My wife surprised me by giving me the 1005HA netbook for an early Christmas gift. It surprised me because I have never had so much as a laptop in my life! However, my wife knew how badly I needed a portable computer when I am traveling with my job. I have used the “mini” computer during my last 2 business trips, and I am ready now to provide some feedback.

My first impression of the Asus 1005HA came in 2 parts. Initially I thought to myself,” my gosh this thing is TINY!”It is hard to believe that it weighs barely 3 lbs!Of course, that’s great news for bringing it on planes. I can stuff it in just about any carry on.

My second reaction was, “Holy Cow, this little machine is gorgeous!”True enough. It is easy why they call it the “seashell model.” It really does remind you of a seashell. It has that deep pearl like finish. I get compliments on it all the time.

When I first got the Asus 1005HA, I had 2 concerns. My first concern was the screen size. I mean, for crying out loud, it is only 10.1 inches! I was, however, amazed at how “viewable” the screen is. It is back lit nicely, with good resolution.

Also, the screen is very visible and easy to read in all kinds of lighting, including bright sunshine. It is also quite viewable at a variety of angles.

My second concern was the keyboard. I am a definite candidate for the world’s worst typist award, and a tiny keyboard would just make my plight worse. However, at first glance the keyboard did not appear all that tiny! In fact, even I can type comfortably on the keyboard,(one finger at a time, of course).

They say it is 92% of the size of a standard laptop keyboard, so I guess I’ll take their word on that.

So, all in all, my first “mini” computer has been a pleasure to use. It has provided convenience for me when I travel, and even as I use it in different parts of my house. I can only say,”thank you Asus, for the 1005HA!”

October 10th approximately 8pm, I was leaving the woods after an unsuccessful night of hunting in Ho

October 10th approximately 8pm, I was leaving the woods after an unsuccessful night of hunting in Hood County. I had to make a decision; spend another night at camp or pack-up and drive home to make sure I made my soccer game on Sunday (we lost). I decided to pack up and go surprise the girlfriend back home, and allow myself some more sleep in the morning, but don’t let her know!

I arrived home around 1am after a long drive, which I always enjoy.

Getting side tracked, I must say I am a big fan of the Columbia River Gorge & Hood River County commissioners for there efforts and protections to keep both the Gorge & Hood River County such a beautiful and recreation filled place. Oregon & the rest of our country could take a page from there book on Urban Growth Boundaries.

Ok, sorry, getting back to the story!

I’m not one bit tired and lucky for me she wakes up the same. So I hopped into bed and grabbed Oregon Dept of Fish & Wildlife Conservation Strategy. Project Wilderness had already began plans to submit habitat restoration/biodiversity improvement in Hood River County, so I figured it would be a good chance to review the guide and see what animal and plant species we could assist with the project. The first page of the species table the fisher catches my eye. At that point I held no knowledge of the animal (oh how that has changed), but something about it stuck with me. I made notation to do further research at another time, it’s listed outside the area we’re working. As I turn the page, there is a short description and history of the fisher in Oregon. This only further intrigues me.

Historically the fisher inhabited from British Columbia to California. Preferred resting and den areas generally coincide with late-successional coniferous and mixed coniferous-deciduous forest. High forest canopy closure or multiple canopies and shrubs. Areas supporting diverse prey base are most used. Dens & rest sites are generally used in large diameter trees, large snags, tree cavities, and logs. To sum it up, they prefer forest which have the characteristics similar to old growth forest.

Terry Farrell, Oregon Fish & Wildlife assistant wildlife biologist in Roseburg is quoted stating he estimates there are less than 100 fishers total in Oregon. Those are in thanks to reintroductions in 1961, 1977 and 1981, when fishers were taken from British Columbia and Minnesota and released in Oregon forests to help control porcupine damage to timber. However very little to no tracking was done to track population growth or success of reintroduction.

In 2003 Keith Aubrey & Jeffery Lewis wrote an article; “Extirpation and reintroduction of fishers in Oregon”. In this article they researched sightings of fishers throughout Oregon. Categorizing the reliability of sightings with a number value of 1 to 6, one being the highest reliability (photographic data or trapped fisher) and 6 being the lowest (visual sighting only, no tangible evidence). Rankings 1 through 4 are then mapped. The highest volume of reliable reports came from the two populations in Southern Oregon. However reliable sightings are also mapped in or around Joseph, Tillamook and Mount Hood. Then research was done on any previous surveys, which, is greatly limited. The largest areas in Oregon surveyed included those where the 2 known populations call home. Which of course received positive identification of fishers habiting the area. No real data has ever been taken from other parts of the state. Leaving these couple questions open;

Are the populations in Southern Oregon growing, declining or stagnant?

Have fishers from Southern Oregon expanded to new areas?

Are their unknown populations of fishers in other parts of the state?

These and many other questions Project Wilderness would like to answer. We have submitted our initial proposal to receive authorization to formally assess the status of the fisher within Oregon.

How is it that when Kerry Collins was quarterback for the Titans, they loose six in a row, and when Vince Young steps in the picture, they win five in a row?

Amazing.

When Vince Young drove the ball 99 yards down the field for the win against the Cardinals yesterday, it was apparent that he’s the talented and clutch QB that the Titans need. I figured that it was his experience from Texas that he brought to the team, or maybe it was head coach Jeff Fisher’s decision the wear a Peyton Manning jersey at a charity event that has given them their winning streak.

Whatever it is, the Titans need to keep the ball moving. They play the undefeated Colts next weekend, and I’m sure that Manning’s jersey won’t help them. But if they can upset the Colts, that’ll bring them one step closer to a wildcard spot, and perhaps the biggest comeback in NFL history.

The Warner Robins Police Department hired two new K-9 officers this month with plans for a third in January.

One of the new dogs is German Shepard and Belgian Malinois mix, that goes by the name of Rasty. His handler is officer Nick Taylor.

The other dog is a German Shepherd named Ollie. Officer Greg Martin handles 14-month-old Ollie.

Both dogs specialize in sniffing out drugs. Their skills are used daily on traffic stops.

The dogs are also used to apprehend suspects and locate missing people.

The dogs began training as puppies at a facility in North Carolina, Tarheel Canine Training Inc.

The K-9 that will join the department in January specializes in sniffing out weapons and explosives. K-9 Unit Supervisor Sgt. Wayne Fisher says they use those types of dogs to find weapons dropped by suspects fleeing from a crime scene. They also use them to find weapons or respond to bomb threats in schools.

Sgt. Wayne Fisher

The dog that will arrive in January will replace Sgt. Fisher’s K-9 partner, Lt. Arno. The pair began working together 7 years ago. Sgt. Fisher says Arno is 11-years-old and suffering from hip problems.

Sgt. Fisher says his partner still enjoys working. Just this week, Sgt. Fisher said he and Lt. Arno arrested two people and sniffed out the suspects’ stash of marijuana and cocaine.

Sgt. Fisher said, “It’s kind of a sad thing coming to the end of a chapter working with a partner, but it’s also very exciting having the opportunity to start another chapter.”

Officer Ollie and Officer Rasty, both K-9’s cost the police department $9,000 each.

The dog arriving in January will cost the department $5,000. Sgt. Fisher says they will get a discount, because he plans to help teach other K-9 handlers classes at the facility in North Carolina where they will get the dog.

The dogs usually retire between the age of 10 and 13. Sgt. Fisher says the K-9’s often retire to their handler’s home becoming personal pets.

Pau Gasol returned tonight with questions about his hamstring, and conditioning. All questions anwered! 24/13/3, with a blocked shot in 35 minutes. That’s the headline, but the real story is team balance. Something that was missing in the first 11 games. Six players in double figures, Five players with 5 or more rebounds, and 20 assists.

The defense also improved. Luol Deng, who was averaging 17 pts a game, was held to 6 and Salmons, who scored 18 in the first half, was held scoreless in the second. How did this happen? The great defense of Ron Artest who also scored 15/5/3 with 3 steals. Derek Fisher, who had been struggling with his shot…….5 for 5, and Lamar Odom (who told Phil Jackson a couple days ago that the second unit needed him to be in there) had 11 and 8, but more important, was a +20 on the +/- chart.

The only thing missing tonight was my dream lineup. Bynum, Gasol, Odom, Artest, and Bryant. Please Mr. Jackson, just once, throw me that bone.

The Battle of Ontario is back, though that doesn’t necessarily mean the Leafs and Sens are great teams or anything. Toronto and Ottawa went at it tonight it the form of four brouhahas and the Senators managed to do a tad more damage on the actual scoresheet, winning 3-2 behind a pair of Mike Fisher goals.

This one had some fire but was the same old result for the Leafs, who dropped their fourth in a row after a run of seven straight games with a point. Goals by Phil Kessel and Niklas Hagman gave Toronto a 2-1 lead early in the second, but a power play tip by Milan Michalek and a softy three minutes later by Fisher proved to be the difference.

The Leafs out-shot the Sens 32-21 but didn’t exactly get the best of efforts from Vesa Toskala, who started in place of Jonas Gustavsson. The Monster was pulled midway through the first Saturday after giving up three goals on five shots to the Flames.

The loss drops Toronto to 3-11-5 — tied for last in the NHL with the Hurricanes, who they face Thursday in Carolina.

I know I made this recipe before and it turned out heavenly…perfect Gingerbread! Did I really

I know I made this recipe before and it turned out heavenly…perfect Gingerbread! Did I really not get around to blogging this recipe yet? I must remedy this asap! This recipe is included in a book by one of my new favorite food authors, MFK Fisher. How to Cook a Wolf The book dates from the early 1940s and it’s a fascinating look at enjoying the best food you can during times of war and deprivation: WWI, The Great Depression, & WWII (she even discusses when desperate measures are required to not starve.)

The Recipe for Edith’s Gingerbread:
(Note: it’s a soft gingerbread not hard like cookies)

1/4 Cup Shortening (I used butter instead)
1/4 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cup Molasses
1/2 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
1 Teaspoon Ginger
Pinch of Cloves
Pinch of Salt
3/4 Cup Boiling Water
1/4 Teaspoon Baking Soda (Yes, Baking Soda is listed twice.)
1 1/4 Cups Flour (Used Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Flour Mix)
1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
1 beaten egg

Steps:
1. Cream the butter and sugar together (Easier if you use a mixer.)
2. Sift the spices, flour, and baking powder together. (Does anyone still really sift these days? I don’t have a one.)
3. Beat the 1/2 teaspoon of soda into the molasses until it is light & fluffy, and add to the butter and sugar.
4. Add the 1/4 teaspoon of soda to the boiling water, then add it alternately with the dry ingredients.
5. Fold in the beaten egg when all is well mixed.
6. Pour into a greased and floured pan.
7. Bake at 325 Degrees F for ~20 minutes. (NOTE: Took me ~ 40 minutes for the batter to cook fully so don’t worry if it takes you longer too – just keep an eye on it.)
Note: This mixture will seem much to thin to make a cake but do NOT try to increase the quantity of flour as many doubting cooks have tried to do.

I’ll admit I wasn’t sure how closely I followed all the mixing, boiling, fluff, etc of the recipe alchemy exactly…but even with my relaxed style of baking this recipe turned out FAB!

Bonnie and Clyde (Penn 1967) would at first glance be seen as another crime film, though it is one of many that helped usher in the Hollywood Renaissance. By looking at its fluctuations in tone, jump-cuts, and the conflicted protagonists, labeling this film as something that was “inspired” by French New Wave comes as no surprise. Bonnie and Clyde is also a prime example of the demythologization of gangster films; the protagonists don’t seek power or revenge from robbing banks. They’re just in it for the money.

As an “art film”, Bonnie and Clyde demonstrates the elements of sudden changes in tone and jumbled jump-cuts. The audience wouldn’t have expected such a gruesomely violent film if it wasn’t for the banjos playing during the Barrow gang’s getaway. We also see some other comical, lighthearted moments in the film: the Barrow gang laughing in the backseat, fooling around with their Kodak camera, and Buck, Clyde’s brother, even dares to casually snatch an officer’s sunglasses away during a heist. But these jolly scenes are a stark contrast to the more violent ones interspersed in the film.

The gunfighting scenes are either prolonged and dramatic, or quick and shocking. When the bank manager gets shot in the face, the shot only lasts for a second. No dramatic music, no extreme close-ups; just a few quick glimpses of spattered blood and shattered glass, and then the scene cuts to a lighthearted musical playing in a movie theater. Director Arthur Penn must have done this effect to shock the audience, giving them time to pick their jaws off from the floor and contemplate what the heck just happened after the scene cuts away. Also, when Buck, Clyde’s brother, finally gives into his wounds, he takes his last breath, and the camera zooms in on his twitching fingers. As his wife cries over his death, the mood is notably somber and tragic, but it quickly moves onto Bonnie, Clyde, and C.W. making their escape. Of course, the most revered shot in the movie is the ending, when Bonnie and Clyde are ambushed by the police. The chain of jump-cuts added a great deal of suspense and confusion, which definitely keeps the audience on the edge of their seat; even after watching it numerous times, my heart still races. With these film mechanics, Bonnie and Clyde separates itself from a typical crime film; they act as devices that let the audience know that this is a movie they’re watching, and not a romanticized story riding on the coattails of Classical Hollywood Cinema.

Despite their happy-go-lucky attitude, the protagonists are by no means heroic figures. Bonnie, who is suddenly thrust into the world of crime, simply wants to get away from the humdrum farmlands and escape her repetitious lifestyle as a waitress. She later becomes homesick, wishing to see her family. But because of the paper trail she and the rest of the gang they have left behind, her mother doesn’t think she will “live long” if Bonnie decides to get a house close to her family. Clyde, despite his manly and charming appearance, is sexually awkward, which is the last thing you would expect from a handsome guy like him, even with all the sexual chemistry that was formulating between him and Bonnie in the beginning.

The demythologization of gangster films is apparent in Bonnie and Clyde: typically, the gangster would turn into a violent figure because he didn’t realize the limits of his criminal activity (which would lead to his tragic death). However, Bonnie and Clyde don’t rob banks for the sake of being financially secure and being free from the law. For one, we don’t see the duo and the rest of the Barrow crew splurging their money on jewelry and huge houses. They’re seen wearing the same raggedy clothes, living in the same, worn-down houses. And even though they don’t channel their inner Robin Hood and give their money out to the poor, they don’t see any benefit in robbing them or shooting them to death. Also, Clyde comes to the conclusion that Bonnie simply needs an escape from the monotonous, predictable life as a waitress. But despite the Barrow crew’s carefree attitude about their bank heists, the end of this film is tragic: Buck, Clyde’s brother, eventually succumbs to his head wound, his wife is blinded by a stray bullet, and Bonnie and Clyde are ambushed by the police, killed in a hailstorm of bullets and blood. The changing tones throughout this film is also integral to the genre convention of demythologization; crime is supposed to be seen as evil, but Penn depicts their escapades as fun and innocent, while the law is shown to be clumsy and unskilled.

It’s important to note that Bonnie and Clyde was one of the first films to show gratuitous violence (and depictions of sex), and through art film, it gives a sense of realism and authenticity that couldn’t be conveyed before due to the Hays Code. I would also like to think that the exploitation of sex and violence most likely played a role in the film’s commercial success, despite Warner Bros. lack of faith in the film. In retrospect, the showers of bullets and blood and sexual innuendos are pretty tame compared to what has been shown in theaters these days. I, personally, enjoyed the film, and it was a nice change of pace from watching Shoot the Piano Player last week. Even though my expectations of an absolute bloodbath in the ending were somewhat deflated, the climax leading up to Bonnie and Clyde’s death is unquestionably a nail-biting moment. I also enjoyed how Bonnie and Clyde were depicted as being more human and tangible, instead of portraying them as (predictably) heartless, gun-toting, cigar-smoking criminals.

Since Day 1, the Fisher faculty and Career Services department have reminded us that our school work is not our only priority. They have tried to instill in us this notion that internship/job searching is equally important, if not crucial to the overall success of our MBA. I mean, they have a point: if we graduate from Fisher with leadership, business and teamwork skills, but we are unemployed, how can we be the next generation of leaders in corporate America?

Despite this rational logic, their advice has fallen on deaf ears. Grades are measurable; progress in the internship search is not. Although my main objective at Fisher is to graduate with a rewarding job, I have succumbed to the day-to-day attrition of the core curriculum. (This is a major obstacle to finding an internship.) However, I have good news. Today I had a revelation – this is my first ever revelation and will quite possibly be my last – especially if this one burns me in the end.

The Fahrendorf Revelation simply states that life will never slow down or become any easier. Professors will never slow down or give me “time off” to focus on the outside world. If I need to spend more time internship searching, I will need to prioritize my school work and focus only on the important material. I simply don’t have time to do everything. This revelation is analogous to the law of conservation of energy. For example, I can change the form of my energy to focus on school or on the internship search, but I cannot double my energy to do equal work in both categories. Energy is finite; I have to learn to make do with what I have been given. The key is to prioritize, prioritize, and prioritize.

This watershed moment in my MBA career couldn’t have come at a better time. Next Friday I am travelling up to Solon, OH to take a tour of Nestle and speak with individuals at the company about their experience in brand development. I will make sure to get the most out of this opportunity and hopefully my changed philosophy will reward me down the road.

On a different subject, I would like to recognize all the military veterans at Fisher and across the country. Yesterday was Veteran’s Day and the University was closed in their honor. Thank you to all the men and women that have served this country.

Shoot the Piano Player (Truffaut 1960) is definitely not as politically-charged compared to its Fren

Shoot the Piano Player (Truffaut 1960) is definitely not as politically-charged compared to its French New Wave brethren like Godard’s Weekend (1967), but it still fits the bill among the movement’s tropes. It’s not a film that’s easily pinned down to one genre, due to the many inflections of tone and mood throught the film, so all that’s left of the film to be defined by is its auteur, Truffaut, and the tropes he is associated with in his body of work. The meandering, unfocused narrative, the jump-cuts (as well as other editing techniques), and making references to the fact that this is a film and not a story being transcribed on-screen are some of the many characteristics of French New Wave found in this film.

One of the tropes that stands out in this movie is its convoluted narrative. At first, I thought the man running in the film’s opening shot was our protagonist, but it wasn’t until after the bar fight that the shift in focus suddenly directed towards Charlie, the pianist. Also, to quote Jean-Luc Godard, “A story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end, but not necessarily in that order.” Shoot the Piano Player lives up to that by using one extensive flashback: when Lena jogs Charlie’s memory, we, the audience, finally get to see his past life as Edouard Saroyan, a once-famous pianist who lost it all when his wife Thérèse committed suicide. The flashback, in this sense, serves as an introduction to Charlie and his involvement in the story, even though this part wasn’t revealed until about halfway through the movie. Even the shots reflected the unfocused narration. In the car “hostage” scene, with the gangsters, Charlie, and Lena driving through Paris, the shots not only violate the 180-degree rule, but they also cut away to numerous shots pointing outside the car window, as well as focusing the shot at another character, even if he or she isn’t the one speaking.

The tone throughout this film is like a rollercoaster, with many dips and hills, so much to the point that Shoot the Piano Player cannot be pinned down to one genre. The gangsters are a prime example; by being labeled as gangsters, the audience would assume that they’re supposed to be threatening and are only concerned about getting their loans repaid. But once they corner Charlie and Lena, they don’t snatch them away from the sidewalks in black ski masks and AK-47s in tow. They simply casually walk up to them and escort them to the car like gentlemen. The scene inside the car is just as placid; no one’s being held at gunpoint, no one’s making any hasty escapes, and neither are Charlie and Lena crying buckets and demanding that their lives be spared. What’s more surprising is that later in the scene, they’re all having a casual conversation and even laughing as if they were longtime friends. But towards the end of the film, the gangsters are shown to be much more aggressive antagonistic; all they want is their money, even if it is stained with Chico’s blood. After kidnapping Charlie’s youngest brother Fido and finding Chico’s hiding place, they immediately go on the offensive with guns drawn.

Jump-cuts are a FNW auteur’s best friend, and Shoot the Piano Player is practically bosom buddies with them: not even a minute into the film, Charlie’s brother runs around frantically, and after hitting his head on a pole, a stranger helps him up, and it immediately fast-forwards to the two of them talking about personal matters as if their friendship blossomed in a matter of minutes. Also, after Charlie (or Edouard) finishes his concert, the audience’s applause is immediately interrupted by the shot of him and his wife walking down the theater’s steps, and suddenly, to them driving off to the hotel in their car. There’s no physical shot of Edouard being congratulated for his performance, nor is there a shot of him and his wife walking towards the car. The transitions are inferred by the audience, which further highlights the film’s meandering narrative ellipsis. It’s important to note that because this was an independent film, the director was on a tight budget, so Truffaut had to cut corners by shortening the length of scenes (to get rid of the unnecessary fluff in dialogue and scene transitions, which is how the jump-cuts here are developed) or even reuse certain shots. In the opening chase scene, Chico is seen running away from something, and after he talks to the stranger that helped him up earlier, it looks like the same shot is used, but in a reversed view to make it look like he’s running in different directions. Also, towards the end of the film, in the countryside, Lena looks like she’s running in circles, but she is intended to look like she’s running a long distance.

The film’s jumbled narrative, swings in tone, and jump-cuts all highlight the fact that this movie does not fit the boundaries of Classical Hollywood Cinema. But I believe the sing-along scene after Charlie’s brother escapes the gangsters in the bar (or as I like to call it, the “karaoke” scene) is a vital cinematic device that makes the audience aware that this is a movie they’re watching, not a romantic, emotionally engaging story that they can lose themselves in. I believe that scene was meant to be like a musical intermission, like when something goes awry during an on-stage production, they immediately break out the band to distract the audience from the fiasco that just occurred. In this case, the fiasco was the anti-climactic mini-chase scene between Chico and the gangsters inside the bar: when Charlie threw the cases of glass bottles in front of them, it did nothing to stop them. They just stepped over the cases and ran out the door. It was so poorly executed that even some of the dancers in the bar looked in awe, so the singer immediately runs in and sings for the barhoppers, as well as the audience, by showing the song’s subtitles on the bottom.

Shoot the Piano Player is not a movie to take at face value. For me, there was definitely some head-scratching by the time “Fin” faded onto the screen. If I were to watch this as a casual moviegoer expecting romance and thrills, I’d storm out the theater and demand a refund. But by learning about the tropes of French New Wave beforehand and breaking down the conventions of Classical Hollywood Cinema, I start to appreciate the tactics used by Truffaut that made me think why I disliked this film. As ironic as that sounds, French New Wave is supposed to be alienating and perplexing, and ultimately, get the audience to participate in the process of filmmaking, and Shoot the Piano Player succeeds at this.
