Első major albumuk, a “From Under the Cork Tree” már hatalmas népszerűséget hozott a zenekarnak, akik ezzel az anyaggal dupla platinalemezhez juttatták saját magukat, és újabb örökérvényű dalokkal ajándékoztak meg minket, köztük a “Dance, Dance” és a “Sugar We’re Going Down” című gyöngyszemekkel.
A lemez kijött deluxe verzióban is, ezen helyet kapott az összes videoklipük, valamint az a 3 új dal is, mely a sima CD változaton is megtalálható, a “From now on We Are Enemies“, a “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out” és az “Alpha Dog“.

It was a brisk morning and the mercury was holding steady about 26 degrees. We ate a hot breakfast and prepared for the next leg of our trip. We met up with our US escort to finalize the details. The route clearance guys (IED hunters) would go in front of us and actively search for IEDs implanted in the culverts and along the road. As fast as the IED

Road leading to district center.

hunters dispose of the IEDs, the insurgents wait until they pass and reseed the road with these lethal home-made bombs composed of two types of fertilizer and diesel fuel. The fertilizer is cheaper than a bag of flour and is abundant in country and available anywhere for resale.

We aligned the convoy and picked up additional ANA troops and vehicles

We got ourselves a convoy!

along with some commercial trucks transporting food and drink supplies for the troops at the Charkh District Center. In all, we had over 30 vehicles in our convoy. As we traveled down the dusty dirt road, our gunners were given an opportunity to fire the crew serve weapons at the mountain side to ensure the machine guns were functioning properly. My gunner who is an AF SSgt enjoyed this part of the trip.

Village children by their house door.

The terrain was barren and desert like, but the IED craters in the road were a reminder that the enemy was somewhere in the vicinity and didn’t want us traveling to their town. We turned off the dirt road on to an asphalt one that would lead us directly into the village center. I was surprised to see the abundance of the trees and orchards that paralleled this road. The village children came out of their houses to watch as our armed convoy passed by. One small boy had a wood switch in his hand and used his other hand motioning for us to get out. It was as though he wanted to whip us with his stick! Look at the picture to see the seriousness on his face, it was unforgettable and made us chuckle at

the time.

As we approached the combat outpost, the road turned into talcum powder like sand. This caused the tires to spin, thus creating dust clouds making visibility difficult. I tried to capture this with my camera, but there was so much dust, you can’t see the vehicle in front of us. We arrived safely at the camp and set up our gear in a nearby tent. While eating our MREs, we heard a torrent of machine gun fire. We were certain there was a shooting range nearby and they were practicing their marksmanship. This was not the case. Our escorts departed the FOB and drove about 1 kilometer and they were attacked by small-arms fire. One of the US gunners was injured by shrapnel and after the fire fight was sent to the medical clinic at FOB Shank an hour’s drive away. I was informed the soldier is going to be fine.

It was obvious our presence wasn’t welcome. This was the first time, the FOB had attempted a VMO and HA distribution since being set up earlier in the year. But this wasn’t going to discourage us, so we walked next door to the VMO site. It was a 2-story modern looking school. An Army LT explained that the insurgents previously

While the team was preparing the site, I ventured down to the entry control point to take some pictures. There were several boys perched on top of the mud-brick wall motioning for my attention. I walked over to them along with my interpreter Omid. The boys were demanding “rawdios” and callum (radios and pens). The radios are one of the most popular items we hand out, because it has a manual crank and doesn’t require electricity. I didn’t have any radios or pens to hand out. But I saw this as an opportunity to create some dialogue. I inquired whether they liked Americans or not. The oldest teenager responded and my interpreter was hesitant to translate. I insisted he translate word for word. The translation was “I hate Americans”. At first I was a bit disgruntled and thought to myself, “You hate Americans, but you want our HA and medicines we give out”. Instead, I told him, that I respect your opinion and wanted to know more. Here is a generalization of our conversation:

Me: Why do you hate Americans?

Boy: Because you are a non-believer.

Me: (Recalling my conversation with ANA mullah) I am not a non-believer, I just have a

different book than you do. (Referring to the Bible for Christians and the Koran for Muslims)

Boy: It doesn’t matter; I am supposed to hate Americans.

Me: Why do you say that?

Boy: Because the village mullah teaches us this way. (In the interim, another younger boy interjects)

Young Boy: (Talking to older boy) Don’t tell him that because he won’t give us a radio or a pen.

Me: Come here tomorrow when we are open and I will give you a radio and other HA.

The VMO/HA site was set up and the doors were secured. Afterward, I joined in a friendly game of volleyball with the ANA and ANP. Despite being 44 and 7/8 years old, I was still able to block their spikes and hold my own. Meanwhile my teammates went to eat and after volleyball I would do the same.

After chow, I was in the small computer and phone center. Suddenly the windows rattled and a large explosion was heard. An Army Specialist came running inside and yelled for everyone to leave and grab their gear because we were under attack. I was in a bit of a pickle because my body armor, helmet, and my M-4 rifle were secured in the tent. To get to the tent, I would have to pass by the Entry Control Point (ECP) where all the action was taking place. Instead, I decided to take cover in the small concrete wall room along with two of my interpreters. I was still armed with my M-9 pistol, so if an ambush would take place, I could still defend myself at a very short range. The insurgents were using air burst Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) to try and take out the guard towers and the ECP. The soldiers on duty opened up with a deafening reverberation of 50 caliber machine guns. There were several large booms. Admittedly, I was a bit scared and so were my interpreters as they hunched down low and took cover under a wood platform supporting a computer. It was like everything was in slow motion. The attack only lasted for 10-15 minutes, but it was agonizing. So many thoughts flashed through my head. My biggest worry was an errant RPG because they are inaccurate and unpredictable. I thought about my lovely wife Liisa and about our future vacation plans in a few weeks. I pulled out my gold cross she gave me and said a small prayer. Then just as quickly as it happened the gunfire was silent and we waited another 15 minutes until an all clear was given. Unknown to me at the time, my teammates were huddled in a bunker wearing all of their body armor.

Afterwards the Army soldiers were yelling “Hooah” and talking about the attack and previous attacks. I recall one soldier bragging about #67. It had been several weeks since they last attacked and it was obvious this one was meant for us and to instill fear in the villagers and discourage them from coming out to the VMO site.

We returned to our tent and I looked at the various expressions on my teammate’s faces. I’m sure several of them experienced the same thing I did, but probably won’t admit it. We settled down for the night and lit the wood burning stove. This proved to be quite a chore since we didn’t have kindling and resorted to dipping the large wood chunks into diesel fuel. The stove was too small to heat the large tent and the 2 foot flames being emitted from the flu might possibly catch the tent on fire. The Army 1st Sgt managed to find a diesel fuel connector but the amount of heat it provided was dismal at best. You had to be 6 inches from the stove to feel the heat. It was freezing outside and not much better in our tent. It was going to be a cold night.

The National Parole Board decided Wednesday to revoke Roland Chin’s statutory release, a move

The National Parole Board decided Wednesday to revoke Roland Chin’s statutory release, a move that will keep him in Bowden Institution until at least February or March next year.

The ruling basically affirms an earlier decision to suspend Chin’s release in August, when Calgary police arrested him for violating conditions banning him from carrying a cellphone and forbidding him from associating with gang members.

Chin, who will be 26 in December, is serving a 32-month sentence for drug and weapons offences. The conviction stems from a 2006 police raid on a Calgary hotel room, where investigators found Roland and his brother Roger with crack cocaine, a loaded handgun and cash.

Statutory release is mandated by law at the two-thirds mark of an offender’s sentence, meaning Chin will likely have another shot despite his inability to fly straight during his failed five-week stint last summer. No word yet on whether authorities will try to keep Chin behind bars until his sentence expires next June — a relatively rare tactic reserved mainly for untreated sex offenders.

Having said that, the Correctional Service of Canada recently succeeded in its bid to detain FOB member Truong Nguyen until his three-year sentence expires in January 2011. Nguyen, 26, was imprisoned for opening fire on rival gang members outside Calgary’s Pacific Place mall in 2006.

At Nguyen’s trial, Roger Chin testified that it was he — not Nguyen — who fired the shots. The trial judge didn’t believe Roger’s testimony and he never faced any charges in connection with the shootout. Freedom wasn’t kind to Roger, however: he was severely wounded in a shooting at a northeast Calgary gas station in Feb. 2008. Five months later, he was shot and killed as he drove alone along Centre Street North.

Roland survived his five weeks of freedom unscathed, but the account he gave during his parole hearing certainly takes some of the glamour out of gang life: he constantly worried enemies were following him while driving and he often wore a bulletproof vest when he ventured outside his father’s home — not that he felt safe there, either. He told the parole board he became paranoid after a gas company employee came to the door asking to read the meter.

Roland continues to deny he’s a gang member, but he admitted his associations have made his life a dangerous one.

“I’m getting too old for this,” he told the parole board.

He’s not kidding: police say the average age for gang members to be killed in Calgary is 20.

AND IN CASE YOU HAVEN’T HEARD: It’s been awhile since I’ve updated this blog, so it’s also worth mentioning that police in Lethbridge arrested Nicholas Rodrigo Hovanesian — who was wanted in connection with the triple homicide at the Bolsa Restaurant on New Year’s Day — in October, after several months at large. A beat officer arrested Hovanesian for allegedly threatening staff at a local bar and then recognized his face from a police bulletin.

Federal Police Instructor This week we continued with the training of the Federal Police, and it req

Federal Police Instructor

This week we continued with the training of the Federal Police, and it required us to make a expedition to another FOB. This one is occupied and run strictly by the Iraqis. It is called JSS Babil, and was once a private nightclub for Saddam and his associates. It was converted into a command post after the invasion, and then was a joint operations center until just before my team and I arrived. Now it is entirely Iraqi, and the CF units only post a platoon here in order to demonstrate some level of “partnership” with our FP brothers. Since we have moved out and given it over to the ISF, the quality of the living conditions has fallen off the cliff.

Dishdasha

This place is absolutely horrid, the polar opposite of where we are living now. The accommodations consist of a ratty tent, known as a GP Large, with no sides and a desperately sagging roof. The ground is covered with a slapdash assortment of gravel and moon dust. Since most Iraqis don’t know or care about sanitation, there are an overabundance of flies, so unless you bring a mosquito net, be prepared to have these flying vermin swarming all over you during the day. Also, in view of the fact that we are located literally on the banks of the Tigris, at night the flies are replaced by the mosquitoes. This wouldn’t be too bad, except that no repellent known to man has been found to be effective against them. If you don’t stay covered up all night you will be eaten alive.

<WARNING!! What follows will be very graphic.>

The toilet facilities are a vile farce, even by Middle Eastern standards. Eastern toilets are nothing like what you are accustomed to. They consist of what equates to a hole in the floor. In order to do your business, you must squat over the opening. Once you are done, the real adventure begins! Look around for some paper, and you will find none. What you will find is a spigot and a jug, usually a watering can with a long spout. This is used to saturate your nether regions with water, while with you left hand you cleanse the dirty bits. This is not a joke; it is exactly how they do it here. Since there is an abundance of water and feces in these WC’s, there is also an abundance of flies. There is nothing quite as disgustingly creepy as feeling the flies crawling on your undercarriage and lining up for a buffet at the Balloon Knot Café all while you are doing the Haji Squat over a ceramic bowl. However, the FP are living in extremely deplorable conditions. Most homes here have porcelain tiled bathrooms to help keep things clean. There is no such luxury here. Just a china bowl in the concrete; at least there is no chance of slipping on the wet floor!

Thankfully I am only here for four days. These poor guys have to live here for weeks at a time. They usually are assigned to duty on one of dozens of checkpoints where they will stay for about two weeks. The usual shift is six hours on and eight hours off. Life on the checkpoint is sometimes even worse than here on the JSS! But after a few weeks of this, they get a few days off, or jaza. They usually go home, especially if it is a payday.

On payday, each shurta receives his salary in cash, minus what he owes to pay for his share of the food, and anything extorted by his officers. The rest he takes back home to give to his family so they can eat, pay the mortgage, buy fuel, or whatever other expenses they have. Banks are not very commonly used in this part of the world, at least not by the average person. Banks are viewed as the domain of the wealthy, and for businesses. Cash is the medium of exchange here, and it is either Dollars or Dinars. Few places will take credit cards, but everyone accepts cash.

When I was here in 2003, everyone was still using the Old Dinars, with pictures of Saddam Hussein on all the bills. This was all they had, and it took almost two years to approve a new design for the money. When I returned in 2005, the new money was everywhere, but people still preferred to use US money. Today, the New Iraqi Dinar is everywhere. You can still use dollars to purchase goods and services, but people have confidence in their national currency.

We have a good relationship with the FP, and get along well with them. I will hang out in their barracks after training and watch TV and enjoy the

nargilah. They absolutely love television, especially the dance channels. This is like the Arab version of American Bandstand or Soul Train, except there is no Don Cornelius or Dick Clark. It is just Middle Eastern music with about a dozen girls dancing. This is all there is to it. So we sit around, smoking the hookah, and watching this show, and talking about family and politics, and whatever else happens to come up.

Considering how little they get paid and the conditions they have to put up with, I am constantly

impressed by the FP’s we train. They show up motivated, eager to learn. They want to demonstrate that they are proficient in their chosen profession. They ask questions, take notes, and break all the common misconceptions most soldiers have about Iraqis. They still have a long, long way to go before they are even close to being as competent as we are, but they are on the right path.

Letra Original: Aqui

Letra Traduzida Abaixo:

Deixe as folhas caírem no verão.
E deixe o Brilho de Dezembro sentir as chamas.

Me envolva e deixe-se levar.
Recomece novamente no México

Você disse: Eu não me importo (Eu não me importo)
Eu não me importo
Eu não me importo, você disse,
Eu não me importo.

Say my name, and his in the same breath, I

Dare you to say they taste the same,

Let the leaves fall off in the summer

And let December glow feel flames

Brace myself and let go,

Start it over again in Mexico

These friends, they don’t love you

They just love the hotel suites, now

I don’t care what you think

As long as it’s about me

Oh, take a chance, let your body get a tolerance,

Sweat it out, shut your mouth,

Free love on the streets, but

I’ve been on multiple missions these past few days and have fallen behind with my writing and pictures. My Internet connection has been spotty and today the server went down. Friday for the most part we had off and I spent most of my time cleaning and organizing my room, doing laundry, and resting. These missions can really drain your energy and my room looked like a hurricane came through it. But now I have managed to restore order to my space and my Internet connectivity is cooperating a little bit better.

Yesterday after mentoring our ANA counterparts, we spent the afternoon inspecting our MRAPs. We went over each vehicle with a fine tooth comb and identified all of the minor and major deficiencies we could locate. The Marines were not gentle with these vehicles and they have some problems that need to be fixed. I suppose in the areas where they traveled, a speedometer was not required. But personally I like to monitor my speed when traveling on the highways. I also wouldn’t mind if the horn was functional and reattached.

Preying Mantis on teammate's ear.

After inspecting the MRAPs, we also inspected our armored HMMVWs and prepared them for tomorrow’s mission. We are supposed to go visit a remote guard tower and if our teammate can’t get on the helicopter, we will drive him to the airport. While inspecting the vehicles, one of my teammate’s found a Praying Mantis and it crawled up his arm and attached itself to his ear. I also took a picture of one of the mountain peaks overlooking our FOB.

An old vid of mine from 2007… So this is me, reminiscing a great weekend. What could be better than skipping class, flying to Manila for a FOB concert, and celebrating my 20th birthday with awesome friends? Yep, nothing…

Oh well maybe seeing my friends getting wayyyy drunk for my 21st and 22nd birthdays. Blackouts anyone? It’s easy to laugh when you’re either sober or can’t remember the “things best left forgotten” (a la The Hangover).

It was another cool morning and our 72-hour assault packs were packed. I was still feeling a little

It was another cool morning and our 72-hour assault packs were packed. I was still feeling a little bit sore from yesterday’s mission. I swear the Captain hits the bumps fast to see if I will hit the ceiling or pop the gunner out of the turret. Anyhow, we went over to the Landing Zone (LZ) to wait for our inbound helicopter. Off in the distance, some of the mountain peaks displayed a light dusting of snow. Winter is quickly approaching and government officials are worried that it might interfere with the election run-off on November 7.

Today we were going to escort the ANA colonel along with his two body guards to a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Logar Province. He wanted to inspect the troops and visit the Forward Logistics Element (FLE…pronounced flea). We watched as a helicopter circled around the mountains and then landed at the LZ. The helo blades create such a wind storm causing the temperature of the cold air to drop 10-15 degrees. We were rather surprised when the crewman informed us this wasn’t our helicopter and ours was canceled. Although the flight was canceled for a particular airframe, we were certain they would substitute another helicopter in its place.

Our helicopter eventually arrived and our ETT Team Leader, AF Captain, and I along with our ANA guests boarded the aircraft. Our plan was to make a quick assessment of the FLE and meet with key leaders at the FOB. The helicopter flew through parts of Wardak and then Logar Province before landing at FOB Shank. Due to the sporadic rain, it was difficult to take pictures of the villages we flew over. Similar to the other provinces I’ve visited; most of the houses are constructed out of mud-brick and protected by thick walls. Some of the villages seemed so isolated it’s hard to understand how they survive, especially with winter rapidly approaching.

Our party was met by one of our teammates and some of the FOB leadership. We departed by truck and traveled to the ANA side more commonly known as Mai-Wand. Three of my ETT teammates are housed in the same complex as the ANA soldiers they mentor. We toured the FLE facilities and then the ANA Colonel held an open ranks inspection of his troops. Afterwards we discussed some business and then went to lunch at the Jordanian chow hall. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and the cleanliness of the place.

We were only on the ground for a few hours and were scheduled to depart. It started to rain and I thought our flight would be delayed. But the clouds cleared up enough and we left FOB Shank with a direct flight to our camp. On the return trip I was able to take a picture of a more populated village. This village had dirt roads leading away from it unlike some of the isolated villages I observed earlier. After we landed I looked at the mountain peaks and all of the snow I seen early in the morning had melted and disappeared.

Last night a spectacular Gala Dinner took place at the Sheraton in Sopot, Polans. Two specific actors were recognised for their efforts in sustainability in Poland. The Responsible Business Forum in Poland (FOB) has together with the international sustainability award- Globe Award, done a national search for great sustainability cases in Poland.

Danone Poland was recognised for their innovative project carbon footprint.

The jury chair Mirella Panek Owsianska says in the motivation: “The project is comprehensive due to the fact that the actions taken allow monitoring and reduction of carbon emission throughout the production process. In this context, the improvement of cooperation in the supply chain should be particularly appreciated.”

The Polish city Stargard Szczeciński was recognised for pursuing the city’s development strategy consistently and diligently. The city had very difficult conditions when it started its actions, but nevertheless, projects to revitalize the area were undertaken.

The jury also appriciated the consciously building in social integration into the realized projects.

ok, so i myself personally do not know what to think of when i think about this…?

i mean, its great to be proud of your heritage and your race but theres that point where you think someone has just gone too far…? idk theres a problem with british born chinese and ‘fobbyness’. what you see on the internet really does make you think ‘wow. theyre so cool +_+ their fashion music everything….’

http://photos-h.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v288/40/12/621630719/n621630719_3083543_4801.jpg

but u noe don’t you remember these days?

http://sweetrequiem.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/tae_min_6.jpg

and ‘fobby clothes’ its just the fashion in that area. you think ‘ah to have fobby clothes they all have to be oversized etc.’ but, tbh thats because all the shops that sell stuff for like $40 HKD are a ‘one size for all’ shop. its to limit their costs etc. and u noe, i have to say its the west that usually influences the east. this might sound like im saying ‘asians copy westerners’ but you know, there is obviously that influence. west uses all this electro stuff, asian pop uses all this autotune? crap.

so onto the real problem thats slightly bugging me. its like….you know how you think you know someone but then they change just like that. thats what X did. i met her during chinese school and when she went into secondary school, thats when she started to change. idk what it was, maybe its because she goes to a public school and u noe ‘chavy’ stuff happens but idk.

suddenly, everyone is obsessed with asian stuff though. or everyone is obsessed with ‘fobbyness’. more and more people are watching doramas and more and more are listening to the generic pop that comes out from the korean companies atm. theres also another trend i have noticed, X goes off to china town literally every week and wht does she do? ah so this is what she does, she goes to the ‘photobooths’ *insert fake surprise face here* now i find this ridiculous. you pay to get into those machines, and all you do is pose with your friends i mean….like once a year or smth fine but if u do it every week its stupid because… u can ‘cam whore’ for free like at ur house or anything. now u may say, ‘ah photobooths are great tho, u can edit stuff onto them and stick the photos on your phone as stickers :O’ but X goes to the cheapest photobooth, and all you can do is take pictures with a white background. oh. so. gay.

what else….ah the random kinda neccessity to say a chinese word in every sentence. or literally say the whole sentence in chinese. its piss worthy. its gay.

sigh
