A down economy is not a good reason for cutting down on marketing. The Great Depression along with other historical downturns offer classic examples of the power of brand advertising. In fact, there are many brands whose advertising strategies during times of economic crisis were key to their survival. Just look at GE, Disney, HP and Microsoft – all recession start ups. The moral of the story is: Do not be discouraged – get out there, disseminate information about your business! Get an informational piece together. Make it the best – mail it, give it away, strategically place it & make sure it’s also available on the internet.

Every legitimate business should have some sort of print material to hand out or mail to their clients and prospects. Preferably that print material is professionally designed & reviewed by a copywriter.

A bad marketing piece is worse than no marketing piece at all. If you have a brochure that was designed in Microsoft word or Publisher, now is the time to let go of it. Hire a professional to take care of your marketing. Yes you are going to pay for that service, but it will be worth it. Major companies don’t spend billions of dollars on marketing every year for nothing. Marketing & Graphic Design has proven to increase sales & deliver a certain perception of your business. Make sure that perception or “image” is exactly the kind you want to convey.

I’m gonna learn to fly – high!

Last week’s Canadian premiere of FAME the movie was hands down the best launch event I have seen in years.  Seriously, whoever planned this party (Kaleidoscope Inc.) gets a giant high five, with like those giant hands you see pointing #1 at baseball games.  Let me tell you why.

1) Venue:  The Randolph Academy is one of the best, most applauded dance/theatre/music academies in Toronto.  Not only does it fit the theme creatively, giving you that feeling you get when you’d hit school at night for a high school dance, the actual layout was perfect, allowing for the variety of themed rooms so meticulously (and brilliantly) organized by the party planners.

2) Deco:  Decorations were frickin’ sweet.  Sure, they didn’t have to do much about creating a school atmosphere, but they did a great job of adding the New York City flair to the event with street signs, and more.  They also arranged the furniture that we assumed was already there into very convincing student lounge areas…I felt like I’d run into my high school teacher walking around the place – well, almost…I have to admit, there weren’t this many beautiful people in high school.  Speaking of beautiful people…

3) The Crowd:  The crowd was poppin’ off, straight up.  From comedian Trevor Boris, to the kids of Degrassi, to So You Think You Can Dance, Canada finalists, and of course the Fame movie entourage, this party was packed with recognizables.  On top of it, everyone was super friendly, with more “hey let’s party” than “I’m sorry, do I know you?”  You know you’re in Canada when.

4) F&B:  All I have to say is open bar and food for days.  Nuff said.  (Actually, I will say I was happy they had sugar free red bull.  I know that’s a lame comment, but there you have it.  I wonder if it’s cuz it was part of the dance school theme? *NOTE: we found no signs of bulimia in the bathroom, other than the throat pokers and complimentary breath mints – joking!)

4) Music and DJ:  Great music, great DJ, who really read the crowd well.  They converted one of the main rooms in to a club, which might have been the only part inconsistent with high school.  Our dances were never this good (sorry Much Music Video Dance Party people…you have nothing on the Fame party organizers.)  Not that I’m complaining.  People were dancing like a m___ f____ riot.

5) Fun Factor:  What really put the party over the top was…how the planners truly went over the top.  I am ruined for photobooths from this point forward.  Instead of the usual amazing photobooth, these guys brought in specialists to provide flipbook photos!  That’s right.  You hit the ‘booth’ (in reality a filmed screen) and take seven seconds of any sort of footage you want…they then freeze frame each sub second of it, and put it together into a flipbook for you and your pals.  Absolutely brilliant.  More than brilliant.  I went back three times, the photo slut in me couldn’t help it.

Next?  Rock Band central.  I don’t know what made me more excited…the fact that they had the new Beatles Rock Band expansion pack set up with full get up plus an extra mic and extra guitar, OR the fact that they hired techs to film and record every embarassing moment for you to bring home on your very own dvd.  Oh ok, the latter, ur right.  You’re soooo right.  Despite our group failing thrice before we ran to our autograph session for the fans, we had a kickass time with “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”.

Hands down, this was an amazing launch, with amazing people.  Kudos to Kaleidoscope Inc., the extraordinary party planners, and congratulations to everyone involved in the Fame movie.

Now everyone, run out and go see the film.  You too can light up the sky like a flame – FAME!

Ahí va una nueva idea :  estoy intentando hacer un flipbook como regalo para un cumpleaños…En castellano, el flipbook ( nombre super simpático) se se denomina folioscopio (nombre feo):  significa pasar rapidamente los folios de estos mini-libritos en los que está consignada una imagen fragmentada a la que el “pase de folios”, dota de movimiento. Los más mayores, lo hemos hecho en el cole…  Ahora , a partir de nuestros vídeos, se puede imprimir y encuadernar un flipbook ( en plan casero) o, bien, que nos lo hagan .

He descubierto que en Softonic hay un sotfware libre que te permite seleccionar los fotogramas de un vídeo que te interesan para, después, crear un formato de impresión que nos permita el flip ( o sea, el pase de folios…). http://flipbook-printer.softonic.com/.

Lo intentaré y a ver qué tal. Esto es para el formato casero, para uno más profesional , hay una web inglesa Bob Books que realiza flipboocks ( aunque lo llaman flickbooks) por 18,5€ ( incluye el envío to Spain). http://www.bobbooks.co.uk/flickbooks/examples.html

Los FlipBooks pueden recoger alguna situación divertida del cumpleañero que tengamos en vídeo, o a todos sus colegas deseándole feliz cumpleaños… Incluso, si hay ganas y presupuesto, se puede regalar uno a cada invitado como recuerdo de la “fiesta”. También tiene su uso en el mundo profesional de la publicidad y el marketing. El que veís que ilustra el post, es la figura de un hombre caminando de un numero de una calle a otro. Esta fue la forma en el que un estudio gráfico , informó a sus clientes del cambio de dirección . El hecho de que podamos utilizar no toda la página con la imagen, lo convierte , también, en una libreta … Ahí, podemos hacer dedicatorias , por ejemplo…

World of Warcraft: The Burning Addiction
Research Project – ECUAD Creative Process 2007

For this project, I wanted to focus on what extent people would spend time from their real lives on their virtual ones. I then went to the Alcoholics Anonymous website and took their manifesto of questions that they ask potential addicts (ie: Have you ever missed school or work due to alcohol?) and then remixed the questions to ask my fellow Warcraft players (ie: Have you ever missed school or work due to Warcraft?) and was amazed at how honest their responses were.

World of Warcraft: Haikus
Video Editing and Production – ECUAD Video Art 2009

This Video Art project required us to use found footage and splice it together within the theme of a haiku and I chose to focus again on World of Warcraft. Several different scenes from official game play trailers were used along with my own poem sequences in order to create its own unique storyline set to a haunting yet beautiful soundtrack.

I also received some additional publicity from a major World of Warcraft fan blog and as a result, have now had over 6,000 views on YouTube:

Medal of Honor: European Assault

With creative control to choose our own subject matter, I decided to create this poster for the soon to be released add-on of the popular Medal of Honor video game using World War II imagery and incorporating pertinent graphics and typeface layouts, with the centerpiece being this iconic image of the D-Day landing.

Emily Carr Foundation Exhibition

In my Digital Basics course, our instructor challenged us to create our own poster design that would be submitted for that year’s Foundation Exhibition. The design that I chose focused on a clean and precise grid layout, with the typeface echoing this overall theme as well.

Read Between the Lies

With an overall political theme required for this project for my Visual Communications course, I decided to focus on the ongoing tragedy occurring in Iraq. I wanted my critique to be bold and biting, yet symbolic at the same time by using George W. Bush’s own words being contradicted by documented facts on the ground within the layout of the American flag.

The Starlight Express

One of the first poster design projects that I worked on in the Design Essentials program at ECUAD and BCIT, I wanted the overall theme to reflect a bygone age in which the Royal Hudson train serviced passengers from Vancouver to Squamish. This was all tied in with the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics along with using Futura as the typeface.

International Campaign to Ban Landmines
Layout Design – ECUAD Design Essentials 2005

This layout design was created to reflect on the tragedy that landmines cause in third world countries by mirroring two family units. Where the Nuclear Family is shown with the requisite two parents and two children, the Landmine Family is shown with obvious limbs missing and the daughter being replaced by a tombstone due to a landmine explosion.

Utilizing still images from the films playing in that year’s festival, a double-sided handbook spread was made highlighting film screenings and appearances in a clean and elegant design.

Phoenix Rising v1.0
3D Design – ECUAD Design One 2007

These sculptures were created for my Design One class as the project called for us to construct new and unique 3D sculptures by combining a singular object in a repetitive fashion so that the original object would get lost in the sum of the whole of the new piece. Version 1.0 is a freestanding structure and able to balance on the tips of plastic spoons.

Version 2.0 was created as an alternative and two interpretations that I have with this sculpture are that of a Phoenix Rising out of flames (hence the title of the pieces) or of a frame-by-frame rotation of a high board diver tucking in as he falls to the water below.

Flipbook – ECUAD Digital and Interactive Arts 2008

Wanting to play on my audience’s moral standards, this flipbook showcased a woman performing an otherwise overtly sexualized activity, yet because I enlarged and hyper pixilated the original video footage, the viewer is not able to immediately ascertain what they are viewing. On initial viewing, they may in fact realize what they are seeing, but due to their personal embarrassment, may not give in to such puerile thoughts.

On a very windy and cold January afternoon, my girlfriend and I drove up to Whistler from Vancouver and stopped briefly at the Provincial Park in Porteau Cove where I wanted to capture the incredible whitecap waves and this beautiful island in the distance. I took my original shot into Photoshop and digitally manipulated it in order to create this much richer and vibrant image.

For this typography exploration, I decided on taking words at their literal meaning and creating abstract illustrations out of the words themselves. Compression being a thematically delicious word to utilize in such a fashion, the word is repeated and imploded without end into itself.

One of my first major digital illustrations, this image has always been a favorite of mine and its title harkens back to the process of origination by using the Posterize tool in Photoshop to create the initial blueprint and then cleaning it all up within Illustrator.

I made this video at home in Clare in the free time I had before heading over to Japan. It’s pretty simple but I think it works just fine. I took the music from the AFX album ‘Chosen Lords’. The song is called ‘Crying in Yur Face’.

A Flipbook is one of the many names for a Digital publication and it is another way to describe the interactive page-turning effect associated with popular digital magazines you see online. Additionally, a Flipbook allows publishers to incorporate features directly onto their publication such as print capability, PDF download, digital sharing, ad serving, and viewer tracking and reporting. These features provide a Flipbook with increased value in terms of reader experience and interaction.

bruce: the elapsed time on the video is 2 minutes. How long did filming that take? What’s the “music?”

jeff: it wasn’t actually filmed…it’s 100+ stills – downloaded to computer into 1 album – each still is like a “key” animation cell…so, at that point i can go thru it, back and forth at will like a fancy flipbook.
then, i recorded beating sounds on a cassette…then played that on different cassette player and recorded it on another cassette with more beating sounds…then played that and recorded it again with moans…then another layer of moans…then me play uke…then me playing uke…anywho…8 or so layers.
then, after i practice flipping thru images with final recording playing…
i set up video camera, turn on the sound recording, and shoot video of me flipping thru the images to the sound.
then, download that video sound recording…then do some (not a lot, most is done during process to this point) editing.
then figure/add what titles/credits make sense info and lookswise.
Back to your question…it took 1-2 hours to shoot the stills, 2-3 minutes of video…and a lot more time in and around.
Anywho, I think tech is a really important part of whatever, but my dumb-no tech mind has to hobble limpy tortoise style to wedge into the hightech world.

Have you seen this movie yet? It’s been making the rounds on all of the best design blogs for it’s witty execution and thoughtful nod to vintage design. I knew you wouldn’t want to miss out…

[Background: You see, the couple who made this film have a mother who collects flip books and so they decided to be cute and turn a little movie into a custom flip book for her as a Christmas gift. (You can do it too if you go here.) One particular member of this couple hopes this is not as embarrassing as she thinks it probably is.]

Before movies were invented there were a number of optical devices that produced animation effects. With weird and unpronounceable names such as thaumatrope, phenakistoscope, zoetrope, and praxinoscope, these devices let you view a spinning card with small images on it, each like a single frame in an animated movie. As the series of images spins by, it appears that the image moves because persistence of vision blends the individual images into a continuous stream as it does in the movies. It is possible to buy or make these early devices, and their odd but very unique names make it easy to search for information about them on the Internet. For example, search for “phenakistoscope” and every site the search engine finds will have something to do with the device.

Another device that has long been used to show animation is the flipbook, and early low-tech version of animated GIF files. You might be familiar with these books that you hold in one hand and flip through the pages with the other. A series of drawings turns into an animation when the pages are flipped smoothly at the right speed.

You can make your own flipbook using any printer and a series of digital images. There is no reason why you couldn’t print the series of images in the upper or lower right corners of a multipage report, so people could flip the pages to see the animation. It might be one way to get people’s attention. In most cases however, you’d want to do a stand-alone flipbook. Here’s how to begin:

1. Capture a series of images using your camera’s continuous mode. You can also shoot movies if you have the software to extract and save individual frames.

2. Design your flipbook so you can easily place and print a number of images so they are aligned and the same size. It may help in assembly if the pages are numbered. The flipbook can be any size, but smaller ones are easier to flip through. The size of a business card or slightly larger works well. In fact, you might want to purchase and design for widely available business card stock. Be sure to leave space for the binding on one edge of the layout. The side you leave it on depends on whether you are left or right handed.

3. Lay out the flipbook pages using a program designed for the purpose, or with a word processing, desktop publishing program, or photo-editing program. Many programs have templates for Avery and other products that do basic layout for you. Just be sure you can use a different picture for each card. Many business card programs assume you’ll want to use the same image on all cards. Up to a point the more pages you have, the smoother and longer the animation will be.

4. Print the flipbook on the heaviest white paper your printer will accept (60 lb is recommended) and then cut out the individual frames. If your printer won’t handle thick enough paper, you can print the images and then glue them onto stiff paper.

5. Arrange the pictures in order and bind the flipbook using staples, rubber bands, or glue. Some people prefer to flip with the first image on the bottom of the stack, and the last on top. You might want to experiment.

6. Holding the end of the stack that has the binding margin, fan through the pages and watch the image move.
