Today is Jennifer’s 12th birthday and it’s the first one I’ve not been there for her. I spoke to her on the phone and promised to bring her a present when I get home, but its not the same and I felt really depressed today. Sorry sweetheart, I really am!

Chris took me along to his record company, London records, so that the bands press officer, Eugene Manzi, could put together a press release about ‘The Tube’. It was a novel experience for me and I was surprised they could get a photo off tv to use with it. Best of all, I was allowed to help myself to as many records as I could carry. I got a pile of old Rolling Stones stuff, and some records I thought the girls might like, The Fine Young Cannibals and others. I think Chris was a bit embarrassed as we left with me struggling to carry my booty. It was excellent!

This afternoon a London comrade took me to a DHSS office in Harrow and the workers there have agreed to support the soup kitchen, which is brilliant.

Norman Willis, the new fat bastard in charge of the TUC, spoke at a miners rally in Wales and had the bloody nerve to condemn picket line violence! What planet are these people on? The miners responded by booing loudly until some enterprising lads lowered a noose in front of him. They should’ve lynched the fat bastard! I thought Len Murray was a disgrace but this bugger makes him seem militant.

The NCB have offered a £650 Christmas bonus to anyone who scabs before November ends. Bastards!

Well, Dave, no surprises here. After careful review of the entirety of the lyrics, it does indeed seem to be about a guy with a wandering eye. To think that all these years, while identifying and savoring the simple beauty of specific lines (for example, “rings but none on that finger” and “words like conviction can turn into a sentence”) that capture concrete sentiments, I had never once put everything together into this narrative of frustrated infidelity. It figures, though. Along with Pete Shelley, I think the Roger and Wakeling team have always had a knack for combining swell melodies with polished yet unassuming words that unearth rich emotional truths (e.g. “I’m in love again. This time’s true I’m sure.“). And somehow, I was always under the impression that Tenderness was just a variation on the theme of the self-deprecating and timorous romantic so aptly described in Too Nice to Talk To.

While, earlier in the day, I may have disagreed with you about whether or not Tenderness (from 1984) is the greatest single in history — I would have offered up this or that as evidence to the contrary — I think the fact that it has been stuck in my mind since it first came out clearly persuades me to align with your opinion. And that is without even mentioning the hard and fast English Beat rule: Everything anybody from the English Beat was ever involved in is flawless.

Although… what’s with Dave Wakeling touring as the English Beat these days?

As for your concern about the lyrics from Tenderness on your Facebook profile, I think there’s a good argument for great lyrics to be taken on their own without having to assume their context… Just to prove the point, I have now revised my Facebook profile to include lyrics from The English Beat’s “auto-erotic” song Hit It:

And, frankly, I don’t find it embarrassing at all.

Speaking of embarrassing, what’s up with Andy Capp becoming a beer snob all of a sudden?!?

Released: June 1985

UK chart position: #5

From the album: Fine Young Cannibals

That guy from the Fine Young Cannibals: he was black, but he still looked like a young Stewart Lee. What’s all that about then?

One thing that’s becoming increasingly apparently as we go through these articles is that a lot of Mondeo Pop acts were second or third bites at the chart cherry, which ties into earlier notions about Mondeo Pop being about growing up and rejecting the childlike energy of your youth/youth band. Genre overlords The Beautiful South and Crowded House were borne out of The Housemartins and Split Enz respectively, The Style Council came from The Jam, we’ve already written about The Korgis’ routes in Stackridge (and, accordingly, being flooded by the latter’s street team), and The Fine Young Cannibals had, of course, two members of The (English) Beat.

Actually, I didn’t know that either. All I know about The English Beat is that a) every song I know by them is pretty amazing and b) my knife-wielding bipolar ex-girlfriend used to get really aggrevated by me calling them The English Beat rather than The Beat. But more fool her, because look where my insistence on US-specific band names has gotten me: I now have two American readers for this blog who are slowly getting more and more alienated with a month of articles on bands that sound like a more polite Gin Blossoms.

Anyway… The Fine Young Cannibals do seem to be the great overlooked band of the past 25 years of British chart history: five top ten singles (when that was still an achievement); a number one album (the same number of #1 albums as Oleta Adams and Paramore); a “Best Band” at the Brit Awards which they promptly responded because of… I have no idea, something to do with Margaret Thatcher… I think she was in charge of Radio 1 playlist policy at the time? Hence “Bust A Move” by Young MC stalling at #71.

The point I’m trying to make whilst being distracted with these cheap zingers is that FYC were a pretty big band for a while: they had a hold over the charts that has translated into absolutely no currency in the music industry since. Nobody’s listing them as an influence, you’re not turning the radio on and going “Oh fuck, not another faux-Fine Young Cannibals act”, nobody’s gonna get that excited if you jump up and kick “She Drives Me Crazy” at karaoke. The sole marker they’ve left behind is a strangehold on Mondeo Pop radio play that exists to this day. Playlist planners struggling to fill up a “no repeat workday” can still rely on “Johnny Come Home” or “Suspicious Minds” to fill up four minutes. And, really, what else would any self-respecting band want to leave behind other than that?

Taigi,

Belaukiant traukinio teko klausytis tokio lengvo pop-rokelio. Grojo kelis coverius, pamenu tik Fine Young Cannibals “She drives me crazy”.
Fine Young Cannibals isn’t a one-hit wonder, but a one-album wonder. Several songs off their 1988 album The Raw and the Cooked charted, including #1 positions for today’s song and the jaunty ‘Good Thing.’ The album also featured such gems as ‘Don’t Look Back,’ ‘Ever Fallen in Love,’ ‘I’m Not the Man I Used to Be’ and ‘As Hard As It Is.’

The Raw and the Cooked is one of those albums that I haven’t played in probably close to a decade but I’d never consider selling back. Every time I think about it, under one of those belt- and shelf-tightening spells I have once in awhile, I peruse the track list and think ‘No way am I giving this up!’

But I still don’t listen to it.

I’m not sure why that is. Too many CDs and too little time, I guess. I’m going to make an effort to get this into my CD case the next time I’m swapping out discs. I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.

I can’t stop the way I feel
Things you do don’t seem real

Tell me what you’ve got in mind
‘Cause we’re runnin’ out of time
Won’t you ever set me free
This waiting round is killing me

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can’t help myself

I can’t get any rest
People say I’m obsessed
Everything you say is lies
But to me there’s no surprise
What I had for you was true
Things go wrong, they always do

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can’t help myself

I won’t make it on my own
No one likes to be alone

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can’t help myself

Uh huh huh

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can’t help myself

Uh huh huh

She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
I can’t help myself

Fine Young Cannibals é um grupo musical britânico melhor conhecido pelos sucessos de 1989 “She Drives Me Crazy” e “Good Thing”, do álbum The Raw and the Cooked.
All the Fine Young Cannibals.

Si quieres descargar “She Drives Me Crazy” de Fine Young Cannibals, pincha aqui. (Nota)

Songs that are terrible, yet make me feel terribly nostalgic for my youth
I never hide the fact that some of the music that I love is Terrible. Not little t-terrible, but BIG T-terrible. Like Lorelai Gilmore’s hidden Barry Manilow CD (“He was very big when I was very small,”) here are the top 5 songs of my childhood that I’m too in love with to be ashamed.

(**The videos weren’t a factor in the choice of songs, but if you need a laugh you should watch them. The fashion alone is PRICELESS.)

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers- “Free Fallin’”

This is the song I’m least embarrassed about. Sure, it’s cheesy, and the lyrics may be a little nonsensical, but it’s also sweet. (And totally better than the John Mayer cover. PLEASE!)

Bonnie Tyler- “Total Eclipse of the Heart”

I don’t remember hearing this song until I saw it used in the film Urban Legend, but what a winner!!! (*er… awesomely bad winner.) This song is an epic. The buildup throughout the verses! I’m a big fan of Tyler’s psychotic vocal delivery towards the end of the song; there’s some mental instability peeking through, and I LIKE IT. You know that you want to throw up your arms and belt this song, don’t lie!

Fine Young Cannibals- “She Drives Me Crazy”

My dad used to tell me that this song made him think of me.

I guess I wasn’t old enough to realize that I should’ve been offended by that.
The vocals are ridiculous. Bring on the effects.

Del Amitri- “Roll to Me”

This is such an infectious pop song. I feel like it’s full of lines that young girls wish guys would say, but that guys think are lame and wouldn’t ever admit to thinking, let alone saying.

*A fan vid, because Universal Music Group loves disabling embedding.

Mr. Big – “To Be With You”

I need an outside source to tell me what ‘s NOT to love about this song. Okay, that’s not true- I’m not blind, and I know that the band’s hair alone would instantly throw away any credibility. But looks aside, you can’t deny that there’s something magical going on here; maybe it’s the men harmonizing, the awesome tambourine playing, or the cheesy and sometimes gross but secretly endearing lyrics.
Seventeen years after its release, I’m STILL waiting for a guy to sing this to me. And then I’d puke, because it’s probably only good in theory.

The album was originally released in 1985 where it peaked at number 11 in Great Britain and number 49 in the United States. The Fine Young Cannibals were part of what I call the second British Invasion that occurred during the 1980’s.

The 80s for me was university then work, with some broken love in between. Like, ‘broken English’, I mean. Sincerely wanting to connect, but too much vocabulary gone missing in the action. If you know what I mean…

She drives me crazy still, even as ’she’ has changed bodies and faces and voices. While the 80s were hard, hard as a boss wanting ‘results’. Money as everything, and bling before it was “bling”. And the Trump already braying. No place for any dreamer, with even the green leaf turned crystalline white. “‘Just say no’,” holding out the rolled-up twenty. Hypocrisy, like “political correctness”, gone rampant. So must become a kind of collective uprooting madness.

What the 80s were like: a lot like the 00s just ending. When everyone forgot “Neutron Jack” had set a river on fire, put him on the cover of all the magazines instead. And more wars “hot” or “cold”, than one could shake the proverbial stick at. And all of them “dirty” with God or chance as Napoleon predicted, stayed on the side of the stronger battalions. No place for a dreamer, I said.

Fine Young Cannibals live 1985, Johnny Come Home [via mmusicool]

I didn’t want my MTV, I wanted none of it though the flash of it all tempted as it must. What I wanted was the glimpses of being fully human one got. Only glimpses though they were there, and shining like small vivid stars through a murk of gray and black.

Nobody knows the trouble you feel
Nobody cares the feelin’ is real
Johnny, we’re sorry, won’t you come on home
We worry, won’t you come on…
What is wrong in my life
That I must get drunk every night
Johnny, we’re sorry won’t you come on…
Use the phone, call your mom
She’s missing you badly, missing her son
Who do you know, where will you stay
Big city life is not what they say
Johnny, we’re sorry, won’t you come on home
We worry, won’t you come on…
What is wrong in my life
That I must get drunk every night
Johnny, we’re sorry won’t you come on home…
You’d better go, everything’s closed
Can’t find a room, money’s all blown
Nowhere to sleep, out in the cold
Nothing to eat, nowhere to go
Johnny, we’re sorry, won’t you come on home
We worry, won’t you come on…
What is wrong in my life
That I must get drunk every night
Johnny, we’re sorry won’t you come on home
We worry, won’t you come on home…

I didn’t need the 00s to teach me that money was a dissolving agent like bleach, killed real life to substitute instead one built on fakery and bluff, and boring o so dreary tedious boring in the end.

It didn’t take long, understand. Not when the money came so large, and too fast. Not ego, defect of character. Just the money, instead.

I’ve called you so many times today
And I guess it’s all true what your girlfriends say
That you don’t ever want to see me again
And your brother’s gonna kill me and he’s six feet ten
I guess you’d call it cowardice
But I’m not prepared to go on like this

I guess this is our last goodbye
And you don’t care, so I won’t cry
And all this guilt will be on your head
I guess you’d call it suicide
But I’m too full to swallow my pride

Fine Young Cannibals live 198?, Couldn’t Care More [via TXyon]

The space opened up in this song, why I must stop on first hearing it. What was that? Wore out the tape, the rewind button, playing and re-playing it.

Another day…
Another pride…
Somebody died
long before their time

I couldn’t care more
I couldn’t care less
If it’s not happening next door
You couldn’t care more

Always a war being fought
many die before they ought
when this happens abroad
don’t give it a second thought

I couldn’t care more
I couldn’t care less
If it’s not happening next door
You couldn’t care more

Sometimes I get so tired
spiraled on that madness
I’m all right
minding my own business
trouble everywhere
and it’s not that I don’t care
it happens all the time
but it’s never going to change your life

I couldn’t care more
I couldn’t care less
If it’s not happening next door
You couldn’t care more

I followed the news, decoded the spin, newspeak arrived on schedule. As the song went, “trouble everywhere/and it’s not that I don’t care.” But, in a nutshell, what was wrong with ‘the times’: that caring couldn’t carry one anywhere. The prosperous were all numb.

Pink Floyd live 1980, Comfortably Numb [via cacaroq]

After Animals one knew what to expect from the Floyd. Detached dead-end despair made into a movie, with no one asking, what’s wrong with this picture? All one knew was no more Shine on You Crazy Diamond. No more, like a last link gone.

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?
Come on, now,
I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I’ll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I’ve got that feeling once again
I can’t explain you would not understand
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

O.K.
Just a little pinprick.
There’ll be no more aaaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it’s working, good.
That’ll keep you going through the show
Come on it’s time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

I saw Pink Floyd live, touring The Wall. From the floor at an Olympic stadium. Yet neither it nor they could raise a flat I must feel. I was as detached from them as they were detached from me, everyone else in that Wagnerian pile.

Pet Shop Boys live 1986, Love Comes Quickly [via pertan]

I’ve taken a lot of grief for liking the Pet Shop Boys. When it was the unadulterated sweet of this song, not West End Girls or any other ‘club hit’. “Disaster struck quickly,” is their comment. “Flopped just about everywhere” when first released.

Sooner or later
this happens to everyone
to everyone

You can live your life lonely
heavy as stone
Live your life learning
and working alone
Say this is all you want
but I don’t believe that it’s true
’cause when you least expect it
waiting round the corner for you

Love comes quickly
whatever you do
you can’t stop falling
Love comes quickly
whatever you do
you can’t stop falling

You can live a life of luxury
if that’s what you want
Taste forbidden pleasures
whatever you want
You can fly away to the end of the world
but where does it get you to?
’cause just when you least expect it
just what you least expect

Love comes quickly
whatever you do
you can’t stop falling
Love comes quickly
whatever you do
you can’t stop falling

I know it sounds ridiculous
but speaking from experience
It may seem romantic
and that’s no defence
love will always get to you

Sooner or later, sooner or later
this happens to everyone
to everyone

You can fly away to the end of the world
but where does it get you?

Love comes quickly
whatever you do
you can’t stop falling
Love comes quickly
whatever you do
you can’t stop falling

What one had to remember, hold to through ‘the times’ from inside one’s numb.

Fine Young Cannibals live 1990, Good Thing [via TheSnakeMovie]

Best epitaph one could give the 80s when they were over: that one had survived them.

The one good thing
In my life
Has gone away
I don’t know why
She’s gone away
I don’t know where
Somewhere I can’t follow her
The one good thing didn’t stay so long
- Woo who who who
My back was turned and she was gone
- Hey hey hey

Good thing
Where have you gone
- Doo doo doobie doo
My good thing
You’ve been gone too long
- Doo doo doobie doo

People say I should forget
There’s plenty more don’t get upset
- Don’t get upset
People say she’s doing fine
Mutual friends I see sometime
That’s not what I want to hear
- Woo who who who
I want to hear she wants me near
- Hey hey hey

Good thing
Where have you gone
- Doo doo doobie doo
My good thing
You’ve been gone too long
- Good thing
- Doo doo doobie doo

Then one day
She came back
I was so happy that I didn’t ask
Morning came
- Hey hey hey hey
Into my room
- Woo who who who
Caught me dreaming like a fool
- Hey hey hey

Good thing
Where have you gone
- Doo doo doobie doo
My good thing
You’ve been gone too long
- Good thing
- Doo doo doobie doo

Good thing,
my good thing
- Doo doo doobie doo
Good God girl
Where have you gone
- Doo doo doobie doo
It’s been so long,
Good God girl
- Doo doo doobie doo
Good God girl
Good God girl
- Doo doo doobie doo
Good thing
