As a little treat to myself and blog anniversary gift (this site turned one year old a few days ago.  I’ll have a birthday post in a bit) I upgraded my flickr.com account.  With the free version of Flickr you get 200 hundred uploads to host images/videos on their site.  Even though I use that them to host the images I post on my blog reaching my free limit was something I never thought would happen.  But to my surprise I had peeked my quota in no time.

Broke down, bit the bullet and shelled out the $24.99 yearly fee for unlimited uploadeds.  Not that what breaks down to a two dollar a month charge is going to send my bank account into a death spiral but it was something I was avoiding.  Whenever I start out with something that I can do for free I find myself kicking and screaming against paying for it.  

After I made peace with having to pry my seldom used credit card out my tightly closed wallet I really got into my improved Flick PRO account.  The PRO gives me the ability to track stats on views my images get not to mention how much more fancier my account looks with “PRO” displayed for all to see.  The “PRO” signals “this guy means business”, “Look out word he’s a professional” and “this guy had a extra 25 bucks to spend on something other than internet porn site”

… und zwar bei Flickr. Bekanntlich arbeite ich seit dem 1. Mai an meinem Projekt “stevenbysteven”, Selbstporträts von mir im Atelier. Die Fotos sind weder aufwendig überlegt (sondern einfach Stativ, 10-Sekunden-Selbstauslöser und fertig), noch werden die Fotos – bis auf ein paar Hautkorrekturen – digital bearbeitet.

Nun habe ich den Rahmen des kostenlosen Accounts gesprengt und musste eben auch nicht lange überlegen, die ca. 16 Euro Gebühren für die Ein-Jahres-Mitgliedschaft auszugeben.

Caroline Bayley’s jarring article, “Buy none, get one free”, details the prospect giving away products for free. Bayley asks the following question:

Is the business model of the future one where the customer no longer pays? Already products in the digital marketplace are being given away free, yet companies are still making profits.

Software – open source applications, browsers, and operating systems – have been given away for free for years. Yet the makers of those products are realizing profits.

Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired magazine, says other industries are adopting the free model.

For instance, numerous opportunities exist for the airlines. Anderson asks what would happen if the airlines offered free flights:

If we can get your attention with the word free, if we can get you in the door with the word free, what else could we do?

What could we do with the traffic? With the credibility that we’ve achieved by offering this extraordinary thing like a free flight?

Maybe cargo pays the way and the passengers ride for free? Or we’re actually a tourism arm of these destinations who are paying us to bring (people) to them.”

Another example, says Anderson, is Flickr, the online photo management and sharing application.

Flickr Basic is free. Flickr Pro is for premium subscribers who have certain needs. They want more storage or they want special features. It only takes a few per cent of people to subscribe to Flickr Pro at a cost to subsidise everybody else who gets Flickr Basic.”

Every time I post a photo on this blog I also upload it to Flickr. I suppose I do this to increase the visibility of my photos and sometimes I want to show someone a photo when i am away from my computer. In any case I am approaching the limit of the free Flickr account (200 photos). 

I can either upgrade to the pro account which would give me unlimited storage (not a problem since I do one medium size photo a day), unlimited uploads (break that 200 photo barrier) and stats on my account, and I am a sucker for stats. I could also start uploading full resolution versions of my photos. 

But it costs twenty-five dollars a year. An alternative solution, or at least temporary, would be to go back and cull out the bad photos I uploaded and just keep the good or popular ones. 

The reason that I do not switch over to say Google’s photo program Picasa is for two reasons. I like the group feature of Flickr and I don’t want to put all of my online presence into one company (I currently use GMail).

Then again twenty-five dollars is not a lot over the course of year. It is only four good burritos (or 2 great ones). 

If only I could make money off of my Flickr photos to pay for the Pro account.

In my travels for the ‘Man’ the other day, I stopped along a small road somewhere west of Bon Accord and liked a lot of the Fall that was happening. The trees of course, but I think I was more drawn to the crispness of the recently cut fields. So I took a bunch of shots with my crappy little camera (not to self: if you’re never going to bring your good camera anywhere, maybe you should just get yourself a good crappy camera!) and a lot were crap (lol, go figure …and it’s not really the camera’s fault) but then some were ok. I put them up on my flickr page, and I happen to notice I’m going through a severe ‘horizon’ phase lately. That’s probably a bad thing – and I’m sure I can shuffle that up if I apply myself. (not to self: apply yourself!) I also had to upgrade to the pro account as I was reaching the 200 picture limit that the free flickr account allows. So if you’re wondering – no, I’m not a pro …but if it makes Yahoo Inc. feel good about making other people feel good about being a pro (?) – then yeah, I guess I’m a pro.

Is ‘procrap’ a word?

so i currently have 170 pictures on my flickr page. when i hit 200 i will need to upgrade to a flickr pro account or i will only be able to view/work with my most current 200 shots.

so does someone want to buy me a years subscription of flickr pro?

Ale! Qué contenta estoy con mi cuenta pro de flickr. Así puedo subir todas las fotos que quiera y ordenarlas en álbumes y colecciones. Este será el paso previo a mi portfolio que espero que esté listo en próximas fechas. Por fin soy pro en algo!!

We just upgraded our Flickr account to the “pro” level, meaning we can upload as many photos as create as many sets as we want.

Flickr is a great photo sharing and management web site provided by Yahoo! It’s free to join, but the free account limits your photo uploads to 200 and your sets to three. The “pro” level costs about $25 a year.

Feel free to browse through our photo collections, steal some, and add us as a contact. American 1 makes a point to take tons of pictures during events. Call us historical, we just like to look back on all the fun we had.

yay, finally i got my flickr pro account after having the flickr account for like 1 year and half and over 270 photos on there, and of course i will be uploading more and more pictures on there, so stay tuned.

Flickr provides an additional level of stats on your photos when you upgrade to Flickr Pro.

After you have upgraded your Flickr account to Flickr Pro, you can get a more detailed breakdown of your photos by using Flickr Stats.

To get access to your Flickr Pro stats, go to the standard Flickr account’s most popular photos, ordered by interestingness feature page under Flickr’s “Your Photos” tab.

Click on Flickr stats to get the following four additional levels of stats.

1. Daily aggregate views on your account

2. Your most viewed photos
