Asa ca in jurul orei 8:00, intr-o zi friguroasa de vineri, eleva de clasa a 11-a a ajuns in gara. Cu destinatia: evident Ploiesti. In timpul asta baiatul dragut era in tren deja.

Esti mica rau oricum.” Am zambit, macar a incercat.

Cu siguranta in gara aia m-am indragostit teribil. Ne-am indragostit. Eram clar fericiti.

Konferenssiin osallistui ay-liikkeiden edustajien lisäksi FLO:ssa tänä syksynä aloittanut Head of Trade Union and Labour Rights, Peter Hurst (tausta muun muassa seuraavissa organisaatioissa: International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers’ Associations (IUF), International Labour Organization (ILO) ja WWF) .

Flo’s friend Quinn is back and getting the can-do waitress into more sticky situations. Quinn

Flo’s friend Quinn is back and getting the can-do waitress into more sticky situations. Quinn’s wedding planning venture has become a success, leading her into a profitable side business of organizing honeymoons and other vacation getaways for DinerTown residents. The only problem is that every place she tends to send clients… turns out to be a total dump! Now she needs Flo’s help to rebuild five classic hotels, each in only ten days. Because in ten days her clients arrive and she can’t afford for them to be disappointed.

Flo’s too busy to even take off her apron, but she agrees to help her red-headed friend. In Hotel Dash: Suite Success, from Playfirst, Flo acts as bellboy and maid in five different hotels, each with ten fast-paced levels. This hotel time management game plays very much like a typical Diner Dash game.

Guests arrive in the lobby, where Quinn checks them in. Your job is to drag them into a room. Large groups of guests require larger rooms, while groups of one or two people can be placed in smaller rooms. Each group is a different primary color, and each room is also a primary color (based on the last group to occupy it). If you can match guests to a room that corresponds to their color, you’ll get a small score bonus. As you progress through the level, restoring the hotel, new rooms and hotel features become available.

Guests immediately need their luggage taken to their room. When they check out, they leave a garbage bag of dirty laundry at the door to be washed. (And presumably sent to their home? I’m not sure how this works. The check-out process is a bit odd in Dinertown. Guests pay at their room door instead of going back down to Quinn at the front desk.) Flo must cart guests’ luggage up to their room, settle their bill when they’re ready to check out, and take care of all their needs in between: room service, towels for the pool, mopping up the water guests constantly spill into the hallway, feeding their noisy dogs, taking their snapshots, waking them when they sleepwalk, and more.

As in all time management games, everything is accomplished by clicking. You can chain together as many commands as you want. Click on the luggage in the hallway, the room it needs to go to, a bag of laundry in the door of another room, etc., and Flo will move to each place in turn. However if you goof up and tell her to go to the wrong place (for example, sending a suitcase to the wrong room), you’ll have to restart the chain. The more like actions you accomplish in a single chain, the more bonus points you receive.

There’s no day and night cycle; guests arrive and leave at their whim.

Groups of guests arrive with five hearts floating above their heads. These hearts represent their satisfaction with their hotel stay. Keep them waiting for too long and their hearts will decrease… if they decrease completely, the guest will become angry and leave! The happier the guest, the bigger the tip. Some guests are more impatient than others. Luckily Flo can bring ice to any room to improve the guests’ spirits. What do they do with the ice? Beats me, but they jump for joy when it arrives.

Each hotel has a special suite that Flo and Quinn must decorate before ten days are up and Quinn’s charges arrive. These suites are upgraded by spending Star Bills to purchase extravagances to make the suite look nicer. For example, a floor lamp costs 25 Star Bills. Yes, I know that’s expensive! When I was a kid a floor lamp would have to speak seven different languages if someone expected my parents to pay more than, say, twenty Star Bills for it! You earn Star Bills by upgrading the regular rooms in the hotel: every room you purchase a star upgrade for earns Star Bills when guests stay in it.

Hotel Dash: Suite Success game also offers a regular score, based on how many guests you put up, your color-matching bonuses, whether anyone left in anger, bonuses for fast service, and tips based on the customer’s experience. This score acts as your cash fund from which you purchase cosmetic upgrades for the hotel. You can make the elevators faster, get a cart for Flo so she can carry more things at once, put flowers and artwork in the hallways, buy better mops and ice machines, etc.

I’m afraid I wasn’t too impressed with the graphics… it’s been years but we’re still serving the same smirking teen girl customers as in previous games. That didn’t bother me too much, because there are many different customer types included, from ghosts to celebrities to loud-mouthed cell phone talkers to sports fanatics. However the jerky/stuttering way Flo and guests climb in and out of the hotel elevators did annoy me. There’s nothing smooth about it, and as everyone is constantly riding the elevators, it’s something Playfirst shouldn’t have cut corners on.

In the new installment of PlayFirst’s dash series, Hotel Dash: Suite Success, Quinn decides to

In the new installment of PlayFirst’s dash series, Hotel Dash: Suite Success, Quinn decides to expand her wedding business by offering honeymoons. But the hotel business can be more complicated than one thinks, with rundown estates, sabotages, ghosts, and guests who do not get along with each other. Why you have to enjoy this new game with a pinch of salt will be explained in this review.

Hotel Dash: Suite Success features two different modes: story and endless. Story consists of five different hotels with ten levels each, in which you always have to earn a specific amount of money to proceed, and an even higher amount to reach the expert goal. The point of the endless mode is to survive as long as possible. In each of those five hotels you can choose between three levels of difficulty and can afford to lose five guests until the game ends. More experienced players will be very glad about the endless mode, because the story mode lacks any challenge known from previous similar titles.

The click management gameplay resembles former dash games (such as Diner Dash or Wedding Dash), but features some interesting new twists. Guests will wait near the entrance for you to drop them onto one of the free rooms of your hotel. If you match the color of a guest’s clothes and the color of the room, you will earn bonus money that can be used to buy upgrades along with your other earnings.

On top of the money you can also earn stars by upgrading rooms. Let’s say you upgrade one room with one star – in this case you will earn one star each time when a guest checks out of this room. These stars can be used to upgrade one VIP-room in every hotel, but unfortunately those upgraded VIP-rooms have no influence on the actual gameplay.

Elevators connecting different floors are the main new feature of Hotel Dash: Suite Success, which Flo, Quinn and the other guests have to use to move inside the hotels. Different services, items, and rooms are on different floors, which simply means that the elevators are the key element in every hotel for handling the requests of guests. On top of that Flo is privileged when it comes to using the elevator, so that guests have to wait for it on a regular basis. Fortunately you can also upgrade a cart for Flo which enables her to carry up to six things at the same time to shorten her ways as much as possible.

Flo has to fulfill numerous requests for the guests, such as carrying their suitcases, delivering food, towels, or pillows, checking out, or making wake up calls. Apart from that there are also disasters to avert, which will be familiar from the Wedding Dash series, and those disasters are actually the only situations where Quinn is brought into action. I think it is a pity to include such an important character of DinerTown in a game, and then to barely use her.

The variety of guest types has even increased compared to former dash games, and this feature sets Hotel Dash: Suite Success game apart from other time management games. These guest types differ in their patience, their preferences and their behaviors, and it really takes some time to get used to those differences and to incorporate those in your own strategy. VIP guests won’t let other guests go past their rooms if they stand outside waiting for something, ghosts will spook other guests, don’t use the elevator and don’t eat, while the fashionista brings along three suitcases instead of one.

Particularly because of the large number of features, twists, guest types, and tasks I really don’t know why this game has become the easiest of all dash games. It is possible to breeze through the story mode easily and reaching expert goal at first try in every level, without developing any special strategy. Thus the reward of finally beating a very tricky level is completely lacking, which will be a great disappointment to many players without a doubt. However, the pace of the game is still quite fast, so that you will at least feel entertained despite the easiness.

Apart from this lack of challenge, the game delivers the usual dash experience, without irritating bugs, a charming storyline, and adorable graphics. When it comes to quality time management games with quirky stories and interesting twists, PlayFirst still is the company to look at. Hotel Dash: Suite Success is as polished as it could be and will meet the expectations of most dash fans. The endless mode somewhat compensates for the easy story mode, so that there is also a challenge for the more experienced players.

*just a quick one

Well, this commercial is stupid. It isn’t funny, Flo isn’t funny, the guy who looks like Steve-O isn’t funny, and progressive insurance isn’t funny. So the joke is… I don’t know, there isn’t one. She just kind of talks… for the whole fucking time. This commercial suggests she rides a motorcycle. She pantomimes riding a motorcycle and the guy, who’s just trying to make conversation and be nice, suggests she rides a 500. Then Flo, acting like a total bitch, one-ups the guy and says she rides some better motorcycle showing her vast knowledge of the subject. The guy who looks like steve-o clearly doesn’t give a shit about her, and to avoid talking to her again, ends the conversation. I don’t know why she felt she had to prove her knowledge of motorcycles. It’s just like someone who feels the need to announce something they’ve done, like scoring a goal, because they didn’t get a reaction for anyone. The go “yeah! I scored!” and nobody fucking cares because we all saw you score and clearly don’t give a shit because we don’t feel like wasting breath acknowledging it.

So what did I learn at the end of all these progressive commercials? Flo is consistently unfunny and I’m muting the commercials every time they come on. If I could give this commercial a rating out of 5, I wouldn’t. 1 isn’t low enough.

My son left this morning with some leftovers and his favorite cake. Since I already had the turkey out, I cut off the rest of the meat and threw the carcass out. My husband asked if I was going to boil the carcass to make soup. I looked at him like he was out of his mind. I gave Gus and the kitties some of the yucky stuff. Olive said, ‘no, thanks’. Flo ate a good deal of it. I had to give her a separate plate because she kept growling at everyone else. I think she is going to be one of those round kitties. I’ll do what I can, but it’s hard with other cats to feed.

Ah, life on the farm… what could be more relaxing? Just about anything, according to the Smiths! Help these city slickers get a grip on the family farm as the entertaining hustle of the Diner Dash series goes pastoral. Care for cows, goats, chickens, and sheep while growing tomatoes, corn and pumpkins. You’ll even enjoy the occasional glass of lemonade and fill an order or two for Flo! It’s all in a day’s work in Dairy Dash!

Tsekkiin perustettiin vastikään itäisen Euroopan ensimmäinen Reilun kaupan edistämisjärjestö the Czech Fair Trade Association. Uusi järjestö näyttää suuntaa koko järjestelmälle.

Alun alkaen Reilu kauppa –sertifiointia pyöritettiin moninapaisessa järjestelmässä, jossa eri maiden kansalliset merkkiyhdistykset vastasivat pitkälle yksin oman maansa Reilun kaupan asioiden hoitamisesta.

Welcome to the third installment in a week-long look at the state of Fair Trade (coffee). In Monday

Welcome to the third installment in a week-long look at the state of Fair Trade (coffee). In Monday’s post I suggested that the current critiques of Fair Trade may create opportunities for innovation, and on Tuesday I shared some of the best literature I have seen documenting Fair Trade’s shortcomings. Today I want to suggest why Fair Trade alone is not enough to fulfill the (exorbitant) expectations that many consumers have.

From my perspective, it is because the reality of poverty in coffee growing communities in so complex and the threats to smallholder farmers are so diverse that no single certification can hope to address them all.

Fair Trade — as the name suggests — is concerned primarily with improving the terms of trade bewteen farmers who grow coffee and the people who buy it from them. It has been associated with lots of other positive developments on the ground in the coffeelands, including cooperative development, technical assistance, transparency and traceability, and pre-harvest finance, among others. But its primary point of distinction in the marketplace are the preferential terms of trade. During the coffee crisis (more on that later), when farm-gate prices for shade-grown, high-altitude coffee in Central America fell to 20 cents per pound or less, this was a matter of life and death. Under less dire market conditions, however, it turns out that unfair terms of trade are not necessarily the leading source of vulnerability among smallholder farmers. For me, some of the key underlying factors that limit the impact of Fair Trade include:

Land. One of the biggest constraints farmers face is access to land. In general, the amount of revenue a farmer can generate through agriculture depends on how much she can grow and what price she gets at market for her product. The very sophisticated formula looks something like this: volume x price = revenue. When your farm is tiny — and Fair Trade farms are, by definition — there is little you can do to affect the first variable in that equation. Imagine trying to coax a living out of a farm the size of the average suburban backyard in the United States. (Don’t forget to turn it to a 45-degree angle first.)

Production costs. If we layer into the equation above a consideration of costs of production, the formula looks like this: (volume x price) – costs of production = net income. We just saw that a Fair Trade farmer has a small and fixed amount of land. Although there have been some increases in Fair Trade prices and differentials, they have been slow in coming and have still not reached adequate levels. Now consider that the costs of production are rising, which effectively negates the beneficial impact on income that comes from rising prices. Thorough studies that incorporate the opportunity costs of labor-intensive organic farming have put the cost of production for organic farming at well over $2 per pound. Yikes.

The market. Market demand for Fair Trade simply isn’t sufficient to absorb enough Fair Trade production to have the kind of impact we all wish it would. Notwithstanding the astounding growth of Fair Trade coffee consumption, it has not been able to keep pace with increases in production. Now consider the small-scale farmer who may grow 500 pounds of coffee a year. She may only sell 200 pounds on Fair Trade terms. If the price differential between the Fair Trade minimum and the prevailing market price is $0.20 per pound, she has an additional $40 in her pocket. That can go a long way, but may not change her living conditions in any fundamental way.

Non-farming activities. Rural livelihoods are under pressure in large measure due to the three factors mentioned above — limited access to productive land, rising costs of productions, and few market opportunities. Over the past generation, farmers have steadily earned more of their income from non-agricultural activities, including wage labor, commerce or small enterprise and in many parts of the coffeelands, remittances. If Fair Trade coffee is only one of several economic activities, an improvement in the terms of trade in that one dimension of the household economy may not make a big difference in the way families live.

Financial services. Many smallholder farmers live on the razor’s edge of poverty and can slip into misery with the slightest provocation. Those of us who can afford to drink specialty coffee have lots of financial instruments at our disposal to ensure this doesn’t happen to us: pensions, 401(k) plans, health insurance, credit cards and even interest-bearing savings accounts. These are in scandalously short supply in the coffeelands.

The “vulnerability context.” With apologies for the development lingo, but I am determined to do what I can to expand the use of this term. I think I love it because it is so self-explantory: the vulnerability context refers to all the many perils that threaten rural livelihoods in the coffeelands. Imagine working against the structural challenges identified above and also coping with recurring natural disaster. Or systemic violence. (As I write this post from a capital city in the coffeelands I can hear the report of pistol fire through the open window.) Or drought and hunger. Or de facto ethnic apartheid. Or the long-term impacts of climate change. Fair Trade can’t do much against these foes.

What do farmers do when they are beginning the slide into desperation? While strategies are very site-specific based on the range of options available locally, there is a pattern of behavior that is fairly consistent across cultures and countries, and it is not pretty. A common first step is to reduce “elective” expenses. Like school. And medicine. And meat. Many families sell their coffee forward at a serious discount to someone who is probably less scrupulous than he should be with a neighbor in distress. They may start cutting down trees to sell them or plant annual crops. They will migrate in search of opportunity. But not perhaps before selling off other productive assets, like livestock. Or land. Somewhere along the way they will have asked for a loan they can’t afford to repay. In the end, each step obeys the logic of immediate need, and each step undermines the long-term economic viability of the family by reducing its ability to produce the one thing that had driven their hope: high-quality, shade-grown coffee.

Of course, none of these things can be blamed on Fair Trade. But against this complex backdrop, it seems unfair to expect the current incarnation of Fair Trade to be enough on its own.
