Behind the scenes of Fish in Australian Art

Our current exhibition Fish in Australian art includes over 170 artworks and objects. Ranging from small pieces of jewellery and beautiful sculpture, to paintings and drawings, video work and light installation pieces, the exhibition presents varying styles and ways fish have been represented in Australian art over time.

The organisation of all of these artworks was a mammoth job. To tell us more about the process, we had a chat with our registrar Will Mather in this video interview.

Fish in Australian art opens tomorrow

Tomorrow, our new exhibition Fish in Australian art opens to the public and runs until 1 October. As a keen lover of visual arts, I’m particulary excited about this exhibition. I can’t wait to spend some time exploring the show! The exhibition features over 100 works of art and design, including pieces by celebrated artists such as William Buelow Gould, Conrad Martens, Rupert Bunny, Margaret Olley, William Dobell, Arthur Boyd, Yvonne Koolmatrie, John Olsen, John Brack, Michael Leunig, Craig Walsh and many more.

Over the past week I dropped by the exhibition space to see how the installtion was going. Here are a few snaps, with more available for viewing on Flickr.

As Organicities approaches in 2 weeks I’m considering how to refresh the installation of my sculptures, especially those that are longing their “natural” environment. To be more specific, I’m talking about “From the Bottom of the Sea Sculptures“. To make it feel more comfortable, and “like at home” I’m having a go at testing it’s unfinished cousin, plaster ball, immersed in water. There might be even special guests joining, it would be VIF to be precise. To find out more about them, pop in to Debut Contemporary on Saturday15th October 12-5. Testing of an unfinished plaster ball in water, is making me think that VIF guests will be coming in! You'll be sure to find out their names on 15.10.11, in Debut Contemporary.

The Fish That Walked by Anne Sexton

Up from oysters
and the confused weeds,
out of the tears of God,
the wounding tides,
he came.
He became a hunter of roots
and breathed like a man.
He ruffled through the grasses
and became known to the sky.
I stood close and watched it all.
Beg pardon, he said
but you have skin divers,
you have hooks and nets,
so why shouldn’t I
enter your element for a moment?
Though it is curious here,
usually awkward to walk.
It is without grace.
There is no rhythm
in this country of dirt.

And I said to him:
From some country
that I have misplaced
I can recall a few things…
but the light of the kitchen
gets in the way.
Yet there was a dance
when I kneaded the bread
there was a song my mother
used to sing…
And the salt of God’s belly
where I floated in a cup of darkness.
I long for your country, fish.

The fish replied:
You must be a poet,
a lady of evil luck
desiring to be what you are not,
longing to be
what you can only visit.

What is Positivism in Art?

positivism is a unique expression of unity, joy, happiness, beauty, bounty and abundance.

Positivism is a creative philosophy and a new school of thought in the world art scene developed by painter E. R. Tagle. a distinct original style, positivism is a unique expression of unity, joy, happiness, beauty, bounty and abundance. Positivism reflects all our culture and religious aspirations as people.

Tagle’s series of canvasses bursts with vibrant color and energy projecting the richness of life’s bountiful blessings. Beauty is portrayed in its most pristine form, with the trees in its greenest state and seas abound with fishes and marine life and nature that is free from destruction.
