La cosa non è di interesse strettamente letterario ma mi sembra una rappresentazione efficace di cosa si intende per cognizione collettiva e accumulazione di contenuti e, come tale, credo che possa dare un’idea anche dei termini secondo cui si attua la scrittura on line.

Si tratta di questo: http://www.lkozma.net/wpv/, ovvero WikipediaVision, uno script di László Kozma che dà conto, su base geografica e quasi in tempo reale, degli edit fatti sulla Wikipedia in lingua inglese. In altre parole, su una mappa del mondo, si vedono spuntare gli interventi fatti dagli utenti, con la segnalazione della voce interessata, la localizzazione geografica e vari altri particolari. Rimando alle FAQ del sito per chiarimenti.

Consiglio davvero di seguire per qualche minuto l’avvicendarsi degli interventi sulla mappa, considerando i diversi argomenti che vanno a toccare, le distanze geografiche che li separano e la contiguità temporale che li accomuna. Se ci si lascia andare un po’ alla suggestione, si ha l’impressione di percepire il flusso costante del fenomeno Wikipedia (e, più in generale, del web) e la sua natura di evento comunitario, simultaneo e discontinuo.

P.S.: come segnala anche Kozma, l’idea parte da altri due script di Dave Troy, che interessano Twitter e Flickr: Twittervision e Flickrvision. L’effetto che danno è simile ma WikipediaVision, inquadrando i singoli contenuti in un unico progetto, mi sembra che abbia una forza maggiore.

Another post about visual stimuli. This time I have listed below a few interesting sites that show just how global the social media are.

The first is WikipediaVision (beta) created by László Kozma. The site contains a map of the world and, as you watch, you can see what people are editing or contributing to Wikipedia as “anonymous edits to English Wikipedia (almost) in real-time”and where they are based. The map moves as the new entries are added (You can also choose to watch the German, French, Spanish, Swedish edits ). It is powered by Google Chart API.

The idea for WikipediaVision came after László Kozma saw the following sites created by Dave Troy.

• Flickrvision shows real time, geolocated Flickr photos, where the map moves around to show some of the photos being uploaded to Flickr. and

• Twittervision, a real-time geographic visualization of posts to Twitter.

These are addictive when you start to watch.

A re-mixable data source is, by and large, a web site that permits the user to combine the site’s data with information from other sources, in order to create some new informational view. The result is often referred to as a mashup.

The site developers usually provide a set of tools to facilitate the merging of external data into the information offered by their site. These tools are usually referred to under the arcane acronym, API. An Application Programming Interface is like a set of standardized connections into the web site so that mashup creators can incorporate the external material.

These video tutorials demonstrate how the Yahoo Pipes API works.

One of the most common examples of a mashup is the integration of various sorts of data, for example, real estate information, with a map. Google Maps is a good example. Users can create their own maps by adding images, YouTube videos, and other markers.

European campers have used Google maps to show the location of campsites. Then there is the Diaroogle Team whose web site offers a detailed map showing the locations of the public toilets in Manhattan.

Flickrvision is a global slideshow where photographs, as they are uploaded to Flickr, pop up on a map of the world, (in 3D if you wish) indicating the location of the photographer.

Twittervision is a variation on the Flickrvision idea.

One way to better understand the mechanics of creating a mashup is to go to Microsoft’s Popfly. Here is an example of one user’s mashing of Google maps and upcoming concert information.

The mashup is a relatively new idea and its development relies heavily on web site developers creating and enhancing the API’s that enable to combine data from different sources.

So I’ve heard of mashups, but never really understood what they were.  I had known about mashups in music, so I figured “electronic” mashups were similar.  I checked out the Wikipedia entry about mashups and looked at Flickr.  I’ve been using Flickr for a while and I love it.  You can post pictures, assign tags and descriptors to your pictures, view other people’s pictures and comment on them.  There’s a lot more you can do on Flickr, but I’ve only done basic stuff so far.  Anyway, during my search to find information on mashups, I discovered Flickrvision.  It “mashes up” maps and pictures.  You can point to any area on a map of the world and a picture will pop up of something that is happening there right now.  These pictures were all posted less than a minute ago!  I’m going to read more about mashups and maybe even create my own.

David Troy hat die Seite Flickrvision entwickelt. Hier werden auf einer Google-Maps-Weltkarte Bilder, die kurz zuvor auf Flickr hochgeladen wurden und mit Geotags ausgezeichnet sind, angezeigt und verortet.

Wählt man die 3D-Ansicht, werden die Bilder auf einem sich drehenden Globus angezeigt. Bei der klassischen Ansicht kann man sich außerdem per Mouseover das Bild größer anzeigen lassen. Durch Anklicken des Namens des Nutzers, der das Bild hochgeladen hat, gelangt man schließlich zur Flickr-Seite des Bildes.

Diese Anwendung veranschaulicht zum einen eindrucksvoll, dass ständig unterschiedlichste Bilder auf Flickr hochgeladen werden, zum anderen wird bei der 3D-Ansicht sehr deutlich, dass Flickr weltweit genutzt wird! Eine wirklich tolle Seite, auf der man viel Zeit verbringen kann.

Twistori

This is by far the funnest, cutest little application I’ve seen on the net in a while. Following in the vein of Twittervision and Flickrvision, Twistori follows the twitter feeds of users and flags anything that mentions love, hate, believing or thinking. It’s a very sweet and thoughtful way of aggregating the world’s emotions.

FlickrVisionThere’s something hypnotic about this – a real time stream of photos being posted to Flickr, showing the location of the person uploading on the globe, which rotates and spins. (There’s also TwitterVision for those more inclined).

Now, a Google virtual earth may be some time off, but these are little hints of things to come – mirror worlds, augmented reality: being able to swim through data and content that’s geo-positioned in a virtual world.

PhotoSynth
Photosynth being demo’d by Microsoft is a similar preview of the future and it’s astonishing. In this case, it takes photos from a variety of sources (for example, Flickr) to create a 3D model of a ’scene’. The software extrapolates from a pool of photographs of, say, a cathedral, and is able to determine the 3D paramaters of the cathedral and then overlay the photos on top. I have no way to put it into words, it really is jaw-dropping.

“Using photos of oft-snapped subjects (like Notre Dame) taken from around the Web, Photosynth (based on Seadragon technology) creates breathtaking multidimensional spaces with zoom and navigation features that outstrip all expectation. Its architect, Blaise Aguera y Arcas, shows it off in this standing-ovation demo. Curious about that speck in corner? Dive into a freefall and watch as the speck becomes a gargoyle. With an unpleasant grimace. And an ant-sized chip in its lower left molar.

“Perhaps the most amazing demo I’ve seen this year,” wrote Ethan Zuckerman, after TED2007. Indeed, Photosynth might utterly transform the way we manipulate and experience digital images.

Real World Panoramas
In the meantime, rich content continues, past photos and into 360 degree panoramas, with over 5,000 posted from all over the world on 360 Cities (which, incorrectly I think, bills itself as “The World in Virtual Reality”).

Back Up Your BrainWith all these new applications, thank goodness for EverNote, reviewed in Wired which promises to allow us to back-up our brains.

According to their Web site:

So, scribble a note to yourself, e-mail it to your Evernote system, and all random thoughts and phone numbers on slips of paper will be forever retrievable…including on your mobile device. Forget your grocery list? Forget what the point of a blog entry was? Um….hmm. Better go sign up for beta.

Yesterday I went to the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan for the press screening of the new exhibit that’s opening on February 24th called Design and the Elastic Mind. It started at 10am with refreshments, treats and with the press. I noticed Forbes and a local TV station was there, but I was definitely the only videographer that didn’t have a 30lb camera and a microphone. I have a lot of video coming next week of the exhibition that took place on the sixth floor of the MoMa in New York.

Technology has changed society throughout history as we find new ways to communicate and exchange information. “People isolate themselves in the middle of crowds within individual bubbles of technology—a development Ms. Antonelli calls Existenzmaximum—or
sit alone at computers to tune into communities of like-minded souls or to access information about esoteric topics.” The choice of design was curated for an open source audience. I brought my camera and tried to interview everyone.

I did interview three designers about their work and the exhibition that shows the relationship between design, science and innovation. Design and the Elastic Mind has a name that sort of says what it is; everything is there. They have robots to boot! Here are some examples of what you can expect to see there:

Twittervision and Flickrvision by Dave Troy are part of the exhibition. Dave Troy must be proud. He writes on his blog, “It’s pretty exciting; I never suspected my locking myself in a room and coding would lead to this sort of thing!” I like twitter vision and flickrvision because I entertained for hours there. It makes me feel like I’m in outer space looking down on the world, watching different people’s thoughts and seeing what they are doing at the same moment in time.

History Flow by Fernanda Bertini Viégas, Martin Wattenberg and IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center presents visualizations of the flow of editing that takes place on all Wikipedia entries. Taking advantage of Wikipedia’s free access to the complex layers of every entry’s contributing history, History Flow maps the entire sequence of versions of the same entry, providing a chronicle of a not always harmonious collaborative process. The examples shown in the exhibition refer to the history of a highly controversial entry—abortion—and of a very popular one—chocolate—as of 2003. Each color corresponds to a different contributor. Each vertical line, called a “revision line,” corresponds to the beginning of changed or updated text, while a line’s length indicates the length of the text. The immediate visual reading of this flow can render with relative precision the level of debate and controversy surrounding a topic. A deeper reading using various parameters, such as time, can push the analysis further, into surprising detail.

Babel Blocks, by Constantin Boym and Laurene Leon Boym of Boym Partners Inc., is a collection of wooden figures that represent New York City’s cultural and religious diversity, sending out a message of tolerance and understanding. The first collection is devoted to
New York’s Lower East Side, where the Boyms reside, and each character has a name and a MySpace page.

From their press release: “Web mashups are applications that combine different sources into a single platform, making them one face of collaborative design on the Web. Examples using Google Maps are perhaps the most well known, complete with the familiar red markers—defined as pushpins, upside-down teardrops, or even apostrophes—that people use to tag their maps and share their world, their passions, and their knowledge. In other cases, mashups may be coordinated by public authorities and used to spread practical information about subjects ranging from crime rates to sex offenders’ domiciles. A selection of Google Maps
and other mashups will be seen on monitors in the exhibition.

Over the past several years, with the rise of blogging, social networks, and online dating, there has been proliferation of human self-expression. This has led to the creation of countless online personas. I Want You To Want Me, by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar is an exploration of the search for self and new relationships as expressed in a digital world. Harris and Kamvar search the Internet looking for the most delicate and personal human feelings and behaviors. In this exploration of Web dating, a new project developed for this exhibition, each balloon represents a single person’s dating profile collected from the Internet. Inside each balloon is a video silhouette of one person looking for somebody else. The balloons fly through the sky, and visitors can touch any balloon to open it and see text snippets from that person’s dating profile. Many other commands and degrees of interaction with the interface will allow the viewer to perfect and complete each screen, and each screen is only one of the many possible ways to look at the complexity and delicacy with which people interact online.”

By far the best interview of all the designers was the one I got was “I Want You To Want Me” by Jonathan Harris and Sep Kamvar. It’s a cool art display of people who are looking for dates online. I asked them if the integrated SpeedDate.com as a place to pull information. They said they couldn’t remember where they pulled the information. The only website they could remember is pulling from Craigslist.org. I found this a bit amusing. Overall it’s an intriguing exhibition to tech lovers like me and interesting to the non-technical person. If you can make the MoMa Exhibition I recommend checking this one out.

API: Advanced Programming Interface. Esistono da tempo, e a livelli diversi. Qui, adesso, interessa l’implementazione di alcune API nel cd. web 2.0.

Esempio classico: Google rilascia l’API per interfacciarsi con le google maps, ovvero includere una google map nel proprio sito – uso tipico: al posto della vecchia immagine/mappa “dove siamo”.

I software comunicano tra di loro – e con i programmatori. La combinazione di dati provenienti da applicativi diversi per ottenere un nuovo flusso di dati / un’organizzazione differente dei dati è un’altra delle cose trendy del 2.0, e ha preso il nome di mash-up .

Un’applicazioncina cool del web 2.0 è Twitter. Una specie di interfaccia per brodcastare (uno a molti) messaggi stile sms.
“Cinguettare” con/per gli amici (e per il resto del mondo) in 140 caratteri.
Una cosa forse un po’ frivola, di sicuro con un buon numero di personaggi interessanti che ci stanno sperimentando dentro / attorno.

Ecco allora: twittervision (una google map del mondo con i twitting in real time), twitterholic (che mostra i “drogati” da twitter), tweetvolume (per le parole più usate su twitter).

C’è un buon bando di gente anche italica, su twitter. Non moltissima – un migliaio di presenze. Bloggers e “internet-maniaci”, principalmente. Una roba 1/3 social 1/3 experimental 1/3 waste of time.

Ed ecco che Kromeboy ha disegnato una mappa relazionale dei twitters italiani: sul suo blog la mappa, anche ad alta definizione, e la spiegazione dell’esperimento (ha usato le API di Twitter e un programma di grafica, Graphviz

Stesso argomento, diversa applicazione. David Troy, autore di Twittervision, ha realizzato anche Flickrvision. Stesso concetto, stesso interfacciamento con le maps di google. Solo che qui, ad essere mostrate in tempo reale e con la loro collocazione sul planisfero, sono le fotografie postate dagli utenti su Flickr. Bello, bellissimo – imho.

Per chiudere qualcosa di leggermente diverso. Digg Exposé. Le notizie segnalate -e votate – dagli utenti sul celebre Digg, in esposizione e previsualizzazione tramite Snap Preview (lo stesso che gira anche sui blog di WP, e permette la preview dei link). Qui la generazione del contenuto è dentro un oggetto flash. Da vedere.

Ok, I don’t wanna repeat O`Reilly but Flickrvision is really a cool feature, but why is it mashed up with google and not yahoo`?
