Well, at least I don’t have 3 damn shows this time….I should have just combined E and F. Whatever. Some letters are short, other letters (like M) are really long.

Fate/Stay Night – Saber

First of all, who doesn’t like Saber? That’s right, no one. No one except DOUCHBAGS. So yea, Fate/Stay Night kicked a lot of ass, and I’m very fucking excited about the movie that’s coming out (or came out, (depending on whether or not I ever finish this post). Saber. Is. Awesome.

She looks FUCKING AWESOME COOL.

She is KING OF FUCKING ARTHUR, WHO IS FUCKING AWESOME COOL BECAUSE KINGS ARE USUALLY GUYS, AND NO, SHE DOESN’T HAVE A PENIS (assumed).

She’s a nasty fighter, and in this aspect also remains to be FUCKING AWESOME COOL.

Excuse me, I have a boner. Not for anything perverted, but because my cock recognized FUCKING AWESOME COOL SHIT, and thusly, it stands for that shit. At this point, my cock doesn’t even want sex, it’s just showing appreciation. It’s that same as when you stand and clap when the President walks in to make a speech. It’s a matter of respect…..my cock does that…….

Yea so anyway, Saber’s personality is one that I like, cold at times, and a bit non understanding toward certain things. Hmm, that’s a bit confusing…..let me say instead, that her pairing with Shiro is a main reason as to why I like her so much, because their chemistry helps illuminate certain things about her, for example, Shiro always try to protect her, and she insists that she doesn’t need protecting, and all that kind of shit.

That’s it? That’s your example? You didn’t explain shit!

Fuck yourself.

FLCL – Haruko Haruhara

I ahevnt- whoops -haven’t really talked about FLCL much on this beautiful ISSS, but for what it’s worth, this is one of the coolest fucking shows ever made on the face of the planet. If it wasn’t only 6 episodes (which is a perfect length for the series if you ask me), then I might have to put this on my top ten. Actually, fuck it, I should at least put this in my top twenty. (To be honest, I have no idea what my top anything is, it changes in my head 6 times a week. The other day I thought about taking InuYasha off the list completely, mainly because I’m so disappointed with the new season. That’s right, disappointed (EDIT: I wrote this like a month ago, so by “the other day” I mean “the other day a month ago”). My computer background is actually this, and I don’t think it will ever change in the next year.

Anyway, finding the best character in this show is slightly difficult, because the characters are all fucking awesome. In the end I decided on the default awesome character, and went with Haruko, because she’s a crazy mutha fucka.

Fruits Basket – Kyo

I feel like he’s the only one in this show who has a cool personality, besides Kagura (who is a skitso which is awesome). Actually, why isn’t Kagura my favorite character? She threatening him into proposing to her with a boulder! That’s fucking actually cool. All the characters in this anime seemed flat to me, but I’ve been over that. Kyo is cool because he’s always pissed. I suspect that the reason he is so pissed isn’t because he can’t win a fight, but because he’s stuck in FUCKING FRUITS BASKET.

He changes into a cat, and cats are cool, and he might not always (ever) win his fights, but he keeps trying, and doesn’t back down, and that’s respectable.

Fullmetal Alchemist (season 1) – Edward Elric

This was probably the hardest one yet…..sort of. I mean, by now you may know how I feel about some characters, but at the end of the series (episode 49 to be exact and precise), Ed became the fucking MAN, and I have to give him props for that. I mean, he transfigured himself. HELLO people. BALLS.

Besides that, there’s the fact that he:

Is nasty at alchemy.

Has automail for one arm and one leg, and transfigures his arm into a weapon at some points (oh sure he can do that, but when his arm breaks it’s somehow impossible to transfigure back).

He doesn’t need to draw a fucking gay circle to perform alchemy.

He gets made when people call him short, and this is funny to me (and never gets old….they could do a whole episode of short jokes and I’d probably like it maybe possibly).

So far I’m liking the second season even more (which means a lot., Bones is doing work. Oh, and in the new season, Riza Hawkeye is my favorite, hands down.

Full Metal Panic (all seasons) – Melissa Mao

That’s right, I didn’t choose Sousuke. I mean, this show is loaded with awesome characters, but I had to go with my main she-bitch on this one, Melissa Mao.

She drinks beer (why do I consider this a plus? what’s my deal here?)

She’s got that Ghost in the Shell haircut going, and to be honest, it works better for her than it does for the Major. (I’m a sucker for short hair on girls…but not TOO short)

Kind of like Shiro from Fate/Stay Night, she does good with Kurz, because she’s able to put him down whenever he makes a sexual advancement toward him, and this in turn does a good job of displaying her personality, which is at times, abrasive (like sandpaper…..sandpaper is abrasive too.)

I like her. BAM.

^This image isn’t in the actual light novel, but it depicts a scene from it, of which there is a picture in the LN.

I’ll be posting on a much more often than once a month basis from now on, at least until I run out of books to review.

–

Title: フルクリ / FLCL; “Fooly Cooly” and “Fire Starter”
Volume: 1 (of 3)
Author: Enokido Yoji
Original Concept and Plot: Tsurumaki Kazuya
Illustrator: Tsurumaki Kazuya
Group: Gainax
Licensed by: TokyoPop
Translated by: Gemma Collinge / Laura Wyrick (Adapter)

Review By: Kafkafuura

The Akihabara district populace demanded, “Please, make it all GAINAX-weird so that the old men who follow subcultures, all the Shibuya teenagers, and the girls who read cute comics won’t get it.” I kept my end of the deal – but just this once. -Sato Hiroki (FLCL Producer)

Now, if you are of my generation, I’m apt to make the perhaps haphazard assumption that if you are into Japanese anime/manga sub-culture you’ve seen, or at the very least heard of FLCL, also known as “FooLy CooLy”. It’s known for being ridiculously confusing and nonsensical, with explosions, robots and great indy music – all part of the charm. It’s a cult classic, in other words.

First off, the FLCL light novels are a novelization of the 6 episode anime series, started a few months after its completion in 2000, not “source material”, but it was planned at the same time. This lends itself to a different sort of atmosphere: the FLCL light novels can be best described as: an explanation to “what the hell did I just see?”. But this doesn’t mean that it’s unsuitable if you haven’t seen the series, they’re perfectly enjoyable on their own; it also means that if you’ve seen the FLCL anime already the light novels give you the benefit of “knowing what you actually just saw.” (People who have seen will understand).

Now for the specific source material. What you actually want to know. FLCL Vol. 1 comprises of the first two arcs of FLCL: “Fooly Cooly” and “Fire Starter”. (Basic plot summary follows.)

“Fooly Cooly”:
Enter Nandaba Naota “cool sixth-grade junior high hero”, Samejima Mamimi “high school student and girlfriend to Naota’s brother”, and Haruhara Haruko “dangerous alien who rides a Vespa”. Can’t you already see the makings of a story? “Fooly Cooly” sets up the introduction, and has the scene that really defines FLCL in general, Naota – in an very awkward situation with his brother (who left for America)’s girlfriend is alerted to the sound of a raging enging whereupon this crazy woman attempts and eventually succeeds in whacking him on the head with a bass guitar that seems to have an engine in it. Naota eventually grows a horn, and at a critical moment, a robot and another robot’s arm come out of his head (emptied of its brains) and fight. The battle concludes and life returns to what Naota tells himself is normal.

“Fire Starter”:
“I can’t hardly tell anymore where the truth ends and the lies begin.”
The robot, Canti, becomes part of the family, Haruhara Haruko too. More horns start growing out of Naota’s head. Fires are sprouting up all over the place. Mamimi thinks Canti’s a god, and you’re introduced to a few of Naota’s classmates on the side, including the generic “class president” character (she’ll show up later). What is medical mechanica really all about? Naota finds the fire-starter, and robot warfare sprouts from his head again. Wha~T? Naota’s relationship with Mamimi develops. Confused? Good. Read!

Personal Opinion/Review:
I’m a fan of it. It targets a sort of niche, but light novels are a niche – it’s something to appreciate. It makes much more sense than the wild ride the anime throws at you, but it certainly doesn’t leave behind the craziness. So the story is great; the added internal dialogue and exposition helps explain a lot about the series and the world it’s set in in general. The translation is very good; the illustrations are done by the creator so they can’t be any more accurate; the length is good, great for bus-ride reading. The one thing I hear complaints about the most is the price tag. It’s short, 122 pages, but $9.99. There are three of them, so you’re going to be spending ~$30 if you want all of them. You might say it has a high price tag because they think they can hook fans regardless, but if you compare the book itself to other books, it’s really not that expensive. I see where the complaints are coming from, but I personally don’t see it as a problem. As a side note, if you like this kinda stuff – go find Cencoroll, it has a similar feel.

This is a part 1/3
I’ll review the other books soon enough.

Comments? I’m not going to attempt an indepth discussion of possible meanings and stuff, that’s not a review; but feel free to discuss what you think.

This is an excellent short and is reminiscent of both particular scenes in GAINAX’s FLCL OVA as well as recent Pixar shorts. Another independent project akin to the recent Cencoroll film, but this piece actually has energy and a sense of humor…something that I was very dissapointed not to find in Cencoroll. This is great stuff.

This is an artist I’ve been following for a while now, and I have yet to be disappointed in them, though I don’t always support the sort of things they draw. I think the full version of that Hanekawa Tsubasa (Bakemonogatari) thumbnailed to the side is a good depiction of their style and the sorts of things they draw.

Namely, big or at least larger than usual boobs, blushes, and sex appeal. However! The artist does draw other things as well. For instance, this perfectly suitable Nagato.

On the other hand, a majority of images by this artist show partial nudity, girls on a bed, girls in pajamas, girls with headphones (love!), or a combination of the bunch.

The artist also seems to like megane, which is fine by me. Their megane and headphones combinations are quite cute, and their art has just enough shine to accentuate the best parts or just brighten up an otherwise dark theme in their work.

I also like this artist because they’ve done some of the best Bakemonogatari fanart I’ve seen. For instance, they’re about the only one who’s done a really great work of the Arararararagi twins.

Other standouts include Pan, Aoyama’s Umineko crossover, Nekoro’s Shinobu, Hinasaki’s Shinobu, and of course redjuice’s Shinobu, which introduced me to the Bakemonogatari world. There’s more art out there, but these are the ones that sit on the top of my head. (And some of these may be a little familiar…)

Anyway, the artist is also able to do nice originals that bring forward angles or ideas that we don’t often see in art. Though, I will admit I only like half of this image. The view from the inside of the car is interesting, but the cigarettes are not so much. I always feel like cigarettes kill artwork a little bit. They’re just something so negative invading a likely positive piece of work. It’s rare to see them used in a negative work of art though weirdly. Of course, KEI pulls it off.

But to sum the artist up, there is a good balance in ability to do both series character and create their own. Plus, they’re quite able to depict characters in ways most artists don’t. For instance, un-made up and working. I just like their range and their use of color. Enough that I smile when I see their pixiv updates (but frown when I see a bit too much fanservice).

Basically! Pretty art, but be warned because it’s sexy.

And yes, I know I said I was going to do a post about something different than usual, and I am! But Kokoro updated today, and it was so easy to make this post, etc. So…yeah.

Here comes another anime. It’s called FLCL(or fooly cooly, or furi kuri, whatever you like best). It’s a weird one, and it’s only 6 episodes but it’s a good one. A really good one. I think it’s pretty highly-regarded in the anime community. Plus the art and music are to die for.

Naota is a normal Japanese 6th grade boy (although a little cynical), but when his older brother leaves for America to play baseball, his brother leaves his homeless 17 year old girlfriend Mamimi behind. Mamimi is sending mixed signals and advances to Naota, and he doesn’t know what to do about her. But to make matters worse, Naota’s world is totally turned upside down when he is run over by a woman on a Vespa. During their first encounter, she hits him over the head with her guitar, which then causes a horn to grow out of his forehead. She calls herself “Haruko” and her presence changes Naota’s life to even further insanity.

Enjoy!

FLCL I can barely explain how good this show is. My favorite aspects of art, in general, are minimal

FLCL

I can barely explain how good this show is. My favorite aspects of art, in general, are minimalism and efficiency — i.e. achieving the most meaning with the smallest number of elements possible — and FLCL succeeds in this, as well as everything else it does. In a mere 6 episodes, this series accomplishes more than most anime do in years of running — and FLCL does it well.

I’ll go ahead and answer question 1: the title, FLCL, is pronounced here in America as ‘Fooly Cooly.’ What it means is less important than how well it fits the series. Just as the title doesn’t quite make sense on first glance, neither does the series. On the surface, it’s quite bizzare, actually. Naota, the main character, is a 12 year old boy, living in the exceedingly boring town of Mabase; the only remarkable — and it is remarkable — feature is the giant, constantly steaming, clothing iron shaped structure at the center of the town, named Medical Meccanica. Say goodbye to boring, though, as the enigmatic, and strangely beautiful space pirate, Haruhara Haruko lands in town and nearly kills Naota by running him over with a Vespa and bashing him over the head with a guitar.

The series is on from here.

FLCL explores so many elements that it is almost tough to contain. Beneath its bizarre exterior is so much meaning — relationships, maturity, immaturity, dependence, independence, sexual tension, actual love, violence, pain, courage, and heroism are actually just a few. Naota becomes the center of a 3-way fight between the government, Medical Meccanica, and Haruko, who is searching for a god-like space pirate named Atomsk, so that she may free him. Little did Naota know, but the guitar slam to the head he received at the opening of the series opened the ‘N.O’ channel in his head, which releases powerful abilities that Haruko needs to achieve her goal.

The main — and my favorite — story element is Naota’s need to be seen as mature and calm, no matter what his true feelings, progressively broken down throughout the series, until he finally proclaims his love for Haruko, in a visually stunning and action packed ending — which is true maturity.

I could spend another entry on the visual presentation of the show AND the music, alone. The way the show looks is just as important and unique as any other element — the style is wild, varied, exciting, and trippy, at one point even portraying a scene in a heavily animated manga style set to a hard rock music background. The music is mainly old school rock and roll, and the medley of intense guitar riffs somehow ends up fitting the clearly Japanese setting perfectly. You’ll be air-guitaring the ending theme for weeks after watching it, I promise.

The show is legit. Once again, the golden triangle of elements is present and excellent: animation quality, action, and story. Haruko’s overt and blatant (synonyms, I know) sexuality doesn’t hurt the series either.

“Furi Kuri … Furiiii … Kuri!”

You’ll understand if you watch the show … and look out for Lord Kanti.

NO SPOILERS so WELCOME.

Sakuran.

Months ago, I came up with what I thought was a great idea for a post. I was going to call it The Power behind the Throne. It’d start off with a great big pic of J-Pop singer Ringo Shiina…I never got as far as deciding which pic to use but I might as well tell you that my favorite is one in which she’s pointing a great big gun at her temple and smiling (in a wedding dress, of all things) but anyways….

The post was going to trot out (bullet style) several facts about Ringo (all conveniently culled from her Wikipedia article and elsewhere) and her relations with anime, such as:

a) Ringo being the inspiration behind the title character in the manga Nana.

b) Ringo being the inspiration for the character of Haruko Haruhara in FLCL.

Moreover, I wasn’t going to mention, because at the time it wasn’t related to anime, that

c) Ringo was the inspiration for a certain sassy nurse in some guy’s psychiatric novel that is now being adapted to the animated screen as Kuhchuh Buranko (aka Trapeze)!!!

Anyway, after that I was going to suggest, discreetly, that examining sources in anime by just focusing on other anime and classical Japanese tradition, without looking at the immediate context of Japanese contemporary culture, was folly. Look at Shiina etc etc QED.

Sakuran...

Looking back, I’m glad that I thought the post over and decided it would be a lot of BS and little else. For one thing, manga and anime have influenced pop culture in Japan too, so it’s a two way street. And foreign influences have to be taken into account too. There just didn’t seem to be a point to making a post about something obvious while not having anything new or interesting to say about it…other than plastering some nice pics of Ringo on my blog, that is.

So that post never saw the light of day. Now, about a month ago I learned that Moyoco Anno (Hideki Anno’s wife, but believe it or not the surnames are actually spelled differently and they just happened to choose homophonic pennames before ever meeting each other) [BTW, a child of Hideki's and Moyoco's would bring about a world revolution, I think] was celebrating this year the 20th anniversary of her manga debut. To join in the festivities, I sat down and read Sakuran.

The story of an unbearably rude peasant girl and her rise to the coveted position of oiran ( = prostitute goddess extraordinaire of the Edo period) has that quirky Moyoco character design (where essentially, if you simply look at the characters without any preconceptions, it dawns on you that they look like monsters, energetic, willfull monsters!) and a story that’s very Japanese, in the sense that it really goes nowhere.

Sakuran???

A film was made of this, and I just saw it yesterday. The film is visually stunning, and the casting is just as stunning. If you must know, two of my favorite celebrities in Japan are Miho Kanno and Yoshino Kimura, and each of them plays an oiran in this film (Shohi and Takao)!! The third oiran, the protagonist Higurashi, is played by Anna Tsuchiya, who I don’t know at all but she does a very good job here.

The original Sakuran manga is barely a volume long, and it seems to stop halfway. The movie actually covers the manga in the first hour, and then proceeds to come up with its own ending in the second hour. I found the second hour nice, but definitely more conventional than the crazy first half (Sakuran means confusion, and is not etymologically related to sakura blossoms, although……).

The other interesting fact here, and the reason why this post is coherent (despite what you may think) is that Ringo Shiina is all over this film: her album Heisei Fuzoku serves as the soundtrack…which is odd, as the music is very modern and some of the songs are even in English!

??????

But wait, it isn’t odd…because Anna Tsuchiya, who plays the main oiran in the film, is half-American. Which shows again how silly (because how incomplete and myopic) my original idea for what has mutated into this post was: influences firing off back and forth, no boundaries, flow, flow, flow. It’s dumb to take about powers behind the throne, when quite simply THERE IS NO THRONE.

Anyway, read and watch Sakuran…and watch FLCL and Trapeze while you’re at it too… There is no throne, but power is still wielded about, and Shiina has lots of it!

Sakuran.

A post inspired by the poll on Cello’s blog, which is awesome in case you’ve never been

A post inspired by the poll on Cello’s blog, which is awesome in case you’ve never been there. Basically, this poll made me think about what I like more, Anime Films, or Anime Series. Personally, I think that the answer is pretty clear, as anime movies tend to always be superior to anime series.

Anime Movies

When I was at a party in Brooklyn this past weekend, they were playing this movie on a projector. Not only was I very surprised to see anime at a party, but I also busted in my pants, and then ignored it, because hey, I was at a party, and there was a fucking live DJ, so you know I was grinding with Asians (one asian....once) We mainly just made up retarded dance moves that kick ass.

Anime movies win here because rarely do I see an anime movie that disappoints me to the point where I don’t want to keep watching it. The worst movie that I ever saw was probably A Kite, well, statistically, that’s the worst, but I also look at all of the Naruto movies and One Piece movies for being pretty shitty. Still, those movies aren’t half as bad as many of the shows that I’ve seen. For a full list of my movies you can look at “The List” page up at the top.

So, what makes anime movies so great? I’ll list and explain with bullets today:

Plot

For one thing, movies are able to incorporate an entire plot, beginning, middle, climax, and end, into a short, 1-2 hour time period, which usually yields better results for those who want to take in an entire story, but don’t want to spend a day or so doing it. This also rings true for anime movies that are based off of a series, as the movie usually contains the same characters, albeit a different and usually unrelated story line. In case you didn’t understand the point I was trying to say, here’s an example:

InuYasha is an awesome show, we all I know this. Likewise, InuYasha movies are awesome too, in accordance with Glo’s Law. They never have any real correlation to the plot in the manga/visual novel/video game/anime series/pachinko game/etc, but that’s what makes them great.

Doesn’t that make them like…..giant fillers?

No you giant fuck-head! A movie such as InuYasha: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass is not just a long filler. It’s an entertaining side story with a cool plot, bad guys, etc. I mean, if you look at it that way, isn’t any non-main plot related episode or side-story just a filler? I mean, what’s the difference between some anime series related movies and regular anime series filler arcs (notice I said filler arcs. This will come into play again later in this post). Wow, I got way off track.

Basically: Anime Movies have great plots.

Animation

Name me an anime movie with horrible animation, and I’ll tell you that I probably haven’t seen it. The movie with the best animation that I’ve seen was probably definitely one of the films by the great Hayao Miyazaki. Although I don’t know which one. I liked Ponyo because it was all hand-drawn animation, although Spirited Away was simply amazing. You know, I bet Miyazaki ends up dying in 2012, because that’s when the Apocalypse is supposed to happen, and I can’t imagine any other reason for an Apocalypse. I still hold on to my belief that Miyazaki is immortal.

Anime Series

This show was fucking awesome and probably won't ever come off of my top ten....unless it does.

Now, when I say that I think anime movies are better than series, I obviously don’t mean that anime series are by any means bad. I mean, right now, I can’t get enough anime. All I want to do lately is watch anime (or play soccer, which I CAN’T FUCKIN DO BECAUSE INTRAMURALS AT CCSU ARE RETARDED AND SHITTY!). But there are certainly differences between them, the major difference being:

Time

Obviously, an anime series is going to be longer, and take longer to watch, than pretty much any anime movie. I mean, sure some anime are short (FLCL), but for the most part, you’re going to find it more difficult watching an entire series in one sitting than a movie. Of course, one good aspect of this is:

Progression and Character Development

Usually, due to the amount of time we spend watching an anime series in comparison to a movie, we end up seeing more character depth and development in series (except K-ON, which is just stupid). A good example of this is a show which I just completed, Touch (I’ve been saying a lot about this show of late…I also just watched Daisuke shut down the Angels, and was comparing him to Tatsuya as he pitched). The character development in Touch was phenomenal, as it should be, seeing as it’s 101 episodes (and two movies I have yet to see……5 if you want to get technical). The plot can also be more intricate, of course, with that being said, lengthy anime (even some non lengthly anime) can also have drawbacks, and I think you know what I’m talking about here….

Fillers

I already talked about fillers. To me, a filler isn’t a couple episodes that have nothing to do with the main plot. To me, a filler is one or maybe two episodes that by themselves have nothing to do with the main plot….well….sort of. I’m more defining bad fillers, because there could be good fillers. I already talked about the Bleach Bount arc (which I didn’t even know was a filler until weeks after it ended….I don’t read the manga…in fact I’ve stopped watching the show). This is an entire arc, and entire arcs can be entertaining. A good example of a shitty filler (which is the usual type of filler) would be this shit. Or this shit. Or any of this shit. Get it? If there’s a whole arc, with a bad guy, premise, etc, then I don’t really tend to get annoyed, just don’t make a shitload of Naruto fillers that are all one episode and all similar in some way (I still watched them all, just like a champ).

Fucking End

So yea, This was a filler. Good filler or bad filler? All in all I just like the way that movies are put together. I’m sort of running out of good ones to watch, so if you see any that aren’t on my list, feel free to give me some good ones. This leaves me with a question:

What do you like more, movies or series?

“There’s nothing amazing here, just the norm” I first heard that quote from Ta-kun

“There’s nothing amazing here, just the norm”

I first heard that quote from Ta-kun from FLCL. I just watched the first episode even though I have all the episodes. I think It’s a great anime but I still do not have the time to watch it.

I’ve been a little depressed lately but I don’t know the reason why, there’s just a lot of mixed feelings that’s difficult to understand. Thinking about that quote made me think that there’s nothing amazing happening to me or around me, just the norm. I do not have anything amazing that I want to do, sometimes I want to scold or blame myself because of the simple-minded person that I am. Having these thoughts gives an aching feeling inside me. In the end, I’m just making myself confused.

I am currently listening to the song of “The Pillows” entitled “One Life”. I heard this song in the first episode of FLCL. I really like the lyrics of this song, especially this

No matter what kind of shoes I wear, if I walk, I leave footprints
And until one day they stop, they’re the proof that I’ll finish…
…One life

Everyday I try to live my life as easy and comfortable as I can (hindi naman nangyayri T_T) and at the same time put up with all the responsibilities I gave to myself. I’m still struggling, doing what I can while I’m still here. Even though in my life, the things that I do are just small, I still want to think that I am leaving footprints behind even though small they’re still there, just like other people in this vast shore. Even if the time comes that my footprints stopped, I know that I left my mark, my life.
