She’s got a bit of work that needs doing to her but is a sound boat that has a lot of potential. All proceeds to the bigger boat fund.

That’s also a shot of Messing About In Boats HQ, otherwise known as an old chicken shed in the wilds of Hertfordshire. Slightly leaky, very dusty and with a doorway that’s not quite big enough, but it’ll do if I decide to build that Buccaneer!

The weather’s been officially rubbish this November. Gales, rain and chilly temperatures. My alarm went off this morning and I woke to dark skies, howling wind and a thoroughly unpleasant hail storm. Couple that with an afternoon of digging stumps out of a friend’s garden yesterday and climbing into some rubber gear to go sailing wasn’t looking or feeling too inviting.

Still, now it’s just gone 11am and the sun is shining, the wind has died and it’s even getting relatively warm. Maybe a trip down to the barn to sort out my Fireball ready to sell her. After all, I waved goodbye to Mushy Peas yesterday so it’s starting to get quite empty in there now; Which is a good thing I guess as boats really should be sailed. Plus it frees up a load of space if and when I decide to get stuck in to boat building.

At least in the time it’s taken to write that paragraph it’s started raining again…

Podczas swojej długiej wędrówki naznaczonej wieloma rozmowami i jeszcze większą ilością pojedynków Dink zwiedzi zamieszkałe przez goblinów Kernsin i miasto złotej kaczki Windemere. Znajdzie się także na samej krawędzi świata by ostatecznie trafić na mroczne ziemie gdzie oczekiwać go będzie główny bad guy w grze czyli wszechmocny Seth.

Rasowy erpeg

Tym samym nasz superhero swoje kompleksy odreagowuje najczęściej odcinając łby kaczkom, głodząc świnie, bijąc kobiety i wyrzynając własną rodzinę (patrz: mąż ciotki).

Kto by się jednak czepiał tych drobiazgów skoro Dink Smallwood posiada TAKĄ ilość grywalności?!

Yes tah dayee…

Was Friday. Friday I work. Friday I also go a’Bible-studying.

It’s always hard to decide which study to go to.

The more conservatively minded, smaller study… or the bigger, younger, more liberally minded study?

Last night I did both. (The young-er’s stay up lat-er. =)

From the smaller, older:

Isaiah 63:6-7 (The contrast here is interesting.)

… Jeremiah 6:10-27 (“I am full of the furry of the Lord…”)

Ephesians 4.

and from the younger, later:

Genesis 6… and Jude. (Nephalim? Canonization?)

Crazy Love, by Francis Chan… anybody read it?

————————————————————————————–

My sister and I stayed there and talked with everyone till 3:00 or so… =)

-Gave away some Nuggets tickets…
(My sister WON them… in a contest she didn’t even want to enter!)

-I locked a guy in the closet, and he SHOWED UP in another room!??? -plain-weirdness.

-Got to discuss Plato’s “cave analogy” yet again! (What about colors? What about levels? what about relevance?)

-Pondered the word “Dramatic”. (Does bursting out with an unintelligible scream when you remember that you’ve only 2 weeks of school left before graduation, count as “dramatic? =)

-Shared the news of a HUGE Fireball meteor! The light of which my brother, my roommate, and I saw as if’t'were a momentary sunrise in the WEST! a few nights back. It was pretty cool. =)

-Quoted some of “Inaudible Melodies” by Jack Johnson… (Goooooood music… *sigh*.)

-Thought about John Piper (Books, podcasts… due to my friend Chris’s mention of an audio book version of “Desiring God”.)

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

…my parents’ house, I slept on half of my brother’s couch… for a few hours, before two of my friends, “Elder” Call, and “Elder” Johnson showed up at the door this morning. asking to talk to me… (I don’t even LIVE here! lol)

Anyway, I talked to them for a while… encouraged them to read Philippians, and Luke… and promised to read “Alma” 36, and 42 and “Moroni” 10 something… (which I did once they left.)

I was soooo tired…

They are “nice” people… the first time I talked with them… Jesus broke my heart for them, and showed me how much He wanted them to know His truth from their lies… so this week they came again… and I learned from my last encounter, and encouraged them to seriously read the Bible and seek God. (The last time I kind of left it at, “Yeah, I guess if The Book of Mormon is a lie then God would show you if you asked Him.”)

I’m thinking of asking them if I can tag along with them next week… (I was their first stop this morning. =)

(They’ve never heard of Ravi Zacharias, EVEN THOUGH he talked at their Big Tabernacle place a while back. *shrug*)

It’s my mom’s birthday today! =) She’s insane! in a good way, mostly. =)P

I’ve no idea how she’s put up with all six of us crazy kids for so long. But I’m glad she has. =)

We ate brownies with ice-cream, and played Taboo… my team won by 1 POINT! =) (Not without a few disputes regarding “Jen” versus ”Gin” and whether saying “Superhero” was allowed, when “Superman” was taboo.)

…and Chic-fil-a finished the night. I yelled Bingo while we were ordering! not realizing that an ACTUAL game of bingo was going on. =( oops! lol! I thought it was funny.

Then I got to play legitimately, while we ate…

and… after several, suspenseful, close calls, I filled in a whole line… so… I jumped up and yelled “Bingo!” again, right?

I ran up to the table with my two hoodies half-on, and my stocking cap crooked, and my crumbled, ripped bingo sheet waving… only for the man to tell me that they were playing “Blackout Bingo.”

My brother and I were debating -upon my “shameful/depressed” return- as to whether everyone in the place was staring at me because “No way did that dude BlackOut, after only that many numbers!” or “What on earth? A craz-ed-ly joyful freak! with his jacket falling off, just beat us at Bingo!?”

Anyway, we had a good time the rest of the night, with our “waiter” (Whom I know from various local church-ish happenings.) saying, “My pleasure.” in response to me saying, “I’m sorry.” -tee hee hee- AND THEN! He didn’t say, “My pleasure” when I said thankyou for something else, later on! *gasp* That’s never happened to me before… EVERY employee at Chic-fil-a ALWAYS says “My pleasure” when someone says Thank you. They just do. But he didn’t!

I was… stunned, shocked… surprised, caught off guard… confused… But I recovered, as he walked away apparently completely oblivious to what he had just done.

There was a cow dancing around the whole time… Once, he purposefully got his hand caught in between the two doors while two young girls were watching. Motioning for help, he tried to get them to assist in freeing him… after several minutes the girls, as a team, freed the cow! and learned, to some degree, a valuable lesson in good will, and being a servant to all. =)

On the way home I was thinking about my Bingo defeat… and about how important it is to know what you’re shooting for.

So many times I feel like people “miss the mark” partly because they’re shooting for another bull’s-eye. (Like my Mormon friends.)

And I experienced, in a very tangible way, what it’s like to think you’ve accomplished the goal, only to find in the end that you were no where close.

I don’t want that for young Mr. Call or Mr. Johnson.

I’m sitting here tonight, typing all this out… with a bunch of little things annoying me to pieces! WHY?!

I’ve been thinking for the past two weeks, how important it is to tell God when I’m not doing what I know I should… when something’s distracting me from Him, when I feel like I can’t let something go. *sigh*

My brother’s birthday is tomorrow.

and I’m expected at church in the morning… (I should probably check with my friend about giving him a ride.)

My bigger sister is clicking to, and talking at, her cat! (It’s stuff like that that sometimes gets to me! And I can’t figure out why it sometimes does, and sometimes doesn’t.)

My biggest sister is listening to “Oh, My God” by Jars of Clay… I like that song… so much is packed into it!

I… should sleep… I’m sooo tired… five and a half hours of sleep wasn’t exactly what I’d planned. (But, Thank You Jesus! for something eternally-directed to invest in as soon as I awoke! =)

I

Like

And now I will leave you all… have a blessed, restful, thankful Sabbath!

(KSL.com) – SALT LAKE CITY — People all over the state were caught off guard when a ball of fire suddenly lit up the night sky. Just after midnight, the phones lit up at KSL as people across the state called to tell us what they saw and ask what it was.

The bolide meteor was likely a straggler from Tuesday’s Leonid meteor shower. The Earth is passing the Leonids right now, which is one of the most spectacular meteor shower shows that can be seen every year.

A brilliant fireball was seen over Utah a few minutes past midnight last night. Video images give the time of the fireball as ~12:07 am MST (7:07 UT). At least 2 comments to this blog describe the event.

Miah wrote:

Did you guys see the one in Bountiful Utah a half an hour ago Nov. 18th 2009 12:12 A.M. It had to be at least 30 feet wide with a fire blazing tail that lasted for a couple of seconds stringing out at least a mile long and it lit up the dark night like it was a really bright sunny day. The kind of day you really need to wear sunglasses from horizon to horizon for at least 6 seconds it threw my heart up into my throat and I received an immediate and outrageous adrenalin rush. This experience was by far the coolest thing I have ever seen in the night sky. If anybody else saw this please post and I really hope someone or somebodys business buildings camera got this on tape and they post it soon. I really want to relive that moment again… All I can say is WOW…

and Melissa wrote:

i was at walmart shopping and when i came out to put my items away the whole sky lit up like it was morning for about 3 seconds and then i turned around and then things got dark again and i saw an orange tail in the sky looked like fire and then it was gone it was so weird and scary

KSL TV has a whole bunch of videos listed on their website. Especially check out Patrick Wiggins video where he gives a great and thorough explanation of what the fireball was. Some of the videos show the actual fireball in the sky while others show the ground being lit up as bright as day. Further news stories can be found at The Salt Lake Tribune and Spaceweather.com.

Six or so hours later, as the sun was rising, a ghostly blue trail was observed over Utah. This trail appears similar to those seen after other bright fireballs. What is amazing is that trail had not dissipated after such a long time. Note, the crazy meandering pattern of the trail does not mean the fireball was moving erratically. The erratic pattern of the trail is due to varying wind speeds and directions in the upper atmosphere.

So far I have not seen any images or videos of the fireball. All the videos and images just show the ground or sky lighting up. As Miah wrote above, the fireball lit up the ground as bright as day.

Though it was probably below the horizon as seen from Tucson, the sky did brighten towards the north. My north facing meteor camera did detect a brightening of the northern sky. Though I recognized it as something unusual when I looked over the data this morning, I deleted the data since there was no obvious meteor in the field. Only later did I read about the Utah fireball. Luckily the MMT all-sky cam picked up the flash from Mount Hopkins, just south of Tucson. The flash was observed to the north at the exact time of the fireball so there is no doubt they are related. If the flash was seen as far south as Tucson, it is likely that it was also seen from a wide area including the states of UT, AZ, NM, CO, WY, ID, CA,NV, and OR.

Though the fireball occurred at a time when the Leonids were at their best, it is doubtful it is related to the Leonids. The Leonids are extremely fast meteors, in fact they are almost as fast as meteors can get (~70 km/s). As a result, Leonids rarely last more than a second and usually burn out in one very quick burst. The fact that this fireball lasted for some time (~5 seconds) means it was a much slower meteor that probably descended to a low altitude (~20-50 km). It is more likely it was caused by a small (0.5 to 2 meter) asteroid.

I bought some more vinyl last weekend at the local charity shop and here is what I got.

Styx – Crystal Ball (1976)
Never heard this album by Styx before or anything else by them for that matter, except their 1983 concept album Kilroy Was Here which I got on vinyl when I was younger. I remember really liking that album but it being kind of corny at the same time. But it did have some pretty catchy tunes and I dare you to listen to the tracks “Heavy Metal Poisoning” or “Mr Roboto” without secretly smiling and singing along to Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto?

Philip Lynott – Solo in Soho (1980)
Mr Thin Lizzy’s first solo album. I have never heard it before but have read good things about it. A lot of great guest musicians, current and former Lizzy members played on the album including Huey Lewis. Yes, it is the same man as in Huey Lewis and the News! According to the interweb he played some harmonica with Thin Lizzy.

It’s Hip to Be Square!

Thin Lizzy – Jailbreak (1976)

I have never listened much to Thin Lizzy, I bought an album a few years ago after reading a very interesting article in Sweden Rock Magazine. The album was called “Bad Reputation” and was really good. It was not your typical Thin Lizzy twin-guitar rock album but showed them in a different light with some more acoustic and folkmusic inspired songs. The album Jailbreak has to be one of the more classic Lizzy albums with both “The Boys are back in town” and the title track “Jailbreak”. Two tracks killed to death by thousands of pub rock bands. This vinyl edition was quite nice with a cartoon like cover and a cut-out in the TV.

Deep Purple – Fireball (1971)
An album with the classic Mk II lineup of Deep Purple. I am sure I have heard a couple of the tracks on this album but from just looking at the titles on the back I can not recall anything… but I do like the title “Demon’s Eye”… That sound evil enough too be cool…

I stayed up last night to see if I could catch a couple of Leonids. After all, some of the news stories were predicting the possibility of a half storm (as many as 500/hr). Well . . . truth to tell, by the time yesterday rolled around the reality was that if it was going to be that strong anywhere on the planet it would be in Asia, but they were still saying there should be 25 – 30/hr in North America, with the possibility of as many as 200/hr. I don’t live in the darkest part of the world, but Simi Valley is a somewhat sleepy little town and my back yard is reasonably dark.

My first experience with a meteor shower was about thirty years ago, out in the Mojave Desert where some friends and I had gone to view the Perseids, one of the more spectacular showers that usually peaks on or about the morning of August 12. It’s a good time to view them – the weather at night in the desert can be quite pleasant and it was. I saw some beautiful bolides; a couple being bright enough to cast faint shadows on the desert floor. Spectacular! Wondrous! Unfortunately, life intervened and I was never able to get out to that spot again, but I’ve attempted viewings many times since; just never in a really dark location. Now that I have more time, or at least my time is more flexible than it’s been for the last couple three decades, I’m beginning to wonder if my eyes are giving out. Surely my patience is wearing thin.

This year I’ve so far attempted both the Perseids and the Orionids and haven’t seen a damn thing! Last night (this morning) was no exception. I did see two meteors, but neither was a Leonid. One came out of the West and was bright and extremely fast. The other came out of the Northwest and was a bit slower and quite a bit fainter. However, the Leonids were a no-show for me. Perhaps I should have planned to stay out all night, but I just couldn’t afford to give up all of today. I guess I’ll have to content myself with the knowledge I have seen at least one spectacular showing and, perhaps, that will have to be good enough. I’ll probably try again; the Geminids are coming up next month. <sigh>

The best place to watch it is in Asia, but North American observers should have an above average viewing, weather permitting. To see the best chance, head outside between 1 a.m. and dawn. NASA is predicting 20-30 metors per hour can be seen in America. The Leonids puts on a great show every year and this year the moon is near its new phase so it should not interfere in viewing.

What is the Leonid Meteor Shower?

The Leonids are created by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which passes through the inner solar system every 33 years on its orbit around the sun. Each time by, it leaves a new river of debris, mostly bits of ice and rock no bigger than a sand grain but a few the size of a pea or marble. Over time, these cosmic streams spread out, so predicting exactly what will happen is difficult, but Earth usually plows into the debris, the pieces hit the atmosphere and vaporize, creating sometimes dramatic streaks of light and the occasional fireball with a smoky-looking trail that can remain visible for several minutes.

Just another average day for me, but i had waaaaaay too much sleep thanks to my fractured toe and ended up waking up at 0500hrs. Eventually i got restless and wanted to work on my armor. Got distracted by new Twitter apps on the iPhone and before i knew it, i ended up starting at 1200hrs. Managed to cut and sand all the limb armor pieces of the Stormtrooper outfit, ended at 2200hrs all covered in ABS dust from sanding the rough edges. Yech!

This hot drink was invented in Canada as a cure for the bone-chilling cold. And oh what a success it was. Shots go down smooth and leave one tasting cinnamon and feeling fast-spreading warmth from throat to toes. Perfect on its own or mix it with apple cider for a drink guaranteed to make those dreary fall days a little less bleak. Let this spicy drink light your fire. Cheers!

Northern California residents weren’t the only folks who witnessed a brilliant fireball last Friday night. Not one but two fireballs were seen over southern British Columbia. The first fireball occurred at 7:03 pm PST and is the topic of a story on CBC News. The 2nd fireball happened at 7:44 pm PST.

Dave Balam of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory near Victoria, British Columbia sent an image of the 2nd fireball taken with the Observatory’s all-sky camera. (Thanks, Dave!) The brilliance of the fireball is evident by the fact that the sky was completely cloudy at the time. Even with the clouds and rain drops, the fireball is easily visible as it moved across the sky.

A brilliant fireball was seen over California during the early evening of November 7 at around 5:10

A brilliant fireball was seen over California during the early evening of November 7 at around 5:10 pm. Quite a few reports have been posted in the comments sections on this blog.

A comment posting by Rich gives a rather detailed observation of the event:

“11/07/2009 at approximately 1700hrs we were driving south form Santa Rosa on Hwy 12 and were passing through Sonoma when we noticed a large brilliant white fireball in a SSW direction. It first caught our attention at about 20 to 25deg off the horizon. Our visual on it only lasted only about 3-4 seconds then just before passing the hills in the distance it seemed to go out. There was no associated noise or sign of impact. It was just gone. There was a smoke or debris trail that we could see after the object was gone that was visible for perhaps a minute or so then it was dispersed by the wind.”

Pictures of the residual smoke trail can be seen on the Spaceweather.com site.

Additional news stories were published by the Daily Democrat, San Francisco Chronicle, Contra Costa Times, and others.

The fireball was most likely caused by a small asteroid, probably no larger than a basketball. Though it is possible it may have been related to the Taurid meteor shower which is near its maximum in activity, it could easily be unrelated to any shower. The very bright slow fireballs are usually asteroidal in origin while meteor showers are usually produced by comets.
