Firefox 3 was released to millions of users and ended up setting a World Record for most downloads in a day. Servers crashed, bloggers blogged, and the Internet Explorer team sent a cake; everyone was happy. However, those millions of downloads appear to be sitting silent on the downloaders’ hard drives, as some new stats reveal.

Firefox is nothing short of crawling when it comes down to increasing its audience. While it is indeed eroding Internet Explorer’s install base and constantly attracting audience, Mozilla revealed that no less than 75% of all Firefox downloads go dead. Three quarters of all the users that download the open source browser never use it again.

We’re not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.

In support of the attempt to get a download record, I downloaded the newest version of Firefox after a few hours waiting to reach the servers.
I wonder what the impact of Mozilla’s downtime will be on the record attempt.

Right now I am one of the 17000+ downloads in Belgium alone and the counter is on 1,7 million, just a few hours after kick off.

I finally got though (at 12:05pm PST) and got my official Firefox 3 download! I’ve been running the release candidate for weeks, and I hear that this is pretty much the exact same thing, but hey, it’s official now.

If you’ve never used Firefox, I would encourage you to go to www.getfirefox.com and take it for a spin! You just might like it! (and if it’s any help, Bill Gates WON’T like it that you’re not using his browser)

Firefox 3 was released today at 10am PST. It’s now 11:10am PST, and all Mozilla sites are unreachable. I’m assuming and hoping that this is because so many people are downloading it that the servers can’t respond to more requests.

È semplice! Basta recarsi sul sito ufficiale, www.getfirefox.com, ovviamente dopo l’ora del lancio (in Italia saranno le 19.00), e scaricare la nuovissima versione del celebre browser; una versione rinnovata dal punto di vista estetico e dotata di molte nuove caratteristiche (vedi il mio articolo riferito alla versione beta di Firefox, «Navigare in sicurezza con Firefox 3»).

Scaricatela e soprattutto fatela scaricare! Contattate amici e parenti (in particolare quelli che utilizzano ancora Internet Explorer), spiegategli cosa sia Firefox e soprattutto come scaricarlo!

Partecipiamo tutti per diffondere questo fantastico browser (è vero, esistono programmi migliori, in particolare per GNU/Linux, ma l’importante è portare via quote ad Internet Explorer che da anni costringe gli sviluppatori Web ad un lavoro di riscrittura di tutto il codice per farglielo interpretare correttamente)!
