On Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 2:17 AM, 5 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 2 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 4 Arson Units, 1 EMS Battalion Captain, 1 Battalion Chief Officer Command Team, under the direction of Battalion Chief John Potter responded to a Structure Fire at 14153 West Erwin Street in Van Nuys.

Firefighters arrived quickly to find a two-story garden style apartment with smoke showing from the rear of the ten unit structure. Neighbors were awakened by sounds of breaking glass and smoke alarms shortly before the arrival of fire crews. Residents tried to enter the involved apartment, but the smoke and heat was too intense. Firefighters made a rapid entry after reports of a person still inside.

Roof teams cut ventilation holes to release super heated gases, as fire attack teams performed fire suppression and rescue efforts. During the attack on the blaze, Firefighters discovered a 65 year-old elderly woman inside the home. The patient was immediately provided with advanced life support intervention and transported to Sherman Oaks Medical Center. The patient was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A positive identification of the deceased woman, as well as the cause, time, and manner of death, will be determined by the Coroner’s Office.

The fire was confined to one unit and rapidly extinguished in just 16 minutes, with 36 Firefighters. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

I wonder if the outcome would be different if fire trucks in the area were not closed due to budget cuts at the LAFD?

It’s obvious the “I” FIVE mentioned above were busy trying to get the Union president recalled while protecting their overtime. Meanwhile, a life was lost at the expense of the new “I” Generation. This new “I” Generation is designed and fostered by the Los Angeles Fire Department Administration through special recruitment and social engineering projects. We are now a proud Department of misguided and confused sycophants. It’s unfortunate in this day and age that firefighters (Captains) responsible for mentoring and guiding firefighters have chosen the path of the “I” Generation. These self-serving employees are willing to sacrifice and abuse others such as civilians and colleagues to gain status and power (and not in that order). Had the “I” FIVE provided real solutions and thought-provoking “out of the box thinking” to the recent “Brownouts”, maybe lives could have been saved. Instead the Gen I’s are trying to trade holidays and vacation time, using a union recall as their platform. Eventually their pockets will be full, and their ultimate goal of “CHIEFHOOD” will be fulfilled.

We also want to give a shout out to Steve Tufts (Ex Union President) and Captain II Mike Castillo. We commend both of you on your ghost writing abilities and your behind the scene deals.

STAND UNITED

My earliest career choice wasn’t to be a princess like most little girls want; I think I had a stron

My earliest career choice wasn’t to be a princess like most little girls want; I think I had a strong enough sense of reality to know princesses from the “happily ever after“ genre really didn‘t exist, and Prince Charming would never ride up on his white stallion and carry me away. Instead, I longed to be a mermaid. That’s right–a very concrete dream–much more “do-able” . . . that desire lasted several months, and was repeatedly at its peak every time I was in the bathtub. I would shrink down into the tub, becoming one with the steaming liquid that covered me, spreading my long brown hair as if it were drawn in a piece of Japanese art, floating about my head with curly-Q‘s on the ends of each strand. Inevitably, my toes would pop out of the cooling liquid and become lodged into the large water spigot, my only lifeline to the physical world, and I would be abruptly transformed back into reality. Like a thief in the night, the thoughts of mermaids, peaceful underwater surroundings, and the hauntingly beautiful music sang by much better voices than mine, must have quietly slipped down the drain with the icy water.

Once upon another time, I fancied myself a photographer–or at least an aspiring photographer. I found I had a passion for developing and playing around with black and white film in my college’s darkroom and couldn’t wait to build one of my own. That dream was cut as short as the blinding pop of a camera’s old fashioned flashbulb, and ended up in the same place one would put the blacked orb of glass, with it’s shattered filament, when I had an interview for admission to the Department of Cinema and Photography at Southern Illinois University two years later. They would have actually accepted me into the program, but I was wise enough to realize I couldn’t come close to competing with the kind of work I saw displayed in the Dean’s office and on the hallway walls. Fortunately, photography did serve as enough of a diversion that it saved me from being a permanent business major. Yikes.

Somehow, the old photography hobby must have been the foundation for my taking pictures at a friend’s wedding several years later. I know I didn’t volunteer to do it–I would never do that–because when I put my camera down, I really put it down. So, my friend must have asked me, and knowing the persistent soul she is, all the protesting in the world wouldn’t be enough reason for her to back down from what she thought was a brilliant idea. I took roll upon roll of wedding photographs until out of the corner of my eye, I spied a candelabra in serious trouble. I watched vigilantly as a candle slipped further and further down the brass holder, with its flame being forced by a ceiling fan, dangerously closer to a beautifully tied bow and most certainly, onto the carpeted floor. Being the impatient soul I am, the candelabra and I could wait no longer for the many firefighters in the wedding party and in the family pews to come to the rescue. Exactly midway into the wedding vows, I sat the camera on a pew and ran to the fully engulfed bow. Instinct took over, and I picked up the entire holder, towering well over my 5’2” frame, with upwards of 12 burning candles on it, over my head and teetered toward the nearest door. The only fear I recognized at that point, was that the door might not be tall enough or wide enough to fit the entire flaming fixture and me through it. By the time I reached the door, several firefighters lifted the prize from my hands, deposited it on the ground outside, and expertly stomped the flames with their shiny, patent leather shoes. It was a sight to behold, but no one got it on film. I did get chastised by a couple of firemen, for not leaving it where it was and letting them handle it. Ha–they didn’t even see it until I paraded through the front of the sanctuary with it. Shame on me. And thus, I ruled out yet another potential career–albeit one that had never been lovingly lingered over like the previous two–that of firefighter.

“Go thunk yourself” philosophy—“Positive”, Put a plus before everything in your life—Day 6 (The idea

“Go thunk yourself” philosophy—“Positive”, Put a plus before everything in your life—Day 6

(The ideas that have been learned from the book “Go thunk yourself” by Dr. Robert C. Worstell, are being shared. This is the sixth principle)

From today on start emphasizing on the positive side of the life, or in other words look out for the brighter sides, for there are a lot of good things to come in your life!

Some pratfalls you could avoid are as follows:

TV-raised generations and their thinking:

Creation takes place through our thoughts which are POSITIVE ACTIONS. Thoughts are the blue prints for all the creation that takes place. Destruction, while thought of as a negative action, is not a negative action but the lack of any POSITIVE ACTION.

This is like darkness, which is nothing but the lack of light and there is no darkness in itself.

Darkness—Insufficient light

Non-positive thoughts—Inefficient, old junk (IE. Lack of new solutions and ideas)

This is emphasizing the NEGATIVE SIDE instead of taking the POSITIVE SIDE in your life, by new, innovative thoughts and solutions to problems.

Younger TV-raised generations have been taught how to use the gadgets and other modern equipments but not how to use their mind. They lean on solutions that are “Ready-made” rather than come up with their own solution or innovative and creative ideas!!

They are struggling to kick start the CREATIVE POSITIVE ACTION.

Just because someone’s thoughts and thought pattern appear to be stupidity, vagueness in expression or irrelevant doesn’t mean they can’t think clearly but has been conditioned to “Not to put effort” in thinking. That’s because they think through the solutions that others have already achieved for themselves.

In stark contrast, have you ever seen a firefighter, soldier, paramedics or any other professionals who could come up with a POSITIVE creative solution in a jiffy?

How are they equally good to the emergency?

That’s just because they had practiced thinking on a regular basis by solving problem after problem gaining a vast storage of ready-made solutions or the data that could be combined instantly to produce new solution(s).

Void of positive message in news media:

News media—TV, radio and newspaper are so interested in presenting all the controversial and negative news to the public than giving them positive, GOOD news.

Once again, non-positive is the lack of POSITIVE which doesn’t give us any chance to come up with a solution or find a solution as most of the information they provide us are NEGATIVES, not to mention they feed us with gloomy thoughts or thoughts that mislead.

Garbage in garbage out:

To have a positive light flowing through your life, start eating and feeding everything that is positive.

How many times could you see someone going around being critical of others whether in workplace or anywhere for that matter and getting complete support from the people?

You’ll see a miracle if that happens even once!

Very shortly, the other people would start their part of criticizing toward that person!

That is what life is basically.

If you are POSITIVE; if your approach toward others is positive; and if your thoughts are positive, then you get all the things that are in harmony with your “POSITIVE APPROACH”

When one thinks of others as his/her “competitors” wherever he/she goes, then all those people become that person’s “enemy” in his/her mind.

Stephen Covey says that criticizing, complaining, comparing and contending are the “Spiritual and emotional cancers”, like in the above example.

So what happens when one go on with this mentality?

1. With whoever they come in contact with they always wants to win against the person instead of thinking that they both should benefit.

2. Finding fault with others because they are now his/her “enemies”

3. Constantly on guard to dodge attacks that may arise from the “enemies”

This is the NEGATIVE outlook of life which results in negative feedback and results.

This mentality could be seen among some managers who don’t want to trade tips or exchange ideas but exchange glares!

Sales men and women who fight against each other and think the other as their “enemy” instead of considering a mutual benefit and sharing of their lessons they learned from their experience or training.

Positive contribution:

Think of Ray Kroc of McDonald’s and Sam Walton of

Wal-Mart.

What did they have in common?

They both had green papers that would take at least another century to count them by hand!

And secondly,

They both were top contributors. Walton could have easily become the richest man in the world but he routinely gave money to his children which ensured that he didn’t lead the Forbes richest people list.

It’s not how much one could amass but how much one could give POSITIVELY after he/she has gotten to a great level.

Prosperity and happiness is not just in receiving but in giving also, for Warren Buffet has contributed more than $30 billion to the now philanthropist Bill Gates who is operating “Bill and Melinda Gates foundation”.

Elimination:

If you want to improve in any area the first step must be ELIMINATION- elimination of non-positive attitude and non-constructive attitude. It’s easier to run without a baggage around your back, isn’t?

In the same manner, it is much easier to do a work or to carry out your endeavors in any area when you don’t have the baggage of “Non-positives”.

Let us finish this beautiful topic with the following astute lines by Wallace D.Wattles:

“Moral and spiritual greatness is possible only to those who are above the competitive battle for existence; and only those who are becoming rich on the plane of creative thought are free from the degrading influences of competition. If your heart is set on domestic happiness, remember that love flourishes best where there is refinement, a high level of thought, and freedom from corrupting influences; and these are to be found only where riches are attained by the exercise of creative thought, without strife or rivalry. ”

Wish you all the riches to come with God’s blessings

Peter Anand

“We have joked about doing a calendar for years at the firehouse,” said Chief Kevin Keddy, leader of the busiest fire department, per capita, in New Jersey. “I thought it was a great idea when ArtsCAP approached me after the Fall golf outing.”

WHINY STRIPPERS ARE NOT CUTE… BELLIGERENT BANK MANAGERS AREN’T EITHER… BUT ‘SAFE’ WORDS AND BRIBING PEOPLE TO BE QUIET SURE IS FUNNY. “YOU SAY WHO” – GOSSIP ALMOST AS DELISH AS YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S PUMPKIN PIE

The 2010 calendar, proceeds benefitting the Fire Department Building Fund and ArtsCAP, was photographed over two days in late October with fourteen ladder men (one for each month and the front and back covers).

As award-winning photographer Alan Barnett’s camera began to click, the new models quickly became competitive; attempting to ensure their photo was the best by grabbing cool props including gear, saws, hoses and even the Jaws of Life.

“Their enthusiasm was contagious,” said Alan. “When Jason Fazio appeared for his shoot, he had already applied mineral oil to his arms and he good-naturedly tried to outdo his friend Gavino by choosing a larger axe as a prop. When I asked if he would scale a ladder to the second story of the firehouse, he was up there before I could focus my camera.”

Wives, fiancé and even one mother-in-law stopped by to check out the making of the calendar, encouraging the guys further and energizing the interviews I conducted to develop a backgrounder to accompany calendar photo.

“These guys are beautiful inside and out and we hope everyone sees that more now,” commented Michele Conklin, Firefighter Conklin’s wife, via TheBPlot.com.

Purchase the calendar for $15 and learn who considers himself shy and is looking for an extraverted lady, who wanted to “chase fires, not money,” who has “too many tattoos to mention” and who enjoys classic Russian literature.

One hysterical firefighter asked me to describe his “marital status as complicated” however I thought he might not find it as funny in 2010, so I left that comment out.

Every one of the firefighters I had the pleasure of meeting during the 16 hour shoot – many more than the 14 who are part of the calendar – was a kind, selfless, dedicated and fearless gentleman. All honest-to-goodness life-saving heroes in the flesh.

Buy one of them lunch or a cup of coffee the next time you see him.

“Bringing together two very important institutions was great,” said Dennis Carroll, president, ArtsCAP. “I was most delighted with the hospitality – we all felt like were members of the department when we left.”

The fourteen firefighters (twelve months plus one cover guy and one back-cover guy) – their names revealed here for the first time – who generously participated in the making of the calendar and deserve our thanks: Marcus Blackmon, Patrick Castellano, Carney Conklin, Rick Dawson, Rich Dreyer, Jason Fazio, Jon Hart, Courtland Heyniger, Mike Mautner, Gavino Siciliano, Ronald Slinger, Andre Spann, Jamar Stephens and Christian Stevens.

Aaaaaand on top of everything, I had once-in-a-lifetime Asbury Park moment; I slid down the gorgeous, original, brass, 30 foot long, finial topped fire pole…twice!

So which of the equally fab firefighters will be the 2010 cover guy? Which month will your favorite firefighter represent? All will be revealed on Nov. 28th. Launch party is 7 pm to 10 pm at the Third Avenue Pavilion. TheBPlot reader’s invitation, click here.

The calendar will be available through ArtsCAP.org and local businesses, including: Bodega, Heaven, Mike’s Beach House and Shelter Home. Supplies are limited.

Whether you are a seasoned non-union or union set medic, knowing how to work with stunt coordinators and stuntmen is crucial in the motion picture industry. Too many set medics tend to be too relaxed in the area of stunt safety leaving all the details up to stunt coordinators or Fire Safety Officers. The bar has been raised yet again and now medics are being utilized more as eyes and ears for stunt coordinators. When it comes to safety, no chances should taken.

Set Medics must know how to work around stunts which is why Southern California FIRE & EMS is hosting workshops to address set safety. The classes are being taught by some of Hollywood’s biggest names in the stunt arena.

“The best decision I’ve made in years.” That’s how Andrew Dukes describes the choice he made to leave the restaurant industry seven years ago and join the Port Hardy Processing Plant (PHPP).

“I wouldn’t go back to cooking for anything,” he said.

Andrew’s job as back up lead hand involves programming plant computers and staff organization. He also works on the processing line.

After certifying as a Red Seal Chef through Malaspina College (now Vancouver Island University), and Camosun College, Andrew wanted employment that offered benefits and stability, unusual in food service. He found both when he answered a newspaper ad.

Andrew was born in Liverpool, England, and came to Canada on October 31, 1972. The family settled in Nanaimo, where his parents still live, but Andrew moved to Port Hardy in 1987.

Away from work, Andrew loves camping with wife Kellie in their new trailer. Atluck Lake near Zeballos is a favorite place. Tia, their 14 year old Norwegian Elkhound, and two year old Yorkie Poo, Pickle, round out the family. Andrew has been a volunteer firefighter for 12 years. Attending one meeting with a friend was all it took for him to realize his interest. He also continues to enjoy cooking.

May 27, 2009 will always be memorable for Andrew. It’s the day he became a Canadian citizen in a ceremony held in Campbell River. “It’s something I should have done years ago,” he commented, adding that he has no desire to leave Port Hardy, Canada or Marine Harvest.

Fanelli can’t recall ‘The Hit’

Joe Warmington, The Toronto Sun Oakville | Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 5:12 am

Oakville – It seems the only person who hasn’t seen “The Hit” is the very guy who took it.

He may not have seen it but young hockey player Ben Fanelli lived it.

At least that’s what doctors, his teammates and his loving family have told him.

The 16-year-old Fanelli also doesn’t remember an opposing forward crashing toward him, his head smashing into the glass, his blood pouring onto the ice, his teammates circled around him in prayer, him being taken off with a back board before the horrified Kitchener crowd or the airlift to hospital in critical condition.

But one look in the mirror shows something drastic happened. And that giant scar running down from his right eye tells the whole story of a kid who suffered a cracked skull and broken orbital bone.

Throw in that “fuzzy” feeling as he walks and the Oakville kid understands it must have been a heck of a wallop which prompted OHL commissioner David Branch to suspend Erie Otter Mike Liambas for the remainder of the OHL season.

“I don’t remember any of it,” the talented Kitchener Rangers defenceman laughs Tuesday in his first public words about the Friday, Oct. 30 bodycheck seen and heard across the country.

Of course his mortified parents certainly do since they were at the game.

“It was my worst nightmare,” says his mom, Susan.

Firefighter dad Frank agrees, saying they are so grateful to have their son home because in the hours after this incident it was “touch and go” where doctors warned there were no guarantees.

“I thought for sure he was going to check out,” says an emotional Frank. “If you had a child you would understand how that felt. I died inside.”

Their son dying, being on life-support or permanently disabled were all scenarios they were trying to come to grips with.

But there they were yesterday.

Their wonderful son is home from hospital, healing and already looking ahead. From the depths of darkness to relief.

“We want to thank everybody for their cards, well wishes and prayers,” says Susan.

“And the Kitchener Rangers organization has been amazing,” says Frank.

Ben adds he was shocked that so many cared — everything from being mentioned on Hockey Night in Canada to having former NHLer Adam Graves come to visit him in hospital.

The product of the Mississauga Senators of the GTHL’s focus now is to work with the doctors and recover from this unexpected road block in his career.

“I can’t wait to get back on the bus and see the guys again,” says an enthusiastic Ben.

Not so fast, say his parents. There are a number of steps to go through first.

“He is going back to McMaster for more tests,” says his dad, adding there are concerns over a “clot” as well as other potential damage.

While Ben’s mom says, “there will be some discussion before he puts the skates on again” you could certainly tell by the look on Ben’s face that if he has his way not only will he do that, but he’ll be back out there on OHL ice as soon as humanly possible.

Those kinds of decisions will have to come in their proper time, says Frank.

“We don’t know yet,” he says of the long-term prognosis, adding there are more tests to come.

But he’s certainly in a better place than a week ago. And it was a good sign to see young Ben Tuesday throw on his Kitchener Rangers number 4 and head out for a walk around the block with his mom and dad.

He’s a very nice kid and you can tell why because he comes from a very nice family.

“I feel pretty good right now,” says Ben with a smile.

He’ll feel even better when he can get back in the Kitchener Rangers’ lineup — one event he, and all those who root for him, will have no problem remembering.

Yesterday was the day I posted that I was thankful for every moment I have with my husband when he i

Yesterday was the day I posted that I was thankful for every moment I have with my husband when he isn’t working. That was my thankful item for Facebook yesterday and I want to expand on the status for each item, each day, in my blog.

My husband is one of those people that draws others to him. Cannot tell you what it is about him exactly but once people meet him they seem to want to be around him all the more. Could be his infectious smile, or his usually upbeat attitude, or the fact that he is very direct when asked his opinion. He will warn you that it may not be what you want to hear but he will tell what he thinks. And he doesn’t lie. The truth may hurt to hear but the man simply will not sugar coat or be deceptive. Whatever it is, he is a people magnet.

He is one of those people that sees the long term and everything he is doing in this moment is connected to the long term plan in his head. He has a gift for sizing up the situation and plotting the course to get the job done all within a matter of seconds and 99% of the time his plan is right on. He is the same way with judging people, he sizes them up in the first moments and can give you a pretty good character analysis on the spot. I’ve never known him to be wrong about anyone, ever.

I was a single mom, recently divorced, when we met. My son was just three years old at the time and anyone I dated was kept away from him for the most part, as strange men in and out of his life wasn’t a good thing in my mind. But Pete was different, I knew the first time I layed eyes on him that I was going to marry him, and I had not even been introduced. My son took to him when they met and to my son, this is his dad. While he had a relationship with his biological father up until his late teens, Pete is 100% dad too him.

I watched my husband suffer for years in great pain due to a broken vertebra in his lower back that went undetected for over a decade. The pain caused him to lose sleep and sleep deprivation did not make him a fun person to be around some days. But he went on functioning, working and being the best husband and father he could be to my son and our daughter. Once he had surgery he spent a number of years out of the work force and during that time took on the home front in a way that would make Mr. Mom and Mrs. Doubtfire jealous. He did it all, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and even home schooled our kids. I swear there isn’t anything he cannot do!

When it was time for him to return to the work force he went to school to be a firefighter/EMT. NOT the choice I would have made for him. I was married to that profession the first time around, I knew full well what I was getting into as a firefighter’s wife and wanted no part of it again. But it was HIS desire so I supported him. I have to say he found his nitch in life even if later than most. He loves the job, and puts his heart and soul into it. He also has a side business, landscaping and mowing, that he also enjoys very much.

When I was let go from my job after nearly 26 years, a year ago October, he started picking up every extra shift that was available. He has even picked up a second side job to help supplement what I am not making. While he does encourage me in my search for employment, he isn’t pressuring me about finding work, he just does what he can to make up for what I am not bringing home. Even now, when money is tight he never tells me no when I want something. He has had to tell me to wait, but he always finds a way sooner or later for me to have what I want. He has always seen to it that me and the kids have everything we need and most all the things that we want. I try hard to be what he needs and wants me to be in return, it is the least I can do!

He does all kinds of little things that tell me how much he loves me, and I know I don’t thank him nearly enough. He truly is the center of my world and I cannot imagine my life without him in it. I love you Pete, and I’m SO thankful to have you!

Yesterday was the first time in a long while that I actually woke up next to my hero. Lately he has

Yesterday was the first time in a long while that I actually woke up next to my hero. Lately he has worked so many shifts that he is on duty 24 or 48 hours (and sometimes 72 straight hours) then home for 24 hours and back to the fire house. If he is on duty he is up at 5am while I am still asleep, my last memory of him on those days is him leaning over the bed kissing me on the cheek and giving me a hug. An hour or so later I wake up all alone. It was so nice to snuggle up to him while he slept yesterday then slip out and make coffee so when he finally did wake up it was waiting for him.

I wasn’t able to fall back asleep this morning so I got up early and here I am at the computer with my coffee. Today won’t be bad, he is only on duty for 12 hours then he will be home. We have a party to attend this evening and we are hosting a tailgate/driveway party tomorrow at our house for the Bengals game. He’ll go to his side job on Monday during the day so once again I won’t get to wake up next to him, then back to the fire house for another 24 hours on Tuesday.

Most fire fighters have side jobs, mine currently has two. He owns and runs his own landscaping company and he has picked up some part time work with a friend as well. It is keeping us floating financially while I continue to hunt for job. But even after I am working he will continue the long shifts at the fire house, at least 24 hours on and 48 off if not 48 hours on and 24 hours off. I look forward sometimes to working again full time so the days will once again pass by quickly. I must admit, however, I’ve enjoyed being home the past year to bond with my daughter and adjust to being a domestic diva. I’m even cooking some days, which I used to hate. I’m no pro yet and hubby jokingly posts on his Facebook status to the other guys to be on standby at the fire house because I’m in the kitchen, but I’m getting better.

Fire fighter families adapt to handling a lot of the family affairs on their own, sometimes with coaching and input from our hero by phone or text, but mostly we know what we have to do and we get it accomplished. We adjust to spending holidays without them as they don’t get holidays off like the rest of the world. Firefighters and police officers are required to be there no matter what. This year mine works Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve day and Christmas day. Christmas I don’t mind so much, I encourage him to trade or cover hours for those that have little ones at home so they can be there when the children wake up to see what Santa brought them. We are past those years with our offspring as adults so we try to make sure others get those opportunities. We will celebrate on Christmas Eve with our children and no one will mind at all. Thanksgiving I will spend with my family and try to focus on being thankful that my hero has a job and is at that moment alive and well even if he is eating at the fire house. I’ll stop in to see him for a bit and relish whatever moments with him I have.

Fire families learn to adjust to home coming and prom pictures with dad and a fire truck in the background, the proud papa in uniform. Most every major dance in my daughter’s high school years fell on daddy’s unit day so she had to make a quick stop so he could see how beautiful she looked.

To the new wives of fire fighters, connect with your sisters, those other fire wives. You need backup and support at times too and no one ‘gets it’ like another wife. Don’t complain to your man, trust me he feels bad enough that he isn’t able to be there. Support him and love him and make the best of it so if, God forbid, he answers his last alarm one day you never have regrets, only wonderful memories. Even if those memories are birthdays celebrated with all the guys at the fire house, believe me the kids won’t mind and they too will have great memories! And if he comes home tired and falls asleep, or is grouchy, cut him some slack. You never know what he experienced during his tour and often you won’t ever know. You don’t need too, a lot of it wasn’t pretty and may haunt him for years to come. Sometimes it is simply they were on runs all night and he needs a power nap.

Praying for the safety of all our hero’s today, especially Unit 2, until they return to us safe and sound.

In my half asleep state this AM, I wondered… why am I getting something from the U.S. Department of Labor? And I ripped into the envelope as I rolled down the lane.

John would have rolled his eyes. John was meticulous when it came to mail. He’d sit down somewhere with an official letter opener and methodically open each piece of mail.

Me… well that’s what God gave us fingers for… RIP!

Had I thought it was something important, I would have gotten out the letter opener… that darn hindsight…

Anyway, the letter reads…

Dear Mrs. Smith:

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy for th death of your husband, Firefighter John P. Smith.

All of us at the Department of Labor ar solemnly reminded of the important role of firefighters in protecting this nation, and we offer grateful appreciation for Firefighter Smith’s sacrifice.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to you and your family on your loss,

Sincerely,

Jordan Barab

Acting Assistant Secretary

OK, John, I promise… the next piece of mail that looks “official” I’ll get the letter opener out to open it…

Today while at work, I decided to take a break from my EMT studies and search for open positions as a Firefighter. I printed out two applications today. The first was for Ithaca New York and the second was for Los Alamos New Mexico. Truth be told, I don’t really want to live in New Mexico. But because it is an opening, so I can see myself moving to any state.

By Cara Sulieman

FIREFIGHTERS rushed to save thousands of books from flames after yobs started a fire in a library toilet.

Staff had to evacuate the McDonald Road library in Edinburgh after the blaze was discovered today (thurs) afternoon.

Toilet paper had been stuffed into a pipe duct in an out of order cubicle before being set alight.

And after two firemen in breathing apparatus managed to douse the flames, they still had to deal with the plumes of smoke that had clogged the library’s corridors.

“Saved a few stories”

Andrew McGuigan, crew manager of Green Watch from McDonald Road fire station who put out the flames, said that it was a lucky escape for the thousands of tomes housed inside the historic building.

He said: “I guess you could say we saved a few stories.

“We got the call just before 3pm and were at the incident quite quickly. The staff at the library were very good and had already evacuated the building.

“Three pump appliances and one height appliance with a total of 15 firemen attended the scene.

“Although the fire was put out quite quickly, there was a lot of smoke to deal with. A fire investigation team also attended and we left the police in attendance as their forensics team looked for fingerprints and that kind of thing.”
