Di PVJ baru aja ada stand yg dibuka dgn nama “Fish Spa”.
Tadinya gue gak tau apa, tp setelah diliat, bikin penasaran juga pengen nyoba.
Disini, kaki kita dimasukkan ke dalam semacam akuarium yang isinya ikan2 kecil Garra Rufa (Nibble Fish dan Kangal Fish).
Terus tugas ikan2 ini adalah menggigiti sel kulit mati kaki kita.
Harganya Rp80.000 / 20 menit. o.O
Maaaahhhaaallll….. (kalo menurut gue)

Untungnya mas-nya berbaik hati, bila ingin nyoba pake tangan, gratis.
Jadi pertama2 gue coba memasukkan jari telunjuk tangan kiri gue dgn takut2 (berhubung ngebayangin kata “digigit”).
Terus ada 2 ikan yang nyamperin dan beneran digigit! Rasanya geli dan tangan gue refleks langsung ngangkat kembali.

Gue tanya ke mas-nya, ada efek sampingnya gak? Kata dia sejauh ini gak ada.
Terus akhirnya gue masukin jari2 tangan kiri gue dan wowww.. langsung diserbu sekitar 20 ikan/lebih.
Pdhl gue liatin orang laen yg nyoba masukin jari2 tangannya, gak diserbu ikan sebanyak itu. Apa jari2 gue saking banyak kulit matinya ya? -_-”
Anyway, berhubung diserbu begitu dan digigit berkali2 disana-sini, langsung deh berasa disetrum listrik dengan tegangan rendah. Geli campur kesetrum, itulah yang gue rasakan. Kata mas-nya sih kesetrum itu berarti lagi bekerja ikan2nya ato efeknya.. apalah itu.. (lupa, hehe). Mas-nya ngejelasin manfaat2nya. Salah satunya utk mengangkat sel kulit mati dan melancarkan peredaran darah.

Setelah nyoba beberapa menit, udahan deh. Efeknya jari telunjuk gue yg paling banyak digigit berasa baal (ato tepatnya seperti kesemutan utk 1-2 jam XP) Tapi biarpun begitu, efek halusnya bener2 terasa. Mungkin kalo bener2 20 menit, kulitnya beneran jadi serasa halus deh.

Buat kamu2 yang rela ngeluarin kocek sebesar Rp80.000, fish spa ini patut dicoba. (lho, kok malah jadi promosi?)

The 3 F’s for today.  Food, fashion, and fish spas.

Today marks week two in Singapore and finally I feel that I am getting out to see more than my neighborhood.  The last few days have been full of exciting adventures all around the city.  Jeannie, my Singaporean food guru, took me and two of my friends Ragnhild and Rachel out to Maxwell  Road Hawker Centre in Chinatown the other day for lunch.  Maxwell’s is renowned for being one of the best hawker centers (food courts) in the city with multiple hawkers (food vendors) being recommended by Singapore’s Makansutra guide (THE food guide).

Me outside the hawker centre.  I’m wearing an Odile cotton poplin dress, perfect for enduring the heat both inside and out.  Maxwell is an open air center so there isn’t any air conditioning, only ceiling fans.  That paired with the hundreds of people eating and all of the stalls cooking can make for a very hot and humid experience.

Linea Pelle cognac leather belt.  Thank God this thing is adjustable, otherwise I would have been super uncomfortable after having stuffed myself silly with all of that delicious food.

Inside, there are two rows of hawker stalls like this.

The fabulous Jeannie waiting in line at Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice stall, which is thought to be the best chicken rice in Singapore.  And for those of you who’ve forgotten, chicken rice is one of Singapore’s national dishes.  This place is a big deal.

Tian Tian.  I first heard about this place on one of my favorite shows, Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations.

The chicken and a side of steamed bean sprouts served family style.  Each of us had our own individual servings of rice.

Jeannie also brought us an oyster omelet and yam cakes.  Mmm-mmm.  We had quite a feast.

We were going to be lame and get boring old iced tea to drink, but Jeannie insisted we try sugar cane juice instead.  “You’re on a tropical island, for goodness sake!”, she exclaimed.  It was AMAZING!!!  Not as sweet as I expected, and absolutely delish.  Proving, yet again, that Jeannie knows all.

For dessert, an ice kacang which is a bowl full of fluffy shaved ice, topped with colorful syrups, red beans, corn, condensed milk, attap seeds, and tasty gelatin cubes.  Sounds weird, I know, but it is actually refreshingly delicious.  There are versions of this dessert all over Asia.

Later that evening, Ragnhild and I decided to go to Kenko fish spa in our neighborhood to get the dead skin on our feet nibbled off by some fish.  This photo (lol!) is when Ragnhild first put her feet in the water.  She was shrieking at how ticklish it was.

My feet with the fish!!!  Holy CRAP!!!  It was a crazy weird sensation to have little fishies munching away on my feet and legs for a half hour.  It starts off tickling, but then you get used to it and it feels good.  And when it was done, I did feel a huge difference.  My skin felt very well exfoliated and soft.  Such a cool experience.

Brought the boys to Night Safari. Been there 2 years ago I think. But not much night family activity in Singapore… Bought the 2-in-1 park hoppers deal. So will also be visiting Jurong Bird Park in the coming weeks.

this is not my only fear i braved through today.

Tonight I tried another dish that is apparently quite popular in Korea, especially in the summer months when it’s especially hot and humid. It’s shaved ice, topped with ice cream, mochi-type jelly, toasted cereal flakes, slivers of almonds and sweetened red beans. One of the other knitters at the weekly stitch-n-bitch (snb) meeting was eating it and it looked good so I gave it a try. It was indeed very good and I’m glad that I tried it; I will be eating more of it this summer. When I ordered the dessert, I also placed an order for fish spa.

Fish spa, for those who are not familiar with the concept, are aggressive little fish from Africa that feed on dead skin. I first experienced it during a trip to Singapore many years ago. The fish that feasted on my feet in Singapore were small and mild compared to the ones that devoured the skin on my feet tonight. Apparently they hadn’t been fed in awhile. I screamed the first time I slid my feet into the tank of piranha-like fish. I could not help but yelp this time as well; it’s such a strange and intense feeling to have a swarm of hungry fish biting into my sole, toes and ankles. After what seemed like forever, I pulled my feet out of the water and asked a fellow knitter how much time had lapse. We paid 2,000 Won (less than $2) for 20 minutes. She replied, “It hasn’t even been five minutes yet.” At that time I did not want to put my feet back in the water but everybody else seemed to be doing okay, even the young daughter of one of the knitters. I felt like such a whim and reluctantly slipped my feet back into the pool of ravaging spa fish. I’m not sure how they can call it spa fish because, although the fish may have been exfoliating my feet of dead skin, the rest of my body was tense and I just couldn’t seem to let myself relax. I am amazed that people do the fish spa to their entire bodies. I don’t even want to imagine it.

After our fish spa, we returned to our knitting and eating. The cafe offers complimentary bread (with butter and jam), cookies and popped treats. When I looked around at the other tables, most people had plates full of toasted bread, which they were washing down with cups of coffee, tea or fruit smoothies. The cafe is a great place to linger for an afternoon or evening.

We finished our snb session and walked out together to head for our respective modes of transportation home, but on the way, we took a detour to pick up some kim bap. I ordered the vegetable roll, which I thought would be rice, seaweed and vegetables. When I unwrapped the tinfoil and placed one of the sliced pieces into my mouth, my vegetable roll included ham and imitation crab meat. Not what I was expecting but I must have been hungry because I somehow managed to finish the entire roll before I reached the subway station for my ride home.

Surprisingly the Gangnam subway station was packed. I looked at my watch and it showed 10:20pm. I didn’t understand where all the people were coming from. When the train arrived, I didn’t have to even walk into the train because the crowd behind me just pushed me in. I do not like sardine-packed subway rides, especially after a hot and humid day. Yuck!

Arranged to have dinner with Jeremy & the rest @ The Naked Fish Shoppe. I got to know about this place through someone’s blog & i thought can give it a try. And most importantly the location is near for most of us lah =)

Sorry to Jeannie! Have to make you drive to Yio Chu Kang.

Food ia alright lah! I had this parrot fish dish. Maybe i prefer my fish to be more moist but it’s still decent lah – just dip the fish with more chilli sauce. Btw i quite like the cream sauce that comes with it. Soup should be the instant kind but @ least it was hot & the garlic bread is not too bad.

I actually like the ambience more & the lamps are also in the shape of a ship to suit the ocean theme restaurant – quite interesting! And there was this lady (i think is the boss) & she was nice & friendly! Business is pretty good too.

And if you come during the weekends where the parking @ Grassroots Club can be quite packed, do go to the swimming complex behind Grassroots Club to find a parking lot. U can enter from behind & somewhere on your left is the restaurant.

By the way, this place is Halal certified so muslims friends can also come here to enjoy the food.

Fish Spa Time!

 Once again i discover this place for fish spa from someone’s blog. As there was a promotion 2 for 1 so i deicde to try it with my brother & his gf =)  The rest didn’t join us after dinner – Jeannie has to meet her friends , Jeremy & Michelle are very tired as they were out the whole day!

  Oh man… It was quite an experience! Now i know why my cousin Qirong was like “screaming” for help when she had her first fish spa session @ sixth ave (think it was called Kampong Fish Therapy) earlier on this year.

  Initially it was very ticklish & i really couldn’t take it! Haha. Plus it was actually quite scary to see all the fishes ”attacking” my legs @ one go. Aiyoh…. HELP ME ah!!!!

  But a while later, i got used to the tickling sensation & could just sit & let the fishes “bite” my legs! =)  It’s not so bad after all & my skin really feel nice & smooth!

 By the way Angeline was a bit unhappy with the service. Cause she requested for another towel but this lady told her that her’s still look quite dry, does she need another one? Then when this caucasian asked for a towel, the same lady gave him one without asking. Hmmm… Not too nice lah!

Other than this incident, it was overall a good experience. Will go back again due to the reasonable price & the environment + service was quite ok.

Dessert Time @ Ah Chew

Yes!!! After the 1/2 hour fish spa, we proceed on to Liang Seah Street for dessert! Had my favourite Mango Sago =)  Talking about mango, i must go to “Xu Liu San” @ HK for the yummy mango dessert! Yeah!!! Counting down to my holiday trip =)

Yes… I was feeling kind of crazy that night! Don’t know why… We were walking around & i kept seeing all the steamboat restaurants so i told my brother “Hey… I got cravings for some hot soup!”.

I think it was about 10pm when we walked into Tian Tian (it cost about $14 after a certain timing).

Here we are ENJOYING the steamboat! My brother & Angeline very ON lah!! Haha…

It was a great night out BUT bad for my tummy! Haha.

By the way, i just got the flu vaccine done today with my brother. Better take some precaution before we travel =)

Sunday continued to tour friends around Singapore. We tried out Straits Kitchen at the Hyatt which is an all you can eat buffet that serves a lot of the typical food found in Singapore. The other expats have been there before but for me it was my first time. I remember seeing this restaurant featured on Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations and being a fan of the show, I definitely wanted to check it out.

The place is sort of set up like a hawker center where you have different stations/stalls which serve certain types of food. For example they had a satay station, popiah station (fresh lumpia), Indian station, chicken rice station, etc.



The food was good, especially the desert which I piled on to the plate. That being said, I’ve had better for cheaper at the hawker centers. I think I’ve been kinda spoiled hanging out with the locals (co-workers and cousin) who know where the good stuff is. They kinda raised the bar for food so everything at Straits was good but not the best I’ve had. Still, Straits is good place to go to try a little bit of everything if you don’t have the time to go out to all the different hawker centers. Oh and it’s air conditioned unlike the hawker centers which are outdoors.

Afterwards, the girls wanted to try out the fish spa where you put your feet in a tank of small fish which eat the dead skin on your feet and legs. They tried to get me to do it so it would be a whole Hogan High School fish spa bonding experience or something like that. But instead I got Mark, one of the expats from ECP1, to be my proxy. With my jacked up toes I probably would of needed coy fish instead of those small guppies anyways.

I can catch a bus after work on Friday evening and dive here at 8am on Saturday morning.

We were having breakfast at the coffee house opposite our hotel. Kickstart the day with this cup of Milk Tea at the old town white coffee and the kaya toast! I love the kaya toast. Make me think of "Ya kun" toast in Singapore. 好久好久没去了！

 After breakfast, full and happy, we went to mid valley by taking the dunno-what train. Have to change train in between. So first, we took the monrail from imbi to sentral to change to another type of train to mid-valley. I didn’t expect the station to be so dark. I didnt change the lighting mode okie!

Notice how dark and gloomy their stations are! We were on our way to Mid-Valley but was told that the train scheduled to arrive was delayed for thirty minutes. I took this out of boredom.

 虽然那里的治安不是很好，但是那里的乘客还很有自律的噢！一旦公车要来的时候，就会纷纷看到人龙站在月台上等待“地铁”的到来，然后有条有理的上车，完全不像新加坡的横冲直撞。

This is our first time doing fish-spa, haha! The kenko in Singapore charge 10dollars for 10 mins. But in malaysia, you get to enjoy the process at only RM5 for 10 mins. It's a must-do whenever i go there! Shiok ah!

黄金路！

没想到最后一天了，还能够从酒店的电视看到本地的黄金路！

很棒的一个下午经过 central market （偶尔都会去走走，做完banking后），逛着逛着，发现CUTE-FISH-SPA这个陌生的字眼，看着人们把脚放到水里，任由鱼群跟你做SPA，而我又心血来潮，就换了RM5 去泡一泡FISH SPA， 发现当我把脚放进去时，所有鱼群往我这‘肉脚’奔游而来，感觉好像脚麻痹的错觉；很强烈。

来了几个鬼妹也想试一试，可是发现我脚的鱼好像很大只，只好跟老板娘要换位置，去’小鱼’区，怕被‘咬’伤;哈哈。在舒服时，发现十分钟很容易过，只好向老板娘要多10 分钟。哈哈哈 XD。 被‘咬’上瘾的感觉真的很不一样。

当我用tissue把脚擦干时，老外问道‘how’s the feeling？’， 我说到： ‘iciban’。哈哈，好想再被‘咬’喔。。。XD 爽呆了

Just before last Saturday’s French fancies, J and I stopped at one of Singapore’s ubiquitous fish spas.

The concept is simple, and age-old. You stick your feet in a tank full of fish that eat dead skin, and let nature run its freaky pedicuring course.

The skin-feeding behavior fully manifests only under conditions where the food supply is somewhat scarce and unpredictable

So basically, these fish are driven to eating dead foot skin via deprivation, and they deliver pedicures in just the kind of frenzy you would expect.

I have had many an interesting experience, including some foot-related ones (the narration of which is best saved for another forum), and this was far and away the weirdest.

I screamed, squirmed and giggled for the full 15 minute taster. Suffice to say, it tickles.

I look happier than I was

I was helpless in my exclamations, unable to consider the spa setting (plinky-plonk music, muted hues), the shushing of the other fish-fetishists or the thankless man trying to massage my shoulders.

Stubbornness drove me to see out the full quarter hour (a normal session is twice that), but 15 minutes later my feet were all tingly and I wanted to do it again.

Would I though? I don’t think so. I can think of better ways to waste

Sesudahnya kaki akan terasa lebih rileks dan kulit menjadi lebih lembut dan halus. Perawatan ini bisa dijadikan alternatif  selain manicure atau pedicure tradisional lainnya.

Layanan spa untuk perawatan kaki ini sudah banyak terdapat di berbagai negara, sebut saja Jepang, Belanda, China, Korea Selatan, Taiwan, Malaysia (Genting Highland) juga Singapura.
