It could be quite easy for us to simply ignore “Flourish” while completing other course work for this semester but we are also well aware that that would be unwise. “Flourish” is a full time job and neglecting it would prove to be downright stupid.

We have been allocated a supervisor already (which will be one of our lecturers) though we are yet to find out which one it is. The suspense is killing us

So, the plan is to talk with our supervisor as soon as we can next week and see what our next plan of action is.

Until later,

If one has followed me since my blogging journey began in 2007, he or she may know that my birthday

If one has followed me since my blogging journey began in 2007, he or she may know that my birthday is November 7. Well, tomorrow is November 7. I’ll be turning fifteen. A multiple of five. I love numbers that are multiples of five. I don’t know why, I just do, so I’m super excited about tomorrow. I’m fifteen and flourishing.

For my fifteenth birthday, my dad, mom, sister, three friends of mine, and I are going to a city near the NC/SC border, called Charlotte. It’s really the closest big city to me, and we go there from time to time. This time, we’re renting an SUV and taking three of my friends with: Tyler, Callan, and Nick. In Charlotte, we’re going to go to a mall first with great stores, unlike the one here in Winston. Then after we kill a few hours, we’re going out to dinner to my favorite restaurant, Buca di Beppo. I love the pizza, pasta, chicken, potatoes, everything on the menu! I also like the atmosphere of the restaurant itself. It’s one of those places where you dress up and shower before going to, but it’s not too super elegant. It’s perfect!

These plans show that I am flourishing as a young man. I’ve really been trying hard in the friend field, and I think I’m doing pretty well. I have three really good friends, and so I’m happy. Of course, Michael would be the first on the birthday attendance sheet, but he can’t make it. Boohoo. I’m also blooming academically as well.

In English, I’ve had to do many writing assignments, from writing a haiku, to writing a sonnet, to doing numerous papers, including a research paper in which is being written at the moment. Whenever I finish a poem or paper, I feel such gratification. After I finish, I read other peoples’ and I get blown away by how much better my writings are. That makes me feel so happy. Of course, it’s rude to gloat, so instead, I just help others.

I’m not the only person proud of me. My English teacher enjoys me a lot. Just today, when she was checking bibliographies for our research papers, which was a requirement due today, she saw that I sourced an email. She asked, “What is this? An email?” Then, I asked, “Is it okay?” and she just looked at me with a blank stare, as if she was in La-La Land, then she said, “Sorry. Can you repeat your question? I was blown away that you took the initiative to email your author to use in your essay. I’m so glad you took the initiative, Connor. Thank you!” I was so happy with myself as I walked back to my seat.

Still, I please more people than just my English teacher and myself. My parents are impressed with me as well. My report card arrived today for the first quarter. On it: all As. Midterms: As. Everything was As. I’m in virtually all honors classes, and I still achieved As. My parents were very happy to see me succeeding in such difficult classes.

That is all for now, guys.

Author of Gardening Eden and Flourish conference speaker Michael Abbaté is trying to spend November

Author of Gardening Eden and Flourish conference speaker Michael Abbaté is trying to spend November generating zero solid garbage. Anyone want to join him? Here’s what Michael writes on his blog announcement about No Waste November:

“You and I are trash machines. We each generate nearly one ton of garbage each year. The nearly 250 million tons of garbage we produce in the United States would fill Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands in New Jersey 737 times each year. That’s twice a day, every day. That’s a bunch of rubbish!

So, for the month of November, Vicki and I are trying a little experiment. We are going to strive to produce no garbage for a month. Our compost pile and recycling bins will be our friends. Admittedly, we will have to make some serious choices about the purchases that face us the next month. Instead of just shopping for price, quality and convenience, we are going to be thinking about packaging, utility and reusability. We are going to refuse to make refuse.

So, for the next month, I will be talkin’ trash! Daily, I will write about our successes and failures, the things we learn, and the things we regret. The goal: keep the trash can empty! Keep up with our progress here, and join us in this effort. Let’s do what we can to keep from throwing things “away”.

After all, away is not just some imaginary neverland – it is an actual place on our planet. Garbage just gets moved from my house to another place in God’s creation that we collectively decided it would be OK to trash. It can be nearby, or it can be thousands of miles away, messing creation by spoiling the land it is placed in, fouling the air through incineration, and by polluting by transporting it. Can we make these places smaller, more local, less frequent and less degrading to Creation’s natural systems?

So, go ahead and jump into the waste stream with me. If you want to read more about the impacts trash has on our planet, read Gardening Eden, pages 207-217.”

Michael writes about his family’s effort in terms of its effect on the creation. I’ll bet the bigger result will be the effect on him and his wife, ask they’ll be demonstrating with their actions what kind of people they want to be–responsible and careful rather then reckless and careless.

So what in the world is Life Coaching you ask???

Well last week I gave you a taste of what Life coaching was. Today I will go into a little more depth.

- I help guide, support and encourage my client to reach their goals and live a life they desire.

- Coaches work with functional people to become more functional.

- We help people who are stuck to become unstuck.

- Life Coaches can help people who can’t find hope in life to discover hope.

- We help people discover more of who they are created to be and what they actually are capable of.

- We enable people to discover their core values, strengths and character.

- We support people who have a set goal in their mind yet don’t have action steps or confidence to get to their destination.

- We work with people in all of life’s hurts and pains from family and relationship struggles to job and career trials.

- We encourage people and empower people to move forward through adversity and to see the optimism behind that adversity.

- Sometimes we cannot see that when we get a ”No” there is something that is far beyond our understanding that is greater due to our limited scope and sight.

- We help people see the perspective that they may not know they have and offer ideas to change their perspective in other ways.

- Life coaches can work with executives, business people, sales people and any number of levels of professions to enable them higher goals and achievements in their own work place.

- Life coaches extend a hand to offer feedback and advice as they may see ways for people to find more peace, serenity and happiness in life.

Life Coaching is NOT therapy

Life coaches and counsellors may use many of the same approaches such as asking powerful questions, listening to the client deeply and finding patterns in peoples lives. To become a professional in life coaching or counselling you are required to take a certain amount of classes, pass the tests and have ”x” amount of supervised and non-surpervised hours of sessions to become certified. To become a counsellor you are required to go through 4-8 years of training to become certified however life coaches can become certified in 2-4 years. Life coaching is not therapy and it does not deal with people’s clinical issues, severe depression, deep past issues or people who are mentally unwell. There are very highly trained Counsellors that will be able to give you proper direction and support with these issues. A lot of counselling does deal with things that are blocking you in your past and they are trained to go deep in your past with various methods to help you become well in the present. The difference between what a life coach can offer you is that the clients we help are generally healthy in the present but they have a block that prevents them from excelling in the future. You might say that counselling is like archeology and life coaching is like architecture. Archeologist and Counsellors spend a lot of time digging up things from the past to help us get something better in the present. Life coaches and Architects spend a lot of time digging up ground in the present, planning, designing and building to help us get something better in the future.

“This Week’s Reflect and Apply”

Every one would benefit from being coached at some time in their life. It may be that you are in emotional or relationship despair. Perhaps your stuck or can’t seem to break unhealthy habits. Maybe your job has been too demanding and you don’t know if you should change careers. Maybe you want to find ways to set action steps to carry out your dreams and goals in life. This week I urge you to take a reflect on your life and think of one situation (or more) that you didn’t have good coaching but could really have used some good coaching and support to help guide you. Now I ask you this one question.

”What do you feel would be different in that situation if you had a life coach walking beside you?”

Pastor E.A. Adeboye

“A blessed life is a favored life”.

You become a channel of blessing when you connect to the immeasurable privileges of favor.

Favor singles you out for divine attention. It brings down the glory of the Lord over all that you lay your hands to do.

This is the time that God will remember you for favor.

God remembered Abraham amidst all his generation. He will remember you also in the name of Jesus

thou shall arise, and have mercy upon Zion

for the time to favor her: yea, the set time, is come Psalms 102:13

The Prerequisites To The Favor And Mercy Of God

The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.

It is the fear o f God that will prompt you to worship Him in spirit and truth and with true loyalty. This kind of fear is not slavish one.

It is what a regenerate child of the kingdom of God has which will grant him or her access to approach the throne of grace.

Scripture Reading

Romans 9:13-16, 2Cor 5:17, Heb 2:2-3

Prayer Points

Thank the Lord for keeping you alive to this moment

Praise God because his mercies endure forever.

Mighty God, have mercy upon me and forgive all my sins

Dear Lord, you are rich in mercy, show your lover to me today in the name of Jesus

Father, show me your favor in the name of Jesus

Oh Lord, let goodness and favour follow me in all that do in the name of Jesus

Yes, I do have a girl but most of you probably already knew that.

But while I get ready for the craft fair in November, I’m trying to anticipate what some of the folks might want. As you can imagine: baby, wedding, holidays, birthdays… at the top of the list.

So here is a little altered frame I created for a new baby girl. I had a blast creating this, imagining my little princess, oh so many years ago. (Wish you could see me making that puddin’ face with my lips stuck out. Sorry, no one here to photograph it right now. You’ll just have to imagine.)

The most delightful part was airbrushing the very subtle images on the bottom of the frame. I used Spellbinders™ Impressabilities® template to mask off parts of the frame and simply airbrushed over it with RV11 “Pink” Copic Sketch marker. Ooh, la, la!

I love the soft and elegant images. Now check out the top. I cut Spellbinders™ Lattice Borderability® out of pink vellum and airbrushed through the die template to get the pink swirls. Then I layered the two metal embellishments.

So, if anyone knows someone with a new baby girl…be sure to let them know about the craft fair…lol

Important Stuff: White Exclusives cardstock (Prism), PVA Glue (Lineco), S4-218 Lattice Borderabilities®, I2-1009 Flourish, Wizard™ (Spellbinders™), RV11 Pink Sketch Marker (Copic), Pink fibers (Kreinik), Glue Dots
Other Stuff: Pink striped ribbon, 4×6″ wood frame (Michael’s)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Eli

As a little girl, I, like most little girls played dress up. My dress up wardrobe was huge. It ranged from my mom’s old clothes and high heels(which were from the 70’s and REALLY cool), to different occupational outfits such as; a ballerina, princess, and doctor. There was an array of mom-made Halloween costumes such as a gypsy, Cinderella, Sheera the Warrior Princess, and Gem (that rock star chick from the early 90’s) among many others. But there was one outfit which I chose to wear on an almost everyday basis: My blue and white gingham dress with intricate hand sewn embroidery crafted by my mother, along with my red sparkly shoes, small wicker basket with a fake Toto inside. Yes, I truly wanted to be Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. I would spend my days imagining that I was, “no longer in Kansas any more,” and that my world was turned from black and white to full on Technicolor!

I look back on my childhood mindset… Complete bliss, with the exception of the occasional sibling rivalry or bruised knee. Life was about looking forward to the next water fight or shopping trip (in my case), and when I thought of my future, it seemed so far away yet it so incredible. I had no fear, no confidence issues, I was not afraid to speak up for my self and I had no clue what stage fright was. None of that ever had a power over me. Until 6th grade.

I was a victim of my own mind. I became self conscious, perhaps because I was 5′9 and taller than every boy in my school! But I allowed that confidence I had growing up to slip away and almost completely disintegrate. I know the lack of confidence was partly a maturity issue because my confidence did come back around enough to build a pretty great social life for my high school years but it had found a home in some tiny corner of my brain and was always lurking in the back of my mind. And this I feel, played a part in why I held myself back. I have always secret ambitions. I just never thought that I would be the girl who would have the dream career or dream job. So, I stayed in the safe zone. Despite my creativity desperate to get out it was worth it to me to stay where I was in order to stay comfortable.

Here I am today, 26 years old. In 24 days I will be 27. And I have embarked on a new chapter. A new season has begun. I have given notice to my current job as a nanny/personal assistant (which was so incredibly hard to do!) and I am venturing out into new waters. I am going to move towards my dreams, goals and ambitions. I have sooooo many. It is overwhelming at times. I was born to be an entrepreneur. I think of business ideas all day long. I am a dreamer. I always have been. It is time for to step outside of my comfort zone and into the boxing ring with my fears and insecurities. I am looking at myself in a new light. I am a strong woman. Capable, (with God’s help of course!) to actually do something about all these dreams of mine! I am on a mission to make them happen! One by one! I will no longer sit back and watch my life pass me by!

At 26, almost 27 years old, I am learning a lesson taught by myself: the little girl in the Dorothy dress. I am living my life in color now! I have awakened from my mundane sleep and I have my sparkly shoes on. I will live today, tomorrow and my future with the attitude to always flourish! flourish! flourish! It’s a process that can never stop.

*sniff, sniff*

Failure?

*sniiiiiifffffff!*

Howdy!

So, there were some setbacks, but (unlike last time), I didn’t delete the blog. Here’s what’s going on!

I went out and I bought my experiment food. The next morning, I looked in the mirror at my tongue, and (by golly!) I had a silly infection on it! I know this makes me a very attractive person! This made me not want to do a big silly dumb thing where I’m facing three or four monsters at the same time (a tongue monster is bad enough).

So, here’s the current situation!

I still want to lose about 20 pounds. If I want to lose weight and keep it off, I think I’m going to have to do more than eat ramen for a week.

I still have trouble sleeping. Things have gotten a little better, though. I’ve come to some new perspectives that get rid of some of those nasty ghosts that haunted me when I was trying to go to sleep at night. So I guess the “worry” part is fading, which was one of the major problems. Last night I couldn’t get to sleep until 4:00am, and I’m sitting in class right now (woke up at 7:00am. ugh). I know my problem is not waking up on days where I don’t have to wake up.

I don’t have a good reason (besides feeling like a trash bag on Tuesday and Saturday mornings).

Still, if I can find a “groove” for the mornings, this could be fixed nearly over night!

“Flourishing,” I think, was a matter of getting junk done for school and working on creative projects at home. I’ve been reading one of my books often(!). Still other creativity has been mute. This is a shame because I have bands to form and a painting to finish.

And fear(!). Fear is becoming more and more irrelevant. Deconstructing fear and stigmatism is easy to do, just as long as you have the right people to do it with. The group of people I gravitate toward now makes stuff like this easier just because it’s stuff I can talk about openly and not feel like I have to stuff it in a bag. I’m trying to find a new job. Then I can do all sorts of stuff that scares me.

And carving my name into reality’s flesh comes after I become a super-powered hyper-Brett (with a hyper-beam).

All in due time.

You always make me smile.

What in the Wide World is Life Coaching?

It was September 2006 and I had just begun a relationship with my now wife. I met her in Toronto at a wedding and we were courting long distance as I lived in Saskatoon Canada. One day as we were talking over the phone my wife Nicole told me something that confused me and caught my attention at the same time. She said “Scott you would be a terrific Life Coach.” I thought about what she said and it really didn’t make sense. I mean I had heard of the concept of coaching in sports but a life coach… What in the Wide World is Life Coaching? Nicole had my attention. She gave me some examples of coaching and she told me about one of her friend in Toronto who was a life coach. I had met Nicole’s friend a week before this conversation. I even remember thinking “Wow, she has a positive spirit and inspiration in her voice.” So there I was wondering and searching for more information. I asked “What is life coaching and is it for me?” I was never so inspired and motivated by a potential career than I was about life coaching. I saw the opportunity to walk along people on their journey in life as I supported and guided them through whatever they were in the midst of.

As a coach I identify the goals and dreams that my clients have. Create action steps for them to accomplish those goals and dreams. Then help them sense the realization that they really can become who they want to become and see who they want to be. It will then give them hope that they can accomplish there goals and dreams. Then I will support them in the process of achieving those goals and seeing them through to accomplish those goals.

So here I am today on my journey as a life coach. I know a lot more now Life Coaching and I will give you some of my thoughts. Life coaches help people flourish as individuals by offering them tools, guidance and support. Life coaches have training and the ability to enable people that are stuck to become unstuck. We can help people that are just existing and unfulfilled in life to become individuals that thriving with optimism and fulfillment in life. Life coaches draw out their clients own gifts and abilities to help them progress in life. I personally love this one because it’s my wife’s favorite description of life coaching. A life coach helps people ignite their dreams and support their journey so they can live out their destiny.

Let me give an example about life coaching that is applicable. If you were an author, the life coach would be the editor that would help you get your book published. The editor would be guiding the progress of the book yet they wouldn’t be writing the book. The author would have the creativity and abilities in themselves to write the book. The editor or life coach in this analogy would help direct the author and they would have additional tools to progress the book to publication.

I feel that as a life coach I need to have deep listening skills. Under the guidance of your coach you may very well be in the only situation that someone is deeply listening to you without any bias or opinion. It is in this environment that you can truly be heard for who you are and what you’re going through.

Now life coaching as an art cannot be described in a few short sentences. In the same way counselors, physicians, musicians and other professionals art cannot be describe in short. There are various strategies that are approached with each client. Each person is going through individual challenges and situations in their lives. Everyone has different questions and they’re searching for different things in any given session.

I hope that these examples have inspired you to want know more about life coaching.
