Be warned, FIOS installation is a big deal. The Installer came at about 11:00 am and left at about 5

Be warned, FIOS installation is a big deal. The Installer came at about 11:00 am and left at about 5:00 pm. Big job. In order to install FIOS, they have to cut the old copper wires that were coming to the house and bring new fiber cable. That in of itself probably took over an hour since there was only one person. At about 11:30 or so I tried calling home and I got the Verizon voice mail which was no longer set up with my outgoing message so I knew something was happening.

Here is what they did. First they install a new box on the outside of the house called an Optical Network Terminal. This then has three wires running into the house (for which they drilled holes). One is the phone wire which they hook up to whatever the old phone wire connected to (this means no extra phone wiring in the house needed). The second runs to a power connection as the ONT needs to be powered. The power connection also has a UPS (uninterruptable power supply or batter backup) connected to it. This is so that if the power were to go out, you would not loose phone. With the old copper wire phone system there was low voltage power running through the cable so the system powered itself. Now you need to plug in. The final cable is a coaxial cable which runs to a splitter which then goes to the new Verizon router. This is a wireless router similar to what the cable companies use. The other side of the splitter goes to the Verizon set top box, which in our case is also a DVR. The communication on this coax cable is two ways, so the set top box is also connected to the router. The wireless router also connects up our laptops to the internet with a whopping 25 Mbits of bandwidth (despite our only paying for 15, but hopefully Verizon is not reading this). There are also wired ports if we need.

All total the install process went smooth. The tech was nice and knew what he was doing and everything worked correctly when he was finished. Now we just need to explore the system. Hopefully in a week or so I will post a review. In the meantime, I have tried out the online portion of FIOS and I can log on to their website and basically be connected to my DVR. Not only can I set things to record (I could do that online with DirecTV as well) but I can now see what is set to record in one place, delete some of them if I need (since my kids love to press that record button) and even see what is on the DVR now (and delete them). I can even manage the parental controls from the internet site. I like the site so much that I would even consider using it to program the DVR rather than using the remote control in our family room!

Stay tuned then for a full review of Verizon FIOS.

FIOS is coming to town. I remember a few years ago when I first heard about this Verizon project. I said immediately that when they bring fiber to my house I will definitely climb on board. Last week we got an offer to switch to FIOS. I compared the costs with what we pay now, and sure enough we will save between $40 and $50 a month.

There has been a lot of talk on the internet about problems from FIOS, but it seems to be dying down. I have read a lot of great reviews over the past few days which has lead me to order the service. They are at my house now doing the installation. In this and perhaps one or two more posts I will talk about the experience and hopefully give a review of the service which may help others make decisions in the future.

I called Verizon on Monday to discuss the offer we got in the mail. The offer was for $89.99 per month on a one year contract. This would include Phone, Internet and Television (bundled with our existing cell service on the same bill). Sounds good so far. The woman on the phone told me that we would actually get $15 extra off per month because we were doing what they call the Quad Play (bundling everything on the same bill) and we will get a $150 per-paid Visa card, 3 months free home media DVR service ($19.99 per month after). The sales rep said she would call me back the next day so I could talk it over with Marsha.

Next morning, I get no call back. I was not yet ready to order anyway, as I had a few questions. I needed to know what the costs would be after the 1 year contract was up, will we get to keep our current email addresses (from Verizon DSL service) and how does this all work if we have a power failure. So I call back and get a different woman on the phone. She tells me that the first person got the costs a bit wrong. The regular cost for this is $99.99 but we will get $15 off per month for doing the Quad Play so that brings us down to $84.99. A little more than before, but still ok. The great thing is that this is a one year contract BUT a two year guarantee in pricing, so after the first year we will still get the same rate without being tied to the contract. If they come up with a better plan, we will be able to switch with no penalty. We still get the three months free on the DVR and the $150 Viso card, so all total a decent deal.

After deciding with Marsha that we will do this later that night, I went online to order there, and found that by placing the order online, I get an additional $5 off per month for 12 months! Not bad. So I order and I find that they can come on Thursday (today) to install! Very fast! I placed the order and then called them the next day to tell them that the 8am – 5 pm block of time is a problem because no one can be at our house between 8 and 11 most days. The person I spoke to called the installation department and they said that they will come at 11 and be able to start working on the outside of the house first, so that by the time Marsha gets home at noon we should be good to go.

I can only assume that they are working on it now. The installation process has them removing the copper cables to our house and running new fiber form the street to our house. When I called home a short while ago, I did not get our answering machine so I believe they are working. We did have Verizon answer call as well which is their voice mail. I had recorded an outgoing message there which was now gone, so I am not sure what is happening, but when it is all over later I am sure we will figure it all out.

So now I just wait. Tomorrow I will post on the rest of the install experience and what happens right after that.

As internet service providers offer faster speeds, a new area of competition emerges. Initially, the

As internet service providers offer faster speeds, a new area of competition emerges. Initially, there was a race to provide internet service at the fastest possible speed. Recently, the speed race has outpaced the demands of hardware. This has created a new variable for internet service provider. The bandwidth cap is fast becoming the new battlefield over which companies must compete.

There are cost limitations on the amount of bandwidth a consumer may use in a month. While users may feel like there is a big business conspiracy that prevents them from getting their desired monthly bandwidth caps at a comfortable cost, there are massive hardware costs involved in getting data to your computer at blinding speeds. On the bright side, though, prices are typically determined by the amount a consumer is willing to shell out for a product. Currently, the costs advertised by most internet service providers seem to be acceptable. However, one change in consumer behavior looms on the horizon. This inevitability threatens to annihilate the current comfortable foundation on which service providers build their business plans. The average consumer will some time soon want to see high definition TV content on their PCs. This will be the death knell of television as we know it.

While cable companies might have an interest in forestalling the inevitable by limiting monthly bandwidth, they will be unable to force this price control on the market. Wireless internet is being made available nearly everywhere at lightning fast speeds. This will make it nearly impossible for the transition to online media consumption to be prevented by any company.

This means great things for the consumer. As companies start to boast that you get more bandwidth for your money, these caps will go up very quickly. Companies that offer hardware to internet service providers will need to lower their prices as well. This is the nature of the pricing mechanism of the market.

With all of the many methods of transferring data, there needs to be a huge focus on value. For the consumer who desires to view high quality content, this will mean a dramatic improvement to the quality of life. High quality content naturally creates higher bandwidth demands.

Bandwidth limits will also have an affect on the quality of content that is produced. For example, most current media files need to be compressed to meet bandwidth limitations. When it becomes possible to transfer more data at faster speeds, these limitations would become immaterial. This might result in new advancements in music storage software. Why not increase the size of music files if they can be transferred very quickly? The same logic would apply for video files and any other content that people may attempt to share online. If a content provider can upload bigger files, then movie files would be available in increased quality. Over time this will permit for serious growth in the quality of audio and video files.

Online games will benefit from this boom as well. As data transfer rates explode, you can expect games to take advantage of the extra bandwidth. Online games will never tie up the same amount of bandwidth as streaming video or music, but it would be a mistake to ignore the demands of the online gaming market.

There is a bright future for online content. While some may whine about current bandwidth caps, we are not far away from an all out race between providers to deliver the best value for the money. In the end, this will mean great things for the fans of high quality online content.

As internet service providers offer comsumers faster speeds, a new area of competition is underway. Initially, the race was to provide the fastest possible internet service. Recently, the speed race has outpaced the capabilities of users' hardware. This created a new consideration for internet service providers. The bandwidth cap is rapidly becoming the new battleground over which these companies must compete.

There are price limitations on the amount of bandwidth a consumer may use in a month. While consumers may sometimes feel that there is a big business conspiracy that prevents them from getting the bandwidth they want at a comfortable cost, in reality there are realistic hardware costs involved in getting data from the internet to your computer at the speeds we've become accustomed to. On the bright side, though, prices are generally determined by how much a customer is willing to pay for a product. Currently, the prices advertised by most internet service providers seem to be acceptable. However, one change in consumer behavior looms on the horizon that threatens the current comfortable footing on which service providers design their business plans. The normal consumer will inevitably want to see high definition TV content on their PC. This will spell the end of cable TV.

While cable companies might have a vested interest in forestalling the inevitable by limiting monthly bandwidth, they will be unable to force this price control on the market forever. Wireless internet will soon be available all

This will be great for the consumer. As companies start to advertise that they will give you more bandwidth for your money, these caps will go up very quickly due to market pressure. Companies that provide hardware to internet service providers will be forced to lower their prices in turn. This is just the way of the world.

With all of the different ways to transfer data, there will be a huge focus on value. For the user that plans to view high quality content, this will mean a dramatic improvement on the current online experience. High quality content naturally creates higher bandwidth demands.

These bandwidth limits will also affecthave an impact on the quality of content created. Most current media files need to be compressed to meet bandwidth limits. Online games may never tie up as much bandwidth as streaming video or music, but it would be a mistake to ignore the demands of the online gaming market.

Broadband, cable, and DSL are all very well and fine, but it has to be said that the difference offered by Verizon FiOS fiber optics is an amazingly profound one. If you haven’t experienced that difference, you may want to consider your options, the next time your current contract comes due. It’s best to consider all of your options before you make a decision that will ultimately affect so many areas of your life. Don’t believe me? Let me tell you about the difference in the way that fiber optics work to transfer information.

Fiber optics transfer light.

Fiber optic cables like the ones used by Verizon FiOS are actually the wave of the information future. They are made up of many thin fiber optically pure cables of glass that are then bundled together and protected with a heavy plastic coating. These glass cables can transmit light signals quickly and easily over long distances. Digital information is encoded into light signals and sent through these cables to produce the television, internet, and telephone content that you or I need.

An improvement over traditional cable signals

Fiber optics like FiOS offer an improved quality of transfer over many traditional ways of transmitting information. The signals are clearer and do not need to be boosted as frequently, even better, they carry much more information much more quickly. These are the qualities that are at the heart of the matter when you are comparing the types of data transmission available. They make FiOS a better option for the transmission of digital information, a fact that has been recognized for some time.

Even traditional cable companies use fiber optic networks to transmit information to and from their large regional hubs. It is only when they reach the point of splitting the cables at the residential level that they switch to traditional copper these days. The difference with FiOS is that the fiber optic cables, and their benefits, come directly to your door rather than stopping at the office.

Try it yourself

If you doubt that there is any difference between FiOS and traditional services, bear with me and try a little experiment. Find a friend or acquaintance that has switched and ask their opinion. Then ask if you can come over and see for yourself. Experience the full potential of Verizon FiOS before you rule it out. I think that, like me, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

After all, this company has become a major player in the telecommunications market since the introduction of their fiber optic product. Their advertisements are everywhere and so, it sometimes seems, is their product. It would be hard not to feel familiar with the brand. But what do you really know about Verizon FiOS and the services it provides? Let’s take a look . . .

What is FiOS anyway?

Verizon FiOS is a fiber optic system of information transfer. It uses bundled fibers made of optically pure glass to transmit light signals from one location to another. The glass transmits information with more strength, speed, reliability, and clarity than traditional cable methods of information transfer. This means that any connection to television, internet, and phone services using Verizon FiOS will be of a higher quality than those currently available using cable. Verizon has noted that the term FiOS, though it sounds like an acronym taken from fiber optic systems, is actually drawn from a Gaelic word for wisdom.

So are there any downsides?

Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Like everything else in this world, FiOS does have its downsides. For most people in the United States the primary downsides are about location. FiOS is a comparatively new technology to hit the market and though it can ultimately be less expensive to place, the infrastructure for the service currently does not exist in most areas. For this reason, FiOS can be hard to get. Verizon FiOS Availability.

Furthermore, the costs of placing that infrastructure can drive up the cost of the service for the end user. The equipment used with fiber optics is different than that which is used for cable and fewer companies are able to produce it at this time, making it more expensive in the long run. This disadvantage is held somewhat in check by the price competition that exists between FiOS and other services, but it can then take a toll on the speed at which the service is rolled out across the nation.

In addition, competing companies and the franchise agreements that are in place to govern all telecommunications providers can hold fiber optic service back. These agreements may not allow for the placement of new fiber optic lines until a specific date or condition has been met. Despite these setbacks though, fiber optic services are spreading quickly across the country, offering improved television, internet, and phone services to their customers.

So last night I trying out git, trying to get more familiar with it, and as usual my add drew me into other mindless tasks.

For background, I was on my hp mini 311 running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I was trying to browse the win7 home group share on my main desktop. I went to My Computer->network and noticed that my Verizon Fios router was showing up…

I am referring to the Actiontec “Wireless Broadband Router”

So I was wondering, hrmmm whats up with that, what does Win 7 detect on the router, so I double click on it, and nothing happens. Ok no big deal.

I go back to coding, then a few minutes later, add hits me again, and I go to browse the NHL scores, and hrmm, my internet is dead. Oddly enough, my remote desktop session to my other laptop is up and running. Odd. So I check all my machines and my LAN is fine, but the WAN is down.

I login to my Verizon Fios router successfully, and it says, BROADBAND STOPPED.

I check logs, settings etc. and have no luck ’starting’ it.

I reset the modem via unplug/replug, no luck

I finally call Verizon (I know pointless) and talk to them. They say the box outside is responding, and have me go through the usual nonsense of checking cables.

Realize my TV is on the same coax, on the same splitter next to my router, I flip cables, etc. with no luck.

The verizon rep tells me a hard reboot (which I was trying to avoid to avoid reconfiguring wireless keys and 4 pcs, 2 iphones, etc) will do nothing.

I finally do a hard reset of the router, bam, everything’s working again.

I try repeating the steps from earlier, and I successfully reproduce killing my router’s broadband. I did notice the router when I right click shows an ‘Enable’ choice, which did nothing.

So for anyone who stumbles on this, a hard reset of your router seems to be the only solution! Hope that helps

FiOS TV customers will be the next to get HSN Shop By Remote, Verizon said Thursday.

It will be made possible by Verizon’s latest addition to its Widget Bazaar applications marketplace – the HSN Shop By Remote Widget.

“We’re excited about teaming with HSN to offer FiOS TV customers another unique interactive experience that combines HSN’s shopping technology with the unmatched speed and intelligence of our advanced all-fiber-optic network, adding an entirely new dimension to shopping on FiOS TV,” Shawn Strickland, vice president of FiOS product management for Verizon, said in a prepared statement.

The news came a day after Comcast officially announced what we had reported weeks ago, that the nation’s largest cable operator had rolled out HSN Shop By Remote to 8 million homes and was taking it national. Cablevision Systems Corp. was the first to offer HSN By Remote to subscribers.

“We’ve made it quick, easy and safe to order merchandise from HSN with just a few clicks of your remote control,” Strickland said. “See it, click it, own it. It’s that easy.”

HSN got its two cents in, too.

“HSN has always been at the forefront of innovation, and we are excited to be partnering with a pioneering leader like Verizon,” Peter Ruben, HSN’s executive vice president of affiliate sales and marketing, said in a prepared statement. “Thanks to our partnership with Verizon, we will offer our customers a revolutionary widget that will provide them with new ways to shop with us at home.”

The free HSN Shop By Remote Widget is available starting today, Thursday, in New Jersey, New York, Florida and Texas, and in all other FiOS TV markets by Dec. 7.

Customers must have an HSN online account. If they do not have one, they can create an account by logging on to HSN.com or by calling HSN at 1-800-284-5757. Once registered, customers can browse and purchase as many items as they want, whenever they want.

The HSN Shop By Remote Widget is located within FiOS TV’s Widget Bazaar applications marketplace. The full-screen widget appears with the following categories listed for browsing:

    — Current On Air Item – Product detail of the item currently airing live
on HSN.

    — Today’s Special – Available at an exclusive special retail price for the
day.

    — Verizon FiOS Deal of the Day – Exclusive to FiOS TV customers, a
must-have item that has never been discounted before will be unveiled
daily at a special rate.

    — Last 15 Items Aired – Customers can go back and browse a list of the
last 15 products on air.

Customers simply press the “C” button on the remote control to begin watching HSN on the right-hand side of the television screen; additional product detail from the categories above appears on the left-hand side of the screen.

To purchase an item, customers click on the “B” button on the remote and log in using the phone number and ZIP code associated with the customers’ HSN online account.

Once an order is finalized, a nine-digit confirmation number appears on the television screen, and customers can use it to track their shipment on HSN.com.

Before I could sign up for Verizon FiOS, I had to consider my needs, expectations, and budget carefu

Before I could sign up for Verizon FiOS, I had to consider my needs, expectations, and budget carefully. Verizon offers a number of plans as a part of their service and I needed to be sure that I had picked the one that best fits my needs. Signing up for a long-term contract that might not fit my lifestyle throughout the prescribed period was not in my plans. I could have chosen one of two general directions to begin with:

1. A bundled plan
2. A piecemeal plan

The first would simply cover all three of Verizon’s services in one flat monthly rate. The main customization would be at the level of speed. Some of the included features might also change depending on the plan I chose. The second option would allow me to customize everything to my heart’s content, phone, internet, and television could be taken or left as I chose, but it all came with a slight increase in price.

The Bundles

There are three Verizon FiOS bundles, or triple plays, available. Each offers phone, internet, and television services for a single price. The company differentiates between them mainly on the basis of speed.

The Fast Plan

Offers speeds of up to 15/5 Mbps and a free wireless router. It includes phone services with unlimited calling voicemail, caller id, and call waiting as well as internet services and television services. This last includes up to 295 channels and 14 HD channels.

The Faster Plan

Offers speeds of up to 25/15 Mpbs and free wireless router and wi-fi. It includes the phone services and internet services of the previous plan and up to 248 digital channels and 55 HD channels with the television services.

The Fastest Plan

Offers speeds of up to 50/25 Mpbs and free wireless router and wi-fi. It includes the services of the previous two plans as well.

After calculating out the prices of all these options were I to get them piecemeal, just to be sure, I made my decision. I chose to get all three services in order to keep all of my digital needs with a single company. I ultimately felt that it was best to sign up for all three of the services, as I would doubtless find myself converting to them in the future. The speed and convenience of fiber optic data transmission are simply too much for me to resist. It’s the wave of the future.

One of the best parts of my new Verizon FiOS package is the way it lets me bundle my digital needs f

One of the best parts of my new Verizon FiOS package is the way it lets me bundle my digital needs for better flexibility and use. The service is still so new to me that I have been enjoying most of its aspects, especially as compared to my previous provider’s service. I can already see an improvement in terms of speed, and just as importantly, clarity. Slow downs and interruptions during my online activities are a thing of the past. Movies load within minutes no matter how high the picture quality gets. And with so many options, getting the most out of my FiOS is easy. All I need to do is customize my service to my digital needs.

Telephone

I think I was most concerned about the wisdom of switching to a digital phone service. Verizon digital voice has proved to be the correct decision for me, however, based upon the sheer customizability of its service. I am able to access any of a number of useful features. I can schedule calls, block calls, utilize caller id or call waiting as necessary, or choose not to and instead block my own id. I can also add digital phone numbers to my account and set a back up number for phone failure emergencies. There are many more options available with my basic service and several others I can actually sign up for. Best of all, I am able to make any changes I need to the service over the internet itself.

Internet

Taking full advantage of the internet service I have received allows me to take my internet connection anywhere. The free wi-fi access that was included in my plan has allowed me to work from home as well as anywhere else I might need to be, from the coffee shop around the corner to the airport. Just as important is the noticeable increase that I have experienced in the speed of my downloads. Since switching from my old service I can download and watch a movie in minutes instead of waiting forever for it to load.

Television

Fiber optic technology means that my picture quality as offered by Verizon FiOS is clearer and more reliable than it was with my previous service provider. Knowing how the technology works, that is simply a given. In addition, Verizon offers me anything I could want from my television, including both content options and ways of utilizing that content:

Hundreds of channels

Local television access

Over 100 HD channels

Video On Demand

Multi-room DVR

Remote access for DVR programming

Verizon FiOS seems to be on the cutting edge of television and other types of telecommunications technology. This service uses the most advanced methods of information transmission currently available to provide their customers with the best possible telecommunications options. More importantly, in this world of constantly changing ever-updating technology, they promise to continue to pursue such advances on into the future.

The options

Verizon FiOS is not just a television provider. They offer three distinct services using FiOS technology. These are:

High speed internet

Television

Phone

Any customer can choose to sign up for one, two, or three of these services, although bundling is encouraged. This allows customers to either pick and choose which services to receive using high speed fiber optic transmission, like internet and ViOP services that are optimized for this format, or to group all of their services with one provider in order to receive more cumulative benefits.

Other types of offerings

In addition to the tangible services that Verizon FiOS offers, every customer must consider the intangible benefits of their specific technological base. Fiber optic transmission of data allows for a clearer and stronger signal to be sent faster and longer than the current standard. Coaxial cable in its current form simply cannot compete. Unlike other services, FiOS offers fiber optic transmission all the way to the premises, which means that your connection will experience fewer latencies and slow downs before it reaches you. Your data transmission will be faster and of a higher quality than if it arrived via cable or satellite.

In terms of television

For the television subscriber and viewer, all that this means is that your programming will be clear, fast, and reliable. Your channels will come in clearly, without interruption or blip. Your signal will be present and strong in all kinds of weather, inclement or not. Your video on demand downloading services will take minutes to completely download rather than hours.

In addition, you will receive a DVR, which will allow you to program your television viewing and utilize it according to your whims. This device will allow you to record and watch the programs that you choose from the locations that you choose and at the times that you choose. You will be able to control the programming from home or using the internet, which makes it possible for you to change it according to the shifting needs of your day. Also a word to the wise, if you are looking to save make sure you check out the Verizon FiOS Deals.

Recently, my apartment complex made a change. For the first time since I moved here a year ago I hav

Recently, my apartment complex made a change. For the first time since I moved here a year ago I have the option of choosing between two different providers with two different types of service for my phone, internet, and television services. Should I sign up for the newly available fiber optic service or should I continue on with the cable company? It is one of the more important practical decisions consumers face today.

What’s the difference?

Traditionally, of course, the option for the private consumer has been through cable. The cable referenced is copper cable that has been laid throughout much of our country’s infrastructure. It carries data that is broken down into channels of six megahertz and it can carry hundreds of these channels. This allows the cable to transmit television, internet, and phone service. The difference between cable and FiOS is the material that carries the data. Fiber optic internet, television and cable uses optically pure glass to carry data in and out of your home. A box provided by the cable company transmits the data that your home network generates by changing it to an infrared signal that the fiber optic cable carries to its destination. This format sends data more quickly and with less signal degradation than traditional methods. It also is cheaper to make, install, and maintain than copper cables are.

The Pros and Cons

Fiber optic internet services seem to have many benefits over the traditional cable providers but it boils down to a couple of considerations:

FiOS offers a faster transfer of digital information

FiOS offers better signal clarity

FiOS offers better signal strength

As for cons, there are a few of those as well:

FiOS is not available in all locations

FiOS relies on power from the home so in the event of a power outage no phone service would be available.

My decision

Realistically speaking, FiOS offers a number of advantages over traditional cable service. It is simply a better method of transmitting information, to the point that many cable companies use it to do their heavy lifting, only switching to cables when it comes to the last leg of the network, your home. As for the disadvantages, FiOS is available at my apartment that is not at issue. Every Verizon package includes a backup battery intended to cover the period of service loss that results from a blackout or other emergency. Verizon has their customers covered in that respect. So ultimately, you must have guessed that I picked FiOS.

The increasing number of new ways to use your internet connection is simply mind-boggling. My current favorite is ViOP or voice over internet protocol, the technology that allows you to place and receive calls over your internet connection. The ViOP technology is becoming increasingly high profile as people like Oprah embrace it and bring it to the public eye.

Here’s how it works

ViOP technology takes my voice and converts it into data packets. These packets can then be sent over the same wires that carry other digital information in and out of my home. There are downsides. Using the service effectively can be difficult if you don’t have a fast connection. The data can get degraded if it is not transferred quickly enough, but with a super fast optical connection like my FiOS connection, it works perfectly.

Verizon offers choices

I have to say, one thing I really enjoy about my digital voice service is the sheer number of options I have available for customizing my service to my needs. There are the usual suspects, of course, like Caller ID, three way calling, and voice mail options. But because my phone service is using the same fiber optic data transmission system as my internet services I have whole new options available to me as well. I can synchronize any information I would normally have on my phone, an address book or calendar for example, with the information that I have on my personal computer or other electronic device. This makes it possible for me to access my information from the device that is most convenient to me.

Verizon is concerned about my safety

One of the few disadvantages to receiving all of my phone, internet, and television services through one fiber optically based service is that if one is not working, then chances are none of them are. Unlike cable services, FiOS and other fiber optic services draw their power from the home network. This means that if the power goes out during an emergency, your ability to communicate with the outside world will go, too.

With digital voice services, however, I am provided with two separate safeguards against any disruptions of service. The first is a back up battery that will continue to provide power to my phone specifically during a power failure. The second is an ability to assign a back up phone number to my services, so that if my service is not working, I can still make and receive calls using the previously assigned number instead. No matter what I need from my phone service, I can get it using the digital voice offerings.

I exchanged some more emails with a member of Verizon’s PR staff, as I continue to try to get

I exchanged some more emails with a member of Verizon’s PR staff, as I continue to try to get a better understanding of the issues previously mentioned here, with FiOS customers in some parts of the D.C. area unable to get Comcast SportsNet Plus (CSN+).

What I learned in that email exchange might be helpful to some of you who are trying to understand why you can’t get Caps and Wizards games on CSN+ via FiOS in your area, when a FiOS customer in a neighboring county can. Or why you could get MASN2 on your FiOS channel 1 during baseball season, but can’t get CSN+ now.

If you are a FiOS customer in a part of the D.C. area that gets CSN+, it is shown on your channel 1. For you, that channel is called Fios1. This distinction between Fios1 and channel 1 is key to understanding this whole situation.

For the DC market, FiOS1 is available—according to the CSN Plus Listings on CSNWashington.com—in the following areas: Montgomery County and Prince George’s Counties in Maryland and then Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Loudoun County, Prince William, Spotsylvania County and Stafford County in Virginia.

Now for FiOS customers in someplace like Howard County, you have a channel 1. That channel was carrying MASN2 this summer. But, that channel is now blank for you, most or all of the time, according to one FiOS customer who lives there. Channel 1 for all of these particular FiOS customers is not FiOS1; it is just channel 1 and it does not carry CSN+.

The reason channel 1 carried MASN2 for these FioS customers this summer is, according to Verizon’s PR staff, because “MASN makes MASN2 available as a full-time feed. Comcast does not make CSN+ available as a full-time feed. At this time, [Verizon is] not able to handle a part-time feed like that, so outside of where [Verizon has] FiOS1, [they] cannot offer a part-time channel like CSN+.”

So, the only way FiOS customers in these areas could get CSN+ on FiOS channel 1 would be if either:

1.) Verizon turns Channel 1 into FiOS1 in these locations, like it is in all the locations listed above or 2.) Comcast SportsNet decides at some point to turn CSN+ into a full-time feed like MASN does with MASN2.

As for point number 1, Verizon says that FiOS1 is “a local channel that [Verizon] offers right now in three areas: DC metro, Long Island (New York), and Northern New Jersey. As [FiOS] moves forward, [they'll] announce any plans to expand the channel.”

People can debate where the DC metro area begins and ends, but for right now, according to the way FiOS defines it with FiOS1, it does not include some areas that are as close as about 20 miles to where the Caps and Wizards play their home games.

If I could get Verizon to answer one question, it would be: What specifically is preventing them from putting FiOS1 on channel 1 right now in these other DC area locations where there is demand for the CSN+ games? That’s the one thing I still have not gotten a clear answer on.

As for option number 2, this would require CSN+ to fill the time outside of games with some type of content. MASN2 did this by airing ESPN News. I have not heard whether or not this is something CSN would consider or even has the capacity to do. I only know that they want to help Verizon find a solution to this problem.

Despite the uncertainties, one things is pretty clear—a lot of people are losing in the current set-up. Caps and Wizards fans are not able to watch approximately a dozen of each team’s games, FiOS risks losing some of these fans to competing cable TV companies, CSN is not having some of their content seen by people who want that content and, finally, the teams whose games aren’t being seen are missing out on some opportunities to reach current and potential fans.

We need a beer summit.

Here’s an update on my post from Wednesday, about how Verizon FiOS only carries CSN+ in some parts of the D.C. area, causing frustrations for some Caps fans. I corresponded with representatives from both Comcast SportsNet and Verizon about the issue and want to share their responses.

But first, a quick thank you to the writers who linked to the post, sending a boatload of traffic to it. To J.P. at Japer’s Rink on SB Nation, Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy on Yahoo Sports, Dave Hughes at DCRTV and Dave McKenna at Washington City Paper’s Cheap Seats Daily — thank you!

And thank you to everyone who Tweeted about the story or posted comments on the blog. It was great to see so many people who are passionate about the issue and watching Caps games.

Those last few paragraphs felt like the Oscars, but it was important to me that I say thank you, because I really do appreciate all the links, discussion and thoughts you’ve shared.

So, here’s what I’ve got as of right now…

Tim Fitzpatrick, VP Communications with Comcast Sports Group called me today after I had reached out to a PR professional who works with the company. I was curious to know if there was anything that could be done on Comcast SportsNet’s end to resolve the issue, especially after seeing reader Jill’s comment on my original post yesterday, where she talked about the resolution that Cox and Comcast SportsNet reached, as she states “at the very beginning of the 2008-2009 season,” when “Cox customers were without CSN+.”

While on the phone, I asked Fitzpatick to send me a statement by email, which he did: “Comcast SportsNet makes 100% of our Caps and Wizards games available to Verizon FiOS, as we do to all of our distribution partners. However because of a Verizon technical matter, FiOS customers in certain Maryland and Virginia markets are unable to see Comcast SportsNet’s Capitals and Wizards games on the “plus” channel when the other team appears on the primary Comcast SportsNet channel. For further information fans should contact Verizon directly at 888-553-1555.”

A short while later, I got a response from a member of the Verizon public relations team to an email I’d sent them earlier in the day.

Heather Wilner, Manager, Media Relations for Verizon said in her email to me, “We continue to work on making CSN+ content available to customers in the parts of the D.C. area that do not get our FiOS1 channel, which is currently the only place FiOS customers can watch these games. We are working with Comcast to make this happen, but, unfortunately, it’s unlikely it will happen this season. We continue to offer a lot of other hockey content available on other channels, including games airing on local channels, CSN on channels 76 and 576 (HD), Versus on channels 90 and 590 (HD) and the NHL Network on channels 87 and 587(HD). And we hope to be able to get you all of the Caps games in the future.”

What I want to know is, what does Verizon mean when they say they are “working with Comcast” to resolve the issue and what exactly is the issue? What is the “Verizon technical matter” mentioned in the Comcast statement?

Quite simply, why can someone in Montgomery County, for example, watch CSN+ on Verizon Fios channel 1, but then someone just up the road in a neighboring county or another part of the region can not?

Is the fiber Verizon put in the ground in one county different from the fiber they laid in another county? Is it a capacity or bandwidth issue? Is it a contractual issue? Is it money-related?

I hope Verizon does get their customers “all of the Caps games in the future,” but I want to know what’s preventing them from giving all their customers CSN+ right now. That’s the answer I want, so we can figure out if there’s anything that can be done to fix the problem.

Until I get a better answer, I plan to do something many cable companies are quite familiar with—more digging.

Note: I realize the Caps are not the only team affected by this issue with FiOS and CSN+. There are times when the Caps are on CSN and the Wizards or college games, for example, are on CSN+, and some fans of those teams are unable to watch their games through FiOS. I focused on how this relates to the Caps when I wrote that story Wednesday, because that’s what I was plugged into as a big Caps fan. But if this gets resolved with FiOS, fans of many teams could benefit.

Today’s been a long, long day.

First we had to weather the house for winter. Anyone that lived through WWII in a big English country house knows that means duct tape for windows, draft dogs for everywhere, and lots and lots of lined drapes (placed over doors).

There’s a real art to saving tons and tons of money in winter. If you just ask yourself what would I do to make the house safe in case of a gas attack, and do that, you’ll be fine. Well, you’ll be warm and saving money.

When we got to work we realized that our PDFs, although created with Adobe and perfectly sound as far as embedded subsets of fonts and security protocols, wasn’t run through the Distiller first.

As Charlie Brown would say: Ahhhhg!

We love Lightning Source. They put up a lot of instructions for making postscript files and pdfs, but . . . they aren’t very exact or maybe the don’t update them as often as they should.

So it took awhile to figure out how to get In Design files Distilled. But we did. Along the way we noodled around with fonts, because we could still. This lead to a cover change, which meant a need to update website jps. And then there was the need to find and add back in a missing bit of code that kept freaking out the CSS driving the website. The answer was </a>.

Finally when we were all ready to go fixing stuff and loading stuff, there was no internet, so we had to stop. No idea what happened. But we had to call Verizon and have them reboot our FiOS, which shut off everything, phones, tvs, the whole wacky tacky taco.

Now we’ve got our internet back, but . . . it’ll all just have to wait till tomorrow.

Giorgia Cecchini (cat. 60 kg Femminile, X-Team Vigevano)

Luca Iovino (75 Kg, X-Team Vigevano)

Alvian Boboc (75 kg Bulldog Clan Bologna)

e l’ormai conosciuto Sergey Popa.(-81kg)
