The Saint David’s United Church Men’s Group holds an annual art show and sale that not only supports local artists but also injects much-needed funds back into the community. This is an excellent opportunity to see quality artwork and support a very good cause!

I am pleased to be participating in this Art Show and Sale again this year. Things have been pretty busy for me with hanging my show “Full Spectrum” at the Imperial (still showing until November 14th). So, I have been busily painting away for this event.

Below are three of the four paintings I will be exhibiting. The fourth painting, well is still a work in progress. It is a large acrylic painting of Delphinium. Stay tuned… this will most likely be my next blog post.

Friday, October 28th and Saturday, October 29th

7 Gondola Point Road

Rothesay

We have a backyard pond. The novelty has never worn off. Each season it is so different – offering us many new things to enjoy, much like a natural lake. Only much, much smaller. In the spring we have froggie visitors that delight us. And the other night – a frog spooked me when it jumped in front of my path into the pond. Apparently he has taken up residency – it has been there ever since.

We make a point to visit each day and look for the changes. What is ready to bloom, what has grown seeming overnight, you get the idea. The daily feeding the kio and gold fish are a huge part of this routine as well. (We really do not necessarily like to talk about the daily cleaning of the filter basket and other pond maintenance activities that presented this year.)

And so, armed with green gold, olive green, perylene green and sap green I began this painting adventure. Although the lily pads took a lot of concentration – they were fun to paint. Monochromatic. But fun none the less. The little leopard frogs were trickier to scketch in than they were to paint. Almost my favourite bits of painting are the tiny little bugs. I had to take my glasses off to work on them.

So, it is not a stretch that I must paint it (er… again). The lily pads and water lilies are from our pond. The leopard frogs are actually residents at the pond at Hooper’s Studio in Hampton, NB. So, this painitng is a composite of a few different photos. Their pond is also small and is providing haven to over 40 leopard frogs (at last count). Beside their pond is a rather large net. When I inquired what the net was for I was told to catch the bullfrogs. My puzzled look brought about this explaination “they eat the leopard frogs so Kathy catches them and relocates them to another area of the yard”. I love this story.

Anyway, after photographing the frogs I knew I need to incorporate a few of them into this painting. Along with the odd lacewing and dragon fly. Enjoy looking for them. Peek-a-boo!

Somehow, the whole time I was working on this painting, I kept thinking about Peppermint Candies. You know, the ones with the swirl of red and swirl of white? It first occured to me as I was sketching them out – and then as I started to apply the watercolor paint I just kept thinking about them.

Awhile back, I checked on my framing inventory and realized I had five really nice frame sets for watercolor paintings and so I set out to complete five in one month. And I did it. This is the last piece that I told myself I had to do in this timeframe.

I love the colors of this flower. The pinks are flaming and yet there are so many subtle shades. The photos that I worked from were actually more on the bluish side – I chose to modify the colors to the impression they had on me.

This painting is 12.5 x 8″ wide (unframed size) and is painted on Arches 300lb paper.

Although I said I would never paint them again – I am at it – and am planning at least one more.

A number of years ago I painted a large watercolor of these delicate blossoms, sold it and received three commissions to do similar ones. And so I thought that I was apple blossomed out.

Only we have five mature apple trees and two young pear trees in our yard. And they are truly beautiful. Each year as the blossoms open, I am out in the yard photographing them. Over and over. And.. there are so darn many of them! This angle…that angle… maybe with more sky… maybe with less sky. Obviously I am really attracted to this flower. Maybe just to anything that blooms in the spring.

So, once this painting is complete, I hope to paint another on a larger scale with the sky as the focal point – much like the painting Blue on Blue below.

These lovely flowers grace the inside of our chicken wire fenced in garden. We moved all our lilies into this rustic enclosure – in hopes to foil the white tail deer population that absolutely belive lily blooms are deer ice cream. Well our plan work surperbly…well, until last year.

They have leaned longingly into the fence for a few years now – and managed to bend down a section making it easy for them to leap over. And well, we cannot figure out how to repair it with out completely rebuilding it!

The deer love lilies. All kinds of lilies – as much as we do. Only we do not eat ours! The lilies grow amoung the asparagus (which deer do not eat) and the mint (wish they would eat) and the clematis (crap shoot on this one, well they will sometimes eat the blooms).

And so, in a effort to get to enjoy these lovelies, I must paint them. This ia a 12″ x 12″ watercolor on Arches 300lb paper. I think as time permits I will paint this again on Ampersand Aquabord in a larger size.

I am so excited to be participating in the Kings County Studio Tour this June 9th and 10th - http://www.studiotour-nb.com/ . This means, of course, I have to be prepared. Now I have been painting for quite awhile getting ready for a solo exhibit “Full Spectrum” to be hung at the Imperial Theatre the end of August this year. So I have a lot of really large paintings completed for this. The gap I have is for smaller pieces.

So what does any artist operating under self imposed deadlines do? Why I checked my framing inventory and, this time wrote the sizes down and went searching for subjects that would be fun to paint and coordinate with my three burgundy frames and two gold ones.

So far so good, I have two completed and the others are lightly drawn out. There are more petunias, a different variety, pretty lillies (I have no idea which variety) and apple blossoms. I will be ready for any color other than pink. Oh, by the way, I have a large painting in progress – pretty pink peonies under way as well. More to follow on this one -just likely not too soon!

And so, countless hours, untold amounts of staring and figuring and color balancing… I think this painting is finally done!

I knew today that it was in my reach to finish this piece. I hunkered down at 8am and just finished it at 7pm.

I spent a lot of time deleloping the foliage. After I thought I was all done – I looked at it with squinty eyes and realized that I had to deepen the colors of the leaves. I went back in with a wash of terre vert (a blueish green) and intensified the leaves. And then once again thought I was finished.

Then I looked at it again with squinty eyes. Saw a number of the rose petal has to be deepened and some of them needed a boost of personality (more colors).

I looked at it again and thought I was finsihed. Then I realised the tiny fly had no legs or antennae.

I fixed up the bug and hung the painting on my fridge – yes my fridge. And am determined no more squinty eyes.

I am declaring this painting finsihed. At least until tomorrow when I look at it with fresh eyes.

Then the fun really begins when you go back in and crispen (is this even a word?) up the edges and freshen up certain colors. The most challenging part is knowing when to stop and resisting the urge to overwork the painting.

This painting is custom framed. I haad to resist the urge to use a goldenrod colored inner mat – too trendy – the finished result is quite lovely. Greenish inner mat – off white outer mat with a v-grove.

Then the scrutinizing begins – I look at the painting more holistically now. Are the colors true to life? Are the shadows painted with enough contrast? Are the lights and darks balanced to a believable state? Are the tones balanced appropriately over the whole piece for the lighting of the day?

The images that I worked from were captured on a hazy day so the shadows are not particularly defined. So no high key contrast here.

Backyard Blooms

Back to our yard in the beautiful Kennebecasis Valley in New Brunswick, where the resident white tail deer population regards planters as their own personal salad bowl! We have a number of wrought iron planter hangers at a variety of heights. Needless to say we have more success with the higher planters.

Red geraniums are a staple in our planters, as are petunias and any daisy like flower I can find. I love the mix of color you can plant together and still have it look good. I dabbled over the years with backyard color, various monochromatic then whites and on to what ever strikes my fancy at the time. It almost always comes back to red. Or Yellow. Pure happy colors. And I cannot wait to paint them.

This piece was a bit tricky – tricky to draw out and real tricky to attain depth and contrast while painting with reds. I worked on this continuously for two days. When I finally stepped back to scrutinize my work, I was pleased with the effect of painting red on red. It is dimensional and representational of our back yard basket.

We live in a suburban area. Which in New Brunswick means we share our property and gardens with a population of white tail deer. Although beautiful, they are known in our region as “garden rats”. Almost nothing is sacred. They eat almost everything! Especially tulips, lilies and hostas. Apparently tulips and lilies are like candy to them. They wait until the bloom is about to burst open with color and munch them while we are sleeping.

Every now and then I am successful in foiling their snack. We apply blood meal regularly, especially after each rain – apparently, the deer do not like the smell (I understand, I don’t like it either).

This grouping of tulips were spared from the ravenous appetites of Bambi and friends. I photographed them each day – quite a novelty to see open tulips in these parts. I could not wait to start the painting. (Although I had to finish “Amethyst Lilacs” and the “Quince” paintings first.

So, “In Full Bloom” is my first completed painting in 2011. Here is hoping for another colorful tulip display this coming spring.

Mid-spring each year, we have a wonderful quince shrub that presents us with a shock of color. I am always surprised and pleased with the display. To the point where we have purchased two more quince shrubs. Interestingly enough, the colors on the two newer plants are quite different from the older original shrub.

When we are sitting on the deck and see this blaze of reddish orange at the back of the property, you just have to walk over to admire it up close. Careful not to get too close, it is a thorny shrub. Also somewhat deer resistant which is another reason we acquired two more.

Last year, I completed a quarter sheet watercolor of the quince. I love how these “vermillion” blooms are highlighted with yellows and yet are contrasted with deep shades of red and scarlet in the shadows. Especially when it is back lit by the sun. When the smaller watercolor was completed, I was pleased with the painting but thought I did not achieve the overall effect I was striving for. It needed to be bigger so it would present bolder.

This Painting was completed quite quickly by my usual standards. I used a mask to preserve the white areas, then poured pink and pale green. Once dried, I applied more mask and poured more watercolor paint and so on…

Overall the painting took two days to complete. I think the hardest part was first applying the mask and them removing it. Still have not decided if I like mask or not. I usually carefully paint around things.

I am pretty happy with this process – it is fun!

Finally finished. This is a mixed water media piece on Arches 300lb cold pressed paper. I have never combined acrylic and watercolor previously. So, I have learned a lot from this process – get over yourself – use a masking solution. I started with the sky – four watercolor washes and three in acrylic. The incredibly stubborn part of me resits masking. So I started with the sky, painting around the flowers – big mistake. This left a dark ridge around the flowers – several washes later, hmmm… I had a problem to fix.

I subscribe to the theory that is isn’t anything you cannot fix. So, I pulled out my acrylic tube of cobalt blue- mixed it with the watercolor paint I was using and it worked – only took three washes to fix it! Did I mention that I am stubborn with this stuff?

Anyway, I love the result! On to more experimentation!

Ah, as Christmas approaches it is often quite prudent for artists to complete a number of small works. These are good as possible donations to requesting charities but also very marketable this time of year – more so that larger works.

I struggle with small paintings. They are almost as much work as larger pieces and they take a disproportionate amount of time to complete. Take this little star fighter lily. Only 5” x 5” big, er… small. The drawing took no time really – but painting that level of detail that small is icky picky work. I get a great deal of satisfaction with large freer brush work that I apply with larger scale acrylics. Then the fun really begins with I get into the details. Love this stage. It is when a painting comes to life. To me this is magic and very satisfying.

So it would make sense that I would also love the detail and concentration of the smaller pieces. And I do. It is just they are small and that is the whole point. You have to be closer to the work to see the amount of effort.

In defence of painting small – sometimes they can be outright fun pieces. You get to experiment with new subjects and or techniques without having to invest mega hours or gallons of paint.

I love the colours of these flowers, not pink, not red and not orange, but really all shades in between. Tulips when in full bloom make me happy. I am not completely sure, but to me they represent free spirits. Out in the early spring, bowing in the wind – leaning into the sun.

This stand grows in my front garden under an apple tree. The most challenging thing about gardening with tulips is keeping the deer from eating them completely. As soon as the stalks are out of the ground, I start applying blood meal. It does help – I also think a spray of safers soap also keeps the deer from munching. I take a lot of photos as soon as the blooms start to open. Cliché maybe – but I really like to get shots of backlit tulips.

It is always an adventure when you embark to paint a series of related works. In this case, I am experimenting with the Aquabord watereolor painting surface. I really like the vibrancy you can achieve once you figure out how to layre – er, actually, once you realize you have to have patience to let the layres dry completely before you apply the next one.

This is an iris from my garden and one of my favourites. We grow a number of bearded irises – but thsi one always stops me in my tracks. The blues are so intense and the white so crisp.

Ah yes, another watercolor on Aquabord. Finally think I am getting the hang of the surface! It is almost impossible to do multiple washes or layring on it – the under colour “lifts” or worse yet – mixes with the top wash. And yet the finished painting is absolutely vibrant.

These pansies remind me of the old fashioned ones in every country garden I saw as a child, or the old china teacup with the delightful pansies on them - hence the paintings title.

So I link it, and once I figure out a framing solution – I will let you know if I intend to purchase more. I still will admit, for any intricate and serious work, I will always use Arched 300lb cold pressed paper.

Oh, by the way – I think they are “bluish” not so purple?

After finishing the “Amethyst Lilac” painting, I was determined to paint somethig less complex and not purple. Well, being who I am, gravitating towards complexity in everthing I do, I started this painting on Aquabord. (This is burgundy with some purple….)

Aquabord is a relatively new hard surface for painting with watercolours. The beauty of this surface is that the completed piece is sprayed with acrylic Krylon archival varnish when completed and framed without glass. Thie piece is protected. As so many people now prefer to purchase paintings with out glass in order to emiminate glare from lighting and windows – this is a nice option. The main thing is, the work becomes a mixed media piece (remember the acrylic varnish?) Oh yes, the fraing is also less expensive – less the matting and glass. Aquabord aslo comes cradled – my next purchase will be cradled – then no framing required at all – just finish the edges!

The surface is tricky, the colour holds well, but a mis placed drop can remove the pigment. Also, when painting wet-in-wet, I find it harder to get an edge than with Arched 300lb paper. So, I love the surface, nice for a change – but will not be giving up working on paper.

I think there should be a drum roll with this…..

This was no small undertaking. I have been working on this piece for what seems like forever and a day. What makes this piece interesting is that the more you look at it, the more dimentional it becomes! I went through more paint imaginable on this – I guess this is typical of large works. Always makes me marvel though. Watercolours are seemilgly endless in thier supply until you take on a full sheet.

I am ready to retire the mauves… for at least another painting or three. I have already started an iris – shades of ivory, burgundy and a little bit of mauve.

This painting is a full sheet transparent watercolour of lollypop lilies from my garden. This is one of my favourite flowers. I love the cranberry tips on the petals and the subtle ivory/white shades of this lily and the way the sun spots create litle highlights. This painting took a very long time to complete.

I have painted similar versions in acrylic twice – I this this flower called out to be created again only this time in watercolor

This is an acrylic painting of blanket flowers in my garden. This painting seemed to go on and on forever. Layer afer layer of transparent washes to get the intense colours. But in the end – I am glad that I stayed with it. It reminds me of a garden party.

My husband and I make wine – and every year we make a summer wine, usually a blush. One of the most appealing characteristics of summer wines are in it’s beautiful colours. Soft yet distinct shades of raspberry, pinks and soft wines shades.

This lovely bloom is a tree peony that grows in the corner of our garden off our pergola. It is beautifully custom framed, double matteted with a wine coloured inner mat. This is the second full sheet watercolour that I have painted. Truly a labour of love. Framed size is 28 x 38″.
