This past year Uravan Minerals has operated an unlicensed uranium exploration site at Sand Lake in the Kivalliq. The Garry Lake site was the first uranium exploration site in that region that was referred for a full impact review. Due to the large number of exploration projects in the Kivalliq (see map Kivalliq Exploration Projects ) the Impact Review Board finally required a full review of exploration projects in the region due to the potential for cumulative impacts on Caribou. Federal Minister’s Decision of Sept 2008 – Uravan garry Lake
However, Uravan refused to do an impact review with a full assessment of Caribou impacts and even suggested they would sue the Impact Review Board rather than prepare an environmental impact statement regarding possible caribou impacts. In May 2009, Uravan wrote to NIRB indicating that Uravan understood the project was not authorized to proceed. Uravan to NIRB, May 2009
Uravan also released a PRESS RELEASE in January 2009 that threatened to sue NIRB and others who participated in the impact review process stating: “Depending on the cost, difficulty, uncertainty and time period for completing the EIS Review on the Garry Lake project proposal, Uravan shall seek compensation, either from government and/or other engaged third parties.”

At around the same time Uravan allegedly began conducting exploration activity in nearby Sand Lake without a license or impact review. They set up a camp with 128 fuel drums and other material “all of this material including the fuel
storage was positioned at this location in anticipation of an exploration program to be conduct[ed] in the 2008 and 2009 field seasons.” ( in this letter to INAC) In August 2009 INAC found the site and ordered it to be cleaned out in by Septemer 30, 2009. The INAC inspection report of august 2009 found leaky fuel drums.

Uravan also refused to clean this mess up, and has recently suggested it will re-apply to NIRB in the hopes of getting a different decision on conducting a full impact review of its operations In this letter to NIRB

Makita feels that Uravan has demonstrated little interest in complying with Nunavut laws, which give the Impact Review board (NIRB) and the Minister of Indian affairs the power to decide when to conduct full impact reviews. these laws also prohibit using water or adding waste to water in a mining exploration camp. Read Makita’s letter to inspector Keim at INAC about the need to take enforcement action against Uravan here (December 22, 2009)

This asturian folk band from Spain seems to have collected quite a local following as this gig is just one of dozens Felpeyu have in their current Australian tour. The members come from varied backgrounds including rock and pop bands although none of those subversive influences seep into their music now. What you get are pipes, box accordions, bouzoukis, mandolins, fiddles, boudrans and percussion as the seven players energetically explore traditional asturian and some Castilian tunes.

If you live in Southwest Florida and fly a lot you are destined to become well acquainted with Harts

If you live in Southwest Florida and fly a lot you are destined to become well acquainted with Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta. Since most of our road games require air travel, and we take around 20 people with us on each trip, we almost always book one-stop flights with stopovers in Atlanta to save money.

In the last few years Hartsfield-Jackson has become the busiest airport in the country surpassing O’Hare Airport in Chicago. However, the fact that so many people arrive and depart from the airport each day is not the biggest problem with flying through there.

You see Atlanta Airport is like fucking Versailles. I am not exaggerating when I say that the airport is like 8 miles long and getting from C Gates to D Gates is approximately a 20-minute walk. I mean for gosh sakes they have a freakin’ train that transports people all over the airport! Therefore, it is imperative when scheduling flights that connect in Atlanta that you have ample time to get from your arrival gate to your next flight.

On a recently trip to play Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia we played a rare afternoon game allowing us to fly home that evening instead of the next morning. After the game we quickly herded the players onto the bus and raced to the Charlotte Airport to board our flight to Atlanta. We were on time for our initial leg however, we knew once we arrived in Atlanta that we’d have to haul-ass to our second flight since we only had a 30-minute layover.

We touched down on time in Atlanta and sprinted to the board to see what gate our next flight would be leaving from only to discover that there was no longer a need to rush since our flight had been delayed 50-minutes from 10:00 pm to 10:50 pm.

Realizing we now had a comfortable hour and 20-minutes before our next flight we decided to make the walk from Gate D-7, where we had deplaned, to Gate C-1 before getting our guys some food.

After about a 20-minute walk we arrived at the beginning of the C Gates and most of our group decided to grab some food. I wasn’t really hungry, and just wanted to get some coffee, so I began walking toward our gate. As I strolled from C-16 to C-1 I chatted with my parents on the phone and grabbed some java from Seattle’s Best before finding an outlet in our gate area where I could charge my laptop.

After getting off the phone with my parents I was curious to see how much longer I had until the flight would be boarding. As I checked my watch I did a quick scan of the area before realizing, quite curiously, that it was 10:00 pm and there was nary a friendly face in sight.

It seemed strange to me that no one else from the team had made their way down to our new gate when we would be boarding in 20-minutes. So, I packed up my computer and starting looking for a departures board to check on our flight.

However, with no board in sight I opted to give another one of our assistant coaches a call and see where everyone was. The following is the conversation that ensued upon him answering my call:

Nick: “Hey Matt where are you?”

Me: “I’m at our Gate C-1. Where are you guys?”

Nick: “We are boarding man at Gate D-1. You gotta get over here right away.”

Me: “Holy shit Nick! I’m not gonna make it!”

Nick: “Well start moving and get here as quickly as you can.”

So, I did the only thing I could at that point and started running. Let me tell you it is not easy to run with a pair of bags on your shoulders but what could I do at that point besides suck is up and sprint.

I skipped my way up a set of escalators before hopping onto the moving walkway where I was able to make up some time. As I dashed down the long corridor I literally felt like I was the Road Runner being shot out of a cannon at the end of the moving sidewalk, which I have to admit was pretty fun.

As I hurried up another escalator I checked my watch to see that 10-minutes had passed and I had no idea whether the plane was still going to be there. At the top of the escalator I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel as I had reached Gate D-16.

Knowing my fate lie at the end of the hall I put my head down and continued running. D-14, 12, 9 the gates rolled by as I now slowed to a jog. Finally, as I passed D-5 I saw a few of our other coaches standing outside D-1 waving me in like a Marathon runner about to cross the finish line.

When I got within shouting distance they started walking toward me yelling that I had missed it and we all needed to run back to C-7 to make another flight. As I slowed to a walk I shouted back, “You guys better be fucking with me cause I’m not running back!”

We then all broke out laughing and boarded the plane to Fort Myers. However, the funniest part of the whole ordeal was that since there was so much confusion on the departure boards around the airport pertaining to when our flight was leaving, and from what gate, that we didn’t end up leaving until 10:50 pm!

After settling into my seat I was able to piece together the events leading up to my almost missing our flight. Apparently the team was eating when someone realized that the board had changed and our flight was in fact going to be leaving at 10:00 pm. In the ensuing frantic rush to get our players to the gate no one took the time to take a head count and therefore didn’t recognize that I wasn’t there.

In the end though there were no hard feelings and I really didn’t care that we left late or that I had to run across the airport to make the flight because of confusion. All that mattered was that I was safely onboard and therefore wouldn’t to have to spend the night in the airport because in the rush to make our connection the team accidentally left a man behind.

It’s worth trying to catch the end of the summer sales this week. Bargains are certainly to be had not least because the exchange rate of lire to pound is still so good. As the Florentines push off out of the city in August, there is no one around to scoop up the last bargains. For designer-wear, scour the chic shops (Prada, Gucci, Armani et al) around Via Tornabuoni and Via della Vigna Nuova. Mark-downs are often much more generous than those in Britain.

As I have stated before, my blog is not a “travelogue” or a “how to do anything” type of blog. What I aspire to accomplish here is a little bit of everything I guess. Life takes me in many directions, some are interesting, some are entertaining and some are inspiring.

There are days when I may get a bit of writers block and on those days I don’t post anything. I mean why rattle on just for the sake of having a new post? Then, there are other days when stuff just pours out of me and I may find myself posting 2 or 3 times in one day! I love it when that happens because obviously something happened that inspired me to write.

This leads me to the word “INSPIRATION”. The reason I bring this up is because we are a society filled with depression and anxiety. Everyone has problems and sometimes those problems can be a bit overwhelming. I recently found myself in a bit of a “funk” after my husband left again for the ship and like clockwork I could predict my sleepless nights and cranky moods creeping to the surface.

Luckily, after one week I was able to snap out of it and get back to what’s good about my life. What inspires me to get out of bed every day varies, but I think we all need more of it! More art, more music, more fun and more love. In the Spirit of Christmas and the beginning of a new year, I am reminded of how much beauty there is out there.

From the sparkling Christmas lights on a neighborhood home to taking a flight and sitting next to a charming 5-year-old girl named “Alana” from Buffalo, NY, who chatted my ear off, got the entire plane to sing “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer” and tugged on my arm to meet her mom at the airport. These are the beautiful moments that make life so special and worth living.

Today’s inspiration is about having no fear and doing what you love. For appreciating how beautiful life can be and for having the guts and young spirit to sing Christmas carols on an airplane. For painting a picture and sharing it with the rest of the world.

Anna Murdin is a very talented artist from the U.K. I encourage you to click on her website and check out her art. I especially love the note cards she makes with her paintings of flowers. She is young and doing what she loves! To me that’s inspiring!

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

All of us – whether we travel for business or pleasure – want to use the travel resources effectivel

All of us – whether we travel for business or pleasure – want to use the travel resources effectively. And by this I mean knowing where to find cheap tickets and when to book a ticket so that you get the best deal, knowing how to use the airlines’ programs to save money and many other little things which can save you money and make you a savvy traveler.

Here are some ideas. Feel free to add your own in a comment. We’ll be happy to read them.

Getting cheap tickets: it’s not enough to know the websites where you can score such deals, but you also need to know when it’s best to purchase the ticket. It’s been proved that if you book two to eight weeks prior to departure, you’ll find the best deals. Of course, if you happen to have a particular destination in mind and there are airlines offering heavy discounts, make sure to book the ticket as soon as possible (such deals are only available for a limited period of time).

Saving more money on airfare: if you happen to fly the same airline all the time, then you probably already know their frequent flyer programs . Make sure to use them for your advantage, whether it means checking your ticket to business class, using the airports’ lounges when the flight is delayed or being able to get free airline tickets once in a while.

How reliable is the airline? Let’s assume that you want to a Delta flight for your next destination. Check the Delta flight status regularly for a week or so and see whether they have any problems with delays (not weather related). And, of course, you can tell your relatives or business partners to check the flight status while you are traveling.

Your luggage: First of all make sure to use luggage that stands out (very colorful, for example; or add a colorful bandana or sticker to the standard luggage) and have your name and contact details clearly written on it. Be at the airport in time (depending on the type of your flight – local, international – you need to be at the airport at least 30 minutes before the flight).

What if my flight was canceled? First of all, call the travel agent (if you booked the ticket via one). Otherwise, call the airline and ask what they are going to do (put you on the next plane out, etc). If things don’t work out, call the travel insurance company (if you have purchased travel insurance prior to your flight).

Keep yourself active during the flight: during long flights walk around often to avoid swelling of your legs.

Keep yourself entertained: an mp3 player (or any other music player), a book and several magazines are your best friends during flights, regardless of how short they are. For long flights, mp3 players which work on batteries are your best bet.

Tears welled up in my eyes. What? The 26th? But that is a week far. And it means I will miss Christm

Tears welled up in my eyes. What? The 26th? But that is a week far. And it means I will miss Christmas, all because of a couple of snowflakes.

Thirty minutes before I was about to fly back home, the spiteful, annoying, mean voice on the loudspeaker announced that all flights to Europe from London’s three main airports were cancelled. Thirty minutes!!

I had checked-in, passed through security check and was impatiently staring up at the screen waiting for the gate number to pop-up next to my flight. And to top it all, the next available seats to Malta were on the 26th!

I had spent a whole afternoon sitting down on the floor, playing with two small girls who had been at the airport since 3:00 in the morning. They were headed to Tenerife with their mum. Their mum was lost. She could speak, but not read English. The look in her eyes screamed of frustration.

Twelve whole hours and her flight had not yet appeared on the screen in the waiting room. She was anxious to get to her destination, but no one around her could help.

Arriving at the airport

Seven hours earlier I had set foot in the airport, and the scene that welcomed me was one of despair. The floor was covered with a carpet of sleeping people.

Every corner of the airport had children wailing, screaming their hearts out, wanting to sleep, go home, or play with other kids. Every bench was taken. Every electrical plug was being used. Every toilet stall was occupied.

The number of people in the airport had accumulated as flights got delayed or cancelled. Long queues at front desks stretched around corners and across halls. The cafes must have made a fortune.

A booming voice was asking people to go back home and re-book their flights. But what about those who had no home in London?

I pinned my eyes to the screen, hoping that my flight does not turn red or green (cancelled or delayed), and as time went by I was sure that I was getting back home. Relatives and friends wished me a good journey via text messages. I had already planned the weekend. I knew what to do and who to visit.

That is, until the clock struck 15:30.

Flight cancelled

To add insult to injury, we were asked to queue for more than three hours, simply to be given a phone number scribbled on a piece of paper.

‘Call this number tomorrow, and explain what happened. Sorry, we cannot do anything, no refunds, no re-bookings. Do it on-line.’

Back home my mum was frantically calling airlines and browsing online looking for an alternative flight. People around me on their way to Malta were firing flight prices to each other, discussing the best alternative.

Prices for flights taking-off the next day from the only airport which was not closed-down were rising quickly.

An old British lady infront of me suddenly hugged me, excitedly telling me she had got a flight to the islands for 170 pounds. Five minutes later I got a call from home. I was flying the next day for 270 pounds.

In 5 minutes the price had gone up by 100 pounds, but sweet relief swept through me. A flight cancellation had cost me 300 pounds more, but I did not have to wait till Boxing day to get back home after all
