Summary

A hidden truth.
Mortal enemies.
Doomed love.

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki, a descendant of dragons whose greatest defense is her secret ability to shift into human form.

Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will’s dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She’ll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.

Review

I wanted to read this book because I’ve never read a book about dragons before and it sounded really interesting. I’m not sure what I expected but this was a little different to my expectations, whatever those were.

The Story
This story was interesting, it had so many cool elements that I liked. But I was disappointed that the plot line was practically the romance. I do find books a little bit boring when the romance takes the lead in the story. There was the story with the Draki and Jacinda trying to find a way of keeping her Draki alive without being selfish to her sister, Tamra, and her mother. But it wasn’t a strong enough plot line to drive the book in my opinion. The romance took over.
So I was pretty disappointed to find that this is only a love story, especially with all the cool Draki things going on.

The Draki
I loved the whole idea of the Draki! I thought it was so interesting and so cool! The fact that they aren’t dragons themselves but are descended from dragons is how the whole idea works I think. They ‘manifest’ into their original forms whenever their emotions are heightened and whenever they are scared.
I love how specific their strengths and weaknesses were. Draki need living open space. Living earth, mountains, fresh air. They need this to survive, otherwise their draki dies and they become a normal human.
The Draki are hunted, the hunters are one of their enemies that hunt them for fun and for their hide’s.

The Romance
The romance is practically insta-love! Man was I disappointed. Jacinda falls all over Will before she’s even had a proper conversation with him. He declares to her that he likes her and that she must be his before they’ve really spent any time with each other. I don’t think those feelings had enough time to develop to get to that point when this happens.
Yeah I get that they are drawn to each other but I found myself sighing and rolling my eyes in a bad way whenever Jacinda thought of Will. Then he became her every thought and the story suddenly got a little boring, up until the action picked up.

The Writing
The writing was so detailed when it came to Jacinda manifesting, I loved that we got all of the information, it made me feel like I knew exactly what she was feeling and exactly what it felt like to manifest. I was never tripping over words or having to re-read to understand what was going on which is great.

Overall, I did enjoy reading this book. It was interesting and fun, even though I was disappointed for parts and I knew what was going to happen at the end, I will be picking up the next book to see what Jacinda ends up doing!

Firelight is an intriguing read that kept me wanting to read more when it came to the Draki. The Draki are such interesting creatures and Jordan has done a nice job of keeping my interest piqued.

If you liked Twilight then I think you could enjoy this book!

Let’s swim in our underwear, in the middle of winter. Drink wine from mugs in the afternoon.

Let’s roll down the car windows and sing. Dance like we’re drunk when we aren’t, and have long conversations with interesting strangers. Take pictures and pull faces, not just smile sedately.

When we’re apart we can send postcards in the mail, so that we have more than bills in the letter box. We’ll greet each other with all the excitement of friends reunited after several years, even if it was only last Tuesday.

Let’s meet up again in faraway places; take off with empty suitcases and no maps. Make friends in small towns that we’ll never remember the names of and then slip away into the night.

When it rains, we’ll throw away our umbrellas. We’ll walk and get soaked right through, all curling hair and water-filled shoes. We can laugh at commuters hurrying and tripping through puddles while we bust out our best Singing in the Rain rendition and make up our own musical.

Let’s stay up all night, and sleep in all morning. Have cake for lunch and pancakes for dinner. Light candles. Star gaze. Get lost in imaginative ramblings. Fall asleep talking.

The Need It To Read It ARC Giveaway Series is a new feature I hope to offer on a regular basis. I have stockpiled a few ARCs to kick this thing off, so fingers crossed that I will continue to have some great titles to offer.

I have a paperback uncorrected proof of Hidden by Sophie Jordan. It’s the third installment of the Firelight series. The important thing is that the story is absolutely beautiful, if you loved the series so far there is a good chance you will love this one as well.

Firelight (#1 Darkest London series) by Kristen Callihan (Forever, 2012) The world of gaslight roman

Firelight (#1 Darkest London series) by Kristen Callihan (Forever, 2012)

The world of gaslight romance fiction is not very large, and is usually populated by readers who also enjoy steampunk, that wonderful blend of alternate history, science fiction and fantasy. I have lamented before in this blog that finding adult authors of steampunk or gaslight (as opposed to the many excellent young adult authors in these genres) is sometimes difficult, but earlier this year with her debut offering, Kristen Callihan set the romance world aflame with her unusual, emotional romance, Firelight.

Happily this year, we have the long awaited sequel, Moonglow, coming out on July 31st, and was fortunate enough to get access to an Advanced Reader Copy via NetGalley to give you a hint at how great it is.

Kristen Callihan uses a master’s touch to paint a vivid picture of 1880s London with a gaslight twist. The supernatural, both good and evil, abound in this world, with vivid characters and plot twists causing readers to gasp at the unexpected. The aptly named Darkest London series reminds me of the gothic romances popularized in the 19th century, filled with shadows and a possibly doomed love. The difference in these books is that its the women doing the saving (and not just an emotional rescue of the hero), so we have a delightful update for the 21st century sensibility.

Firelight tells the story of Miranda Ellis, a willowy redhead reduced from a comfortable upper middle class lifestyle to stealing for her father. Her mother dead and her two older sisters married, one in a love match and the other sold to the highest bidder to a man three times her age, Miranda is lonely and so tired of the life she is forced to lead. She carries the guilt of contributing to her family’s financial ruin by having been responsible for burning down the warehouse that housed most of her father’s imported goods, and this fact is what allowed her father to blackmail her into a life of theft. Despite feeling like she is in her own private hell, she is nevertheless incensed when her father announces that she will marry the infamous Lord Archer, a reclusive noble who is renowned for having some type of deformity necessitating his wearing a solid black mask.

Benjamin Archer is still paying for a mistake he made years ago, but the only thing that made him feel remotely alive was meeting a feisty nineteen-year-old girl in an alley when he was on his way to kill her father three years ago. He has searched for a cure all this time, in order to claim her as a whole man, but cannot deny his need any longer. If he can just have Miranda near him as his wife, his life would be infinitely less painful.

And, oh, how hard they fall for each other. Archer can be silver tongued devil when he is ready to finally be honest with Miranda, and it’s no wonder the revelation of his feelings result in her being even more in love with him.

“I lied. I lied when I said your beauty does not affect me. I look at you, and I’m breathless, dizzy from it. I want to kneel at your feet and worship you. While the baser part of me wants to fling up your skirts and stick my cock in you until we forget our names…But none of that matters,” he said, trembling before her, “because every day that I am with you, I am more convinced that God made you just for me. For in ninety years on this earth, no one has made me feel the way you do, as if every day is an adventure.”

Who wouldn’t do everything they could to save this man from his past mistakes? And there are major forces lining up against them. An entire secret club of men are afraid at Archer’s return to England, a killer is framing him for one gruesome murder after another, Miranda’s brother-in-law is the police inspector investigating the case, Archer has a past lover bent on Miranda’s death and Archer’s return to her, and the son of one of his enemies, Ian Mckinnon, is more than a little fascinated by Miranda and is clear in his pursuit of her.

Ember (#0.5 Darkest London series) by Kristen Callihan (Forever, 2012)

This is a beautiful, dark romance between two people who have kept secrets for so long that they are almost incapable of opening up to one another. The first time I read it, I was actually frustrated by the focus on the revelation of what Archer hides behind his mask (and the fact that it comes toward the end of the book) as well as how long it took for the two of them to be physically intimate with one another.

The latter frustration is easily a result of the amazing sexual tension Kristen Callihan builds between our hero and heroine and I imagine is more of a compliment to her writing ability, however! Once I understood the more gothic nature of the series, this frustration dissolved and I was instead impressed by the incredibly fresh approach to gaslight romance that the author employs.

Because of the rich plethora of secondary characters, I was happy when Callihan released Ember, a prequel novella focusing on Miranda’s interim life between meeting Archer in the alley by her house and his reemergence into her life. At a mere $.99 for a chunky 100 pages, this novella should be a must-read by anyone who has enjoyed Firelight, particularly due to the fact that it fills in many holes for us.

In it we have the fleshed out story of Miranda’s meeting with her East End friend Billy Finger who teaches her how to steal more effectively as well as the alluded-to story of her failed romance with her ex-fiancee. I definitely would not recommend reading this work prior to Firelight; it is undoubtedly a prequel that gains more impact with a reading after the first book in the series.

Moonglow (#2 Darkest London series) by Kristen Callihan (Forever, 2012)

The second book in the series, Moonglow, focuses on Miranda’s sister Daisy, a lush blonde finally free of her cruel older husband and ready to emerge from the mandatory year of mourning proscribed by Victorian society. On her way to a racy demimonde party, her handsome date pulls her into an alleyway for some pre-party friskiness but to her astonishment they are attacked by a werewolf, a fact that registers prior to losing consciousness.

Lord Ian Mckinnon is having some, er, performance issues. The red-headed whores he usually employs for sexual release aren’t doing it for him anymore and the results are downright embarrassing. A lone wolf who has rejected his birthright of alpha of his father’s pack, he goes for a run in London and is attracted by the sent of blood and a rogue were. He discovers Daisy beneath a heap of other bodies and brings her home with him to treat her wounds and discover more about the attack.

Daisy knows all about Lord Ian Mckinnon from her sister Miranda and her brother-in-law, Benjamin Archer, so naturally she’s wary of the man who attempted to drive a wedge between them. She can’t help being attracted to his incredibly handsome face and hard, muscled body, but it’s the streak of loneliness and wit that really draws her in. Daisy is hesitant to give into his pursuit, not only because she has her husband’s cruel punishments tied to the carnal nature of women still in her mind, but also because she has no desire to be a substitute for her unattainable sister.

To Ian’s astonishment, he realizes quickly that he is not interested in Miranda anymore in the slightest, and it is Daisy’s golden hair and lush curves which have awakened his dormant sexual desire. That his inner wolf is both excited and calmed by her presence also convinces him that she is meant for him. But Ian carries over a century of personal baggage. His wife and son of many years ago, both dead now in rejection of Ian’s werewolf nature, haunt him still. But he still makes the decision to fight all his history and claim Daisy for his own.

“I am afraid, aye? Bloody afraid of history repeating itself.” He wrapped his arms around her waist and held on tightly. “But I want you more. Do you understand? I feel free when I am with you. Happy. You are the gift I never saw coming.”

This book’s pacing is very similar to Firelight, with the same dark, gothic overtones which focus on the external conflicts with the development of the romance taking place within that framework. And there is no lack of conflict. Ian has the complicated relationship with his pack to negotiate, a rogue werewolf to subdue, the involvement of other supernatural creatures bent on using the situation to their advantage, Daisy discovers that her sister Miranda isn’t the only one with supernatural powers, Ian is being framed for the werewolf murders since he’s been the first one on the scene of the deaths, Daisy is targeted as Ian’s weakness, and on top of it all, Daisy’s health is heavily compromised. Yikes!

I did feel like I had a few areas that went unaddressed for me. I would have liked more details about Daisy’ husband’s cruelty – was it just the one time or were there other incidents? She had a strong inner voice she was fighting regarding her sexual nature and it seemed like understanding her abuse would give more insight to her character. Also, Daisy alludes to the fact that she had been intimate with a few men prior to her marriage. Miranda was not a virgin coming to Archer (it was her fiancee she slept with), while I get the impression that Daisy had more of a couple of flings. Was she in love with these two men? Is this supposed to indicate a more carnal quality in her makeup? Why wasn’t she worried about getting pregnant? It just seemed like a missing piece to me that would have helped my understanding of her.

However, those were only minor blips on the radar. As with Firelight, the intimacy and big mystery reveal/supernatural resolution to the situation occurs quickly at the end of the book and the reader is left turning the pages quickly and letting her family know it’s take out for dinner tonight. Ian and Daisy are fabulous characters who are easy to love, and it’s clear that the next book, one focusing on older sister Poppy and her now estranged husband, Inspector Winston Lane (titled Winterglaze and due out in 2013) will be just as riveting, probably focusing on the Society for Supernaturals Poppy belongs to. I can’t wait to get more delicious gaslight romance from this source. Thank you, Kristen Callihan!

Vanish is book #2 in the Firelight Series. If you missed my review of book #1, Firelight, you can read it here.

Okay, I literally just put down this book and felt an immediate and undeniable urge to talk (more like gush) about it. I loved Vanish on so many different levels and for me, it exceeded all of my expectations I had when I left off with Firelight. The one thing in Firelight that always pushed my buttons was that the main character, Jacinda, is a draki (dragon who shape shifts into human form) and we don’t get to learn about her history or learn about other draki. Thankfully Vanish takes care of this issue because the whole novel is based off of the world of the draki (which was so awesome…for everyone except Jacinda).

Stop and think…do you want to know what happens in this book? If not, don’t read ahead. <— Spoiler Alert!

The novel begins with a huge twist as Jacinda’s twin sister Tamra manifests into a draki for the first time. Not only does she finally manifest, but she has the rarest and most coveted power of all the drakis, she’s a shader. Once back in the confines of the draki ‘village’ Jacinda and Tamra are separated as Tamra begins her training. Jacinda’s mother takes a turn for the worst and starts developing a pretty serious problem with alcohol and it’s clear that she is deeply depressed. As the story progresses Jacinda and Cassian form a new, stronger relationship, but Jacinda refuses to forget about Will, the human and draki hunter she falls in love with in Firelight. When Tamra first manifested, Will and all the other hunters were present so Tamra’s power should’ve erased everyone’s memory of that night. At least, that’s what Jacinda thought until Will stumbles upon the draki settlement unannounced and unwelcome. Tamra and the other shaders attempt to erase his memory, thinking he’s just a lost hiker, and send him on his way. Cassian then helps Jacinda sneak out to tell Will to never come back. Of course that doesn’t happen, because Will can remember everything and he vows to run away with her and help her escape. They meet again a few weeks later, only Will doesn’t show up and Jacinda was followed by Cassian’s brat of a sister Miram. Jacinda and Miram are both caught and injured by Will’s family of hunters but Will manages to rescue Jacinda. They plan to run away together when guilt starts to change Jacinda. She decides to go home and face the draki, and they decide to clip her wings. Cassian saves her by forcing Jacinda to bond to him. After the bonding, Jacinda and Cassian have an emotional link to each other, but Jacinda and Tamra decide to escape with Will to rescue Miram and find their mother, who was banished upon Jacinda’s second return. In a crazy turn of events Cassian ends up leaving with Tarma, Jacinda and Will as they begin their journey to rescue Miram.

From start to finish, this book was packed with action and love triangles and emotions like you wouldn’t believe! In Firelight, I was a pretty big supporter of Will, but deep down I knew I could easily be persuaded onto Cassian’s team. Well, Cassian won my heart in Vanish. I’m just so torn! Will is the right choice for Jacinda, but Cassian, in his own way, is just as perfect for her! I’m hoping in the last novel Hidden, Will shows more powers and becomes more of an equal with Jacinda and that Cassian falls in love with…maybe Tamra? Gosh I just don’t know, I’m rooting for Cassian, but I know Will should win Jacinda in the end. It’s just so unfair! I love Cassian as the brooding Prince who actually fell in love with Jacinda, not the fire breathing potential mate. But Will and Jacinda have that ‘I’m all alone in this big world’ complex going on that makes them fit together so well. I don’t know, all I do know is that I’m glad I’m not Sophie Jordan because I have no idea how I would finish this series.

I’m hoping in the next book we see a nicer side to the Tamra-Jacinda relationship. The first two novels they were always bickering or Tamra was angry at Jacinda, which made them both all angsty and it was kind of annoying. I’m really super ecstatic that there was less high school drama in this and more dragon action instead. I am so glad I found this series, the covers are to die for, and I just wish I could find myself a Cassian in real life. *swoon*

I read the prologue for this book a few months ago, and hot holy damn, you guys, I was over on GoodR

I read the prologue for this book a few months ago, and hot holy damn, you guys, I was over on GoodReads adding it to my “to-read” list faster than you can say “red-haired green-eyed sword-fighting heroine.”

(Sidenote: Either there are a million novels with heroines like that, or I am somehow psychically drawn to them. Another possibility: both are true.)

But seriously, hero and heroine with secrets? Magic? Alt-history Victorian London? A retelling of Beauty and the Beast, one of my favorite stories? The aforementioned red-haired, green-eyed, sword-fighting, fire-wielding heroine?

Sign me up.

For her entire life, Miranda Ellis has been able to harness the power of fire. However, one mistake demolished her family’s fortune, and Miranda has been forced into a life of petty thievery to help her father make ends meet.

That is, until the insanely wealthy (and insanely terrifying) Lord Benjamin Archer shows up and asks for Miranda’s hand. When her father gives her the choice between marriage or the streets, Miranda agrees to wed. Though she’s frightened at first, Archer shows her surprising kindness, and the two begin a tentative flirtation.

However, Archer has secrets, starting with the mask that hides his disfigured face. He becomes the prime suspect in a series of gruesome murders around London. Miranda doesn’t believe him capable of it, and dives into an investigation of her own. What she finds is a secret that could destroy her and Archer both.

Now, as I mentioned, I adore Beauty and the Beast, so I really liked the idea of a hero who wears a mask. If you like yourself dark, tortured heroes, then y’all, Lord Benjamin Archer is the man for you. Here’s a man who’s lived so long under a curse he’s almost forgotten how to be a man — until a chance encounter with a lovely young woman brings a part of him to life that he long thought dead. He hides himself under physical masks, inspiring terror everywhere he goes, because to him, fear is better than the alternative.

He wants Miranda, desperately, even though he doesn’t believe for a moment he deserves the happiness. That war within him — trying to keep his secret, trying to protect her from himself even as he selfishly wants to keep her near — makes me wish that there had been more from his point of view.

Miranda, our heroine, wields her beauty in such a way that nobody bothers to look past it to see her pain. As far as she’s concerned, the fire inside her is a curse, destructive and almost uncontrollable.

She’s also not a damsel in distress, thanks not only to her ability, but also her “education” on the streets. When Archer won’t tell her what’s going on, Miranda goes out sleuthing on her own. She’s just as protective of him as he is of her, trying her best to find the answers so she can help the man she loves.

And the final fight? Oh yes, my friends. Miranda, take thy pyrokinetic awesomeness and mayst thou go forth and kick some ASS.

For Miranda, Archer is the first person outside her family who has bothered to look past the surface of her beauty, and vice versa. I adored watching as they fall in love, trying to deal with their attraction and the desire to be together while still holding their secrets close to their chests. And I absolutely LOVE the way those secrets are finally revealed.

(Although I really, really wish it had happened sooner. There’s a point where you go from understanding the angst and conflict within a person to just thinking, “Will somebody put their big boy/big girl pants on and just TALK about this already?”, and Firelight toed dangerously close to that line at times.)

And the romantic scenes between the two of them? Oh so very sexy. Particularly the first kiss in the greenhouse, when Miranda FINALLY takes some initiative with her husband.

As you may be able to tell, there were occasions when Miranda’s hesitation drove me a little crazy. She would think about how much she wanted Archer, but she didn’t want to make the first move for no other reason than she didn’t want to make the first move. I can understand that to an extent, but come on.

SWEETHEART. YOU ARE MARRIED. YOU WANT TO KISS THE MAN, KISS HIM. YOU WANT TO BANG THE MAN, SEDUCE HIM.

When she did take action, I wanted to stand up and cheer (see: the aforementioned first kiss). It just seemed to take a long time to get there.

(An excellent example of “My God I’m going to get laid come hell or high water”: Jessica Trent in Lord of Scoundrels. When her husband is about to go off and leave her for a wrestling match, despite the fact that they haven’t consummated their marriage yet, she gets pissed, puts on sexy lingerie, and storms into his bedroom. The fight, seduction, and ensuing sex scene are FANTASTIC.)

However, one of my major pet peeves with romance novels is the nearly psychic bond that comes from Twu Wuv. If you’ve read any amount of romance, you’ve probably seen this: the hero and/or heroine is able to sense the other person the moment they walk into the room; they can read pages of thought and emotion from a single eye-twitch or touch.

Okay, I’m exaggerating, but still. It was like both Miranda and Archer developed ESP the moment they got married. It was difficult to tell if said ESP was because of Twu Wuv or because of something magic-related in the world. If the latter, it was never explained, which was frustrating. If the former, it went a little overboard.

One of the trickiest things to do with books like these is to balance the romance, the mystery, and the suspense well enough that it doesn’t feel like one aspect of the story drags at the expense of the others. Callihan balances her story well, never letting the mystery or the romance fall by the wayside. This is particularly awesome, considering Firelight is her debut novel.

That being said, I think more pieces to the mystery puzzle could’ve been revealed a little sooner. As it is, one of the characters had the distinct pleasure of turning into Exposition Man (with his trusty sidekick, Backstory Boy) at the end of the story. Not only that, but said character was also checking out our heroine and thinking about how beautiful she was during that time. And he is 92.

CREEPY. I was really glad to get back into Miranda’s point of view after that.

(Spoiler: Do not remind me that the hero is the same age as the guy who is “old enough to be her grandfather, great-grandfather in some families.” Okay? Because ew.)

And yet, I’m willing to forgive a lot of problems I had for three reasons: 1) I liked the characters and wanted them to be together, 2) it’s her first novel, and 3) I loved her writing style itself. It’s definitely a little darker and more angsty-romantic than I normally prefer, but it worked wonderfully for the story.

Book two in the series, Moonglow, comes out in August, and I look forward to reading that one as well.

The time has come once again. Time to add to my little family. I got new books people! I spoiled myself with my Barnes and Noble gift card from my Dad (he knows me so well) and some birthday cash from my mom and got my self the sequels to Firelight and Across The Universe. I cannot WAIT to start and finish reading these books and see where the story takes me. These are the second books in their respective series and after that there will be a third book released.

Once I have read and reviewed the books you will be able to click on the book covers to read the full review.

The first series is the Firelight Series. You can find my review of the first book, Firelight, by clicking here.

Vanish By Sophie Jordan

The next novel is from the Across The Universe Series. You can find my review for Across The Universe by clicking here.

A Million Suns By Beth Revis

Both of these books were definitely a case of beautiful cover syndrome. I read the synopsis and was interested but I knew I would get these books no matter what they were about based on the covers alone. Sadly, the Across The Universe series has decided to change their covers mid-series. I’m just happy I got to buy these beautiful covers before they were gone and changed. You can see the new version of the covers on goodreads or by clicking here.

Regardless of what the covers look like though, these stories can absolutely stand alone. I’m so so SO excited to start reading them!!! But I have to be good and read my other books first (meh). I’m just about finished with Jeremy Chikalto and The Hazy Souls, so that review will be coming soon, and then I should read Wife 22 but I might sneak in and read Vanish and A Million Suns first…hmmm… I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see! Keep an eye out for many more book reviews to come! Happy Reading!

I wrote this about a friend of mine when I was sixteen, so it’s pretty painful, but I came across it the other day and just knew I had to share it with you all, if only for a laugh. I was far from in love, but at the time I fantasized about sharing this with him beside a fire or in a hot air balloon, or something cheesy like that. But I knew I could never get up the chutzpah to actually read it to him, so I hid it away for so many years. So, without further ado!……Beautiful

The way your hair falls over your golden eyes

Darling, just know it’s my demise

You sweep it away with a shake of your head

It makes me feel what can’t be said

Your hands move over the strings of your instrument

And with each pull

I can see your heart of gold

You’re strumming the cords of this heart

I never want us to be apart

Do you know how beautiful you are?

Your concentration makes me smile

The music spoke to my heart all this while

I hear what it’s saying

But do you hear it too?

Do you know how beautiful you are?

The sun shines on your wavy brown hair

Right now I don’t have a single care

You take my hand and guide me through the dance

It makes me want to take a chance

As you smile into my spellbound eyes

Darling, just know it’s my demise

Do you know how beautiful you are?

I could have gone on forever, hand in hand

Waiting until the moon turns to sand

I never wanted the dream to end

But I awake in a world where we’re just friends

The firelight dances on your beautiful eyes

The sight makes me forget my strife

Through the years you’ve been nothing but true

I know I can always be myself with you

Your laugh, your smile, the way you say my name

With each of these I nearly go insane

Though I dream of us growing old together

I will wait in silence and be your friend forever

So with a pen in hand and a heart full of hope

Here I sat and here I wrote

Because I believe life is always an open door

And you, my darling, are worth waiting for

I told you, it’s painful, but if you’re reading this, congratulations! You made it through the whole thing! Oh, and for your edification, we’re still friends, so this poem was kind of prophetic; I never told him I liked him, I’ve effectvely talked myself out of liking him over the years, and we will always be just friends, nothing more. And I can live with that. *POP!* That was your young love bubble bursting. Sorry. But I guess now he might finally read this, so maybe a part of my fantasy came true…… But I have plenty other fantasies to keep my thoughts occupied!

Firelight by Kristen Callihan My flight trip paperback of choice during my weekend away from it all

Firelight by Kristen Callihan

My flight trip paperback of choice during my weekend away from it all was Kristen Callihan’s Firelight, which was just the right size for my +1 personal item restriction . Everyone else on the flight had their e-reader or ipad but I rocked it old school. Yep. Mostly because I didn’t want to deal with charging the nook while on vacation. I’m a lazy technology owner. But back to the book…

Firelight is part of a genre that has really caught my attention: historical paranormal romance. Historical? I love a good historical novel. Paranormal? Like that too, in good measure. Romance? It’s the best kind of “trashy” fun. All in one? My mind explodes. Firelight manages to do all this in an unexpected way. While many of the books in this genre focus on the traditional vampire/werewolf/fair folk/other legendary creature of choice, Callihan introduces a different “monster,” something more akin to Frankenstein (yes, the doctor not the creature) than Dracula.

The novel begins with a chance encounter between Miranda Ellis, daughter of a destitute merchant who just happens to have a particular talent at starting fires, and the dread Lord Archer, a man who hides behind a mask lest he reveal the horror that he has become. Of course, damaged Archer is hot, as is the spritely Miranda. Insta lust with a Beauty and the Beast twist. Unable to stop thinking about Miranda, Archer (who was about to exact his revenge on Miranda’s father before he met the intriguing daughter) comes to an agreement with Ellis–Miranda will be betrothed to him but must agree to the marriage of her own free will. See, Beauty and the Beast. They do marry and a great dynamic is formed between the couple as they come to learn each other’s secrets and admire one another’s tenacity. When a sinister murderer with links to Archer’s mystery ailment threatens to destroy the life claimed, Archer and Miranda must come to terms with their own dark pasts in order to safeguard their future.

A few cliches at the start of the novel, mostly involving the insta lust factor and a somewhat heavy-handed effort to assure the reader that the story is set in Victorian England, pea-soupers and all, soon gave way to a character-driven novel that established a true, companionate relationship between its sexy yet guilt-ridden protagonists. Neither Miranda nor Archer are innocents in this novel and that makes for an excellent connection between the two, one that adds to the overall suspense of the novel as they each try to keep their secrets while trying to make something of their marriage. Secrets are a major part of the plot, more so than the murders that drive the two together. Archer’s ailment is revealed in degrees as Miranda searches for a reason behind the murderer’s seeming desire to frame Archer. That Archer was once a scientist on a quest for immortality adds to the Frankestein-esque, man overreaching the boundaries of humanity, theme of the novel.

A prequel novella, Ember, adds further depth to the characters, though it reads more as an accompaniment to the novel rather than an introduction to it, and does a good job of addressing a few of the details that I found lacking in the plot (especially with regards to Miranda’s history and ability).

It’s an interesting world that Callihan has created and one that I want to spend some more time in.

Firelight’s FMOD software is now the most commonly used audio software in the worldwide computer games industry and is used on games such as World of Warcraft and Guitar Hero.

Firelight CEO Brett Paterson said winning the award was great recognition for his company’s global export outlook.

“Firelight is committed to identifying and pursuing new market sectors and geographical regions, and we are currently developing our presence in India and China,” he said.

“Notably, the India presence was secured via our games business, but has recently led to discussions for defence simulators.”
