Until I saw this post , I was sorely missing the duplicate tab for firefox. It was near the top of my most loved firefox extensions till firefox 2.x. The addons page for this extension said it does not support 3.5. Well, and then I learnt 3.5 has a built in duplicate tab feature.

Just press the ctrl key and hold the tab you want to duplicate, drag and drop it to the place/area you want the new duplicate tab to appear. And thats it!!..

Top national news stories today are about Al Franken being declared the winner in the Minnesota Senate Race, Iraq marking the withdrawl of US troops from cities, and Iran Iran Moving to Preclude Further Public Defiance.

At last glance, of these stories, only Al Franken made the top 5 Google searches.

Americans seem to be more interested in checking out pictures of Maria Belen Chapur, the “other”woman in the life of South Carolina Governor Mark Stanford,  and a calorie reduction diet plan.  The search for “Michael Jackson Autopsy Photo” came in 7th last time I looked, and rounding out the 10th place was “Neverland Ranch Address“, as Jackson’s body was being taken there for public viewing.

Hottest discussions on Twitter at that same time today (June 30, 2009; 3:28pm Pacific Time) were Michael Jackson, Al Franken, Firefox 3 (the latest update to Mozilla’s search engine), and #iranelection.

What significance do these statistics have on Socia Media Marketing?

It didn’t surprise me that America was searching for pictures of Maria Belen Chapur, and more information about Al Franken, and Michael Jackson.  This wasn’t the first time Michael Jackson had two simultaneous top-10 hits.  But I was surprised that “calorie restriction diet plan” was ranked #2 when I checked;  ”David Murdock”, the 85 year old billionaire was in position #4, followed by “Frank M. Lombard”,  A Duke University official, and “Lastings Milledge” in the #5 slot.

Then I dug deeper to uncover why these particular searches were Google’s top 10.  Numbers 2 & 4 are directly related to today’s Oprah Broadcast which featured 85 year old Murdock and his reduced calorie diet.  Frank M. Lombard, associate director of Duke University’s Center for Health Policy took the number 4 spot after being arrested for allegedly offering his 5-year-old adopted son for sex on the Internet,  and Lastings Milledge hit # 5 after being traded today to the Pittsburgh Pirates by the Washington Nationals.

So what?  I hear you ask.  Here’s what.  Social Media (which includes search, social networking, blogging, micro blogging and so much more) is, at this writing, still being driven by mass media.

Want a huge boost in search?  Get yourself on Oprah.  Want to keep pictures of your “mister” or “mistress” private?  Then A) don’t be a public person and B) if you are a public person don’t be stupid.   Want to keep your name clean?  Then you need to be clean.

We have a fascination with the unusual.  The unusual is newsworthy.  Good or bad, the public will search out and talk about the unusual.

As you look at your company’s total marketing efforts (not just social marketing) are you able to claim that your company is “unusual”?  That’s what it takes today to break through the clutter, become noticed, and get talked about (in a good way).

It goes beyond your mission statement.  In this “wired” world you need to really dial in to what makes your company different, interesting, even exceptional, and then exploit the hell out of it.

Two examples here in the Northwest stand out.  PEMCO Insurance (about which I have blogged in the past) and Group Health Cooperative, a Seattle based health care system that coordinates care and coverage for it’s members.  Both companies are well respected, and though their marketing strategies and execution are quite different, they each focus on what makes them “unusual”, or unique, in their niche.

PEMCO has long focused on “safe” drivers.  They offer exceptional customer service, especially when you need to make a claim.  And because they target “safe” insurance “bets” their rates are typically amazingly low when compared to their competition.  This combination of low rates AND exceptional customer service makes PEMCO unusual when compared to other companies selling insurance in the region.  PEMCO exploits their unique offerings in print, broadcast, online and throughout the social media spectrum including Twitter and Facebook, and their non-traditional insurance industry website: we’re a lot like you.com.  They increase awareness through their unique mass media advertising campaign.

Group Health is a bit more traditional in their approach, yet they are enjoying great success by highlighting what makes them unusual.  Like all health care providers, Group Health strives for positive outcomes, but where they are unusual is in their committment to Transforming Health Care for the Future.

Their current consumer marketing is tied to that transformation as they tout their unique Electronic Health Record System.  The “EHR” systems, which are being introduced in other health care environments and make up a big part of the Obama Health Plan, the Group Health system already reaches across all of their group-practice sites with  integrated best-practice alerts, decision supports, and electronic prescribing.  Patients have on-line access to health information from the EHR, can schedule appointments, refill prescriptions, retrieve lab test results, and securely make contact with clinicians via e-mail.

Group Health’s Electronic Health Record System makes them more than “just” a provider of health care.  It allows them to offer integrated services throughout their system.  Patient records are readily available for ALL specialists to see.

In health care, better information leads to fewer medical mistakes and better outcomes.  Because of the Group Health EHR system, their doctors spend less time preparing paperwork and more time with patients.  In today’s world that is unique!

Unless your company is beautiful and 1) is having an affair with one of 50 US Governors, 2) can get Oprah’s attention or 3) have just been cleared by the US Supreme court to take your seat in the US Senate, you might want to focus attention on a more attainable goal.

Make your company unique, and let the world know why your company is truly unusual.  Use traditional media to get the word out and social media to further your objectives.  The combined marketing initiatives will work, IF you are truly unusual.

If you are a Windows user, and your favorite browser happens to have a name Firefox 3, here is neat hack which you can use to tweak your Firefox install for maximum speeds and improved efficiency.. Don’t fret because this hack is really simple and doesn’t involve anything more than a couple of minutes of your time. Well I’m going to discuss about a freeware called FireTune, from Totalidea Software, which can give your Firefox browser some shots of adrenaline.

As you might already know most Firefox hacks involve messy fiddling up with options in about:config and there are a gazillion things than can go wrong and mess up with your Firefox install. Instead of dealing with all that mess, Firetune simply asks you a few questions about your computer and connection speed, then automatically configures Firefox for optimal performance—in seconds (No, Seriously!!).

 FireTune does not muck up with Firefox executable file, or any other binary file, so you don’t have to worry that it’s going to turn the browser to a toast.

To get started download Firetune from here. Shut down all instances of Firefox and then fire up Firetune. It would be a good idea to back up your original configuration before you make any changes…

Now that you have backed up the configuration, select whether you have a fast Internet connection and a fast computer, or not. If you have at least a 1.5-GHz processor, 512MB or more of memory, and a reasonably fast broadband connection, select Fast Computer/Fast Connection.

Browse through pages that usually used to be slow earlier. I’m sure you will see substantial improvements in the speeds. I’m sure you will find the overall experience of using Firefox much better, not that it was bad earlier!..

Now you must be wondering why many browsers are inherently built slow.. My guess is that coders build it for the people using the slowest internet connection, so that Firefox doesn’t render pages partially for the users.

these are with the latest versions released of each software, Iron 1.0.155.0, and Chrome 1.0.154.48 (notice the higher verison number of Iron)

Since SRWare Iron is based on chromium, and that in turn on  WebKit, which apparently has page zoom available in its nightly builds, we could be seeing the much required page zoom feature in Google Chrome soon (so also in Apple’s Safari, since it uses the same framework -  WebKit )

I currently am not comfortable using Chrome as my primary web-browser, due to the lack of many basic functionalities.

Another reason could be that it is not currently available on Linux, which i often use

Не так давно были времена когда информация передавалась из рук в руки с помощью 3,5 дюймового кейсика под название — флопи диск. Помниться мне приходилось делать проекты таким образом, чтобы часть его помещалась на дискетку, дл дальнейшей распечатки. Это был кошмар!

Видимо именна эта ностальгия по тем временам овладела турецким дизайнером Mehmet Gozetlik, на создании целой серии постеров в честь 3,5 дюймового диска.

Он даже решил подсчитать сколько дискет потребуется для современных программ:
iTunes 8.02 — 46 дикет
Adobe Photoshop CS4 — 358 дискет
Sims 3 — 1760 дискет
Fiefox 3 — 12 дискет + 38 дискет для его дополнений.

حدود یک هفته از آومدن سال نوی میلادی میگذره ، امروز یه مطلب در سایت لایف هکر دیدم که خیلی برام جالب بود توی این پست چند تا از بهترین نرم افزارها که در سال 2008 (سالی که گذشت)به صورت نسخه بتا(آزمایشی) ارائه شده بودن معرفی شده که من هم مثل خیلی های دیگه دوست دارم با نسخه نهایی این نرم افزارها کار کنم ، امیدوارم نسخه نهایی این نرم افزارها در سال 2009 یعنی همین امسال منتشر بشه (اگه منتشر نشده، مخصوصا ویندوز7 ) و این ممکن نیست جز استفاده نسخه آزمایشی این نرم افزارها توسط کابران حرفه ای.

خوب اولین نسخه آزمایشی مربوط بود به Firefox3 که در ژوئن 2008 معرفی شد که نسخه نهایی اون هم در سال 2008 منتشر شد و تونست رکورد دانلود در 24 ساعت رو در کتاب رکوردهای گینس به نام خودش ثبت کنه. بنیاد موزیلا این مرورگر رو به صورت کاملا منبع باز(Open source) عرضه کرد.

خوب حتما همه اسم ویندوز بعدی مایکروسافت رو شنیدید قبل از انتشار رسمی نسخه آزمایشی این سیستم عامل در چند هفته گذشته توسط مایکروسافت، نسخه آزمایشی قدیمی تری از این سیستم عامل که در اختیار تعداد کمی از متخصصان قرار داده شده بود سر از سرویس های اشتراک گذاری فایل در آورد و به لطف این سرویس ها در اختیار عموم قرار گرفت

خوب می رسیم به سیستم عامل های منبع باز و معروف ترین آنها یعنی ابونتو. انتشار دو نسخه آزمایشی از این سیستم عامل باعث خوشحالی طرفداران نرم افزارهای منبع باز شد این 2 نسخه تفاوت زیادی با هم ندارند البته باید بگم که نسخه interpeid ibex=8.10 جدیدتر بود.

خوب می رسیم به قسمت مورد علاقه خیلی ها یعنی جنگ مرورگرها(انگار شرکتهای نرم افزاری بزرگ می خوان قدرتشون رو توی مرورگر خودشون نشون بدن) ، اولین نسخه آزمایشی مرورگر گوگل در سپتامبر 2008 ارائه شد . گوگل کروم هم در آواخر  سال 2008 از حالت آزمایشی خارج شد.

رسیدیم به سرویسی که آرزوی هر وبلاگ نویسه یعنی سرویس میزبانی فایل.به دلیل امکانات بسیار عالی در مورد DropBox در وبلاگها مطالب زیادی هست حتی در ویلاگ های فارسی ، بیشترین تعداد کامنتها در لایف هکر مربوط می شه به پستی که در همین مورد توسط لایف هکر داده شده که بیشتر کامنتها درخواست دعوتنامست. برای استفاده محافظت شده نیاز به دعوت نامه دارید ولی برای میزبانی فایل عمومی نیاز به دعوت نامه ندارید.

Today I make a decision , I leave Opera browser and back to Firefox browser

I had use Opera 2 year already , I love his speed , I love his hotkey ( most love key ‘1′ and ‘2′ )

and also love his Ctrl + Z function for re-open closed page

re-open closed page is most important function at my PC

2 years ago , there has no browser have this function ( maybe just I don’t know )

it added the hotkey ctrl + shift + T to re-open the closed browser

(but I still love Opera Bookmark search function , it’s more powerful than firefox bookmark search )

so I change all my setting to Firefox 3 again

I use Firefox. It’s at version 3.x. I had an add-on that worked with previous versions of Firefox that would save information about a webpage into my Endnote library. Well, it broke. So, I hacked it.

Wer auf einer ASPX Seite mehrere Controls (.ascx) laufen lässt, ist vielleicht schon auf die Problematik gestossen, dass in mehreren Controls Eingaben des Benutzers notwendig sind. Wird die Eingabe innerhalb eines Controls mit Enter bestätigt, feuert anstelle des gewünschten Click Events jedoch ein beliebiger Button auf der Seite.

Nebst der Möglichkeit, dieses Problem mit eigenem Javascript zu umgehen, existiert seit ASP.net 2.0 eine weitaus elegantere Möglichkeit: Das DefaultButton Property im Form-Tag. Hier wird einfach die ID eines Buttons innerhalb der Form eingetragen.

Bei mehreren Controls funktioniert dies jedoch nicht mehr korrekt, da mehrere DefaultButtons definiert werden müssten (einer pro Control). Um das Problem zu umgehen, wird jedes einzelne Control in ein asp:panel gepackt, denn auch das Panel Control verfügt über das entsprechende DefaultButton Property.

Beispiel:

Wird nun nach der Eingabe eines Strings in die Textbox Enter gedrückt, feuert automatisch der Click Event des Default Buttons. Ganz simpel also.

Es gibt allerdings eine etwas merkwürdige Einschränkung: Wird als DefaultButton ein Button vom Typ LinkButton eingetragen, funktioniert die ganze Geschichte in FF3 und Safari leider nicht mehr. Verwendet man einen normalen Button, wird der richtige Event in allen Browsern gefeuert.

Apriamo explorer risorse—>strumenti—>opzioni—>Mostra file nascosti di sistema
Adesso dobbiamo cercare firefox e le sue cartelle nascoste:
C:\Documents and Settings\Nome Utente\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xf1tr7xb.default\chrome\

Ora all’interno di questa cartella copiate il file creato prima UserChrome.css

Riavviate firefox e avrete la doppia barra come la mia in figura:

Mozilla Firefox ha liberado la version beta 2 de Firefox 3.1. “La beta pública de Mozilla,el primer navegador web en incorporar un modo de navegación privado [Private Browsing Mode],está siendo puesta a disposición del público en general hoy,aunque,aun no sea oficial”.Esta version también incluye TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, para el contenido web,activada por defecto.Si desea activarla para XUL/chrome, ir a about: config, buscar “JIT” y cambiar el valor de XUL/chrome a ‘true’.

Um bei Webprojekten die Crossbrowser-Kompatibilität zu überprüfen, ist zwangsläufig die Betrachtung der Pages in mehreren Browsern notwendig. Wird das Projekt kompiliert und mit dem lokalen ASP.NET Development Server ausgeführt, startet das Projekt standardmässig im Internet Exporer. Kopiert man nun die Url und versucht die Seite in FireFox 3 zu laden, dauert der Ladevorgang aussergewöhnlich lange.

Hier die Lösung für das Problem: in FireFox 3 muss lediglich IPv6 deaktiviert werden. Um dies zu tun, einfach in der Adresszeile “about:config” eingeben und mit einem Doppelklick auf networks.dns.disable.ipv6 den Wert auf true setzen. Nun funktioniert das Projekt gleich schnell wie im IE.

Firefox address bar Bookmarks = Incredibly Annoying!

I’m sure there are some users who find this useful, but considering I have, literally, a hundred+ bookmarks and I get to see this every time I enter in any character, it’s really annoying.

For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about…

Well intentioned, but annoying for me

I keep all of them organized into folders so I always find what I’m looking for. This was really unnecessary for me.

So how to turn it off?

Go to your about config > search for urlbar > select browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped and set it to true.

In about:config, find browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped and set it to true

There… Problem solved!

Like I said before, there are plenty of people who would find this useful. But I’m not one of them. I’m sure a lot of others out there aren’t either.

Update

On second thought, that number of a hundred+ bookmarks may be slightly off…

Ik wil jullie iets cools vertellen over een programma (free source) die je vertelt of jouw website een teruglink krijgt of niet.
Voordat ik verder hierop ga kun je naar mijn andere blog gaan voor meer tips en info over zoekmachines, HTML for dummie, etc..
lindbergh.hyves.nl zo, teruglinks zijn ideaal in het hebben daarvan omdat de grote zoekmachines je dan hoger gaan waarderen.
Teruglinks zijn dus andere sites die naar jouw site linken.
Hoe meer teruglinks, hoe meer punten je scoort bij google hoe hoger je wordt geplaats in zoekmachines.
Nu komt het…al die moeite die je heb gedaan op andere sites om een teruglink te krijgen van google robots kan een teleurstelling zijn, omdat vele site gebruiken “nofollow” tag in hun head sector, daarmee wordt gezegt tegen de google robots niet meer te volgen.
Dit is niet fair, en je weet niet welke site wel en welke site niet dit in hun head sector hebben.
Of niet. Nu is er een programma die dat kan zeggen, genaamd Search status maar werkt alleen voor firefox brower, niet voor internet explorer.

De vraag is hoe kom je aan goede teruglinks. Zoek naar websites die links plaatsen gerelateerd aan het onderwerp van jouw website. Met Search Status kun je zien of het wel zo is. Ook links op community sites en portalen zijn vaak wel te verkrijgen, b.v. hyves of worldpress.

Well, firefox 3 has the bookmarks now stored in places.sqlite in your profile folder. Since I often import bookmarks from my delicious account, I end up with lots of duplicates. Now I did something about it – and hopefully correct:

1) open places.sqlite with sqlite manager addin
2) Create a temporary table with the following sql. It will merge duplicate rows with the smallest value for dateAdded and maximum of lastModified. And min(b.rowid) assures that there will be only one record per title!

CREATE TEMP TABLE tmp_bks as select id, type, fk,parent,position,title, keyword_id,folder_type, min(dateAdded) as dateAdded, max(lastmodified) as lastModified from moz_bookmarks where fk notnull and title not null group by title
