Happy birthday to you, happy birthday day to you, happy birthday to Firefoxxxxx. Happyy birthday to you!! Okay, your fifth birthday was actually on Monday; I’m late. Sorry. As a belated gift, I will continue to use you for the foreseeable future as my primary web browser. That is until something better comes out – Google’s Chrome is supposed to come out before Christmas on the Mac.

Can’t believe Firefox is five. Here is my journey. In early 2006 I only knew of Internet Explorer as the main web browser. In Spring 2006, I jumped onto Firefox on the recommendation from a close friend. He was using the fox and was zipping about the web, adding extensions and opening windows in TABS. Firefox was the only browser on the block to have tabbed browsing at the time. It changed the way I browsed. I never looked back. IE was archaic compared to FF.  At the end of August 2007, I bought a MacBook. With OS X 10.4 came Safari. Safa-what? I need my FF was what I thought. FF was slow as hell on my MB. It hoggged RAM like no other, spiked the CPU, heated up the computer…it was nightmare. I eloped with Safari. When Firefox 3.0 was set to go down on June 30, 2008, featuring major RAM reductions and faster page rendering, I joined the millions of people worldwide in downloading it on day one to help set the world record. Indeed, it was much improved. I abandoned Safari and switched back to the fox. I’ve been using FF 3.5 as my main browser ever since.

Whew. That was a mouthful wasn’t it? Even with Safari’s 4.0 being snappy, I can’t live without the plug-ins/extensions that can be installed for FF. Take one plug-in called “Ad-Block Plus.” It blocks advertisements on all web pages. I installed it earlier this year and I haven’t seen an advertisement on the web ever since. No wonder I’ve been so much more productive this past year!

Firefox is an open-source web browser. Because the code is not locked in a closet somewhere sealed beneath 10 layers bullet proof glass, anyone who wants to modify it to their liking can do so. Customization is key for a useful FF experience. No two installations of FF will be the same if each one is customized to the individual.

Here’s to many more years of Firefox! As a bonus, let’s see if the majority of people even know what a browser is.

Google’s Chrome will bring some competition to the web browser arena. It is already my web browser of choice on a Windows machine. The beauty of Chrome lies in the small application size, stripped down interface and FAST FAST page rendering like no other. Chrome is already for Windows and is expected to be released before Christmas on the Mac. Can’t wait!

Remember what the Web was like in 2004? Thanks for changing that, Firefox!

I never liked the new Firefox 3.0

1) It crashes more frequently than the last 2.xx (which NEVER crashed)

2) It’s damn’ slow on my eeePC

3) My pictures loaded on flickr.com look almost completely DESATURATED with the new Firefox – not with Explorer, not with the old Firefox

Do I have to switch to Explorer? My flickr.com pictures look like if I left them on a sunny week in my car – only when I browse them with the new Firefox …

Any help?

When Firefox 3 came out I installed it. I was instantly ticked off.

My computer seemed to be one of those supposedly rare contexts that Firefox 3 was unstable in. So many web pages would cause it to crash. Especially those with Flash based ads.

YouTube had that notorious 2-seconds-of-play-then-nothing problem.

So I switched to Opera. It was stable. More or less. There was memory leakage, and regardless of the content in the tabs, eventually if left on for long periods of time it would gradually take up more and more resources to run. When it maxed out on one CPU core (50% CPU in Task Manager), all bets were off. Forget even saving your work, or your session – often you would have to just kill the task and you weren’t guaranteed to return to the session you left.

But that took long periods of time to set in. More recently, the tabs haven’t been working. You click on another tab to view it, and you can view it, albeit the tab you are then using doesn’t get highlighted. Nor, if you have many tabs open, does the tab width change to a best fit if you drop enough tabs to have less than the width of the bar – like is supposed to happen. The result is confusion – you can click on the wrong tab, or close the wrong tab, or just have a bar of tabs with the width of the tab displayed not being the width of the tab as treated by where you click – Opera is treating my clicks as if I can see the change of tabs, which I can’t – it doesn’t update the bar.

On top of this, switching between tabs has slowed down.

While this has gradually got worse over the months, I’ve since made a few changes to things here and there. I’ve still run Firefox for those pages that Opera can’t handle, and kept it updated. Importantly, I’ve un-installed all of my Adobe flash software, which thanks to a botched install, was preventing updates from being able to be applied.

With Adobe updates working properly again, and with the latest Firefox 3 versions, Firefox has since returned to the stability I enjoyed with Firefox 2. Making it more usable than Opera. For me at least.

So, for the first time in a long time, I’m writing a post to this blog from Firefox. It’s early, so I won’t say it’s good to be back, but I am enjoying the island of stability in my browser experience.

What will happen to all of this when I finish re-transitioning back to Linux, remains to be seen.

Unless you spend a lot of time reading the specifications and hard details of internet browsers, you probably don’t know what half of internet browser reviewers are talking about.  When I read that Google Chrome uses the latest NVIDIA 8600 Graphics Unit, my head starts to explode a little.  And the fact that Mozilla Firefox has 1 GB of RAM and a 1200x Processesing Core means nothing to me.  What I would like to read is a user account of the performances by each of the major internet browsers.  Well, lucky for you, that’s exactly what this is.  So sit down and buckle up because this is my first forray into technological smartness stuff, and it’s sure to get ugly along the way.

Which is the best internet browser; Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari?

Internet Explorer 8.0

You know, the only positive thing I can come up with is that Internet Explorer has great support.  Probably the best of all of the browsers I used.  However, 99% of people have never and will never use or care about Costumer Service and Support for their internet browser.  So this is pretty much useless.  I used IE 8 when it first came out, and as with all Internet Explorers, I was unimpressed.  Right out of the box it was one of the slower browsers.  When you begin to download toolbars, however, it gets really ugly.  I was operating an election 2008 toolbar and a StumbleUpon Toolbar on each browser that had support for those applications and Internet Explorer took the add ons the worst.  Pair that with the fact that as I type this the only browser that isn’t working of the four I have downloaded is Internet Explorer (It’s telling me I’m offline.  Clearly that’s not the case.), and it’s obvious that it’s the weakest of the bunch.  For slow loading and start times, not to mention poor stability, I give IE 8 2 of 5 stars.

Mozilla Firefox 3.0

Mozilla definitely pulled out all the stops with their Firefox browser’s third version.  The newest version features better privacy features, quicker performance, and, coolest of all, new applications.   The best thing to be said about Firefox is it’s vast expanse of applications.  Like the iPhone, I can assure you “there’s an app for that”.  Whether it be a theme or a weather widget, the mozilla.com has it all.  Thankfully, Firefox can handle the extra applications.  I’ve installed over 20 applications, and website loading time hasn’t been drastically increased.  However, I’ve been experiencing some stability problems with the latest update to Firefox.  The browser often crashes and leaves me having to restart and try and remember all of the tabs I have open since it doesn’t save your tabs by default.  Definitely an inconvenience, but not a deal breaker.  For the vast array of applications, Firefox still gets 3.5 of 5 stars.

Apple Safari

When Apple announced the release of the Safari browser to Windows-based computers, I was pumped.  I’d heard all my Mac friends talk about how zippy Safari was for years, so of course I needed to be a part.  Unfortunately, like most things, Safari must work best in its home environment because I was not all that impressed.  Though Safari has the second best start-up time, it’s all a big scam.  Once the window starts up the browser stalls for 3 to 4 seconds then loads.  Though Safari was the second most stable browser in my tests, the 3 to 4 second delay between page loads is extremely annoying.  When you’re running several tabs, that adds many minutes on to your browsing experience.  And quite frankly, Safari doesn’t have the extra features to justify the slow performance.  For that I give it 2.5 of 5 Stars.

Google Chrome

Ahhh Google, you amaze me.  As if Google wasn’t cool enough already, they release a killer internet browser that blew the competition out of the water.  Once I finally got around to downloading Chrome, I found that it was what I’d always looked for in an internet browser.  The window pops up immediately after clicking the icon, and the home page loads quickly after.  It amazes how Chrome manages to open and load so much faster than the other browsers when they are all operating on the same wireless network.  Each time I click a link or load a page, I’m amazed by the speed of Chrome.  I’m so amazed, in fact, that nearly every time I get the chance I tell my friends and colleagues to download Chrome.  It’s allowed me to be so much productive when on the internet because it doesn’t have the unstableness of Fireforx, the stalling of Safari, or the generally crapiness of Internet Explorer.  For being far superior to anything I’ve ever seen, I give a perfect score of 5 out of 5 Stars.

Final Score:

Eliminar la opción de autocontemplado de la barra de direcciones, con lo que podemos también preservar que por accidente aparezcan sitios visitados o de los propios marcadores y que no queramos mostrar, para ello pondremos en la barra de direcciones about:config , buscamos la línea browser.urlbar.maxRichResults (empleamos el filtro para encontrarla), en ella aparece generalmente el valor 12, se hace doble clic sobre ella y ponemos 0, aunque si queremos que salga otro resultado se pondrá el correspondiente número.

Q: I’m running FireFox 3 what happened to all the cookies ?

A: What is happening is that Mozilla FireFox 3.0/3.5 default setting is to delete the cookies every time Mozilla FireFox 3.0/3.5 closes…… to stop this…

Follow these steps:

1. Open TOOLS

2. When drop down menu appears

3. Select OPTIONS it is the last one on the drop down menu

4. When the new Window opens up select the PRIVACY TAB

5. It will take a few seconds to load

6. Now make sure the first option “KEEP MY HISTORY FOR AT LEAST” make sure it says 90 DAYS

6a. Now go to the bottom there are 2 options with a check box ALWAYS CLEAR MY PRIVATE DATA WHEN I CLOSE FIREFOX make sure that option is UN-CHECKED. Then there is an option that says ASK ME BEFORE CLEARING MY PRIVATE DATA make SURE that is CHECKED

This week was a very glorious day for the folks at Microsoft when a study found out that it’s the safest browser out passing the increasingly popular Firefox 3.

According to the study, while IE 8 was capable of fending off 83% of live attacks, firefox (which came second place) could block about 67% of all the live attacks. Safari 4 on the other hand provided the poorest level of protection.

The team behind IE are struggling to convince people to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 which is now 10 years old to thee new Internet Explorer 8 which provides the latest technology.

The validity of this report however, is being disputed due to the speculation that the study performed by the NSS labs was funded completely by Microsoft which could cast some bias on the results.

Thì ra tôi sài Firefox v2.x . Thế là lên google tìm firefox 2 nhưng chữ “o” thứ nhất, rồi thứ hai….–> nản, tìm không ra. Đành phải lục trong mấy cái USB mang theo và gửi cho bạn-của-tui qua YahooMessenger.

Pues asi como lo leen, sin mas por fin este excelente navegador en Español de Mèxico, asi que ya no es necesario usar ningun complemento adicional para pasarlo a este idioma, pues la distribucion ya esta originalmente en este idioma.

FireFox 3.5 Español Mexico (es-Mx)

Quando você tem um histórico muito grande ou muitos favoritos, o navegador fica lento ao gerenciar favoritos ou histórico e, principalmente, a Barra Sensacional fica lenta para mostrar suas sugestões, o que torna desagradável digitar qualquer coisa ali. O que precisa ser feito é otimizar o banco de dados do navegador, o que pode ser feito da seguinte forma:

Obs.: feche o Firefox primeiro!

$ cd ~/mozilla/firefox/seu_perfil
$ for i in *.sqlite; do sqlite3 $i vacuum; done

Isso vai otimizar o banco de dados do navegador, que vai ficar bem mais rápido para buscar entradas na barra.

Baseado nisso, eu fiz um script shell para realizar essa operação. Ele verifica se o sqlite3 está instalado e, principalmente, se o Firefox ainda está em execução. Se alguém tiver uma idéia melhor para o script, é só me avisar:
