First Time Ever: Peggy Seeger’s shamen-like vocal takes a classic to another place

Folksploitation: Seeger’s voice rises triumphant above the vocoder treatment

The Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield. Morrissey and Sandie Shaw. The Bee Gees and Dionne Warwick. Jack White and Loretta Lynn. The KLF and Tammy Wynette. There’s a great tradition in pop music of collaboration between iconic female singers and contemporary singer/songwriter producers that brings their work and back stories to the attention of a new generation.

Note that I don’t use the word ‘rescue’, although in the case of Dusty Springfield, the timely approach of the Pet Shop Boys with “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” led directly to a welcome late career revival. I hesitate, too, to use the much-abused word ‘Diva’, although these women had earned such a status in the historical arc of pop long before any second flourishing opened up new territory for them.

I would certainly hesitate to call Peggy Seeger a ‘Diva’, although if anything, she merits the title in her sphere even more than any of the women mentioned above.  She is a touchstone for folk singers and songwriters of any age. While she herself has dipped in and out of the music business, always having plenty of other fish to fry as an activist and archivist, her songs, her musicianship and that timeless, multi-textured voice have made her a constant influence on her peers and subsequent generations.

Her long partnership – personal and artistic – with Ewan MacColl, which began when she came to the UK in the 1950s, and their prodigious body of work embracing traditional folk songs and new material, made her in many eyes the founding mother of the modern folk revival.

And it would be patently ridiculous to call her extraordinary new collaboration with experimental dance music pioneer Broadcaster a ‘rescue’. New York-born Seeger has long since returned to live in the UK after several years back in her homeland, and at the age of 77 is still singing and touring (albeit avoiding long flights these days) with great zest and verve. But Folksploitation has already ignited a whole new wave of interest in the woman whose voice cuts like the chant of a shamen across Broadcaster’s edgy techno beats with all the wisdom of the ages. It’s an utterly absorbing and frequently exhilarating experience.

Seeger embraces the world of dubs and samples as if to the manner born. And it’s hard to resist the woman for whom Ewan MacColl wrote “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” when she consents to such a radical reworking. Here, as “First Time Ever”, its arrival is signalled by a Numanesque burst of electronica, before fragments of one of the great modern standards build into a remarkable collage that rescues it from the desert of a thousand hotel lobbies and sends it on a completely different trajectory.

The album goes way beyond mere sampling. The compelling beat that underpins the bleak “Little White Grains” is a fascinating juxtaposition, hooking you in even as you’re floored by the grimness of the lyrics. And in the midst of all these new sounds, you never forget that Seeger’s work has always been lyric- (and specifically, story-) centred. As those lyrics often concern timeless themes – drug addiction, violence, abusive relationships – they have a contemporary resonance that’s a perfect match for this hustling, urban treatment.  The narrative lines of “Bad, Bad Girl” and “Welcome to the Neighbourhood” are driven by Broadcaster’s insistent riffs, with Seeger’s voice given the full vocoder treatment, from which it emerges astringent and triumphant.

Despite the essential darkness of much of the material, Folksploitation is a thrilling, hypnotic experiment which Seeger’s die-hard fans will probably approach with trepidation. But ultimately, it’s a surprising triumph for this redoubtable singer’s capacity to push the boundaries and make her listeners think again. So yes, let’s add Broadcaster and Peggy Seeger to that list.

When he answered, it was as if I quickly came back to reality. Truth is, I thought the call would go to voicemail.

“Hi!” said he very happy, “so glad we are talking.”

“Me too! Wow! Can’t believe this is actually happening.” Now I was really nervous.

“Why do you say that?”

“Because the whole commercial thing was so long ago, and I was in college, and you had your career going. I’m sure because of it you have met tons of people, so it could have gone either way about you remembering me.”

“Of course I remember you! Why wouldn’t I? You were a great person. Besides, I was always accessible to people, including you.”

I almost started crying. It was incredible how all people past and present that have been or are part of my life, agree on what he just said. All except one.

“I remember this from you,” said I. “I always felt that you were genuine, which is actually what I thought about you when I saw you on TV during the casting period.”

There was a brief pause from him. It seemed what I said also touched him.

The conversation covered many topics and took a different turn when it got to one aspect in particular.

“I left home because the entertainment industry has taken a deep downslide. There’s a lot of talent, but not enough outlets for all of them to channel,” said he. “I remember when there was this great time in TV that I was doing so much work. Now you have to leave and search for new opportunities. There is no other choice.

Look at me, at my age, starting over both professionally and personally.”

When he said ‘starting over’, something remarkable happened. For the first time ever, I finally connected with him, meaning, I saw him as the person he really is. In other words, I got him because I am on the same spot as he is.

“Of all the people I’ve known,” said I, “you are one of those that I never thought would be where you are now. I always envisioned something totally different for you.”

The conversation continued longer than I had expected. In between all said I learned that his girlfriend lives back home (that explains a lot) and that he is very faithful to her.

Having said that, should I suggest meeting up? Maybe I should leave that to him.

The conversation came to an end when he got another call he needed to answer. (‘Saved by the bell!’)

We quickly agreed to speak again. And just like that, the conversation was over.

So, what happens next?

Screw that. HUNDREDS of people have reviewed MINECRAFT, and hundreds more will do, and because of my lateness coming into the game which started being played at 2009, two years later I have the HONOUR to say that… OMG IS THAT A COW?!!

As it seems, yes it is, but it is HELL weird...

And with my brother, best friend #1 and #2 playing it, andmyself watching Kids React, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back!

But suddenly, when I entered to my brother-installed-Minecraft-beta-1.8.1-which-who-he-doesn’t-let-me-use, creating of my account, when I created my new world (“Wonda !:3″) and when I was born with my new 8 bit body in the top of a not-really-high mount FULL OF COWS, they escaped faster than I could, as they heard me through the monitor shouting.

The next thing I noticed, was the CUBE SUN, as I called it, and that, what is seems to be Wonda, is just islands which what it looks right nwo,  it was a land which was later summerged by sea?

And what are those houses right there? Cow-town houses? Not going there. HELL no.

And obviously I think Im also not the only one who got desperate after couldn’t move the center croce and couln’t see the mouse! OMG where was it? It took me about four minutes to type “ESC” and enter to another program to control paste one of the images you can see above here.

Im not gonna tell you the INSTRUCTIONS to play it, there has been two years to learn that and make at least 200.000 guides to that, what I AM gonna tell is about my opinions, but, uhm, first… can you kill that?!

I got drown before I could see it entirely.

What it was worse was that it took me about 15 minutes to found out that if you click with the croce a block, it will destroy after some time, and will eventually give you A SOMETHING

Why did all just suddenly came up to twilight?!

And TIME! OMG, Its so quick, you cant even get in another island before getting twilight, or night.

And please tell me what are those little bastards who came up suddenly and freaked me out and killed me!?!?!?

At 7 we are allowed to start getting ready I have dyed my hair black. It looks really cool! I am DYING to get off with Stephen. This is my true love of the year (sarky). I’ve just been reading my I heart Jeremy diary. I hope Caz doesn’t get off with Stephen – I’ll fucking kill her!! Weill I get off with him… all will be revealed in the next lines!!!

2.30 I went out with such high hopes and now they’ve all been shattered. As soos as Stephen arrived he got off with Caz ALREADY Well, I was very pissed off so I was crying – first time ever over a boy – why are they such bastards. Then I lost my contact lens well ONE of them – but it means I’ll be wearing glasses for a few days  – un-bloody-fortunately. I spoke to Stephen he was very offish, this was after SHE had gone. He’s borrowing my bracelet but the sod tomorrow sorry I’m a bit drunk at the moment, as you may have guessed dear diary, I spent the majority of the evening crying over lost lenses and lost loves. I still fucking like him which is what is so annoying – he  was just lying on the floor  – stupid sod. I hate having to write this it’s just upsetting me. So I got off with 3 boys – I don’t know who for the life of me and it didn’t help at all. And I’ve lost my keys. Never again.

For lunch we decided on the Fusion Taco Truck – Yummy, excellent choice.  Once we got our food we decided to cop a squat, eat and take in the surroundings.  After we ate we were on a mission to explore the market. 

They had everything, you name it: Indian food, bread, vegetables, pies, tamales, cookies and the list goes on and on.  Then, off the corner of my eye a tray of neatly and colorful rows of something caught my eye.  I approached the table and there they were – macaroons.  They were so pretty, magical, and delicate looking.  I have seen them around all over the place and as a pastry chef in the making I told myself that I was to try every dessert out there no matter what.  You see I need and want to know about every single little thing the pastry world has to offer.

Oh my, they were exquisite – packed with tons of flavor and very light in texture.  I fell in love!  I will attempt to bake these in the near future.  I did some research and from the looks of it macaroons are an art to bake but I am up for the challenge!

Anyway, the idea was to outrun the nipping, barking devils. But just because I had done it once before, did not mean I’d manage to do it again today. With this comforting thought in mind, I threw the car into the melee. Or rather, manufactured the melee by throwing myself into it.

A brown blur of activity, the pack parted, each dog taking up the chase position assigned by their obnoxious leader. Their gnashing teeth were truly ominous and I thanked my lucky stars that the windows were up.

At that instant, something got into me. I stopped. Thrown off, the dogs halted too, no doubt preparing to sink their teeth into their well-earned pound of flesh. I rolled down my window and their leader stepped up, triumphant at last. I dared not look him in the eye, so fixed my gaze somewhere below his throat.

“Hi dude,” I addressed him, “what’s with all this fussing?”

Forgetting – for a moment – to bark, he glowered at me. I sensed his hesitation. This encounter was just as unexpected for him as it was for me. The others, meanwhile, crowded around their leader, cautiously watching to see what would come next.

Emboldened, I continued, “You want to bite me? Here!” and I extended my arm to him. This was make-or-break. I held my breath as he sniffed me. When a whole minute had passed, I touched him for the first time ever. Tentatively, I reached behind his ear and gave him a quick rub. He did not seem to resist but only turned away, toward his fellows.

Shocked and amazed, the others backed off as I withdrew my hand, rolled up the window and restarted the car.

Driving on at a leisurely pace, I glanced in the rearview mirror. Must say I like sheepish dogs. Don’t you?

That’s a difficult choice to make when there are so many variables – a song or tune might be best at one time or place but beaten by another at another.

However, since we’ve had the top 10 quintessential Kiwi songs and the top 10 Beatles songs, I thought it was time for the top 10 songs from anywhere by anyone, and why:

1. The 23rd Psalm.

I remember it from Sunday school, High School. I also associate it with the big events in my life: our wedding (because me farmer like the rural connotations, at which the minister suggested we could sing We Plough the Fields and Scatter . . . ); the funerals of my mother in law, father, and both our sons and at my mother’s we sang The King of Love  which is based on the 23rd Psalm.

2. Pokarekare Ana. 

We may not know all the words, but it’s the song by which Kiwis recognise each other all over the world.

3. Pachelbel’s Canon.

I don’t remember when I first heard it but it’s been played at lots of celebrations I’ve attended. The last of these was the wedding of our nephew in Argentina when his mother, sister and cousin played it on violins as the bride entered the church.

4. Killing Me Softly.

We were skiing on Coronet Peak and had paused where the chairlift passed close to the trail. A skier reached out and waved his mitten close to my friend’s face. She immediately started singing Strumming my face with his fingers. . . ”

5. Handel’s Largo from Xerxes.

Another tune associated with celebrations, although it was several years after I first heard it that I learned it came with words.

6. The Skye Boat Song.

Partly because of my Scottish genes and partly because it was on the CD the surgeon chose when our first son was delivered.

7. Danny Boy

Our son was Dan and we sang this at his funeral. But I first came across the tune when I was in a Bible Class choir and we sang The Day Thou Gavest Lord is Ended  to it.

8. Jeremiah Clarke’s Trumpet Voluntary.

Another one associated with celebrations and we chose it for the recessional at our wedding.

9. The Great Pretender.

Any list of songs has to have a soppy one.

10. Hine E Hine

With or without the Good Night Kiwi.

11. Rock Around The Clock

A list has to have a good dance tune too.

The third is a little Turtle at the Dock, he is sitting by the Dock, click the turtle and he will walk up onto the rock and you can add it to your discoveries!

Your firth discovery is at the Snow Forts, Click the bush on the left of the PST Clock!

Head to the Iceberg and wait a few seconds, you will see a whale shoot water through its blow hole, Click it, he will swim towards the Iceberg and you can click him again to add him to your discoveries! 

The fifth is above the dirty dishes at the Plaza (not sure why those are there) hanging over the Pizza Parlor.

This one can be a little tricky, but not with my help! Head to the Beach and wait to see the bubbles in the water over to the bottom right. Click on them to bring up a jellyfish, your 7th discovery!

The changes were unveiled by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook has responded to criticism over the way it handles user data by handing over control to its users.

Members of the social network will have comment and voting rights over the firm’s future policies regarding how the site is governed.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg said the aim was to “open up Facebook so that users can participate meaningfully in our policies and our future”.

Privacy International’s Simon Davies said the move was “unprecedented”.

“No other company has made such a bold move towards transparency and democratisation,” he said.

“The devil will be in the detail but, overall, we applaud these positive steps and think they foreshadow the future of web 2.0.”

Mr Zuckerberg admitted that the recent changes to the website’s terms and conditions had sparked a “firestorm”.

Users had complained that it appeared Facebook was claiming ownership of their data – even if they delete their accounts.

The founder said: “We do not own user data, they [users] own it. We never intended to give that impression and feel really bad that we did.”

Facebook has announced a new set of governing principles and rights and responsibilities.

The Facebook charter states: Users own their data and can remove it when they want Facebook should publicly make available information about its purpose, plans, policies, and operations Facebook should have a town hall process of notice and comment and a system of voting to encourage input and discourse on amendments to these Principles or to the Rights and Responsibilities

Under the changes, users will be able to first comment and then potentially vote on future changes to the documents.

Facebook will enact a vote on changes to its governance when more than 7,000 comments have been made by users on a topic.

Mr Zuckerberg told BBC News: “We think that is pretty reasonable.

“We have designed the votes so a small minority of users cannot create a binding election.”

Facebook is the largest social network in the world, with more than 175 million users. The controversy over Facebook’s use of personal data is not the first time it has had a run in with users.

It angered some members in the past when it introduced a new advertising system, called Beacon, which delivered adverts to users on external websites based on their Facebook profile and habits. Beacon was quickly changed in order to give users an opt-in or opt-out button from the service.

Included in the new Facebook principles are specific details regarding the ownership of data.

It states: “People should own their information. They should have the freedom to share it with anyone they want and take it with them anywhere they want, including removing it from the Facebook Service.”

Mark Zuckerberg said that Facebook had undertaken to carry out all of its business within the framework of the new governance documents.

“We trust our users. We are making this so that we can’t put in place a new terms of service without users’ permission.”

He said he hoped the new policy would “strengthen the community and the bonds between us and the users”.

He told BBC News that he believed that opening up decisions about the future policies of the social network was not incompatible with doing business.

He said: “The important thing to keep in mind is that we are strengthening the trust people have in us.

“We believe that good dialogue we will get us to the right place… where everyone is more involved and happy.”

Tapi, kata-kata orang yang bersyukur adalah ‘everything is enough and less is more than enough’. Detik ini saya termalu dengan kata-kata sendiri.Sepatutnya, saya perlu bersyukur kepada Allah SWT, dianugerahi perkerjaan yang lebih baik dari orang lain..

Tetapi kata-kata dari golongan barat ni, walaupon ‘less is more‘, actually is ‘more than less’ maksudnye untuk mendapatkan gambaran tepat konsep minimal bagi di aplikasikan dalam kehidupan sebenarnye adalah tinggi harga bayarannye…..

Seperti ingin mereka bentuk rumah dalam konsep yang minimal..rumah yang mempunyai konsep minimal mungkin adalah sebuah rumah yang mahal kosnya, berbanding ingin mempunyai rumah dengan keperluan minimal.

Hakikatnya, menjadi seorang insan yang minimal dengan amal ibadah yang tidak minimal adalah lebih terkesan dalam hati saya..mampukah kita dan saya menjadi insan yang sebegitu..kata saya kita perlu..perlu bergerak ke arah itu.

Mungkin saya tersasar dari maksud minimal ini……..Gamba saye bersama Niena yang sungguh ‘minimal’
