The machine that will take me through this voyage deserves some words. Can you imagine Star Trek having the magnitude it has without the fleet of beautiful beasts it displays? The vessel is just as important as everything else.

My machine is comparable to the ships only in terms of beauty, nothing more, unfortunately. It’s simple and sleek white in colour with the perfect curves. The little (compared to the ships of Star Fleet) beast inside my machine has a beautiful and powerful mind as it runs Mac OS X 10.6 in a brain of 2.4 GHz with a memory of 2 GB. It’s not one of the Enterprise Series but it runs well and is just as loved.

The mind that is so eager to go on the journey with this machine is a simple one with big dreams and craving for adventure and challenge. It is average but hungry to grow beyond itself. It will have to be adequate for the journey ahead.

Canadian Vehicle Fleets Can Now Share the Same Cost Savings and Easy Benefits Enjoyed by FleetMatics Clients Worldwide

December 1, 2009 – FleetMatics, a leading provider of GPS vehicle tracking technology, recently made its service available to serve small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in Canada.

Like in much of the rest of the world, Canadian SMBs have struggled to maintain profitability during the current economic crisis. But businesses with vehicle fleets face the additional challenges of volatile fuel costs and lack of control over their mobile assets.

The best business operators in the market are turning to GPS tracking as one additional way to improve their business performance and profitability. By offering Canadian SMBs with vehicle fleets a cost-effective GPS tracking solution FleetMatics can help reduce costs, improve productivity and increase operational efficiencies.

“As the competitive landscape for GPS vehicle tracking continues to evolve, we are excited about this latest move. Providing our software to the Canadian GPS marketplace further demonstrates the wide appeal of our unique solution,” said Jim Travers, FleetMatics CEO. “Our customers consistently tell us that our GPS tracking is the easiest solution to use and we are certain Canadian business owners will find this to be true. With best-in-class post-sale support and continued product enhancements, FleetMatics looks to continue to capture market share, demonstrate our operational excellence and deliver continued strong fiscal growth.”

FleetMatics GPS fleet tracking works by placing a module in each vehicle to monitor location, speed, idle time, and engine start up and shut down. This information is transmitted via satellite for up-to-the minute tracking and can be accessed by authorized personnel from any Internet-enabled device.

The system compiles this information into management reports that business owners can use to encourage fuel efficient driving habits, prevent cost-leakage and improve accountability of mobile employees. With its ease of use, cost-effective pricing model, system reliability and unparalleled support, the FleetMatics GPS Vehicle Tracking Solution provides nearly immediate results for SMBs.

“FleetMatics has helped us make sure our employees are doing what they are supposed to be doing,” said Mike Mansfield, QHSE Manager of BOS Solutions, a leader in drilling fluid recovery to the oil and gas industry in Alberta, Canada. “We now know that our employees are complying with laws and policies when out on the road. For example, the speeding alerts have helped us ensure our drivers are driving safely and efficiently.”

One of the many benefits of Fleet GPS Tracking is the improvement in driver safety ratings for your drivers. It does this by monitoring the speed each of your vehicles in your fleet are going. And while speeding, per se, may not cause accidents, it does account for a lack of safety.

Many people are confused about speeding. It is not simply a matter of going above the posted speed limit. Speeding, in this case, is defined by driving too fast for current road conditions. Contrary to what many people think, speed limits are not just set randomly. Speed limits are a calculation of the highest possible speed a car can safely travel given the condition of the road.

Bottom-line, speeding has a detrimental effect on your driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding lengthens the distance required to stop a vehicle in an emergency. Driving too fast doesn’t allow drivers enough time to react to traffic signals such as red lights or stop signs, or other potential hazards that may be present, like children darting into traffic.

Accidents can be avoided by having best practices for your fleet and one of the key points is Fleet GPS Tracking. FleetMatics has one of the best systems on the road. Why not take a test drive?

November began with my first of two Zag days. Yes, that’s two zag days in two weeks, but it was the second of five Fleet parties in a row(anf I’m missing the next three). So it began with an Early breakfast the day of the party, which included a hamburger and a piece of carmel apple pie. Lunch was at a local Vegan restaurant and was Divine. All the food was completely vegan. I had bread, salad, spaghetti salad, a potato dish I did not understand, butternut squash pancakes and an apple pastry dessert with apple and butternut squash sorbets, along with fresh squeezed apple juice infused with lavender to drink. Dinner was an odd assortment of foods created by various members of fleet including, but not limited to: sweet bacon crackers, pork and beans, deviled eggs, a cream puff, chocolate chip and bacon cookies, brownies and garlic bread. I drank mostly coke & stuff throughout the night to end my zag.

As for the rest of the week, things went fairly typically. I’m back down to one Enbrel shot every two weeks, for a couple reasons, but most notably, I’m feeling pretty good. My elbow is still it’s usual ornery self, but nothing seems to change that. I see my Doctor today, so we’ll have some things to talk about. Including some three months without health insurance as Rich has accepted a new job doing tech support.

Car owners often have relationships with their cars. I know I’ve had a few. My first vehicle was the family fart-mobile, a 1991 Mercury Sable named “Mable”. Mable the Sable. I grew up as an outdoorsy girl in Utah, so in my years driving Mable, I often took her places that the average family fart-mobile isn’t supposed to go (middle-of-nowhere Utah is full of dirt and mud, ruts, and 100+ degree temperatures)! A little stroke on the dashboard and the words “Come on Mable, come on!” always seemed to pull us through the rough spots. Amazingly, I was never stranded in the middle of the desert with a brokendown car, and I have Mable to thank.

But now car owning is taboo. Who needs a car if you can walk, bike, bus and carshare your way around your life? There is nowhere to park anyway, and owning a car in Ithaca is like wearing a neon sign on your head that says “I’m making the problem worse!” So for us carsharers, the personal car goes out the window and with it, all of the aforementioned sentimentality.

But don’t worry Ithaca Carsharers, the days of making a reservation on “Vehicle 6185, a hatchback, due back at…” are soon to be over. We are naming our cars and we need your help! Submit a name idea for your favorite car to fleet@ithacacarshare.org. People submitting winning names will get a very cool prize. (Prize TBA.) Extra points go to names that relate to location, local history or other interesting (or dull) trivia.

We keep our cars in good enough shape that you definitely won’t have to coo their new names while stroking their dashboards just to keep them running (granted nobody drives them into the Utah desert), but naming our cars will make our fleet more lovable, fun to drive, and easier to remember. You don’t even have to be an Ithaca Carshare member to enter the contest (though if you’re not, you should be!), so submit an idea today and your name may be the one to give a very boring car some personality!

With SeaBart’s postings possibly a bit intermittent, I’ll try my best to keep everyone entertained.

-Fairlane

Destia Ferry Services

So, I know ferries have gotten more than their fair share of ridicule on this site, but the fact is, there seems to be an endless source of repugnant ferry designs plying the world’s waterways.

Part of the problem may be that ferries, especially open decked examples, are often designed more with utility than beauty in mind, and most of the time, in my opinion, remote waterway crossings can get away with having an affordable, albeit unnattractive, ferry.

However, sometimes things can go overboard, which seems to be the case of Destia Lines, which provide over half of the ferry service to Finland. It’s not just one, but it’s a fleet, and they are all painted a blinding shade of yellow. That may not be a bad thing, you may want to be blinded from seeing them.

Prostvik I

My best guess is some0ne decided that since it carries vehicles, it should ape one of its “brethren.” The only problem, aircraft carrier design features don’t fit too well on something this small.

Falco

At least this one bears some semblance of conventionality (which isn’t saying much). However, it looks like someone decided to make it their little pet postmodern art project. If there’s actually a need for all the random protrusions on the superstructure, I have no idea.

Odil

This one looks slightly better. However, the overhead gantries can stick to hoisting nets on the backs of fishing trawlers or holding highway signs in my opinion.

Nagu 2

This may be the least repulsive of the fleet. In fact, other than imitating a taxi cab, there is much to ridicule this one for.

Actually, on second thought, maybe they could stand to be a bit brighter yellow. I can still see too much of them.

Ethelred the Unready, he was called. Unready in those days meaning, ‘ill advised,’ or ‘bad policy.’

Ethelred’s father, King Edgar, 943 to 975 AD had died suddenly in July of 975, leaving two young sons behind him. The elder, Edward was Edgar’s son by his first wife, Ethelflæd, and was described as ‘a youth on the verge of manhood,’ in 975. The younger son, by Edgar’s second wife Elfthryth was Ethelred. Edgar had married her in 964. At the time of his father’s death, Ethelred could have been no more than 10 years old. As the elder of Edgar’s sons, Edward claimed the throne but a number of English nobles opposed Edward’s succession and thought that Ethelred should be king. Ethelred was, after all, the son of Edgar’s last, living wife. It was the brothers’ supporters, and not the brothers themselves, who were responsible for the arguments which accompanied the choice of a successor to the throne. Ethelred’s claim was led by his mother and included the Earldorman of Mercia and the Bishop of Winchester, while Edward’s claim was supported by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Archbishop of York with the Earldorman of Essex and many other nobles. Edward’s supporters proved the more powerful and persuasive, and he was crowned king. Edward reigned for only three years before he was murdered by his brother’s household. Edward was killed at Ethelred’s estate in March of 978, recorded at the time by monastic writers. ‘Relations with Ethelred and his mother were very friendly and he was visiting them informally when he was set upon by the servants, who came out to meet him. They stabbed him before he could dismount.’ As far as can be seen the murder was planned and carried out by the servants of Ethelred’s household so that their young master would become king. No one was punished for the crime, and Ethelred, was crowned a month after the murder. According to one chronicler, the coronation of Ethelred took place with much rejoicing. Another states that when Ethelred was consecrated king by The Archbishop of Canterbury, ‘there was great joy at his consecration’, and describes the king as ‘a young man in respect of years, elegant in his manners, with an attractive face and handsome appearance.’ He was about thirteen years of age at this time.

England had experienced a period of peace after the reconquest of East Anglia and Northumbria in the mid-10th century by Ethelred’s father. However, beginning in 980, when Ethelred could not have been more than 14 years old, small bands of Danish Vikings carried out a series of coastal raids against England. Wessex was attacked in 981, and 982. A period of 6 years then passed before, in 988, another coastal attack is recorded taking place to the south-west, though here a famous battle was fought between the invaders and the defenders of Devon. During this period, the Normans, who remembered their origins as Scandinavians supported the Danish raiders by giving them sanctuary at ports in Normandy. This led to tension between the English and Norman courts, and word of the hostility eventually reached Pope John 15th The pope acted as a go between and took steps to engineer a peace between England and Normandy, which was eventually ratified in 991.

But in August of that same year a sizeable Danish fleet began a campaign in the south-east of England. It arrived off Kent and made its way around the south-east coast and sailed up the Blackwater river to the town of Maldon in Essex. A fierce battle was fought but the townsfolk were overwhelmed. This was the first of a series of crushing defeats the English would suffer at the hands of Danish raiders, followed by large Danish armies.

After the defeat at Maldon, it was decided that the English should grant the Danes what they wanted, and 10,000 pounds was paid to them to keep the peace. But the Danish fleet that had taken Maldon continued to plunder the English coast from 991-93. In 994, the Danish fleet, gaining in confidence and swollen in ranks since 991, turned into the Thames estuary and headed towards London. The battle fought here was inconclusive. Ethelred met with the leaders of the Danish fleet and arranged a truce. Ethelred signed a peace treaty with the Danes and paid them 22,000 pounds of gold and silver.

In 997 Danish raids began again. Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and South Wales were attacked and plundered. In 998 Hampshire, Dorset and Sussex were attacked and in 999 Kent was again raided. In the year 1000 the Danes left England because the English had refused further ‘Dane payment,’ or Danegeld..

In 1001 a Danish fleet returned and ravaged West Sussex. The fleet had its base in the Isle of Wight. The raids were beginning again. There was an attempted attack in the south of Devon, but the Danes were beaten off. Ethelred again bought a truce for 24,000 pounds. His payments of immense Danegelds are often held up as the inefficiency of his government and his own incompetence.

In 1002, Ethelred decided that the Danish men who occupied England had to go, so he issued an order that they were all to be killed. A ridiculous order like this could not be carried out as the Danes were too strong, but some were killed and Gunhilde, sister of Sweyn Forkbeard, the King of Denmark, was among the victims. Sweyn’s invasion of western England the following year was in revenge for her death. By 1004 Sweyn was in East Anglia, but here he met heavy opposition. The Danes suffered heavy losses. The Danish army left England for Denmark in 1005, perhaps because of their injuries sustained in East Anglia, perhaps from the very severe famine which afflicted the continent and the British Isles in that year. An invasion the following year was bought off in early 1007 by Danegeld money of 36,000 pounds, which bought England two years peace. Then the Danish army of 1009, led by Thorkell and his brother Hemming invaded again. It was the most formidable force to invade England since Ethelred became king. It wreaked havoc in England until it was bought off by 48,000 pounds in April 1012.

Sweyn then launched an all out invasion in 1013. He was determined to conquer England and make himself King. By the end of 1013 English resistance had collapsed and Sweyn had conquered the country. Ethelred fled to Normandy. The next year everything suddenly changed when Sweyn died on 3 February 1014. The Danes now gave their allegiance to Sweyn’s son Canute, but the English leaders sent a deputation to Ethelred to negotiate his restoration. If he would promise to be true to them and to reform everything they had complained about, forgive all that had been said and done against him, they would back him in his claim to the throne.

Ethelred then launched an expedition against Canute and his armies. Canute’s army had not completed its preparations, and in April 1014 he decided to withdraw from England without a fight, abandoning his claim. The debacle damaged the young and inexperienced Canute’s prestige, but in August 1015 he was able to launch a new invasion and returned to England. Meanwhile, Edmund Ironside, Ethered’s son had revolted against his father and raised an army to overthrow him. With Canute now on the scene, men flocked to join Edmund against both Canute and Ethelred. They were tired of Ethelred’s stupid policies. Over the next months, Canute conquered most of England, and Edmund, seeing how strong the Danes were, rejoined Ethelred to defend London. Ethelred died on 23 April 1016, and the war between Edmund and Canute ended with victory for Canute at the Battle of Ashingdon on 18 October 1016.

Edmund’s reputation as a warrior was so great that Canute decided to give Wessex to Edmund while he ruled the rest of the country. However, Edmund died on 30 November and Canute became king of the whole country.
