Flashpoint by Geoff Johns
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was the best comic book story I ever read. Absolutely great story arc by Geoff Johns and fantastic art by Andy Kubert. The story is nicely paced and you can enter this arc without a lot of previous knowledge about the universe it’s set in. I wanted to read it in one sitting but made myself pause so that I could make it last. I’ve done that with only a few traditional books, so this was a truly special piece for me.

In the 70s and 80s, when I first was reading comic books, I was a Marvel guy. I didn’t like the DC line of characters, stories or artists. The stories were quaint and simplistic, the characters two-dimensional, and the art looked more like it belonged in the Sunday funny pages not in a monthly trade book. Marvel ruled that period with strong characters (e.g. Fantastic Four, the X-Men and Daredevil) and great writers (Byrne, Claremont, etc.).

But when I turned to Marvel in 2012, ironically just after I sold my original comic collection, I felt like I was in an alternate universe. Marvel has become the DC of the 70s/80s and DC has become even better than Marvel was at its storytelling heights. Flashpoint (2011), Justice League (2011+), Batgirl, Aquaman and The Movement are truly great graphic stories. Flashpoint even exceeds my previous favorite story, Marvel’s Dark Phoenix arc of the original X-Men (issues #129-138).

I got back into comics partly for fun, partly for nostalgia and partly to help drive my own writing. I’ve got a great story I’m working on now that would work wonderfully as a graphic novel. The pacing of comic stories also helps keep me focused on each scene I write of my own. I have an artist in mind but will get the story more developed first.

The only negative I can think of for Flashpoint is that it was originally published in five segments over a period of five months. I would have killed DC if I had to wait that long for this story to unfold!

The term “flash in a pan” derives from the time of Flintlock muskets. Flintlock muskets

The term “flash in a pan” derives from the time of Flintlock muskets. Flintlock muskets used to have small pans to hold charges of gunpowder. An attempt to fire the musket in which the gunpowder flared up without a bullet being fired was a “flash in the pan.” The phrase continued during the time of the Californian Gold Rush of the mid 19th Century, when prospectors who panned for gold supposedly became excited when they saw something glint in the pan, only to have their hopes dashed when it proved not to be gold but a mere ‘flash in the pan’.

I fear that some Christians are nothing more that a “flash in the pan.” They appear to be “christian” but upon further investigation they are no more Christian than a gunpowder flare with no bullet. This is not said to be negative but an encouragement for all Christians to take a deep internal look at themselves. Christianity is all about self-reflection and looking unto Jesus for life eternal. Is everyone going to be at the same point in their spiritual lives? No. Is everyone going to have the same knowledge of the word of God? No. Is anyone ever going to be perfect? No. Jesus is not looking for perfection but for a person who has been purified by Jesus, a person for His own possession, Zealous for good deeds (Titus 2:14, 15).

We can do one of three things in our Christian lives. One being correct the other two not being correct. We can try to rely completely on the grace of God to save us without us doing a thing for it or to remain in His grace. Second, we can think that it is all about us and our “works” and fail to rely upon the grace of God to save us. Finally, we can allow God to save us through His grace by our Faith (Ephesians 2:8). What does that look like? It looks like Paul’s words in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me; and the life that I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Because of the grace of God and our faith and trust in Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, we do the works that God has given us to do in Him before the beginning of time (Ephesians 2:10).

We cannot have faith without works or our faith is dead (James 2:26) and we also cannot have works without faith (Romans 14:23). These are not works that we come up with but ones God has come up with. The proper faith will allow a person to do the commands of Christ, for Jesus himself said that you cannot claim to love Him and not do His commands (John 13:35). If we do not have the proper faith working alongside God’s grace which allows us to no longer live for our fleshly desires but allows Jesus to live through us; then we are nothing more than a “flash in the pan,” which is just as worthless as a flash of gunpowder with no bullet or a mere “flash” of something shiny but not being gold.

Jesus wants our hearts and our dedicated lives to Him. Let’s stop living for self and begin to live for Jesus! Think on these things.

For this assignment we where required to animate a short story between 20-30 seconds long.
We had to use illustrator to design our characters and flash to animate them. The theme we where
assigned was breaking up.

I enjoyed this as it reflected the graphic novel that we designed in a previous assignment. At first I was a bit anxious while trying to decide a story to choose as I found this task difficult whilst creating my graphic novel, this however was fine as we where informed that we where allowed to use the design and story that we have already created. This made this project even more attractive too me as it gave me the chance to bring my still animation to life. I found this assignment to be fun as I like to use flash and illustrator (even though at times both can be extremely tedious at times). I wanted to create a story that begins in black and white and then transitions into colour as the narrative develops.

During creating my animation, there was a few things that I had to change. Some where because I did not like the aesthetics of the design, others because to be honest I did not allocate enough time to the project as other modules took a lot more of my time. One of the changes that I made was the desicion to change my design from transitioning from black and white to colour, to just being fully in colour. I felt that my design looked better in full colour as I could add more detail, the wooden floor as an example. I feel that in future I could label my work better as I spent a fair amount of time searching for items in my library. Another issue that I would like to improve on would be how to control the audio within my level. Over all I really enjoyed this task and being able to what was once a still ‘comic strip’ like design to a moving animation. I feel that in future projects of this type I should allocate more time so that I can add more detail and really show what I am capable of in both illustrator and flash. I was happy with what experience I was able to bring to the project and also happy with learning new skills, such as the bone tool as I have never used this before.

White Balance, the two words that can cause major confusion, but it is very simple. Let me talk you

White Balance, the two words that can cause major confusion, but it is very simple. Let me talk you through it.

On most cameras DSlR or compact you are given the choice to change white balance. In simple terms, white balance will control the overall colour of your image. You may have taken a shot indoors before and it came out an orange coloured very warm looking shot. This maybe because your white balance wasn’t set to incandescent. There is an auto setting of cause but like most autos it doesn’t do very well, so train yourself to set the white balance right for your shooting condition . Here is a guide but check your instructions and some may differ
Incandescent. Inside with bulbs

Fluescent. under strip lights

Flash. Well do I need to say but when you use flash

Sun. Again in the sun

Shade. When there is cloud cover.

A good rule is this, if you shoot in raw keep your camera set in “flash” and change in Photoshop as this will keep your shots consistent. You can batch edit in Photoshop so its quick. If you are just starting out train your mind and keep changing as white balance can also add a really cool effect.

If you have any questions just post them or send direct and I will aim to reply by the following day.
Good luck guys and keep shooting.

Beaches present us with excellent opportunities to capture amazing digital photographs. Their vast natural beauty, impressive hues, and fascinating patterns of light are great sources of inspiration. Unsurprisingly, some consider a beach to be a dream destination for a family vacation, honeymoon or an intimate get-away. Here are some tips to help you capture more exciting and creative beach photographs.

Gear

When photographing at the beach you’ll need protective gear; a UV filter, camera bag, and plastic housing if possible, to keep sand and water out. Cleaning cloths are handy more often that you’d expect. A polarizing filter is very useful as it helps cut down on flare and improves the color of water and the sky. A separate, powerful flash device, or a circular reflector are very useful. If you plan on shooting in black & white, then you might want to invest in a red 25 filter to increase the drama of the sky by increasing the contrast of the clouds.

Time of the Day

Once the sun has started to set, return to the beach with a tripod to take images of the sky and sea. The water looks calm and the sunset will captivating and vibrant colors. Place the camera on a sturdy tripod because of the lower light levels, and set the mode dial to TV or S (Shutter-Priority) mode. Select a shutter speed of 2 seconds to begin with. You may need to use an ND (Neutral Density) filter to reduce the amount of light hitting the camera, and this way the camera will allow you to have a longer shutter time. Use your camera’s self-timer or a cable release to take the photo with absolutely no blurring.

Capture Enjoyment

Being at the beach is all about fun, so make sure you capture it. Get your friends or family to run on the sand; set the mode dial to M (Manual mode) and use a shutter speed of at least 1/500th of a second to freeze the movement. Remember to protect your camera and lens from all the sand; always use a clear UV filter to protect the lens and electrical tape around the area where the lens fits onto the camera body.

Try Shooting in Black & White

A strong sun will produce a high contrast B & W image, because of the strong shadows and light areas. A polarizing filter and a red filter will bring out the contrast in the image as well as reduce flare. Let the camera choose the correct shutter speed. Use an external flash to fill in any dark spots. B & W photography is great for making a photo better if the sky is overcast and dull. The result is an almost white background making it perfect for beach portraits. B & W beach images help to create the mood of a timeless/more artistic shot.

Taking your camera to the beach can be an awesome, but be sure to take the right protective measures. You can capture amazing shots on a bright sunny day, an overcast day or even when it’s raining. The strong sun lets you use fast shutter speeds and small apertures for sharp photos that stop all motion. The vivid and varied colors at the beach add excitement to all your photographs. Don’t forget the appropriate filters and equipment to enhance your artistic palette. Since you’re nowhere near a power source be sure to bring enough batteries and memory cards! Experiment with black & white photography while you’re there. The water will show up as a deep shade of grey in most cases, which can make a great background. Being residents of the great city of Los Angeles, all of us at Digital Imaging Center are no strangers to beach trips with friends and family. Those memories will stay with you for many years to come, and many, many more with photographs to remind us. Hanging around your home or custom photo gifts like the ones we’re known for. Precious moments can happen in a flash, and hopefully your shutter speed will react accordingly ;)

I tumbled backwards, coming to sit side-saddle on the dusty, brick floor that had gone a thousand years undisturbed, causing a surprising pillow of soot and sand to pout out from beneath my thinned, feather-weight frame. Looking down to see my legs, my pants strung about my ankles after they’d loosened and fell during the time I was fixed to the Credoroium, I could see how frighteningly gaunt they were. It was as though I had not been fed nor exercised in a decade and it felt likewise, the surprising carry-on weight of my head pulling me forward, resisting my body’s urge to slump back in the opposite direction in a desperate bid to die.

Hudson wouldn’t let that happen, and neither would I. I struggled to keep my eyes open, to fixate them anywhere around the tomb, now a-glow with orange, the embers accelerating around me faster and faster. Concentrating on anything moving or otherwise proved impossible, so I started small and tried to invoke an image of what I must’ve looked like – to scare me, to summon that want to stand and work out a way to reverse the curse, and, all-forbidding, not to convince myself of defeat, or fall to rest and never wake, which I felt would soon be the case.

In my mind, gaunt was a matter of fact. I saw my eyes, the space around them bruised dark, outlining the skeletal cavity in which they are set. The light from the ember-like fire that spins around me, pacing audibly fast, slightly revealing the contours of eye-balls behind my closed lids, but nether-the-less,their darkened state making my head look much more like an empty, sovereign skull than one with skin or muscle stretched over to conceal its unsightly macabre. Taking in to account that I could feel my lips cracking, and that I had not been able to shut my jaw, I envisioned my teeth as yellow to keep with the exaggerated image I’d created. I imagined my hair thinning and falling out. It all came together as horror. There was no certainty to any of this, of course, but the thought was successful in waking me, and, thoroughly disturbed by myself, I’d found that desire to fight.

As I pushed off the ground my wrist suffered a severe fracture. I hadn’t felt it, at least, I was not pained by it, but I knew it had happened. Once I was erected, I glanced at it to see the bone had broken through my paper skin.

As a hobbyist when it comes to game development, I have a pretty low budget for software purchases (about $0.00 USD). To that end, I often find myself searching for free (monetary free, not necessarily Richard Stallman free) software to ease the burden of telling billions of tiny electrical switches how to act. I’ve just thought of a few and thrown them into this tiny little list:

IDEs

Eclipse. Eclipse is the de facto free Java development environment. I’ve not used very much JVM in my personal work, but I’ve used it in my professional career and Eclipse was a pretty welcome leg-up.

Code Blocks. Code Blocks I’ve even used less than Eclipse, but I know it exists. If you want to do C++ stuff and don’t want to pay for Visual Studio, here you go. I think I had a roommate who used it once.

FlashDevelop. Don’t want to shell out the big bucks for Adobe’s Creative Suite just so you can make the next great Flash game? And you’re an all around good bro who refuses to pirate software? Fear not! FlashDevelop was made using Adobe’s free command-line Flash compilation tools. While not exactly as wonderful as the actual Flash IDE, it’s better than an empty bank account. Sadly, it’s only available on Windows.

Text Editors

Vim. A classic. If you skipped the IDEs section because you manage your entire project via command-line, this is the editor for you.

Notepad++. Pretty awesome. It’s extensible so you can write all your own tools and syntax highlighting stuff. I haven’t done any of that myself, but I’m sure there’s a community for it. And it’s better than regular Notepad. Again, only available on Windows. (Port it, guys! It’d blow TextEdit out of the water!)

Image Editing Tools

MS Paint. Okay, okay. Not 3rd party and not technically free. But still. When I’m making all my pixelly, retro sprites, I load up the ol’ paint. The older the OS, the better. None of that Paint.NET stuff for me.

GIMP. This guy is one of my favorites. I don’t want to pay for Photoshop. I don’t want to get the low-quality free version of Photoshop, either. This is sort of like Photoshop’s gimpy step-brother, but it gets the job done.

Web Development Environments

node.js. Okay, I don’t really know much about node.js except that I see the term get thrown around a lot. In fact, I only recently learned that it’s sort of a standalone JavaScript environment that runs without a browser. And that it’s built on top of Chrome’s JavaScript interpreter.

Chrome. When testing out web stuff, Chrome is really the cat’s meow. Hit F12*? Oh, there’s my developer console. Oh, wait. I can click the Console tab and type interpret JavaScript on the fly and see what broke in my code? Yeah. It’s the best.

*Unless you’re using a Mac like me at the moment. Gosh, those function keys. They wonky.

Well! That’s all I can think of at the moment. If I come across any more or suddenly remember a vital tool for my success, I’ll be sure to update this page. Or better yet, save all of my epiphanies up for a ‘Some Helpful Software Round 2′ Post.

I want to see if I can get the MakeyMakey to use the light sensor from the Arduino start up kit

I want to see if I can get the MakeyMakey to use the light sensor from the Arduino start up kit – it might be a better way of tracking someone’s cycling speed. But I initially struggled just to get the Arduino not to just switch it on all the time. I now understand what was said in the last meeting about the resistance being too low! It didn’t make sense to me before.

I was hoping that I could connect the headers on the MakeyMakey to the headers on the Arduino, so it could connect the circuit when the Arduino program told it to. But simply connecting it would just switch it on, even when I told the pin digitalWrite(mPin, LOW), or whatever. Just being connected to an output pin was enough to switch it on.

Turns out, instead of switching pins on or off, you can switch them from INPUT mode to OUTPUT mode, to switch it off/on instead. I know you guys are all more experienced with electronics than me, and can probably see a million easier ways of doing this, but I was happy to have implemented what I have learnt so far and solved a problem in my own way. The reason why I am doing this is because I understand how to get the Makey Makey to talk to Flash, but the tutorial on Arduino and Flash is beyond me – if anyone knows how to do that, I would really appreciate some guidance.

I have to say, connecting up wires on that breadboard is kind of addictive…

I’ve only tried this out with the button, but I know how to do the light sensor circuit too, so I think I can put those two things together…

Yesterday, I started work on the first game I plan to create from my backlogged list. Now without giving too much away of the game details I am going to attempt to outline what problems I ran into and hopefully this will help some coders/programmers out there.

So I was there making this game, I inserted some API, made a simple start screen with ‘Play’ ‘How To Play’ ‘About’ buttons and a title. Linked this pages to the relevant places. Then started to create the main game, this is where I ran into some issues.

In my game I have planned for a map, with levels on. As you complete levels you unlock the next, very simple mechanic. However, I thought I’d create the code for the level before the map (as with this type of game I’ve never create an engine like it before). So I started coding this level engine, using various techniques to shorten down the code and make it run efficient and easy tot understand (as this project will span a few weeks so I need to be able to quickly understand what it all means).

Now I’ll explain my problem. I am using Flash to program this game. Now with Flash you have an inbuilt function called onEnterFrame. If you are unfamiliar with this function I shall explain it in the next paragraph, if you know what it is feel free to skip the following paragraph.

Flash works with frames, as it is an animation program also. Think of a flip book, the frames are the pieces of paper. Now this function (onEnterFrame) will run the code you place inside the function every time it ‘enters the frame’. Now if you running at 12fps (frames per second) this code runs 12 times a second.

So I had called a function inside the onEnterFrame function which loaded the assets (objects) needed for the level, however as it running this 12 times a second it kept making my program lag out and not respond. After a while of this, and because I have had a break from game programming, I reached the solution “Bugger, I’ve forgot how to program…”.

Now I reached this state because I got stressed at a situation I was in, I was deep within the program (so to speak) and so couldn’t see any solution. Now if you find yourself in a similar situation, the best solution I have found is to walk away. Take a break for an hour or two, I guarantee the solution will just pop into your head once you’ve got away from the task for awhile. It happens to me all the time.

Este bichejo se coló en la habitación. No pude evitar fotografiarlo.

Hey, what’s goin’ on everybody? So I’ve kept this under wraps for most of today and I’ve finally decided to unveil it. This video is something I’ve been wanting to try out for awhile now and I finally have had the time to do it.

I introduce to you my very Let’s Play segment entitled, “Richie D Plays”. I’ll be doing this series sporadically and I’m breaking in the series with a game called Injustice Gods Among for the Xbox 360. It’s a bit long, but I’d really appreciate it if you took the time to watch it all. Enjoy….

Well there ya have it! I hope you liked it! I know there was a few audio problems, but those WILL fixed in the next episode. Wow I never realized how much of a pain editing and uploading a video of this length really is. It’s all worth it though; I had a blast! Again, thank you for watching and keep an eye out for more Richie D Plays!

So there ya go! What are your thoughts on this new series? Did you sit through it all? Have any suggestions? Let me know in the comment section, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr!
