Just today I received the Install Disc from your fulfillment center in Illinois, which is very speed

Just today I received the Install Disc from your fulfillment center in Illinois, which is very speedy. I felt I would be wise to protect my investment with the small additional expense of an install CD.

The updates are super fast with the Premium Suite, and the Firewall is much less “in your face” than other firewalls which is good for my wife. I am a programmer and I enjoy interacting with a verbose firewall, but most non tech folks do not.

My question is this: In the event that her old machine crashes, I presume that I am free to reinstall Avira on a replacement machine, and that my only obligation as a user is to have it installed and active on only ONE machine at a time. Am I correct in these assumptions? I assume that every time Avira downloads or scans, your servers are aware of the license and IP address and all of that, which would make sense to control the legitimate use of the license and prevent abuse.

Several other machine in my extended family are running free Avira, and I want to report that updates are very fast and reliable. I have only had to resort to a manual update perhaps twice in the past 2 months, and those are quite speedy when they are necessary.

I post what follows simply in the spirit of friendly readable chat because we do get to know each other in these forums (but I am not seeking Ubuntu support in this post)

Regarding my Ubuntu experiments, last night at midnight, I totally crashed my Ubuntu install by experimenting with two different forms of backup,, one a tar to root, and the other a Simple Backup installed via synaptic manager, which places a mysterious folder /var/backup which is unmoveable except by some form of sudo command. I think I crashed it because I did a sudo Nautilus to launch the file manager GUI with root privileges. It did work and let me delete the /backup.tar.gz, but when I rebooted, I got fatal error messages. I realize that this forum is not the place to ask for help on such matters, but I just wanted to also let reader know my latest adventure. I stayed up all night and in 7 hours did a complete Ubuntu reinstall, based upon my elaborate notes in my wordpress blog. And I took elaborate notes on the step by step REINSTALL process, which was a better install because I learned from my first mistakes and so perhaps it is a sounder system now with ext4 rather than ext3, and the installer did its own disk format and partitioning, which did not occur during the first install.

I found the instructions for Avira install under Linux too daunting, involving kernel rebuilds, which I yet lack the skills to undertake. I did find an easy Avast install with a .deb (Debian) which is what Ubuntu likes. But it did some rather strange things both in my Wubi Ubuntu under Windows and my pure Ubuntu machine. I have decided that I do not really need antivirus or firewall on the Ubuntu machine, since each exotic program and install runs the risk to trashing the system. As far as I can see from my readings, the main reason for a linux virus scan is to protect Windows users who might receive emails, but I do not forward many emails with attachments. And Ubuntu is suppose to be farily sound with regard to firewall issues by the default nature of its install. And, now that I know I can restore the system in 7 hours, I can somewhat affort to risk not doing system backups and just backing up as much data as possible, or if I am doing a lot of MySQL Apache PhP, then just building scripts as I go, which would automatically recreate databases.

I do think I will get a large (64 gig) flash drive and practice with their option for an Ubuntu bootable flash, once I have combed google for feedback on the procedure..

Thanks, Avira Forum Members, for all your great help. I am spending a lot of time now in IRC Ubuntu chat using Konversation client, and there are usually 300 people in the channel from around the world at any time, so I take every opportunity to praiise Avira and this forum.

posted at Avira Antivir Support Forum today:

I just upgraded to 3 years of Premium Avira Suite (having done a 30 day eval. with Firewall, so no need for Online Armor) and everything is smooth).

But my old Compaq machine has Free Avira and Online Armor as well as MalwareBytes (free).

I do use Paltalk on this machine, and neither Avira nor MalwareBytes has ever caught anything. But Online Armor reported some very suspicious activity from Paltalk. I allowed Online Armor to block certain things, and I still had a fine long session in Paltalk Tuesday night. But ever since, Online Armour has been doing OAminidumps. I SUBMIT them via the minidump submit. When I go to DELETE, the machine hangs for a long time and then reboots. I booted in safe (F8) mode and the defragger said I needed to do chkdsk /f and that it could not be performed at the moment but would be performed at next reboot. When I rebooted, out of curiosity, I chose the Ubuntu boot, and it did a bit of fixing and then Ubuntu came up fine and stable. But each time I boot into Windows, I get the same Online Armor minidump crash. I am in safe mode right now on that machine after the chkdsk /f successfully ran. It is allowing me to do a defrag right now. As soon as that finishes, I think I shall delete Online Armor, with the assumption that the OAdump business will go away. I do wonder about the Paltalk issues, but I really enjoy Paltalk, and I know so many people around the world who use it, so it cannot be too malicious or destructive. I shall also post this at Online Armor’s forum, but I am curious to get the feedback from people here. Thanks for your great support!

Someone suggested at Avira that it would make more sense to tell Tall Emu, the makers of Online Armor, to which I reply:

[quote='Farger',index.php?page=Thread&postID=875210#post875210]HI WilliamBuell,

I think that more reasonable will be to ask Tallemu about this :S[/quote]

Of course I am going to tell Tallemu about this, but it IS a legitimate Avira issue with regard to the question of whether Paltalk is doing something questionable, and is escaping the attention of Avira AND malwarebytes.

The two strange things that happened with regard to Online Armor and Paltalk are that Paltalk when I first launched it, tried to access my drive directly, and Online Armor said this is a very suspicious activity. The other thing, which I blocked, had something to do with some key.dll. I didnt like the looks of it, so I blocked it, but Paltalk launched fine and I was in it for an hour. But after that, all this crash business started.

I was marveling to myself how a firewall can detect suspicious activity which an AV scanner might miss. So, this in itself is a valid issue to raise on the Avira forum, NAMELY, what can be said about those suspicious activities which only a Firewall can catch? There is one antivirus someone recommended to me which supposedly detects suspicious activity and can catch a virus or malware on DAY ZERO. I am perfectly happy with Avira Premium Suite on my wife’s computer, because I want everything integrated and straight foward, and the Avira fire wall is not “in your face” every other minute with questions.

A side note of interest: I find that I am able to access Paltalk on my Ubuntu machine via Firefox. Initially, I could not get audio or mic to work, but then Firefox installed an Adobe flash update, and suddenly it was working. So, I imagine I would be safe from Paltalk monkey business on an Ubuntu machine in a Firefox browser.

Introduction

Every enterprise requires at least one firewall to provide the backbone for its network security architecture. Firewalls are the core component of your network’s security. The risks today have greatly increased, so the call for a stronger breed of firewall has been made. In the past, simple packet-filtering firewalls allowing access to your internal resources have helped to mitigate your network’s risk.The next development was stateful inspection allowing you to monitor network sessions instead of single packets.Today’s risks are far greater and require a new generation of devices to help secure our networks’ borders from the more sophisticated attacks.

Firewalls police your network traffic. A firewall is a specialized device that allows or denies traffic based upon administratively defined policies.They contain technologies to inspect your network’s traffic. This technology is not something that is exclusive to firewalls, but firewalls are designed specifically for inspecting traffic and therefore do it better then any other type of device. Any network can have millions of packets transverse it in a short period of time. It is impossible for a human to directly interact with the network. Even if you were to use a tool to look at the traffic directly it would be impossible for you to decide which traffic is good and which is bad.The need for a specialized device to enforce traffic restrictions has grown over the years. Because security is of such high importance, a specialized device was required to ensure the security of network traffic.

SonicWALL firewall appliances have answered this call for a secure enterprise. The SonicWALL firewall product line has complete offerings from the home office to the enterprise networks. In this chapter we will review networking basics. Security requires a strong basic knowledge of networking protocols. In our first section, “Understanding Networking,” we will look at networking from a top-down approach.This section starts with the basic ideas of networking models and then works into full networking communications. We will also discuss the components and prerequisites of IP addresses and how they are divided up to make networks.

We will next look at networking in general by breaking it down to a layered approach.This will help you understand the flow of networking. Each specific layer in the networking model has a purpose. Working together, these layers allow for data to seamlessly pass over the network between systems. An example of browsing a Web site will be used.You will see all of the effort it takes just to fetch a Web page. We will focus then on the TCP/IP protocol suite. This is the most commonly used networking protocol and it is the protocol of the Internet. Finally in this chapter, we will look at network security. There are many important concepts to be aware of for information security. This will help you understand some network design considerations and the background behind them….

How To Stop Spam Change Mcft to microsoft HOW TO STOP SPAM VIA WINDOWS MESSENGER SERVICE Below you

How To Stop Spam

Change Mcft to microsoft

HOW TO STOP SPAM VIA WINDOWS MESSENGER SERVICE
Below you’ll find many ways (sorted in the most successful ratio first) to stop the Windows Messenger service, depending on your system environment, some may require more than one process. This service is available only on NT, 2K, XP & Server 2003. Administrator Login is REQUIRED

About The Messenger Service
* Messenger is a Windows Service that runs in the background
* Messenger is not the same as MSN Messenger or any other Instant Messaging Program
* Messenger does not facilitate two-way chatting
* Many Windows Programs, Firewalls, UPS and Antiviruses require the Messenger Service
* Antivirus and UPS software, among others, may not work if Messenger is disabled
* The Messenger Service is usually turned on by default in most Windows NT, 2K and XP systems
1. Manually

1. Example 1

1. Click Start, Run and enter the following command:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
NOTE: This will prevent a long delay when opening Outlook Express if you have the Contacts pane enabled
2. To prevent this, click Start, Run and enter {REGEDIT} Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mcft\Outlook Express
3. Right click in the right pane and select New, Dword value
4. Give it the name Hide Messenger Double click this new entry and set the value to 2
5. End result should look EXACTLY like this:
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mcft\Outlook Express]
Value Name: Hide Messenger
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (2 = remove messenger)

2. Example 2

1. Copy and paste the following to Run Command Bar in the Start Menu:
RunDll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

3. Example 3

1. If Example 5 didn’t work, then try this – Many users miss or don’t know of it
2. Click on Start then go to RUN and type:
C:\WINDOWS\inf\sysoc.inf
3. Change:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
4. To:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7
5. Then use Add/Remove Windows Components to remove Messenger
NOTE: You can also prevent access to Windows Messenger using Group Policy or the Set Program Access and Defaults utility added by default in Windows XP SP1 and Windows 2000 SP3

4. Example 4

1. Open Windows Messenger
2. From the menu, select “Tools” then “Options” then “Preferences” tab
3. Uncheck “Run this program when Windows starts”
4. Open Outlook Express
5. From the menu, select “Tools” then “Options” then “General” tab
6. Uncheck the option to “Automatically log on”, if it’s there
7. Also in Outlook Express, select “View” then “Layout”
8. Uncheck the option to “display Contacts” – The program will open a connection and display a list of all Contacts on line if you do not
9. In “Startup Folder” make sure there is no entry there for Messenger
10. Open Norton Anti-Virus if you have it installed
11. Click “Options” then “Instant Messenger”
12. Unckeck “Windows Messenger (recommended”
NOTE: This list ought to work in disassociate MSN from Outlook Express, so that it’ll only start up if you really want it to

5. Example 5

1. 2000

* Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services
* Scroll down and highlight “Messenger”
* Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
* Click the STOP button
* Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar
* Click OK

2. XP Home

* Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
* Click Performance and Maintenance
* Click Administrative Tools
* Double click Services
* Scroll down and highlight “Messenger”
* Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
* Click the STOP button
* Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar
* Click OK

3. XP Professional

* Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
* Click Administrative Tools
* Click Services
* Double click Services
* Scroll down and highlight “Messenger”
* Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
* Click the STOP button.
* Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar
* Click OK

4. Windows NT

* Click Start ->Control Panel
* Double Click Administrative Tools
* Select Services-> Double-click on Messenger
* In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop
* Then choose Disable as the Startup Type
* Click OK
NOTE: If you stop the service and don’t adjust the startup type, the Messenger service will start automatically the next time you reboot. Keep in mind that when you disable the Messenger service, you’ll no longer receive messages about an attached UPS, and you won’t be notified of print job completion, performance alerts, or antivirus activity (from Windows) not the program you’re using for those purposes.

6. Example 6

1. To disable receipt of messenger pop-ups, verify that your firewall disables inbound traffic on UDP ports 135, 137, and 138, and TCP ports 135 and 139. On a system connected directly to the Internet, you should also disable inbound traffic on TCP port 445. If the system you want to protect is part of a Win2K-based network with Active Directory (AD), don’t block incoming traffic on port 445 – Mcft Knowledge Base Article – 330904
Code:
http://support.Mcft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330904

NOTE: You can use the firewall approach only if your system doesn’t communicate with legacy systems that rely on NetBIOS name resolution to locate machines and shared resources. If, for example, you let users running Windows 9x share your printer or scanner, when you disable inbound NetBIOS traffic, users won’t be able to connect to these shared resources. Regardless of the method you choose, you can stop messenger spam

2. Program

1. Example 1

NOTE: On Oct 15, 2003, Mcft releases Critical Security Bulletin MS03-043 warning users that the Windows Messenger Service running and exposed by default in all versions of Windows NT, 2000 and XP, contains a “Remote Code Execution” vulnerability that allows any not otherwise secured and protected Windows machine to be taken over and remotely compromised over the Internet
1. Shoot the Messenger
Code:
http://grc.com/files/shootthemessenger.exe
2. Example 2

1. Messenger Disable
Code:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/MessengerDisable.zip

NOTE: If you choose to uninstall Windows Messenger on a system with SP1 installed, you will receive an error message about “un-registering” an OCX file. This is normal, and doest not affect the removal process. Windows Messenger will still be removed

3. TEST

1. Example 1

1. Right-click “My Computer”
2. Select “Manage”
3. Under “System Tools” right-click on “Shared Folders”
4. Choose “All Tasks” and select “Send Console Message…”
5. If you recieve the following error message then the service has been disabled, otherwise confirm that you have disabled it or try another example
“The following error occured while reading the list of sessions from Windows clients:
Error 2114: The Server service is not started.”

2. Example 2

1. Click Start then “Run”
2. Type in {cmd.exe}
3. Type in net send 127.0.0.1 hi
4. If you get a popup “hi” message, then confirm that you have disabled it or try another example

4. IF YOU INSIST

1. If you insist on keeping Windows Messenger, then I’d recommend Messenger Manager – “Allows you to keep your messenger service running, as is intended and needed by Windows. This ensures that vital system errors and notifications may be sent informing you of Important System Events”
Code:
http://www.sellertools.com/default.asp?i=MessageManager3.htm

2. However, as a replacement to Windows Messenger remote control feature, I’d recommend this free tool Virtual Network Computing – “It is a remote control software which allows you to view and interact with one computer (the “server”) using a simple program (the “viewer”) on another computer anywhere on the Internet. The two computers don’t even have to be the same type, so for example you can use VNC to view an office Linux machine on your Windows PC at home”
Code:
http://www.realvnc.com/download.html

RESULTS WILL VARY
No matter how good your systems may be, they’re only as effective as what you put into them.

(http://mcfly.xtreemhost.com come over and get your colons stomped)

Most of the time, it becomes necessary for us to monitor our own computer or a remote computer to keep track of the activities going on. This may be for several reasons. Especially it is most necessary for the parents to monitor their computer to keep track of their children’s activities during their absence. Some people may also require to monitor their computer to keep an eye on the activities of their spouse or partner. Today, with the advancement in the field of the software technology, it’s just a cakewalk to monitor the computer. For this all you have to do is, use a PC Monitoring Software.

But the job doesn’t end here. This is because there exists tons of such monitoring softwares on the market and many times we get confused which to choose and how to use them. So I have decided to make this job simpler for you, by writing this post. In this post I’ll give a detailed information about Computer monitoring softwares which include their features, advantages, installation, usage procedure and so on. To make this post interesting, let’s take up each topic in the form of question and answer.

Funniest Blog in the universe: The Best Blog In The Universe.
(http://mcfly.xtreemhost.com come over and get your colons stomped)

What exactly is a Monitoring Software and how can it help me ?

A computer monitoring software is just like any other software (program) which when installed, secretly monitors each and every activity that takes place on the computer. The activities such as web browsing, chatting, gaming etc. are all recorded and saved. These monitoring softwares can record each and every keystroke. So it is possible to capture usernames and passwords very easily with minimum effort. Monitoring softwares are also commonly known as Keyloggers.

How can I install a monitoring software ?

Installing a monitoring software is too simple. During the installation, you need to setup a secret password and hotkey combination which is required later to see the recorded data ( logs). After the installation is complete the software goes invisible, but keeps running in the background. Whenever you want to see the logs, just press the hotkey combination (ex. Shift+Ctrl+F10). Now a small window will popup asking for a password. Here you need to enter the password that was setup during the installation time. After you enter the password you’ll be able to see all the activities that took place on the computer during your absence.

Funniest Blog in the universe: The Best Blog In The Universe.
(http://mcfly.xtreemhost.com come over and get your colons stomped)

Can the person using the computer come to know about the presence of the Monitoring Software ?

Most of the time it becomes impossible to detect the presence of the monitoring software. This is because, once installed it hides itself from Start menu, Program Files, Control Panel, Task manager etc. Because of it’s stealth behaviour the user can never come to know that he/she is under the presence of monitoring.

Funniest Blog in the universe: The Best Blog In The Universe.
(http://mcfly.xtreemhost.com come over and get your colons stomped)

Which Monitoring Software should I use ?

There exists different flavours of these softwares and you have to choose the one that best match your needs. Here is a list of some of the best monitoring programs that I recommend.

For Monitoring a Local PC:

If you want to monitor a local PC (may be your own PC) then the following program is recommended.

Spy Agent Stealth

For Monitoring a Remote PC (Also works on local PC) :

If you want to monitor a remote PC you may use the following programs. These programs works for remote PC as well as local PC.

Win-Spy Monitor

Realtime Spy

Keystroke Spy

For Monitoring a Network :

The following program can be used to monitor an Entire Network of computers from one central location. This becomes handy to monitor the staff in a company or students in a school/college.

NetVizor

Funniest Blog in the universe: The Best Blog In The Universe.

On Linux, create a separate chain for the data that is to be monitored. Chuck the rules in, then periodically do this:

iptables-save -c | grep “\-A mychain” >> ipacct.log.

But one would have to zero out those counters right after that save:

iptables -L mychain -Z > /dev/null

OR install something like ntop.

Or SNMP and MRTG, although I like the flexibility of using iptables.

With ipfw, this is also possible, but Mac OS X is crazy with most of my firewall rules (the ones set up with the Preferences) hidden from ipfw list!

A great question from an associate: What program do you use for managing your email account? I like

A great question from an associate:

What program do you use for managing your email account? I like that you can have your picture on it.

Here’s my answer:

I just started using Outlook (not to be confused with Outlook Express, which is a truncated version of Outlook handling email only).

Outlook combines email, calendaring and contacts all in one application. It’s really slick. Being able to embed a photo or logo in outgoing emails is only the start of its really cool features. It’s also pretty easy to get started on.

On the downside, the most cool features require a bit of a learning curve to implement; however, once you get them set up, you never have to think about them again….unless your system crashes and you have to do a complete system reinstall.

That said, a major downside to Outlook is that it is HIGHLY susceptible to viruses – more so than about any other software on the market. So if you decide to use it, make sure you have a system in place for protecting your computer from viruses and backups.

I can’t stress backups highly enough. I once paid $2000 to get my data back after a system crash. I would have paid $10K. To avoid any expense, I could have paid $100 and done weekly backups.

I can’t recommend to anyone, anywhere, for any reason, at any time using virus protection software (McAffee or Norton) – but instead using hardware in the form of an external firewall, hardware offered by Internet service providers like Comcast or McLeod. (Qwest DSL is terrible, can’t recommend that either.)

The reasons I recommend against software virus protection are:

Virus protection software companies have an incentive to put viruses ON people’s computers; doing this keeps them in business. Some have actually been caught doing this.

Virus protection software interferes with the use of other software, particularly email and browsers.

Virus protection software requires an enormous amount of RAM (Random Access Memory). RAM is what determines how fast your computer is able to think. The amount of RAM that comes standard in most of today’s computers is a healthy amount – but the anti virus software requires ALL of it to run properly. This means that there is no RAM left for your computer to run other software (like the operating system and Office); therefore, your computer will appear to function VERY SLOWLY – taking forever to do very simple things….like open a Word file.

Virus protection software has been the #1 cause of support calls I have received in my 15-year career. It is likely the bane of most internal PC support technician’s careers — and a pretty good source of income for most external (contracting/consulting) PC support technicians.

So my recommendation is to get high speed cable with an external firewall (hardware). Fewer hassles. Much lower cost short and long term.

I’ve only had 2 viruses in the last 5 years — which was my own fault on both counts; I clicked on a nasty link while doing research. I also have a good backup system (external hard drive) and system recovery process (VMware) in place – so restoration only takes me 20 minutes as opposed to 2-3 days.

This all makes Outlook a good solution for me.

Villains, like sharks, have a eye for weak points in any form and just like sharks, they can find and exploit the Achilles heel. The major producers of software for the Web Microsoft, Apple and Opera regularly find new defects in their code and often issue updates to their software. In most cases, you can and should set your software to automatically patch your software. It’s one more way of closing potential entry points which the criminals can use to get into your system and cause havoc. Even when you install a new Browser or a brand new computer system, remember to check that you are using the newest issue of software. Take a look

MindSource specializes in placing technology professionals with companies in the Silicon Valley Regi

MindSource specializes in placing technology professionals with companies in the Silicon Valley Region and beyond. We have a need for a Network Administrator to work with our client in Mt. View, CA. This is a CONTRACT position, so let me know your interest ASAP!

Our client is seeking an energetic and experienced Network Engineer with Juniper router experience. If you have just done Cisco, you will not be a fit. Also, hands-on experience with Citrix netscalers and Netscreen VPN/firewalls is important.

You would join a heterogeneous team of 6 system and network engineers who support the production and development environments. Specifically, the team is tasked with taking project handoffs from engineering and implementing as well as providing ongoing support for said “services”. In addition to implementation, the team is tasked with carrying out smaller scale changes (setting up ACL’s, load balancing, VPN, caching, switching, routing, etc). Most client interaction is internal, though we do get involved with external clients for some configuration work as well as outage support. This team is on call 24/7 to provide tier 2/3 level support as necessary.

The ideal candidate would have a broad background in both network (primary) as well as system level troubleshooting. A generalist with solid troubleshooting skills is probably the best way to describe it.

Specific skills:

System level network debugging (Solaris, Linux and a little bit of Windows)

packet switching, packet routing

in-depth knowledge of routers, switches, load balancing, VPN.

familiar with JunOS, Citrix netscaler, Netscreen, Blue Coat, SBC’s, Cisco switches

knowledge of shell scripting (regex)

experience in HA multi-site networks

data circuit troubleshooting (T1’s to OC3’s)

familiarity with VOIP is helpful

console/command line network config (we don’t use gui’s to configure network
equipment)

RCS (revision control system) and ACL*s

perform and read/debug packet captures

5 plus years experience

change management familiarity

conceptual knowledge of 7-layer OSI model

If you are interested in this position, please forward your resume to kathy@mindsource.com TODAY!

On September 6th, 2009, Spamhaus blocked a /16 which is 65,536 IPs (1 Class B) on its SBL. This list

On September 6th, 2009, Spamhaus blocked a /16 which is 65,536 IPs (1 Class B) on its SBL. This listing is filed under SBL68517. The IP range that is being blocked is 132.240.0.0/16. One can view the ASN information of 132.240.0.0 at robtex. According to robtex, the upstream for this range is AS3257 which is Tinet (formerly Tiscali). There are 3 current SBLs related to this large blocking: SBL68517, SBL78348 ( 207.86.112.0/21 of XO.com ) and SBL78350 ( 38.97.224.0/24 of Cogentco).

If one is rusty on subnetting (how many IPs after a / listing), one can check the CIDR entry on the wiki. Having over 65,000 IPs blocked by Spamhaus is generally a big deal to ISPs and webhosts. Spamhaus in its diligent research of the worst spam ogranisations has determined that this IP range which is owned by Oracle (AS794) is hijacked. Spamhaus classifies such activitiy under ROKSO as Zombies. Nearly all Spamhaus’ ROKSO (Register of Known Spam Operations) entries are names of companies, people or something similar which are known to engage in large scale spamming activities. Spamhaus lists such groups on its ROKSO lists if the spamming operations have been terminated with at least 3 different ISPs. Zombies (the activity of hijacking networks of IP ranges) gets its own entry.

The problem of zombies (hijacked netblocks) appears to be an issue in fighting spam and blocking various rogue networks. Spamhaus updates a list of DROP (Don’t Route or Peer) networks (hijacked netblocks or zombies) on its website for network administrators to use to block unwanted traffic to their networks, firewalls or webservers.

It would seem that the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs which are LACNIC, ARIN, RIPE, AfriNIC, and APNIC ) would be more protactive in preventing hijacking from happening in the first place. The RIRs allocate the IPs to different organizations, mainly to ISPs and large corporations. Perhaps IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) which is oversees the allocations of IP addresses should take some action as well in minimizing the stealing of netblocks on the Internet by spammers. But then again, one who watches the issue of fraudulent domain name purchases knows that ICANN is not taking direct action that often in minimizing falsified domains purchased by spammers often using stolen credit cards. These fraudulent domains are then used in many spamming activities including fast flux DNS on botnets.

So, in our environment, we have several segregated networks. Each has their own (squid) proxy server

So, in our environment, we have several segregated networks. Each has their own (squid) proxy server and none have previously had issues with automatic updates. All were supposedly set the same way, with the proxy being pushed through group policy. The gpo was set to only push the proxy to normal users and not members of the IT team, mainly because we just don’t like having it. Anyway, there is one network that could not get the microsoft update web page to load. When we looked at the proxy, it looked as though it was redirecting the page to a null site. The reason it was only affecting the one network was: The other networks have the ability to bypass the proxy if the page didn’t load and it wasn’t listed as blocked, whereas this particular network was forced to have all traffice through the proxy. The key to making it work was one simple command:

proxycfg -p :

Anyway, i know this is a simple little post, but hope it helps someone.

UPDATE (9/17):

For Vista/Server 2008 use this command:

netsh winhttp set proxy [myproxy]:[myport]

deswegen “watch your steps” wie in Freddys’ Nightmare,

Last-minute-one-way,
