Any feature that is on a Mac, can be added in about 10 minutes by downloading on a PC. You can’t say the same for a Mac because of the poor third-party software support.

I’m a little behind on this one, as I’ve been away in Europe for the last couple of weeks, where my Bell Canada CDMA BlackBerry 8330 does not work.  But here we go…

I installed Urbanspoon for BlackBerry earlier this week, and have been playing with it for a few days now.  I must admit that I have been anxiously anticipating this release ever since the first time I saw this app on a friends iPhone a few years ago.

So far, I have been pleasantly surprised with the application.  Prior to this release for BlackBerry, I have been using Poynt and OpenTable’s BlackBerry apps to search for restaurants.  Both of these apps are location-based search apps, but have their limitations.

The OpenTable app is well designed and works well, but had a couple of glaring limitations that were quite frustrating.  First, there was no way to read restaurants reviews in the application.  Therefore, it would find restaurants in my area, but other than a short description of the restaurant, offered no additional information.  Secondly, the app is limited to restaurants that sign on to the OpenTable reservation program.  So a great app, but quite limited.

Poynt is a great location-based search tool, but searches directories (i.e. YellowPages) and therefore, provides restaurant names, contact information, address, and directions, but does not provide any additional information, such as reviews or descriptions.  So while Poynt is one of my favourite and most used BlackBerry apps, it is not entirely suited to finding restaurants.

Enter Urbanspoon.  I like that it has the ability to search based on proximity, type of cuisine and price range.  The randomization (spin) feature is nice, but is purely aesthetic.  I do, however, really like that it offers ratings (% of people who like it) and reviews for each restaurant.  Additionally, the app integrates really well with BlackBerry Maps to provide navigation and/or step-by-step directions.

However, the app leaves room for a couple of improvements.  First, each time I open the app, the sound is turned on, even if my phone profile is set to quiet or vibrate.  Easily turned off, but easy to forget.  Second, the reviews open in the browser instead of in the app itself.  While still functional, would be nice to see this functionality built into the app itself.  And lastly, the app opens with a background image of a cup of french fries.  Not exactly the haute cuisine I am searching for.  If I want fries, I can always find the Golden Arches.

Overall, a great app, and it is great to see that it has finally been added to the BlackBerry lineup.  The app is available in the BlackBerry App World or from the Urbanspoon directly.

Das batteriebetriebene Plastikheinzelmännchen besitzt zwei Grundfunktionen: Wird die Fernbedienung in Reichweite ausgelöst, dann gibt das Teil Laut. Außerdem weisen sechs LED-Leuchten den direkten Weg zum Gepäck. Zweitens lässt sich eine maximal 30 Sekunden lange Sprachnachricht auf dem Teil speichern. Damit könnte man trocken “Dieser Koffer gehört der Mafia. Legen Sie ihn und sich auf den Boden und sprechen ein letztes Gebet” oder weniger einfühlsame Beschimpfungen oder auch nen flotten Spruch wie “Ich bin ein Koffer und werde entführt” oder auch “Danke, dass Sie mich aktiviert haben. Ich werde nun von 100 herunterzählen und dann explodieren. Einen schönen Tag noch” draufsprechen. Naja, falls der Luggage Locator überhaupt die Bombenspürtrupps am Flughafen und die rüden Umladeaktionen überlebt hat. Der Versuch kostet pro Stück 15 Dollar. Plus Batterien.

Para poder cambiar el color del fondo de la ventana (blanco por defecto), hemos de hacer click derecho en cualquier lugar de ella, “Mostrar opciones de visualización” y, abajo donde pone Fondo, podemos seleccionar “Color” o “Imagen” para cambiarlo.

Los servicios son una característica antigua de OS X pero que ha estado muy fuera del foco de atención durante muchos años. Snow Leopard les devuelve la importancia que alguna vez tuvieron y además les enseña algunos trucos nuevos. En esta entrega de la columna de Automator, haremos un servicio muy simple para automatizar el comprimir un elemento del Finder y enviar este archivo por correo.

Desde antes que OS X fuera OS X (por ejemplo, leer el final del siguiente artículo), existen los servicios. ¿Y qué son? Básicamente, son una manera de permitir que una aplicación distinta a la usada en el momento procese los datos seleccionados. Hasta ahí muy bien, salvo por dos detalles que los hacían poco prácticos: estaban perdidos dentro del menú de la aplicación y siempre aparecían todos, lo que generaba un gran desorden en el menú. Además, era casi imposible cambiar los atajos de teclado, por ejemplo. Tampoco había alguna manera de organizarlos mejor.

Y la verdad es que eso era una lástima, pues en general son de bastante utilidad. Por ejemplo, yo usaba una aplicación, LaTeXiT, que me permitía convertir ecuaciones en texto en una aplicación en un pdf con una calidad impecable gracias a LaTeX, y era más fácil de usar gracias a que la aplicación instalaba un servicio. O también seleccionar una URL en un texto, cuando no está marcada como hipervínculo, etc. Pero si bien son de utilidad, se mantenían escondidos de la vista de un modo muy efectivo, pues no mucha gente los usaba.

Sin embargo, desde Snow Leopard, esa situación cambió en dos maneras sustanciales. La primera es que ahora sólo aparecen los servicios que tengan relación con el tipo de dato que reciben. Por ejemplo, si la selección actual es un trozo de texto, sólo aparecen los servicios que acepten texto como entrada y lo mismo con imágenes, audio, y distintos tipos de entrada (otra cosa es que yo sea medio fanático de los servicios, como muestra la imagen).

La segunda es que ya no hay que ir a algún menú rebuscado para encontrar los servicios pues ¡ahora están en todas partes! Por ejemplo, en cualquier menú contextual.

O también en el botón de acción de las ventanas del Finder.

Pero la guinda de la torta es que es posible crear servicios y añadirlos al sistema. ¿Cómo? Usando Automator, por supuesto.

Lo primero es elegir, una vez abierta la aplicación, la plantilla para servicios.

Como vemos en la siguiente imagen, nos dice el tipo de entrada que recibirá el servicio y desde qué aplicación la recibirá. Un servicio puede aceptar entrada desde todas las aplicaciones o desde una en particular.

Las alternativas para el tipo de entrada son varias.

En este caso, elegiremos “archivos o carpetas” del Finder.

En esta ocasión, nuestro flujo será de la siguiente forma: lo primero que haremos será el archivo comprimido, luego crearemos un mensaje de correo con este archivo como adjunto y finalmente enviaremos el mensaje usando mail.

Para esto, usemos la acción Crear archivo comprimido del Finder.

Luego, usaremos la acción Nuevo mensaje de correo. En este caso, para hacer más general nuestro flujo, haciendo clic en el botón Opciones le diremos que nos muestre esta acción al ejecutarla. Con eso, podremos escribir la dirección a la que enviaremos el correo, el asunto, mensaje, etc. Al conectarse con la acción anterior, que entrega un archivo, nuestro mensaje contiene éste como un adjunto.

Finalmente, usamos la acción Enviar mensajes salientes. Esta acción enviará los mensajes recibidos de la acción anterior (si no recibiera ninguno enviaría los de la bandeja de salida de Mail).

Guardamos nuestro servicio con un nombre apropiado. Por ejemplo, ya que sólo recibirá ítems del Finder, le pondremos un nombre ad hoc.

Y listo, sólo queda probarla. Seleccionamos un archivo y con el menú contextual, elegimos nuestro servicio desde la lista.

Luego aparece la ventana del mensaje de correo.

¡Y listo! Enviado.

Otro elemento en pro de los servicios en Snow Leopard es que existe una sección dedicada a ellos en las preferencias del teclado. Concretamente, esta sección permite entre otras cosas impedir que se muestre un servicio en un menú (de forma de reducir el desorden, además, siempre hay servicios que no se usan pero las aplicaciones instalan), asignar un atajo de teclado o desinstalar un servicio.

Je suis du genre très compulsif avec Apple. J’ai donc acheté Snow Leopard dès sa sortie, en août dernier.

Puis installé dès réception sur mon PowerBook Pro 2,4 Intel Core 2 Duo, mais l’installation a planté en route.

J’ai retenté… Même résultat. Comme je n’avais plus un  seul OS sur le Mac, j’ai du réinstaller Leopard 10.5 depuis le DVD, puis remettre à niveau tous les logiciels…

Puis j’ai planqué Snow Leopard dans un placard fermé à triple tours.

Deux mois plus tard, alors que j’avais un peu de temps entre deux gros dossiers, j’ai fait une sauvegarde Time Machine de mon disque interne. Je l’ai ensuite effacé avant d’installer Snow Léo (Snow Léo c’est son pt’it nom) et j’ai tous remis comme avant avec Time Machine.

Je ne vous dis pas que c’est la seule solution, ça a juste été la mienne. Je vous dis pas que j’ai tout pardonné à Apple. Mais depuis, je suis content, ça marche. Et lisez attentivement toute la suite pour entrevoir toute la puissance de cette bête, si difficile à dompter au départ, qu’est Snow Léopard.

Avant toute chose, il faut que votre machine possède un processeur Intel car Snow Léo est très snob et ne daignera pas s’intéresser à un Mac doté d’un cœur Motorola. Ensuite il faut 1 Go Ram et 5 Go d’espace disque mais ça…

Quoi de neuf dans le 10.6

La grande nouveauté de Snow Léo, ce sont les améliorations portées à d’anciennes applications, comme QuickTime, Safari ou Mail  pour les préparer aux nouvelles machines tournant sous 64 bits au lieu de 32 bits. Bon, pour moi ça ne change rien, mais comme je compte bien m’acheter un gros MacPro sous peu…

En tout cas, une chose est sûre : même avec un MacBookPro à 32 bits,  avec Snow Léo,  mon Mac s’éteint et démarre plus vite. Genre presque moitié plus vite.

Pourquoi 64 bits ?

La plupart des ordinateurs du marché tournent un échantillonnage 32 bits. Ces ordinateurs ne peuvent utiliser que 4 Go de mémoire vive au maximum en même temps. Il ne sert donc à rien d’avoir plus de 4 Go de RAM sur son ordi, sauf à se dire que si une barrette est naze, une autre peut pendre le relais…

Mais avec un ordinateur tournant  sous 64 bits  comme les derniers Power Mac, cela devient super intéressant d’avoir 12 Go de Ram, et de lancer des calculs à la fois dans Final, Motion, Color… et de voir tout cela se faire en un clin d’œil ou presque ! Sous 64 bits, la limite de Ram utilisable est presque infinie. En tout cas loin de la limite maximale qu’on peut mettre en RAM sur un  Power Mac aujourd’hui.

Dans Snow Léo, de nombreuses applications ont été récrites pour le 64 bits (Safari, Mail, iChat et surtout le Finder), Snow Leopard est donc une application « future ready »

Langues et texte

Votre adresse ou votre mail en raccourci clavier

Dans les « préférences système », allez sur  « Langue et texte »

Dans l’onglet « Texte », on peut faire des substitutions pour placer des symboles ou  caractères spéciaux que l’on utilise souvent sans avoir à appeler la fenêtre « caractère spéciaux ».

Certains sont proposés par défaut, comme le © de copyright.  Il suffit de taper  -c- et cela donne ©. Tout cela marche dans Simple Text ou Pages mais certains de ces raccourcis ne marchent pas dans de vieilles versions de Word.

Pour ajouter un raccourci personnalisé, tapez + en bas de l’onglet « texte » et par exemple « tel » pour lui sustituer un dessin de téléphone. Allez chercher le dessin du téléphone dans « visualisateur de caractère » ( barre du haut sous le drapeau du clavier) et insérer le dessin voulu dans la colonne du droite à côté de « tel ».

Petite précision : dans Mail, il faut activer cette fonction en allant dans : Editions/substitutions/Remplacement de texte

Pour voir des caractères cachés sur le clavier, faire “afficher visualiseur de clavier » dans la barre du haut à droite, sur le drapeau du clavier, puis alt et Maj pour trouver les caractères peu usuels comme ø, , @, æ, Œ, ¿ etc…

Personnellement,  j’ai programmé un raccourci avec tout ce que je mets en bas de mes mails (nom, fonction, adresse, tel, mail etc) en un raccourci : RD (mes initiales).

Imprimantes

Au lieu de charger tous les pilotes d’imprimantes du marché comme le faisant l’ancien Mac OS, Snow Léo ne charge que les pilotes de l’imprimante utilisée, allez dans Imprimantes et Fax, tapez sur + et l’ordinateur va très vite proposer l’imprimante que vous utilisez, validez alors  la proposition et ça y est, le pilote est installé et ses mises à jour vous seront proposées comme celles des logiciels Mac dans « mises à jour de logiciel ».

Poubelle.

Avant, on pouvait déjà récupérer un document dans la poubelle tant que celle-ci n’avait pas été vidée. On peut toujours mais la nouveauté, c’est qu’en faisant clic-droit sur le doc dans la poubelle et en choisissant « remettre » on peut replacer directepent le doc à l’endroit où il était. Sympa.

Attention au Bug Mpeg Streamclip

Lorsqu’on installe Snow Leo, la mise à jour oublie le module QuickTime Mpeg2 qui est fourni avec Final Cut et qui permet à l’excellent couteau suisse qu’est Mpeg Streamclip de lire des vidéos en Mpeg 2 et de les rendre compatibles avec FCP. Résultat, lorsqu’on essaie de passer une vidéo en Mpeg2 dans Mpeg Streamclip, ce dernier nous demande d’installer le fameux module Mpeg 2… Bug !

Pour récupérer le module perdu, allez dans Time Machine et récupérez-le dans : System/Bibliothèque/QuickTime/ Module Mpeg2/ .Ensuite, faites “restaurer” pour qu’il se réinstalle au bon endroit. Si vous n’avez pas de sauvegarde par Time Machine, allez récupérer le fichier sur un autre ordinateur qui n’a pas été mis a jour sous Snow Leo.

Autre conseil : si vous l’utilisez, mettez également à jour Cyberduck car la version antérieure ne fonctionne plus sous Snow Léo….

Safari

Nouveauté très intéressante, on peut visualiser une mosaïque des fenêtres récemment ouvertes dans Safari en cliquant sur la grille à côté de l’icône livre, en haut à droite de Safari. En tapant en bas à gauche sur « modifier » puis en cliquant sur l’icône « punaise», les fenêtre de sites que vous utilisez souvent arrivent. Vous pouvez alors personnaliser la mosaïque et pourrez donc accéder rapidement et simplement à l’ensemble du top 20 de vos sites.

Autre truc : pour zoomer dans une page Safari, faites Pomme+ (ou Pomme-Maj-+ si vous n’avez pas de clavier numérique).

QuickTime X

Première amélioration, les touches de commandes QuickTime s’affichent dans la video si la souris est dans la video, et disparaissent dès que la sourris n’est plus dans la vidéo.

Lorsqu’il est apparent, le contrôleur QT peut être placé n’importe où dans la video. Il suffit de cliquer dessus et de le déplacer.

Un autre nouveau bouton du contrôleur permet de passer en mode de projection plein écran. En fait, ce sont les possibilités qu’offraient QuickTime Pro qui sont maintenant incluses dans QuickTime 10.

Quick Time 10 perùet aussi d’enregistrer des sons ou des vidéos sur son mac, que ce soit des images de la webcam ou bien l’enregistrement de l’écran .

Exemple, pour vous enregistrer sur la webcam intégrée : dans QuickTime, choisissez “nouvel enregistrement video” ou Alt-pomme-N.

En cliquant sur le petit triangle dans le contrôleur, vous pouvez choisir la caméra si vous en avez plusieurs, ou encore le micro, la qualité d’image, le dossier de destination de l’enregistrement…

On peut aussi enregistrer l’écran, faire de la prise d’écran dynamique pour réaliser des tutoriaux par exemple….

Après avoir enregistrer un bout de viidéo, il est possible de faire des coupes à l’intérieur. Edition/élaguer ou PommeT, puis bouger les curseur de début et de fin de clip sur les positions voulues, puis taper « élaguer».

QuickTime 10  peut aussi faire bien mieux : partager les clips sur Mobile Me, You Tube ou  Itunes via le nouveau bouton écran et flèche du contrôleur QT. Si je choisis iTunes, on me propose plusieurs qualités et tailles : iPhone  ou iPod, Apple TV ou Ordinateur, les trois tailles du fichier étant indiquées.

Autre option au menu de QT10 : fichier/enregistrer pour le web, proposé dans les trois formats possibles d’un seul coup.

Pour ceux qui utilisaient QT7 avec toutes les fonctions Pro de QT7, sachez que si vous ne retrouvez pas l’ensemble de ces fonctions dans QTX, la version antérieure de QuickTime n’a pas été effacée mais déplacée dans Application/Utilitaires, je vous invite donc à faire un alias de cette version de QT7 dans votre dock pour accéder rapidement à QT7 si vous en avez besoin. QT7 est aussi sur le disque d’installation Snow, mais dans la partie ‘Installation’ en option. Vous pouvez le choisir en repartant du DVD Snow Léo pour le réinstallez si vous ne l’avez pas.

Aperçu

Aperçu  est l’application par défaut pourvoir des pdf ou des images sur mac OSX. Avec Snow il est désormais possible de sélectionner un texte sur plusieurs colonnes dans un pdf et de le copier puis de le coller. La version précédente de Leopard ne reconnaissait pas les colonnes et il fallait copier-coller colonne par colonne.

Avec Aperçu sous Leopard, on peut annoter un pdf en faisant Outil/ Annotation… On peut aussi sous quelle forme mettre son annotation, dans un cercle, rectangle etc.

On peut scaner un doculent sur un scanner à distance, sur un réseau Wifi par exemple depuis Aperçu. Aperçu/fichier/Importer depuis un scanner (inclure les appareils en réseau) et scanner directement après avoir valider la taille etc…

Mail

Mail s’ouvre 4 fois plus vite qu’avant. Normalement…

Mail utilise de plus en plus de metadonnées. Exemple, si vous avez une adresse en bas d’un mail, vous pouvez en faisant clic-droit dessus accéder à des options, exemple : créer un nouveau contact, sur une adresse vous pouvez accéder à la carte Google Map  etc.

Sur une date, vous pouvez créer un nouvel événement iCal.

Avec Snow, il est aussi possible d’avoir des infos sur un vol aérien à partir du numéro du vol et savoir par exemple en temps réel où en est le vol. Bon il faut avoir un numéro de vol standard avec deux lettres au début ex AF 4578…

You’re in an Open dialog and you’ve selected something in the list—but is that the item you really want? You’d rather move to the Finder and peruse the folder the item’s in. It’s in a deeply nested folder, though, and you’ll have to do some digging. Or not: with an item selected, press Command-R (mnemonic: “Reveal”) and you’re moved to the Finder with the item’s folder opened.

QuickOffice (vedi articolo) è una suite office per iPhone. Ma come trasferire i file dal mac all’iPhone? Per fare ciò basterà visualizzare il vostro iPhone come un dispositivo di rete.

• Aprire una finestra nel Finder
• Digitare Cmd+K (oppure nel menù Vai/Network)
• Viene visualizzata la finestra per l’aggiunta di un nuovo dispositivo di rete
• Aprire QuickOffice sull’iPhone
• Entrare nel menù reti del programma (icone centrale in basso)
• Abilitare il trasferimento dei file
• Digitare nella finestra del Mac l’indirizzo IP dell’iPhone che viene visualizzato
• Premere OK

Nella barra a sinistra del Finder vi apparirà la nuova voce del vostro iPhone e cliccandoci sopra potrete vedere la cartella madre dove QuickOffice legge. Basterà quindi trascinarvi i file o copiarli sul Mac per passare dati tra i due dispositivi. Il tutto diventa un semplice drag and drop.
