I found out about this Fisher Price Newborn to Toddler rocker through a Fisher Price catalogue and was lucky enough to find it at our local Babies R Us.  This rocker is fabulous, I would give it a 4/5.  The colours are fun but not too bright and suit both girls and boys.  It does require assembly, which is not overly difficult at all.  There are three toys for your munchkin to enjoy two that are showing on the overhang arm and one that is inserted onto the side which is a bird rattle.  The other two toys of are a cat and dog one has bells inside that make noise when shaken and the other plays a nursery rhyme when shaken.  The head of the rocker is very easy to raise or drop, depending on if your baby is asleep or awake.  It also has a vibrator that is great if your child is a bit gassy.  The best part of this rocker is that is very comfortable and I am okay with my munchkin taking his daytime naps in it, in fact he loves napping in the rocker.  The rocker bottom also has feet that can be very easily put in place to prevent any movement.  The safety belt is very comfortable and easy to use as well.  I am looking forward to transforming the rocker to the toddler rocker as show below.

The one aspect that I do think could use some improvement is the portability.  It is very, very easy to fold down but I often have to carry the rocker up and down a flight of 13 stairs and with the toy arm attached it makes it a bit difficult to do. 

Other than that, I am advising everyone to go and get one if you have a baby, I think it is a great investment and will last a long time.

Before plopping Baby V into a highchair when we dine out of home, I would wipe (more like scrub) the seat thoroughly with a wet wipe. However, there are occasions when being armed with wet wipes is not enough:

• One Japanese restaurant had ONLY 2 highchairs when there are 3 children in our dining group
• One eatery had many highchairs, which were full of RUST (I didn’t even want to touch them!)
• One restaurant had highchairs without straps (Baby V was constantly turning his entire body around and I was paranoid that he’d fall out of it any moment.)

To prepare ourselves for the many dining out occasions ahead, we shopped around for a portable booster seat and decided on the Fisher-Price Healthy Care™ Deluxe Booster Seat (bought at Chubby Chubby, listed price RM199). It was easy to assemble out of the box and the simple rounded edges mean easy cleaning. I like that the tray comes with a cover to keep the surface clean, and it is adjustable to accommodate bigger tummies as the child grows. The height of the seat is adjustable as well.

We keep the portable seat in the car and have used it twice at neighbourhood eateries. One of the straps dual-functions as a shoulder strap to carry the seat around. It took only a short while to secure the seat onto an adult chair. Once Baby V is in the booster seat and secured with a three-point harness, I can enjoy my meal in peace knowing that he is in a safe and clean chair.

An improvement that the seat needs is the way the tray is clipped onto it when it is to be carried via the shoulder strap. The tray clips on rather loosely and may fall out easily. Otherwise, we are rather satisfied users of this booster seat.

Pros:

• Adjustable options allow the chair to ‘grow’ with the child
• Easy to use outdoors
• Easy to clean
• Shoulder strap makes it convenient to carry about

Cons:

• When carrying the seat, be careful as the tray may fall out

I got to catch a lot of tv this holiday weekend–and started to see the waves of toy tv commercials. Some reminded me of toys that did not win awards from us…and that we needed to post more reviews!!

When we first saw TRIO at toy fair we were all excited.  We love open-ended building sets and really get psyched when a large toy company gets behind a new system–making the access to it more affordable.  Unfortunately TRIO did not fare well with our testers.  The product is marked for kids 3 and up – so we enlisted one of our hard core DUPLO builders–thinking this would be the most likely audience.  He had the same trouble we did manipulating the pieces. Unlike DUPLO, it’s hard to pull the pieces apart.  We then tried them with a four year old builder–and had the same reaction.  We hope the folks at Fisher-Price work on the “pull” factor.  The pieces are pleasing–but too frustrating for the intended audience. Our recommendation is to stick with a basic DUPLO bucket at this age.

Image editing is carried out using Gimp and Photos are managed using F-spot. Instead of having to hunt for all of these in Ubuntu netbook remix, they are presented on the initial screen when you log on.

When you go to shut the computer down or log off there is a button on the screen towards the bottom right of the screen. You will find this is different to the standard Ubuntu log-off that is in the top right next to the date and time. This may put off some people who already Ubuntu on their ordinary machine.

Various pieces of information can be seen across the top of the page including the date and time, the status of any network connection and if Skype is connected. It is different and it will take a little while to work around the options on the screen before you know what everything means.

All in all this should be welcome to introduce new users to the world of Ubuntu Linux.

It’s the end of Black Friday. From corporate America’s perspective, this means today was the biggest shopping day of the year, offering retailers a chance to jump from a deficit (red) to a profit (black). From a parent’s perspective, however, Black Friday means the opposite: bankrolling Santa’s shopping spree will send my VISA card into a one-month hemorrhage; I’ll still be taking care of the oozing debt when the $10 batteries die for the fifth time.

Let me get this Christmas shopping thing straight: I have to buy my kids a present from Santa for a staff Christmas party, another present from Santa for the actual day, stocking stuffers from Santa, and a present from their dad and me. My VISA and I are seeing red. As in red like Santa.

It wouldn’t be so bad if I could find quality toys that were affordable. But one look at this year’s list of Best Toys of 2009 reveals that Santa’s quality control experts were on a twelve month coffee break.

Here Are the Top 5 Toys of 2009 That Really Suck:

1. Fisher Price Smart Cycle Extreme. Okay, instead of taking your kids for a run around the park, going sledding, or playing a game of soccer, you can sit them in front of a DVD on an exercise bike and count their calories while you drink a latte. Now I’m all for preoccupying my kids while I do something else (like write this post), but an exercise bike for kids is clearly a sign of the apocalypse. What next, the mini-Martini mixer? Rumour has it that before the corporate bigwigs named it the Smart Cycle Extreme, they contemplated calling it the Junior Couch Potato.
2. Elmo Tickle Hands. There’s a reason why Elmo wasn’t on the original Sesame Street. He’s annoying, as androgynous-squealing-fur-balls tend to be. This year you get the opportunity to pay the same amount as a full-size Elmo and receive only the hands. Plus, one of the hands is made of cloth, meaning you actually have to make the sound effects yourself. And the price? Ouch, that tickles.

3. Dora Links Doll. I actually like Dora. She’s decidedly anti-Barbie: she’s not blue-eyed or pasty-looking, nor is she Twiggy with boobs. But the Dora Links Doll looks like Dora’s befriended Jenny Craig, and that pisses me off. I can hear the explanations that parents will be forced to offer: “Yes, honey, the real Dora was too fat.” Add to that the fact you can change her eyes to blue and I’m definitely seeing red on Black Friday.
4. Crocodile Dentist. This game has been around since 1991, but some best-toy-websites have listed it as a  “classic” in recent years. Crocodile Dentist gives kids the chance to extract a tooth from a croc’s mouth; choose carefully, because if you select the wrong one the nasty reptile will bite you. It’s like the Hungry Hungry Hippos meet Operation. The reviews on amazon.com say it all: “a great drinking game,” “it bites pretty hard,” “contains choking parts,” and “we’re on our third one.” And those are the positive comments.
5. Barbie Twilight (Bella and Edward dolls). Let’s face it, if I’m going to buy an Edward doll, it’s going to be life sized. Enough said.

Earlier this month, a massive stroller recall had parents worried about pinching fingers and anxious to get a repair kit. But now the risk of suffocation has another company recalling millions of cribs in the largest crib recall in the U.S. – and you may need another kit.

Stork Craft Manufacturing along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including some with a Fisher-Price logo. These cribs have a side that moves up and down making it easier for parents to lift children from the crib. But when pieces break or are assembled incorrectly, drop-down sides can become dangerous. In fact, there have been 110 incidents of drop-side detachment resulting in injury, children falling or becoming trapped, and in some cases suffocation.

The CPSC says to stop using the recalled crib immediately and contact Stork Craft for a free repair kit that converts the drop-side into a fixed side.

This is what urged the U.S. & Canada to do the biggest crib recall in North American history. After 110 reports of incidents and four infants dying from suffocation, more than 2.1 million drop-side cribs made by Stork Craft Manufacturing,sold from 1993 through October of this year (some 150,000 of them have the Fisher-Price logo) are being recalled. In Canada, they were sold through Sears and Wal-Mart. Yesterday, 2 models, Holly and Lily were still being sold.

The Stork Craft cribs have had hardware problems, and there can also be assembly mistakes by the crib owner, both of which can cause the drop-side to detach, creating a dangerous space between the side and the mattress where an infant can become trapped.

Consumer advocates have complained for years about drop-side cribs, and more than five million of them have been recalled over the past two years alone, so it is not a matter to take lightly. It is said that these drop-sides will be banned in the future.
