Etter en vellykket festmiddag og påfølgende musikk fremført av ”Sviskeprinsene”, var det sosialt samvær og dans (for de som ikke hadde vondt i hoftene) som gjensto på programmet  i går kveld….  Men i dag er vi klare igjen til siste dag av FOKO-konferansen…

Siste dag av konferansen startet med et par musikalske innslag fra to innsatte i Berg fengsel. Flott start….

Seniorrådgiver Marie Fridhov fra Kriminalomsorgens sentrale forvaltning hadde dagens første foredrag som omhandlet tilbakeføringsgarantien og Stortingsmelding nr. 37 (2007-2008).

En innsatt i Berg fengsel forteller videre om tilbakeføringsgaranti, skole i fengsel og soning generelt. Etter 8 år i fengsel holder han nå på med en Mastergrad i kriminologi. Forteller om soning i fengsel med et kritisk blikk… Vanskeligheter med skolegang, høysikkerhetssoning, begrensninger og vanskeligheter med kommunikasjon ut, problemer med intern programvirksomhet med mer. Dagens høydepunkt uten tvil!

Gro Solbakken Månsson,  forteller om prosjektet “Fremtid for meg” som omhandler hvordan tilbakeføringsgarantien for noen innsatte i Drammen fengsel fungerer.

Etter en liten pause fortsatte Francios Elsafadi fra “New Page” med temaet: “Hvordag bygge selvtillit”. Han er også kjent som deltaker i årets Robinsonekspedisjon.

Konferansen avsluttet med en evaluering av konferansen. Årets FOKO-konferanse har hatt som vane å ha gode foredragsholdere, årets konferanse var intet unntak…. Med ny motivasjon og inspirasjon fra stort sett gode foredrag, og fra kolleger fra andre skoler, har årets seminar vært en suksess. Nå ser vi allerede fram til neste års FOKO-seminar….

Da er det kommet til dag 2 av FOKO-seminaret. Etter en god frokost startet dagen med en liten historie fra FabelAkt, som er en fortellergruppe fra Oslo.

Benny Christensen fra Statsfengslet Møgelkær i Danmark hadde dagens første foredrag som omhandlet “Veiledning og kompetanseavklaring”. Han presenterte et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom arbeidsdriften og skolen fra dansk kriminalomsorg. Mye sammenfallende med situasjonen i Norge. Bruker ansatte i arbeidsdriften som veiledere i yrkesopplæringen.

Deretter presenterte Roald Sjursæther, driftssjef i Bergen fengsel, et perspektiv på arbeidsdriften i norske fengsler og samarbeid med skolen. Fokuserte blant annet på at verksbetjentutdanningen må ha større fokus på pedagogikk, for at opplæring skal få et større fokus i arbeidsdriften.

Psykolog Per Isdal fortsatte med et foredrag om voldens psykologi. Han var en av grunnleggerne av ATV-programmet (Alternativ Til Vold) som er mye benyttet i kriminalomsorgen. Engasjerende og sterkt foredrag….

Etter lunsj fortsatte konferansen med Elin Barth fra Grønland Voksenopplæringssenter hvor hun fortalte om prosjektet “Theatre activities for inmates and exoffenders” Dette er GVO’s bidrag til “The Will to Dream” som er et Grundtvig samarbeidsprosjekt mellom flere land.

Konferanseeltakerne fordelte seg deretter på 8 forskjellige parallellsesjoner med et bredt innhold.

Etter et nytt kulturelt innslag fra FabelAkt  presenterte Anita Wilson - chair of the EPEA, organisasjonens arbeid og planer fremover.

Til slutt i dag var det årsmåte i FOKO.

Ny leder er Hilde Larsen – Færder vgs, avd. Berg fengsel. Ny kasserer er Per Sneeggen – Brundalen vgs, avd. Trondheim fengsel. Ny informasjonsansvarlig er Knut Bjørn Strømmen – Færder vgs, avd. Sem fengsel. Ny 1. vara er Marit Gran – GVO. Ny 2. vara er Vigdis Fosheim – Hjalmar Johansen vgs, avd. Sluseprosjektet. Sekretær Torfinn Langelid ble gjenvalgt for 2 år. Tore Kjemperud – nestleder var ikke på valg og fortsetter ett år til.

Nå er det “festmiddag”…. Kanskje kommer det en rapport derfra i morgen tidlig……

Nå er det årlige FOKO-seminaret i gang på Brunstad Conference Center i Vestfold. Etter en sen lunsj ble konferansen åpnet av FOKO-leder Vigdis Fosheim og av EPEA-chair Anita Wilson.

Professor Ingvard Wilhelmsen fra UIB innledet konferansen med fordraget “Konge i eget liv”. Han tok utgangspunkt i pasienter fra Hypokonder-klinikken i Bergen der pasientenes “katastrofetanker” preget livene deres. Dette presenterte Ingvard på en humoristisk og meget tankevekkende og flott måte. Tror mange kjente seg igjen….

Etter foredraget var alle ca. 220 deltakerne inndelt i FOKO’s tradisjonsrike “vorspielgrupper” på tvers av skoler og fengsler, før middagen ble servert.

Etter en god middag var det samling i baren der “mixing” og “mingling” mellom deltakerne stod i fokus… Mange interessante diskusjonen og erfaringsutvekslinger…

11. – 13. november er det klart for årets FOKO-konferanse  på Brunstad Conference Center i Vestfold. FOKO, Forum for opplæring innenfor kriminalomsorgen, er en ideell organisasjon som vil fremme opplæring innenfor kriminalomsorgen.  

Skolen vår stiller med 11 deltakere. Dette seminaret er høyt  prioritert fra skolen vår hvert år, og alle som underviser i Ringerike fengsel får muligheten til å delta. Der møtes lærere fra alle fengslene i Norge, og mange erfaringer deles og utveksles.

Seminaret vil selvfølgelig bli fyldig referert i bloggen. Programmet ser lovende og interessant ut…. Følg med!

Midi Madagasikara à l’honneur à l’Essva Antsirabe

Tous les chemins mènent à Rome. Il arrive aussi que le chemin de Rome mène au journalisme. C’est le cas pour Fanja Angeline Rasoamarivo, religieuse par vocation et journaliste par passion. Etudiante en Communication et Journalisme à l’université privée Essva, sis à Antsirabe, elle a choisi d’analyser la Une de « Midi Madagasikara » comme thème de son mémoire de fin d’études. En fait, à travers la critique de la Une, l’impétrante a décortiqué le quotidien dans son ensemble dont la Une en est la vitrine.
« Midi Madagascar reste le journal le plus lu et le plus connu à Madagascar. Il peut affronter la concurrence grâce à la maturité de ses informations et sa régularité. Il n’est pas seulement un journal qui se limite à raconter un événement, mais surtout un journal de réflexion et de documentation ». C’est ce que Fanja Angeline Rasoamarivo a dit en substance dans le corps de son mémoire dont la qualité, mais aussi la pertinence du sujet, lui a valu la mention Très Bien.

L’université privée Essva dispose de six filières – Communication et journalisme, Gestion et Management, Hotellerie et restauration, Ecotourisme, Electromécanique, Sciences et techniques de l’éducation – et un centre de lapidairerie. Les inscriptions sont déjà en cours pour les nouveaux bacheliers, notamment pour ceux qui veulent entrer dans la filière électromécanique industrielle que seule l’université privée Essva propose. Les études durent trois ans au bout desquels les étudiants se voient délivrer un diplôme équivalent officiellement à la licence professionnelle dans la fonction publique.
La cérémonie de sortie de la 7ème promotion, baptisée « Mandresy », se tiendra le 23 octobre. Ce sera également une occasion pour lancer officiellement les festivités de commémoration du Xème anniversaire de l’Essva.

Ever since I had my camera, I’ve always taken pictures using the “Automatic mode” or hide behind the “Auto adjustment” setting letting the gear do all the job to have quite respectable good quality pictures. But later, thanks to a  long-time-awaited photography workshop scheduled on Jul.20 but finally happened at the begining of this month, I know all the advantages of the “Manual mode”.

It was only that Saturday that I knew we do not say a photography is “good” or “bad” but rather “strong” or “weak”. Tibora Bea, who led the workshop, started by showing us some photos taken by famous photographers and explained us why they are strong. She also explained us the “composition” theory. The rule of the thirds. Where to place your subject to make the viewer’s eyes move. And then we passed by the lines and patterns that can compose a photo. All of these are quite hard to assimilate she says but the more you look at photographies the better you understand how to read them, how photographers see the beauty of something and what message they want to pass.

Taking pictures these days has become so easy and quick. You can have them publish online in ten minutes and it will take the same time for the whole world to see it. “As long as you ask yourself should I publish or not? You can consider that it is photo journalism” Tibora said. As example and practice she asked us to come upon basic rules before publishing any photos on our blogs. These rules could be applied within Foko or why not the Malagasy blogosphere.

The last part or the workshop was the practice. “It’s Christmas time, we’re like kids discovering new toys!” said pinguin_mada. Tibora, helped us go through the basic settings of our cameras. “It’s only now that I discovered I have this option” added Hery Zo. As a newbie in photography, knowing all these options, when and how to use them is not obvious. Well, it’s hard to sum it up in a post but what I can say is that this workshop helped us a lot and now we the thing we need to do is practice more and more. This is an interview that features The Cyber Observer and myself (Pakysse was also present but he spent his time taking photos and recording videos) with Christina Corbett (BBC – IRIN) towards the end of March this year. With a backoff I realize I was a little bit mistaken saying that the crisis didn’t bring about new blogs’ birth. In fact, it did but I just noticed it way too late.

The last Barcamp for Malagasy bloggers by “Foko” in Antananarivo last weekend was the first one I attended as a blogger. The workshop gave general outlines about blogging technologies and about ethics in citizen journalism, crowdsourcing information and the influence of online social-networking services as a communications media or alternative media. It was also an opportunity for us to hear a foreign journalist from “le Monde” and French Global Voice talking about censorship and laws that rule different countries in terms of code of information. What has raised during the dialogue is the issue of censorship towards uncontrolled media drifts and irresponsibilities from accredited journalists as from bloggers. Concerning this matter, the situation in Iran reflects a perfect study case in micro-blogging, twitter technology and the unprecedent measures taken by the Iranian government in cyberwarfare counterattack of misinformation. In fact, Madagascar is now a cool place and the focus has changed to Iran, Honduras and Nigeria.

During the hot period of the Madagascan crisis 3 months ago, many Thai people had their eyes riveted to the red island — sharing maybe the same struggle for a better government and against any forms of tyranny they previously exprerienced (2008). What is happening in Iran now follows the same scope and should grasp the attention of all Malagasy people because it deals with an election issue just like in 2002 and a tyranical leader (just like in 2009) threatening the world with its nuclear bomb ambition (which is actually an Israeli myth). The Iranian crisis has reached its sixth week now counting almost 40 dead from Hossein Mousavi suppoters.

“When was the last time Americans “tweeted” on behalf of the Afghan, Iraqi, and Pakistani victims of American bombs ? “

  That’s the question thoughtful observers ask when they witness the surfeit drum beats about Iranian’s last election issue. Thanks to twitter, Israeli agents from Mossad have succeeded to marshal a movement against the actual government with the support of American “NED” the National Endowment for Democracy agency. With no clear evidence of stolen ballots, Moussavi, backed by the US service plan to overthrow the clerical regime of Teheran. It is clear then that social networking and micro blogging is again misused from its primal purpose and serves as another tool of controlling the mass opinion on the behalf of Western powers. Indeed, Uncle Sam can not act directly anymore after Bush’s overt policy on Iraq; they would use instead internet technology to achieve their goal. Think twice before tweeting !

Back in 2007, ABC News reported that President George W. Bush had signed a secret “Presidential finding” authorizing the CIA to mount covert “black” operations to destabilize the Iranian government. Once again the second edition of the Barcamp Madagascar was a rich mix of personal experiences, knowledge, tools and ideas from people that are not automaticaly in the same world.

If during the first Barcamp I could not stay long, this time I was able to enjoy the whole thing from A to Z. All in all, new media, crowd sourcing information, social network and online censorship were the main topics disussed and presented during this barcamp 2009.

It will take me a long post to cover all of them which were really interesting so I invite you to read the related posts written by other friend bloggers (see list below).

When I met the bloggers in Antananarivo for the first time I more or less knew what they’d been through during the crisis. Last Saturday, it was with a careful attention that I listened to the FBC from Fianarantsoa and Antsirabe. I was eager to know if they lived the same situation as we did here. It appeared that it was the case. Jaona (from Antsirabe) got his digital cam snatched and crashed on the ground. The same thing nearly happened to Gaëtan and his friends when they wanted to take pictures of the burnt Magro premises. They could get theirselves out of there before things worsened.

Thus, a certain expectation was felt upon Claire Ulrich’s presentation about online censorship and usual ways to dissuade and threat bloggers.

“I won’t tell you something new since you guys have lived the most common ways to censor bloggers” she told us. She took examples of some countries like Iran and China where the freedom of press is almost inexistant and bloggers had to pick up where journalists fail to transmit news. There are different types (or levels) of censorship she said. It can go from simple verbal threats to sophisticated softwares the government impose to ISPs. The question is, now that we know it, what are the means and tools to counter it. Claire said that bloggers should be united first. The more you are the (merrier lol) the better it is. Then she added that computer scientist should not be neglected because most of the solutions come from them.

Undoubtly, blogs and social media played an important part in the crisis in Madagascar in spreading Information. That’s what T.Andriamirado showed. This tools is a double edged dagger though. That’s why he urged all twitterers and those who want to share a piece of information in general to think twice before spreading it.

Ideas and suggestions were boiling like in a “kôkôty gasy” during and after the barcamp and for me the next step is trying to find ways to put them into concrete frames so that they won’t just stay “talks”.

A workshop on new media was held at the American Press Center on April 24 during the “Friday Talk” session. It was co-organized by the APC and Telomiova.

The attendees were given a “suitable dozen page tutorial for journalists” to help them have a good start point and clear guide lines for a first time use of this social networking tool (what are followers, how to follow someone, who to follow as a journalist …). And God knows how useful it was.

The goal of the project was to show Malagasy journalists how to take advantages of the use of new media in their job. After a brief debate on “why use new media?”, because we had to convince some of journalists, Hery Zo led the workshop helped by the Telomiova crew and Foko guys. We started with the micro-blogging on Twitter.

Ando was among the journalists who were interested in the workshop. And here is a video of her telling what she thinks of it.

As she says, it needs more practice. It’s hard to assimilate a lot of information (that are new to you) in 2 hours. Anyway, there are those who could create their own twitter account. After explaining them the basis of Twitter and its basic use we told them that it is also possible to tweet from a mobile phone. A very useful feature for a reporter on site. We tried to activate their mobiles but the setup was costly. The international SMSs are 5 times more expensive than the local ones and this is still a big issue in developping countries like Madagascar.

We continued with “How to setup alerts on google news” and “How to use RSS feeds on mobile phones” but I’ll talk about it in my next post.

PS : I finally made it. Two 40 seconde videos. What I have not figured out till now is why when I use Firefox (or Google Chrome) to upload my vids on Youtube it always fails. But once I use IE … it works!! Ariniaina, try to upload with Internet Explorer to see if it works.

Well guys, I don’t have (anymore) much to say since there are already detailed and nice reports – in three languages please – made by the other bloggers out there. When I knew it and decided to attend, I didn’t really know what to expect. When bloggers meet what they are likely to talk about and do? The only thing I was sure of is that it would turn around virtual things lol. I was wrong!

It was not the first time I met all of them. I’ve already been a couple of times on the ground with Avylavitra and met Jentilisa during the eBit 12. The same for saveoursmile. DotMg, I saw him at the BarCamp but we couldn’t have a talk. And we didn’t either last Saturday lol. In fact, we left the Phi Quest Café at about 6:30pm when other bloggers arrived. I could meet the “Godfather” :p Barijaona 2 or 3 months ago but I wish I could know more about his experience as a senior blogger. The day before, I attended a new media workshop with Tattum, Elsifaka and Tony but I didn’t know who they were exactly. I just knew they were from Telomiova. I would say that these are the first-time-I-see faces for me there. They are from Telomiova if I’m not wrong.

The most interesting part for me is no doubt when they shared their experiences during the on going political crisis. The difficulties bloggers have to face when they are on site. And me, I was like a kid doing what I think I’m best at … listening, laughing and snapping some shots

I want to see miracles, see the World change – Switchfoot

Why blogging about Africa? I needed almost half a day to find my answer to this question, an answer that became obvious for me. I just want a “change” (sounds like Obama thing, doesn’t it lol), a “better change” for this continent. I started my post with a line that I picked up from Switchfoot’s song and I know the word “miracle” sounds a bit too much. It’s not a shame to dare to dream of a better situation, better incomes, yes better life for African people but you just need to wake up and make them come true. And like my mom says it’s never to late (until it’s too late :p)

So why exactly blogging about Africa?, yeah I’m coming to that point. I discovered blogging a while ago when joining Foko and now I know we can achieve incredible things with them. In Madagascar we have a saying that goes like “herikerika maha tondra-drano” in a simple translation the bottom line is that “we can start with little things and end up with greater ones” and also the most important “united we can achieve something huge”.

When I blog about my country, I guess I blog about Africa because whether you like it or not we’ll always be related to this continent. This is what I can call a “digital patriotism” :p since this is one way for me to show the world who we are.

I don’t know why I felt no excitement when thinking of this year’s edition of e-bit may be somewhere I already knew (before going to the show) what it was going to be up to. I was there during the Youth Day (Friday Oct.17) over most of the afternoon and noticed the hustle inside our national “Palais des Sports”. I whish it was 10 years ago, the time I felt the same way like these kids (almost) running between the stands with their friends and classmates wowed by every single gadget.
In fact, I wondered what was it that I was looking for during this event given that I’d probably know most of what would be there. I mean, the e-bit has become edition after edition a kind of “Grande Braderie” where the goal is to sell the maximum of products but not to transmit knowledge or to discuss more important issues. This is where the BarCamp is much more interesting (a personal view point).
So I was just strolling in there amidst the youngsters with my homie moma – who could buy a memory stick at a lower price than usual – in a hope of finding a MacBook Air. Since I heard that Apple would have its own stand I had that idea stuck in mind. Unfortunately, they didn’t have it, I had to content myself with a sweet explanation of one of the Mac hostesses. I quickly get bored, we made a 360° tour of the show in less than 45 minutes. Thus we decided to go back to the other side of the “Palais des Sports” where the activities (or should I say interactivity) were more … present.

Watching is good but using and getting involved is better. Foko Madagascar – with some other associations – made the difference through the workshops, presentations and demonstrations they gave. Despite the problems they had planning and organizing things – in fact I didn’t know it until I read a post from far far away on it – they did a great job.
The big room was divided into different areas where different sorts of activities were held. The FBC had no rest the whole afternoon, we had not enough connected PCs to match the kids who wanted to create their blogs or email accounts. While TheFinalAndLastKill and Co were taking care of the students and their blogs, saveoursmile attempted a risky presentation on web 2.0 lol. I say risky because the audience were very young, too young that I bet sometimes he must have wondered “what the hell am I going to say” lol. Pakysse, for his part, didn’t let the mic go far if he was not yelling (on the mic ahh) :p at the new comers to show them the room’s map he was answering questions during the presentations.
ESSVA students in communication from Antsirabe and member of FBC, did a good job too. With a well geared team – digital cameras, camcorders … – they had been interviewing, shooting and recording all along the event.

As Andry and I walked up the stairs to the room where the barcamp was held, we had noticed a note on a white board on “what you should do at a barcamp”. Before reaching the main door I could already hear someone taking the floor, I stretched my ears and got them wide open, then I heard something like web2.0 (and puppy linux ). Oh my God, I got to see that presentation I said to myself. We entered the room but there were no more seats, it was full. No time to idle, Jogany asked me to record an excerpt of each presentation. I put on my FOKO t-shirt :p and tried to spot enough room for me and my bag close to the speaker.

A lot of people attended the barcamp and most of them were … bloggers. This was an opportunity for me to see some of them that I only knew by pictures through blogs like avylavitra, DotMg or Jentilisa – who talked about the Global Voices Online and released a book containing what he’s been writing as a blogger since 2006. Crazy!! It must be a 200 page book! I also met old friends that I started to miss, right Fy (eboons.net) , Ndria from e-saina (when will we play bball again man, you seem to have put on weights ahhhh nahazo takolaka lol) and how can I forget mister VoIP himself, Iantra (connectic), I’m so sorry bro I couldn’t attend your speech. Ah, yeah I was about to forget, the foko blogger’s from Tamatave, Mahajanga and Antsirabe were there as well, a part from the ones that I already met during the foko workshops I could recognize among them Diana and Patrick.
I couldn’t talked much though, I was most of the time behind my camera juggling with recording and shooting pictures (as what all the FBC’s members were doing when they were not live blogging), trying to have the best of my 256mb memory card. Ain’t easy.

I paid much more attention to Haja’s presentation on “Why Madagascar hasn’t got yet its IXP?” Ok, so this guy is a real geek. He’s the administrator of the .mg domaine, a member of AMUL and also works for Orchid Systems. He raised a serous issue that should be put an eye on. To simplify and not to enter into details, an IXP is a connection point of two or several ISPs. This way, if two people living in Madagascar sending each other emails won’t be obliged to use satellite anymore. That means, the connection won’t go out side Madagascar if it is between local users. Not only can this idea help us save hundreds of millions of dollars but also improves the speed rate of the local connection. His part took more than the granted 5 minutes – yeah the attendance wanted more and was totally  curious about it. Pakysse was obliged to intervene and suggested to discuss it in the afternoon.
The 2 hours passed so fast, the time I realized my memory card was full it was almost 1:30. I had to leave L. I loaded all the photos and videos I had on foko’s laptops.

My impressions
The mood and atmosphere struck me the most. It was warm, relaxed and fun. Just like between old friends and family members – nothing really formal. Plus you are tagged with your name once you enter the room so that anybody can know you. That eased exchanges a lot, raised undiscussed issues that may concern everybody and helps new ideas and concepts to see the light.
