Grand Archives hade lite dassig timing med deras första självbetitlade skiva. Den släpptes i samma veva som Fleetfoxes fantastiska debut, hade samma melodiösa driv och fantastiska harmonier men drunknade i bruset från den. Vi får se om de lyckas få ett större genomslag med Keep in mind Frankenstein och nya singeln Oslo Novelist.

Jag postar en låt från första skivan också eftersom många sorgligt nog verkar ha missat den.

Okay, so you saw the most important frivilous post about the Brige School Benefit; now on to the serious stuff. I really did have a great time spending the day with my family; it is a rare occasion when all of us get together at a venue outside of my parents’ home, so to be out in the sun enjoying music that we all (mostly) like was definitely a treat. I have been to the Bridge School Benefit a few times, several years ago now. Most memorably, my best friend Shelly and I went one year when it was pouring rain, but Tom Petty was playing that year, and we are both die-hard Tom Petty and Neil Young fans, so we invested in some cheap, plastic, yellow ponchos and endured the rain, which lasted for the entirety of the concert. We didn’t care, though; we were 18 or 20 and, of course, invincible then. This year, the weather was fabulous . . . a little too fabulous, even, at first, as we were baking in the hot sun. Luckily for Gavin Rossdale, the sun was shining a little too hard and this girl and her family needed a break: exit Robby, and well, you can read this post for the rest of the story.

Musically, we had quite a treat. Gavin “Loverboy” Rossdale opened the show with a great set where I fell in love with him all over again. One of my first concerts was seeing Bush when I was 15, and although that Bush concert was a little more rockin’ than Gavin’s Bridge School acoustic set, it took me back to those adolescent land of butterflies-in-the-tummy-while-staring-at-the-MTV-screen days. I appreciate so much more now the sex that’s in Gavin’s voice; I almost slid off the lawn in a swoon. Needless to say, it was a great opening to the show.

The next few acts, Wolfmother, Fleetfoxes, and Monsters of Folk, were bands I hadn’t heard of, but ones that put on a great show. Wolfmother, who hails from Australia, rocked the house despite being limited to acoustic instruments. They have a Led-Zeppelin-esque sound that appeals to both young and old crowds. I had heard that Fleetfoxes has a Beach Boys vibe going on, but when I heard them, they were more a combination of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young and Simon and Garfunkle than anything else. They did, indeed, employ some beautiful harmonies that you don’t hear too much anymore. Monsters of Folk ended up being an amalgamation of bands that I had heard of, including Bright Eyes with Conor Oberst, whom I like. They did some of their own songs as well as songs from Bright Eyes that I recognized. The latter two bands were the mellowest of the line-up, and it was during this time that I had my rendezvous with Gavin, so I can’t really give a full report on this section.

Next up was Sheryl Crow, and I am not a huge fan of hers, but she IS a good performer. She played some old, familiar tunes that I couldn’t help but sing a long to (you know–the ones they play on the radio all the time) and some newer ones I didn’t recognize. I liked the fact that she didn’t fall into the old cliche of Santa Monica Boulevard. For the first time that day, she got pretty much everyone on his or her feet with “Soak Up the Sun” at the end of her set. Good job, Sheryl.

Following Sheryl was funnyman Adam Sandler, who cracked us all up, even my mom (and I think my dad might have even cracked a smile; my parents HATE Adam Sandler). For all of his goofiness, he really IS a good musician and put a fine arrangement on all of his songs. He gave us the classics like “Lunchlady Land,” “Dip Doodle, “Seven-Foot Man,” “Chanukah Song,” and “Listenin’ to the Radio.” This was my niece Savanna’s favorite act of the night–she’s a HUGE Adam Sandler fan . . . and she’s only seven.

Next up was the eccentric Chris Martin of Coldplay, who dazzled me with his charisma and mean piano-playing skills. I’m a HUGE Coldplay fan and saw them a couple of years ago in concert where there was an amazing light show and a few other tricks up their sleeves. So, it was nice to see Chris Martin stripped down to just his piano and his violin player, singing straight from the heart. He played a lot of Coldplay songs that people would recognize, including “Clocks, “Yellow,” “Vivia La Vida,” and “Lost” (one of my favorites), but also did a BEAUTIFUL cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “My Love Will Not Let You Down,” Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag,” and The Penguins’ “Earth Angel,” for which he solicited audience participation (that was super fun, Chris!). His violinist was a nice accompaniment to the piano and added quite a bit of depth to the music.

After Chris Martin was the “highlight” of the night, No Doubt with Gwen Stefani (Hey, Gwen: Can I have your personal trainer’s number?). This is a band that I’ve also seen live with, again, lots of tricks up their sleeves. Stripped down, though, they sounded even better to me–more authentic and more intimate. Of course, the venue has a lot to do with it (I saw them and Coldplay at the same huge arena with nosebleed seats), but there’s just something about the voice being the main instrument that really allows the artist to connect with the audience. Gwen was also the only artist to get up and mingle with the Bridge School students, who sit on stage and watch the concert the whole time. The cameras were able to capture and project onto the big screen what a thrill the kids got from being able to mingle with a rock star; I’m sure some of the boys get just as must of a “thrill” as any other boy would, if you know what I mean. Anyway, No Doubt’s set was full of life and energy, as if there was any doubt.

The man himself, Neil Young, took the stage with his wife Pegi to close the show, signing many of his classics and mellowing things out after a high-energy performance. The man has still got it: even after brain surgery and various other trials and tribulations, he knows how to rock. He sounds greater than ever, and it is always a pleasure to see one of my all-time favorite artists perform solo, with his wife, and join in intermittently with the other artists.

I just have to say that I think that Neil and Pegi Young are some of the finest examples of socially responsible celebrities out there today. Here are two people who recognized a need in their community, had the means to begin to make it work, had no idea whether it was going to take off or not, and believed in it enough to get others on board to make it a success through perseverence and hard work. I really admire their dedication and willingness to give their time and money to ensure that the Bridge School is, and will continue to be, successful.

Congratulations, Neil and Pegi, on another ROCKIN’ year!

On Sunday, I went to the annual Bridge School Benefit at the Shoreline Ampitheatre in Mountain View, CA with my family. Gavin Rossdale (formerly of Bush), Fleetfoxes, Wolfmother, Monsters of Folk, Adam Sandler, Sheryl Crow, Chris Martin (of Coldplay), No Doubt, and Neil Young (who, along with his wife Pegi, founded The Bridge School) all played for the cause. I’ll post my review later, but I wanted to leave you with this little teaser of me with hottie Gavin Rossdale, who was out and about on the grounds of Shoreline with his kid. My brother, in his infinite kindness and knowing how doe-eyed I am over GR, ran from one end of the Ampitheatre to the other to get me, not even knowing if Gavy would still be there when we got back. Luckily for Gavin, he decided to stay put at the tepee with his kid and have the pleasure of taking his picture with me.

The Newport Folk Festival celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. We’ll be there on Saturday, August 1. Here’s a playlist featuring some of the acts I expect to see (and led me to favor Saturday over Sunday, despite the fact that Neko Case is playing on Sunday).

Het zit er weer op. Vier bloedhete dagen vol muziek en ook vooral vol mensen. Een overvolle weide, het zal nooit mijn ding zijn. Laat mij maar op mijn gemak een optreden bekijken voor het podium, niet honderden meters ervan (als je geluk hebt). Nuja, een mens moet iets overhebben voor zo’n affiche. Puntje van kritiek: het geluid van de mainstage waaide vrolijk door tot aan de Marquee. Als  je niet door de geluidshinder gestoord wou worden moest je al goed vooraan in de tent gaan staan. Maar dan nu, waarom ik dit eigenlijk schrijf, een korte neerslag van de groepen die ik zag. Zondag heb ik niets neergepend, het is tenslotte de heilige rustdag voor iets.

Boston is currently getting its third snowstorm of late December. It’s good weather to have soup for lunch, and to listen to “White Winter Hymnal,” or, better yet, to watch the video.

That said, I don’t really get Fleet Foxes: the band, or the self-titled, highly-acclaimed album. I like it, but don’t see what the fuss is about. Also high on this year’s “like but why the fuss?” list is TV on the Radio’s Dear Science.

I recently re-remembered one of my favorite things on earth.  That would be Concerts à Emporter, which Steve introduced me to last year.  The concept is impromptu song-playing performed by touring bands as they wander through the streets of Paris.  Added bonus of dreamy handheld cinematography and greenish light and glimpses of the beautiful city. So I watched the Fleet Foxes video, and even though I’m not a huge Fleet Foxes fan, it was enough to put those Takeaway Concerts right where they belong — on my bookmark bar, next to my heart.

TUSSEN DE SOEP EN DE PATATTEN

Hoe erg is het gesteld met je geestelijke gezondheid als je het plezant vindt om sneller dan Van Molle ze kan geven de antwoorden die je niet weet te googelen tijdens het bekijken van De Canvascrack? In de hoeveelste hemel (of hel) vertoef je als je met een open autokoffer (van een stationwagon) zonder je van enig kwaad bewust te zijn (horen? niets!) in de gietende regen van A. naar H. rijdt (7 km)? Hoe worldwidewebgewend ben je wanneer je enthousiast naar je moeder sprint om samen met haar 350 foto’s die je doorgemaild kreeg (de link naar een webalbum uiteraard!) te bekijken op je laptop en daar vast te stellen dat je daarvoor internet nodig hebt en zij dat niet heeft. (Ahja! Ahneen!). Welke Freudiaanse verklaring zou er zitten achter dromen over De Blauwe Ford Escort Cabrio Met Volledig Blauw Lederen Interieur Uniek in België van Tom Boonen die je van zijn garagist die hem gestolen had gekregen hebt en die Tom in volledige koersuitrusting én met roodharige jongensachtige brildragende vriendin komt opeisen in een compleet vervallen kantoorgebouw waar je aan een voorhistorische computer zit.

Mijn vandaag afgewerkt kledingstuk ziet eruit als een overjaars bommakleed, terwijl het het modieus fleurig Marnijurkje ‘08 had moeten zijn wat ik het in gedachten had. Mijn door een vakman aangeplante haag én vijgeboom zijn dood. Mijn kat wordt maar niet beter, amputatie of in het ergste geval euthanasie lijkt het vooruitzicht. Mijn zevende loodgieter komt ook weer niet opdagen en de achtste neemt zijn telefoon niet meer op omdat de bouwvakantie begonnen is. Ik maak nog maar eens de zoveelste emmer opgevangen water leeg. Ik draai de LP in beluistering om en realiseer me dat we dat we het voor het bestaan van de CD nooit lastig vonden om de twintig minuten recht te staan omdat kant A afgespeeld was en dan weer kant B. Mijn experiment “kom honderd gram aan per dag wanneer je werkloos bent een sabbatjaar neemt” blijkt een grandioos succes te zijn.

Ik weet nog steeds niet wanneer ik ” of ‘ moet zetten, ondanks de lessen die ik bij Plasky probeer te volgen. Mijn zinsconstructies zullen nooit vlot leesbaar of begrijpelijk zijn en mijn zinnen blijven te lang. Er is nog veel werk aan de winkel. Ik lees dat Annelies Rutten een hele week heeft om één column af te werken en ik vraag me af of ze dan elk woord en elke zinswending opzoekt en analyseert en eigenlijk vind ik haar ook niet goed. Het meisje dat op dinsdag bier schenkt heeft een poëtische ‘clip tellende omschrijving van het gevoel van de dag‘ rubriek die ik zelf had willen bedenken. Ooit zal het bekend worden welke journalist(e) er achter ‘Georgina‘ zat of welke student soc/com/watdanook deze blog gemaakt heeft in het kader van zijn/haar eindwerk. Of in oktober wordt het boek over het blog-experiment voorgesteld op de boekenbeurs. (Mét uw reacties en een grondige analyse daarvan.)

Ondertussen vraag ik me af hoe erg het eigenlijk is in Avignon. Stel ik vast dat veel mannen dom blijven wat vrouwen betreft die de kunst van het rond de vinger winden onder de knie hebben. Mag Kalita Air nog steeds lustig verder vliegen van en naar Zaventem, heeft het Vlaams Parlement in alle stilte het Verdrag van Lissabon goedgekeurd (formaliteit) en is het bijna vijftien juli. Zijn de kleiputten en Agrex NV alweer vergeten en lijken er daarentegen in de zogenaamde komkommertijd opvallend veel sensationele ongelukken te gebeuren en doden te vallen. Verdienen lastige doden rond de Middellandse Zee dan weer maar twee minuten aandacht in het vakantiejournaal. Bedenk ik nogmaals dat ik ook een spectaculaire dood wil.

Ik had veel zin maar geen tijd om jullie te tippen over een aantal goede programma’s op tv en schone films (@ SJ: Italiaanse filmzomer op Ned!) voor wanneer u niet naar een honderdduizendste herhaling wil kijken. Zelfs al is dat Green Wing dat ik drie jaar geleden al ontdekt heb op BBC maar eigenlijk toch nog steeds niet beugekeken ben. Ik heb door een krantenartikel een fascinerende mens ontdekt waar ik nog nooit van gehoord had en ik betreur het dat ik nog geen duizendste part van zijn genie heb. Ik constateer nog maar eens dat Sophie Hilbrand zonder enige twijfel de mooiste, meest spontane en naturelle vrouw van Nederland is en ik zou eigenlijk nog iets kwijt willen over een bepaald programma dat ze presenteert en over BNN in zijn algemeenheid.

Terwijl erger ik me blauw aan de aanhoudende lezersbrieven in Humo en de dwaze discussie over de zelfstandigen waarbij ik graag zelf eens een boekje zou opendoen over bepaalde KMO’s. Verwonder ik er me over dat er nog niemand gereageerd heeft dat het eigenlijk allemaal gewoon neerkomt op een algemeen gebrek aan solidariteit, nodig in een democratische samenleving of het nu een nietige kleine werknemer, een zelfstandige of een grote aandeelhouder of CEO betreft. Dat er gewoon een categorie mensen is die alleen aan geld en zichzelf denkt.

Ik foeter over de Humo zelf die steeds meer de Story of Dag Allemaal wordt (wat heb ik aan een roddelsessie met een gerateerde miss waarover ik nog nooit gehoord had en wiens naam ik nu dus alweer vergeten ben) en Serge Simonart, die ik nochtans altijd fel geapprecieerd heb, jaagt me de gordijnen in omdat zelfs hij in de val trapt. Ik lees over Fleetfoxes, die meer en meer aandacht krijgen en hoor nog eens dat het goed is. Ik betwijfel of de mening van een reclamemaker en een fotografe in een actua programma relevant is en ik stel vast dat alweer ******tijdelijk geschrapt omdat hier het resultaat van een bepaalde kwis waar een bepaalde blogger aan deelnam hier te lezen was**** , ooit won S. de Knack filmkwis maar toen, net die laatste keer, werd dat niet meer gepubliceerd in de Knack).

Ik zag dat een alom bekend blogger in De Morgen een artikel schreef maar ik kon het helaas niet opbrengen om het te lezen omdat het alweer over die overgehypte I-phone ging, wat me geen bal interesseert en waarvan de talloze berichten me danig op de heupen werken, meer nog, me eveneens fel de strot uitkomen. Ik lees dat ook Tante Annie zich ergert aan de bijlage van De Morgen en de kritische activist in mij bedenkt dat journalisten, en meer bepaald de vrouwen, WAX zouden moeten boycotten want De Morgen is geen damesblad maar een krant en tegelijk besef ik dat dit een onrealistisch droom is. En ik moet dringend een gevatte naam vinden voor mijn domeinnaam die ik nog moet aanvragen en waarvan ik nog niet weet wat ik er ga mee doen maar anders kan ik niet(s) ondernemen. “Dramaqueen‘ heeft mijn zus helaas al geclaimd als u eventueel zou van plan geweest zijn me dat voor te stellen.
