A couple of weeks ago, I was so excited thinking about having a relaxing Thanksgiving. However, as Thanksgiving approached, I realized that I had a lot of assignments due the week following the holiday. I started to stress and began to think that this weekend would not be relaxing after all. Furthermore, I knew that a good deal of my vacation would be spent in the car driving around New York to see my family and friends. As we were packing for the weekend, my husband Sam told me that he was able to use the internet by tethering his blackberry to his laptop, and suggested that I do some work during the ride. At first, I didn’t believe that it would work; and if it did, I thought it would be really slow. I was wrong. The internet worked well and I did not hit any “dead-zones” while traveling on the highway. I think that this type of technology can be very beneficial for students who commute or travel long distances on the weekends. Students that take public transportation can definitely benefit from tethering as they are can access the internet while traveling to work/school.

My little sister came to spend Thanksgiving with me this year, and told me that her classmates use many technological tools in school. She told me that her classmates use many cool applications on their iPods such as the “flash card” application. She told me that many of her classmates use this application in order to download flashcards onto their iPods so that they can study using their iPod instead of writing them out on index cards. I also heard that for students who are preparing for SAT, students will download Podcast programs in order to hear people pronounce SAT words and explain their definitions. In high school, I loved using flash cards but absolutely dreaded writing them out. I think that these are great ways to incorporate technology to help students improve academically.

I used to think that I could manage without most of the modern technological advances over the past 20 years. However, I realized that I have come to depend on many of these advancements. Although I could survive without many of these advancements, I’ve realized that there are endless opportunities to use these advancements to help motivate students to learn.

River to Ones Soul

This is my first piece since my “Chocolate Gelatos and Mountain Sunsets” post. It is part of my new series, Soul Searching, that was inspired by my heart to heart with Lexi. I call this River to Ones’ Soul.  The stone is a Cobra Jasper that I purchased from Gary B. Wilson. I find this stone very striking in its markings and the color patterns.  And I see a river running through this, so that is how I arrived at the title.

The stone is set in Sterling Silver with copper accents.  There are a few firsts with this piece too.

• My first rivets, thanks to a step by step posted in Lapidary Journal’s Flashcard by Helen Driggs.
• The two separate sections, connected with jump rings is another first.  For that, I followed another step by step The Fossil Fern Pendant, only this was written by my mentor, Lexi Erickson, in the August 2009 issue of Lapidary Journal.
• I carried the gentle curve from the bottom of the stone to to top piece of this pendant too.

I hope you can tell how inspired I’ve become by that heart to heart Lexi and I shared on September 28th….that was my mother’s birthday too.  Hmmm, there were a lot of things working to help me that evening and now.  I’m certain of it.

Why waste hundreds of index cards where electronic substitutes are available?

I initially found this from Lifehacker’s Back to School segment from Fall 2009.  This website allows users to create accounts to create and share flashcards, a classic study technique made easy.  The flashcards allow the user to embed pictures and audio as well.  Students who are tied to their ipods and iphones can also opt for a fee based, iStudyToGo software which allows them to take their flashcards on the go.

I use Flashcard Exchange to create the cards and Mental Case for iPhone. It’s not one of the free ones, but it’s worth the $8 or so that it costs because it’s brain-dead easy.

Love them or hate them, flashcards are useful for learning key vocabulary, concepts, or content. Whether you need to learn basic French or advanced political concepts, they’re helpful for cementing information in your mind. Writing them on bits of card or paper is all well and good, but like most things, there’s a computer equivalent which has the benefit of being easily accessible and editable, and far less likely to be lost or damaged. Both Anki and Quizlet provide online alternatives to risking damage to your dainty hands by using a pen and pair of scissors.

Customising some flashcards with Anki

Anki is the downloadable software option, as opposed to Quizlet, which is housed online. Anki has a pretty large number of features, but this is also its downfall in some ways because it makes it confusing at times. It’s got a pretty advanced editing interface, but it’s not simple enough to create flashcards. Although the ability to add such things as sound or video clips, equations, and images to flashcards may prove very useful for learning or teaching concepts which go beyond text.

After creating a set of cards you can begin looking through them. Options appear after viewing each card which ask you how hard you found the card. Your answer to that will change how often the card comes back up. If you said you found it hard it will come back more often, whereas if you choose easy it will appear less often.

The software will also create graphs to show your progress and the amount of time you’ve spent on sets of cards. These seem awkward and clunky and of little use due to seeming like they’re going a bit over-the-top in trying to provide an in-depth analysis of your learning habits. Therefore the graphs looked out of place and confusing when I tried to get my feeble mind around them. There’s also an online section to Anki which allows you to view and edit your flashcards online, but this feature also seemed to be poorly implemented and awkward to use.

Quizlet, on the other hand, struck me as being a bit more smashing. Flashcards are simple and easy to use – text is displayed, followed by the answer when the button is clicked to reveal it. I think Quizlet should consider implement a similar system the one which Anki uses – being able to choose how often the card shows up would be  useful addition to prioritise your learning more efficiently. In addition to the basic flashcard feature that you’d expect, it’s also invents other ways for you to learn the items – including a test, and more interestingly, games. These are simple games which place the focus firmly upon the vocabulary rather than getting too caught up with creating masterpieces of Flash.

By far the most impressive feature of Quizlet is the ability to search through a plethora of sets of flashcards which other users have created. A search for just about anything will probably yield some cards which are related to the topic you want to study. When you create your own these are shared with other Quizlet users to help them with their learning. Whilst most public card sets can’t be edited by other people, you can use the ‘Reuse these terms’ feature to add the cards into your own deck which you can edit and add to. Another smashing little feature is the ability to export the cards as text. This could prove useful for printing out notes which you can read over when you’re doing revision or studying without the benefit of access to a computer.

Overall Quizlet seems like a much stronger contender, and I’d suggest it was a better option to Anki if you’re planning or learning using flashcards. You can access Quizlet from www.quizlet.com, and download Anki from www.ichi2.net/anki.

Quizlet is an excellent flashcard website. After making an account, you may create “sets”, each one having different terms, as you would do with flashcards. You can memorize them through many different ways, including “familiarize”, “learn” and “test”. You can also print them out, and play with other user’s flashcards. In Quizlet, users may create a “group”, such as a study group, and manage their content privately.

Quizlet is the ultimate tool for studying vocabulary and terms for several subjects, and flashcards-lovers will enjoy Quizlet very much. It istter to handle flashcards online instead of manually because on Quizlet, there are very useful and various ways to know your terms.

I personally use Quizlet to study mostly foreign-language vocabulary, and it makes me very confident and assured that I won’t forget any terms (Quizlet lets you keep track of your “most missed words”.

R4 SDHC

La compañía británica Metaforic y Nintendo preparan un sistema anticopia para los juegos de la plataforma portátil de Nintendo. Según hemos podido saber gracias a Gamasutra el sistema anticopia destinado a las flashcards (Nintendo solo nombra a la R4, la flashcard más vendida en muchos países. Sin embargo, supongo que esta medida afectará al resto de cartuchos flash) consistiría en un código de seguridad distinto para cada juego.

Nintendo bien sabe que ya es demasiado tarde, y que las roms seguirán saliendo, pero espera que los hackers tarden más tiempo en sacar un parche y vender así más unidades.

Por fin recibí mi DSTT el pasado viernes, pensaba que tardaría mas tiempo en llegarme, me sorprendió llegar a casa y encontrarme un sobrecito en chino encima de la mesa de la cocina. Dentro contenía lo que tanto estaba esperando, mi flashcard.

Como pensaba que iba a tardar mas no encargué en el APP de mi pueblo la tarjeta micro SDHC, pensar que por fin tenía la DSTT en mis manos y que por culpa de la tarjeta no iba a poder disfrutarla, por la tarde llamé y resultó que si que tenía una. Una Transcend de 4GB, que encima es de Class 6 (6 Mbps de lectura escritura).

Gracias al adaptador USB que venía con la DSTT conecté la SDHC al ordenador sin problemas, seguí la recomendación de la web de formatearla en FAT32 a 32K y en unos minutos ya estaba lista.

Copíe el menú de la DSTT, las roms y un SKIN de windos vista que me bajé.

Va como la seda, pensaba que sería mas lenta a la hora de cargar el menú pero no.

PD: Para los que no lo sepan, se pueden hacer correr roms de juegos de NDS, pero SÓLO puedes bajárte la rom si tienes el juego original.

Mucha gente es reacia a comprar un AceKard para la reciente Dsi porque hay que poner la consola en inglés para poder ejecutar el cartucho. Ésto lleva a los juegos multilenguaje a ponerse también en inglés, lo cual es una putada si no se conoce el idioma.

No hay problema, gracias a un sencillo programa podemos poner todas las roms en español (aunque hasta nuevo firmware tendremos el sistema operativo de la consola en inglés, pero ya es algo).

El uso es muy sencillo. Cogemos la MICROSD, la ponemos en la llave usb de turno (o lo que usemos en el ordenador) y en la misma carpeta de las roms ponemos el archivo “.exe” que viene dentro del archivo comprimido. Lo ejecutamos, parcheamos (la ventana desaparecerá sin cartel ni nada, pero estará hecho) y voilá.

EDITO: Lo que hemos hecho es poner un archivo de trucos a cada archivo, así que en el menú de la Acekard tendremos que activar los CHEATS para todos los juegos. Perdón por no especificarlo, se me fue la pelota

NOTA: Si tenéis las roms en varias carpetas tenéis que copiar el ejecutable en todas ellas y ejecutarlo una por una.

An alle, die noch einen NDS oder NDS lite haben, das ganze funktioniert natürlich genauso mit den älteren Geräten. Nur könnt Ihr ältere, bzw. noch günstigere Flashcards verwenden. Diese findet Ihr im gleichen Shop, der auch die EZflash Vi verkauft.

El pasado lunes pedí mi DSTT a la tienda oficial (ndsttshop.com) y tengo unas ganas tremendasa de que me llegue.

Para el que no lo sepa, la DSTT (o TTDS) es una flashcard que permite ejecutar aplicaciones Homebrew y ROMs de Nintendo DS, tampoco voy a contar mucho, ya hay bastante información en Internet, usa google para buscarla.

En un principio la encargué a otra tienda, pero estuve indagando y la imagen que muestran según la web oficial es fake, es decir, que es una copia. ¿Cuál es el problema? Aparte de calidad y fiabilidad, que si le meto el SO de la DSTT un programita llamado Fake-Killer se cargará la flashcard. Pedí que me anulasen el pedido y me contestaron que no era falsa que esa imagen era de las primeras tarjetas, etc. Pues actualiza la imagen.

Pues por la tarjeta “falsa” me cobraban unos 27€ (contando los gastos de envío), y en la tienda oficial me cobran unos 16€ (gastos de envío gratis), eso si, el problema es que tardará de 7 a 14 días laborables en llegarme.

Yo ya estoy impaciente de que me llegue.

Pünktlich zum Verkaufsstart ist es Hackern gelungen, das System des Nintendo DSi zu hacken. Dies ermöglicht es, ROMs direkt von der SD Karte zu starten, ohne dass eine Flashcard zum Einsatz kommt. Möglich ist dies durch eine manipulierte GIF Bilddatei. Diese startet den bekannten M3 Sakura Bootloader und man kann ganz einfach seine ROMs auswählen und zocken. Dazu muss man einfach die M3 Sakura Firmware auf der SD Karte installieren, die GIF Datei dazu und die GIF Datei dann über den Normalen DSi Bildbetrachter aufrufen. Die Bilddatei wird sich nicht öffnen, dafür startet der M3 Sakura Bootloader. Den Download des Hacks findet Ihr hier. Viel Spaß damit.

Nintendo DSi

In 4 Tagen ist es soweit, dann ist der Nintendo DSi auch in Deutschland erhältlich. Um in den Genuss von guter Homebrew Software zu kommen, benötigt man eine Flashcard. Da die des Nintendo DS/DS lite nicht funktionieren werden, ist also die Anschaffung einer neuen nötig. Hier empfiehlt sich zum einen die Acekard 2i (ca. 14,20 Euro, inkl. Versand) oder die TopToy DSTTi (ca. 11,50 Euro, inkl. Versand). Ich persönlich würde die Acekard bevorzugen, da man dort relativ sicher sein kann, dass die Firmware auch regelmäßig ein Update bekommt. Gerüchten nach hat das DSTT Team die Firmwareentwicklung eingestellt, somit ist es nicht unbedingt ratsam, sich noch solch eine Karte zu holen. Bitte beachtet, dass der Versand bei den von mir angegebenen Links bis zu 3 Wochen dauern kann. Aber der günstige Preis lässt das wohl verschmerzen. Solltet Ihr einen günstigeren Shop kennen, bitte in den Kommentaren hinterlassen. Da ich keine Provision bekomme, habe ich auch kein Problem damit, links zu anderen Shops zu posten. Allerdings würde es mich sehr wundern, wenn man die Karten irgendwo günstiger bekommt.

Eu sempre compro jogos originais. Não é porque eu tenho dinheiro, muito pelo contráro, demora pra eu comprar um jogo novo, o negócio é que eu simplesmente não compro produto porco. Produto pirata é porco, porcamente porco. O que também não quer dizer que eu não faça uns downloadizinhos de programas crackeados por aí. Atire a primeira pedra quem não baixa. Mas pelo menos não estou pagando por isso e posso simplesmente “deletar” a hora que eu quiser, não é físico.

Eu acho downloads legais até o ponto em que as pessoas começam a tirar vantagem finaceira deles. Baixar, queimar e vender, isso aí não é legal mesmo.

Ultimamente tenho pensado em adquirir um Flashcard para o Nintendo DS, mais especificamente um AceKard 2.1. Flashcards, até onde eu sei, não são ilegais, o que pode ser ilegal é o tipo de arquivo que você coloca neles (se eu estiver errado me corrijam). Mas comprando um desses o que eu colocaria seria obviamente arquivos de jogos que são vendidos por aí fisicamente, então pirataria, que por sua vez é ilegal.

Bom, mas ao contrário do que parece, eu não vim aqui pra falar sobre o que é legal e o que não é. Vim dar a minha opinião sobre os pontos positivos e os negativos de se adquirir um troço desses.

Começando pelos positivos, temos a imensa comodidade proporcionada: não se necessita a troca de cartuchos, tudo está organizado em uma pequena listinha aí, só clicar e jogar/assistir/ouvir. Além disso, claro, a economia, já que você não pagará por tudo isso, só usará um pouco de banda do seu Speedy/NET, gastará alguns poucos minutos na transferência do arquivo e voilá!

Só por isso aí o negócio parece tentador e pode até fazer agente esquecer alguns dos pontos negativos:

O mais óbvio é que isso é ilegal, mas isso provavelmente não importa a você, que provavelmente faz download de tudo que encontra pela frente como quase todo usuário de internet nesse planeta. Também o mercado como um todo perde com isso. Mas o ponto negativo que eu considero ser o mais preocupante (pelo menos pra mim) é justamente o de ter acesso a tanta coisa. E é MUITA coisa.

Porra, mas isso não é bom? Tá, você não entendeu o que eu quis dizer. Vou dar um exemplo: quem é fanático por baixar musica deve se lembrar como era o tempo da “internet discada”. você baixava uma musica de 3mb em 20min. para depois poder baixar a próxima, isso se a conexão não caísse. Era uma porcaria. Nesse meio tempo, entre o download de uma musica e outra, dava para ouvir a último que foi baixada umas 7 ou 8 vezes, ou seja, você realmente aproveitava o que estava baixando. Quando a banda larga começou a se estabelecer o negócio era baixar coletâneas inteiras em pouco tempo. O que ficava faltando era tempo de ouvir tudo, então ouvia-se uma música de cada álbum enquanto a próxima coletânea estava chegando no torrent, depois esquecia todos aqueles arquivos num canto qualquer do PC.

Você não consegue se controlar e baixar uma coisa de cada vez, você quer tudo logo e acaba não aproveitando nem a metade. É aquele negócio de “quem tem pouco é que sabe dar valor”. Com os Flashcards acontece a mesma coisa. 50 jogos de uma só vez alí na sua frente, não dá pra se concentrar em apenas um jogo e aproveitá-lo em sua totalidade, joga-se então dez minutos de cada. Os que parecerem mais “bobinhos” é só deletar para dar mais espaço no MD para outros jogos.

Quando você compra um jogo na loja, chega em casa, abre a caixinha e conecta o cartucho na entrada do videogame a coisa é diferente, você quer jogar aquilo até o fim, afinal você fez um certo esforço para poder jogá-lo e pode ser que demore até que compre o próximo. Você realmente aproveita o que está jogando.

Se vou comprar o Flashcard eu não sei, ainda estou meio indeciso. Gosto de me concentrar em um jogo só e com um Flashcard eu sei que não vou conseguir.

Escrevi isso agora espontâneamente, portanto não me chingem se a vocês parecer um monte de merda amontoada.
