Frankly, I don’t get the appeal.  They just sit there in a boat, dangling a piece of string in the water.  They say it’s relaxing and all, but I don’t wanna relax!  I wanna run, jump around — you know, dog stuff — but instead I’m stuck here staring at this water for hours.  And I haven’t even seen one fish.  Not.  One.  Fish.

And to top it all off, my tail hurts for some reason.

According to Sender Inners Lan and Heather T., these are Bubble Eye Goldfish, taken and COEX Aquarium in Seoul, South Korea. “We haven’t named it yet, but I think we’ll leave it you at CuteOverload. You can think up of way cuter names than we ever could. It’s of the same fish, and the 2nd photo is after it ran into something sharp and got deflated. It’s not hurt. It just re-inflates itself after a while.”

            Ever since I first joined Pandanda and fished there, I’ve realized that some names of the fishes sound like insults. And out of the people who have fished there too, I’m surprised that only one person mentioned it to me. There were at least three or four fishes I saw with names of insults. I only managed to find two. One of them was the Big Mouth Bass.

            Another one was the Fathead Minnow. It always reminds me of George Lopez being called a fathead on tv or someone on a cartoon yelling “fathead” at someone else.

But (gasp!) if I could offer a suggestion (wheeze!), and far be it from me (choke!) to influence what I’m sure (urk!) must be a challenging decision (harrgh!), but you might want your first wish (aaack!) to be for a fish tank, (hurrp!) maybe a bucket of water…

One of my best friends introduced me to the wonderful short short stories of Dave Eggers some time ago. You would have to read them yourself to discover their magic. Here’s my favourite pick:

What The Water Feels Like To The Fishes
Like the fur of a chinchilla. Like the cleanest tooth. Yes, the fishes say, this is what it feels like. People always ask the fishes, ‘What does the water feel like to you?’ and the fishes are always happy to oblige. Like feathers are to other feathers, they say. Like powder touching ash. We smile and nod. When the fishes tell us these things, we begin to understand. We begin to think we know what the water feels like to the fishes. But it’s not always like fur and ash and the cleanest tooth. At night, they say, the water can be different. At night, when it’s very cold, it can be like the tongue of a cat. At night, when it’s very very cold, it’s like cracked glass. Or honey. Or forgiveness, they say, ha ha. When the fishes answer these questions – which they are happy to do – they also ask why. They are curious things, fish are, and thus they ask, ‘Why? Why do you want to know what the water feels like to the fishes?’ And we are never quite sure. The fishes press further. ‘Do you breathe air?’ they ask. The answer is yes. Well then, they say, ‘What does the air feel like to you?’ And we do not know. We think of air and we think of wind, but that’s another thing. Wind is air in action, air on the move, and the fishes know this. Well then, they ask again, ‘What does the air feel like?’ And we have to think about this. Air feels like air, we say, and the fishes laugh mirthlessly. ‘Think!’ they say. ‘Think,’ they say, now gentler. And we think and we guess that air feels like hair, thousands of hairs, swaying ever so slightly in breezes microscopic. The fishes laugh again. ‘Do better, think harder,’ they say, encouraging us. It feels like language, we say, and they are impressed. ‘Keep going,’ they say. It feels like blood, we say, and they say, ‘No, no, now you’re getting colder.’ The air is like being wanted, we say, and they nod approvingly. The air is like being pushed and pulled and yanked, punched and slapped and misunderstood and loved, we say, and the fishes sigh and touch our forearm sympathetically.

Willard and Wanda Worrywart were, perhaps predictably, two nervous nellies to be begin with. Willard often compulsively paced in circles, while Wanda fretted over the smallest disruptions.

But in recent days, the Worrywarts often found themselves on the verge of suffering full-blown panic attacks. Their mental states were deteriorating, and Willard was especially affected.

It was their new neighbor; he was bizarre, and frankly, terrifying. It was like living in an episode of the Twilight Zone.

They had no one to complain to, so they were forced to endure the daily harassment. Neither Willard nor Wanda knew how long they’d last. But they knew one thing for certain: When they woke up, he would be there.

Some fishes are really rare that is hard to catch. Even if the player’s level high, they will not get it with their first try. So, I decided to make a Poll on which fish is the hardest to catch!

1. Birthday Cakefish – Okay, maybe some of you have known this fish. This fish can be caught using the 2,000 coins birthday cake from the food shop! I didn’t buy it because I do not want to waste my money on a fish!

2. Blue Betta – Blue Betta is a fish that can glow in the dark. Yes, this fish can only be caught using fish biscuit from the CASH shop! I cannot catch it because I don’t buy cash.

This is what I imagine the poor goldfish felt like after his ordeal.

So, a funny thing happened on Monday night.  We have a tank with two goldfish in it and on the bottom we had small blue pebbles.  My husband comes home and looks in the tank.  He notices that the bigger of the two fish has something stuck in his mouth…a blue pebble.  So the fish had been swimming around for who know how long with this pebble stuck in his mouth unable to close his mouth.  Poor thing!  So, my husband and Dad decide they have to help the poor fish out. 

They take him out of the tank…my hubby has fish in hand and was examining the situation…the fish then begins to flop around and falls on the floor!  My husband shouts ‘Oh, my God!’ and snatches up the fish..my Dad and hubby then began shouting for my Mom and I to give them a toothpick so they can get the pebble out.  My Mom in her rush has a hard time getting them the toothpick…finally, she gets one out and my husband is able to pop the pebble out of the poor fish’s mouth…I know because I heard the pebble hit the floor.  Goldfish goes back in the tank after a successful operation and all is well. 

I had a good laugh while all this was going on and the next day we got rid of the blue pebbles and put in bigger rocks.

Fishermen have been a respected community for thousands of years for their honest and hard work.  When Jesus Christ decided to select his closest followers, he went to a fishing village to choose them.  The Holy Book includes several stories about Jesus and his apostles involved in fishing activities on the Sea of Gallilee.

The Synoptic gospels of Mark (1:14-20), Matthew (4:18-22), and Luke (5:1-11) describe how Jesus recruited four of his  apostles from the shores of Lake Galilee: the fishermen Simon and his brother Andrew and the brothers John and James.

One of Jesus famous teaching episodes, the Sermon on the Mount, was given on a hill overlooking the lake while many of his miracles also occurred here including his walking on water, calming a storm, and his feeding five thousand people at Tabgha.

The fish was a symbol of Christianity when the early Christians were forced to go underground to protect themselves from the constant attacks of the Romans.

During my recent visit to a humble fishing cooperative at the entrance of the Panama Canal, I observed an elder fisherman busy mending a dark net.  I asked for his permission to take a couple of pictures while he was doing his job.  He smiled faintly, mumbled a polite “yes”, and continued repairing his net.

While I observed this hard working man doing him job, I thought how little has changed since the early days of the fishermen at Lake Gaililee. For this man fishing is his life just like it was during biblical times. (Credit: Omar Upegui R.)

Yep, fishermen are hard working people involved in an honest profession.  It has been this way for thousands of years.  Good Day.
