Kaylon recently built the rats a maze out of cardboard and they love it. We spent Friday night at home watching our rats run through the maze. It was a great Friday night.

LaTeX throws away an error messages when you try to include a file with special characters (in a LaT

LaTeX throws away an error messages when you try to include a file with special characters (in a LaTeX sense, e.g., hyphen, dot, underscore) in its name into the LaTeX source file. The FiNK package lets you get away with that. FiNK is an acronym for File Name Keeper. It’s not to be confused with the Fink package for OSX, which allows you to download compiled Open-Source binaries using
apt-get
in the command line from a common repository.

Here’s an example of using FiNK package with the
includegraphics
command:

\documentclass[11pt]{article}
\usepackage{graphicx, fink}
\begin{document}
\begin{figure}[h]
        \label{fig:figure_label}
        \centering
        \includegraphics[width=\textwidth]{file-name_with_special_chars.eps}
        \caption{The caption goes here}
\end{figure}
\end{document}

(More about
includegraphics
was posted awhile ago: here and here)

FiNK source: CTAN.

UPDATE: It seems that with MacTeX 2009, the problem mentioned at the top does not exist anymore (at least my testings say so)! However, I used to have this problem earlier when I’d use the TeTeX package (its development was stopped in 2006 and it has been superseded by TeXLive) on my Linux box.

FinkCommander is a graphical user interface for Fink and it’s been around for a few years. This new version is a universal application (32- and 64-bit Intel, 32- and 64-bit PowerPC), it’s been translated to Japanese, and the feedback e-mail actually says whether the feedback is positive or negative!
Let’s see some methods to find files and their packages in Fink. Using find find is a command

Let’s see some methods to find files and their packages in Fink.

Using find

find is a command that is provided by most, if not all, Unix-based systems, including Mac OS X. Let’s say you want to find a file named zipfile.py in your Fink installation. On my system,

$ find /sw -name zipfile.py
/sw/lib/python2.5/zipfile.py
/sw/lib/python2.6/zipfile.py

You can be more specific if you’re sure that a file resides in a certain directory, e.g.

$ find /sw/lib -name libgutils\*dylib
/sw/lib/fontforge/libgutils.1.0.3.dylib
/sw/lib/fontforge/libgutils.1.dylib
/sw/lib/fontforge/libgutils.dylib

In the command above I also used \* to indicate that I was interested in any file whose name starts with libgutils and ends with dylib.

Furthermore, depending on your configuration, you may use locate or mdfind for this purpose.

Using dpkg

Fink uses a fork of Debian’s dpkg tool for binary package management. Here are some useful dpkg commands.

If you want to find out which package installed a given file, use dpkg -S. For example,

$ dpkg -S zipfile.py
python26: /sw/lib/python2.6/zipfile.pyc
python26: /sw/lib/python2.6/zipfile.pyo
python26: /sw/lib/python2.6/test/test_zipfile.pyc
python26: /sw/lib/python2.6/test/test_zipfile.pyo
python25: /sw/lib/python2.5/zipfile.py
python25: /sw/lib/python2.5/zipfile.pyc
python25: /sw/lib/python2.5/zipfile.pyo
python25: /sw/lib/python2.5/test/test_zipfile.pyc
python25: /sw/lib/python2.5/test/test_zipfile.pyo
python26: /sw/lib/python2.6/test/test_zipfile.py
python25: /sw/lib/python2.5/test/test_zipfile.py
python26: /sw/lib/python2.6/zipfile.py

Specifying an absolute path will limit the results:

$ dpkg -S /sw/lib/python2.6/zipfile.py
python26: /sw/lib/python2.6/zipfile.py

If you want to list the files installed by a given package (e.g. the di package), use dpkg -L:

$ dpkg -L di
/.
/sw
/sw/bin
/sw/bin/di
/sw/bin/mi
/sw/share
/sw/share/doc
/sw/share/doc/di
/sw/share/doc/di/MANIFEST
/sw/share/doc/di/README
/sw/share/man
/sw/share/man/man1
/sw/share/man/man1/di.1

The grep command can be useful to filter the results: to list only the binaries (programs) installed under /sw/bin,

$ dpkg -L di | grep ^/sw/bin
/sw/bin
/sw/bin/di
/sw/bin/mi

If you have a binary package (i.e., a .deb file that was either built on your machine or obtained via a binary distribution), you need to use dpkg -c instead:

$ dpkg -c /sw/fink/debs/bibclean_2.11.4-2_darwin-i386.deb
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2009-09-16 09:04 ./
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/bin/
-rwxr-xr-x root/admin   112564 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/bin/bibclean
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/doc/
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/doc/bibclean/
-rw-r--r-- root/admin    26550 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/doc/bibclean/README
-rw-r--r-- root/admin     2932 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/doc/bibclean/bibclean.copyright
-rw-r--r-- root/admin    48768 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/doc/bibclean/bibclean.pdf
-rw-r--r-- root/admin    76512 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/doc/bibclean/bibclean.ps
-rw-r--r-- root/admin    55226 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/doc/bibclean/bibclean.txt
drwxr-xr-x root/admin        0 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/man/

-rw-r--r-- root/admin    42974 2009-09-16 09:04 ./sw/share/man/man1/bibclean.1

The directory/folder /sw/fink/debs contains convenient symbolic links to the actual .deb files created when packages were built on your machine. On the other hand, .deb files obtained via binary distributions are located under /sw/var/cache/apt/archives.

Welcome to a new instalment of the statistics posts.

As usual, these statistics refer to package description files. A package description is a .info file that describes the information that Fink needs in order to manage packages. Sometimes a package is split into multiple .info files (e.g. package-10.5.info and package-10.6.info). It is also possible that a single .info file defines multiple packages: split-offs, different Perl/Python/… versions, -mac/-x11, etc. I’ve also counted a .info file that is in both stable and unstable as a single file.

The (monthly) evolution of the number of package descriptions is shown inside parentheses/in italics.

Currently Fink has 5,385 (+56) .info files split into the following sections:

Installing a package (AKA software) from source code is often considered to be the secret cult of th

Installing a package (AKA software) from source code is often considered to be the secret cult of the worshipers of the Geek God. But, you know, it’s not that difficult. Let’s see how we can do it.

First, some preliminaries. Why should I build it form the source code? Well, source codes are more or less platform independent. If you have a suitable compiler and necessary libraries, you may install it on any platform of your choice. Source code files are available in ASCII plain text format (not binaries) — so you can study it and understand what it does and whether/ how it may affect your system. Reading the description of a software distributed as a binary does not even come close to that — you really don’t know what that piece of software does until you actually run it. Needless to add, you may include your changes to the open-source code to suit your needs as well in accordance with the relevant license.

Secondly, where can I find the source code? The source code for a open-source package is often distributed in compressed format (i.e., with an extension “
tar.gz
”, “
tgz
” or “
tar.bz2
” — that’s why it’s also called tarball). You may download the tarball from a reliable source, e.g. homepage of the package developer, Free Software Directory, Open Source Software directory, linux.org, Ubuntu archive, Darwin ports, Fink and Open Source Apple website. Last three are specifically intended for OSX running Darwin. Wikipedia also has a nice list of Free and Open Source softwares.

Now, let’s do the installation step-by step. Create a directory (say,
~/packages
) where you want to save the packages, navigate to that directory, save the tarball (say,
newpack.tar.gz
) there and uncompress it:

$ tar zxvf newpack.tar.gz

Replace “
zxvf
” by “
j
xvf” if it has a “
tar.bz2
” extension instead of “
tar.gz
” or “
tgz
”.

Then navigate to the uncompressed directory (usually
newpack
, but be sure of that first using the
ls
command) using

$ cd newpack

and read the instruction files (e.g., INSTRUCTIONS, INSTALL, README), if any, for special instructions using your favorite text editor. Otherwise, the normal procedure for installation is the following series of commands: (wait for each one to finish before you issue the next command!)

$ ./configure
$ make
$ sudo make install

You need to enter the superuser password in the last step as it copies the executable in the system’s executable directory (e.g.,
/bin, /sbin/
). That’s it!

However, you may want to clean up the mess (especially the object files) created by the installation process using:

$ make clean

In a spree of cleaning up, however, don’t delete the file named
Makefile
: you need this if you want to uninstall the package (the above command won’t delete it).

In order to uninstall the package, navigate to the same directory (
~/packages/newpack/
), and issue the following command:

$ sudo make uninstall

You need to enter the superuser password for this.

2009-10-29 10:40 (GMT) update: Martin Costabel has detected that some of the rsync mirrors are still stalled. The following ones are reported to be working and up-to-date:

rsync://ber.de.eu.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/
rsync://ams.nl.eu.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo/

Also, http://www.finkproject.org should be working and up-to-date. Please report any issues to the fink-users mailing list.

2009-10-28 00:20 (GMT) update: finkmirrors.net is fixed and already working for some users (it might take some time for the changes to propagate to your DNS servers). This means that rsync selfupdate, source files, and bindists should be working. You might want to revert the changes that were made to /sw/etc/fink.conf and /sw/etc/apt/sources.list and run fink scanpackages.

—

As some of you might have noticed, our Fink Web site is down due to server issues. This also means that the rsync mirrors aren’t updating and the master mirror is unreachable. Whilst we sort this out, follow the (updated) instructions below.

“Clockenflap: Episode One” from Clockenflap Festival on Vimeo

Students often bemoan the lack of exciting concerts in Hong Kong. Besides the occasional Coldplay or Jason Mraz gig, there have been few opportunities since the demise of Harborfest. Rival S.A.R. Macau is now beginning to outclass Hong Kong as the international music hub of the region, having hosted headliners Lady Gaga and Linkin Park earlier this year. Quick escapades to Macau are fast becoming the norm among Hong Kongers dissatisfied with the gigs (or lack thereof) available here.

In fact, Hong Kong is witnessing the emergence of a new grassroots live music scene. Fueled by burgeoning local bands and artists from abroad looking to tap into the Asia market, this movement is putting Hong Kong on the map. Thanks to events like HK Live! and CWS Rockraiser, homegrown indie bands from around the region are coming together to make some noise. Meanwhile, Grappa’s Cellar in Central has hosted some of the hippest acts out there, including Ratatat, British Sea Power, and (next month) Owl City.

But the inaugural moment for this trend will no doubt be the upcoming Clockenflap Festival on November 7-8. The second annual grassroots “music & multimedia arts festival” promises to be one of the best music events of 2009. Last year, when the festival was first started, BBC Radio praised it for “giving the city of Hong Kong a much needed shot of culture.” The event is the brainchild of Jay Forster and Mike Hill, members of the music/art collective Robot. By bringing together local and international bands, filmmakers, and artists, Clockenflap hopes to promote a “thriving art scene… for the social well-being of [Hong Kong].”

“Clockenflap: Episode Two” from Clockenflap Festival on Vimeo

“It’s a pretty bleak landscape if you don’t have at least one outdoor festival a year,” Forster explains. Accordingly, the festival takes place out on the open lawns of Cyberport, thus emphasizing the event’s grassroots nature. And with such an eclectic yet impressive lineup, it looks like bleakness is entirely out of the question. Topping the list are razor-sharp UK garage rock duo Blood Red Shoes and Alexis Taylor, one of the founding members of catchy synthpop band Hot Chip. They will be joined by electronic duo Yacht, British singer-songwriter Fink, and Welsh indie pop septet Los Campesinos!, perhaps one of my favorite bands today.

This year’s festival also includes a number of art shows and film screenings, including local street art collective Start From Zero, selections from the I Shot Hong Kong Film Festival, and Australian installation artist Hanna Hoyne. The list doesn’t stop there – Forster and Hill hope that the event can help ”put the city on Asia’s contemporary media-arts circuit.” They’ve already committed to another five years of Clockenflap, and it can only get bigger and better. If successful, they’re also thinking of expanding the project to other Asian cities, such as Singapore.

So, where’s the music, you ask? It’s right here, in Hong Kong, at Cyberport, on November 7th and 8th – at Clockenflap. Get your tickets now from HK Ticketing, or check out the Clockenflap website for more details! Yes, this post was shamelessly recycled from my latest Junto article.
Missy Elliott – Teary Eyed

Who would’ve thought that Missy Elliott had a soft side (apart from her supple rear-end)? I have only recently discovered what some might affectionately term “ghetto music.” I loooove this power woman. Usually a fun hard-edge lady, with words in her songs like “I’m a pain in your rectum, I am that bitch y’all slept on,” Missy here is more like early “retiree” Lauryn Hill. Which is good considering that the joy of Lauryn-Ms-get-over-yourself’s world now lies in God, money and her children, not music as Sister Act part 2 would suggest. Good thing Missy doesn’t take herself too seriously… Can’t wait to see what new album Block Party will bring! (If, of course, the release date isn’t pushed back AGAIN!)

Cicada – Talking

Cicada have been around for a while apparently… I first heard them thanks to The Twelves remix of Metropolis, which speeds up the slow song. Usually led by female vocals, this song displays good Cut Copy-like male vocals. The deep voice beats back the twee Empire of the Sun-like sound that threatens to break through.

My Latest Novel – Lacklustre

I remember My Latest Novel’s first album and falling in love with The Hope Edition. What a nice song… The rest of the album though… At times I find this band a bit clumsy and I must admit new album, Deaths and Entrances, tries too hard to be like the band Low and sounds too Scottish at the same time. Of course yes, they are Scottish, but it wasn’t as Twilight Sad-obvious last time…

Fink – Move on Me

Fink has been a bit braver lately. Which is good because I think this guy has a naturally gorgeous voice and range, but often in the past hasn’t really utilised these qualities.
I don’t love this song as much as Sort of Revolution but the piano and backing vocals are pretty touching and Move on Me will likely outlive the released single.

Eliza Doolittle – Money Box (Jamie from The xx Remix)

Who is Eliza Doolittle? She’s new, that’s who! This is a cute ditty, and it’s remixed by Jamie from The xx (who are pretty much amazing at the moment).

Mew – Silas the Magic Car

Mew apparently have 5 albums! Really? Wow, where have I been? I don’t think they’re the best band *ever* and I’ve only recently procured their latest album so *shrug* I’m not sure if I’ll go through their backcatalogue just yet. But this song is very pretty and reminds me a little of Death Cab for Cutie (when they were less self indulgent).

The Walkmen – On the Water

The Walkmen’s last album is pretty gosh darn cool! I really got into it and I’m excited they’ve released a new video for On the Water cause it’s my favourite song. Why is killing bunnies so sad? Why do I care so much when a farmer, who is protecting his crop, shoots and kills a bunny with colours? I don’t know. The video for Bright Eyes (and well, a Donnie Darko reference) prompted me to read Watership Down… I did abandon it though, and I do enjoy a good rabbit stew. So maybe Donnie puts it best when he says, “y’know, I like rabbits and all. They’re cute and they’re horny. And if you’re cute and you’re horny, then you’re probably happy, in that you don’t know who you are and why you’re even alive. And you just wanna have sex as many times as possible before you die… I mean, I just don’t see the point in crying over a dead rabbit! Y’know, who never even feared death to begin with.”
Back to the drawing board?

GNU Wget is a popular file download program, being installed by default on many Linux distributions.

GNU Wget is a popular file download program, being installed by default on many Linux distributions. Recent Mac OS versions don’t ship Wget, though – Apple ships cURL instead.

Fink provides a wget package that installs Wget. It includes SSL (https) support provided by Mac OS built-in OpenSSL. There’s a problem with that, though: on Mac OS versions earlier than 10.6, Apple’s OpenSSL doesn’t use the trusted root certificates available on the system (the ones listed by Keychain.app), so it is not able to validate SSL certificates on its own. Note that OpenSSL itself (independently of being shipped with Mac OS) isn’t distributed with root certificates by default.

Because of this, on Mac OS versions earlier than 10.6 the command

wget https://fedorahosted.org

won’t work:

ERROR: cannot verify fedorahosted.org's certificate,
issued by `/C=US/O=Equifax/OU=Equifax Secure
Certificate Authority':
Unable to locally verify the issuer's authority.
To connect to fedorahosted.org insecurely, use
`--no-check-certificate'.
Unable to establish SSL connection.

There are a couple of options to circumvent this. As the error message says, it’s possible to use –no-check-certificate, which is insecure. Another option is –ca-certificate=file where file is a bundle of trusted certification authority certificates. Fink provides a package called ca-bundle that installs a convenient file containing a bundle of CA certificates commonly used by open source Web browsers. After running

fink install ca-bundle

you should be able to use /sw/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt with Wget:

wget --ca-certificate=/sw/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt \
https://fedorahosted.org

Fortunately, you may specify that option in one of Wget’s startup files (e.g. $HOME/.wgetrc or /sw/etc/wgetrc) by adding the following line to your startup file of choice:

ca_certificate = /sw/etc/ssl/certs/ca-bundle.crt

And voilà!, you may use wget as usual:

wget https://fedorahosted.org

This is particularly useful if you’re using Wget as your DownloadMethod and Fink needs to download a source file from an https URL.

Currently Fink has 5,329 (+63) .info files split into the following sections:

Finally found some time to get out of my bubble and go over the configuration of a new Snow Leopard installation. Time to make a choice: Fink or MacPorts? For some reason I have *both* wondering around on my hard disk.

First of all, they both have to be upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.1 – so, to the uninstall:

Fink:

%%

sudo rm -rf /sw

Hier zit ik dan. Zeer Carrie B. gewijs.

zoeken.
Maar niet volop zoeken. Niet luid zoeken. Niet hard zoeken.
Gewoon rustig vinden.
Dat lijkt me prachtig.
