I have been wanting to experiment with more photography lately. Thanks to one of my favorite actors, Elijah Woods, I started to really want to get into some lomo photography. So I purchased the Lomography Fisheye camera (its all white and soo cool looking) and have been using it more so than my SLR! For one, I have always loved the way the fisheye lens looks but I’m a poor kiddo and thought it would be too pricey to buy a fisheye lens. So I went to Urban Outfitters and bought the Lomography Fisheye camera for about $50. Here are some of the pictures I have taken so far. I am now trying to experiment with different film so hopefully I have more to post soon!

ICH HAB ES GETAN.

nach langem hin und her hab ich es doch getan. und ich muss sagen ich fühl mich gut dabei. nein wirklich. ich bereue es nicht.

ich hab mir eine lomo fisheye kamera  gekauft.

& ich muss sagen ich hab sie erst einen tag und hab jetzt schon eine menge spaß mir iher gehabt, mein liebling. jetzt sind wohl alle drauf gespannt was aus den bildern geworden ist. wir können es kaum erwarten. ich werd sie euch natürlich selbstverständlich zeigen sobald ich sie hab.

aktueller update:

noch 3 wochen schule till holidays & dann sind auch schon die erzeuger da & dann wird afrika gesehen.

jetzt kommen die 2 wochen voll mit examens & carlotta hat keine lust zu lernen und überhaupt.

carlotta ist sehr sehr stolz auf sich das sie die ersten beiden enligsh examens ohne große verzweifler geschafft hat.

das 3. und letzte english exam wird wohl das schwerste und carlotta hat gar kein burchblick aber das ist ok, denn carlotta ist nicht perfekt.

vielleicht sieht carlotta auch nochmal eswas anderes außer kapstadt, vielleicht fährt carlotta mit moritz mit nach joburg. aber nur vielleicht. mama, papa darf ich?!

carlotta genießt die sonne & ist im culcha candela und deichkind fieber.

was carlotta wohl grade sehr glücklich machen würde: türkisch für anfänger.

was carlotta kaum glauben kann: wie miro aussieht. awesome.

wen carlotta jetzt bei sich haben will: laura & anna.

& was wohl am wichtigsten ist, was carlotta an afrika liebt: die lebensfreude. es ist in deutschland wohl unmöglich das man es schafft, dass ein halber club sich die schuhe auszieht und barfuß weiter tanzt. obwohl es deutsche angefangen haben.

carlotta hatte bis jetzt eine wundertolle zeit hier und möchte das die 3 wochen jetzt ganz schnell gehen und die ferien niemals aufhören.

sie will noch nicht gehen, aber die kann es nicht erwarten alle wieder zu sehen. <3

I woke up late after Friday night’s Shisha/chill session. Met Marc to go get some things then Steph for Sushi birthday dinner and Shisha again at Haji, followed by Dim Sum at 2am, and we roamed around Little India till 6+am. Go to Marc’s blog for his more detailed pictorial version of the night.

I had medical appointments today scheduled for 2pm. I somehow got out of work by 11am. Thinking I was still heaps early I took a taxi and decided to head home to put all my shit down at home. But halfway through the ride I decided it would be more productive to just head straight to town where the clinic was. In no time, I found myself roaming around Far East Plaza. There I got a pack of ciggies and a super awesome looking Cricket lighter then headed over to the hair dressers to get THE LAST HAIR CUT AS A MILITARY PERSONAL. On the way down I browsed through shops and landed myself at a camera store at the first level and managed to hook myself up with a fisheye lens converter for my NIKON P6000. Super stoked! After that, I went over to borders, met Sarah who was working there and had a bit of a chat, got some sweet magazines and left for Paragon. After a ten minute elevator ride I get to the front desk of the clinic to find out that I needed my passport to actually do any of the check-up’s… I was SO upset… so I dragged myself out to the lift lobby and back down to Orchard and took a train home. To make everything else worse, I get home only to realise right there and then that I’ve left my work shoes somewhere in town (most likely the camera shop) fuck…

But its all good. Less then half a day of work + New Lens + New Hair Cut + New Magazines + An afternoon nap = It’s Cool!

A beta version of the next Confluence release is out. And guess what — it’s got gadgets. This is pretty cool, so I’m jumping the gun and telling you about it right now.

It’s still just a beta release: Confluence 3.1 Open Beta. The announcement is on the Atlassian News Blog, along with an invitation to try it out. So I got myself a copy and put some gadgets onto a wiki page.

Now, the gadgets I chose are perhaps not the most useful. The most usual business case would be to add gadgets published by other Atlassian applications. For example, you might want to add a gadget that displays some information from another Confluence site or from  JIRA, Bamboo, FishEye or Crucible. (Those are other applications developed by Atlassian, the company I work for.)

But for me, the fun bit is that I can add the gadget that I created and blogged about 8 months ago.

How do you add a gadget to a Confluence page?

Your Confluence page can display two types of gadgets:

• Internal — These are gadgets published by the same Confluence site as where they are displayed. Typically such a gadget would display information sourced from the Confluence site, such as an activity stream or a search function.
• External — These are gadgets published by another Confluence site, or a JIRA site, or even something totally different like Remember the Milk, a hamster in a wheel or a pet monkey.

If your gadget is external, the Confluence administrator needs to add the gadget to the list of available gadgets before you can add it to your Confluence page. This needs to happen only once for each gadget.

To make an external gadget available in your Confluence site:

1. Log in as a Confluence administrator.
2. Go to ‘Confluence Admin‘ and click ‘External Gadgets‘ in the left-hand navigation panel.
3. Paste the URL of your gadget into the field labelled ‘Gadget Specification URL‘. The URL should point to the XML file that describes the gadget.

For example, take a look at the URLs for the two gadgets in my screenshots above. The URL for the WordPress gadget is:

Friendly warning: I’m just using my gadget as an example here. It’s a total hack, so please don’t insert it into any Confluence sites that matter! You’ll get all sorts of weird display problems, plus potential security issues too.

To add a gadget (external or internal) to a Confluence page:

1. Create a new page or edit an existing page.
2. Put your cursor in the edit box where you want the gadget displayed.
3. Click the ‘Insert/Edit Macro‘ icon  in the toolbar.
4. You’ll see the ‘Select Macro’ popup window. Enter some text into the search box at top right, to find the gadget you want.
   
5. Click the gadget you want. You’ll see a preview of the gadget. Most gadgets also offer you some options to configure the gadget, such as width of the display, background colour, etc.
   
6. Change the settings if you like, then click ‘Insert‘.
7. Save the Confluence page.

Extra authorisation step (OAuth)

Some gadgets require extra authorisation, to reassure the publishing server that it’s OK to send its data to the server where the gadget is displayed. Gadgets use an authorisation protocol called OAuth. There are two parts to the authorisation, one performed by the administrator and one by the person adding the gadget to or viewing the gadget on the page.

1. The administrator needs to set up the OAuth relationship between the gadget publishing server (called the provider) and the displaying server (called the consumer). This authorisation step needs to happen only once for each site. Once you’ve authorised one server to send information to another server, then you can add multiple gadgets from that server. For example, let’s say you want to display JIRA gadgets on a Confluence page. Your JIRA server needs to trust your Confluence server. So you’ll need to add Confluence as an OAuth consumer in JIRA. To do this, you will give JIRA the URL of your Confluence server. The instructions are in the JIRA documentation.
2. When you add a gadget to a page, you will need to authorise the display of information under the authority of your user ID. Similarly, every user who views the page will need to authorise the display of the information under their user ID.  The authorisation lasts for a while (a week or so, unless you revoke it). The gadget will display a ‘Log In and Approve‘ button. When you click the button, you will go to the login page of the site concerned. Log in and then approve the gadget’s access to the server’s information. Now you’ll see the gadget information displayed. There’s a full write-up in the Gadgets documentation.

Phew, I’m glad we’ve got that out of the way!

The Confluence 3.1 beta release is out, so you can hack away. If you’re very brave, you could even write your own gadget and put it on a Confluence page!

On Friday I did a little shoot for an odd little Podcast call The C Word: Naked. This is for a trailer for the Podcast that is to go out onto the interwebz. It is being edited as we speak but I have cut together a few of the shots. We chose to use the Nikon because for half of the sequence we were shooting in a voiceover booth and the light levels were very low, too low to use the 202. Also we wanted it wacky so the fisheye was used for a few shots. For audio we recorded to an external solid state recorder, all up I think we used three channels. The audio in this edit is just the onboard mic however as I havn’t synced the audio tracks yet. The rig performed great, allowed me to get nice stable footage (I dont think I noticed any rolling shutter effects in any of the footage) As to what the trailer is actually about, you will just have to wait and see, check it out soon at www.cword.tv

I recently attended a one day motivational course which was rather useful. It kinda helps you make your workplace a better one and changes your thinking on always being a complaint.

The trainer quoted that SM Goh Chok Tong once said that Singaporeans are a bunch of people that only love to complain. But what the trainer taught us is that – We can complain till the cows come home, but the question is – what can we do about it? Prolly not many people ask themselves about it, but in fact, I feel that we all should ask ourselves about what we can do about it.

Many at times we complain and complain and complain. And the fact that only a minority finds a solution to the complains are those that are smart enough to move on. I mean – if we don’t adapt, we die no? It’s all about accepting the change and putting a smile on your face, knowing that a better tomorrow can be achieved if your perspective in life weren’t that full of negativity.

It was a real refresher. I came out thinking differently. And I came out thinking that if I don’t move on with an eye of ambition, I will not achieve what I want and what I deserve. Hard work pays most of the time. So it’s either I sit there and sulk, hoping that miracles will fall from the sky, or I can go out there, in the scariest of all jungles, and make my way out of here to a better place of paradisaical feel.

So are you still sitting there in your underwear watching tv? Get up! Do something about your life. Don’t frown and fret over the smallest things that our weak hearts couldn’t take. Because the only medicine to your weakness is your positivity to NOT let your heart feel that way.

And remember to smile, because a Smile is a curve that sets everything straight. =)

7AM Saturday: meet Henry at New Morning Bakery.  1st cup of coffee – dark roast.  Talk photography.

7:25AM:  2nd cup of coffee – still dark roast.  More photography.

7:45AM: Out and about in Corvallis.  It was supposed to be raining – but instead – we were greeted with a partly sunny morning still a bit wet from the night before.  Henry was trying out his new kit – and I thought I’d futz more with the Lensbaby Fisheye Optic (review posted here).

9:10AM: On the way home for more coffee.  French roast.

As for the Fisheye Optic – I liked f/11 so much – I tried it again.  Still trying to get the hang of it – but it’s definitely fun.

There’s an old adage in photography – “What’s the best way to capture great photographs?  f8 and be there.”  In other words, if you’re not out there you can’t possibly shoot great photographs.

Now that the sailing season in the Northeast is coming to an end, we decided to heed those words of wisdom and flex our shutters.  With no particular destination or subject matter in mind, we set out with cameras, lenses, tripods and our brains to see what we could see.  And shoot.

It was great exercise, both for our shutters and our creative minds.  We used all of our lenses – telephoto, wide angle, Lensbaby, fisheye – to show the same scene through radically different views.  We wandered through fields of wildflowers as the 20 mph winds swirled about.  How could we freeze that motion?  How could we use that motion to our advantage?  We found moving water and experimented with using shutter speeds and apertures to make the same water look different in every shot.  And we happened upon a group of windsurfers which provided the familiar opportunity to shoot some sails.

Here are a few of our 300+ shots from our safari. They may not win any awards or make it into National Geographic, but that’s not the point. The point is that we learned a lot and had fun. If you have a camera, get out there and have some fun of your own.

Day 1: Part 1

Our plane landed as the sun was starting to peer above the horizon, displaying beautiful oranges and reds. We gathered our bearings and headed for the metro with our hotel in sights. Our first stop was to the wonderful area of Barceloneta. This is the beach area, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, which offers great restaurants and clubs up and down the walkway. We were lucky enough to get a beautiful blue sky and warm sun for our travels.

There were some incredible sand castles that incorporated working fountains, windmills, and chimneys. Truly amazing indeed. I can officially say that I put my feet into the Mediterranean Sea. Check! What a way to start out our Spanish journey.

I took over 1,200 pictures….it is safe to say there is a ton more to come!
