If you’ve been playing around with the SproutCore framework for a bit, you know doubt have come across a line of code that may look something like this:

properties = 'fname lname age address'.w()

The string of words is converted into an array of words using the method w(). Pretty handy. JavaScript, being dynamic and all, allows you to modify an object at runtime. So the SproutCore framework takes advantage of this fact and adds the w() method to JavaScript’s string object.

In a quest to make things easier for you when building a web application, SproutCore also adds other additional handy methods to the string method. One in particular is the fmt() method.

If you’ve ever coded in C or C++, you probably remember printf or sprintf where you formatted a string doing something like the following:

printf( "Stan was born in %i and is %i years old", 1960, 49 );

The function makes it handy to create a string without you having to explicitly concatenate all the characters together and do the necessary conversions. The fmt() method is basically like printf but simpler. Let’s say we create a typical JavaScript string with variables the old fashion way like so:

var beverage = 'White Russian';
var state = 'abides';

var str = 'The Dude ' + state + ' and loves to drink a ' + beverage';

The approach to creating the concatenated string works, but its tedious having to write and may not be as obvious what the final result should be. So using SproutCore we instead do the following:

var str = 'The Dude %@ and loves to drink a %@'.fmt(state, beverage);

Kind of like printf but simpler. In the statement above you’ll notice the %@. %@ is a placeholder in the string to include an argument given to fmt. If order matters you can also append a number to %@, such as in the following:

var str = 'The Dude loves to drink a %@2 and always %@1'.fmt(state, beverage);

Really simple. Now that you have this handy tool in your belt, go ahead and give it a try. Once I figured out about the fmt() method, I started to use it on a more frequent basis to make my life a little bit easier.

In a sign of the BBC’s attitude to blogs, the corporation has appointed a blogger-in-residence.

Internet executive Steve Bowbrick will be blogging for BBC Future Media & Technology for six months.

What is interesting about Bowbrick’s appointment is that he is an outsider, or as he puts it: “I realise I’ve made it to 45 years old without ever working at the BBC, and it’s genuinely exciting.”

His brief is to work on ideas for a common and open technology platform. The questions at the BBC is how open can the corporation be, what should it share with outsiders and should it be be opening our banks of content and code to licence fee payers, entrepreneurs and organisations?

And for the BBC, these questions are given an extra urgency by the context: by the chaotic decline of commercial broadcast TV, by Ofcom’s apparently unending review of public service media, by the troubled birth of the Kangaroo JV and even by Channel 4’s bid for the social media high ground with 4iP.

The issue is part of a wider debate on the role of the BBC in the UK’s media landscape.  As a public-funded organisation, it enjoys a privileged position.  Looking at ways of sharing its technology is one way of countering accusations that it is seeking to dominate the world of new media.

Opções mais comuns:
-t
Identa a primeira linha diferente da segunda.

-u
Deixa uniforme os espaços entre as palavras, um para palavras e dois para senteças.

-w
Especifica um tamanho maximo para as colunas de um arquivo, o padrão é 75.

Exemplo:

fmt -tuw60 arquivo.txt | grep cirolini | cat >> arquivo_novo.txt

Formada o arquivo com identação entre a primeira e a segunda linha, deixando o espaço entre as palavras uniforme, e ainda deixando com o maximo de 60 colunas. O comando grep filtra pelas palavras cirolini no arquivo, e através do cat adiciona a saida para o arquivo_novo.txt

Fremont General Corporation (NYSE: FMT) has received a regulatory letter from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, of the FDIC, with an order to recapitalize itself.

Fremont does business primarily through its wholly-owned bank subsidiary, Fremont Investment & Loan.  The letter was concurrence  with the California Department of Financial Institutions issuance of a Supervisory Prompt Corrective Action Directive to the bank operation.  Fremont General and Fremont General Credit Corporation, have also been advised.

The Directive requires the bank, the company, and its credit arm to take one or more of the following actions to recapitalize the Bank by May 26, 2008:

• Sell enough voting shares or obligations to be "adequately capitalized" under FDIC regulations.
• Accept an offer for the bank to be acquired by another depository institution, or combine with another insured depository institution.
• Fremont General and Fremont’s credit unit shall divest themselves of the Bank.

The FDIC has deemed the bank as undercapitalized and this will limit and restrict certain business operations of the bank.  This directive will require that for many of the normal operations to resume it must be adequately capitalized for four straight quarters unless he FDIC lifts the directive.

On February 28, 2008, Fremont and its Bank hired Credit Suisse and Sandler O’Neill as advisors to develop and implement strategic initiatives in an attempt to raise additional capital and/or to sell the bank.

Fremont shares surged on Monday and have traded above $0.60 since with a $0.61 close on Thursday.  Shares are indicated down at $0.54 this morning.  The 52-week high was $13.80 and from 2004 to 2006 this traded between $20 and $30 for much of the time.  Help or no help, this one’s uglier than 40 miles of bad road.
