The flag is clearly visible on Google Earth, even at a relatively high altitude It isn’t easy

The flag is clearly visible on Google Earth, even at a relatively high altitude

It isn’t easy to get too involved in the political life of Cyprus, especially as a recently arrived visitor. Every argument has a counter, and every historical grievance has antecedents on an island that has been so strategic for so many empires … including, historically, one’s own. But some things can’t really be avoided – if only because they keep cropping up in your photographs.

Point your camera north from any high ground in the capital, and there’s a strong chance that you’ll get a Turkish flag in the shot. Clearly visible on the Kyrenia Mountains, in the Turkish-occupied northern part of the island, is the giant flag seen at right, in the image.

At night, the section on the left (“proud to be Turkish”) is illuminated in flashing lights.

This is propaganda on a rub-it-in-their faces scale, celebrating the 1974 occupation of the north by Turkey. They’d say it was protecting the Turkish-Cypriot population after a coup by Greek Cypriots; the south (and most of the rest of the world) consider it an illegal invasion that has left thousands of Greek Cypriots displaced from their homes for a generation, tens of thousands of Turks imported into the north of the island, and Nicosia the last divided capital in the world.

Getting nearer to the controversial flag

All that aside, the scale of this effort to brand the geography of the north with the Turkish flag is extraordinary. It’s visible on Google Earth, the source of the top image (once you find the flag and zoom out, you can still clearly see its location while most of the island’s outline is visible). It’s visible from across the great plain that makes up the centre of the island, and it’s increasingly visible as you head north.

The scale of the job is clearest when you’re nearest

When you drive up to it, the scale of the endeavour to produce it becomes ever-clearer. It helps to produce this kind of thing if you have an occupying army measured in the tens of thousands, I suppose, but that’s a lot of paint and a lot of electricity by night.

I don’t agree on many of the points Al-Aswany makes, but at least he tries and makes some very valid points while being reasonable and up to his rank as an intellectual.

I like his patriotism and love for his country’s flag and people, but I repeat myself and say he and others fail to point at what the Egyptians (all or part of them) did to the Algerians; and things won’t work out so long as they don’t acknowledge it.

Then he bases his analysis on Egyptian TVs reports and we (more and more people) know now there’s little truth in them.

Third point, he is exactly like his nationals who still have a too big idea of the Egyptian role in the world. It’s like time has stopped somewhere in the sixties and they are stuck in there.

Fourth point, I must admit that I don’t like how Gulf countries behave with other Arab and Asian nationals (yes, it’s not only the Egyptians) and I would love to see their respective countries react. But the issue has many aspects to consider and it needs some realism when dealing with them.

Fifth point, he talks of Nasser’s support to the Algerian country and tells us that even our anthem’s music was composed by an Egyptian, wow! The latter point is just irrelevant here, and we need an objective analysis of how and why Nasser supported the FLN members who believed in him

Sixth point, let’s be serious, how could the Egyptian population pressure the Algerian government, and how could they expect to get an apology from the Algerian government or people?!

Defending Egypt’s flag is the title of his analysis.

Happy Thanksgiving WordPress world! I have so much to be thankful for this year. I have a wonderful

Happy Thanksgiving WordPress world!

I have so much to be thankful for this year. I have a wonderful people who love me and will support me through thick and thin. I have a house, a car, and I do not lack for a thing that really matters in this life.

I have spent my Thanksgiving vacation with my family. While there have been ups and downs and stops and starts, we have had a good time. As a matter of fact, here in a few minutes I will be having some pumpkin pie.

Right now the economy is still in the crapper and soon Obama will be announcing about sending more troops to Afghanistan. This may be the last holiday a few families will have their whole family together. For me, knowing that, makes my holiday all the more precious.

Today I watched for hours on various stations members of our troops saying hello to their families. In the back of my mind I knew that those men and women are only a small portion of the men and women who are serving. As I have said before, I can never thank them enough. What I can do is pray and remember them, and I do. Daily. If not for them, our country would be a very different place. How do you say thank you to someone who allows you to continue to have the freedom of being an American? How do you say thank you to someone for giving you the gift of security. A gift that I feel is a lot of times largely forgotten.

In the aftermath of 9/11 everyone had a healthy appreciation of this attitude. This year on Veteran’s day I saw fewer than a dozen flags on homes. That is pathetic. We need to show that we are thankful and we do that by remembering. They carry a gun in danger so everyone can carry groceries in safety. They risk their lives so that we can do as we please with ours.

To all the men and women, from the bottom of the hearts of my family and I, thank you. It’s not enough, those words will never fully express my feeling, but those are the only words our language has. Please know that we are praying for you and hoping that you are staying safe, keeping strong, and will come home safe and soon.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Everyone has hard days. And everyone has different ways of coping with the stress and the fatigue that those days bring. I don’t know about everyone else, but I think a day at the beach is something that will take my mind off a few things.

I went on vacation because of a few stressful weeks. I had frequent headaches and I lost some weight. I couldn’t even sleep without dreaming about the work I had in store for the next day. So, I decided to take a break in one of the local beaches. I planned to stay there and kick myself out of the grid that kept me busy. When I got there, the first thing I noticed was the different street banners that they used in an unusual way. They set them up along the jetty so they fluttered in the wind. The thing is, since they didn’t have a street in front, they might as well advertise their events to incoming customers by setting the banners up along the jetty.

So there I was, relaxing and enjoying the bliss of not doing anything. It suddenly hit me that my home was also a source of stress. It wasn’t because of anything in it. Rather, it was because of the way the interior looked. It was too formal. It was like I saw the word “work” everywhere I looked and it just hit a nerve sometimes. I was so impressed with the beach resort so I grabbed the idea of redesigning and using the same kind of street banners to decorate the exterior. The interior would follow this theme eventually.

Okay so this post is already off to a shaky start with the title and all but really it’s far too apt to toss for a couple reasons.

I’ve been revisiting select Blink-182 songs this past week. Silly endeavour, right? Well yes and no. Since I moved apartments back in September, I’ve been forced a tad outside of my cultural comfort zone. I currently live with 3 girls, each a couple years younger than I, and all of whom self-identify as “punks” in one form or another (a lot of variation exists within this group apparently). Not to oversimplify, but I’m talking about the classic punk that barely exists outside of a caricature largely because they so rarely leave their blacker-than-death basements. I was in the middle of weaving a wordy picture of the de facto punk (black everything, mohawks, chains, piercings, ect.) in vivid detail when I came across this blog post which takes care of the heavy lifting while encompassing music taste. Sift through the images (and a video if you dare) and you’ll a have decent grasp of the style I’m describing. Though I have no aspirations to become a part of this scene, it’s infinitely interesting to observe as an outsider with a backstage pass. Even the concept of people so badly wanting to identify with one very specific label is an interesting curiosity to the lay social scientist.

Sooooo yea. An odd mix of people to throw myself into, right? I don’t think many would argue that I’m a pretty upbeat, optimistic and cheery fellow, all not particularly “punk” descriptors. I don’t know exactly how I’d describe my fashion sense (or lack thereof) and I don’t care to identify solely with any single fashion group/trend so we’ll just establish that I wear a lot of bright clothing which I’d usually get at somewhere GAP-esque if not the Salvation Army. Again, few things scream death, metal, grime and punk less than the pastel striped turtleneck sweater you’ll find in my wardrobe. Clearly we have our differences but we get along remarkably well and manage to find middle ground in certain aspects of culture like Blink-182 which is one of those oddballs we’ve all found value in at one point or another. Poor excuse for a non-creative title? I think yes

Music reference aside, the title gets well to the point of something I want to explore a bit. People often message me with questions along the lines of “What’s up guy? How’s Canada treating you?” My answer is inevitably an overblown variant of “Awesome” or the very vague “Canada loves me and I loves it back.” A few times I’ve expressed appreciation for the billion small things that make this place Canada and remind me that I’m definitely not in America. The big differences are hard to overlook (governmental structure, history, health care, aboots) and often overstated but I’ve decided the details are what truly give the feel to a foreign land.

We’ll start with the flag. Just as an aside, I didn’t realize until about a month into my travels just how ugly the American flag looks in comparison with others internationally. I actually blurted it aloud when it struck me. American readers, take an honest and objective look at it for a minute shoving aside any pride you may or may not harbor for your country. Now nod your head with me that there’s not an ounce of simplicity in this busy mess of a rag. 50 stars? Come on! 13 stripes? Get out of town! I beg you to find another flag with similar digits of anything! There is no aesthetic to it what so ever. From a design perspective it’s a disaster and in consequence, it’s nearly impossible to scale effectively. In contrast, the Canadian flag, much like those in other corners of the world, is very simple and concentrated on one ever-present icon: the maple leaf. It’s anything but busy or distracting. It still carries symbolic significance (The red columns representing oceans and the middle representing the land) and the color scheme is definitely tasteful in my opinion. If the Canadian flag were a typeface it would totally be along the lines of Helvetica or something of the sort. The American flag? Maybe wingdings at best I digress. My point is that the Canadian flag is simple and scales impeccably. Leave out the red columns and you’ve got an easily recognizable symbol that can be squeezed in the tiniest of spaces. And squeeze it into the most impractical places Canadians do! Company logos almost always have a hidden leaf somewhere, kind of like Waldo, except not at all tricky. Nothing like Waldo actually (red and white aside). I think the most impressive sneaky leaf I’ve come across thus far was about 3mm small and imprinted on a piece of Wrigley’s gum. Crazy right?!

Even surfing the internet, one is constantly reminded of the country they’re in. I type in google.com and I’m automatically redirected to google.ca. wtf internet! I wanted my trusty .com! The same result happens with several other webpages I’ve encountered. This definitely reflects a certain pride Canadians have in their Canadian based companies within the web space. Obviously this extends well beyond the web and even more so on labels of products created here. It’s quite common to find clothing tags, products or logos sporting the leaf and accompanying Made in Canada.

Another small thing you wouldn’t necessarily think about are the warning labels on cigarettes known as the Surgeon General’s Warning in the States. It make sense that these would be different being that different body regulates the message for each country. Actually, before writing this post I wasn’t aware of this fact but it turns out Canada was the first country in the world to adopt mandatory warnings on cigarette packaging. +1 Canadia! What strikes me about these warnings are how big and how graphic they can be. The warning practically takes up more space than the branding label, is mandated to be printed in French and will often depict rotting teeth or cancerous tumors with an all too vivid color photo. Hilarious right? To make it even better, legislation is being pushed to force brands into a very vanilla black and white labeling scheme with no logos and only text. HA!

Though you’ll find most of the same sweets here as you will south of the border, there are a few differences I’ve come across. Even common candies produced by a Canadian company of the same name (e.g. Kit Kats by Nestle) have slightly different ingredients at slightly different ratios making them just a little bit… Canadian in flavor. Some candies are all together a different product. Smarties in the US are known as Rockets here. To make matters more confusing, Smarties here are like of a cheap, knock off m&m with a sweet and sugary shell. Bleh! No thanks. But while certain candies are a little gross and others just a little different but good in their own ways, the variety of candy you’ll find around this area is far superior to that of any grocery store or market in the respective American cities I’ve lived in. European chocolate like nobody’s business!

I could go on with small differences all night but I think I’ll conclude on sports, something I pay little to but still manage to notice in passing. It’s true you’ll find an oddball cricket game going on in parks during the summer. This sport perplexes me and I badly want to understand what’s going on. I’ll watch a game, decrypt it and get back to you sometime. I never got around to seeing a BC Lions game but Canadian football wanders a bit into strange territory too. Longer endzones, different sized ball, bigger field, altered goalposts, 3 downs, 11 players, et cetera. I’m told there’s a slightly faster pace to the game which puts more emphasis on skill players as opposed to the monstrous athletes of the NFL (complete wikipedia comparison). It goes without saying that Canadians are pretty hardcore about anything on ice. Hockey has predictably huge fan base but hilariously enough since it doesn’t get cold enough to easily maintain outdoor rinks on the coast, very few people actually play or even know how to skate! Hosers=posers. Also in the ice-loving category, it deserves mention that curling is one of the hottest events for the upcoming Olympics. I figured it would be a more obscure ticket; maybe cheaper or easier to land but I couldn’t have been wronger. Perhaps the best sporting nuance of them all is the Canuck version of bowling known as 5 pin. That’s right folks. Small ball (little bigger than a softball), five pins and three opportunities to hit them each frame. The scoring was goofy and I’m glad a computer did it for me. The whole experience blew my effing mind!

It’s almost too obvious that language, phrases, spellings and accents are a little different up here and in most ways they aren’t as different as you might expect. I intend to devote a post to speaking Canadian in the next short bit.

I hope this gives you a little taste of what it’s like to be around little reminders all the time telling you you’re definitely NOT in Kansas anymore. It’s nearly impossible to forget and somehow I like it that way.

My four year old daughter (almost five according to her) pointed at the flag and asked me, daddy, why do we have a flag? and why do you always tell me to respect it? I smiled at her through the rearview mirror and turning down the radio, I said, this country wasn’t always safe and free, many people had to sacrifice everything to make it a happy place for all the children, the flag was and is a symbol of that journey and those heroes. Summer (my daughter) had a look on her face that conveyed confusion with a hint of disinterest. I turned around in my seat, do you understand sweetie? no she said, but the flag has my favorite color so I still like it. Traffic started to move again over the 14th street Bridge and in the twilight (as if eavesdropping) I thought I heard the Potomac laugh.

The first time people used a flag was when they learned that they could use it to send messages. However, as time wore on, they found out that they could do so much more with flags aside from sending messages.

These days, people use flags for different purposes. They can use them for decoration, for props during production numbers, and even for the simple parade down the street. However, not all kinds of flags can be used for different purposes. You can’t use world flags for flag twirling events or for dance numbers. That would simply be disrespectful for the nations or organizations that are represented by the flags. What you can do is to fit your flag with the purpose that you have in mind. The first thing what you should consider would have to be whether it would be appropriate to use this flag or not. After all, you don’t want a lawsuit knocking at your door sometime after you use the flag in private.

If you find yourself at a loss because you won’t be able to find an appropriate flag, do not worry about it any further. You can have custom flags designed with your specific details. This way, you can be sure to have an appropriate flag for any occasion. All you have to do is to know what you want your flag to show. You will want to have a brightly colored or brightly decorated flag with trimmings for a parade or a flag twirling ceremony. On the other hand, you may want a brightly colored flag with a simple design if you want to use it as a boat flag. In another case, you may want to have a specialized flag that depicts the Jolly Roger or any famous icon if you’re going to a Halloween party.

The flags of different nations aren’t equal with regards to how many people know about them. It does

The flags of different nations aren’t equal with regards to how many people know about them. It doesn’t matter if they’re part of the G8 or if they are members of FIFA. All that matters is how much of its design will people remember even if they just catch a glimpse of it.

In most countries in the world, people recognize the American flag the most. This could be because of the hand that America has in terms of free trade and the like. They may also have heard of this because of the various involvements of the United States of America in world history. This does not mean that they consider that flag more important than other flags. This simply means that they have been more exposed to it compared to other flags. Moreover, they may attribute a lot of their thought processes with American culture and therefore with their flag as a result of free trade and increasingly Americanized systems.

World flags still do hold different values even if some are more memorable than others. In fact, they do stand equal in the eyes of the international community. This is largely due to the fact that people respect each flag as different representations of different cultures and traditions that give birth to different historical paths. While there may be leaders within the international community and power may not be equally distributed, they still maintain a clean-cut stance on the equality of respect afforded them no matter where they originate from or what they represent. Even non-state flags from different organizations are respected the same way.

Hulk Hogan got punched in the face by Ric Flair [who I effing love! WHOO!] the other day at some fake-ass press conference. I wasn’t really interested, and the fake blood didn’t do much except give me hope that Hogan’s face was actually marred.

Professional wrestling is falling off. I’ve noticed there hasn’t been much buzz about the “sport”. Unless you call Escape to Witch Mountain wrestling-related buzz. Was “The Rock” really that important? Did the name change to WWE kill the WWF? I wasn’t a conoisseur, but I miss the WWF.

Weren’t people more comfortable knowing that most rednecks/teenagers would be indoors on Monday nights? Football takes care of most mouth breathers itself, but wrestling was an added comfort blanket to do your grocery shopping on Monday nights or to take a nice walk without the fear of being harassed by people wearing cammo or those who still listen to ICP.

———–

When asked what professional wrestler you would be, who would you choose?

Most people will naturally assume that I’m going to pick Eddie Guerrero. Not for racist reasons, people know I’m a sucker for mullets from south of the border. But, Eddie Guerrero’s character was too “vato” for me sometimes. I’m not a Chicano. I can’t relate to someone who’s supposed to like Impalas and say “carnal” in a non-ironic way. Also, Eddie got big outside of the optimum age in which someone falls in love with the WWF, 6 – 12. Oddly enough, he got huge during the Era of Latin Fever circa 1999-2002. That era was great. Latinos could do no wrong. They pumped out dance hits and were free to cross the border. Not anymore. I miss you, Ricky.

I grew up watching Sting, Golddust (looks like Eminem on ecstasy), The Ultimate Warrior, etc. I liked the Undertaker a lot.

In fact, I always identified with the unlikeliest guy, Hacksaw Jim Duggan. He was the guy who finished people off with his 2 x 4. He held the American flag HIGH AND PROUD! HE WAS THE FUCKING MAN! You knew his “thumbs-up” and salute meant something.

Not only was he an agent in the ueber-American machismo which ruled entertainment in the 1980s and 1990s, he was everything Ronald Reagan and Herbert Hoover wanted wrapped in one neat bearded package. He was the rugged individualist that could build a house in two days alone. He loved his country, kicked ass, “hiyo”-ed like a hammerhead, hated immigrants and probably voted Republican.

I always saw Hacksaw as the manifestation of wrestling’s audience. I could see some schmo from West Virginia getting into the ring and acting exactly the same. He allowed us into the arena of people like Brett “The Hitman” Hart, who was so “mod” that he wore “Jubilee” style sun glasses throughout his career. He wrangled with Randy Savage –”Macho Man”! But, Jim was just Jim. He was some lovable lug, with a beer belly and a penchant for carpentry and carpentry material.

I was like Jim growing up. I loved the United States so much . My parents hadn’t broken me in, yet. I loved carpentry. I feel I’m naturally slated for that. And, I loved underdogs. I felt like one. He was one. He never really won anything. But, he was always in the mix.

It was nice to see some out-of-shape guy go to work on people who clearly cared too much about their bodies. He was All-American. I wanted to be All-American. He was essentially, Jim Duggan the Cable Guy starring in Delta Farce. Much like Larry the Cable Guy, Jim wasn’t so over the top to begin with. He was run of the mill guy within some lame-o tag team, but he, and the WWF, quickly realized that he needed to do more. He needed to get himself out there and push for the minds of people who just loved America and hated muscles.

In a sense, I miss the WWE. I don’t ever catch it. I might see a re-run in Spanish on Telelmundo, but I never actively seek it out. Football and soccer have overtaken my spectator sports life. It seems like MMA is taking its market share recently. It’s so brutal. You can’t help but watch. The one thing that the WWE will always have over UFC or WEC is that these guys have personality. They have pizazz. They have the acting bug, but also have the faces and bodies of henchmen. They are fun to listen and watch. Listen to Kimbo Slice speak and tell me you’re not terrified that he might be in your city soon. Listen to Triple H speak and you might want to sit down and have a beer with him. As menacing as he might try to seem, he’s just putting on an act. He’s wearing a suit. Shit, he can’t be serious.

I just wrote a post about fucking wresting…

I can’t be serious,

Sports equipment has always been centrally important to the sport that they are affiliated with. These are the items that could drive fans of a certain sport to actually participate in the game in one way or another. They may even drive enthusiasts to try to play the game itself.

There are a few outdoor sports that rely heavily on spotting mechanisms that allow the players to know where to go. For example: war games have different markers that tell the players about the different territories within the playing field. The same is true for golf. As this sport is played in a vast area, there is a need to plant markers on the target destination so as to guide players there. These markers take the form of golf flags and are placed directly on top of the hole. They are removed once a player reaches the green and prepares to putt the ball into the hole. These flags are centrally important as without them, it may be difficult to know where to hit the ball since you might not be able to see the hole due to the distance of it from the tee-off point.

Golf flags are not just materials to be used within the golf course. Some enthusiasts actually go to the extent of purchasing them as collector’s items. However, some also buy them to be used in their own private miniature golf courses or their own putting greens in their backyard. They do this because they want to feel like they are really in the golf course. They also collect these flags because they may look good as decorative items around the house.
