2009 was the year that Lily Allen returned to music after a couple of years of basically just being gobby in the papers, it was the year that saw Jay-Z make a spectacular comeback with some killer collaborations, and the year that Sugababes basically imploded. And so continues our list of the 50 best singles of the year.

20. Sugababes – ‘About A Girl’
November, Peak #8
“RedOne. Sugababes” announced new member Jade Ewen, and Sugababes Version 4 was officially off to a great start. ‘About A Girl’, like ‘Get Sexy’, sounded a far cry from the likes of ‘Push The Button’ and ‘About You Now’, but with its thumping production and its 90s europop middle-8 it was an absolute tune nonetheless.

19. Pixie Lott – ‘Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)’
June, Peak #1
Perhaps one of the most surprising chart-toppers of the year, ‘Mama Do’ signalled the arrival of Essex girl Pixie Lott, with its catchy pop hook and lyrics relatable to teenage girls the nation over. Not the most dazzling number one single of the year by any means, but certainly a pleasant surprise.

18. Lady Gaga – ‘Bad Romance’
November, Peak #1
Loathed by some, loved by many; Lady Gaga has been the most notorious newcomer of 2009. ‘Bad Romance’ signalled in the deluxe edition of her squillion-selling debut album, with what looks like one of the most expensive videos of the year to accompany it and a typically outrageous performance on ‘The X Factor’.

17. Miley Cyrus – ‘Party In The USA’
October, Peak #11
Let the snobs roll their eyes – Miley hit the bullseye with ‘Party In The USA’, a smooth contemporary pop anthem penned by Dr Luke (Avril’s ‘Girlfriend’, Katy’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’, Britney’s ‘Circus’) that thanks to criminally low promotion just failed to crack the UK Top 10.  It gives shout-outs to Britney and Jay-Z, for crying out loud!

16. The Saturdays – ‘Work’
June, Peak #22
Live performances have sort of exposed The Saturdays as slightly under-par vocally, but on record you can’t deny a few of their tunes are pretty impressive. ‘Work’ remains their best effort to date, despite its relatively poor chart performance, thanks to its buckets of attitude and killer chorus.

15. 30 Seconds To Mars – ‘Kings and Queens’
December, Peak #28
Apparently Fearne Cotton’s favourite track of the year, ‘Kings and Queens’ is only the third UK single for 30 Seconds To Mars, the calling card for new album ‘This Is War’ and a recent regular on the Radio 1 A-List. ‘Kings and Queens’ is anthemic in a way that deserves full-on hands in the air, top of the voice attention, and hopefully there won’t be another billion-year wait before they achieve it again.

14. Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys – ‘Empire State of Mind’
October, Peak #2
Perhaps the best “love song about a location” of 2009, ‘Empire State of Mind’ was so appealing it charged to the top end of the charts ages before its official release as a single. Thanks to some killer vocal work from Alicia Keys and a great arrangement from Mr Z, this deserved its superb commercial performance and is one of the best singles from the careers of either artist.

13. Alexandra Burke feat. Flo Rida – ‘Bad Boys’
October, Peak #1
From its siren-heavy, Flo Rida-induced introduction it’s clear that Burke will be no Leona. “Alexandra girl” effortlessly makes ‘Bad Boys’ an irresistible pop/R’n’B gem and Flo Rida’s rap, including the declaration that with even the alphabet Alexandra “only sings the crooked letters”, is one of 2009’s most surprising guest appearances. What on Earth is in store for Joe McElderry?!

12. Lily Allen – ‘The Fear’
February, Peak #2
Lily made a spectacular return to pop in 2009 with one of the year’s best albums and this surprisingly successful single. With its dark sound and cynical lyrics, ‘The Fear’ charged to the top of the charts in February and remained there for quite some time, proof that behind the gobby tabloid favourite is a bloody good popstar.

11. Pixie Lott – ‘Cry Me Out’
December, Peak #12
We’ve said many times that Pixie Lott is like a good old fashioned popstar, and in true good old fashioned popstar fashion she followed up two upbeat singles with a sweeping winter ballad. The video for ‘Cry Me Out’ was admittedly horrendous (where was the snow and candles and big winter coat?!) but the song itself is brilliant, and houses that brilliant opening line “I got your emails, you just don’t get females…”.

So what do you reckon has made our Top 10?

Nathan feat. Flo Rida – “Caught Me Slippin’”

The Rage Against the Machine Facebook campaign didn’t reach the States, which meant that Ke$ha could claim the Billboard Hot 100 top spot without controversy. This means that Jay-Z and Alicia Keys moves 1-2 this week with “Empire State of Mind.”

Last week, Ke$ha only marginally beat Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” As “TiK ToK” now reigns atop, this means that she’s the first female artist to reach the top with a debut single since Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance.”  To be totally fair, Ke$ha did already top the charts earlier this year, but her appearance on Flo Rida’s “Right Round” was non-credited. Expect her album Animal to reach stores in January 2010.

As WelcheMusic reported a few days back, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the acoustic version of “Empire State of Mind” would reach the charts. As it turns out, this version does debut at No.55. The highest new entry comes from Eminem, whose “Hell Breaks Loose” comes in at No.29. It features Dr. Dre and was added to the release of Relapse:Refill, a re-issue with bonus tracks. It’s worth mentioning that Usher enters at No.94 with “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home).” It’s the second track lifted from the forthcoming album Raymond vs. Raymond. The first one, “Papers,” peaked at a disappointing No.31. Usher hasn’t reached the upper reaches since “Love in this Club” topped the charts in the beginning of 2008. Maybe he should record a duet it with Alicia Keys – remember “My Boo” in 2004…

Even with controversy regarding the issue of plagiarism or not, DJ Aliks gives us what we’ve always wondered: a complete mashup of the G-Dragon’s “Heartbreaker” with Flo-Rida’s “Right Round.”

On the side note, Aliks writes:

Critics pushed back for half a sec, the song still comes out well played and seems would’ve been picked for a remix stage, if GD had done one. With that said, there’s definitely more than a hint into why Sony claimed plagiarism rights on the song. The song structure of both songs are the same and even with GD’s unique twists here and there, it’s hard to just say “sampling.” The latter part of the song however is completely different from Flo-Rida’s, so how we do categorize this?

At first I didn’t really like this song, but its been playing ALL weekend, and has now grown on me! lol… I didn’t like it at first cause i see a lot of the  rappers that are good still and such go to this ”pop music” type of shit. But in a way, I can understand it at the same time. Since thats all you see on tv and the radio, its more of a competition. So why not put out a pop-ish style song to play on the radio, and get more people to listen to your stuff and buy your cd, its pretty damn smart I think. Of course there will be others who do not feel the same way but oh well, get over it!

It’s that time of year again…Jebus where has it gone? The team here at Functioning Alcoholic Towers have been comparing the tunes they downloaded onto their i-Pods over the last twelve months in a bid to select the finest single to grace our collective ears since the start of the year.

As in previous years the criteria is simple. The short list is limited to songs that entered the U.K. Top 40 between January 1st and December 31st 2009. Cover versions are allowed but re-releases are not (sorry Mr. Jackson being dead just isn’t good enough).

So, without more to do, here is countdown of the best (and worst) singles of 2009.

CATEGORY ONE: SONGS THAT DIDN’T DESERVE TO CHART.

3rd place:  Susan Boyle – Wild Horses.  What a miserable piece of shit. I’ll bet that Mick Jagger is rolling in his grave. A bigger insult to our ears than the Leona Lewis version of Run.

2nd place: Robbie Williams – Bodies. We hope to fuck that Jesus didn’t die for that!

1st Place: Cheryl Cole – Fight For This Love. Old Ms. Tweedy might be fitter than a butchers dog but she hasn’t got a note in her head. Couple this with the stupidly awkward dance routine in the video and you have one of the most cringeworthy musical moments of the year.

CATEGORY TWO: THE ALSO RANS

(Songs that were almost good enough – but not quite)

In NO particular order:

Cascadia – Evacuate The Dance Floor.  Lyrically clever with a brilliant hook.

Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling. One of our least favourite bands in the world finally came up trumps.

Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream. Drop a couple of E’s and listen to it over and over.

Ke$ha – Tic Tok. A late entry but impossible to get out of your head. A real, bona fide EARWORM.

Timbaland Ft Soshy & Nelly – Morning After Dark. We all like Timbaland. He’s like a big friendly bear that just shat on your carpet- you wanna punch him but it would be wrong. Tune ain’t bad either.

Lady Ga Ga – Poker Face. Easily her best track of the year.

Flo Rida – Right Round. We bet Pete Burns is very annoyed.

Lady Sovereign – So Human. The little minx came back after a two-year break with a re-working of The Cure’s Close To Me. LS where have you been? We missed your cheeky antics.

Veronicas – Untouched. If only this had been a little better it would have made our top three.

Pitbull – I Know You Want Me. One of those songs that you shouldn’t like but secretly do.

Green Day – 21 Guns. Oh so close to being another Wake Me Up When Tomorrow Comes…but not quite.

Mini Viva – Left My Heart In Tokyo. Unfortunately it’s impossible to erase the memory of the cack video that accompanied what was a cracking tune.

Take By Trees – Sweet Child Of Mine. The first time you hear it it is spellbinding – but it goes off the boil after repeated listens.

CATEGORY THREE: SPECIAL MERIT.

David Guetta Ft. Kelly Roland. If only it hadn’t been played to death this would have been in our top three. Brilliant, brilliant & brilliant.

It was far from a silent night at Y100’s Jingle Ball 2009 as Timbaland and Brandy electrified the stage with their Shock Value II collaboration “Meet in tha Middle” at Fort Lauderdale’s Bank Atlantic Center on Saturday (Dec. 12). As Flo Rida prepares for the Grammy’s where he’ll take on Eminem, Mos Def, Q Tip and Common for ‘Best Rap Album’, he’s garnering praise for his hit single “Low.”

The single has broken a new record and been named the top-selling digital song of the decade. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the T Pain laced record scoured over 5.2 million digital downloads toppling the competition from 1999 to the present.

Furthermore it remains the highest selling one-week digital single in history, with more than 636,000 downloads sold its debut week.

That’s not the last extremely successful single for Flo Rida. His hit “Right Round” was also named the highest selling digital download of all time with 1 million downloads in two weeks.

Wow…Flo Rida’ s doing crazy numbers because people are actually buying his records. Good for him!

Finally is break for most you guys out there and about time for some nice party music.  Three 6 Mafia jumps on the whole techno rap band wagon (which I am more tha enjoying) and gets Tiësto to produce their latest track ‘Feel It’.  Strong techno beat with features from Flo-Rida and Sean Kingston on the hook this really is a pretty solid track.  Off thier up coming album, ‘ Laws of Power’.

AntiMusic.Com: After bursting onto the scene in late 2007, Poe Boy/Atlantic recording artist Flo Rida has claimed a digital first. The Miami-based rapper’s debut smash single “Low,” from his debut album “Mail On Sunday,” has been named the top-selling digital song of the decade with over 5.2 million digital downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition, his 2009 hit single “Right Round” ranks #11 this decade, with nearly 4 million digital downloads sold.
This isn’t the first time Flo Rida has made digital history. “Right Round,” from the rapper’s 2009 album “R.O.O.T.S.” remains the highest-selling digital debut of all time. The track also remains the highest selling one-week digital single in history, with more than 636,000 downloads sold its debut week.

The former one-week record, which was held by Flo Rida for “Low,” ranks #2 all-time with more than 467,000 digital downloads sold in a single week. In addition, “Right Round” is the fastest-selling digital single ever, with 1 million downloads sold in just two weeks.

“Low” also ranks high on a handful of decade-end charts: #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, #4 on the Nielsen RingScan chart, #5 on Nielsen’s BDS Pop Songs chart, #8 on Billboard’s Radio Songs chart, and #13 on Nielsen’s BDS Rap Songs chart.

Flo Rida has been nominated for two Grammys this year. “R.O.O.T.S.” is nominated for Best Rap Album, his first time to be nominated in the category. Flo Rida is also included in the Album of the Year category for his contribution on Lady GaGa’s “The Fame.” In addition, Flo Rida is nominated for his second People’s Choice Award for Hip Hop Artist of the Year.

What’s more, Flo Rida was recently named one of People Magazine’s Sexiest Men Alive. The issue, which hit newsstands in late November, included fellow musicians Tim McGraw, Chris Daughtry, and Josh Groban.

Flo Rida is currently in the studio recording his third album, yet to be titled. The collection is expected to be released Spring 2010.

The Grammy’s seem early this year. It will air on Jan 31, 2010. After reading over the noms, I’m filled with apathy.  I actually have heard most of this music which says…nothing.  I will watch the show for the performances and for Album of the Year. I’m hoping DMB will finally get the recognition they deserve from their peers. I’m also excited for Maxwell.
