tuplaydin prosessori, teholtaan kelvollinen

keskusmuistia vähintään 4 Gt

Wlan

Firewire portti (IEEE 1394)

Raport calitate –pret foarte bun.

A DV Cable or IEEE 1394 FireWire is a different name for iLink which is just a brand name used by So

A DV Cable or IEEE 1394 FireWire is a different name for iLink which is just a brand name used by Sony. What is it for? It’s used to connect your camcorder to other devices to rapidly transfer digital data.

Apple developed FireWire which, under the name IEEE 1394, was then taken up by the electronics industry to become the standard device for transfer. Just for identification purposes, iLink is the name recognized by Sony to their variation of the same cable.

It was in 1995 that FireWire became the industry standard since then it has been developed to achieve really fast speeds, usually up to 800 Mbps. Of course further development is under way and it’s muted that the velocity will reach over 3GPS, which is actually quite staggering.

The actual DV Cable is likely to be equipped with a 4 pin plug at one end, for plugging in to your camcorder, and a 6 pin plug at the other end to connect to your computer. Most modern computers are constructed with this facility and of course all camcorders have the required socket.

What does all this mean?

Quite a lot really. Many of us today have a camcorder and filming particular occasions and events, or recording the development of our kids say, well, this can be something really unique. The use of a FireWire cable not only makes it possible for us to then view the recordings on our desktop or laptop computer, it simplifies the entire procedure. And It’s quick!

Maybe you’d like to share the delights of your family or special event with the rest of the globe, now you can, merely by uploading a version of the video, now stored on your computer, and sending it to YouTube for instance.

And of course, if you have a commercial website then the advantages of being able to do all this assumes great significance. Whilst the written word cannot be substituted, promoting your merchandise or service through the medium of video is very definitely the way to go.

Such is the speed and convenience of FireWire transfer that you could very quickly develop and broadcast large amounts of videos on an ongoing basis. Such activity should result in a desirable outcome, backlinks, visitors and sales.

The point is you can do all this even if you’re not tech savvy. So, for layman and geek alike, the early and continuing development of this technology has proved to be vastly important. It has very definitely enhanced the pleasure and enjoyment element no end, irrespective of your skills level behind the camera.

What’s next?

Computers have become so innovative that we have to question whats next. For now, the easiest way to put video on your computer is by using a DV cable. Maybe in the future it will be done wireless. We could look forward to FireWire 3.0 or maybe there will not be any need for a cable at all. We would just press a button and instantly our video would appear on a computer. Wouldn’t that be great? We hope it remains to be easy to understand and use!

The 6′ 4 pin to 6 pin Belkin IEEE 1394/Firewire cable does exactly what it says it should for

The 6′ 4 pin to 6 pin Belkin IEEE 1394/Firewire cable does exactly what it says it should for relatively cheap. As long as you’re at the 400 MB/s standard as this is, there’s no need to spend $50 on a gold plated connector and superheavy isolation like the Monster cables. Firewire is designed to function up to 15′ without signal degradation, and unlike analog signals the 0 and 1s of digital signals aren’t subject to manipulation by electrical fields. Either they get through or they don’t, so as long as these are certified under the standard you save money by not buying useless frills. It’s shiny translucent silver, not black, but if you care that much about cable color you probably already have your cables hidden anyway.

The 4 pin models work with most electrical powered devices; the 6 pin models usually are for devices that need battery power. (The extra two pins carry current.) For those looking for an adapter for Comcast/Motorola HDTV-ready digital boxes, this is the cable you need. For some reason Motorola decided to use a 6 pin adapter, where almost all HDTVs and DVHS VCRs use a 4 pin. (PCs typically use 6.) I’ve used one for a while now to run flawless 1080i signals between my Comcast HDTV box and my DVHS VCR. Recommended.

This Belkin 6′ IEEE 1394 cable is a very solid cable, with a male 4-pin (“i.Link”) connector on one end and a male 6-pin (“Firewire”) connector on the other. It supports the full speed (400Mbps) of the IEEE 1394 specification, and looks durable.

You should beware of the no free shipping policy on this cable when sold by Amazon — it does not count toward the $25 free shipping promotion. I used 1-click to order this and was charged close to six bucks for shipping. Ouch. Still, the total was much less than the cheapest price elsewhere, on the web or in stores.

The new unibody polycarbonate enclosure MacBook Apple came out October 20 is absolutely outstanding and it becomes more like the unibody MacBook Pros. Yet, it is still, however, an amazing $999 price tag. Despite its great design and new features, has anyone notice that some ports are missing, that its previous generation has that the new generation doesn’t? There is no audio out anymore, but however the audio port in the new MacBook becomes audio in/out. What’s more important, the FireWire Port is missing. There is no sign of the FireWire 400 or 800 port. So some who uses hard drives that only use FireWire 400/800 connection, you are now unable to use it. You’ll have to stick to the slower side of the external/portable hard drive category. This may be a farewell to the FireWire – forever – well, at least for the MacBook line.

In 2007 I purchased a White 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook. I paid £650.

In 2009, Apple released the White 2.26Ghz Unibody Macbook. Apple are asking £799 for it. It DOESN’T come with Firewire of any kind, a battery indicator or an SD slot. Admittedly it comes with a better screen, a beefier graphics card and multitouch trackpad, nice to have but nothing mind blowing or anything that could extend the life of the machine.

I could rant about how great Firewire and how stupid Apple is for leaving it out, all I need to say is that I have 2 Firewire hard drives daisy chained attached to this machine, one of them a Time Machine Backup, 820GB’s in total running off the 1 cable. I can’t take any of this with me if I moved to the new MacBook.

There is an argument that for only £100 more you can get the Aluminium 13″ MacBook Pro, which comes with everything I’m griping about that the plastic unibody doesn’t. This is the up sell technique in action. But I would argue that if there is only £100 in the difference, why even bother making the plastic version? Why not just sell MacBook Pro’s and the MacBook Air, why even bother wasting people’s time when its so obvious in what they want to move the customer to?

Sure there will be some people who will buy it, but its such a boring machine I don’t think it does Apple any favours. There are Netbooks with more connectivity which are more than half the price and there are other Windows machines priced at £799 that are capable of doing so much more as well. Not only isn’t it competitive with windows machines but there is also the Mac Mini.

The Mac Mini is a £499 machine with a supposed ‘Pro’ feature such as Firewire 800 (1), why even bother adding Firewire to a £499 machine but not to a £799 laptop? The Mac Mini does have 5 USB ports as it is. Why does a lower priced machine have it, where is the up sell technique in Apple’s desktop lineup? Are 2 USB ports even enough for the Macbook, they are if you purchase enough wireless gear I guess.

Let’s not forget the total fail that is the SD card slot, its pretty much standard on any laptop in the consumer market, bar the actual laptop that Apple sells to consumers.

For people with the older MacBooks, the difference isn’t going to be £100 either, it will be the difference between what we paid for our current MacBooks, so the difference is actually £250. Is it worth it now?

Being a Pro feature means that its use is reserved only for the Pro Machines. An artificial distinction Apple has made with its machine to justify product differentiation. I would argue there are better ways but hey ho.

I recently predicted that FireWire would eventually be replaced by Light Peak on all Macs, and that FireWire was only back on the MacBook temporarily. Little did I know then that only a couple of days later Apple would announce the new MacBook and kill off FireWire so quickly (on the MacBook at least).

It’s a shame, I shall miss it. The fast peripheral bus is dead, long live the fast(er) peripheral bus!

Apple Inc. beat Wall Street expectations earlier this week when they announced their Q4′09 earnings. Considered to be the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, Apple Inc. simply asks “What recession?” Today, Apple Inc. continued their spectacular October when they announced several new products across their computer line.

Mac Mini Server

The Mac Mini was one of the computer models that got an upgrade. The $599 model got a spec bump with a faster processor (now 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, up from 2GHz), twice the memory (now 2GB, up from 1GB), and a larger hard drive (now 160GB, up from 120GB). The $799 has the 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM (up from 2GB) but the same 320GB hard drive. Both price points still have the GeForce 9400M GPU and 8x SuperDrive. In addition to the upgrades to the Mac Mini line, there is now a “Server Edition” of the Mac Mini that forgoes the 8x SuperDrive and instead packs in TWO 500GB hard drives. This $999 model packs a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB of RAM, and GeForce 9400M GPU. Snow Leopard Server is included of course.

Next, Apple updated the iMac line with two screen size choices (21.5 inches or 27 inches) that are 16:9 displays and are all-aluminum bodies. Both have IPS panels that are LED-backlit and have a 178-degree viewing angle. Also both models come with wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse at no additional cost. Starting at $1199, the 21.5 inch has a 1920×1080 resolution and starts with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (upgradable to 3.33GHz), 4GB RAM standard (upgradable to 8GB), 500GB hard drive (1 & 2TB options available at $1499 price point), andGeForce 9400M GPU (ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB GPU option available at $1499 price point). At $1699, the 27 inch has a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and starts with a 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (upgradable to 3.33GHz), 4GB RAM (upgradable to 16GB), 1TB hard drive (upgradable to 2TB), and ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB GPU (upgradable to ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GPU). Finally, at $1999 the 27 inch comes with the 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 (upgradable to 2.8GHz Core i7), 4GB RAM (upgradable to 16GB), 1TB hard drive (upgradable to 2TB), and ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GPU. All models have 4 USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet port, one FireWire 800 port, and SD card slot (finally), and 8x SuperDrive. The 27 inch has a video-in.

Unibody Macbook

The low-end Macbook gets a makeover with a new white unibody polycarbonate design (similar to Macbook Pros), built-in 7 hour battery, LED-backlit display, Glass Multi-Touch trackpad, 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM (upgradable to 4GB), 250GB hard drive (upgradable to 500GB), and GeForce 9400M GPU starting at $999.

Perhaps the most intriguing announcement today is the new Magic Mouse (no longer “Mighty”) for $69. It is the first multitouch wireless mouse on the market meaning you use your fingers to scroll, swipe, and click. The Magic Mouse is supposed to last 4 months on AA batteries.

Apple also revamped their remote with a new aluminum finish that is kinda like the bastard child of the iPod Nano and the old iPod Shuffle. It can control your iPod, iPhone, and/or Mac for $19.

Lastly, Apple updated the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule for better performance.

Magic Mouse

Firewire makes a (temporary) comeback?

Last year I speculated about the future of Firewire on the MacBook and came to the conclusion that the most logical path for Apple would be to build firewire into the Ethernet port via the new Firewire specification IEEE1394c.

Apple may have taken this in a new direction entirely (which frankly we should all expect from Apple by now!), if reports of Light Peak, the new peripheral bus from Intel are to be believed. More on that later.

Firewire has now been reinstated to the MacBook line, albeit in a roundabout way. Firewire 400 is still available on the white plastic MacBook which was the only surviving member of the old MacBook generation that wasn’t transitioned to the new Unibody enclosure borrowed from the MacBook Pro. Those MacBooks paid the price for their svelte looks and lost their FireWire ports in the process. Apple has now reinstated Firewire in the form of Firewire 800 to these and rebranded them as the new 13″ MacBook Pros.

So here’s the situation. Once more every Mac has Firewire (apart from the freak of the family, the MacBook Air). Although I haven’t had personal experience with the new models, presumably once more every Mac has Firewire Target Disk mode (once again excepting the freak).

So is Firewire back for good? I don’t think so. I think Apple was frankly surprised at the backlash to losing Firewire (especially after it was dropped from iPods with only a little angst) on the MacBook, and that was part of the reason to it’s comeback. But I believe it will only be a temporary measure, until Light Peak replaces it. When I first heard about Light Peak I was amazed that we didn’t have a peripheral bus based on fibre optics already, and that no-one seemed to have thought of it before. I firmly believe that the future will be in wireless peripheral communication, but wires aren’t going away any time soon. If we have to have wires, why not have one small, high capacity connection that can carry all types of communication now that fibre optic has matured to make cables flexible and durable enough for this purpose?

My only concern is that Light Peak will be developed as a master/slave architecture that will make technology like Target Disk mode and daisy chaining (that makes Firewire great) impossible to implement. Its multi-device, multi-protocol design would most probably make that unlikely though.

Unfortunately, I assumed too much when I said VID3 & VID4 could use the USB connection they offer to transfer all video to a non-firewire computer. You can only use the USB cable if you are transferring from the memory card, not from a DV Tape.

This means that students who don’t have access to a firewire-enabled computer must

1. use a memory card to record or
2. borrow one of our Macbooks and a firewire cable or
3. borrow a firewire cable and use one of the macs in the library to transfer their footage.
