It seems like only yesterday when Corner Edge asked me to create a web site design for one of their closest partners, GSSdb Solutions. It was 2005 and I was a freelance design consultant for Corner Edge, I designed the website pictured below based on the existing GSS logo and the business owners awe of the Hubble images. The banner image was a Flash animation of multiple space images fading in and out. Unfortunately the site never saw the light of web.

The original design for GSSdb site, New design coming soon!

Now it’s 2009 and I’m approaching my two year anniversary as a Corner Edge staff member, and, YeeHaa, the GSS site is back on the to do list. The new design will more prominently feature the bold Hubble images in a dynamic Flash interface.

Another site to look for coming up, CornerEducation.com. A site highlighting the Corner Edge development team’s versatility in the design and development of educational software and applications geared towards CME, sales force training and tutorial based education.

3D animation deals with electronically produced computer-generated 3D imagery used in motion graphics and digital special effects. In this case, the animator creates a design style or concept that tries to visually interpret and convey the required information using both new and traditional animation techniques.

The 3D animator will have to be well-acquainted with 3D animation applications and software, film and video production techniques, production processes, digital special effects, art and design movements and methodology, typography, styles of performance and dramatization, film and broadcast genres, technical scripting, health and safety regulations for the film and broadcast industry, and an understanding of budgeting and scheduling processes.

The job of the 3D animator is to design and realize original concepts, character and content creation. The animator, therefore, is responsible for devising and communicating creative ideas and accurate technical information. They have to provide the client with detailed estimates of costs, and work within the budget and schedule.

Each assignment will have different demands. So it is imperative that the animator should have a good knowledge and experience of animation software and broadcast processes, as well as a broad knowledge of technical scripting and digital technology used in broadcasting. The designer must be able to respond with innovative concepts and practical solutions for each assignment. The assignments may be of any kind, from designing a spinning top to re-creating mythical weapons.

To succeed in 3D animation, one must have a thorough understanding of computer-generated processes and applications to be able to achieve creative responses to design briefs within the restrictions of budget and deadline. He/she will be required to possess a passion for design, good communication skills and a good understanding of broadcast, special effects and character animation. Last but not least, he or she must enjoy working as a team member under pressure.

In addition to being able to demonstrate high standards of computer-generated imagery and animation techniques you will need to have a good knowledge of art and design movements and imagery, creative problem solving and innovation, and the understanding of how to deliver design concepts and processes.

The hard thing about creating a cartoon, is thinking up characters and how they behave. Making a sto

The hard thing about creating a cartoon, is thinking up characters and how they behave. Making a story about them is even harder, and the enviroment that they live in will be a huge challenge for me. I started off with a few drawings and threw a bunch away because i thought they were a bit in appropriate, but nevertheless i have a few odd characters in to keep the story going.

First off, its almost time for Christmas so I created an awesome little guy that looks like he’s a Christmas ornament. Its still a bit early to decided if thats how i want him to look, but for now i think he’s fine until i make adjustments.

Second Character i made was a ghost. He’s the ghost thats made up of toilet paper, 2-ply to be exact. I sorta got the glasses idea from my friend who wears the same exact glasses as the ghost in my cartoon. Throughout the story i think he’ll take off the glasses, i still cant decide whether he looks good or not. Pbhh..

The third character i created was an over-weight pinata (i dont know how to do that squiggly line over the “n” so you might have to pronouce it according to mexican reasons). I was gonna name it something spanish, like Eduardo or Paco, maybe even Pablo. He doesnt look like a pinata, possibly because i cant decided whether i want to add the confetti on his skin.

The last character i made, was a coconut, as inspired by the random coconuts i see here around the school campus. Fairly simple design, he has hair and everything, but i didnt add too much because he’d look like a mammoth than a coconut.

Of course since these characters are but concepts, you cant expect them to look that way when the cartoon is finally finished. I made a lot of sketches of characters, and i import them so i can vector them off and make them look simple. I dont have a scanner at the moment, and my friend’s scanner tis broken, so cameras can do the job.

BTW the character traits and bios will be made after i create a permanent character..

Next on my list is creating storyline that will fit these characters. But before all of that, i must find a theme for my cartoon. My cartoon will be based on strange humor and antics, with an on and off storyline. In short, its a cartoon with a point, and without a point. Sorta like that.

Then since i have a theme, i created a few ideas based on a few jokes and antics. Of course i wont reveal them to you here, you gotta watch the cartoon when im done. You can do the reverse form factor where you create a story and put jokes later, but i like the other way since it helps me enumerate the main points in my story, and i can build a sturdy plot.

FINALLY! The backdrop, to match my storyline. this by far is the most time consuming part, in my own opinion. When you build a cartoon (like mine), you cant have a small scene area where the character can walk off the stage, and then you gotta put another part of the picture so that it looks like the character is continuing his journey. Thats okay if you want, but for me, i want a continuous walk, where all the background elements pass by while he’s walking. So that means i gotta draw a wide picture and edit the ENTIRE THING to match my cartoon style, and including the laws of physics and geometry to get the lighting right and blah blah. So much work…

Heres a sample of a small backdrop i made, its not done, but i created it so i can show you what i meant by physics and geometry being applied to the cartoon.

Now notice the walls in the foreground and background. The shadows are curved arent they? The problem is that flat walls cannot have curved shadows. Did you catch that? Take note of the light post; the light is right in front of the post, yet the shadow of the post tends to go towards the wall, instead of going away from the light. Yeah, i know.. It’s tiring.

Well, i guess thats all i can show without showing too much. Most of this is still concept art, but hopefully i can get some real material next time, along with a story line.

This is the production blog of a new flash cartoon. Here I’ll update some people on the production of our cartoon

For now I’m gonna call it “Cartoon” because the title hasn’t been decided on..

INFO:

The Animation will be based on Flash Animation, using textured vectored characters, or simple shaped characters (whatever). I will be using Adobe products such as Flash CS4, Photoshop CS4, Illustrator CS4, Soundbooth CS4 etc., all that you need to animate the character. Of course animation will take time since it takes a while to get the characters moving, and voices and stuff into effect. Plus I have a bootload of homework on my hands so hopefully I can at least finish a few videos by next month. I’ll update this blog when something new happens. Until then, peace.

Flash Animation is an amazing way to turn your static images into a picture with a movement. It is an animated film created using Adobe Flash or a similar, animation software. However with the growing number of Flash Animated Television series, countless television commercials, and award winning online shorts in circulation, Flash Animation is enjoying a renaissance.

Flash Animation has Evolved

Flash was initially developed by Macromedia, and later acquired by the software giant Adobe in April, 2005.

Earlier, artists employed limited animation or cut-out animation when creating projects intended for web distribution. This allowed artists to release shorts and interactive experiences as well.

Some poorly presented Flash Animations have had jerky natural movements, auto-tweened character movements, lip-sync without interpolation, and abrupt changes from front to profile view. However now-a-days most Flash films are created using only vector-based drawings which often result in a somewhat clean graphic appearance.

Creation of animation using Flash is easier and less expensive than traditional animation techniques, the amount of time, money and skill required to produce this project depends upon the chosen content and file.

Flash Animations are usually distributed by way of the world-wide-web, often referred to as internet cartoons, online cartoons or webtoons. Web Flash Animations may be interactive, and often created in a series. Internet distribution is much easier and less expensive than television broadcasting, where many web sites provide free hosting, however some amount of technical knowledge is required to create a notable work with this software.

How to Use Flash Animation?

There are many online companies these days providing you with these services. Group D.M.T. is one such company I have come across who are capable of giving you a highly professional job.

You can demonstrate complex processes, services, or products in action using Flash Animation using their help. You can convert your company’s logo, or other graphical elements into Flash Animation.

Flash Animation is an excellent and easy way to show your products and ideas that are hard to comprehend. We are all wanting visitors onto our web site, and getting to know what we can do. Flash Animation is able to make good marks for your presentations, and can very effectively be utilized.

Flash animation can bring movement and interaction to design. Those pesky pop up ads aren’t fun to look at while they’re moving all over your screen, but you have to admit — they get your attention. Here is ten different usages for flash. These web sites show how flash can enhance user interaction coupled with great design.

1. Click on the different categories to journey through “zunes” world. http://www.zunejourney.net/

2. This site is not only incredibly designed, but fun to interact with and click through.

3. This company website proves their creativity by showing what they’re all about. http://www.sensisoft.com/ The constantly changing background is a different twist.

4. While this was loading I wasn’t sure what was going on, but I realized they have created an external swf. to present their portfolio “under the sea” style. http://www.infinitcolours.com/

5. This graphic design artist decided to transform his portfolio page into a laboratory. http://www.arihirvonen.com/

6. Another portfolio site, but this time — in outer space. http://www.mattwiggins.net/

7. With flash, users have the ability to interact with objects on the screen. Here it is more like a game, but it’s a good example of the usability of flash.http://patterngame.com/linesuperfollow.swf

8. Any Jackson Pollock fans? This one is like the last, it lets the web user do something unique by interacting.

9. A graphic and web design company turns their web site into an outdoor scene: http://www.v5design.com/

10. Zign marketing — on an island. http://www.zign.com.br/

Very very unique way of promoting your song. I ended up playing the entire song again, just to experience the flash animation and the unique website interaction.

Oni Buchannan’s work echoes the cut up method of Byron Gysin. The cut up method, a form of oulipo is

Oni Buchannan’s work echoes the cut up method of Byron Gysin. The cut up method, a form of oulipo is nothing new in the world of literature. In fact, Buchanan often uses oulipo in her poetry. She has written many poems in prisoner’s constraint and text message language. Oulipo is important to Buchannan’s work because the very style in which the poetry was written determines where it ends up. However, her innovation to the old method is in the flash animation she uses to make the cut up letters come to life and float down the page. This allows the reader to see the actual process, not just the result of the process. By ditching the scissors and electronically cutting up the words, Buchannan creates a new medium of work. The animation becomes a part of the poetry, a conveying a message stronger than the words themselves.

Marshall McLuhan asserts in his article “The Medium is the Message” that the medium is what is important in creating a relationship with the audience. He argues that it is not the content, but the mode of writing that is the essential to communication to the reader. In this article, he mentions cubism as an example of how the medium shapes the message. The new medium, a painting broken up and reassembled, gives the painting multiple layers of meaning.

The message of cubism as a new medium was to abandon the traditional single perspective way of thinking and understanding. Similarly, kinetic poetry, the medium used by Oni Buchannan in writing “The Mandrake Vehicles” breaks existing boundaries adds a new aspect to the work that allows the reader to interpret more from the poetry. The animation is a type of image shapes the way we interpret the content. Like McLuhan argues, the content is not the main message I take away from “The Mandrake Vehicles”. The message lifted from this medium is similar to that of cubism, it gives us more than one perspective of the work as a whole, the animation gives new meaning to the words.

Picasso, the creator of cubism, recognized his work as not only a conveyor of message, but as a language. He essentially combined paint, canvass, and cut up images and even some words to create a new language that speaks to us as the audience in a way that has not been achieved by any other artist. Check out this slide show that illuminates Picasso’s innovative language. Similarly, Cathy Park Hong’s poetry creates a new language from Spanish, English,Korean, and even made up words. Through her new language, her medium of amalgamation, Hong sends a message of global peace and understanding. So how does this relate to Oni Buchannan and “The Mandrake Vehicles”?

In Kress’ “Reading Images”, he says that images contain meanings equivalent to words, and in some instances are more important than the words themselves. Just ask Picasso. He and Kress seem to be on the same page. So if images can be considered a form of communication, then animation can also be used to convey messages.Oni Buchannan’s unique mixture of text, the cut up method, and flash animation creates a language that actually echoes the language of the internet itself. The internet as a technology has emerged as a language, by conveying messages by mixing images, videos, and text . The fact that this poetry is interactive and multi-layered is the message Buchannan’s aiming to send. The title to Carr’s article poses the question “Is Google Making us Stupid?” To that, I say no. It is making us innovative. Yes, the way we read has changed, but the internet (and Oni Buchannan’s poetry) allows us to make the most of our new multi-layered and interactive world.

As the internet expands it continues to push us in new directions. As a result, innovation of design

As the internet expands it continues to push us in new directions. As a result, innovation of design and delivery of content is in high demand. Flash animation is one of the ways we see this, both in online advertising and web sites.

These two web sites are a great examples of this innovation: www.zunejourney.net, and wonder-wall.com. They both have an unique way of interacting with the user, while still being extremely well designed.

So, what do you think about these uses of flash animation? How do you think this will affect advertising and the way we interact with web sites? It is exciting to think of the possibilities, but do you think animations will change things in a negative way?

MY TAIL

Cloud, Comet, and I were in Folly Beach Town to R and R. We had just completed a string of performances with the National State Fair circuit. We were booked for Europe for the New Year so we retreated home to score some new scenes above the great Atlantic Ocean and land below sparked our creative tensions.
It was at last, a day for fun, Halloween Day, clear and bright. Children were out on the shore in their ghost and pumpkin and witching hour do’s. No zombies. Too early in the day, but not too early for some howling. And it was not mine.

I MAY need some friends.

OCTOPUS SCARES AND FRIGHTS!! The Headlines Blare!
Octopus screamed. He boomed up and down just below the surface of the great Atlantic. BubbubbbBbbooomm. Octopus was a well known creature about Folly Beach, and he always put on his sea show, Halloween afternoon. We had all been there on the beach, first frolicking and now waiting for him to finish getting dressed. Apparently he was taking his time, tying the traditional black seaweed strands onto each of his tentacles and painstakingly applying the orange neon glow paint, dug down deep from his dark bottom floor, to his suction cups. Sponge Bob’s sunny world was many seas away.
Guess the unusual howls and bbbbabooms were no more than Octopus laughing as he muffled about the the water. OR were they more? The Crabs were throwing the annual All Hallow’s Eve Party and the beach was humming with their scurrying preparatory movement.

I WILL need some friends.

The headlines were coming fast and furious over the Folly Beach Loudspeaker.
In the distance I could see UFO distributing her moon dust pies to the townspeople. UFO always came back for the day before All Saints, and she always stayed the night with me. Ahhhh Halloween at the beach. The most pleasant weather, the brightest stars, this year Venus was gorgeous, and the wind was slightly wailing moving the howls around. Even UFO fluttered.

Will I need friends?? YEEEESSSSSSSS.

EVEN THE CRABS SENSE SOMETHING AMISS!!!!

Back on the shore, Comet sprayed a bit of fire towards Octopus Way, the section of the Beach Guaranteed for Life for Octopus. Octopus and Comet had been friends since 1633 BC and their history of achieving mischief was well known on Folly Beach. That is why the beach had come to be known as Folly. But for now, it had become QUIET. I took time to scan the skies. Cloud was gone, as usual for an appearance with The Ice Parade Stars. She had choreographed an act called “The Spook Cirrus Streak.” On Halloween she preferred creating her own mischief. I startled back.

Yipeeeeessss.

The Crabs, who were to throw the evening party, were packing up their black urchin capers, their black stick eye canapes, and their makeshift cafe. The stick eyes smelled delicious. Hope this was not the end of the food, I thought feeling a bit amiss.
Perhaps a nap is in order. The Triple C troupe WAS here for rest and recuperation and UFO would be ready for a restful afternoon.

I want friends!!!

BUBBA FISH HAS A FUNNY PITCH!!!!!

Darkness was on the far eastern horizon. The town lit up. Bubba Fish sounded the horn for OCTOPUS but it was quirky toot, like a taint of vile medicine had made it’s way into his pipes. Trick or treating SHOULD commence. But we never began without Octopus.

THE WAVES GROW ERRATIC!!!!!!

Inside the beach cottage I stretched my legs. UFO wrinkled her hands and located her gift for me. The bar medal encrusted with star stones that she had recently received for valorous service in one of the Sirius Star Wars was a treasure. She had won many and I cherished them, which UFO knew, which is why UFO always brought one on her Halloween visit.
On the ocean, waves waved but did not crest. The eastern sky was crystal black. Comet was no where in sight. The crabs remained hidden. An unusual light was ascending over the lagoon black horizon. The children were afraid. The waves grew. OCTOPUS, are you OK???

Please BE a friend!!!!

CLOUD RETURNS !!!!!!!

Quickly UFO and I headed outside. What had been a perfect sunset was being altered by a putrid pink light rimming the lagoon- like horizon. My Goodness, it looked like Cloud being stretched from one end of the universe to the other. What a funny thought I thought. No odd. Not funny. Odd. It was past time for Octopus’s Act and the sky was rapidly changing and Cloud was coming back. Coming Back Huge!!!!!!!
OH MY!!!!!!!!
OH MY

OH MY

I was moving forwards and backwards and at the same time. UGGHGGH. I am sick. Those crabs never leave me alone. Their taunts were sounding more like “HELP ” than Ha ha. PLEASE TOWN, it is time for the Fun to Commence. I leapt.
Why –I am in shape!!!!!!

I found myself in the middle of a humongous pink intestine- like pinnacle where I was handed a treat, or was it a trick, or was it a teat? No matter, One CRUNCCCCCHHH into the black stick canape and Cloud collapsed back into her Cirrus Stratus Spook costume, the one she had painstakingly made for the for the All Saints Day Ice Parade Stars and bemoaned, “I’ll never make it now.”
I said, “Octopus.”
UFO said, “Comet.
Somebody said, “The Fleas?”

done<ins style='text-decoration:none;'>

Naaaaah. Who was the culprit who had conspired to get Cloud home Once and for All on Halloween? Well they had failed. UFO said, Let’s go Cloud! UFO looked back at me lying in a mess of crabs. “Sorry to leave you like this !” I watched UFO and Cloud Vanish. I would truly miss sharing the black stick eye canape at midnight with UFO, as was our custom on All Saints Eve.
I had to get going. For the childrens’s sake, I jumped into the ocean and swam furiously for Point North and as I suspected, BlowFish was madder that a matador, tied up at the dock. I gave him a knife. Then I made the turn to see what had turned Folly Beach Town into Howl Town and currently, upside down. No it was not Hurricane, although legend says that the wind was as wicked that night and it pulled me in like in like a whip, and it whipped up every moon dust pie in town, and all of the children lost them that year to somewhere universal. Still I must admit in the end that this was my most memorable Halloween ever.
As I knew I would, when I wound around the bend I encountered Octopus, of course laughing. Blowfish, now free and fast, spewed out a cape of vile medicine that flew over Octopus and then Comet. The Air Gun used to infuse Cloud was for the time being a thing of the past. Both said, Happy HaLLOWEEN. All I said was, The Show Must Go On.

Octopus quickly made the turn back to point South and his final act was furious. Comet sat demurely on the beach, blackened by Fish Medicine which helped keep the Crabs at bay and I just gazed heavenward. Furiously now, children, go on and get ready and don’t miss another howl, or UFO, or moon dust pie. Love Jeba The Hound.

Image Editing is a popular device which professional photographers have been using for a long time.

Image Editing is a popular device which professional photographers have been using for a long time. Every picture is equal to a thousand words, so you should be very careful how you present this. A thousand words right, or wrong, make a big difference.

Better is a Wiser Choice

An improved presentation is definitely better. These digital technologies have now made it possible to improve upon the weaknesses of the original shot, giving them a second chance.

Tradition photo retouching has taken huge strides with the onset of digital photography, and computer image processing. Plenty of software are now available in the market giving different versions and a wider choice on Image Editing Techniques.

Manipulate, Enhance, and Transform Images

Clipping paths are very useful in segregating the desired objects from the background. This will help in highlighting the object of the image, and can also be placed onto different and more subjective backgrounds.

Color Correction Masks is sometimes very essential for images. Apart from enhancing the impact of the photograph on the viewer, the original also depends upon the availability of light at the time of shooting the photograph.

This is able to tone the right color shades to the subject of the photograph rectifying the deficiencies of the original photograph. The color correction enables the picture to generate a better appeal, and hence desired by most professional photographers.

Soft Masking, Alpha Channel, or Alpha Composting is a channel/process used in graphic software to combine an image with the background to create an appearance of partial transparency. This is helpful in rendering different image elements in separate passes, and then combining the resulting multiple 2D images into one finished image.

Color Correction and Retouching is literally a balancing act. This can be helpful in highlighting details from the shadow sections, adjusting contrasts, bringing out details, brightening the eyes, whitening the teeth, body slimming, removing blemishes and wrinkles, hence balancing the color of the objects and/or areas.

Make Hay While the Sun Shines

Your photography will never be the same again. There are many sites offering you these services at affordable costs. One such site Digital Media Tech is doing a good job.

Most, if not all the images you see on print, or on screen have gone through various processes to look the way they appear now. We would only be wiser to make use of these techniques when they are available to us at affordable costs.
