Clearly, strategic planning is no panacea. Strategic planning is simply a set of concepts, procedures, and tools designed to help leaders, managers, and planners think and act strategically. Used in wise and skillful ways by a “coalition of the willing,” strategic planning can help organizations focus on producing effective decisions and actions that further the organization’s mission, meet in mandates, and satisfy key stakeholders. But strategic planning is not a substitute for strategic thinking and acting. Only caring and committed people can do that. And when used thoughtlessly, strategic planning can actually drive out precisely the kind of strategic thought and action it is supposed to promote.

Furthermore, strategic planning is not a substitute for leadership. There is simply no substitute for leadership when it comes to using strategic planning to enhance organizational performance. At least some key decision makers and process champions must be committed to the strategic planning process, or any attempts to use it are bound to fail.

In addition, strategic planning is not synonymous with creating an organizational strategy. Organizational strategies have numerous sources, both planned and unplanned. Strategic planning is likely to result in statement of organizational intentions, but what is realized in practice will be some combination of what is intended and what emerges along the way. Strategic planning can help organizations develop and implement effective strategies, but they should also remain open to unforeseen opportunities. Too much attention to strategic planning and excessive reverence for strategic plans can build organizations to other unplanned and unexpected—yet incredibly useful—sources of information, insight, and action.

The discipline necessary for strategic planning can be of two sorts. The first harkens back to Latin root of the word “discipline,” emphasizing instruction, training, education, and learning. The second embodies later interpretations of the word, emphasizing order, control, and punishment. Emphasis should be placed on education and learning, although there clearly are occasions when imposing order, taking control, and enforcing appropriate sanctions are appropriate. Certainly, key leaders, managers, and planners can best use strategic planning as an educational and learning tool, to help them figure out what is really important and what should be done about it. Sometimes this means following a particular sequence of steps and preparing formal strategic plans, but not necessarily. The ultimate goal of strategic planning should not be a rigid adherence to a particular process or an instance on the production of plans. Instead, strategic planning should promote wise strategic thought and action on behalf of an organization and its key stakeholders. What steps to follow, in what sequence, and whether or not to prepare formal plans are subsidiary concerns.

When starting a new venture it can be difficult to keep track of the millions of things that need done.

If you’re anything like me then you probably write some things down on paper, or even in a notebook.  Then forget were you even wrote it? However this method of organisation is inherently flawed.  It is, in my opinion, the best method of generating ideas or brainstorming, whereby the best ideas can be easily highlighted and the worst scribbled out!  But pieces of paper and notebooks can easily become forgotten or flawed or even left behind at a time when you need it most.  So ideas ideally need transferring to a more flexible medium, this is one of my favorite tools, Ta-da Lists.

By it’s own admission Ta-da lists is the easiest to-do list tool available online.  It’s free to sign-up and only takes 10 seconds to get going.  You can create tons of lists for everything you need (see a selection of random lists) and once you are complete with an item you just simply “check” it off!

Sharing lists amongst your people and other colleagues is also as easy as A-B-C.  And retrieving the list from anywhere is also just as easy with a wide range of browser support.

With a free and simple process it will do you justice to take a look.  Besides what do you have to loose? Except for that paper that you wrote your great Idea on, where is that thing again….lol!

Project “End 2009 with a bang”

Week 1 (of 6)

I received a comment from Shae Bynes, the author of the article that inspired this project, about my original post. Part of the comment made me question the number of goals I was focusing on:

You have a LOT of things written down here to accomplish by end of the year. I don’t know how much of this is NEW activity/habits vs. continuing what you’re already doing (e.g. the personal finance, service, health items) but it seems like a lot of new habits and stuff to focus on in a mere 6 weeks.

I re-thought my list and I think Shae’s comment about trying to do too much in a short period of time is true in this case. So, I decided to cut back on the number of goals I will work on the rest of this year. Here is the new list of goals I have for the last 5 weeks of the year.

• Health – lose 15 pounds
• Family & Friends – Finally send thank you cards to everyone who attended my birthday party in April (I know – it’s horrible)
• Relationship with God – attend church every Sunday for the rest of the year

I actually went to church this past Sunday!!! It was a great day to return, the church just had a Men’s Encounter. It was encouraging hearing the testimony of so many men who took a few days out of their life to have an encounter with God.

Make this daythe day where you just start to become worry-free.

Sounds easy? Yeah, right?

Pick the worst thing going on with you.  Whatever it is, work out a simple solution.  Identify an action to be taken.  Even doing nothing about it can be seen as a form of action.  Decide what you will do and do it, then get on with living.  Life is cluttered with the things thatwe pile on top of whatwe need to do.  Worry isn’t on the list.  In fact, Jesus said it shouldn’t be on our to-do list as Christians.  He told us that it adds nothing to our day, except worry.  We should focus on the pursuit of the kingdom of God.  Relieve yourself of the worry and purue the kingdom.

In talking with many of our customers, I’m often amazed by the number of good folks in the “MAGIC Kingdom” who still don’t fully realize what a significant shift in technology the MEDITECH Advanced Technology now shipping in (parts of) Client/Server version 6.x represents.  Some have even been led to believe 6.x is just another run-of-the-mill ring release that you migrate to after C/S 5.6.  I’ve spoken with a few beta sites and early adopters who might beg to differ.  For the sake of this post however, let’s concentrate on the new MEDITECH Advanced Database (MAD).  I want to highlight a few of the differences between the MAD and its predecessor (NPR) and since there is much to say on this topic, I’m going to break this into parts I and II.  In part I, we’ll look at the structure and design of the new database.

For starters, whereas the MAGIC/NPR database was termed “hierarchical,” the new Advanced Database is best described as “chronological” or “append-only,” which (in English) means that nothing is ever overwritten or deleted from it.  Most databases think in terms of add, insert or delete.  With MAD, you really just add.  There’s a slogan in there somewhere.    In order to illustrate how the MAD stores data, consider the following screenshot:

The highlighted section in the top half of the structure represents an initial entry in the MIS Directions Dictionary, where the facility of LAB has been created along with three corresponding applications, .DFT, LAB and PCS.  The lower un-highlighted section represents records that were later added due to an edit of the .DFT application and its schedule.  The advantage to this type of data storage is that it produces the mother-of-all audit trails.  A record of every addition, edit and deletion is stored, complete with the initials of the user responsible for each entry. The downside would seem to be the size of the database and how much larger it could potentially grow as more edits and deletions are made.  By the way… if you’re a old MAGIC programmer, you’ve probably realized you can still feel your way around a structure like this.

Keep in mind, when a program reads data from a chronological database, it has to essentially parse through the entire structure, so as more edits are made over time and the structure grows, you could pay a performance penalty.  At the same time, MEDITECH has implemented several tricks and techniques to make the reading of this type of file more efficient than it would appear to be at first glance.  In fact, MEDITECH has a special service program called ANP that has been highly optimized for reading from and writing to the MAD and it’s the ONLY program that is allowed to do so.  As a final word on performance, it’s safe to say your mileage may vary by application because some apps are more edit-intensive than others.

I hope this has provided you with a basic introduction to the new database structure and how it stores data as compared with its predecessor, NPR.  In part II, we’ll look at some other differences between the two database technologies.  As always, your comments and questions are welcome.  In addition, if you would like to see some other aspects of the Advanced Technology covered in future posts, please let us know.

I wasn’t the first nigga to bring a platinum plaque back to the projects, but I’m sure I was the first nigga to flip cam Dick Clark’s award show. When doing any business plan or yearly review, we look at our strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT). Looking at our weaknesses, we often think about fixing them. But is this the right thing to do?

Good vs. Bad

All weaknesses are not built equal. Of course there are some that need to be fixed in order to run the business. For example if you don’t have a sales channel and this prevents you from growing the business, then you need to find a solution. But sometimes you have weaknesses that don’t really hurt the business (at least materially); for example a so-so customer support center. It could be better but you still manage and the business is successful.

When is it time to fix a weakness?

In order to answer this, I have two simple questions I ask myself:

• Can we continue to grow and be successful even with this weakness?
• Will fixing this weakness divert my attention from some of my strengths?

If the answer to these questions is YES, then I don’t look into fixing that weakness. If you still are determined to fix your weaknesses, you might create one of the biggest mistake in leveling all your strengths and weaknesses; losing at the same time any competitive differentiation you might have had.

Making your strength even stronger

One way to compensate for on-going weaknesses is to make your strength even stronger. Most of the time, it is easier to improve on what’s good than to fix things that don’t work. Having said that, I must admit that even myself struggle with this as I have a tendency to not only improves things but to fix the weaknesses. It’s a natural reaction but you need to pick your battles, to stay focused on what works.

Building the top 3

Another trick I have is to list all the key challenges that the company has. Priority is determined by the impact that this challenge has on your business as well as how much this problems troubles you (what keeps you awake at night). Of course, you need to make sure you are focusing on the right problems but if you do this exercise well, you will see how far (or how important) a given weakness needs to be fixed. If it’s not even remotely close to your top 3, then don’t even spend an additional minute on it …

In short, get stronger where you can, only fix the weaknesses that matter and yes, stay FOCUSED.
