As you can imagine, I shoot a lot of video. Usually, I find myself behind Panasonic equipment and have grown to like their P2 system and the incredible color they provide. But, let’s face it, none of the Panasonic P2 cameras tuck nicely into your back pocket. Earlier this year, I was watching something on Tim Street’s Blog and asked him what he was shooting on. Turns out he was using one of the Flip standard definition cameras at that time. Quick perusal of their website and I picked up a FlipMino HD. I’ve now shot some 20-30 interviews on the camera and plenty of other footage. What I have found is that I have some strong likes and dislikes about the camera. Here they are:

What I like:

• This thing is darn small! Truly it’s smaller than my mobile phone (a blackberry), so it tucks away nicely, even into tight pair of jeans.
• Especially in bright daylight, the clarity of the images is pretty spectacular. In the demo below, please note the incredible blue sky and silhouetted mountains behind the subject about half way through.
• The flip-out port/USB charger – on the ultra models you have to buy batteries, but on the Mino, the charge comes directly from the computer. (Please note that I once uploaded video from a hub, which didn’t provide power back to the camera and spent a day wondering what the heck happened to my new camera, which the hub had drained of power!)… This is a personal preference thing, but I like the fact that if I plug it in each night when I’m shooting, the camera is ready to go when I wake up in the morning.
• The software needed to make a quick video is located on the camera, meaning that if you have access to a computer and the internet, you can make a quick video edit and post it to the world from virtually any cafe in the world (save parts of China and Cuba, where they would be screened).
• Surprisingly, the camera is pretty good in lower light situations. In side-by-side comparisons with the Insignia, the footage from the flip was much better.
• This may seem funny, but I really like the handy little pouch the Flip comes in. Not only is a storage bag, but it doubles to keep the lens clean; excellent for yielding high quality images.

What I don’t like (or just bugs me silly):

• A red/orange light comes on the front of the camera when you are shooting. My finding is that this can unhinge a subject. We were shooting a public meeting one time and as soon we hit record, the public officials stopped talking. LAME!
• The codec – What I have been told is the way Flip fits so much video data into its camera is by shooting to square pixels. Whether or not that is true, I don’t know. What I do know is that the Flip video has difficulty when being edited outside of the Flip video software. I captured some excellent interviews earlier this year and wanted to marry them up with a cool intro for Rocket’s Tail. The Flip Video just wasn’t compatible. Additionally, I have tried to upload the movies to Youtube without going through the export process or it’s native (upload to Youtube) option only to have Youtube’s file conversion fail. So, while I like fitting so much footage into the camera, I want video that is more compatible with other systems (PLEASE NOTE: I also shoot on an Insignia, which comes at a similar price, and I find similar issues with it’s footage).
• The editing software – On the one hand, I very much like that there is editing software in the camera. On the other hand, some aspects of the software are limiting: 1). Low word count and/or control of the title screen and credit screen, 2). software only allows 4 pieces of footage to be edited together, 3). it doesn’t natively allow you to incorporate non-flip video in the edit (I know I keep coming back to melding video from different sources… but, it’s important to me!)
• The microphone is located on the operator’s side of the camera… this is completely weird. I have heard that newer versions of the camera have fixed this… but for now, when you watch a Rocket’s Tail interview that was done on the Flip… my questions will be louder than the subject’s answers.

The Demo:

I had the fun happen stance of unknowingly introducing Liora Mendeloff (InstantMediaKit.com) to Matthew Gill (Burn the Boats Produtions), one of her clients. After raving about his experience with InstantMediaKit, Liora did what any good marketer would do; she asked for a testimonial. She pulled out her Flip Ultra and I immediately pulled out my FlipMino HD. What I tried to do was capture various lighting and sound situations available in the moment. There are some close-up and perspective shots. At times the subject is in silhouette. You be the judge.

Summary

The FlipMino HD has some great applications, but it’s not great for every application. If you’re doing Gotcha! journalism, the record alert light is not going to help. However, it’s great for those on-the-fly interviews or footage that will be instantly posted through the system, the images are great. If Flip comes out with a camera that delivers footage fully compatible with alternate editing systems, I want to check it out!  For versatility, ease-of-use (and pocket), the Flip takes the cake!

Well it sure didn’t take long for another expected flip flop to occur on this White House Administration’s watch. This time it is on the issue of mammograms age guidelines as per the United States Preventive Services Task Force a tentacle of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Oh the irony!

I wonder when the illustrious 21 member panel of the U.S Preventive Services Task Force met in it’s entirety (1), what were the winning results of research to hatchet, the long standing recommendations, that have not completed 3 generations of observations to validate such rapid change, and when is the next scheduled meeting of the panel (2)?

Now really, who made this call?

Research and Quality (the Council). The Council is to advise the
Secretary of HHS (Secretary) and the Director of the Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) on matters related to activities
of the Agency to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and
effectiveness of health care for all Americans.
Seven current members’ terms will expire in November 2009. To fill
these positions in accordance with the legislative mandate establishing
the Council, we are seeking individuals who are distinguished: (1) In
the conduct of research, demonstration projects, and evaluations with
respect to health care; (2) in the fields of health care quality
research or health care improvement; (3) in the practice of medicine;
(4) in other health professions; (5) in representing the private health
care sector (including health plans, providers, and purchasers) or
administrators of health care delivery systems; (6) in the fields of
health care economics, information systems, law, ethics, business, or
public policy; and (7) in representing the interests of patients and
consumers of health care. Individuals are particularly sought with
experience and success in activities specified in the summary above.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Section 931 of the PHS Act, 42 U.S.C. 299c,
provides that the Secretary shall appoint to the National Advisory
Council for Healthcare Research and Quality twenty-one appropriately
qualified individuals. At least seventeen members shall be
representatives of the public and at least one member shall be a
specialist in the rural aspects of one or more of the professions or
fields listed in the above summary. In addition, the Secretary
designates, as ex officio members, representatives from other Federal
agencies specified in the authorizing legislation, principally agencies
that conduct or support health care research, as well as Federal
officials the Secretary may consider appropriate. The Council meets in
the Washington, DC metropolitan area, generally in Rockville, Maryland,
approximately three times a year to provide broad guidance to the
Secretary and AHRQ’s Director on the direction of and programs
undertaken by AHRQ.
Seven individuals will be selected presently by the Secretary to
serve on the Council beginning with the meeting in the spring of 2010.
Members generally serve 3-year terms. Appointments are staggered to
permit an orderly rotation of membership.
Interested persons may nominate one or more qualified persons for
membership on the Council. Self-nominations are accepted. Nominations
shall include: (1) A copy of the nominee’s r[eacute]sum[eacute] or
curriculum vitae; and (2) a statement that the nominee is willing to
serve as a member of the Council. Selected candidates will be asked to
provide detailed information concerning their financial interests,
consultant positions and research grants and contracts, to permit
evaluation of possible sources of conflict of interest.
The Department seeks a broad geographic representation. In
addition, AHRQ conducts and supports research concerning priority
populations, which include: Low-income groups; minority groups; women;
children; the elderly; and individuals with special health care needs,
including individuals with disabilities and individuals who need
chronic care or end-of-life health care. See 42 U.S.C. 299(c).
Nominations of candidates with expertise in health care for these
priority populations are encouraged.

When Apple announced video capability in the iPod Nano and a video camcorder in the iPhone 3Gs, Cisco saw a dramatic increase in YouTube video uploads. And as such, they saw the handwriting on the wall. Sure, The Flip has the edge with HD, but to have an all in one solution with the iPhone has forced Cisco, the new owners of Flip Video, to get working on a response. And to that end, they’ve announced that the next model of the phenominally successful Flip Video Pocket Camcorders will come with built in WiFi. But that’s not all.

In addition to being able to transfer video wirelessly, new Flip models will also have double the onboard memory (although they should just bite the bullet and put in an SD card already) a larger screen which will slide up to reveal control buttons, and have the capability to not only upload to YouTube, but also direct Facebook uploads via the wireless connection.

The first model to get the WiFi overhaul will probably be the MinoHD line and rumor has it we’ll see an actual mockup of it at CES this January.

You know, I rather like a feature war between Cisco and Apple brewing. It only means that the consumer will be the ultimate winners. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a new iPhone with HD capability …

UPDATED: The next iteration of Flip (s CSCO) video cameras will reportedly be WiFi-enabled, allowing users to wirelessly upload their videos. Pocket Lint first broke the news, and CrunchGear claims to have confirmed it. This next-gen Flip will also reportedly have a slide-out screen that reveals the record and menu buttons underneath — the screen will not, however, be a touchscreen. Update: We had a chance to speak with a few Cisco/Flip reps this morning who said they had not confirmed this news and would not comment on any upcoming products.

The addition of Wi-Fi will would be a nice touch for the video camera, and an appropriate marriage with parent company Cisco’s (s csco) networking tech. (Perhaps the Wi-Fi will even tie into the mysterious forthcoming Flip set-top box.) But the bigger question plaguing the entire Flip line is just how much life is left in a standalone product. Decent video-recording capabilities are being embedded in phones like the Droid, iPhone and iPod Nano. As we learned earlier this year, the video quality of the Nano doesn’t quite match up to the Flip cam yet, but that’s a big yet. Will people want to carry around a dedicated video camera when their phone will do just fine for capturing spontaneous moments?

When we’ve spoken with Flip reps in the past they’ve put on a brave face and said that there is enough room for lots of players in the space, but it’s hard to believe that. With multipurpose devices getting better at shooting video and the high-end HD cameras dropping in price, the better-than-good-but-not-great Flips are getting squeezed out.

Jeff Jarvis hat so charmant den Flip-Camcorder vorgestellt, dass ich mich genötigt sah, bei amazon eine Bestellung aufzugeben. Schön in schwarz und einem 8 GB Flash Memory. Heute kam das Teil in einer Verpackung, die doch sehr an das Kauferlebnis eines iPhones erinnert. Batterie eingesetzt und man kann sofort losleben.

Hier der erste Miniversuch.

Erstes Urteil. Das Gerät ist so klein und in der Ton- und Bildqualität unheimlich gut. Über den eingebauten USB-Arm kann man den Film ratzfatz auf Youtube hochladen. Bei anderen Geräten ist das teilweise schwieriger.
Allerdings empfehle ich den Kauf eines USB-Adapters, dann braucht man den Flip nicht so eng an den Laptop legen.

Ich habe mich für das folgende Modell entschieden.

“A Review for Mac users “
The camera

The camera has a 1.5 inch screen that is vibrant but small. The camera is thin and can easily be slid into the front pocket of your jeans. It is extremely light. The buttons on the back are touch sensitive and are not typical buttons that you “press”. There is a nice quality built in microphone. Operation is dead simple. Turn it on and push the large red button to start record and then press it again to stop.

The video quality:

The video quality from this camera is phenomenal considering its price tag. No its not a Canon HV30 but its not supposed to be.There is very little motion blur and the colors are nicely saturated. Due to the higher quality video shakiness is more pronounced in the videos but its not terrible. The more still you can hold this camera the better. The sound is crisp and clear. I can easily say the quality of this camera trumps all other flash based camcorders in this price bracket.

The Software

Mac users rejoice! The Mino HD’s video files ( MPEG4) are natively supported by Mac OS X, Quicktime, & iMovie 8 or iMovie HD. The software (Flipshare) even allows stitching the footage together, adding music and transitions and exporting the finished result directly to Youtube or just onto your desktop. I am very impressed Pure Digital rewrote the software package so that the features for Mac Users were the same as PC users. When you first plug in the camera iPhoto will open and offer to import the video’s. You can override this in iPhoto’s preferences. From then on the Flipshare will open automatically.

Final Conclusion:

The Flip Mino HD billed as the worlds smallest HD camcorder (as of 11/14) is worth its weight in gold. Especially if you have a Mac! If I had to choose one con for this camera I would say that I wish they would’ve added an external microphone jack to it-but thats really reaching. It’s a wonderful camera for the money and they say the best camera for the job is the one thats with you when you really need it.

The camera was so easy to use that I think it took me less than 3 minutes to have it up and running and taking video.

For what it is, it gets 5 stars, however, I do want to say that after a full day of exploring the camera there are a few things to consider…

First, the viewing screen is very small, as you’ll see in the video review below. This isn’t a big deal, and again for the type of product, you go in knowing there will be limitations of some sort. In terms of taking video, that’s about the only limitation I’ve found so far because the camera is just that easy to use. From one touch recording to fast playback and delete functions, you really can’t get much simpler.

After you’ve taken the video, getting it onto your computer is also a snap. Flip out the USB plug and shove it into your computer’s USB port. Make sure it’s a 2.0 port. The software automatically starts and runs and it allows you to save the original video file to your computer in mp4 format, save it in wmv movie format (with rudimentary title/credit slides and optional music track), and a few other basic functions like image stills. There isn’t a lot of fluff, and you really don’t need fluff for this.

If you want to use the native file format you’re going to need a video program like Pinnacle or Ulead that can read mp4, or a conversion program (you can use the one that’s included to convert to wmv if you want). Windows Movie Maker will not read native mp4, so to use that tool you’ll want to convert first.

The camera records in 1280×720 at 30fps. This isn’t 1080i/p but you’re really not going to notice that much of a difference – though I do wish it recorded at 60fps just for a cleaner and smoother video (just a personal preference – not a downside to the camera).

For the price, the size, the ease of use, and the ease of getting video off the camera, this is a crazy cool gadget that I’ll be using very frequently for some great video!

The Flip Mino HD billed as the worlds smallest HD camcorder (as of 11/14) is worth its weight in gold. Especially if you have a Mac! If I had to choose one con for this camera I would say that I wish they would’ve added an external microphone jack to it-but thats really reaching. It’s a wonderful camera for the money and they say the best camera for the job is the one thats with you when you really need it.

The camera was so easy to use that I think it took me less than 3 minutes to have it up and running and taking video.

For what it is, it gets 5 stars, however, I do want to say that after a full day of exploring the camera there are a few things to consider…

First, the viewing screen is very small, as you’ll see in the video review below. This isn’t a big deal, and again for the type of product, you go in knowing there will be limitations of some sort. In terms of taking video, that’s about the only limitation I’ve found so far because the camera is just that easy to use. From one touch recording to fast playback and delete functions, you really can’t get much simpler.

After you’ve taken the video, getting it onto your computer is also a snap. Flip out the USB plug and shove it into your computer’s USB port. Make sure it’s a 2.0 port. The software automatically starts and runs and it allows you to save the original video file to your computer in mp4 format, save it in wmv movie format (with rudimentary title/credit slides and optional music track), and a few other basic functions like image stills. There isn’t a lot of fluff, and you really don’t need fluff for this.

If you want to use the native file format you’re going to need a video program like Pinnacle or Ulead that can read mp4, or a conversion program (you can use the one that’s included to convert to wmv if you want). Windows Movie Maker will not read native mp4, so to use that tool you’ll want to convert first.

The camera records in 1280×720 at 30fps. This isn’t 1080i/p but you’re really not going to notice that much of a difference – though I do wish it recorded at 60fps just for a cleaner and smoother video (just a personal preference – not a downside to the camera).

For the price, the size, the ease of use, and the ease of getting video off the camera, this is a crazy cool gadget that I’ll be using very frequently for some great video!

Typically I don’t pay much attention to TV commercials, however the ads that “The Flip” have been producing have started to catch my eye.  The Flip video camcorder records HD quality that fits in your pocket. The way they advertise has been both creative and engaging. 

Before I started seeing their TV ads, I kept hearing about this cool little device. The word of mouth for the Flip had me wondering what it was, but because I don’t (or maybe didn’t?) have a need for such a device I didn’t bother looking into it. 

Then one day I sat down to watch some TV and I saw an ad for the Flip. The ads start out with a video that is obviously homemade, catchy, funny, and generally entertaining. After the short video, the Flip pops up with a “Do you Flip?” banner. The ads brings back memories of you and your buddies capturing that “funny moment” that you play over and over again and it never gets old. They really pull you in.

The Flip doesn’t seem to be catering to those that NEED a camcorder, rather it markets to those of us that say, “Man, I wish I had that on film!” This micro HD camcorder provides just that.

Wow! I haven’t blogged in a while, sorry! Today at the lunch table one of my friends, (not sing real names) Joy (that one day just decided that she wanted to sit with us [and I have not problem with that]) said that she was going to have Ally (fake name) sit with us. Now I tried to be with this girl and I talked to her on AIM and stuff but when she asked what I was doing and I said talking to Gabby she said “STOP TALKING TO GABBY WHEN YOU ARE TALKING TO ME!” so I tired to be her friend and so did most of my friends. So, as you can see, we didn’t want her at the table because she is mean. Joy got mad and this huge yelling thing happened. Meanwhile, I am sitting there being quiet and thinking “Oh my gosh” while Steph tried to break them up. I joined Steph and yelled at them to stop. We still haven’t settled it yet. AHHH! Stupid thing to fight over drama!

Hi Nova, hope your good. You’ve just dropped your new mixtape which is all over Jay-Z beats. What was the inspiration for doing this?
Basically I did a freestyle type track over Jay-Z’s public service announcement a while back where I flipped his lyrics to include my name like ‘allow me to re-introduce myself my name is Nov’s, N to the O V…’ and my boy Snail suggested I do a whole mixtape cos there’s so many tracks I can flip like that. At first I weren’t really on the idea but then I decided to go with it a couple years later.
