I really need to start working on content, but I suppose I could easily fill 3 or four days just fucking about looking at stuff and trying to pull it all together. We´ve got time. If we keep moving at this pace we might actually be somewhere by the end of the year.

Relaxing, soothing, and ambient are a few of the many words you could use to describe Koi Pond by The Blimp Pilots. Koi Pond completely transforms your iphone into a peaceful pond with koi swimming around your screen. Features include touch reactive, dynamic water simulation, virtual fish, and many display options.

As far the integration goes, The Blimp Pilots did an amazing job. With it’s easy-to-use interface you won’t have any trouble navigating to the many features this app offers. To use it, simply drag your finger across the screen and watch the water ripple as the koi swim away. While using this app, I actually have fallen asleep before because of nature-like sounds.´

Considering the file size is only 9.4 MB, you could say that this app is really stable. It never lags, freezes, or crashes, so all in all this app does great job with stability.

The features this app comes with are excellent. First of all, it comes with a pretty decent amount of customizations that allow you to change what your koi pond looks like. To customize something, simply tap the bottom right corner of the screen and then the display options pop up. You can customize the color of your water, the amount of koi in the pond, and how many lily pads there are in the pond. You can also change the surface of which the koi are swimming over. Lastly, you can even customize the nature-like sounds playing in the background.

Another feature is that if you shake your iphone, then koi food will appear on your screen and then multiple amounts of koi will swim over to the food.

The Reuse/Replay value of this app is really high. If you’re one of the people who have a hard time falling asleep, this app is probably something you would use a lot. Not only because of the koi pond itself, but because of the ambient sounds in the background. Like I said before, they’re really soothing and calming.

To summarize everything up, if you like ambient applications, I highly recommend you buy this application.

Alright. Alright okay, I am probably going to have this mental image whenever I eat fish again: A li

Alright. Alright okay, I am probably going to have this mental image whenever I eat fish again: A life, breathing fish about a foot long in a plastic bag with a barcode on it, labled live and with a price on it. It’s stomach is cut wide open and red fluid fills the corners of the bag while the fish thrashes around without its guts.

Oh the horror. Watching this happen, along with the horrible disgusting half-cooked fish story I heard from Tra, makes me wonder if fish feel any pain. Therefore I Googled, and research says that Yes, fish do feel pain. Think RICK THE FISH, who I think only Toria knows … tortured and mutilated. Rick is so cute D:

I heard that in fact fish feel pain to a greater extent than humans, but that’s just from one guy who “watched a documentary”. I hope to all fish on Earth that documentary is not real and the guy was just saying it to scare me and on behalf of the fish I will kick his nuts in.

Funnily enough this won’t stop me from eating fish, meat is just too important for my taste buds. I’m just a little monster after all, Lady Gaga was right.

On a completely different note, here’s one for DS fans! Click on the picture to go to the article of Japanese man marrying DS girlfriend.

I guess the game must be very good if you can fall in love with the character. Personally I wouldn’t like to kiss the DS screen it’s icky. I think this guy has it easy, ‘cuz his new wife isn’t going to demand a lot of crap from him. I wonder how much he spent on the wedding though … and I would call him crazy, only he seems to be really happy, and in the end that’s what matters.

This is the letter that he wrote to the journalist who covered the story of his wedding to his virtual GF just in case you didn’t click on it in the main article. I was reading the comments and honestly, some people are just jealous this guy can be happy! Most people who commented were really nice and open-minded, but some motherfuckers need to pull their heads out of their asses.

Oh, and I read this article in the 24 about New Moon and how it degrades the female image and how it conforms to old female stereotypes of a girl having to rely on the guy to save her all the time and aid her mentally, physically and financially and is perfect in almost every way (or so you think).

And then some chick responds to it, and is all like, “Fuck you feminists, I’m a woman and I do whatever I want, and I let my man dominate me if I want (lol) so shut the fuck up. What’s the point of females fighting against females, huh? What does that prove? I think all you feminist are crazy bitches and should stop living. Twilight is a good book and Stephenie Meyer is a genius! I watched the New Moon movie and I loved it! Like, Oh-em-geeeeeeeeeee!” *Flaps hands*

Well, she didn’t say exactly that, and I added a lot of profanities and ridiculousness, but still, that’s basically her point. I just think she’s a Twi-Hard who didn’t like her precious illusions to be destroyed by someone who has some good points. Besides, the woman in the first article didn’t attack shit! She didn’t even mention the author of the book, She Who Must Not Be Named. She wasn’t saying, “You stupid women, why do you like this book?” She was saying, “Bella is a bad role model in this book because etc. etc.” and I’m not a feminist and I think her points are completely valid. Instead, the stupid broad complaining about feminists attacking other women is actually attacking women herself. Feminists are women too you stupid hoe.

Sorry, people like that make me so angry.
And yes, my opinion is partly biased because both the articles surround New Moon (I heard the new movie is actually good and I feel like I’d rather watch another fish thrash around without its guts).

Yeah the crazy dingdong’s name is Tara Hallam, if you want to search it up. She’s too Serious Business for me man.

I actually found someone who blogged about her article and they loved it. I guess I am biased after all HAHA. I bet the chick who really liked it is a fan of Twilight too. (BUT SHE’S IN NANOWRIMO, IF SHE’S A WRITER HOW CAN SHE LIKE BAD WRITING?)

And by the way, I almost finished the crossword yesterday by myself. I’m missing like 24 letters-ish. Nvm, 21. I just looked at it and I figured out another 2 words. HAH. Must get the 24 today and look it up.

Okay, I got to go work on my own (unofficial) NaNoWriMo piece.

Ciao,
WG

On this, the national day of overeating, I thought I would kick off our new featured photo segment with an example of a stuffed gullet from the animal world. For my thesis studying what gopher rockfish eat, I’ve cut open a lot of fish (somewhere in the ballpark of 700, and finally as of this week there are no more fish in my freezer! Woohoo!). Every now and again I’ll see something surprising or out of the ordinary – but none so much as this one.

To give you some perspective, most gopher rockfish stomachs that are empty or have a bit a food are the size of my thumb. The one pictured above was closer to the size of my fist. I’ll put it this way – their stomach lining is some kind of fantastic elastic. What floors me is that this little porker was caught with hook and line, meaning after all that eating, it still went for some bait. But I guess when that pie comes around at the end of tonight, I’ll probably be able to relate.

Just what kind of food does a gopher rockfish pack in at such staggering volumes? Stay tuned to find out!

I didn’t feel that much pressure to get out and run yesterday. At the same time, I wasn’t sure how many opportunities I’d get today and tomorrow, so I decided to take the time and go out. It was a slightly slow 6.7 but felt good to be active for an hour(because I firmly planned on being lazy the other 23). When I got home, I challenged myself to make a lunch not with the microwave. It’s simple enough but there’s so many flavors and textures it just can’t achieve. After planning out a menu, I got to work with my fancy pan I won from some Hood milk promotion last month.

Brussels And Sausage In A Pan

First I scrambled 2 eggs and cooked those in the pan to the perfect doneness–so much easier than in a microwave! Then I steamed raw brussels for 3 minutes in the microwave and then pan-browned them for another 2 minutes. I also heated up a pre-cooked chicken sausage in the microwave(btw, all these uses of it don’t count ) and finished that in the pan.

Scrambled Eggs, Spicy Chicken Sausage, Brussels Sprouts

This deserves a Holy Yum award. Brussels sprouts are seriously my favorite green vegetable and by far the best thing here, even though they were a bit dry, with a touch of salt. The browning gave a good crispness to the outside. The sausage was also quite good. Note: It was real meat and not faux meat. I think I can love them equally. The fennel in it was really impressive. For dessert I had something that took neither pan nor microwave.

Oikos With Banana Pineapple Rum Jam

So perfect. Well, OK, it could have used more jam, but then again my ideal would be eating the jam from the jar with a spoon, which is a no-no when it costs as much as this one does. I had a lovely evening on the couch planned, but then my mom asked if I wanted to accompany her to Market Basket while she picked up some last minute food. My knee-jerk reaction was a big yes, and next thing I knew it I was in the car. Oops. At least I brought a little work with me. For those who don’t have a Market Basket, it’s a place full of interesting finds…

Christmas Decor

Oh, Canada. What are you doing up there? Jk, but Market Basket does have good finds. It’s right across the way from Whole Foods, and while it might only carry about 30% the same stuff, what it does have is very often cheaper. The only thing I could find on my list this trip was a 4-pack of deep chocolate vitatops for 3.69. they had faux meat, but unfortunately nothing all-natural and breakfasty It was pretty late when everyone was done, so I was happy to grab a snack in the car.

Banana Walnut Gnu Bar

Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow. All you have to do is read my review to know I loved this. I don’t like bananas that much, but I swear anything that tastes like bananas I’m game with. And this was just like banana bread. There wasn’t a large presence of walnuts, but that was fine by me since I don’t care for the. And all the fiber filled me up and kept me calm when I realized I still had to make the pie! Yikes. By the time we got home it was dark and I was getting anxious about that, until I remembered this is the simplest recipe and I didn’t even need to check my computer to remember how to make it.

Unbaked Crustless Pumpkin Pie

There was a mini-issue with the pesky water bath, but otherwise crisis averted and sanity restored. I felt a little something was in order along with a pat on the back.

Chocolate Elan Frozen Yogurt

This snack ended up being a little littler than I expected; who knew we were almost out and there was hardly a serving left in the container! Too bad nobody realized this over the past 4 weeks we’ve been having freezer-space issues. Normally I’m happy to finish an ice cream but I love elan and this flavor so much I feel like I need to get an exact replacement for it. I watched 1 of the 2 SNL’s I slept through and then the pie was done.

Crustless Pumpkin Pie

It had a couple bubbles but no cracks and definitely nice and firm so that it will stand on its own at the table. Amen And then there was dinner.

Haddock With Soyaki, Beets, Parsnips With Peach Salsa

Not quite my pan-licious lunch, but this was pretty good, too There was a little more beets taken after the photo and we finished it all! We didn’t want any leftovers going in to Thanksgiving. I swear this house empties of all vegetables when I’m not here so I made sure we got good ones at Market Basket. Parsnips are so good for a soft and white vegetable; I don’t like white potatoes because they always taste dry and starchy but I think I’ve found a new friend in parsnips.

I almost forgot about The Biggest Loser last night! I was so thankful my tivo reminded me of it. I brewed some coffee and had a naked dessert.

Deep Chocolate Vitatop

I kept racking my brain to try and figure out what to do with this vitatop. It finally occurred to me: If it wasn’t coming naturally, it wasn’t meant to be. And this vitatop tasted just delicious on its own. It was great to see where former contestants are and to know they’ve really changed their lives. I think finding and staying with that balance must be the toughest thing. There was another snack.

Oikos With Turbinado Sugar And Chocolate Chips

Turbinado sugar is good for you because it has the minerals crystalized in, right? And it’s from Trader Joe’s so it cures cancer, right? We’re just going to go with all of that because this hit my sweet tooth. It was so depressing seeing the winner who gained back so much weight. Clearly, though, he felt bad about it, too, so it’s hard to be upset with him.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple And Chocolate Sunflower Seed Butter

Let’s just say, this bowl took a lot of work to figure out what to do with it, but I’m happy where I settled. I forgot how good and chocolatey(not to mention thick) the chocolate sunflower butter is. And probably a better choice at 10:30 than chocolate chips with my sugar tolerance(or lack thereof).

I set my alarm for 7 this morning. On a holiday–why’d I do that? To run, of course. I wasn’t sure it was going to happen but it was actually reasonably warm and I felt refreshed with only 8 hours of sleep. I grabbed a bar for the run.

Amazing Grass Chocolate Whole Food Energy Bar

What a delicious way to start Thanksgiving I ate 3/5ths of it on the run and then never needing the last bit. I ended up doing 10.55 miles–my longest run outside! The course was completely new to me; they demolished a bridge near my house which pretty much eliminated as options all my longer runs but I figured out a new course that worked perfectly. I came home to a house already smelling of food–love that. I got a touch creative with breakfast:

Pumpkin Yogurt With Smart Balance Peanut Butter And Nog Cream Cheese Frosting, Peanut Oikos

Ok, I’ll admit it, I used the microwave for the oats and I don’t regret it because this bowl was perfect. The frosting, which I dreamed up on the run, really made it; the recipe is 1oz greek yogurt, 1 tablespoon low fat cream cheese, and 1 tablespoon Silk Nog with 3 drops vanilla liquid stevia. I wouldn’t give such precise measurements if I weren’t convinced those are the measurements of the Greek Gods. It’s sweet but not so much that you lose the cream cheese, and it’s entirely seasonal.

Happy Thanksgiving, all! Now I’m kicking back, watching The Parade with Pikachu just having floated by. My relatives are coming in just 2 hours! I’m so excited, even though I realize the 2 little cousins will probably have me tearing my hair out of my head by the end of the day, haha.

NuNaturals giveaway! I think they’re stevia taste the purest(and this is coming from someone who, from time to time, nibbles on his plant).

“Sir, I think you booked the wrong tickets.”

Without a shadow of a doubt, this goes down as one of my biggest boo-boos. I couldn’t believe that I committed a mistake of this simplicity. The crazy thing about it was that none of the four people I had sent my itinerary to spotted it as well. The dates on my E-ticket read 28 Nov Fri to 28 Dec Mon (!!! – I know). On hindsight, thank God there was no promotional fare this time – the more expensive flexi-saver ticket I purchased allowed for a n0-fee flight change.

To help you understand the severity of the situation, on the line was 40kg of fish meat, a $919 SQ air ticket and another $90 paid for excess baggage. It was midnight and my sister (who kindly sent me to the airport) had already reached home. The current flight was fully booked and so were the next two flights at 7am and 10am. The frozen fish meat only had a lifespan of 10 hours without refrigeration.

To say I was panicking is an understatement. But a part of me really enjoyed the impending adventure. Suddenly I was captured in a cinematic moment. Strangely, I was at peace but also in a flurry.

Check-in for the flight closes at 12:35am. The plane takes off at 1:15am.

T-30 minutes @ 12:05am:
After confirming this major mistake, the check-in officer informed me that 12 people have not turned up for this flight. And there were already two passengers on the waiting list. I was third on the list. If nine passengers turned up, it’d be game over for Joey. My uncle and I dismissed paying for Business Class (DANG!) and were hoping for the no-show of these 12 people.

T-20 minutes @ 12:15am:
After putting down the phone with HY for the third time – I needed an anxiety-venting outlet – I was informed by the same officer that there were only 5 seats left. Calmly, he said, “Sir, maybe this is your lucky day”.

His colleague added, “But honestly Sir, based on my experience, I think your chances are really low.”

T-10 minutes @ 12:25am:
I told HY that I couldn’t be on the phone anymore because I was in such a state of peaceful flurry (!). I hung up, looked towards the counter and established eye contact with the same officer. He didn’t give me a thumbs up, but gestured “3” instead. I remembered the two already on the waiting list and my negotiations with God reached a new level of extraordinary wagers. I think I must have really tickled God.

D-day H-hour @ 12:35am:
“Sir, please proceed to the opposite counter to pay for your excess baggage after you check-in. Please watch your time as the gate closes at 1:05am. Have a good flight.”

This was the first time I was the last person on the plane. And this miracle really made me look forward to my short 3-day 2-night hiatus in Shanghai.

Tomorrow, find out why I got zero rest on the plane in Shanghai Tan Part 2 – Sleepless on SQ.

So yes, my long suffering fans… I have returned, perhaps 5 kilograms heavier than when I left, with an immeasurable desire for ostrich biltong, and a nice tan.

The holiday to South Africa rocked. We got to do some familial bonding time, and a fair amount of time got spent with the friends. Mr & Mrs B… many thanks for the awesome trip to Knysna and back… much obliged. Now come and visit us so we can return the favour. Wooz and SPF… it was great to be able to spend so much time with you guys… thanks for taking the leave and making it all possible.
So. This Blog has been built up by three weeks absence, and is bound to be a little longer than normal. As usual, if you want to skip the personal stuff, jump ahead to the line of asterisks at the end of this piece.

South Africa. Well well. It was an absolutely awesome trip. One of my favourite things to do in the whole world is to get a car that I like driving and then to take a long road trip. And the wife and I got to do just that with her family. The four of us piled into their car and drove off on what worked out to be an insanely expensive, but very enjoyable experience. And my god did we shop. Everything from Chutney to Cuckoo Clocks went into that car.

Let’s see, first stop was the Willows in Port Elizabeth. This was a classic little caravan/chalet place, and we got a two-bedroomed chalet for the four of us. Very comfortable, very clean and so close to the sea that even my youngest students could throw a stone into the water from the living room. We were there for two nights… and used the time soaking up some much-needed shopping. And thus began my fixation with finding the perfect pie on the holiday. See… the wife and I recently stopped being vegetarian and started eating seafood. Well… poultry has been added to the pile of edibles now… meaning that Chicken was back on the menu. (For the record, we still don’t eat mammals…. which means that yes, TURKEY is back on the menu for Christmas.) With chicken scratching at the doormat, I started in on Chicken Pies.

Woolworths to the rescue. AWESOME chicken and mushroom pie. Try it. Very good.

An aside – If it feels as if all the wife and I did on this holiday was sleep and eat, well… we feel that way too. It was a great holiday.

After PE, we drove on to Sedgefield…. chosen because it was nice and close to Knysna, which was where our friends Stompie and Jax were getting married. Yes… we did it all on this trip, weddings included. The place in Sedgefield was fantastic, the view was simply unbeatable.

Stompie and Jax threw themselves a Euro-funded Afro-ethnic wedding. And it was really a great evening. Good to be able to catch up with them again, as we hadn’t seen them since leaving Ireland. The wedding itself was out-standing and if their friends are anything to go by, they’ll be blessed in the future.

After the wedding it was a case of doing some family time in and around Knysna and George. We took in the sights of Hoekwil and Wilderness, the former very rustic, the latter full of sea spray.
Much seafood was eaten. Much chicken was eaten.

One of the highlights for the wife and I of the Sedgefield trip was a visit to the Wild Oats Farmer’s market… where local farmers sold their wares. (Mainly foodstuffs, but some raw produce too.) We got to soak up a little culture…

It was here that I found the undisputed BEST chicken pie in South Africa. The Steam Whistle Stop Pie company, operating out of god-knows where, but with a stand at the market.

After Sedgefield, there remained only the trip back to East London, which took much longer than expected. This is because of a little known family problem. Fact: If you place two women with disposable income in the back seat of a car, they will hatch plans to visit as many farm stalls as possible on the way back home. This is in a misguided effort to fill the car with very fattening farm foodstuffs and home produce. Thus, some 600 kilometres, 23 pieces of fudge, a half-dozen bottles of chutney, three full wheels of cheese, and 39 farm stalls later….. the entire Western Cape was denuded of produce, the car was groaning on its springs and we got home. To a huge dinner cooked by my sister in law.

The rest of the trip was spent with friends and family. I got to get in a fair amount of roleplaying with Wooz and the bunch, and even GMed a demo session for Jebb and his bunch. An obnoxiously large amount of time was spent virtually supine on Wooz’ patio drinking coffee… which is the perfect way to conduct oneself on holiday. Besides, the view from there isn’t half bad either.

Three weeks flew by with absolutely no regard for how much it cost us to get there, or indeed just how long 14 hours in economy class feels. (Particularly when you are bloated on fudge and chicken pies.)
There were tears, there were hugs and then we were gone.

To everyone who made the effort, thanks a hell of a lot guys, it was a vastly enjoyable experience.

************

And let’s get on with the jokes and stuff shall we?

The Truth About College:

College is a bunch of rooms where you sit for 2,000 hours or so and
try to memorize things. The 2,000 hours are spread out over four
years. You spend the rest of the time sleeping, partying, and trying to
get dates.

Basically, you learn two kinds of things in college:

    1. Things you will need to know in later life (two hours). 2. Things you
will not need to know in later life (1,998 hours).

The latter are the things you learn in classes whose names end in
-ology, -osophy, -istry, -ics, and so on. The idea is you memorize
these things, then write them down in little exam books, then forget
them. If you fail to forget them, you become a professor and have to stay
in college for the rest of your life.

After you’ve been in college for a year or so, you’re supposed to
choose a major, which is the subject you intend to memorize and
forget the most things about. Here is a very important piece of
advice: Be sure to choose a major that does not involve Known Facts
and Right Answers. This means you must not major in mathematics,
physics, biology, chemistry, or geology because these subjects
involve actual facts.

If, for example, you major in mathematics, you’re going to wander
into class one day and the professor will say: “Define the cosine
integer of the quadrant of a rhomboid binary axis, and extrapolate
your result to five significant vertices.” If you don’t come up with
exactly the answer the professor has in mind, you fail.

The same is true of chemistry: If you write in your exam book that
carbon and hydrogen combine to form oak, your professor will flunk
you. He wants you to come up with the same answer he and all the
other chemists have agreed on. Scientists are extremely snotty about
this.

So you should major in subjects like English, philosophy, psychology, and
sociology – subjects in which nobody really understands what anybody else
is talking about, and which involve virtually no actual facts.

I attended classes in all these subjects, so I’ll give you a quick
overview of each:

ENGLISH: This involves writing papers about long books you have read
little snippets of just before class. Here is a tip on how to get good
grades on your English papers: Never say anything about a book that
anybody with any common sense would say. For example, suppose you are
studying Moby Dick. Anybody with any common sense would say Moby Dick is
a big white whale, since the characters in the book refer to it as a big
white whale roughly 11,000 times. So in your paper, you say Moby Dick is
actually the Republic of Ireland. Your professor, who is sick to death of
reading papers and never liked Moby Dick anyway, will think you are
enormously creative. If you can regularly come up with lunatic
interpretations of simple stories, you should major in English.

PHILOSOPHY: Basically, this involves sitting in a room and deciding
there is no such thing as reality and then going to lunch. You should
major in philosophy if you plan to take a lot of drugs.

PSYCHOLOGY: This involves talking about rats and dreams.
Psychologists are obsessed with rats and dreams. I once spent an
entire semester training a rat to punch little buttons in a certain
sequence, then training my roommate to do the same thing. The rat
learned much faster. My roommate is now a doctor. If you like rats or
dreams, and above all if you dream about rats, you should major in
psychology.

SOCIOLOGY: For sheer lack of intelligibility, sociology is far and
away the number one subject. I sat through hundreds of hours of
sociology courses, and read gobs of sociology writing, and I never
once heard or read a coherent statement. This is because sociologists
want to be considered scientists, so they spend most of their time
translating simple, obvious observations into scientific-sounding code.
If you plan to major in sociology, you’ll have to learn to do the same
thing. For example, suppose you have observed that children cry when they
fall down. You should write: “Methodological observation of the
sociometrical behavior tendencies of prematurated isolates indicates that
a causal relationship exists between groundward tropism and lachrimatory
behavior forms.” If you can keep this up for 50 or 60 pages, you will get
a large government grant.

This weeks musical talent comes to you from the talented Ms. Nina Simone. This one is called Strange Fruit. And if it is depressing, well, it is meant to be. Give yourself a search for the lyrics. Sometimes, I am sad to be a human.

And that is that.. .. if there appears to be a lack of linkage in this blog, sorry… but 3 weeks without internet means that I didn’t find as many interesting things. Next time. K?

(serves 2) You will need : - Fish fillets (can be frozen, but fresh is worth it - 1 egg, beaten

(serves 2)

You will need :
- Fish fillets (can be frozen, but fresh is worth it
- 1 egg, beaten – 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp paprika powder - handful flour

Fire up your BBQ and sit back with a beer or glass of wine until the embers are glowing and there are no flames. Meanwhile, tear off two pieces of foil that when doubled-back on themselves form a square. Lightly oil one side of each square. Then mix the paprika with the breadcrumbs and spread on to a plate. Lay out the flour on another plate.

Roll each piece of fish in the flour and then dip in the egg. Then roll each piece of fish in the breadrumbs so that they are nicely covered. Lay in the foil on the greased side and then fold the foil into parcels.

Lay the parcels on a grill above the ‘coal embers and cook for 6-7 minutes before turning and cooking for a further 6-7 minutes.

When cooked the fish will be golden.

Alternatives

You will need :
- Fish fillets (can be frozen, but fresh is worth it
- 1 egg, beaten – 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

- 1 can ale – juice of half a lemon

- 1 tsp paprika powder - 150g plain flour

Fire up your BBQ and sit back with a beer or glass of wine until the embers are glowing and there are no flames. Meanwhile (if you’re not frying the fish), tear off two pieces of foil that when doubled-back on themselves form a square. Lightly oil one side of each square. Lay out the flour on another plate, and whisk the flour and ale into a batter, keeping the bubbles.

Roll each piece of fish in the flour and then dip in the batter.

If you’re shallow frying, get the oil simmering in a pan well clear of any flames and then cook the fish until golden.

If you’re cooking in foil wraps, lay each battered piece of fish in the foil on the greased side and then fold the foil into parcels. Lay the parcels on a grill above the ‘coal embers and cook for 6-7 minutes before turning and cooking for a further 6-7 minutes. When cooked the fish will be golden.

Excerpts from GLOBAL WARMING IS A MYTH IS CARBON DI OXIDE THE VILLAIN? Such terms as carbon credit

Excerpts from GLOBAL WARMING IS A MYTH

IS CARBON DI OXIDE THE VILLAIN?

Such terms as carbon credit find a place in newspapers almost daily. I don’t know what is all this about. To me CO2 sustains life on earth. Has the level of CO2 in the atmosphere gone up? Has it been proved experimentally?

Before Industrialization

The whole of America and most of the old world were inhabited by a comparatively small population, a majority of whom depended upon meat and fish. Farming depended entirely on rain water as big dams were unknown. The grasslands of America and Australia didn’t produce food grains. Coal and other fossil fuels were not commercially exploited. In those days we may presume that a proper balance existed between CO2 and other ingredients of the air like N2 and O2 in spite of forest fires, the like of which we witnessed in California recently.

After Industrialization

Commercial exploitation of coal began first followed by oil and natural gas, resulting in increase in the level of CO2 in the atmosphere. Simultaneously two other developments followed: increase in population (both human and animal) and corresponding growth in food grains production. Big dams were constructed and more and more areas of land were brought under cultivation. Mechanization and the use of artificial fertilizers made leaps and bounds in production of food grains, fruits and other commercial crops. The Prairies of North America became the granary of the world. Compared to grass, food grains and sugar fix a large quantity of CO2. The major items responsible for such CO2 fixation are:

food grains like wheat, corn, rice, oats, soybean etc

underground vegetables like potato, tapioca, beetroot etc

fruits like apple, grapes, banana, dates, cherry, pineapple etc

sugarcane etc

Experts can calculate the total quantity of CO2 produced by industry and that absorbed by vegetation as mentioned above and the marine vegetation in order to find out whether the net balance is favoring CO2 concentration in the air. An easier way would be to experimentally ascertain the percentage of CO2 in the atmospheric air (being heavier than air CO2 is available near the surface of the earth). If CO2 level increases O2 level should decrease. In my childhood (I am 70+) O2 level was 20% as mentioned in my text book. Has it changed? An atom of carbon combines with two atoms of oxygen to form CO2 which is absorbed by the leaves of the plant to form starch. In the process two atoms of oxygen are released into the atmosphere. We may say that each carbon atom burnt ultimately results in the release of two atoms of oxygen, thus resulting in increase in the level of O2. Level of CO2 dissolved in the ocean water should also be checked. If this level increases, fishes would die en mass. Has this happened? If the level of CO2 dissolved in ocean waters decreases, plant life in the ocean cannot produce enough starch by photosynthesis. This will be a hazard for fishes and other marine life.

The volume of animal and hence plant life in the oceans is much more than that on the continents. This is because the area of the oceans is seven times the area of the continents. Also, the oceans are deep. Hence the volume of water is very much more and can contain a large population of marine life. The necessary starch has to come from plant life. So, the total bio mass in the oceans is considerably higher than that in the continent. The carbon di oxideàPlant starchàAnimalsàCarbon di oxide cycle is there in the watery medium, just as in our atmosphere. All the gases, including nitrogen, will be present in dissolved state in the oceans too. Here industrialization has not affected the ‘atmosphere’ of the ocean. This fact has to be recognized in any discussion on Global Warming.

[The percentage of various components of atmospheric air as obtained from the websites is given below:

Nitrogen 78.1

Oxygen 20.9

Argon 0.9

Neon 0.002

Helium 0.0005

Krypton 0.0001

Hydrogen 0.00005

Carbon di oxide 0.035!!!!!!!! (Poor, innocent CO2 has been maligned unnecessarily)

Methane 0.0002

Ozone 0.000004

This would suggest that the percentage of oxygen has slightly increased. If this is true it augers ill, as forest fires may become uncontrollable with increase in the level of oxygen in the coming years. Therefore, this line should be investigated separately by experts. My guess is that with unchecked use of nitrogenous fertilizers, the total bio mass in the earth could have increased. The requisite extra nitrogen must have been drawn from the atmosphere along with CO2 releasing extra oxygen into the atmosphere as pointed out above.]

The importance of proper scientific study cannot be over emphasized. Mother Nature maintains her balance, whatever her children may do!

First of all, I would like to wish everyone back in the States [and indeed, Americans all over the w

First of all, I would like to wish everyone back in the States [and indeed, Americans all over the world] a happy Thanksgiving. In order to commemorate the occasion, this post will be about eating in Japan. I should get this out of the way: I did not do anything special for Thanksgiving this year. In fact, I ate less than I do on an average day. I was invited to a pizza party with my program, but I was still pretty sick and honestly speaking…Japanese Domino’s is a pretty depressing substitute for what I was missing back in Connecticut. Then again, the study abroad experience isn’t only about the things you do; I’ve found the greatest differences lie in what you don’t do.

I’m having trouble coming up with how to describe Japanese food. When I describe American food to my host parents, I begin by explaining that we very rarely eat burgers at home. So perhaps I should start by saying this: I have never had sushi at my homestay. Not once. What do we eat, then? Breakfast is pretty consistent.

One egg, either scrambled or hardboiled

A bunch of lettuce [no dressing]

A thick piece of toast

Some sort of cold meat [usually ham or sausage]

Black coffee

Half a tomato

Some fruit [usually apple or pear]

A shot-sized yogurt drink

It all fits on a normally-sized plate and a separate plate for the toast, but I can’t really wolf it. We eat together while watching the news, and it usually takes between twenty and thirty minutes. At first, I had a tough time with some of the stuff because it didn’t feel like ‘morning food’ to me.

I can’t tell you a thing about lunch because I don’t eat lunch with my family. Instead, I’ll talk about what I do for lunch! There are plenty of options for eating on your own. Japanese – style fast food places like Matsuya, Yoshinoya or C&C Curry Shop are everywhere. They’re all tiny lunch counter places with ticket ordering. There’s a vending machine at the door that prints tickets to be exchanged for food. It’s great, because on a grumpy kind of day, you don’t need to say a word to your server. Curry is big here, and it’s become one of my favorites. Japanese curry places are everywhere and you can get a big plate of curry and rice for about $5. If you’re on more of a budget, you can go to the convenience store and buy any sort of meal you like. They have sandwiches, onigiri [rice balls with some sort of meat or veggie filling] or microwave lunchboxes that they will nuke for you right there. These things are all a couple bucks. Here’s an ad for the fast food place, Yoshinoya. Recognize him?

Dinner is where things start to get interesting. Here is where dinner begins: a bowl of white rice, miso soup and maybe some pickled vegetables. From there, we have endless possibilities. A lot of the dinners I have with my family involve a plate in front of me with a whole baked fish on it. I mean like fins, skin, tail, head…all of it. They’re pretty tricky to eat, especially with the teeny bones. I’m pretty confident that in the past two months, I’ve eaten more fish than I did in the previous 19 years. Last night, my miso soup was full of about a hundred tiny mussels, in-shell. That took FOREVER to eat, and I am sponsored with chopsticks. The food is amazing, though. Sometimes my host mother bakes enormous shrimp or cooks whole crabs and we just go at it. And while there isn’t sushi, there is a lot of sashimi, which is just raw fish slices by themselves. I’ve become quite partial to tuna in sashimi form, even though I can’t stand canned tuna. I just can’t see why the West would do something like that to such a delicious fish!

My host mother has a sweet tooth, so every night over after dinner tea, we have a sweet of some sort. She likes Japanese sweets [wakashi], which usually involve fruit, chestnuts or sweet red bean paste. Not bad.

Finally, I’d like to share one of my favorite videos, the sushi installment of the “Japanese Tradition” series. This is a set of videos made by a Japanese director, all poking fun at Japanese customs and exaggerating them ridiculously. I can safely say that not a thing in this video is true, but I hope you enjoy it.

This topic was suggested by my aunt Deborah, and she suggested a few others. I had some ideas of my own, but I’ll do them in the order you want! What would you all like to hear about next?

So, I wrote the other day that I felt like Julia Child and that was because I was making a simple fish dish. I had seen the Barefoot Contessa making Sole Meuniere as she talked about her visit to Paris. She spoke of how simple and delicious the preparation was. I then read about how Julia Child had Sole Meuniere and that this meal was what made her fall in love with French Cooking. Here is what she said about that experience in My Life in France.

It arrived whole: a large, flat Dover sole that was perfectly browned in a sputtering butter sauce with a sprinkling of chopped parsley on top. The waiter carefully placed the platter in front of us, stepped back, and said: “Bon appètit!

I closed my eyes and inhaled the rising perfume. Then I lifted a forkful of fish to my mouth, took a bite, and chewed slowly. The flesh of the sole was delicate, with a light but distinct taste of the ocean that blended marvelously with the browned butter. I chewed slowly and swallowed. It was a morsel of perfection.

I however can not find sole but figured that tilapia was pretty close and probably cheaper too. This is of course my untrained, American opinion. A trained French chef might disagree. I had some fillets so off I went to try a simple preparation. This dish is French and is a bit heavy in the butter department but is luxurious. I can honestly picture myself sitting in Paris or Disneyworld (thats the closest I’ve been so far) eating this dish and being happy to pay for it. Hope you will try this dish.

8 pieces of tilapia fillet, patted dry with a paper towel this will make the coating stick better. (I made extra for a leftover meal)

6 TBSP butter, divided

1 cup of flour

salt and pepper

2 tsp lime or lemon juice

Using large skillet, melt 3 TBSP butter over medium heat.

Season flour with salt and pepper and stir to combine.

Place each fish fillet in the flour making sure to press the fish to get a good coat on both sides.

Place fish fillets in melted butter and cook for 2 minutes on first side then flip. Cook 2 to 3 minutes on second side depending on thickness. I cooked 2 fillets at a time.

Remove fish to plate and add two more fillets and cook to above directions.

Remove second set of fillets and add a tsp of lime juice to the pan. Using your spatula scrape the bits that have stuck to the bottom and pour the brown butter sauce over the fillets.

Repeat process with the next 4 fillets. Enjoy the decadence. You can also sprinkle some parsley over the fish for a more traditional flavor.

I served mine with cauliflower in cheese sauce and steamed mussels.

I can understand that if I were served this dish in Paris that I might feel the same as Julia. In complete awe.

It explains all of these different techniques that work together so you can make anywhere from 100-400 gold per hour. That makes things a lot easier and I already got some items that I thought I would get a month later. The World of Warcraft secrets really do point out the obvious and easy ways to make gold quick and fast. It works very well and is easy to use.

It is also a much better alternative than buying gold from WoW gold sellers. It makes collecting WoW gold fast and for a cheap price. Once you read and understand the guide you will learn that the strategies are just legal in-game strategies so you can’t get banned for taking tips from this guide. The creator of the guide did exactly what he wanted to do by not putting up filler and only quality secrets for fast gold making. It also comes with a 8 week guarantee just in-case you change your mind (The guide is an e-book).

The 7 bonuses that come with the guide really do open up even more ways to earn World of Warcraft gold. I was amazed after thinking that they were just the same thing over or nothing new. I thought I knew what I was doing in the auction house, but boy was I wrong. There is also the fishing guide that really boosted up my gold that I didn’t even know the fishing is a good way of making gold. This World of Warcraft guide really helps, so if you would like to get a lot more WoW gold try it out. If you do end up going to the page and buying it for $37, you can go ahead and skip much of what he says. Everything here should tell you enough of generally what you are going to get.
