Con el cierre de la quinta fecha de la fase de grupos de la UEFA Champions League 2009/2010, el panorama de cara a los compromisos de octavos de final parece ser más claro para algunos equipos, mientras que para otros, a falta de una fecha para concluir esta instancia, las oportunidades se acabaron. A los tres equipos clasificados en la cuarta jornada disputada hace apenas dos semanas -Chelsea, Porto y Sevilla-, se sumaron entre el día martes y miércoles, Manchester United, Bordeaux, Fiorentina, Olimpique de Lyon y Arsenal. De esta manera, ya son ocho los equipos que se aseguraron un lugar entre los mejores dieciseis de la máxima competición europea a nivel de clubes.

En cuanto a las actuaciones argentinas, la más destacada fue la del delantero del Real Madrid Gonzalo Higuaín. El ex-atacante de River Plate marcó el único gol en la victoria que obtuvo su equipo frente al FC Zurich en el estadio Santiago Bernabeú. De esta manera, el conjunto blanco quedó bien posicionado de cara a la última jornada de la fase de grupos y espera confiado el derby del próximo fin de semana frente la Barcelona en el cual defenderá la punta de la Liga Española.

El gol de Lucho González fue fundamental para que su equipo, el Olimpique de Marsella, mantenga intactas sus chances de clasificar a la instancia de octavos de final del máximo certamen a nivel de clubes de Europa

Por su parte, con un Lionel Messi reservado de cara al clásico español, el equipo catalán también llega en alza después de la contundente victoria sobre el Inter, que lo coloca en la cima del grupo F, con buenas perspectivas de clasificación de cara a la última fecha de la fase de grupos.

Otro argentino que tuvo una destacada actuación fue Luis González en el empate de su equipo, Olimpique de Marsella, en su enfrentamiento con el Milán en el estadio San Siro. El ex-volante de Huracán y River Plate marcó el único gol de su equipo, que sirvió para obtener un importante empate que lo coloca con posibilidades de clasificación en el grupo C. En la próxima jornada recibirá al Real Madrid.

La última fecha de la fase de grupos se disputará entre el 8 y 9 de diciembre.

Not such a good day yesterday for Italian squads in the Champions League. In fact, apart from Fiorentina, it wasn’t such a good week. Inter got stomped 2-0 by Barcelona, Marseille drew AC Milan with a goal apiece and Juventus fell 2-0 to Bordeaux; meanwhile humble Fiorentina edged Lyon 1-0 to seal their qualification and send Liverpool crashing prematurely out of the competition. As far as coefficients go, the Bundesliga isn’t exactly doing its best to overtake Serie A so far; Bayern Münich needs to beat Juventus at home in their next fixture to leapfrog them and move on, VfB Stuttgart have a chance if they defeat upstarts Unirea Urziceni in their final match, while VfL Wolfsburg sit tied at second in their group and have the obstacle of a home match against Manchester United to navigate if they wish to move on into the round of 16. Meanwhile, it’s the French who have asserted themselves as a force to be reckoned with; at this point both Bordeaux and Lyon have sealed their passage into the next round, while Marseille have a very real chance, but also a very strong opponent to overcome in Real Madrid in their final match of the group stages. As for the Spanish, both Barca and Real Madrid have had their hiccups in the group matches – Real in the form of a loss and a draw to AC Milan, Barca with a loss and draw to Rubin Kazan. Atlético Madrid have been abysmal, and only Sevilla have really succeeded in dominating their group (although they gave up an embarrassing defeat on Tuesday). The only sides looking wholly comfortable (apart from the aforementioned French) are the English — other than Liverpool, of course. Chelsea, United and Arsenal have all topped their groups with relative ease, thus, three English teams have sealed their qualification, while one has sealed its own demise. At this key point in the group stages, it really is anybody’s tournament to be won, but I will say that Chelsea look to be leading the pack right now, and Bordeaux may reveal themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

That being said, Chelsea fans: don’t get too big-headed just yet, because we’ve got a long way to go yet and there’s bound to be a few surprises along the way.

Bordeaux 2×0 Juventus: o time francês é a grande surpresa e está incrível. Bateu a Juve em casa com dois gols de cabeça e é líder disparado e classificado.

Bayern 1×0 Maccabi: com um gol solitário, os alemães ainda sonham. O time ocupa uma fraca terceira colocação e pode ficar de fora. Na última rodada Bayern e Juve se enfrentam pra ver quem fica e quem sai.

Grupo B:

CSKA 2×1 Wolfsburg: os alemães saíram  na frente mas vacilaram e agora têm que esperar a última rodada. Os gols do CSKA foram de Necid e Krasic. Agora ambas equipes possuem 7 pontos e sonham em chegar às Oitavas.

Manchester 0×1 Besiktas: o time inglês já havia dado sinais de fraqueza na última partida em 3×3 com o CSKA. Perdeu, embora já classificado.

Grupo C:

Real Madrid 1×0 Zurich: com a cabeça no clássico contra o Barça, os merengues suaram pra vencer. O gol foi marcado por Higuaín, após passe de Kaká. Agora, os espanhóis são líderes do grupo.

Milan 1×1 Olympique: a maldição do San Siro permanece e o Milan não venceu em casa ainda nessa Champions. O gol de Borrielo deixou os italianos em vantagem por 6 minutos, já que Lucho empatou pouco depois. Grupo embolado e as duas vagas serão definidas apenas na última rodada.

Grupo C:

Chelsea 1×0 Porto: ambos classificados, os times jogaram sem grande emoção. O gol do Chelsea foi marcado por Anelka. Na última rodada, as equipes definem apenas quem será primeiro e quem será segundo.

Apoel 1×1 Atlético de Madrid: mais um resultado medíocre dos espanhóis, que já estavam eliminados. A equipe do Chipre não assusta ningém, mas o Atlético conseguiu dois bravos empates com eles.

Grupo E:

Fiorentina 1×0 Lyon: um gol de pênalti que deu a liderança e a classificação à Viola. A Fiorentina faz uma campanha excelente e convincente. O Lyon já estava classificado e não apresentou um esforço muito grande.

Debrecen 0×1 Liverpool: a reação do Liverpool veio tarde demais. O time venceu, porém a combinação de resultados eliminou o time. Fazia tempo que o Liverpool não fazia uma aparição tão fraca num torneio. Resta a Europa League.

Grupo F:

Barcelona 2×0 Internazionale: Piqué e Pedro foram os autores dos gols que deram a vitória ao Barça. A Inter apenas assistiu e agora precisa reagir na última rodada, senão será mais um grande a ficar de fora.

Rubin 0×0 Dynamo: empate frio em Moscou. Porém, esse resultado permite que ambas equipes ainda tenhamchances reais de vaga. O Barça tem 8 pontos, a Inter e o Rubin estão com 6 e o Dynamo tem 5. Para o grupo que era barbada…

Grupo G:

Sevilla 0×1 Unirea: jogando sem pressão, o Sevilla vacilou e perdeu a invencibilidade. Quem agradece é o time romeno, que assume a segunda posição e pode deixar o Suttugart de fora da briga.

Rangers 0×2 Stuttgart: outra derrota do fraquíssimo time escocês. O Stuttgart aproveitou e não marcou bobeira. Agora, na última rodada, os alemães disputam a vaga contra o Unirea.

Grupo H:

AZ Alkmaar 0×0 Olympiacos: empate sem graça que manteve a disputa da segunda vaga ainda viva para os gregos. O AZ está eliminado. 

Arsenal 2×0 Standard: boa vitória do time inglês, que disparou na ponta. Os gols foram feitos por Nasri e Denilson.

Classificados: Bordeaux, Manchester, Chelsea, Porto, Fiorentina, Lyon, Sevilla e Arsenal. Restam metade das vagas para serem definidas na última rodada.

As grandes decepções até o momento são Liverpool, Atlético de Madrid, Internazionale, Juve e Bayern. A surpresa muito grata fica por conta de Fiorentina e Bordeaux.

Il Viola gira ormai per l’Europa da protagonista e chi l’avrebbe mai detto guardando alla Champions League della Fiorentina l’anno scorso? Invece Prandelli e la sua banda se la sono riconquistata passo passo. Lo scorso campionato, tra mille difficoltà, rosicchiando punto dopo punto per vincere un’altra chance. Il biglietto staccato col preliminare che fa iniziare prestissimo la stagione, poi le prime tappe, tutte sofferte, tutte meritate, per un girone Champions che significa qualificazione con un turno d’anticipo.

La prima tappa è a Lione dove la Fiorentina rischia di ritrovare la propria nemesi. I francesi forti e scorretti vengono soccorsi dall’arbitro che condanna ingiustamente i Viola a giocare in dieci senza il puntero Gilardino. Eppure la Fiorentina non merita la sconfitta, anzi. Il pericolo è disunirsi, amareggiarsi, soccombere ad una competizione fatta per le squadre più forti ed esperte.

Ed ecco la notte dei reds, a Firenze arriva una corazzata, blasonata e potente. Il Liverpool che scende in riva all’Arno con la Fiorentina ancora orfana del suo bomber squalificato. Prandelli reinventa la squadra e la dà in mano a ragazzi come Jovetic, Montolivo, Mutu e tutta la bella compagnia di Spuma. E’ l’apoteosi, è la commozione, è la una delle storie più belle del pallone, la piccola che batte la grande. Meritando per giunta.

Dove i Viola non possono sbagliare è a Budapest contro la matricola Debrecen. Eppure sono proprio quelle le gare più difficili, quando non puoi fallire il colpo. Allo stadio c’è mezza Ungheria e il Debrecen, trascinato dal suo pubblico, segna subito. La Fiorentina non si scompone, reagisce da squadra adulta e con un doppio colpo si riporta avanti. La storia di quella gara incredibile non finisce così, ma alla fine, grazie ad un Mutu eccezionale, a Firenze arrivano i tre punti. Gli stessi conquistati al ritorno da una Fiorentina che fa il suo dovere fino in fondo.

Si arriva alla notte del match point, con la città impavesata di Viola, con la voglia di scrivere la storia e piangere di gioia tutti assieme. Al Franchi arriva ancora la bestia nera, il Lione che non si riesce a battere. La Fiorentina è falcidiata dalle assenze. Soffre per la rosa decimata e rosica per la sconfitta patita in campionato col Parma. Prandelli ci mette ancora una volta del suo e ridiegna l’unidici. La Fiorentina getta il cuore oltre l’ostacolo non rinunciando a confezionare una partita di qualità ricca di occasioni. Ma a segno va una sola volta e, nel finale convulso, tocca a Frey dimostrare a tutta Europa quanto è scemo il ct francese Domenech.

Adesso s’andrà a Liverpool con lo spirito goliardico e sereno dei ragazzini, una puntatina al Cavern in omaggio ai Beatles. Poi ad Anfield per inscenare coi già eliminati inglesi una bella partita di calcio che ha gran fascino, ma nulla vale. La Fiorentina infatti ha già staccato il biglietto vincente per il prossimo turno. Firenze gode e sogna. Dice grazie ai suoi ragazzi con la maglia Viola indosso e, sommessamente per ora, mormora quasi incredula…

Ma come siamo belli!!!

Grupo A:

Girondins 2 – Juventus 0: los franceses son la sorpresa del grupo. Bajaron al Bayern y ahora a la Juve que buscaba asegurarse la clasificación. El Girondins ya está clasificado como primero del grupo.

Bayern Munich 1 – Maccabi Haifa 0: el Bayern sigue con vida, y no en le Europe League, gracias al Girondins. Van Gaal tiene menos apoyo que Maradona en la FIFA. El Maccabi sigue sin sumar un solo punto.

Grupo B:

CSKA Moscú 2 – Wolfsburgo 1: partido de equipos irregulares. Los moscovitas, desde hace varias semanas sin Juande, ya estrenaron a su tercer DT en Champions. Los alemanes siguen a los tumbos, extrañando a Diego. Todavía los dos tienen chances de clasificar.

Manchester United 0 – Beksitas 1: una de las sorpresas de la jornada, y hasta me animo a decir que de la etapa de grupos. ¿QUé le pasa al Manchester? ¿Sufre de la ida de Cristiano Ronaldo?

Grupo C:

Milan 1 – O. Marsella 1: Lucho Gonzáles, ese jugador con el pecho helado, con su gol permite que no dan nada por perdido. El Milan se la juega en su visita al Zúrich.

Real Madrid 1 – Zurich: el partido se podría resumir en dar solamente el resultado y la vuelta de Cristiano Ronaldo. Después, nada más, como lo del Madrid durante toda esta temporada.

Grupo D:

Oporto 0 – Chelsea 1: no se jugaban nada, y dentro de esa nada, Anelka clavó un lindo cabezazo.

Apoel Nicosia 1 – Atlético de Madrid 1: otros dos equipos que no se jugaban nada, y no jugaron a nada.

Grupo E:

Debrecen 0 – Liverpool 1: la gran sorpresa (decepción) de la etapa de grupos, salvo que el Madrid no llegue a octavos. A pesar de la victoria, los de Benítez van a jugar la Europa League.

Fiorentina 1 – O. Lyon 0: una de las sorpresas es la Fiore que ya está en octavos. Los franceses ya son figura repetida pasando la etapa de grupo, aunque hasta ahí llegan.

Grupo F:

Barcelona 2 – Inter 0: la máquina de fútbol contra… ¿Jugó el Inter?

Rubin Kazan 0 – Dinamo Kiev 0: un empate que agrega emoción al grupo. Todos tienen chances de clasificar.

Grupo G:

Unirea 1 – Sevilla 0: victoria que sirvió para pelearla hasta la última jornada. El Sevilla se quedó con las ganas de asegurarse el primer puesto.

Rangers 0 – Stuttgart 2: era un resultado cantado, ya que el paso de los Rangers por la Champions es meramente anecdótico.

Grupo H:

Arsenal 2 – Standard Lieja 0: los gunners se aseguraron la primera plaza.

AZ Alkmaar 0 – Olympiakos 0: los del AZ se aseguraron la última posición.

Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League last night despite winning their match against Debrecen in the Hungarian capital.French international David Ngog’s first half strike put the Reds ahead of Debrecen in the must-win group-stage match. Liverpool, who won the Champions League in 2005 and were runners-up two years ago, needed to not only win their match but also needed Lyon to beat Fiorentina order to reach the Final 16 for the knock-out stages of the competition.

Unfortunately for the Reds, Fiorentina beat Lyon 1-0 in their match in Tuscany, ensuring that Fiorentina progressed at Liverpool’s expense. This is the first time in six years that Liverpool has failed to make it past the group stages of the European competition. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was left ruing the late goals conceded by his team against Lyon. They had been beaten 2-1 by the French champions at Anfield before drawing 1-1 at the Stade Gerland.

“It was our own fault in the end, the late goals we have conceded along the way have cost us,” said Benitez. “We have been so good in the last few years that maybe people think it is easy to qualify in all competitions. You have to be disappointed. We knew we had to win and we did. We can’t change what happened in the other match, but at least we did our job. If you look at the games, two late goals made a massive difference.”

Liverpool is expected to suffer a budgetary shortfall of about £2.4m for this season as a consequence of their group exit and this could be made worse if they continue their run of bad form in the Premier League and  fail to finish in the top four, adding another £10m loss. This would have a significant impact on the asking price of £100m for a 25% stake in Liverpool, which the owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are looking to sell.

Rafael Benitez, however, played down the financial aspect of failing to progress to the knock-out stage.”

“You have a budget at the beginning of the season and it assumes that we have qualified for the group stages of the Champions League. We did this. Two or three more games maybe, in terms of money, won’t make such a big difference. The main thing for us is to finish in the top four and to be in the Champions League group stages again next year”, said the Liverpool manager.

Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow, insisted that Liverpool could withstand the financial impact of the early elimiation and added that Rafael Benitez’s position as Liverpool manager will not be undermined by Champions League exit.

Christian Purslow said, “This will have no bearing on Rafa whatsoever. He signed a new five-year deal four months ago and in those terms he is four months into a five-year journey. You don’t deviate from long‑term plans for people and the way to take the club to the next level because of two late goals against Lyon, and that’s what it boils down to.”

Liverpool will now be playing in the newly formed Europa League with the likes of Valencia, Benfica and neighbours Everton.

Liverpool plays crucial Merseyside derby match at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday.

Con la vista puesta en el Camp Nou, el Inter visitaba al Bolonia en el calcio y los de Mourinho no tuvieron problema en relegar a su rival. Además, típico del técnico portugués, sólo reservó a Etoo para la Champions. Milito fue el primero en conseguir un tanto, pero al minuto empató Zalayeta, aunque antes del descanso se adelantaron los interistas de nuevo por medio de Balotelli. En la segunda parte el argentino Cambiasso remató el encuentro.

A cinco puntos del Inter sigue la Juventus que esta jornada ganó por la mínima al Udinese. Una Juve donde cada vez juega menos Del Piero, que ya el año pasado luchó contra la juventud de Giovinco, y que este se ha encontrado con Diego. Grosso fue el único jugador marcó.

El Cagliari hizo sudar al Milan en San Siro, pero al final los rossoneros se llevaron los tres puntos. La acción del partido comenzó pronto con el gol del Seedorf a los cinco minutos, que empató Matri cuatro minutos después. Luego se adelantaron los visitantes por medio de Lazzari, pero antes del descanso se daba la vuelta al marcador por medio de Borriello y Pato. Ya en la segunda mitad hubo tiempo para los goles de Ronaldinho y Nene.

La Sampdoria rompió una racha de tres partidos sin ganar, que le ha relegado al cuarto puesto, imponiéndose en el Luigi Ferraris al Chievo Verona. Los de Del Neri se adelantaron por medio de Rossi, luego marcó Pazzini y Mantovani acercó distancias a diez minutos del final.

Al comienzo del post escribía que el Inter tenía puesta la vista en la máxima competición continental y me da que la Fiorentina también lo hizo. Los violas se vieron sorprendidos por un Parma que se consolida como la revelación del campeonato. El partido empezó de cara para la Fiore con un gol de Gilardino pero antes del descanso empató Amoruso. En la segunda parte se adelantarían los de Guidolin con un gol de Bojinov, que empató Gilardino, aunque todavía quedaba el gol de Lanzafame, a la postre definitivo.

Fue una noche de ensueño. En el minuto 28 el “Loco”, Juan Vargas, marcó un gol de penal sancionado  por el juez portugués Olegário Benquerená por falta del francés Lamine Gassama contra el italiano Marco Marchionni.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOL, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOL, se escuchaba por todo el estadio. Sonrisas y aplausos por parte de la hinchada del Fiorentina  para el “Loco”  en agradecimiento a la clasificación.

Al final del partido, la guardia de honor para despedir a los rivales derrotados, tuvo como broche de oro el abrazo interminable entre Vargas y el portero Frey, y encima suyo flameando una bandera gigante del “Loco” con su imagen apuntando como si sus manos fueran una pistola. Apuntaban al título de la Champions.

“Sorry old boy, washing my hair that night”. Am I talking here about Fiorentina’s fans not being bothered to travel to Anfield for a meaningless game with Liverpool but saving their cash for a more cheerful Christmas? No, not really.

What a difference two months can make. When UEFA Champions League group stage caravan was ready to go, at the end of september, there were inevitable mass-media comments based on false assumptions that the “predictability of outcomes” and “the same sense of inertia enveloping the bloated early rounds” will generate a lack of interest and subsequently empty seats around the grounds, “as there is no obvious reason to desert the shampoo anywhere on the continent” in these autumn evenings apart from some big old clashes such as Juventus – Bayern, AC Milan – Real Madrid or Barcelona – Inter. I’ve cited from an oppinion going on the lines of Michel Platini’s alleged misjudgement to mix Europe’s finest, the cream of the elite, with some no-hopers.

Never mind the sarcasm which peppered the comment, “You can imagine the look on Jose Mourinho’s face when Inter were drawn in the same group as Rubin Kazan”, but some might argue that the chance itself for lesser clubs to face giants of the game is a step up on the ladder. The minnows can improve only by playing against the best in the trade.

And others might not be so imaginative yet they’ve noticed Pep Guardiola’s face when the current UEFA Champions League holders were defeated on Camp Nou by Gokdeniz Karadeniz 73rd minute strike. It was 2-1 for Rubin in Barcelona. Actually, not that much of a shock, after a 0-0 draw in Kazan, when the Russian champion was already sprinting towards back to back domestic titles.

It’s well documented the fact that Russian clubs take advantage on their day from the unusual spring-autumn format of the season. Only on this basis and the champions of the EURO 2008 semifinalist shouldn’t have been taken for granted. Not to mention their clubs resurgence in UEFA Cup, which was won by CSKA Moscow and Zenit Sankt Petersburg in 2005 and 2008 respectivelly. That’s a harvest double the amount of England’s, triumphant in UEFA Cup in the last 25 years only through Liverpool, in 2001, but this record can be adjusted in may, in Hamburg, with The Reds derailed from glamorous  UEFA Champions League to its poorer renamed cousin, UEFA Europa League. 

The shampoo will be deserted on wednesday the 9th of december in favour of a journey to San Siro for an exciting Inter – Rubin Kazan decider, with Jose Mourinho’s men and Karadeniz et co equal on points. What can you ask for more? Goliath hosting David and not the other way round, another inconvenience for Europe’s finest, through the eyes of western commentators, to have to pull their alike extraterestrial buses in some “Eastern European backwater”. Although there are human beings living and buying football tickets even there, apparently it seems a stage not glitzy enough for the uber-entities.

It was often the case – and a repeat scenario won’t be any surprise - that the bigger clubs prevailed despite a stuttering start or a poor form altogether in the group stage. The smart money will be on Jose Mourinho’s coat and hairstyle to be admired on the glamorous stage as well in spring but it has to be pointed out that no team is by any means qualified yet from this supposedly inbalanced group. And that says a lot about minnows’ progress. A 2-2 draw as Inter made in Milano against Dinamo Kiyv will do though for the Italian champions.   

 And who would have imagined that Fiorentina Firenze will go through the group stage for the first time in its history at the expense of a seasoned Liverpool side? Or who would have thought that unknown Unirea Urziceni will shatter Glasgow Rangers on Ibrox Park with a 4-1 which contributed to the elimination of Scotland’s champions before the last group games were played?

These are some questions to ponder about. The shampoo will be in use in Glasgow when Gers will travel to Seville for an academic outing against the top of the group Andalucians. Full credit to Dan Petrescu, once a versatile player not only for Chelsea, now a capable manager providing an answer in his own way to another ironic arrow targeting Michel Platini. The commentator was asking if the name of Urziceni is the acceptable contraction…

Well, it’s just a name and nothing else, no better or worse than Stuttgart. Urzica is a plant, a stinging nettle, and has therapeutic values. While Platini’s ideals, to evolve the game on the virtues of solidarity and universality, mentioned when he took helm of UEFA in january 2007, seem already to bear fruit. Or may be some observers discomfort is coming from the president’s suggestion that 4 representatives for England or Spain might be a bit too much and that indebted clubs might end one day thrown out of the competition.

Some might say that I’m very harsh and punitive on some wrong predictions. But I’ll argue that it’s not about some wild results that unexpectedly occured, say AC Milan – Zurich 0-1, Atletico Madrid – Apoel Nicosia 0-0, Bayern Munich – Bordeaux 0-2 or even Manchester United – CSKA Moscow 3-3, given that just an owngoal in the 93rd minute have undone the 2005 UEFA Cup winners at Old Trafford, where Besiktas has won as well, but it’s about the concept of rightly mixing in the group stage the mighty and powerful with some new faces.

Enough knock-out stages will then follow for the big clubs to grace the loftier stratospheres of the competition. But as New Zealand, Honduras or North Korea sneaked through in the group stages of 2010 World Cup final, so UEFA Champions League can do with a few underdogs. No harm but – as it was proved – some excitement.

And isn’t it ironic that it went full circle, if it is to quote again the commentary: “[...] another fixture to get hearts pumping; Unirea Urziceni, of Romania, versus, VFB Stuttgart”. You bet it is. Nothing else than a win will do for Die Schwaben to go through. And by the way, the club’s name is correctly spelled with f and not F. Verein fur Bewegungsspiele Stuttgart 1893 e.V.

Some minnows proved that Platini’s competition format has its merits and it’s just fair to point out that a former European champion both at club and national level, with Juventus Torino and France, who won as well both domestic competitions in Italy and his native country, winning Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Supercup and Intercontinental Cup among other trophees, might be more of a visionary with the game’s best interests at heart than some pundits can imagine.

Will Jose Mourinho succeed against Rubin? Or will he find the going as tough as Rafael Benitez did with Liverpool?

While being here and casting an eye on the backwater of Eastern Europe, just one more point to make. It’s surprising to say and admit that for all their travel, some football writers must lack some geography knowledge.  Why I’m saying this? The same error is repeated for decades, mistakingly including footballing nations as say Czech Republic or Hungary, you name them, in… Eastern Europe.

Well, it’s a well known fact even at kindergarten in mainland Europe that the continent’s eastern border consists of Ural Mountains, at meridian 60 E, which splits the Russian Federation into two: the European Russia and the Asian Russia. Take any map and you’ll notice that European Russian Federation is extremely wide, occupying the whole eastern front of the continent. That’s Eastern Europe…

Which leaves the lot, Czech Republic et all, nowhere else but in Central Europe. The meridians are giving an even more accurate view of what’s what in terms of positioning on our continent’s map, be it a footballing one or not. The 60 degrees E meridian is roughly where Urals are stretching from north to south, while the 30 degrees E meridian cuts across eastern Finland, Belarus and Ukraine. Meridian O passes Greenwich.

So how comes that Slavia or Sparta Prague, bang on the western side of 15 degrees E meridian, so much closer to London than to Moscow, are… eastern European clubs? It defies everything: maps, geography, logic, truth…

To emphasise the aforementioned point about the imbalance of power in the elitist Champions League, the columnist choose poor Unirea Urziceni as a perfect “example”, comparing David with mighty Real Madrid. Well, geographically wise, the same error… Urziceni, the town surprisingly holding the current domestic national title in Romania, even being in eastern Romania, is actually bang in central Europe, whichever way you want to study the map of real Europe, known at kindergarten. Somewhere at mid distance between the western points of say Ireland and Portugal and the Urals.

Unirea Urziceni, this unknown quantity with an unpronouncable name, was deemed as an unworthy opponent for the big and powerful, with the stroke of a keyboard. It took decades for minor Romanian outfits to break the horrendous state controlled hijacking of national football, with Steaua and Dinamo the big bullies on the scene. CFR Cluj made history last year by winning the title, despite all the machinations of Steaua. Cluj-Napoca, a provincial city from Transylvania, have defied the structures of power.

Unirea Urziceni followed the trend and, from nowhere, finished on top, due to Dan Petrescu’s managerial knowhow. His skills honed in Poland, at Wisla Krakow, the former Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea London full back hit the jackpot by bringing the title in a place the size of Slough. Actually, I’m exaggerating, as Slough is quite big.

Instead of recognizing the amazing shift of power in Romanian football, where it seems that truth starts to prevail and Steaua and Dinamo find it harder and harder to control through corruption, sleaze and influence, some are questioning, placing in imaginary boxes and taking the mickey out of the newborn stars. And I say stars but they might be only comets, shining just for a while. It’s their moment, so why to pick them as “examples” in this infinite talk about the Champions League format moulded by Platini!? Because it’s convenient for some…

The simple truth is that Urziceni is not in eastern Europe, whateversome Western Europeans want to believe, and that Unirea did a wonderful job in following the footsteps of another minnow, CFR Cluj Napoca. A few more like them and we’ll escape the plague of associating Romanian football with the names of Steaua and Dinamo. 

I just assume that if Steaua would have won the title and represent Romania in Champions League, it wouldn’t have been picked as an “example” in the explanation about the imbalance of power in the group stages of the European elite.  Just because Steaua won the old European Cup in ‘86 with players cherrypicked from various minnows, some are assuming that it must be a powerful enough entity to be worthy of a home and away double with Real Madrid. Well, Olympique Lyonnais visited Bucharest recently and showed the real difference in power.

And if one day Steaua will pay even without interest the unpaid transfer sums for players… recruited in those days in the Army, then the mighty and powerful of the Iron Curtain block will be bankrupt and buried, while the “minnows” derided now will empower themselves at least for the merit of bringing talents to the footballing world.

And please don’t show to anybody at Steaua or Dinamo the UEFA Champions League group table with Urziceni in second place, with 8 points. Spare them of blushing for the 5 points gathered all together, with 3 goals scored and 12 conceded, in the eight games played in UEFA Europa League groups, scratching the bottom…

With Liverpool majestically exiting the Champions League, Rafa and his band of injured and disappointed footballers will feel the pressure at home from the fans and the owners alike. There has been enough Rafa bashing in our blogs and I would not like to continue on that, as there is no point. Where is the saviour, Aquiliani? He played precisely 1 minute and 25 seconds replacing Gerrard.

The Liverpool Managing Director coming out bravely and suggested that Rafa’s job is safe. Winning the premier league from this stage would be a mammoth exercise for this team, unless they reinforce bigtime in the January window. But still that would need a top team like Chelsea or maybe Manchester United losing points. And for anymore losses in the premier league, the fans are going to get onto Rafa’s nerves. The door to Madrid is always open and it might be sooner than expected for him.

Liverpool can get dragged onto Europa League and that might spell further trouble to the League aspirations. Liverpool honestly doesn’t look like having a quality bench which can help them fight it out in 2 tournaments.  Amen.

So after the 5th round of matches for half the groups, Fiorentina follow Lyon from Group E and Arsenal qualified from Group H.

The big news out of Tuesday’s contests is that Liverpool has crashed out in the group stage for the first time in six years.  Despite the fact that the Reds notched a 1-0 win over Debrecen, Fiorentina managed a win over Lyon to book their spot in the knockout stage.  Here’s hoping Liverpool will be able to do some good things in the Europa League. Arsenal joined Fiorentina in the knockout stage with a 2-0 win over Standard, while Barcelona helped their cause greatly with a 2-0 win over Inter Milan.

La Fiorentina agli ottavi di Champions League.

A questo punto pretendiamo che il Parma si giochi la qualificazione alla prossima massima competizione europea seriamente e fino alla fine, perchè noi non siamo inferiori alla Fiorentina e ci pare che questa che fino a sabato pomeriggio era solo una nostra opinione sia anche stata scientificamente dimostrata.

Ma poi quanto sono ridicoli Prandelli e Gabriele Pin con quegli orrendi maglioncini viola a collo alto? Che eleganza, che stile…

Agli ottavi Champions League forse si qualificherà anche la temibilissima Unirea Urziceni … crediamo sia proprio giunto il momento di tornare in Europa…

O Liverpool não ganha um Campeonato Inglês desde 1990. Isso significa que o time ainda não conquistou sequer uma Premier League, competição estabelecida em 1992 para definir o campeão nacional na Inglaterra. É um jejum terrível para os Reds.

Apesar disso, o time foi campeão da Liga dos Campeões em 2005 e tem feitos boas campanhas nos últimos anos nesse campeonato continental. Esse é o grande mérito de Rafa Benítez, técnico do time há 5 anos. O problema dele é que agora esse crédito acabou.

O time foi eliminado na primeira fase da Liga de 2009/2010 em um grupo com adversários mais modestos – Fiorentina e Lyon. O título inglês também está distante, já que o Chelsea é o favorito absoluto atualmente. Será que não é a hora de mudar de técnico?

Muitos vão dizer que a culpa não é dele, já que o time é realmente fraco. Concordo em partes, mas é preciso lembrar que Benítez tem muita responsabilidade na montagem desse elenco tão deficiente. Foi ele que, muitas vezes, indicou ou aprovou tantos jogadores medianos que recheiam o time, como Riera, Benayoun, Babel, N’gog e outros.

Outra justificativa que pode surgir vem por causa do excesso de lesões nesse começo de temporada. Dos essenciais Fernando Torres e Gerrard aos bons coadjuvantes Fábio Aurelio, Aquilani e Glen Johnson, todos se machucaram recentemente. O que só prova o que foi dito acima: as peças de reposição deveriam ter sido melhor indicadas pelo técnico.

Rafa Benítez não é um mau treinador. Longe disso. Só deveria entender que já fez o que pôde pelo Liverpool. E não foi pouco, vale lembrar. Só que a diretoria já garantiu que ele vai ficar. Uma pena.

Era a hora do time começar a se preparar para 2010. A disputa na Liga Europa deveria ser esquecida e assim o time começaria um planejamento para pelo menos acabar com o incômodo jejum em seus territórios. Será que Benítez é o homem certo para comandar isso? Não acredito.

Alla faccia di tutte le maglie a striscie…

A Londra i tifosi andranno a farsi un giro al Cavern, il mitico luogo dove suonavano i Beatles, e non a tremare per una partita decisiva. Vogliamo mettere la soddisfazione ?

Partita perfetta per 80 minuti. Solo gli ultimi 10 minuti il Lione ci ha messo veramente ai paletti rischiando almeno 2 volte seriamente di pareggiare, ma l’ottimo Frey ha chiuso la porta del garage…

Primo tempo perfetto dove il 2-0 sarebbe stato perfino stretto.

Secondo tempo intelligente a dosare le energie che giocoforza, vista le assenze, cominciano a mancare a diversi giocatori.

Il Lione è venuto a Firenze tutt’altro che remissivo e, specialmente nel finale di partita, puntavano chiaramente alla vittoria del girone.

Ma la squadra di Prandelli si è rivelata molto rocciosa; la Fiorentina 2009-2010 è una squadra che (ahimè) al completo può fare molto molto bene e con un paio di rincalzi robusti in panchina avrebbe potuto puntare anche al 2ndo posto in Campionato (salvo aggiustamenti fatti in corso d’opera dalle giubbe nere…).

Ora, godiamoci brevemente l’euforia Champions, ma poi fino a Natale concentrati totalmente sul Campionato, perchè vorremmo rivedere la Fiorentina in Champions anche il prossimo anno…ci vorrebbe un filotto di 3-4 partite vittoriose in modo da puntellare il 4-5 posto e lanciare lo sprint a primavera…

E domenica c’è l’Inter…saranno come tori davanti al drappo rosso dopo la partita di ieri sera…

Au terme d’un match qu’elle aura souvent maîtrisé , la Fiorentina s’est imposée devant Lyon , qui subit sa première défaite en 5 matchs européens cette saison . Liverpool termine troisième et ira en Europa Ligue …

Ça y est ! Les Florentins disputeront pour la première fois de leur histoire  les huitièmes de finales d’une ligue des Champions . Une consécration pour cette équipe , emmenée par Alberto Gilardino et Adrian Mutu ( absent ce soir )  . Face à l’Ol , les joueurs de Florence prenaient d’assaut les cages de Lloris . 2 poteaux et un Ol sous l’eau , l’ascendant avait d’ores et déjà penché après le premier quart d’heure de jeu . Malgré tout, les coéquipiers de Govou n’abdiquaient pas et tentaient tant que possible de repartir vers l’avant . Les deux équipes mettaient en place peu à peu un certain système tactique. Du côté Lyonnais, on alignait un 4-3-3 où Makoun faisait souvent office de relayeur, tandis qu’ à Florence, un 4-3-2-1 était au rendez vous au dépend duquel, Santana le milieu Argentin de 28 ans, se montrait omniprésent . A la 30 ème minute, Marchionni s’infiltrait dans la surface des Gones, et , suite à une faute de Cissokho sur le milieu droit Florentin, l’arbitre sifflait pénalty . Lloris ne put cependant rien faire, Vagras transformé le penalty, et la Fiorentina était à ce moment là du match, qualifiée pour les hutièmes de finales de cette ligue des Champions, avec au passage, la 1ère place du groupe dans la poche … Après l’ouverture du score, les joueurs de Florence reprenaient de plus belle leurs assauts dans les 22 mètres d’une équipe Lyonnaise, qui ne parvenait pas à trouver les failles de la Viola, très bien en place et jouant très haut …

Pourtant vicorieux au match aller, les Lyonnais n'ont pas trouvé les clés face à la Viola et concède donc leur première défaite Européenne cette saison ... ( Source : Football365.fr )

En seconde période, Puel se devait de re-motiver ses troupes pour faire sauter le verrou Florentin, dont seul Frey avait les clés . Les Lyonnais reprenaient le match avec de meilleures ambitions… insuffisantes néanmoins pour ralentir l’équipe Florentine, impressionnante hier soir . La Viola qui d’ailleurs aurait pu enfoncer le clou à la 60 ème minute, mais la frappe de Gilardino frôlait le montant droit d’Hugo Lloris . Lyon ne trouvait pas la solution soit, mais montrait un tout autre visage que celui en première période . Ce dernier pouvait compter sur son jeune défenseur, mais talentueux, Aly Cissokoh qui taclait magnifiquement bien Montolivo, seul aux 16 mètres face à Lloris . Impuissants, les Lyonnais avaient besoin de sang neuf pour rester dans le match . Lisandro,  Ederson et Delgado remplaçaient respectivement Bastos, Gomis et Govou . L’attaque Lyonnaise avait donc de nouvelles jambes mais il ne lui restait que 15 minutes pour combler ce désavantage au tableau d’affichage . Peu à peu les Florentins , fatigués, laissaient plus d’espaces aux Gones, dont le jeu devenait plus fluide … Makoun puis Lisandro pensaient tenir la réduction du score, mais se heurtaient à un grand Frey . Une dernière parade du gardien, le sifflement de l’arbitre, et le Stade Artemio Franchi pouvait enfin savourer sa qualification, acquise à la régulière …

Lyon repart chez lui sans points, mais ce match n’aura eu de conséquences uniquement sur la première place du groupe, qui pour l’instant est entre les mains de la Viola . Ayons de même une pensée pour Liverpool, troisième , qui jouera l’Europe un ton plus bas cette saison, en Europa Ligue .

Gago lascerà la Casa Blanca?

Fernando Gago sarebbe il primo nome appuntato sulla lista della spesa invernale di Corvino.
Ancora molto calda, quindi, la pista Madrid-Firenze.

Dopo i recenti rumors che volevano i Viola tornati alla carica per Drenthe arriva la voce di un interessamento dei Della Valle per il volante di Ciudadela. Voci di una non meglio precisata fonte spagnola riportata dalla testata giornalistica Violanews.com definisce come “molto ben avviato” il contatto tra i dirigenti fiorentini e quelli della Casa Blanca.
Secondo quanto si dice da più parti, insomma, sarebbe l’ex bochense il giocatore che Corvino ed il suo staff puntano per rinforzare la rosa della Fiorentina. Il giocatore che, insomma, sarà deputato a sostituire Felipe Melo, partito la scorsa estate in direzione Torino.

Una cosa è certa: in Spagna si dicono piuttosto sicuri che, anche complice il Mondiale sudafricano che si disputerà a fine stagione, la prossima sessione invernale di calciomercato vedrà aprire una sorta di supermarket madridista.
Molti sarebbero infatti i giocatori a tutt’oggi in forza alle Merengue che scontenti della propria posizione chiederebbero di poter lasciare Madrid per trovare una squadra in cui scendere in campo con continuità potendosi così giocare in sei mesi le loro residue chance mondiali.

Difficile comunque, per ovvi motivi, che possano essere tutti accontentati: il Real non può certo far partire tutti per poi trovarsi con una rosa ridotta all’osso che non gli permetta di concorrere su più fronti.

Gago, comunque, sembrerebbe ben deciso nel voler lasciare Madrid. In questa stagione, infatti, è stato utilizzato in campionato dal primo minuto in due sole occasioni, subentrando altre due volte a partita in corso. Quattro presenze su di un totale di undici partite disputate non sono certo un bottino accettabile per un giocatore del suo calibro.
A rincarare la dose, poi, lo scarso utilizzo in Champions League, dove ha visto il campo dal primo minuto in una sola occasione.

Una sorta di mini tragedia sportiva per un ragazzo che a 23 anni non è ancora riuscito a sbocciare come ci aspettava, perdendo quindi posti su posti nelle gerarchie madridiste. Oggi tutto è, infatti, fuorché nel giro dei titolari.

Il Sudafrica, però, è un dolce miraggio, un sogno che nemmeno chi sta passando questi mesi a svernare in panchina non vuol smettere di coltivare.
Fernando sa bene, però, che per poter essere preso in considerazione da Maradona non può accontentarsi di giocare una decina di partite in tutta la stagione: deve riuscire a trovare una soluzione, possibilmente di alto livello, nella quale poter trovare il campo con continuità. Perché non sarà certo il fatto di essere sceso in campo in 14 occasioni nel corso delle qualificazioni al Mondiale che potrà salvarlo dall’essere escluso dai 23 che partiranno per l’Africa Meridionale qualora non riuscirà a guadagnarsi in questi pochi mesi la convocazione grazie alle sue prestazioni ottenute con il proprio club.

Gago è pronto a lasciare Madrid pur di potersi giocare fino in fondo le sue chance mondiali

Proprio in questo senso la Fiorentina, che ha proprio oggi ottenuto il pass per gli ottavi di finali di Champions League, potrebbe fare al caso suo.
Un giocatore del suo talento, infatti, non dovrebbe fare eccessiva fatica a trovare non dico un posto da titolare fisso ma comunque ampio spazio in una rotazione tra un numero comunque ristretto di giocatori.
Inoltre pur non potendo giocare in Champions, Gago farebbe comunque parte di una delle squadre che compongono oggi l’elite del panorama europeo e che, al di là di tutto, è stabilmente, negli ultimi anni, tra i top club del nostro campionato.

Una soluzione più che accettabile, insomma, per un ragazzo che ha assoluto bisogno di ritrovare continuità di gioco e di rendimento.

Questo, quindi, sarebbe il piano di Corvino: a gennaio il giocatore verrebbe richiesto in prestito oneroso con contratto pagato dalla propria società ed inserimento di una clausola che possa garantirne il riscatto al termine della stagione ad un prezzo già fissato.
Il D.S. Viola, insomma, vorrebbe concludere l’affare con le stesse modalità proposte per l’acquisto di Drenthe. Quest’estate con l’olandese andò male ed il giocatore non si mosse da Madrid, vedremo come andrà invece quest’inverno col regista Albiceleste.

Non sarebbero i Viola, comunque, l’unica società interessata al giocatore.
E se per Ben Arfa, come abbiamo visto, pare non si stia muovendo nessuna italiana per Gago sono invece i nostri club ad essere in pole position. Oltre alla Fiorentina, infatti, anche le tre big della nostra Serie A (Inter, Juventus e Milan), starebbero pensando a lui.
L’unico interesse che potrebbe trasformarsi in offerta concreta, comunque, pare proprio essere quello dei Della Valle.

A tal proposito Zoran Vekic, agente del giocatore, ha così commentato – a Calciomercato.it – una situazione definita in evoluzione: “E’ vero, il giocatore piace in Italia ma fino ad ora non sono stato contattato ufficialmente da nessuna squadra. Da qui a gennaio può presentarsi qualche possibilità, ma tutto dipende dal Real Madrid con cui ha un contratto fino al 2013. E fin quando non ci comunica che vuole cederlo noi non ci muoveremo”.

Gago sbarcherà a Firenze?

Chiara la dichiarazione d’intenti arrivata dall’entourage del giocatore: leggendo tra le righe, infatti, si può capire come la disponibilità a lasciare Madrid ci sarebbe tutta, anche se c’è un contratto da rispettare ed è quindi giusto e doveroso che le società interessate all’acquisto di Fernando contattino il Real mostrando loro le proprie offerte.

Nel corso dei prossimi due mesi, quindi, vedremo come si svilupperà anche questa situazione.
Finirà davvero a Firenze questo volante argentino che ha passato undici stagioni tesserato per gli Xeneizes prima di raggiungere Madrid?

É tudo verdadeiramente verdade absoluta. Ok, sem exageros. Mas eu tenho que expressar minha felicidade por mais essa conquista da Fiorentina. Orgulho para o povo de Firenze.

Sem rodeios, a Viola venceu o Lyon por 1 a 0 com gol do peruano Vargas, de pênalti, e garantiu a vaga para as oitavas de final da Liga dos Campeões – bye bye, Liverpool. Um sonho que se tornou realidade.

A Fiorentina é o primeiro time italiano classificado para as oitavas. Eu acompanhei o momento difícil que essa torcida passou há algum tempo com o falimento do clube. Hoje um passado distante.

Porque o que vale agora é o sentimento de dever cumprido. Não sei se vai passar das oitavas e nem vamos falar sobre isso agora. A primeira etapa foi ultrapassada com uma rodada de antecedência, com méritos.

Parabéns aos jogadores, mas, sobretudo, ao técnico Cesare Prandelli. Um super treinador, uma grande pessoa e um homem de alma. “A partir de hoje queremos começar a escrever uma nova história para a Fiorentina”, disse Prandelli.

É permitido sonhar. Tudo isso fruto de um trabalho muito bem feito pela família Della Valle e executado por Pantaleo Corvino. “É o melhor momento da minha carreira”, concluiu Prandelli.

Ele merece. A Viola merece. Os torcedores merecem. O dia em Firenze foi atípico: só se falou no jogo. Hoje, ao entrar num site sobre a Fiorentina ou algum jornal da região, o dia 24 de novembro de 2009 já está marcado por uma conquista. E eles querem mais. Então, andiamo, Viola… 

A Inter? Ah, Inter…
Eu chutei no Twitter: Barcelona 1 x 2 Internazionale. Só me esqueci que era um jogo da Liga dos Campeões. Incrível como o time nerazzurro tem atuações muito abaixo das expectativas nessa competição. Guardiola nem precisou usar Ibrahimovic e Messi.

Já o time nerazzurro tem a sorte de precisar apenas de suas forças para passar de fase. Sorte? Bom, parece que só isso mesmo pra Inter ir bem, porque a cada dia que passa a equipe prova que a Europa parece um bicho papão de sete cabeças. Tomara que os nerazzurri joguem contra o Rubin Kazan pensando que estão jogando contra algum time italiano.
