Lately i am fascinated by words.

it is remarkable to me that we actually understand each other.

usually, when we talk, we understand each other quite well.

despite the fact that our brains and souls are very individual.

my appeal to you is let’s invent new words.

comments and suggestions are highly welcome. perhaps we can make some words really popular?

if i understand correctly, ‘quiz’ was invented in the University of Chicago in the 60s.

Wikipedia adds this note:

There is a well-known myth about the word “quiz”, which says that in 1791 a Dublin theater owner named James Daly made a bet that he could introduce a word into the language within twenty-four hours. He then went out and hired a group of street urchins to write the word “quiz”, which was a nonsense word, on walls around the city of Dublin. Within a day, the word was common currency and had acquired a meaning (since no one knew what it meant, everyone thought it was some sort of test) and Daly had some extra cash in his pocket. However, there is no evidence to support the story, and the term was already in use before the alleged bet in 1791.[1]

my new word for this post is:

‘News it’.

what does it mean? ‘

news it! – something you say to someone who just bought a new item. ‘תתחדש’ in hebrew

perhaps the salespeople at Banana Republic will great you on the way out with ‘News it’, instead of ‘have a nice day’ or ‘thanks for shopping with us’

Southampton, known as ‘the gateway to the world’, has seen many visits from the world

Southampton, known as ‘the gateway to the world’, has seen many visits from the world’s greatest ocean liners, including the QE2 and the Titanic.

Every year the city hosts sailing events, such as the Southampton Boat Show, which attracts tourists from around the world.

The port rose from humble beginnings. The ancient seaport of Hamptun, from which the city gets its name, appears in some of the country’s earliest historical records. It was in Roman times that Southampton’s first port was first built on the River Itchen. Raids by the French on the 14th century led to the construction of forts, or walls, some of which still stand today. Bargate and Westgate are two of the best preserved Medieval Town Walls in the UK.

During the following centuries, Southampton’s status as a port grew. It was in 1415 that Henry V sailed to France and Agincourt, and in 1620 English Puritans set sail in search of the New World, on The Mayflower.

Competition from other ports saw trade decrease until the opening of the first dock in 1836.

The steam age developed, and so did the city of Southampton. Adding to this development was the arrival of the railway from London and its shipping industry.

In the 1930s, ships sailed from Southampton around the globe, making it the ‘Gateway to the World’. Unfortunately, Southampton’s sucess became its downfall when the city was flattened during World War Two.

Since then, the city has been rebuilt and redeveloped. The city remained Britain’s leading port in the 1950s and 60s. In 1962 over half a million passengers passed through the port, as well as 4% of imported cargo into Britain. The 1970s saw the port changed by some older docks becoming redundant. The number of passengers travelling through the ports of declined as air travel took off in the 60s. In the 1980s and 90s some of the old docks were converted into areas of shops and offices and marinas.

The 1938 handbook to Southampton Docks states:

“Within comparatively recent years, Southampton has become established as one of the foremost commercial seaports of Britain. The facilities and equipment are among the finest in the world, and the development of the dock system under Railway Company ownership has been marked by an era of progress unparalleled in the history of the port. This great increase in trade has conferred upon Southampton the title of Britain’s Premier Passenger Port and also the forth port in respect of the value of freight traffic dealt with.” Today, whilst visitors stop to admire the QE2 harboured in Southampton’s docks, it might surprise them to know that Southampton is also the home of the fighter plane “Supermarine Spitfire” or “Spitfire” for short, designed for use by the RAF in World War II.

It’s no surprise that Southampton’s port became known as the ‘Gateway to the World’.

The guest list for Tuesday’s gala remains a secret, but it should solidify who is considered a VIP in the Obama White House. The dinner honors India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Los Angeles Times/Katherine Skiba—What’s the hottest ticket in the nation’s capital? An engraved invitation to Tuesday’s White House state dinner, the first hosted by President Obama.

He and the first lady will honor India’s prime minister. But in a departure from the traditional venue — the elegant State Dining Room — the Obamas will gather with a few hundred VIPs in a huge, heated tent on the South Lawn.

The guest list for the black-tie gala remains a closely guarded secret. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, will certainly be there.

Several notables are good bets, such as Oprah Winfrey and Chicago hotel billionaire Penny Pritzker, as are top Obama aides David Axelrod, Valerie Jarrett and Rahm Emanuel.

Dee Dee Myers, who served as President Clinton’s press secretary, said the lobbying by people seeking an invite had probably been relentless.

A dinner menu from the Clinton White House

“The first [state dinner] is always the most dramatic,” Myers said.

“First impressions are important. That’s your A list, that’s your top game right there. By the time you get to the eighth state dinner, it’ll be a lot less important.”

The gargantuan tent affords a bigger crowd than could fit in the State Dining Room, which holds 140.

State dinners generally draw administration officials and members of Congress, the Cabinet and the diplomatic corps. Obama donors and corporate titans, Hollywood glamour, athletic greats and leading artists are bound to be thrown into the mix, possibly joined by some academics and journalists.

And the morning after, hotheads left off the list are bound to let off steam.

Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh

“There’s always a few angry calls,” Myers said, “because people read the guest list” in the morning papers.

But until the dinner takes place, the heat is on, perhaps for no two people more than Desiree Rogers, the White House social secretary, and Cristeta Comerford, the White House’s top chef.

Myers was a guest at a few state dinners put on by Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is another guaranteed attendee Tuesday. As Secretary of State, she hand-delivered the invitation to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in July.

Tented parties for state dinners aren’t entirely new. In President Clinton’s final year in office, he had about 700 guests under a tent for an earlier Indian prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee.

It was the first time that this holiday has ever been celebrated at the White House. Members of the Sikh community from around the country were invited to celebrate the occasion with traditional hymns led by the Sikh Kirtani Chanters from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India. Several administration officials were in attendance, including Dr. John Holdren (Office of Science & Technology Policy), Tina Tchen (Office of Public Engagement), Michael Strautmanis (Chief of Staff to Valerie Jarrett), Adolfo Carrion (Urban Affairs), and Nancy Anne DeParle (Health Reform).
The first Sikhs arrived as laborers in the western United States around 1899 and gradually moved around the country. They went on to become owners of successful businesses, serve honorably in the U.S. military in both world wars and other conflicts, lawyers, doctors, bankers, and members of many other professions.

…has an end. But, hopefully not for some time, as this is my first post. Until then, I have lit this tiny signal fire in a sea of signal fires, and for those who make out its glow amidst the rest, hopefully you will light yours as well.

Well if you are here and reading this, you probably follow my poetry and ramblings on Facecrack, I thought it might be a good idea to consolidate my ideas to a blog and join the 21st century. It seems this is what all the cool kids are doing these days (yes Bruce that includes, you fellow blogger!).

Here you can find an archive of all my current poems. Feel free to comment here or on facebook or in your own head, I have no preference. Though I will say that all my poetic work will be both here and on facebook, I can’t say the same for whatever random blogging I decide to do. Although lordy it would be ideal if facebook just had a good blogging system. You think they would’ve figured that one out by now.

More to follow. Stay tuned.

Callie Shell: “It was primary morning in New Hampshire. Barack and Michelle Obama had been campaigning separately all week. In the first few months of 2008 their private time seemed to consist of a few crossover moments in back hallways before rallies. This moment was rare and you could tell they just loved being able to sit together. Jan. 8, 2008.”

Reading back on my first blog post, it didn’t flow very well at all. It’s because I need to just type out my thoughts and shouldn’t spend to much time trying to put it into words. I should just type it out and if I get it to follow my train of thought, it should come out more natural and flow better than my first one. It doesn’t seemed like I covered everything that came up in my mind and skipped over some stuff and that causes it to be kind of like awkward to read. I don’t know how to explain it, really, it just doesn’t go together well. I will work on that.

Even just after that first post, though, I did feel like I got to get in touch better with my own thoughts so that was good. Hopefully I will like this blogging thing.

Falcons forward Chad Wiseman scored the lone shootout goal for either side in the third round, and Springfield goaltender Devan Dubnyk denied all five Bears attempts after making 29 saves through regulation and overtime.

Each side scored once in the second and third periods. Keith Aucoin and Alexandre Giroux gave Hershey leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Falcons responded each time on markers by Colton Fretter and Ryan O’Marra.

Springfield improved to 5-1-1-0 in its last seven contests, while the Bears’ five-game winning streak ended. Hershey is still 9-1-0-1 in its last 11 outings.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender John Curry stopped 29 shots in net to help his club snap a short two-game losing skid.

BINGHAMTON 4, ALBANY 1
Ryan Keller netted two more goals and Josh Hennessy also scored twice to pace Binghamton past visiting Albany by a 4-1 count at the Broome County Arena.

Keller’s two tallies give him a league-leading 13 for the season, and the first-year Senator has found the back of the net in four consecutive games (5-2-7).

Hennessy snapped an 11-game drought with his two goals, both of which came on the power play after Albany had cut the Sens’ lead to 2-1 on a Jamie McBain power play strike midway through the second frame.

It marked the second straight night that the River Rats managed just one goal, both resulting in losses.

Binghamton goaltender Andy Chiodo earned the win with 25 saves, while Albany’s Mike Murphy took the loss despite making 46 saves on the night.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Crunch grabbed a 2-0 second-period lead on goals by Maksim Mayorov and Kevin Harvey. Mayorov’s tally came shorthanded against a Hartford power play that entered the night ranked first in the AHL this season at 26.5 percent.

It remained a 2-0 Syracuse lead until the Wolf Pack finally got on the board courtesy of a shorthanded goal by defenseman Ilkka Heikkinen with just two seconds to play in regulation.

That marker spoiled the shutout bid for Crunch goaltender Kevin Lalande, who still picked up the victory with 22 saves on 23 shots on net.

Hartford lost in regulation for just the second time in its last 10 contests (7-2-0-1).

BRIDGEPORT 4, ABBOTSFORD 3 (SO)
Bridgeport climbed out of a 3-1 deficit in the third period and then converted all three of its shootout tries to take a 4-3 road win over Abbotsford at the Entertainment & Sports Centre.

The Sound Tigers swept their two-game weekend set with the Heat and improved to 4-0-0-1 in their last five games overall, on the heels of a five-game losing skid.

Sean Bentivoglio netted a pair of regulation goals and converted a shootout attempt for the Sound Tigers. Bentivoglio’s second regulation marker cut Bridgeport’s deficit to 3-2 at 3:39 of the third period, and Jesse Joensuu tallied the equalizer at 11:16. Both goals came on the power play.

Trevor Smith and Greg Moore also registered shootout goals for Bridgeport, and goaltender Scott Munroe denied three of Abbotsford’s four tries after making 41 saves through the first 65 minutes.

Garth Murray notched a pair of regulation goals for the Heat, and Riley Armstrong posted a goal and an assist. Mikael Backlund recorded Abbotsford’s lone shootout tally in the third round.

The Heat are now winless in their last three games, all at home (0-2-0-1), and will begin a four-game road trip on Wednesday in Peoria.

TEXAS 4, ROCKFORD 3 (OT)
Maxime Fortunus’ second goal of the night came 3:52 into overtime as Texas escaped with a 4-3 road win over Rockford at the MetroCentre on Saturday.

Sergei Korostin and defenseman Andrew Hutchinson also scored for the Stars, who built a 2-0 lead late in the second period and held a 3-1 advantage 1:36 into the third.

But Mark Cullen single-handedly knotted it back up for the IceHogs, scoring on the power play at 6:04 and at even strength a little more than 11 minutes later. Defenseman Simon Danis-Pepin also lit the lamp for Rockford, which has alternated wins and losses in its last eight games.

Stars goaltender Brent Krahn extended his personal winning streak to 10 games by making 41 saves on 44 shots in net.

Texas shook off a 4-1 loss in Grand Rapids on Friday and improved to 10-1-2-1 in its last 14 outings.

CHICAGO 3, PEORIA 1
Chicago scored three times in the third period to rally from a 1-0 deficit and skate off with a 3-1 win over visiting Peoria before 11,755 fans at Allstate Arena.

Tim Stapleton tallied the equalizer for the Wolves just 1:14 into the third frame, and Johnny Pohl netted the game-winner 2:06 later. Brett Sterling, who assisted on Stapleton’s marker, added an empty-netter with a minute to play.

Jason Krog chipped in two assists for Chicago, and goaltender Peter Mannino made 40 saves on 41 shots to pick up the win in just his third appearance of the season (2-0-0).

Nicholas Drazenovic gave the Rivermen a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at 10:15 of the opening period. Peoria managed only one goal a night after scoring a season-high seven in a 7-2 win at San Antonio.

Argumento

I want to know though….what are all the words of profanity? I consider f*** s*** d*** and motherf*** to be actual profanity words. While ass and bitch to be regular words.

Don’t get me wrong though! Ass, bitch and all the other words are offensive but the difference is the dictionary refers to the other words as being ’swear’ or ‘curse’ words while bitch and ass aren’t.

First of all, I am a Bad Blogger. It has been at least a month since I last posted here. I’m g

First of all, I am a Bad Blogger. It has been at least a month since I last posted here. I’m going to be better; I promise. I really, really need to do some photography. With any luck, the sun will be out and beautiful when my husband and I go down to California this week to spend Thanksgiving with his side of the family.

Secondly, a Knitterly Confession: I have never blocked anything. I know that blocking is supposed to be one of the most wonderful things you can do for your knits. It really finishes them off and helps your knitting be all that it can be. Admittedly, I have an excuse: I used to knit almost exclusively in acrylic, and you can’t really block acrylic. However, I now knit almost exclusively in wool, and you can definitely block wool. And you should block wool. I should block wool. Somehow, though, I never got around to it. Not officially, if you know what I mean. I generally block my socks, for instance, by putting them on my feet and dancing gleefully about.

On this day, however, I am blocking something. I knitted a beret based on Crazy Aunt Purl’s Super Simple Fast and Easy Chunky Hand Knit Beret. It was, as advertised, super simple, as well as being fast and easy. I made it out of Lamb’s Pride Bulky in “Royal Purple Flutter,” which is a delightfully bright purple. However, it came out looking…odd. Really odd. It had this funny little point on the top. I solved the point by redoing the decreases, but the hat was still a funny shape. Since I want to take it down to California and not look like a total dork, I decided there was only one solution. And that was…dun dun DUUUUUNNNNNN!…blocking.

Luckily, I had precisely the right size of plate to make this happen properly. I put the plate inside the beret, arranged it carefully, and soaked it under the water faucet. I really hope it’ll be dry by tomorrow.

I also hope I remember to take pictures of it.

I have many, many Finished Objects to show you. I’m just not sure when. With any luck, I’ll post a whole bunch this week. Right now, I’m still recovering from the Evil Chest Cold that attacked me last week, so I’m going to work on the scarf to match the beret.

Job Description

I work in the art department under the supervision of Steve Martin, one of the art directors, who passes work over to me. It begins with an Art Department Work Request Form that Steve hands to me which is basically a visual merchandise order that is requesting artwork to be designed and formatted to fit in a specific area. Each form contains the dimensions of the area in which the artwork is to cover, such as a window or light box, along with a designated image type(s) (e.g. surf, skate, snow, girls, logo, lifestyle, or boys) that will be used as the primary artwork that I must then re-layout to appropriately fit within in the dimensions. The form also contains information such as store location, job number, job due date, etc.

After looking through the form, my job, then, is to create a folder with the job name and number on my computer in which all art files will be saved, create a Photoshop document to the specified size and specs, layout the designated artwork to fit in the document size making sure nothing is being cut off or covered, burn the flattened .TIFF file to a CD, and print a small preview of the design with the job name and number on the bottom of the printout. Finally, I give the form, CD and printout back to Steve for him to send out to a printing company to be produced.
