Speaking to VentureBeat, Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten discussed the recent round of Xbox Live bans. According to Whitten, banning users from Xbox Live is "a cat and mouse game." Said Whitten, "These were people that were pirating software." He added that Microsoft looks at banning users "from a safety and anti-cheating perspective" and that the company looks out for its partners. Responding to the widely reported story that Microsoft banned over a million Xbox Live users, Whitten said that the figure is inaccurate. "I cannot explain to you why people would think it was a million people," said Whitten, then adding quite succinctly, "It wasn’t a million people."
Whitten went on to state his belief that Microsoft does "a really good job" of monitoring the activity on Xbox Live, specifically in terms of piracy and online harassment. He concluded that the company is "committed to making [Xbox Live] better and better."
The interview also covers the recent integration of Facebook on Xbox, the effect Modern Warfare 2 had on Live activity (hint: a big one) and whether or not we’ll be playing Facebook games on our consoles anytime soon. Don’t expect a straight answer on that last one though, as the closes Whitten gets is, "In the future, they will move much closer together."

I just did a download on Echofons which create an easy way for me to do tweeting on Twitter, and no need to go to its’ official website. Echofon is another form of the various Twitter Plugin. But I prefer it because it’s easier, faster, and better used.

Echofon has 3 main menus which are:
-Friends: to see the latest tweet from relatives.
-Mentions: to see the reply made by relatives.
-Messages: to see the direct messages that behave like inbox.

Echofon performed with simple appearance. He is black-gray and can be accessed via a small icon in the bottom right corner of your Firefox browser.

After downloading and installing the Echofon, a pop-up box will tell you to do some configuration. Some of them are:

1. Add Account
2. Themes
3. Font Size
4. Get Tweets
5. Popup intervals

Do as instructed and Echofon immediately provide adequate facilities for you.

To download it, do a few steps below:

1. Make sure you are in Echofon.com . In the main page, will display 3 options that can be downloaded. Choose according to your needs.

2. (New in Firefox) Download it to finish and then Firefox will tell you to install it. Select the option Yes and a small icon will appear to glow in the bottom right corner of your browser. The color will be blue when the Internet connection worked well, and red when disturbed.

For those who use Firefox as their preffered Browser (that’s my case:)), here are some addons

For those who use Firefox as their preffered Browser (that’s my case:)), here are some addons that I really recommend to improve their navigation on Internet:

- Do you have a Twitter account? For those who use this networking service, there is an addon called Echofon: “Echofon for Firefox is an extension that adds a tiny icon to the status bar. It notifies you when friends post tweets and has a text entry field for posting your own tweets.”

- FEBE: “allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up. It will actually rebuild your extensions individually into installable .xpi files. Now you can easily synchronize your office and home browsers.”

- For web developers, there is Firebug: “Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of web development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page.”

- DownThemAll is a download manager: “It features an advanced accelerator that increases speed up to 400% and it allows you to pause and resume downloads at any time.”

- IE TAB: “Embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox… This is a great tool for web developers, since you can easily see how your web page displayed in IE with just one click and then switch back to Firefox.”

- Web2PDF: This addon allows you to convert any web page in a pdf document.

- You can also get the weather forecast for your region with Forecastfox.

Those are just few addons that I tested and I now use during my daily navigation in internet, but there are a lot of free and interesting addons which you can easily download and test whole over the internet.

Did you found some other interesting addons to Firefox? I’m sure you did, so… please share!

However, the solution is quite simple, and the fact that it is even seen as a problem is evidence that many people simply do not look at what is front of them (sorry, but it’s evidently true).

When you go to a site that relies on Flash, don’t look at the error message on the web page – look just above it and you’ll see Firefox is well aware of the issue, and is presenting the solution to you.

All you need to do is click the “Install Missing Plugins…” button and you will be presented with a list of plugins to choose from, both official (ie: the Adobe one) and open-source. You can try any you please, especially if you’d like to try slimmer, open-source alternatives that probably use less system resources, but pick “Adobe Flash Player (installer)” if you prefer to play it safe (I’d recommend that).

Select your choice, click the Next button, and that’s it (Firefox might need to be restarted, though probably not).

If you want a simpler method you can implement straight after an Ubuntu install, before you even load Firefox, once again the terminal is the answer. Just enter the following command, and it will take care of everything:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔

If you’d like to make sure the plugin is successfully installed, enter about:plugins in the address bar. It will list all installed plugins, with the first one being the most recently installed, Flash.

↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔↔

In case you’re wondering what other web browsers this plugin supports, any browser based on Netscape or Mozilla can use the Flash plugin. Here is the list of those currently supported:

Mozilla, Mozilla-Firefox, Firefox, Iceweasel, and Iceape. Also Galeon and Epiphany can use the Flash plugin. Konqueror can also use the Flash plugin if konqueror-nsplugins is installed.

Mozilla has released a new beta, the third, the next Firefox 3.6.

New in this version tests are grouped into two areas. In the first part of the unprecedented ability of Firefox to run scripts asynchronously. This should translate into a further speeding up the development and display of web pages that use advanced JavaScript (ergo: web application).

The second area is what concerns the stability of the browser. On the one hand, developers have corrected more than 80 bugs and other Mozilla has decided to exclude the future to a third party direct access to the directory “components”. This is a method by which you can extend the functionality of Firefox by installing additional software directly into the “heart” of your browser but there are risks and problems specific to users, which is why Mozilla has decided to ban the practice.

The third beta of Firefox 3.6 The can download as usual for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, located in more than fifty languages. Those who are already using a previous beta of 3.6 can update your copy directly from the browser. But remember that this is beta software and therefore to be used at your own risk, or at least after reading the release notes that include the system requirements and warning of trouble.

This is an angry blog entry. Read no further if that offends you.

"Don't hold my computer hostage, you bitches!"

Internet Explorer 8, or as I call it, “Aiyeeeeeee-Hate,” has completely screwed up my Internet experience, resulting in my messing up Firefox in an attempt to find out what was screwing up IE8. Now I’m having problems with both browsers. I am so frustrated!!! Four days of effort and still no satisfaction! And everybody keeps giving me the same worthless advice.

“Hey, your wagon isn’t working right? Let’s try to reinvent the wheel all over again. Go back to the very beginning — take all the wheels off and start anew. Then we can put a whole new set of wheels on your wagon and it will go again.”

F**k you, Microsoft, and the horse you rode in on. The problem lies in IE8 — something you changed!

1) IE8 cannot seem to display web pages I have been going to for the last 4 or 5 years (or more). WTF! Why are we having a problem suddenly after updating to IE8?

2) IE8 seems to have been sent out without all the security certificates it should have included, because suddenly since updating to IE8, I cannot log in at my bank (a secure site). I get a message that roughly indicates that this may not be the site I think it is, and the safest thing to do is just close the web page. (But it’s my bank, the address is correct, and their VeriSign security certificate seems to be in good order.) There is another secure site that behaves in the same way, but not all secure sites are warning me off. [Have you ever locked yourself out of your house or apartment? Doesn't it make you furious? Doesn't it make you want to scream and dance up and down and wave your arms about! I'm doing that now! My husband is busying himself in another room until I cool down.]

3) Trying to publish a blog article has become so excruciating that I just want to throw something, and I’m really not that kind of person. I love my things way too much to want to break something. In both IE and Firefox, trying to upload a file to WordPress.com is next to impossible. You follow the directions and it looks like it might accept the upload after a very long time, but then it throws a blank, white page in your face and you don’t know if the upload was successful or not. If you try Refreshing the page, it takes you back a page to the beginning of the upload process. Then you have to start the upload process over again. [Insert scream here.]

One night this last week, I sat in front of my beloved computer with a stopwatch in one hand, the mouse in the other hand. I finally got a picture uploaded and in place in the article and pressed the Publish button. By the stopwatch it was 13 minutes and some odd seconds before WordPress announced success, that it was actually published in the wee hours of the morning. I had been working on it since about 10:30 in the morning.

What this experience has taught me so far is that I REALLY don’t like Microsoft’s attitude toward the typical user. They seem to say, “You’re too stupid to manage your computer by yourself, so we’re going to do it for you. Just ignore the men behind the curtain. While we help ourselves by gathering information from your machine, we won’t hurt you — MUCH!”

I am not a rank beginner. I am not a child. I am a free woman, old enough to be someone’s grandmother. I will not be folded, spindled, torn, stepped on or shoved into a corner!

I bought the computer. It belongs to me. I reserve to myself the right to control what happens to my computer and to veto any suggestions made by a well-meaning advisor if I think that is appropriate. I will listen to advice. (May not take it, but I will listen.) I am open to being taught by a teacher or mentor. But I will NOT be treated like an errant child.

Time to shop for a new browser! The reviews say Opera is blazing fast….

box-shadow is a new property introduced in CSS3 that can dynamically render a true alpha-blended sha

box-shadow
is a new property introduced in CSS3 that can dynamically render a true alpha-blended shadow around block-level elements. Rendering the shadow right in the browser instead of using images saves bandwidth, and also makes it much easier to adjust – just change a few values in the CSS.

WebKit-based browsers (namely Safari and Chrome) offer preliminary support for
box-shadow
, as does Firefox 3.5. Note, however, that the property isn’t finalized, so you must use vendor-specific prefixes for the time being:
-webkit-box-shadow
for Safari/Chrome and
-moz-box-shadow
for Firefox.

box-shadow
requires four values: the color of the shadow, the horizontal and vertical offsets of the shadow, and the blur radius. Here’s an example:

p {
	background: #eee;
	height: 100px;
	margin: 0 auto;
	width: 200px;
	-moz-box-shadow: #000 0 0 20px;
	-webkit-box-shadow: #000 0 0 20px;
}

Again, the property isn’t finalized, so this code won’t validate. In addition, the results may not look identical across all browsers – for example, the corner shadows look a bit rough in Chrome, but render nicely in Safari and Firefox.

Still, this is an easy, simple way to add a subtle bit of flair to your web designs. I’m using it right now on this very site.

Current numbers are available on the Performance Snapshot page.

Summary, relative to Firefox 3.5:

Warm startup: For Mac, 36% better on 3.6 and 35% better on 3.7. For Windows, 5% and 5%. Flat on Linux. Also, Warm startup for Mac on 3.6 is a whopping 13% better than last week, due to the landing of bug 517804.

Cold startup: For Mac, 20% better on both 3.6 and 3.7. For Windows, not measuring yet. For Linux, we’re seeing a regression of ~9% across branch and trunk in the snapshot but not on the graphs, so I need to figure out where the discrepancy is.

This week’s activity:

Ryan Flint put a patch to minify JS on bug 524858, not working yet, but significantly reduced the size of shipped JavaScript files.

Projects in a holding pattern:

JARification: David abandoned moving JS modules into a JAR file, since those files are fastloaded. However, since we want things like post-extension-install restarts to be fast, and those cause fastload cache invalidation, we might want to do things like this anyways. I filed a bug for the same treatment for components. These are lower priority, since they’re not the normal startup case. Follow along with all JAR-ification via the tracker bug.

Startup Timeline: No updates, still not landed. Add [ft] in the whiteboard of your bug w/ the function names you want timed and David will generate it and update the bug.

Static Analysis: No progress on bug 506128. David needs to file a bug with the final log of named-yet-uncalled functions.

Dirty Profile Testing: No progress. Need to list scenarios, file bugs for each, generate Talos config patches and profile data, and then move it into Rel-Eng territory. Also, need to get a separate Tinderbox tree, since it’s going to cause a bazillion new columns.

Joel Reymont noted in bug 513076 that there are serious drawbacks to getting our libraries in the dyld shared cache on Mac, so has deprioritized that work.

Botemedel i Firefox

Mozilla seems to have hit a sweet spot with Personas, the theme engine add-on for Firefox and Thunde

Mozilla seems to have hit a sweet spot with Personas, the theme engine add-on for Firefox and Thunderbird. While the browser had customization options before and themes support from the early stages, most people weren’t using them, either because they found it complicated or found the selection of themes was rather lacking. In just several months though, 10 million people have customized their browsers with Personas and the number of available designs is staggering.

“Since Personas was launched earlier this year, over 10 million people around the globe have chosen to personalize their Firefox by downloading Personas. Nearly 35,000 designs were contributed from artists at all levels of experience from all parts of the world (over 1,000 designs / week). Nearly 40 affinity brands, including Harry Potter, Bob Marley, Lady Gaga, and Greenpeace have added their content to the gallery. Localization community has diligently translated the add-on into over 25 languages; Personas website will be localized by the end of the year,” Mozilla’s Suneel Gupta and Myk Melez listed some of the team’s achievements.

The Mozilla Labs team just released the latest version of the popular add-on, Personas 1.4 which brought several updates and enhancements mostly related to the user experience. With so many designs it’s getting harder to chose just one but, luckily, now you don’t have to as you can let the add-on periodically change the theme from a pool of favorites you selected. The latest version also enables users to follow an artist they like so that they’re notified whenever a new design is available.

Mozilla Labs is becoming increasingly important to the open-source organization and Personas is certainly one of the most popular projects to come out of it. In just half a year, the team managed not only to create a solid add-on, but also to set up the online gallery to host the designs. In fact, Mozilla is so confident in the project that the functionality is now integrated with the upcoming Firefox 3.6, which will allow users to change the look of their browsers with just one click without having to install the add-on.
