I had a moment with August Rodin’s “Monument to Balzac”

Staring up at the dark, richly sculpted bronze–imperfect; imprecise–

I though, who the fuck is this?

Then someone told me

Then I remembered the Meredith Wilson musical, “The Music Man”

and how the name “Balzac” is scored by Meredith WIlson

as an upwardly launched plosive, which, upon cresting via an upward a glissando,

plummets back downward to plant the second syllable in pitch area lower than the pitch area where the first syllable was initiated

This score is meant to express that the characters of River City, Iowa

regard the writings of–and therefore, the name of–Blazac

as inappropriate,

as immoral,

as déclassé

But Rodin’s score for Balzac is only upward,

launches, likewise, from a plosive base

but then increases in mass as it rises,

a tower,

a towering figure,

a phallic, triumphal assertion of the canonic

2009 Voodoo Experience
New Orleans, LA

It's not just a music festival

The Voodoo Experience in New Orleans is in its eleventh year. Yet somehow, year after year, it’s one music festival I had yet to enjoy until yesterday. Voodoo has been on my to-do list for several years, not only because I hadn’t done it yet, but because it’s in New Orleans (one of my favorite cities), during Halloween weekend.

This year’s line-up includes Eminem, Justice, Silversun Pickups, The Black Keys, Fischerspooner, The Vettes, Janelle Monae, Kiss, Jane’s Addiction, Gogol Bordello, Wolfmother, The Black Lips, The Flaming Lips, Mutemath, Brand New, the Pogues, and many more.

There will be an in-depth review to follow including my interview with The Vettes and their adopted brother (who’s also in the band).  While I leave you with that cliffhanger, here are some pictures and quick highlights from Day 1.

Que mejor que despertar un lunes escuchando musiquita que te haga sentir!!

No, no es un titular de la revista Cuore, pero sí es la demostración que la unión de tres genios personas con talento, no siempre tiene que dar excelentes resultados. Por partes. Alex Gopher puede considerarse ya, una leyenda del house francés, era uno de los dj’s de referencia en los noventa, y aunque su edición de discos es bastante limitada, sí que tiene en su haber, multitud de maxis o remezclas y para gente de todo tipo. Para celebrar sus quince años de actividad mezcladora, ha decidido sacar un disco doble recopilatorio con sus mejores mezclas hechas a partir del 2004 y algún tema inédito, bajo el nombre de “My New Remixes”. Lo interesante del cd, a parte de las mezclas hechas para Ladyhawke, autoKratz, WhoMadeWho, Fischerspooner o Kraftwerk, es que uno de los temas inéditos que contenía, es una colaboración con Air y Etienne de Crecy. El resultado se puede escuchar en el video, y tampoco es para tirar cohetes, personalmente, me empieza a gustar a partir del minuto 3 cuando el asunto se empieza a animar…… El disco sale el 2 de noviembre y por cierto, Etienne de Crecy estará en el The Loft de Razzmatazz el próximo viernes 23 de octubre.

Este festival tapatio que en su primera emisión en el 2007 nos trajo a Björk, Jay jay johanson, Ratatat, MSTRKTFT y Claude von stroke y que en el 2008 no hubo festival este 2009 regresa y en grande este 21 de noviembre en el foro alterno en el bajio en guadalajara, jalisco. Este año tiene un buen cartel entre ellos estan: Dj shadow, Grace jones, Röyksopp, Fischerspooner, Mutan clan(timo mass y santos), PNAU, Aether, Does it offend you yeah?, Hercules & Love affair, The whip, Grafton primary y Kavinsky. El precio de los boletos varia yo comre los mios antes del 20 de septiembre y me costaron 800 pesos c/u en este momento estan en $950 hasta el 18 de octur, en $1100 hasta el 15 de noviembre, y en $1200 hasta el dia del evento, los boletos se pueden comprar hasta en el oxxo mas informacion de la compra de boletos  aqui . La cita era en Escenica, el viernes 18 de septiembre de 09. Fischersponer regresaba ala ciudad despues de medio venir hace dos años en el Forum de las Culturas. Digo medio venir por que solo vino uno de los dos que son. En esta ocasión no era gratis y la gente se dió cita en el lugar para disfrutar el concierto, todo parecia normal. En la pagina oficial salia la fecha del concierto en nuestra ciudad y todo. Pero el concierto empezó con una serie de djs locales que con el paso de las horas irian calentando el ambiente. Total dieron las 3.00 am y Fisherspooner ni sus luces.  ¿Qué pasó? Nadie sabe pero cuando pagas por un evento con alguien en específico y ese alguien no se presenta se le conoce como fraude, aqui y en China. No sé si debo odiar  a Fischerspooner o si debo odiar la organización del lugar, lo que si sé es que quiero mi dinero de vuelta, al igual que los otros asistentes me imagino y pues a proceder con la papelería correspondiente para obtenerlo.

Мой многоуважаемый коллега, Raketa, недавно намекнул, что жестких треков нынче хороших, как днем с огнем. Я с ним солидарен по многим вопросам, но решил-таки выложить полюбившиеся за последнее время треки, которые, как раз немного жестковаты, а по сравнению с диско и совсем много.

Давно я с таким удовольствием не слушал и не играл боевик от Designer Drugs. Именно слушал, так он меня зацепил своей напористостью и мелодикой. Не могу оторваться, все слушаю и слушаю.

Fischerspooner – The Best Revenge (Designer Drugs Remix) (alt)

Foamo, в отличие от братьев по оружию A1 Bassline и Hostage не как не хочет сдавать позиции, практически каждый его ремикс достоин внимания и треклиста полуночного сета. Если последнее время заметно, что с бейслайновыми басами постоянно экспериментируют, пихают их в каждом квадрате чуть ли не в случайном порядке. У Foamo же всегда четкая выверенная структура, как у Jack Beats, но гораздо динамичнее.

Dub Pistols – I’m In Love (Foamo Remix) (alt)

Jefferson Airplane, которую вы знаете по супер-хиту всех Somebody To Love, прямо-таки преобразилась в руках новичка Verdis, сплошной нью-рейв, как в старые добрые.

Ну и постепенно сбавляем жесткость треков Acid Girls, которые не успокаиваются и продолжают эксперименты со звуком, зачастую удачные, как и в случае с этим треком.

Chew Fu этакий постмодернист, берет ПОПулярный трек, здесь добавит, там чуть-чуть, получается совсем на грани безвкусицы, но слушать приятно. Как ни странно, еле нашел этот довольно известный ремикс. Пригодится.

Chris Isaak – Wicked Games (Chew Fu Refix ft. Lee Majors) (alt)

Boys Noize, как мне кажется, очень много позаимствовал у Para One, взял прерывистые синты, скачущие ударные, все узнаваемо, если сравнивать ранние работы последнего и последние работы первого. Правда вот Boys Noize дальше ушли, стильнее стали, хоть зачастую и в ущерб мелодичности.

Что творится, португальцы и диско, странное на первый взгляд сочетание. Но если проследить, как менялось звучание этих пионеров нью-рейва, все встанет на свои места. Как и в этом очень ярком и приятном ремиксе, на, связавшей свою карьеру с Келвином Харрисом, Kylie Minogue.

Когда же уже Style Of Eye начнут ставить на цирковых представлениях. Что не трек, то улыбка на лице расплывается. И ходишь потом месяцами напеваешь: пуру-рурум-пурум-пум-пум.

Ну и наконец жемчужина нью-диско за последнее время, как мне кажется. Grum, из новичка за год превратился в чутко ориентирующемся в стиле и мелодике профессионала. Очень красивый трек, когда ставишь его, кажется, что все его обажают.

Chemical Brothers – Private Psychedelic Reel
Last track off their masterpiece Dig Your Own Hole. A monumental build leads to all hell breaking loose and some masterful tweaking of builds and drops all the way thru. Named after the Beatle’s rumored “music to take drugs to” collection. The Brothers routinely close their shows with this headcrusher, which is truly best experienced live.

Death in Vegas – Aisha (featuring Iggy Pop)
Iggy joins the Richard Fearless production collective (sans peanut butter) to deliver some very dark lyrics about serial killers over the greatest cycled riff since metal lost all of its hair. Nothing subtle about this. Just great rocking fun, all huge riffs, killer drums and menacing vocals. Rock like rock should be.

Fischerspooner – The 15th
Electro-weirdos Fischerspooner take on a Wire track with some unexpectedly amazing results. Begone angular guitars! Make way for some perfectly lovely synth pads and vocal reverb. Beautifully done. Wouldn’t look out of place soundtracking some sort of heartsick montage in an ’80s teen romance flick or being belted out by everybody and their mother in Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest (if that latest is Magnolia… it would seem terribly out of place in There Will Be Blood).

Hardknox – Fire Like This
You know this song. You just think you don’t. Once you click play, it’ll all come rushing back. Another breakbeat/big beat group from back in the early ’00s, when heady young record execs thought techno would take over the US. Needless to say, MCR, Nickelback, Limp Bizkit, Britney Spears, Black Eyed Peas, etc. Still, an enjoyable track that asks nothing more than to get your ass on up out of that chair, whether to bust a move or bust some heads.

Kitchens of Distinction – Quick as Rainbows
Those of you who grew up like I did (white, suburban, mid-30’s) will immediately be transported back to the MTV of yore, whose Sunday nights were essential viewing, what with 120 (fucking) Minutes playing the music you actually listened to. Chiming guitars, airy vocals, soaring synthwork. All this added up to college/alternative rock that actually was still the “alternative.” A gorgeous heartbreak of a song.

ESCUCHA AQUÍ NUESTRA LISTA DE AGOSTO

E: music4girls no nos vamos de vacaciones… bueno, sí. Pero para algo existen el wifi y la conexión inalámbrica. Para poder cumplir con nuestras obligaciones mensuales como Little Boots manda. A continuación os regalamos nuestra lista más veraniega, con un puntito de festividad nocturna, un poquito de pose cool, un poquito de esnobismo sustancial (aunque no demasiado) y, sobre todo, con muchos temazos que, como siempre os podéis descargar para escucharlos, disfrutarlos o criticarlos a muerte, que ya sabéis que nos encanta que comentéis.
Entran The Big Pink. Grupo que a mí me sonó a electro petardo la primera vez que Raül lo mencionó pero que poco tiene que ver con bailes desaforados con nocturnidad y alevosía. Dos chavalotes que a priori parecen sacados de un reportaje de Comando Actualidad pero que entregan un temazo de shoegaze pop como Dominos, capas y capas de distorsión perfectamente ensambladas en uno de los temazos de la temporada que viene. En la parte más relajada de la lista el pop ensoñador y triposo de Grizzly Bear, experimentación hedonista y preciosa en una canción que transcurre por tus venas como un chute perfecto de psicodelia azucarada. Estamos muy enganchados a Veckatimest, y no entiendo por qué Raül no le ha dedicado todavía uno de sus snob4girls, porque el disco entero es pura ambrosía. Se mantiene Florence & the Machine, con su recién estrenada nominación a los Mercury Prizes; a mí es que Rabbit Heart me engancha como los mejores momentos de Bat for Lashes, brillo y luminosidad en un tema precioso que la mismísima Goldfrapp hubiera deseado robar para sí misma. Siguiente entrada, Marina Diamandis nos canta que ella no es un Robot, y a nosotros que no nos lo parece, chica. Un tema de pop naïve y maravilloso en su simplicidad. Y finalmente el hit veraniego. Nadie podía filtrar las maravillas del hit del año (¿he dicho yo eso? ¿es todavía pronto para pronunciarse?) mejor que Buffetlibre djs, que junto a Sidechains, cincuenta por ciento de The Requesters, han firmado un remix contundente que lo tiene todo: entradilla trotona, subidones hasta el colapso y breves momentos de verbena veraniega. Está claro que ahora mismo tienen la propuesta más interesante en cuanto a cabinas de electrónica, y en cada momento y a cada paso que dan, se van afianzando más y más. Enganchados estuvimos a sus Rewinds, a sus Hits y ahora a su peculiar visión de Remedy.

R: En pleno subidón Pixar, recuerdo a Edna de Los Increibles diciendo “no capes!” y lo único que me sale es que, para music4girls, “no holidays!“. Nos jodemos. Pero suerte tenemos todo este puñado de jitazos para refrescarnos. Aunque refrescar, lo que se dice refrescar, no es lo que hacen The Dead Weather: sus temazos son brasas (en el buen sentido de la palabra) de barbacoa sureña americana a plena potencia. Ya os avanzamos el video de Treat me like your mother, que está este mes en nuestro primer puesto; y como en breve caerá un análisis pormenorizado de Horehound, mejor no me excedo en mis comentarios… Y paso a Ebony Bones. Más calorcillo. El perfecto para fiestas estivales a las 4 de la madrugada frotando tu sudor contra el de el resto de los asistentes. Ya dijimos en su momento que Bone of my bones está repleto de jits, así que elegir sólo uno ha sido una tortura: The Muzik, sin embargo, resume bastante bien el espíritu de mestizaje perverso del álbum. Casi casi llega a nuestro número 1, pero por un mes hemos decidido sorprenderos y no poner a una de las nuevas divas en la cúspide. Para que no digáis que somos previsibles. Por suerte, Cass McComb refresca el ambiente con su vals de country-folk, acompañado de Karen Black, en Dreams-come-true girl: ese jitazo que, tal y como afirmé, no consigue ensombrecer las excelencias de ese Catacombs que parece no acabarse nunca. Dos novedades jugositas jugositas que van a dar mucho que hablar en los próximos meses. La primera tiene todos los números para convertirse en mi nueva obsesión: Music Go Music suenan al fantasma de las Eurovisiones pasadas de Abba. Y si eso no es suficiente como para aficionarse a la música de estos californianos, cancionacas como Light of Love hacen pensar que ese inminente disco de debut puede ser la solución para todos los aficionados al eurotrash (que somos muchos). Y la segunda entrada espectacular es la de Delphic: la primera vez que escuché This momentary no pude evitar pensar en la ecucación “Underworld + Fischerspooner“. Es decir: elegancia electro (sin el trash) junto a beats cerdos y espaciosos. Lo tienen todo para estar en nuestra lista.

Alright, so today I only wanted to see Silly Kissers, which I missed, trying to redo my last post which vanished because I was stupid and I didn’t save. And also, I wanted to see Fischerspooner but missed quite a bit of that because a big bottle of Australian wine got in the way. Stupid wine.

I did catch a bit of Fischerspooner, the New York duo, before deciding to leave because it was not fantastic enough to keep me there. I knew that today (Day 1 of Osheaga) would be a big day for me…I need to rest. Nonetheless, I still ended up sleeping at 4am. But at least it wasn’t dancing until 4. So I achieved my said rest, sort of.

I’ve entered my monthly Portishead only phase…where I can’t stop listening to Portishead because it is too good and well, why not? Recently, at my going away party at my other flat, my flatmate and I contemporary danced our way through the entirety of Dummy. Amazing.

Listening to Relapse was really painful. I put it off for months and months because I heard the few singles and was extremely unimpressed. But, the other month I decided to give it a shot. And it was horrible. Listening to the album was a constant reminder of what Eminem has turned into from his older days, absolute shite. BUT, I gave it another listen, and realised that there are a few songs on there that are quite amazing, like this one. I wish that the album flowed more like this, but it doesn’t. Oh well. “Beautiful” makes up for all the other crap methinks.

I. Am. Back! My place is finally finished in terms of painting. One of my walls is electric orange aka awesome orange aka the happiest color ever. And it makes me smile and I zone out sometimes in bliss just staring at my perfect wall…aaah…oh…right. The news!

So Osheaga is upon us…yet another festival here in MTL which boasts headliners such as Coldplay, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and The Roots from the 30th until the 2nd of August. Beastie Boys was one of the headliners but you folks don’t need me to tell you the bad news ’cause I’m guessing you’ve already heard it…or seen it. Some bands that I would like to see the most are the Rural Alberta Advantage (review to come soon), The Roots (of course), and MTL’s own, Misteur Valaire (a band I attempted to see a few weeks ago but got the address wrong! Damnit!). But, Osheaga tickets are ludicrously expensive compared to other festivals and the whole quantity versus quality ratio. I am going to be a concert chicken, as I normally am, to see if I can score tickets…but I don’t really know if it’s worth it seeing as there are waaaaay too many conflicts because I am doing a full coverage of MEG MONTREAL!!!

It is pretty much the cooler, hipper, and more danceable part of Osheaga…kind of like a mini Sahara Tent if you will…and yes, I will be going to all the shows. Have I rested up from my Flying Lotus and my MJF crazinesss…a bit. But MEG is gonna be awesome. Watch the trailer below and go after the jump to see the lineup and schedule!

After watching clips of the new Anne Clark live DVD and finding ourselves most impressed with the lineup and the sound she and her band achieve, Softsynth is flashing back to the concert of a lifetime – Depeche Mode, Toronto, 1988, just days before their legendary “101″ concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. It was a lineup that embodied the best of electronic music, three keyboards, Martin Gore making his first fawn-like tentative journeys to the front of the stage to play guitar before retreating to the comfort of his synth downstage, and a charismatic lead vocalist who carried the energy of the show on his shoulders. Since that time we have seen every variance of live set from myriad electronic bands, some of which work nicely, others bring a degree of shame to the genre. in 2009 what kind of set should we come to expect from the leading electronic bands of the day?

For the more conventional rock band setup, this is a trite and obvious question. You strap on the guitar, the drummer sits down at the kit and you rock it out dude! The standard guitar/bass/drums/vocalist lineup, while inherently dull to this blogger, is the mainstay of a live rock set and there is little question of what the lineup will look like (maybe some question of a keyboard player or horn player being invited to sit in, or for the more prog-rock or enjoyably pretentious, perhaps a small string or brass section, or extra precussion unit, but these are extras to the main deal). But for an electronic band there are many questions that must be queried. Laptops or keyboards? Live percussion or programmed? Guitar or no? Full-on trad-rock lineup or something a little closer to the purity of the electronic set? This is one of those rare posts where we solicit your thoughts. What works for you. What drains the essence of what made the band special in the first place?

Our thoughts: it depends on the band in question. Full disclosure – Softsynth is most fond of performance. We have little interest in watching folks stand behind laptops all by their lonesome, occasionally pushing a button (see And One, Erasure, Venus Hum, Chemical Brothers); while a charismatic lead singer (see Erasure, Venus Hum) can carry a show on their shoulders, it’s nice to see the rest of the band occasionally working up a sweat, or at a minimum, playing a fews keys here and there.

So regardless of the sound or lineup an electronic band captures on record the live setup usually falls into one of the following:

- Singer is the only “live” element. See: laptop bands above. These are bands that play backing tapes lifted from the record usually and the lead and sometimes (though not always!) harmonic vocals actually performed.

- Band does the above but adds a major live percussion element (see Nitzer Ebb, VNV Nation until recently). This kind of band still plays to tapes but have one or more live drummers/percussionists to fill out the sound (listen to the live tracks on VNV Nation’s recent Reformation album and it becomes clear the songs are lifted entirely from the albums from which they came with only live banging and singing present.

- Band employs major performance elements using keyboards to capture the sound of the record while allowing for some improvisation with percussion, and sequences pre-recorded and all other parts performed live. Depeche Mode perfected this style, adding live percussion elements (often extremely creatively), and in 1988, some guitar (over the years adding more and more guitar until it was played on pretty much every song, finally even adding drums in the late 90s {after using them as an occasional novelty a few years earlier}). Technoir, Marsheaux and Client are good examples of this approach in more modern times.

- Band “toughs it up a little” adding more traditional instruments (see Depeche Mode post-1993) but still retaining the inherent sound that made people love them, forming a kind of organic/electronic hybrid.

- Full on divorce from their recorded material – keyboards, sometimes performed, sometimes left out altogether. Drums, guitar, even bass – the single most redundant instrument in an electronic band – are the order of the day in an effort to essentially “sound like everyone else” (needless to say this approach is lost on Softsynth). De/Vision, increasingly MESH, Dragonette and many, many others have chosen this route.  Fischerspooner does their own variant on this with their full performance art presentation,

What do you look for when you check out an electronic band? What lineup best captures what you like best about a given band in the genre and why?
