PITTSBURGH, PA —May 15, 2013—Avere Systems today announced that the Avere FXT Series Edge filers are helping visual effects studio Framestore, the winner of multiple BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Emmys and Oscars, to stay ahead of the technology curve. The case study explains how Framestore – whose visual effects have brought life to many hit films including Avatar, The Golden Compass, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Skyfall, War Horse, and upcoming space drama Gravity – chose Avere’s FXT 4500 Edge filers to manage the massive rendering and storage performance requirements.

War Horse (courtesy of Framestore & Dreamworks Pictures)

Essential features Avere brought to Framestore include the ability to identify hot files, improve storage load visibility, identify “rogue renders” that could wreak havoc on the system, and accelerate random and sequential read-and-write access to the system’s backend storage or core filers. The Avere FXT4500 Edge filers served the render farm, freeing up the storage system to service the rest of the facility. For more details, read the complete case study.

Framestore CTO Steve MacPherson explained that several competitive SSD-based solutions were considered – everything from building their own system based on CacheFS software to adding SSDs to the newly installed core filers.

MacPherson said, “Ultimately, Avere won the argument with its ability to deliver the type of metrics, analysis and identification of hot files essential to production efficiency. Simplicity is a key Framestore engineering design goal. Once we established the correct configuration for the Avere system, we were able to just step back and let it do its thing.”

Steve Macpherson, CTO, Framestore

He added, “We are also very pleased with the support and technical knowledge of the Avere team at all levels – from the installation engineers to the CEO, we have been able to discuss our challenges in a way that focuses on an informed solution. The Avere Edge filers were absolutely critical to the delivery of Gravity – the most computationally demanding film Framestore has ever done. On Gravity Framestore had an unprecedented level of CG imagery being created and a huge number of people working on this material simultaneously.

“The Avere FXT 4500 edge filer, with its ability to deliver up to 150 TB of Flash in a single cluster, was built to meet the challenging demands of workloads found in the entertainment industry and other similar types of environments,” said Ron Bianchini, President and CEO, Avere Systems. “Avere is thrilled to play a supporting role in the production of blockbuster movies in conjunction with Framestore.”

Black on Black

The caw is not a prayer. It is something wilder than that, with less plead. It carries best on sharp, icy mornings. Mornings like this, when the crow walks the branches of the leafless catalpa. The catalpa that lived through the summer drought by sending thirsty roots deeper into the sandy soil. The crow is curious about the goings-on in the house. He yearns for a hammer and saw to turn the tree into boards to make a room. A room without a window or door. He tacks the last board in place with a threepenny nail and becomes part of the dark. In the black on black all that is left is the caw. He plucks a single tail feather to toss and it is gone forever.

Lowlife/Fast-lane/Highlife

It could be that a murder took place. It could be that I
escaped to Italy. Possibly I had a religious conversion. And
it’s true; I eventually slept with his brother. After my return to
the valley, we drove a rutted road toward the hot springs. My
car got stuck. He bashed in the cabin’s window with a rock
and we crawled through broken glass to bed. We kissed. That
was good, but then his cock seemed so small, I could barely
feel it. I wondered why she never told me that.

In the morning, he was no longer handsome. His hair was too
short, too punk, with waxy strands. Muscles lax, he claimed
coke had aerobic benefits and meant it. No longer a Parisian
street poet, he moved with the defensive slight of a cat
expecting to be hit. Angling in from the light of day where he
didn’t belong, shame filtered over him; little braids dampened
on pale junkie skin. Queasy in sunlight, I turned away.

Now I can’t remember if that was before or after my
hospitalization. It’s a blur; where I went, what I did. Nursing
shin splints from dancing, she swore she’d be a Rock’n
Roller forever, but a black crow fell on her doorstep. Losers,
they’re losers, she once hissed. How can you love a loser?

Resurrection

On the Third Day

Hemingway would probably reconstruct
his ruined head like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle
then ease down the snow belted Ketchum road.
Kicking a can, he’d stroll into the next decade
dragging the severed rack of a ten point buck,
in search of another clean, well-lighted place.

Like a film strip run backward, Berryman’s fingertips
might glance the dewed bank as he ascends feet first
to the Washington Avenue bridge. Mistress Bradstreet
would take his hand, lead him to the nearest podium,
his Pulitzer pressed under an arm, a new poem
scarifying patterns in his boozy brain.

Crane, velvet bathrobe billowing behind,
wavers on the prow, his tented hands lifted
to the Mexican sky. He steps back from the abyss,
inner eye envisioning the ink sip of a fountain pen,
the hard, hot brain frenzy that sends phrases marching
toward another bridge between oblivion and art.

Sexton could reduce her carbon footprint, wait
for a newer model, one in candy apple red with doll’s eyes
winking from the radio dials while Plath entwines
with Otto in the back seat. The three could motor east,
race to beat the rising sun, anxious to be the first
to see the angel roll back the stone.

Ken Poyner

Cocking the Fulcrum

There was a boy on the sidewalk today who had one of those “Hungry, please help” signs, so, as I went by, I gave him a quick sweep to the chins and gloriously like broken wind chimes down he went. He did not even drop his sign: but he did have to carefully put it aside to set himself back up.

There is so much violence in the world. All the media are obsessed with conflict programming. Everything is so whirligig loud. Everything is opposition ego, stratification rite. It becomes important to let one’s own aimless violence out, to clear the evolving static from the skull, to make a temporary peace with one’s inner needs. It must be done: what is important is how you do it.

You can’t take your soup of boiled anger to bed. You can’t commit your sedative of replacement violence against a peer or superior: that just would not work. More conflict. More competition. No. You have to strike down, downward, decently low: to those beneath the concern line. I felt so much better when that boy went over. I could carelessly sip a full breath directly between my currently stylish lips. The air tasted like the engaged sexuality of unrecognized children. It was like the flush of pure blue advocate electrons being set perilously free behind the bridge of my nose. For a full half an hour I did not think that I needed a new car, or was cramped in my home, or needed to worry about the worth of erections.

My wife takes a less purist approach. She would have loudly lectured everyone on the corner, as though they were fish glued with a living epoxy to the side glass of an aquarium, about how poor children should be in orphanages, and put to learning trades: be given the permanent satisfaction of a career in service and manual labor. These children could start with yard work now, she would tell them; then they might end up profitably clearing drainage ditches; and they could, perhaps, one day, bespeckled with cover alls and a utilitarian second hand hat, grow into running machinery, or measuring macadam with whimsically blue chalk lines that automatically retract.

For a mercurially usable time afterwards she might be less randomly combative, more cream scented sure of herself, more giving of her unaccounted for time: ready to let a peer be a peer. After unexpectedly meeting, diligently recharged, in the hall, we might lazily lumber through a curious foreplay, and execute our marriage without the salt-tasting, dagger-tipped haze usually winding in our self-gratifying fluids, that worries of who in this episode might be getting mechanically the better of whom.

Maybe I should shepherd her down to that corner.

I say started because she didn’t finish

She didn’t finish because I was the worst boyfriend imaginable

She was studying the Braille book she had ordered from the Hadley School for
the Blind and asked me about a passage

I read it and it said See Spot run

I said stupid book kiddies and tore it in half

She said hey my book

I said SEE I Is The WaS SPOT run Ing run eD duh duh and tore it into more
halves

She gave Braille up and almost gave me up

Almost

She went on to learn Gaelic French Japanese Danish and became a pioneer in
written ASL

Braille she never took up again

It took me years but I became a good husband

When we were separated for two years I nothing but read

Good post by Mike Matchett (thank you) – so MRAM is surfacing again as a possible Flash successor. How about PCM ?

NAND flash-based storage could be replaced by newer forms of non-volatile memory like MRAM technology. Find out why MRAM’s density, cost and form factor could make flash obsolete.

Flash storage is everywhere these days. It’s hard to have a discussion about IT infrastructure without someone talking about how flash storage can be leveraged to make server and storage architectures faster.

Below are some screenshots from my final design for the Rabbit Heart GUI and HUD project.

The title screen has three buttons that display Continue, New Game and Option buttons, these become visible when the cursor is hovered over images of Ululu, these emit a red aura to give a visual key to the player. I wanted to include some of the development art work created by Gareth and Paul in my designs for this project.

Ululu’s in-game HUD showing health bar, compass, equipped weapon, exo suit and inventory bag.

This is the inventory screen showing five slots within the bag, three of which are occupied.

The item selection screen gives information about the selected item and options for the player. Again some of the original art work is included in the background.

The Map screen shows Ululu’s current location and shows points of interest.

This is the view from the Ninja Bunny exo suit, in the middle is the HUD screen displaying compass and enemy location. The bar to the left displays the energy status of the Ninja Bunny, with ammo being displayed in the right hand corner. At the top right of the screen is an ejection pull handle that enables Ululu to exit the exo suit when its energy is depleted.

A few weeks ago I covered my first fashion show as a journalist here in Brisbane. I felt pretty darn cool waltzing up to the entrance and saying ‘I’m on the press list with a plus 1.’ Brilliant! Of course as a newbie media kid everything had to go a little bit wrong. this started with my flash. I borrowed a speed flash from a friend and it was pretty old (and also cracked) but she assured me that it would work fine as long as I kept my settings a certain way. This turned out not to be the case. I’m not very good when it comes to setting camera attributes so I assumed it was my own ignorance that resulted in my photos being either a blurred mess or just white light. Nope, turns out the flash was too old for my camera and none of the photographers at the gig could figure out how to make it do my bidding. Oh well! Other then this little hick-up the night went smoothly, It will definitely take some getting used to being involved in this scene.

Here is a slideshow of some of the photos I snapped from the event but if you want to read the Article..which I think you should, follow this Link

(Oops, I wrote this one out yesterday but apparently accidentally didn’t put it up. Super sorry.)

A new screenshot!

Well, you might be saying, this looks a lot like the last one. And well, you might be saying, that little yellow number in the upper right isn’t any higher than the one you had before. And well, you’re probably not going to say that now it takes a lot longer to load and it runs choppy because of all the caching operations, but I’m sure thinking it.

What can I say? I’d be lying if I said I was pleased, but I’d also be lying if I said I was surprised.

There’s a lot of extra architecture I’ve built here, and I don’t think that after a certain point I really expected to get huge performance gains from a more complicated solution.

So: What does this mean? Did I fuck up? Not really! I’ve just created a solution to a different problem than the one I was faced with. I’ve created a very powerful particle system, just one that has some kinks that need ironing out. With a bit more coding, I should be able to integrate the same depth of field processes that I’m using for my environmental details into my particle effects, something which would have absolutely murdered the framerate of the previous system, and encounter relatively minor slowdown since the processing will be automatically cached. This is an excellent solution for achieving very sophisticated particle effects, just not so much for pushing a huge number of particles.

It’s looking super unlikely that any single solution will be efficient for all of the situations that may emerge, so I’m going to be seeing if I can integrate different asset types into the particle system. Not really certain how I want to go about that yet, but it’ll be fun to think about!

Karee Gai – The Old Siam

Chicken cooked in mild yellow curry with potato and onions – can be selected as a rice plate ($8.95) or a la carte ($9.95). Selected the rice option simply because curry includes so much sauce, how else will you eat it – by licking it all up?? Anyway, this yellow curry is fantastic. The chicken is boneless, juicy and tender, the potatoes are perfectly cooked (not too crunchy yet not too soggy), and the curry is absolutely creamy and mild (as advertised, surprisingly).

Special Rice Noodle

Flat rice noodle topped with ground chicken, shrimp, squid, tofu, mushroom, and house special sauce, $8.95. So much involved in this dish, talk about party in the mouth! Lots of flavor, lots of texture, lots of goodness. I don’t care much for the tofu, but everything else tastes wonderful. I especially love that there is plenty of meat/seafood, so you don’t have to hunt around, unsure if you’ve received all you’ve asked for, unlike certain other restaurants that are skimpy on such ingredients. Plenty to share, just a matter of whether or not you’re willing to share!

This place is narrow, a bit cramped, with a waitlist. It doesn’t quite give the best first impression when you enter, particularly if you wind up running into the pole structure that holds the building up while entering through the front door – it’s a bit of an odd design. The column is literally right in the middle at the front entrance. Only one bathroom. There’s a wide-screen TV that displays a slideshow of a bunch of the menu items, which is helpful, unless you’re in a hurry to order and fail to notice the screen until after you’ve made your tough decisions, speaking from experience…The place is dimly lit, to the point where my photos were not ideal, with or without flash. Staff is friendly, tables are small. Definitely would return for the food.

Goodness sakes, I’ve been busy!

I’m two and a half weeks into my workterm, and it’s going very well. There’s a possibility of it turning into a summer job, which would be fantastic, but I won’t know about that for another little while. I’m also waiting anxiously for my upcoming interview for a fall internship. I’ll be hearing about whether I’m in or not with that one in June. So much waiting! I wish I could get it all over with now!

With my school/work and personal life taking up a lot of my time, I haven’t been able to dedicate much energy into my Tic Tac Toe game. It’s very close to completion, however, so hopefully I will be able to wrap it all up in time for the long weekend (Victoria Day, a statutory holiday in Canada, takes place on May 20).

Aside from Tic Tac Toe, I’ve also been whipping up a Game Design document to keep my writing skills in check. Writing Game Design documents for class assignments was a bit tedious and rushed, but now that I can take my time and can go into more detail, it’s actually quite fun. I’ve developing plots for potential video games since I was young, which was one of the main reasons why I wanted to become a game designer. The Game Design document I’m currently working on is for one of those plots. I like how it forces me to think deeply about the universes, characters and stories I’ve come up within a strictly video game context. Expect to see a copy of the document online once I’ve finished the first version!
