25.11.09 Ad X Factor stasera, mercoledì venticinque novembre, i Finley con «Gruppo Randa» ed Elio e le storie tese. Ah, dimenticavo, c’è anche Gigi D’Alessio, un cantante forse amato dalle vostre cugine o parenti (prima di tutto immaginatevi quanto l’ho dimenticato ed, in secondo luogo, spero di sbagliarmi, ma sono quasi sicuro che sarà così…). Qui D’Alessio canterà «Non riattaccare» da 6 come sei e poi ci saranno ovviamente le canzoni e Claudia Gerini. Ed a proposito della Gerini, chissà come sono le colonne sonore dei suoi film…

Quanto ai brani, saranno per Silver «Sunday Morning» dei Velvet Underground ed «Un piccolo aiuto» di Zucchero, pezzo che non conosco. Per Marco «Black in Black» degli Ac/Dc e «Senza fine» di Gino Paoli. Per Giuliano «Stand By Me» di B. B. Buona visione… Su un’altra televisione musicale c’è Yo! dall’una alle due di notte che sarebbe dedicato all’r&b, al rap, all’hip hop ed al groove, Party Zone dalle due alle quattro (musica da discoteca?) e Chill Out Zone fino alle sei del mattino.

Nel primo caso con il conduttore Carlo Lucarelli. Su All Music Playlist dalle nove di sera con Dolcenera, già vista su Sat2000, e poi Mono su Ben Harper dalle dieci di sera.

Baglioni e Venuti. Musica anche ad I migliori anni di Raiuno dalle 21.10, ma posso scrivervi ben poco sui cantanti. 16.11.08 Si concludono oggi gli Slany Jazz Days – musica jazz, blues, spiritual e gospel – in una cittadina (Slany appunto) della Repubblica Ceca, con il gruppo The Swings dalle 10.30 alle 12. Alle 17 concerto di chiusura per il Blues Alive di Sumperk, sempre in Repubblica ceca. L’esibizione comprende Limbo, Kulturní úderka, la Curtis Salgado Band e Wanda Johnson insieme alla Shrimp City Slim Blues Band. Finley's an emerging star

Jermichael Finley won’t be a panacea for the offense, but the return of the young tight end should go a long way in curing what ails the sputtering unit. “He won’t make the pass protection any better, but he’ll give Aaron Rodgers someplace to go with the ball when the pocket is caving in around him,” said a longtime NFL scout. “At 6-5, Finley is an easy target to locate. Donald Driver and Greg Jennings are quality wide receivers, but those little guys can get lost in a crowd. A big and athletic tight end is the best security blanket a quarterback can have.”

At his Monday press conference, Mike McCarthy said that Finley will return to practice on Wednesday and should be ready to go on Sunday against San Francisco. “I anticipate he’ll be back if he gets through the week,” said the coach. While Donald Lee and Spencer Havner have made a few big plays in Finley’s absence, neither can stretch the field. “It might seem funny saying this about a guy with only 23 career catches,” added the scout, “but before he got injured, I think he was the player who scared opposing defensive coordinators the most.” That doesn’t sound funny to fans; it sounds very exciting.

If you’ve never heard this one before, he might strike you as an invented two-syllable twist on Finn.  Not so.

Thanks to Bevan for suggesting the storied Fintan as Name of the Day.

Finnegan, Phinnaeus, Finbar, Finley, Griffin … There are plenty of ways to get to the nickname Finn, and he stands nicely on his own, too.  But Fintan isn’t merely a formal choice for the birth certificate.  He’s a separate name with a story of his own.  

The more traditional spelling would be Fionntán and is found in Irish myth.  Their version of the Biblical Noah’s Ark has a second chapter.  Fintan mac Bóchra was part of a group who arrived in Ireland before the flooding began.  Noah’s granddaughter, Cessair, was among them.  Despite their travels, Cessair and company would perish in the deluge.  Fintan, however, turned into a salmon and lived – in fact, he’d eventually return to human form and live for more than 5,000 years – long enough to serve as an advisor to Finn McCool.  

If myth doesn’t move you, there are two Saints Fintan:

• Leinster-born Saint Fintan died in 603, after having spent some years as a hermit;
• A second Saint Fintan founded an abbey in County Wexford, before dying in 635.  A well in Limerick is named after him and attributed with all sorts of mystical powers.

The name was much less common in recent centuries, though there was James Fintan Lalor, an Irish revolutionary, and Fintan Mundwiler, a nineteenth century abbot of St. Meinrad’s Abbey in Indiana.

Like Finn and many Fin- names, Fintan’s first part – fionn – derives from the Gaelic word for “white.”  The second half could mean fire, could mean bull, could refer to hair color, could even mean wise.  Fire is the most commonly cited, and it’s an intriguing image.

While his exact meaning is open to debate, there’s little doubt about his style – he’s as Irish as a shamrock.  He’d fit right in with Ryan and Aidan and Riley, but his sound is distinct enough to stand out, too.  The name has never ranked in the US Top 1000.

Fintan’s only shortcoming – and this could prove to be a biggie – is the rise of Finn names.  Since 2000, there have been:

• Nearly 13,000 new baby Griffins;
• Almost 4,000 Finns;
• 1,200 Finnegans;
• And more than 1,300 female Finleys.

The name cluster is on the upswing.  After all, Julia Roberts christened her firstborn son Phinnaeus “Finn” late in 2004.  And television’s Glee has just given singing quarterback Finn a few months ago.  Little wonder that Finn leapt from #833 in 2000 to #368 last year.  He also steadily ranks among the top search name for boys on this site.

Yet Fintan’s sound remains distinctive, and unlike Finley/Finlay, unlikely to be borrowed by the girls.

So if you’re seeking a choice that is saintly, obscure and impeccably Irish, Fintan is one to consider.

Finley was a good sport and has his worn his costume most of the day, a few sad looks here and there but he even went on a walk around the neighborhood all dressed up!

This year we actually got our first tick-or-treater! We dont go out and buy candy because we don’t expect any so I set out our full sized candy. Our solo trick- or-treater was a little chicken.

Albie loves his dentist in Wilmington despite trying to find one up here in Raleigh, so 2 times a year he makes a long weekend and goes to see his dentist. This is great for him because he also gets to see his friends in Wilmington and he always comes back with stories about Ozzie’s Band’s show that he saw or William’s  post birthday dinner/ breakfast at Jimbo’s  but it sucks for Finley and I because we hold down the fort here in Raleigh.

This particular weekend was definitely starting to get cold and it was very gray so Finley and I cuddled up on the couch and worked on my newest puzzle. This was our only Bye week built into the football schedule this year so i was kind of determined to be as lazy as possible.

Saturday afternoon I went to the fair with Greg. But on Saturday night I also got the chance to go out with our friend Christie who moved to Austin, Texas this past year! (Yay!) She was actually in town for 2 of our friends who got married ( Congrats David & Amy!). Because their wedding was in the morning everyone came out that night. Unfortunately the bar that was selected played a UFC fight on every TV in the whole place. I had not watched a UFC fight before and I can tell you that I will not be watching again

Finley and I rounded out the weekend with the best lazy Sunday in a long time. In an effort to find something good on TV I stumbled upon the beginning of a Project Runway marathon on Lifetime of the newest season. omg. This might be one of my new favorite shows!

I am completely caught up to date for this season and I am super excited to see what happens next week. The only downside to this show is how sad it makes your closet feel…

This weekend we are back to Football so we will head down to Tallahassee, Florida to play against FSU on Halloween.  Go Pack!

Monday morning we landed back in Raleigh around 9 am after having Finley at his favorite kennel, Pupsi, all weekend and immediately took him to the vet, Preston Animal Hospital, where he scheduled to have a full exam and all of his boosters.

Our vet is super great and the facilities are clean and the people are so nice – but I am sick of hearing that he is overweight!!

We have cut his food drastically, we don’t give treats and he goes on a quick walk every night.  His highest weight was up to about 70lbs but we have gotten him down to 57. Now the vet wants him to 52!! She wants us to be able to feel little ribs! How sad is that?

The worst part was the stink that he brought home from the kennel. Whew! He smelled so bad and had random wet patches of fur under his belly so we gave him a quick bath too. (He is thinking of boycotting vacations that he doesn’t go on with us because of the treatment he gets when we return.)

So needless to say, after all of his poking, prodding, washing and playing in the past few days he was so sleepy that he would barely lift his little head. So pitiful…

In Honor of my exciting post about chicken, here are some funny pictures of Finley getting his dinner.

We heard Cesar Milan say , ONE time, that dogs are used to working for their food. So we took this to heart and have gone way over board like we normally do in all things related to Finley.

Every night he has to sit and be very ‘calm’ before we ask him to a trick.

With Finn racing up the charts, can this equally Irish appellation be far behind?

Determining the exact popularity of Finn is tricky.  There’s Finn (#368 in 2008, or about 832 Finns).  But there’s also Finnegan (another 370 newborns), the Kennedy-esque Finbar, Finley (264 boys plus twice as many girls) and the sort-of-kind-of-could-lead-to-Finn choice, Griffin (given to over 1400 boys).  Throw in starbaby Phinnaeus and re-spellings like Finnaeus, and if you haven’t met one yet, you soon will.

On the other hand, determining Flynn’s popularity is simple.  He’s never ranked in the US Top 1000.

Both choices are Irish.  Flynn is linked to the surname Ó Flainn or Ó Floinn, traditionally bestowed on descendants of Flann Sinna – a ninth century High King of Ireland.

You might still find a Flann or three in Ireland.  Flann O’Brien was the penname of a popular 20th century writer.  His contemporary, Flann O’Riain, drew political cartoons and advanced the use of the Irish language.  In the US, you might meet a Flannery, but Flann is probably too close to dessert for an American parent to consider.

Flann, Flannery and Flynn are all attributed to an Irish Gaelic word meaning red or ruddy, making them fitting choices for a little redheaded baby.  And while Flannery leans feminine, thanks to novelist Flannery O’Connor, Flynn feels brisk and masculine.

It’s a fairly common surname, worn by:

• Actor Neil Flynn plays the janitor on Scrubs.  He was also Lindsay Lohan’s anthropologist dad in Mean Girls;
• The cast of long-running British police drama The Bill included actor Daniel Flynn as Superintendent John Heaton for three seasons;
• In the 1960s, Joe Flynn played Captain Binghamton on McHale’s Navy.  He’s the one who would shout:  What is it, What, WHAT, WHAT?;
• In the 1930s, Edward Flynn was an American boxer – he scored an Olympic gold medal.  At about the same time, Eddie Flynn was an Irish soccer star;
• Researcher James R. Flynn identified the Flynn Effect – the tendency of IQ scores to rise over time;
• Trash metal gives us Robb Flynn, the guitarist for Machine Head;
• Vince Flynn pens thrillers, and has served as a story consultant to 24.

And then there’s Errol Flynn.  Born in Tasmania, the son of an academic, Flynn became one of Hollywood’s brightest stars in the 1930s.  He headlined swashbuckling adventures like The Adventures of Robin Hood.  Flynn’s characters always got the girl.

No wonder Flynn sounds active and exciting.

You’ll also find Flynn on the map.  And gamers might think of Tales of Vesperia’s noble Imperial Knight by the name.

If there’s any real drawback to Flynn, it is that he’s so rarely worn as a first name.  As Finn rises, your Flynn might find himself introducing himself as “Flynn.  With an L.  Rhymes with Lynn.”

But if you’re looking for a name that is short but complete, and masculine without sounding more like a GI Joe figure than a child, Flynn just might suit.

Mom and Anna came up this weekend for Parents and Families’ weekend and while they were here we did a preview of Finley’s Halloween costume and it was awesome!

Man if Nike released these I would forgive them for all the hybrids this year….maybe not all of them (60+) not pointing any elbows, and no I am not crippin despite certain rumors, lmao.

Eccole, finalmente. Le avevamo attese, sono arrivate. Parliamo delle indiscrezioni sui partecipanti alla prossima edizione del Festival di Sanremo 2010, sezione Artisti (cioè i big). Cominciamo dalle certezze: Marco Mengoni, vincitore di X Factor, è come già noto, il primo partecipante sicuro, perchè il direttore artistico Gianmarco Mazzi aveva annunciato questo premio aggiuntivo per il vincitore della rassegna oltre alla promozione del disco. Sarà uno dei 14 big in gara. Che potrebbero all’ultimo minuto anche diventare 16. Come l’anno scorso.

Si profila un derby fra vincitori di X Factor con Matteo Becucci, campione della seconda edizione: lo avevamo annunciato in estate per primi, raccogliendo le parole del cantante livornese durante il tour della manifestazione. Sul fronte delle cantanti donne, dopo la clamorosa bocciatura dell’anno scorso, il tam tam parla dell’approdo all’Ariston di Paola Turci, pronta dunque a far uscire il secondo dei suoi altri due album annunciati per il 2010.

E con lei, sul fronte femminile, appare certa un’altra presenza già annunciata dall’artista medesima, quella di Arisa. E qausi certamente ci sarà un altro derby fra ex Nuove Proposte (ed ottime interpreti non autrici) con l’ottima Malika Ayane. Alla voce papabili figurano invece Ivana Spagna, Irene Grandi, Mietta, Anna Oxa. Meno probabile, a sentire la casa discografica, la ex Amici Alessandra Amoroso. Più probabile che invece dal programma di Canale 5 arrivi Valerio Scanu.

Per la serie: “a volte ritornano (purtroppo)” in rampa di lancio Matia Bazar, Sonohra e Finley. Più gradito sarebbe invece il ritorno – dopo il flop del 2004 dell’ex Timoria Omar Pedrini.

Ci sarà qualche ensemble estemporanea come successe col trio Pupo-Belli-Ndour l’anno scorso: dopo il successo del loro tour, c’è chi parla di Luca Barbarossa e dell’attore Neri Marcorè. La Clerici sarà affiancata in conduzione da un uomo diverso ogni sera, circolano i nomi di Pippo Baudo, Christian De Sica, Paolo Bonolis. I NOMI DEI 14 PARTECIPANTI SARANNO RESI NOTI IL 18 DICEMBRE.

NOMI DELL’ULTIM’ORA: L’ultimo aggiornamento di questo post (siamo a Giovedì 17), segnala praticamente per certa la presenza di Alessandra Amoroso, Morgan, Finley, Irene Grandi, Noemi, Arisa. Questo taglia fuori praticamente Matteo Becucci e Valerio Scanu (difficile che vada in scena il remake dell’edizione 2008 di Amici). Sembra confermata la presenza di Malika Ayane, anche se le quotazioni scendono, come quelle di Paola Turci, Sonohra, Zero Assoluto, Anna Oxa, Spagna, Giuliano Palma. Salgono i Matia Bazar, rispunta Povia, con una canzone destinata a far discutere e dedicata al caso Englaro, ma la vera sorpresa potrebbero essere i Baustelle.

Su “Il Giornale” (vi ricordo che la prima firma è Paolo Giordano, attuale presidente di Sanremolab, dunque bene informato!) troviamo invece quotazioni buone per Barbarossa-Marcorè, il grande ritorno di Gerardina Trovato e nientemeno che Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia.

DIALETTO – Scende invece la possibilità che possa esserci una canzone in dialetto. Circolavano i nomi di Cristiano De Andrè (in genovese) e Davide Van de Sfroos (in dialetto delle valli comasche).E’stato già smentito – ma non si sa mai – il supertrio Pino Daniele-Gigi D’Alessio- Massimo Ranieri. La novità è che potrebbe svoglersi un concorso parallelo prima di Sanremo fra pezzi in dialetto, il cui vincitore sarebbe in gara al Festival come big aggiunto. Vedremo.

Sorvoliamo rapidi sul contorno di Gigi D’Alessio, Claudia Gerini, Elio & Le Storie Tese e Finley.

Le prime due manche scivolano via (stranamente) veloci e il quadro degli ultimi  concorrenti è ormai chiarissimo.

Parliamo, invece, dei quattro inediti:

• GIULIANO “Ruvido“:  ricorda pericolosamente All I Wanna Do di Sheryl Crow. E’ un pezzo pop dignitoso che ben si sposa con la vocalità del giovane interprete sardo. Potrebbe fare bene in radio, ma non entusiasma.

• SILVER “Fuori“: pezzo imbarazzante. Qualcuno finirà per fischiettarla, ma, al massimo, poteva concorrere a Lo Zecchino D’Oro.

• YAVANNA “Una Donna Migliore“: brano gradevole, con un bell’arrangiamento. Risente della dimensione live e di qualche difetto di dizione, la versione in studio farà sicuramente meglio.

• MARCO “Dove Si Vola“: questo è l’unica vera hit annunciata. Ricorda lo stile dei singoli d Alessandra Amoroso e non farà fatica a volare in alto. E’ nata una stella, anche se non dovesse vincere.

Eliminato Silver. Ed era proprio ora.
