Send Harmonix your picks here.

Great feature that’s been a long time coming. If “Flagpole Sitta” and “At Your Funeral” aren’t available to download by November 1st, I’ll be very disappointed in the internet.

Obviously, user input isn’t the only necessary component in getting a song onto the game, so even if Harvey Danger gets the most votes in a landslide–i.e. justice is served–who knows if Harmonix will be able to get through enough red tape to actually bring the song to Xbox Marketplace and whatever it is that PS3 owners use (Netscape?).

We’ll have to wait and see how much of an impact this request engine can have amongst all of the legal and creative factors. No matter what, it beats the hell out of Guitar Hero’s Request a Song service which is just a drop down menu of Butt Rock’s greatest hits.

The song is Flagpole Sitta by a band called Harvey Danger. They people doing the dancing are from a New York new media company called Connected Ventures and, impressively, the single-shot video was filmed in just one take.

Dear Rabbit Family, I regret startling you with a loud “SHOO” this morning, as I was not

Dear Rabbit Family,

I regret startling you with a loud “SHOO” this morning, as I was not able to communicate the following points to you. Please take note:

1) I do not appreciate you eating my flowers. These are the same flowers I planted the previous evening in a rare free moment. Imagine my surprise when, upon looking out my front door very early this morning, I saw two little baby bunnies munching on my garden. This resulted in the shooing, which was well deserved, I think. What used to be a pretty, tall, perky plant with little pink flowers now looks like this:

Et tu, Bunny?

This situation has necessitated the drafting of this letter, in which we must address several points.

2) When we originally drew up the tenancy agreement last summer, it concerned a single rabbit. The agreement stated that this rabbit would be allowed to live in peace in our yard, having as its permanent residence a burrow under the shed in the backyard. We also allowed it right of passage through a number of holes dug under our fence, so that it could leave the yard whenever it desired. Given what I witnessed this morning, there are at least two additional occupants this summer, both of which are minor child-bunnies. This leads me to two conclusions: the original occupant was a girl bunny, and she made good use of the tunnels under the fence to roam the neighbourhood looking for boy bunnies. And found one.

3) Clearly the minor child-bunnies (are there only two? Surely more than that will violate the fire code regulations of our garden shed) have not been instructed in what “acceptable” behaviour in our yard is, otherwise we would not have had the incident this morning. While flowering annuals might be a tasty breakfast, the feeding and care of baby bunnies must fall solely to the parent bunny. Which leads me to my next point:

4) Room does not include board. We have respected your living space, and have very considerately not flooded your dwelling or filled up your escape tunnels with dirt, so please respect that you cannot eat our gardens with abandon. This goes double for the herb garden I just planted. In the spirit of cooperation, however, I invite you to dine on as many dandelion plants as you wish. We have an abundance of these in your vicinity. Also, one less hosta would not be a tragedy, so feel free to add those to your diet.

5) Have you considered moving? I’ve seen the gardens in our neighbourhood, and they are spectacular. Or perhaps it is time for the kids to venture out on their own.

6) Please take these points under consideration and take appropriate steps as necessary. We have no desire to take further action, which may include such measures as opening a door to the backyard when one of our cats is nearby or allowing the other landlord to enact his plan of luring you to the barbecue.

Sincerely,
Management

p.s. If you could hold still long enough for me to take your picture (especially the babies) that would go a long way to repairing our relationship.

Its really hard for me to think and choose a favorite song. I can really listen to anything i f I am in the mood. But one song that I catch my self listening to alot is Havery Danger-Flagpole Sitta. I remember being pretty young, and having a kick ass CD player. Jamming out to the song over and over again till the AA batteries would run out. It was one of those songs that no matter how many times you listened to it. It wouldnt get on your nerves.

Here is the song, but Youtoob is being gay, and not allowing me to find the original. But I did find something a little better. Also this has Bruce Campbell and is restasurred to be kick ass!

Youtoob is being gay and disabled embedding for this video. So you got to settle for the link and do it the old fashion way.

So when I went home Sunday to get my car fixed, my sister gave me a copy of Punk Goes Pop 2. It is AMAZING. I LOVE IT!! I have it in my car stereo, and I can’t stop listening to it. Here’s the line up:

What Goes Around…(Justin Timberlake) by Alesana
Apologize (One Republic) by Silverstein *
Baby One More Time (Britney Spears) by August Burns Red
When I Grow Up (Pussycat Dolls) by Mayday Parade
Over My Head (Cable Car) (The Fray) by A Day To Remember
Smooth (Santana) by Escape The Fate *
Ice Box (Omarion) by There For Tomorrow
Flagpole Sitta (Harvey Danger) by Chiodos
Beautiful Girls (Sean Kingston) by Bayside
See You Again (Miley Cyrus) by Breathe Carolina *
Disturbia (Rihanna) by The Cab *
Toxic (Britney Spears) by A Static Lullaby *
Love Song (Sara Bareilles) by Four Year Strong
I Kissed A Girl (Katy Perry) by Attack! Attack! *

These are all pop songs, with their original artist in the parentheses (obviously) and their new artist at the end. The ones with asterisks at the end are my favorite on the CD. Trust me, if you like these songs or if you like any kind of punk/rock music, you should check out this CD, it’s definitely worth it.

P.S.- On another note, I previously posted a note that asked “What if a gay man sang the song ‘I Kissed A Girl’?” Well, I don’t think the singers from Attack! Attack! are gay (I honestly don’t know), but they don’t change any of the words, and it’s amazing and hilarious all at the same time. I loved it. =]

“In The International, a gripping thriller, Interpol Agent Louis Salinger and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman are determined to bring to justice one of the world’s most powerful banks, the International Bank of Business and Credit (IBBC). Uncovering myriad and reprehensible illegal activities including money laundering , arms trading, and the destabilization of governments, Salinger and Whitman follow the money from Berlin to Milan to New York to Istanbul. Finding themselves in a high-stakes chase across the globe, their relentless tenacity puts their own lives at risk as their targets will stop at nothing – even murder – to continue financing terror and war.”

Stars: 4 & 1/2

I decided to go see this movie after reading a synopsis online. It is great, especially if you LOVE conspiracy theory-action-thriller type movies, which I do. It also makes you seriously take a step back and wonder just if this IS what our government and others are doing at the present time… Especially since this movie was inspired by the Bank of Credit and Commerce International banking scandal. I suggest seriously catching it in theaters because it is worth the money to see and I might possibly purchase this one on DVD, as I seldom purchase any movies LOL.

The most memorable quote from the movie that I can remember would be: (courtesy of www.imdb.com)

Louis Salinger: “Sometimes you find your destiny on the road you took to avoid it.”

Personally though, I think a lyric quote from Harvey Danger’s “Flagpole Sitta” might possibly say it best..

Before attending their concert at the House of Blues on Saturday, I was about as familiar with Bette

Before attending their concert at the House of Blues on Saturday, I was about as familiar with Better Than Ezra as are most people of my age. Prior to the show, my interaction the New Orleans-based power trio was pretty much limited to the presence of “Good” on the 1990s one-hit wonders playlist a friend and I created during college.

Before I go any further, let it be know that this not an indictment. We queued up this “Remember the 90s?” playlist every chance we got, and I still find a good excuse to listen to it at least once a month. And this is not part of some semi-ironic hipster-doofus creem dream, my friends. If you catch me drinking a High Life while grooving on “Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth (With Money In My Hand),” it is because I non-satirically enjoy both the Champagne of beers as well as Primitive Radio Gods’ most well know contribution to popular music.

While I don’t have much to say about the bands of varying musical inclination that showed up just long enough to drop these gems on the world before they went back to doing whatever it was they did before their heady, two-month amble around late night talk show stages and alternative radio stations, I’ll defend the brilliance of these chart-toppers until my last breath. Give me “Save Tonight” or give me death.

But as far as seeking out any of these artists when they hit the road? C’mon. “Good” is a fantastic song, but is it any better than “Pepper” or “Flagpole Sitta” or “Counting Blue Cars”? No one can really say for sure. So for me, that puts Better Than Ezra in about the same class as The Butthole Surfers, Harvey Danger, and Dishwalla: pretty much off my radar at almost all instances that I am not listening to their most well known songs during a leisurely game of caps or on the first leg of a road trip.

Even if I was the least bit curious, why would I want to ruin any of these masterpieces by doing something foolish like putting them in the context of a full album or live performance? That’s a high risk, high reward endeavor I never planned to undertake.

But as I have learned pretty much everyday since I got down here, few things go as planned in Big Easy. New Orleanians my age love Better Than Ezra. I’m talking “I have their demo EP on bootleg cassette” love. I’m talking “I’ve seen them about 13 times” love. I’m talking “Fuck Endymion, let’s I’m going to the BTE show at House of Blues” love. (And, yes, I’m talking “I affectionately refer to the band by a moniker” love).

With that in mind, I joined a large group of natives at the House of Blues on Saturday for Better Than Ezra’s annual Mardi Gras swoop through the Crescent City. And you know what? The put on an awesome show for a raucous crowd in an incredible venue. I still think they fit the classical definition of a “one-hit wonder,” but I realized that their one-hit was not just some sort of concession they were willing to offer in exchange for a moment in the sun. As I found out over the course of the night, “Good” was one of a long line of upbeat, accessible rockers that have kept the band going strong for over two decades, the only difference is that it was released as a single at the exact time it happened to perfectly capture the zeitgeist of the moment.

Better Than Ezra came off as a group upon which MTV and popular radio stumbled, not the other way around. Because unlike most of the other catchy tunes from the one-and-done groups I listened to in middle school, the song that sent this group into the stratosphere was pretty similar to the rest of their material, not a blatant attempt to make their sound more radio-ready. I realize this is just a veiled way of saying that all their fucking songs sound exactly the same, but their consistency is admirable, even if it comes at the expense of diversity.

I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather listen to 12 different variations on “Good” – a specimen to say the least – than sift through 90 minutes of post-grunge schlock-rock in a dingy club waiting impatiently for the Screaming Trees to launch into a spirited rendition of “Nearly Lost You,” a song that was their only hit because it is the only thing in their entire cannon that is actually tolerable. And I am sure some of the poor, uninitiated schmucks that got roped into a Blind Melon show during “No Rain” hysteria didn’t much care to watch Shannon Hoon warble around the stage in a heroin-induced stupor as wave after wave of heavy distortion and feedback rang their fucking bells when they expected a short set of mid-tempo toe-tappers performed by mandolin-wielding long-hairs and fat chicks in bumblebee costumes.

I will stop myself before this devolves into a missive on the relative artistic integrity and relative importance of every band to be featured on a Buzz Ballads compilation, because as I said before, taking too close a look at any of this is a zero sum game at best. I’ll just say this: Better Than Ezra game me exactly what I hoped for but had plenty of reason not to expect all. And it was good.

Happy Mardi Gras, everyone.

So here is another blast from the past … HARVEY DANGER

I was always into this song, but for some reason never saw this video, or knew the lead singer was a mix between Rivers Cuomo from Weezer and this guy who went to my high school named Alex Black.
In these tough economic times it’s important to remember that not all musicians have the amoun

In these tough economic times it’s important to remember that not all musicians have the amount of gold lying around in T-Pain’s mouth. Even worse, some of them do reach the mountaintop of success only to find it a cold, uninviting, oxygen-deprived place that can’t sustain them for more than say a couple of months or even weeks. Bands like Fastball, for example. Remember them? No? Well, I bet you remember half the lyrics to this song:

What about this one?

I’ll take the candy, please. If that doesn’t satisfy your Marcy Playground cravings, go here and read about a “minor controversy” between the band and the guitarist from the Butthole Surfers over some album artwork. But then get right back over here and sing this one into your imaginary microphones:

That’s actually Harvey Danger, not crazy Bruce Campbell. And did you know that the band released an album in 2005 as a free download on their website? Take that Radiohead! It was apparently even downloaded over 100,000 times in just two months if we’re to believe their Wiki page (and why shouldn’t we?).

These three bands may have never found repeated success and probably don’t run around town in Ferrari Enzos, but you know I think these three tunes are actually pretty damn good. I mean, I’d much rather hear these three songs than anything by Eve 6, Eagle Eye Cherry, or Semi-Sonic. It’s so easy to poke fun of a band for having a one hit wonder. There’s no bigger example of how easy this is than the existence of television shows dedicated to the sole purpose of poking fun at one hit wonders…on the very same networks that MADE them one hit wonders in the first place.

I remember hearing a DJ make fun of the Spin Doctors once and it was on a radio station that I know for a fact played the living crap out of the Spin Doctors when they were popular. You can’t have it both ways, dipnuts! It’s ridiculous.

So keep that in mind as we weather out the current financial crisis. Invest your emotions wisely in the music you hear on the radio that you choose to secretly admire, because this will later determine what you are and are not allowed to make fun of. Some songs, like the three examples here, are in fact good and it’s at no fault of the musicians that they became so dang popular so dang quickly. You try following up that success, hot shot. It ain’t easy. So, pick on something that truly sucks instead. Like Hinder.

More tomorrow…

God dammit is that not the most truthful lyrics I’ve herd in the past couple months. It’s from the song “Flagpole Sitta”… and I really thought the nineties produced really shitty music (excluding blink and nofx). This song has got one of catchiest songs I can actually realate to. Check it out:

Seriously, I think if I stoped thinking I’d be ok. Hell, look at the rest of the world. Are they thinking? No. And they’re doing alright. Fuck.
