A number of conversations of late have turned up the need to outline some valuable Firefox Add-ons. I did an impromptu poll and found 8 out of 10 polled browse via Firefox, while only 3 out of 10 have actually ever installed an add-on in Firefox.

So with that, here are 5 quick add-on’s for Social Media and SEO folks. Trust me; they will make your life easier.

1. ShareThis – I have sung the praises of Share This on this outlet on numerous occasions. The Firefox add-on will allow you to share any indexing page in numerous Social channels with the simple click of a button. The button stations itself to the right of your URL bar in Firefox. I use and abuse it!

2. Alexa Sparky- Say what you will about Alexa! Some say it is not completely accurate. That could be true, but I have found that when you drive your Alexa rankings down (Remember lower the better. For example this blog is ranked in the 574,000 range- while Facebook is ranked #4) you business will see a direct correlation of activities in a positive manner. For being a free service it is a great tool to give you an idea of how your web presence is doing. As for the add-on, it gives me insight right out of the gate about a website and how that business is really doing in terms of exposure.

3. NoDoFollow – Download the add-on, click on Tools and scroll down to NoDoFollow and you can see any Do follow link in grey/blue, while all NoFollow links are in red. This is valuable at seeing if your links are being tracked by Google and Bing. Keep in mind to scroll over all links in grey/blue and look at the lower left hand corner of the Firefox screen to make sure the URL is pointed to an external link. For example, when you hover your icon over a DoFollow link in Facebook, you will see it is pointing to another Facebook page- not the external link you would hope. Facebook and Twitter are virtual nonentities in the SEO world. They are however great for exposure, so don’t not use them because they can’t create in-links!

4. FireShot – Sharing is caring. Well this takes screen shot sharing to a whole new level. It has robust functionality and you can pay for it. But really…why? The free version allows you to quickly take screenshots and upload them to easycaptures.com. You can edit it and add captions incredibly easy. This is huge for Social Media reporting, PowerPoint presentations and it is..well…fun!

5. Hyperwords – This is a stellar add-on for research or to keep up on a topic based on #keyword. It adds an option to the mouse right click that will allow you to find more information related to the keyword that is important to you. For example, if you are reading an article and you would like to see Wikipedia entry for Mr. Met, highlight the word and right click, go to references and click on Wikipedia. Viola, everything you would want to know about the NY Mets mascot!

few months ago, I have installed some Firefox extensions in my firefox browser. one of the extensions is Fireshot. I got this plugin intuitively when I was searching an extension in firefox addons directory. at first running, I didn’t know the utility of this extension. I just Installed, and let it running in my browser.

and then someday I revealed something fun about this extension. I can capture a website! that was so funny since I always capture a web using manual command, fn+Prt Sc. Things that I always do, easily replaced with an extension called Fireshot.

Fireshot can be downloaded in firefox addons directory or just clicking here. be sure that you already installed Firefox 2 or above because this extension only work in firefox 2.0 and above.

after installing Fireshot, you must restart your firefox to make it enable. after that, you can enjoy it ability like edit capture, save capture, and copy capture to clipboard. fireshot only only able to capturing web and copy it, but also able to upload the capture in free public hosting, print the capture, email it, and send to configurable external editor for further processing.

Unlike other extensions, this plugin provides a set of editing and annotation tools, which let users quickly modify web captures and insert text annotations and graphical annotations. Such functionality will be especially useful for web designers, testers and content reviewers.

GreaseMonkey – دریافت

یکی از پرکاربردترین و معروف ترین افزونه های فایرفاکس که کاربر را قادر می سازد صفحات وب را بر اساس سلیقه ی خود بوسیله کدهای جاوا اسکریپت، سفارشی کند. صدها اسکریپت آماده جاوا اسکریپت در طبقه بندی های مختلف در این سایت قابل دسترسی اند که می توانید از آن ها در این افزونه استفاده کنید.

JavaScript Debugger – دریافت

همانطور که از نامش پیداست، ابزاری است برای خطایابی کدهای جاوا اسکریپت در محیط مروگر فایرفاکس. به گفته کاربران این افزونه برای خطایابی کدهای جاوا اسکریپت از فایرباگ بهتر عمل می کند.

Web Developer – دریافت

MeasureIt – دریافتی

Window Resizer – دریافت

به شما کمک می کند تا صفحه وب مورد نظرتان را در Resoulotion های استاندارد مشاهده کنید. با این افزونه می توانید صفحات خود را با دقت های استاندارد نمایشگرهای محتلف تست کنید.

OperaView - دریافت

صفحه وب جاری را در مرورگر اپرا باز می کند. با این افزونه می توانید هر چه سریعتر و راحت تر صفحه وب خود را در مرورگر اپرا امتحان کنید. بدیهی است که باید مرورگر اپرا را روی سیستم نصب داشته باشید.

IE Tab – دریافت

افزونه ای بسیار سودمند برای مشاهده صفحه وب طراحی شده در مرورگر Internet Explorer. این افزونه مروگر IE را در یک برگه فایرفاکس شبیه سازی می کند تا برای تست صفحه وب خود در IE از فایرفاکس خارج نشوید و نیازی به باز کردن مرورگر IE به صورت جداگانه نداشته باشید.

HTML Validator – دریافت

صفحه وب خود را با این افزونه از نظر استانداردهای HTML بسنجید. تعداد و نوع خطاهای HTML موجود در صفحه وب را در نوار وضعیت با استفاده از شکلک ها نمایش می دهد.

CSS Validator – دریافت

صفحه وب شما را بر اساس استاندادهای CSS بوسیله W3C CSS Validator می سنجد.

RSS Validator – دریافت
صفحه وب شما را بر اساس استانداردهای RSS بوسیله W3C RSS Validator می سنجد. وقتی یک فید RSS را در فایرفاکس باز می کنید، می توانید با کلیک راست روی صفحه و انتخاب گزینه Validate the RSS feed این کار را انجام دهید.

چطور مشترک شويم؟

I’m having some trouble deciding what Web browser to use these days.  I’ve got three that are constantly in rotation: Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Google Chrome.  Be warned: the rest of this post is just me babbling about Web browsers.  If you’re not interested, don’t bother to read any more.

I don’t really use IE for much, except when I have to download multiple files: I VASTLY prefer the IE download interface to the other options.  I don’t want my files automatically downloaded to one big “Download” folder, I want to both have controld over where they are saved and not have to navigate my way to that save point each time I’m downloading a file.  There might well be a way to alter the settings in Firefox or Chrome to do just that, but I haven’t looked into it yet.

I’ve been using Chrome the most out of the three, in part just because it felt cool to be using something so new, but also because I really do like the functionality of it.  Being able to type into the address window and get auto-complete options that include both webpages and google searches is awesome; I Google things enough that this saves a big step for me (I know, Google toolbar would do the same thing, but this way the toolbar is the same space as the address window.  So much space and time saved!).

Which brings me to Firefox.  I have a love/hate thing going with Firefox.  I’ve never thought it was a very attractive interface, and some of the functionality things bother me (the download stuff mentioned above, and other things I can’t remember).  But Firefox has a ton of add-ons and cool applications that make it incredibly useful.  For instance: Zotero, a bibliography tool that allows you to capture sources from library sites, Amazon.com, Google Books, or pretty much any Web page that has bibliographic data.  Read It Later is an add-on that lets you save links without bookmarking them, for those things you don’t have time to read, but don’t care about enough to bookmark (there are lots of these, I find).  I just found another add-on, called FireShot, which I haven’t tried yet, which might solve some of the problems I’ve anticipated for the 202C pilot program for next semester (something I’ve blogged about over here) (I just realized that, until the Composition Program site is fixed, that link won’t work.  I might re-post that blog entry here, and talk more about the project itself, later).  FireShot lets you annotate a screenshot, and share that annotated file with other people.  I’ve been struggling with a way to allow teachers to comment on student work if it is posted in the Blogs @ Penn State environment (by the way, for more about the pilot I just mentioned, check out the project’s blog page).  End notes in a “Comments” section are fine as far as they go, but they just aren’t sufficient for the intricate task of composition instruction through written comment.  I’m hoping FireShot will be the solution to this dilemma… but I haven’t tried it yet, so I don’t know.

I guess the moral of this story is that, even though I think Google Chrome is incredibly cool, until it offers the add-ons and versatility of Firefox, I should try to use the Fox more often…

Dans la série des petits logiciels bien utiles, on trouve les 2 suivants, qui vont vous permettre de faire des screenshots (copie d’écran en français).

Le premier Gadwin Printscreen fournit beaucoup de fonctionnalités appréciable, pour prendre une fenêtre, toute l’image ou un simple morceau de l’écran. Il permet de rediriger le tout vers le presse-papier, un nouveau fichier image voire directement sur l’imprimante, ce qui n’est pas négligeable.

Le second, Fireshot, est un plugin firefox, qui permet de prendre des captures d’écran des pages Web, sur la partie visible ou sur toute la page. Et en plus, il permet de faire de l’édition d’images, ce qui va vous permettre d’avoir des copies d’écran homogènes et travaillées comme de vrais professionnels de l’image.

J’attends vos propres retours d’expérience avec impatience…

Technically, FireShot’s not software. Well, it’s not stand-alone software. It’s a FireFox add-in.

As a semi-regular blogger (for as long as I can be, at least), I often find myself blogging about things in the blogosphere or on the web. It’s not unique; I think most of us do that. But when I’m blogging about things like weird search terms (which are some of the most popular posts I do) or doing software reviews, having tools at my disposal for the task makes it much easier, more enjoyable, and faster.

You may have noticed lately that some of my posts have included screen shots of portions of my WordPress dashboard. Those screen shots were taken with FireShot.

FireShot is one of those tools. For blogging, it’s amazing. Once it’s downloaded, the installer prompts you for choices. One of which is whether to include FireShot as a context-menu item. For the less geeky, that means when you right-click on your browser somewhere, FireShot is able to be among the choices you’re presented with. This is a cool feature, and one I use a great deal.

What happens is this: you have an icon on your browser’s toolbar. It’s a big red square with an “S” in it. There’s a drop-down arrow next to the icon. When you click on the icon, there’s a list of things that FireShot can do. Those items are Resume Editing (grayed out unless you’re editing a shot), Take Screen Shot (Entire Page) and …, Take a Screen Shot (Visible Area) and …, Preferences, View Demo, Write a Review, Support, Donate and About. Most of these are self-explanatory, but some of them aren’t as intuitive.

Take a Screen Shot (Entire Page) and … does just that: it takes a shot of the entire page you’re visiting. That’s great if there are multiple things you want to include in whatever you’re writing, or you want the unedited content as it is, or you’re showing the entire page for any reason. Be aware, this feature will create quite a big image file in pixels, depending on the page you’re visiting when you take the shot.

Take a Screen Shot (Visible Area) and … again does just as it indicates: it takes a shot of the portion of the page visible within your browser. The smaller your brower window, the smaller the area snapped will be. This is the one I use the most; and from there, I do more editing still.

I won’t really discuss the rest of the options. Support is where you get tech support on the product. About tells you about the version and such. View Demo — ’nuff said there. Et cetera, et cetera.

Now, once you’ve captured the screen shot, you can do a few things with it. That’s the “and …” part of the menu entries. FireShot prompts you for the next step. You can edit within the built-in editor (very cool), upload the image to your image storage location, save the image to your local drive, copy the image to the Windows clipboard, email the shot and open in an external editor. Lots of choices.

The FireShot image editor lets you drag and drop the image size (don’t expect the resolution to adjust, though; it gets pretty grainy very quickly), crop the image, and manipulate it just as you would in any simple image editor. It also allows you the opportunity to upload, save or copy the image once you’ve done the editing, so those buttons are available too. There’s a Select button that makes choosing the portion of the shot you want a snap with either an ellipse or a rectangular call-out. And there’s a nifty Shapes button that allows you to highlight certain parts of the shot for annotation. You can also do annotation outside the Shapes menu with the Pointer and Text buttons. There’s a Drawing button, too, which enables freehand drawing of lines, shapes and probably note-writing too. Very slick. While it’s not Adobe Photoshop, it’s a nice little image hacker, and it lets you stitch an image together cleanly and neatly, without having to get a graphic designer’s degree to use the program.

I’ve used it on a couple of occasions, like this one, to create images of the portions of the screen I want to use in my blog post. I capture the image, then I select the portion I’m interested in with the Selection tool of choice. That brings up a sub-menu in the sidebar to the right of the screen, and I can crop the image there. (You can do a lot of other things, too, including blur, invert, grayscale convert, annotate, add glow effects, fill … nice). Then I add the call-out shape I want and type in any text, which you can control (font and size). I can move the call-out and the pointer will automatically be adjusted. I like it a lot.

If you like blogging on web sites or portions of pages, FireShot’s a very nice little package that makes grabbing sections or portions easy and fun. It’s simple, powerful and very light-weight.

I declare, with all the great add-ons to FireFox, we won’t need to use other programs at all pretty soon.

I recommend FireShot highly to bloggers and web0philes. It’s really nifty.

Trazendo uma simples, pequena e bastante útil idéia de forma descomplicada e pequena, FireShot é mais um add-on para o navegador Mozilla Firefox que merece reconhecimento.

A função principal de FireShot é tirar screenshots de seu navegador. Mas o que faz desta extensão especial são suas ferramentas que a complementam. Assim que você captura uma tela é possível editar a imagem, adicionando anotações, apontamentos e inclusive fazendo desenhos estilo Paint.

Para quem gosta de tirar fotos inusitadas, quer dar uma sinalizada em pontos específicos de uma página ou apenas gosta de capturar telas, este é um programa bastante útil.

I recently came by several new neat tools:

del.icio.us Bookmarks (Firefox extension)

Evgeny asked me if I know of a way to synchronize his browser’s hierarchal bookmarks with his Google tagged bookmarks. I recommended him switching to del.icio.us, knowing that such a popular site must have a synchronizing extension. A little search revealed that after Yahoo purchased del.icio.us, they wrote a extension to do exactly what I looked for, and it seems to work extremely well.

One of the main benefits of the extension to me is the option to bookmark an opened Firefox tab while offline, counting on the extension to later synchronize it to del.icio.us when I’m back online.

The only problem is that I have used many, many tags, and this translates to a very long Tags menu. Obviously, the guys at Yahoo thought about it, and added the Favorite Tags feature, but still, if I look for a tag not in my favorites list, it can be annoying. I really need to clean up my list of bookmarks, but that’s not related to the del.icio.us Bookmarks. It would be better, though, if they could put the list of tabs in multiple-columns menu, like the programs menu in Windows’ Start menu, but I don’t know how easy it is to do it in a Firefox extension.

Miranda IM

When I first realized I use several IM clients, and could use one tool that will aggregate them all, I started using Meebo, especially as I was impressed with the Web and AJAX abilities they demonstrated. But then I realized I prefer a non-browser solution, which will not depend on my browser (which is an important working tool for me), and will show me tray notification on events. I picked Pidgin which looked nice.

But recently  I realized I’m having too many problems with it. It didn’t do Hebrew spell checking, it often got stuck while writing messages, it didn’t display Hebrew properly with talking with my boss via MSN, and some more. I started looking again, and found Miranda. Miranda look very nice, and it seem to have a plugin for anything I could think I need. I especially liked the SMS plugin which sends SMS via ICQ for free I so liked it, I recommended it to friends, and even installed it on my wife’s machine, so she can use it for sending SMS (thought she is still using Google Talk for chatting).

The only current problem is that Miranda doesn’t handle Hebrew spell checking well as well. I posted something about it. I hope it will sometime be fixed.

Xobni

When I saw the Xobni video I fell in love and signed up to their closed beta. I recently got an invitation to the beta and started using it. Surprisingly, It doesn’t slow down my Outlook and seems to work very well. I do have some complaints, but because it is too long, I’ll post them in separate posts.

Fireshot (Firefox extension)

I don’t use Nitobi’s products, but after reading Alex’s explanation of how he built the FishEye widget, I subscribed to his blog which sometimes have interesting ideas or links. He recently posted about the Fireshot Firefox extension for taking screenshots from the browser. There are many screen capturing programs, and my favorite is  MWSnap, but his extension allows you to easily edit the captured image – crop and blur areas, add annotations etc. I even used it to open an image captured outside of the browser with MWSnap, by opening the image in Firefox and re-capturing it, just for the editing.

The only problem I’m currently having with it doesn’t have an Undo feature, which means that if you made a mistake in your editing of the captured image, you have to re-capture and start all over again.
